Through his art, Javi uses his creativity as a medium for storytelling, exploring visual definitions of beauty. He loves the challenge in creating pieces of art that transcend time and experimenting with different historical eras and art genres. He paints mainly in oils on hard surfaces, such as board or canvas board, so he can use techniques like scoring, scratching or rubbing to create

different textural effects. In his quest to deconstruct beauty he uses seductive, alluring classical or iconic cultural figures and repurposes them to create contemporary works.

As a child I collected things from the beach, e.g. shells, feathers and anything shiny or unusual and created pictures and scrapbooks. This was my beginnings as a mixed media artist. Mixed media describes the use of many different arts crafts and techniques to create interesting unique two- and threedimensional works of art. The materials

I use include found items, metal, fibre, buttons, things from nature, paints, inks, resin, clay, feathers, to name but a few. I make handmade greetings cards, art journalling, canvas pictures, altered bottles, boxes, bookmarks, wall hangings and so much more as the inspiration takes me.

I have been painting and drawing for about five years since I retired. I did a little painting as a teenager and attended an art foundation course then but nothing after that until I retired. Sometimes I wish I had made a career in art. I paint in oils, mostly landscapes and portraits. I also use watercolours, painting nudes, mostly using only one or sometimes two colours. I like to

emphasis colour in my work. I have been copying some grand masters’ paintings –always hoping some of their skill will rub off on me!

I came to ceramics only after I retired, and now see my work as a constantly evolving experiment with clay. Using hand-building techniques of coiling and pinching, I create sculptural pots for the garden, as well as smaller indoor pieces. My work is influenced by the natural world and by the worn and patinated

surfaces of archaeological finds. I sometimes carve cracks and fissures into my pots, reflecting both the erosion worked by time and the elements, and the damage that mankind has inflicted on the earth.

I am truly passionate about glass. Its colour, vibrancy and as the basis of my creative work. The material I most love to use is dichroic glass. Quite rare to use it unfused, it’s expensive but so worth it. All the glass I use is opaque and either has an iridescent or opalescent sheen which is effective and attractive in a mosaic. With this glass I make mosaics on tile or slate for the garden, on silver plate and

metal for jewellery and on wood for the home. The work I especially enjoy and value is to make crosses for churches and private homes.

With a childhood on a farm and a career in archaeology, I have an interest and affinity with the landscape, which is reflected in my work. I have had to drastically downsize since the 10 ‘ paintings of my art degree, now enjoying the discipline of miniature oil paintings! I also work in woven tapestry with earth themes.

I am a printmaking artist working in etching, linocut, screen printing and collagraph as well as some fabric printing. I love printmaking and exploring different methods including etching without using acid and have tried photogravure etching as well as using dry-point and collagraph methods and using recycled materials such as tetra Pac. I am inspired by nature around me and places I have visited, but my work is more about finding different

ways of printing. It is the medium and the method of printing that drives my creativity by experimenting and producing different mark making in a printing plate to achieve a successful design. Good drawing skills and use of colour are also very important in my work.

I am a creator, ceramicist, crafter and nature lover. I started my business in 2021 making handmade and handpainted ‘Halliespheres’ from my dining room table in West Street. I knew instantly that I had created a product that invites vitality and purpose, inspiring people to align with the seasons and connect with nature, and in turn create their own beautiful, long lasting and flourishing flower arrangements. Creating tile art for nearly 10 years, Using a mixture of wall tiles, old crockery & mirrors to bring them to life. Mostly creating winged hearts (crockery angels) which are finished with black grout that I think really makes them pop and gives them a bit of a tattoo look. Most recently introducing small red glass beads to give the appearance that they

I create bold abstract art with an emphasis on experimentation and spontaneity. Paintings evolve organically through layers of gestural brushstrokes and expressive mark-making where I search to balance impulsive and more deliberate visual language using a variety of materials including: fluid acrylic paint, spray paint, marker pens, pencil &

charcoal on canvas or paper. I love how abstract art produces strong, immediate and visceral responses in both the creator and the audience and I hope that viewers of my work enjoy the engaging compositions as I have experienced joy in creating them.

A thread which runs through a lot of my current work can be summarised as being about the colour of memory. For me the essence of a place is defined by its light rather than pictorial detail. To represent my feeling for a place, through colour, is my intention.

Miranda draws inspiration for her paintings from the physical experience of nature and the elements. The connection between the materiality of the environment and painting symbolises what my work is about. I have researched for many years the properties of colour, pigment and the synthesis of paint from found earth. I incorporate these materials into my paintings which imbue the land they describe. I am always trying to find a twist on what initially appears ordinary as daily life evolves. A glimpse of light or a particular set of circumstances may suggest an idea which will develop in my mind to formulate a painting. Sometimes I work Plein air or from sketchbooks, initial ideas from my own images or even studio exercises can develop into a finished work. I try to engage with the viewer

Sir John Betjeman’s Banana Blush

Malmesbury Abbey

7pm Saturday 18 November

In 1974 John Betjeman, then Poet Laureate, became an unlikely pop star, recording his verse to music by Jim Parker for the album Banana Blush. It became a cult classic, regularly played on radio by John Peel, and is treasured by many musicians including Jarvis Cocker and Suggs (Madness).
