Henry J. Durand, Ed. D. Henry J. Durand is the Senior Associate Vice Provost of Academic Affairs, State University of New York at Buffalo Dr. Durand is also a Clinical Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Education and serves as the Executive Director of the Cora P. Maloney College (CPMC) enrolling and/or serving about 3,500 of the UB undergraduate student population. CPMC consists of four divisions encompassing 11 major programs consolidating the missions of 1) access and opportunity, 2) orientation, and first year student services, 3) academic support and retention to graduation, 4) academic enrichment and undergraduate research, 5) community involvement and community service, and 6) preparation, and motivation for pursuing graduate study.

Professor Durand is a member of the Graduate Faculty of the University at Buffalo, a Senator on the SUNY wide Faculty Senate and member of the UB Faculty Senate Executive Committee. His course offerings include the quantitative research core courses Statistical Methods for Educational Research, Survey Research Methods and Statistical Analysis Using SPSS. His discipline is Educational Sociology and he also teaches classes in American Pluralism, Education and Social Class, African American Students In Higher Education, Race and Ethnic Relations and related subjects.

Dr. Durand has received many recognition awards, including the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Professional Excellence, the Milton Plesur Award for excellence in undergraduate teaching, and the Grassroots’ Cora P. Maloney award for service to community. He is a cited alumnus of Denison University, and has been listed by Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Black America, Who's Who in Training and Development and Who’s Who in American Martial Arts.

He is the current President of the Tri-State Consortium of Opportunity Programs in Higher Education, the professional organization for all college level Opportunity Program personnel in the states of New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. He is a founding member of Opportunity Programs United, the joint advocacy organization for NYS Opportunity Programs, and served for over ten years as the president of the SUNY Council of Educational Opportunity Program Directors.

Dr. Durand holds a B.A. from Denison University, M.Ed. from Xavier University of Cincinnati, the Doctorate from the University of Cincinnati, and is a graduate of both the Harvard Management Development Institute and the American Management Association Executive Programs.

Cora P. Maloney College The Cora P. Maloney College (CPMC), formerly known as the Center for Academic Development Services (CADS), is focused on enhancing the University at Buffalo experience. Chartered in 1976, the CPMC focuses on a range of educational issues including; academic achievement and enhancement, social justice and cross cultural awareness. CPMC fosters the interconnectivity between UB students and their living and learning community, providing for a transformative undergraduate experience that supports growth in Buffalo and Western New York.

The CPMC program includes: Community focused college credit courses serving 150-200 students per semester, and a credit bearing community service internship program and course (PSIP) serving 20-30 students per semester.

The Daniel Acker Scholars Program which involves recruitment, admissions, advisement and support for 300 highly selective underrepresented students.

UB’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (UB-STEM) programs including the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation Program (LSAMP), UB’s Bridge to the Doctorate, and the National Science Foundation (NSF) Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM).

Two US Department of Education Federal TRiO grants: Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program and Student Support Services (SSS) Program.

Two NYS Grants: SUNY Empire State Diversity Honors Scholarship (which funds the Acker Scholarship) and the Collegiate Science Technology Entry Program (CSTEP).

Two special admissions and counseling programs: Access to College Excellence (ACE) Program and the Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) which are engaged in the recruitment, admission, and support of approximately 1,200 students.

Academic support services that include a tutoring center employing more than 100 tutors helping over 3,000 students, a pre-freshman summer bridge program for 200 students, and a peer mentoring program available to all first year CPMC students.

Academic Enhancement programs that provide more than 100 undergraduates with research training, faculty supervised research, summer research and internship opportunities, and training to pursue graduate study.

Access to College Excellence Program (ACE) The (ACE) Access to College Excellence Program is an individualized admissions program designed to assist students during their first two years of study with making the transition from high school to college. Students are notified of their selection for the ACE program during the admissions process. The ACE program is also an integral part of the University at Buffalo’s effort to promote access and enhance diversity.

Daniel Acker Scholars Program The UB Daniel Acker Scholars Program is an individualized learning community serving academically talented students who are traditionally underrepresented in higher education. This unique program offers support services and activities that help students with exceptional academic potential maximize their college experience from enrollment to graduation.

UB Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics Programs (UB STEM) UB-STEM Programs seek to increase the number of underrepresented students pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) these programs provide services to improve the academic performance, retention, graduation and graduate school acceptance rates of participating students. Programs include: The State University of New York Louis Stokes for Minority Participation (SUNY LSAMP) seeks to diversify the STEM workforce by significantly increasing the numbers of students successfully completing high quality degree programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. LSAMP offers research internships under the direction of a UB Faculty member during the academic year, as well as an 8-week intensive Summer Research Program.

The UB Bridge to the Doctorate (UBBD) seeks to increase the number of underrepresented students pursuing doctoral level studies and ultimately earning a PhD, in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

The S-STEM Scholars Program offers support services and scholarships to STEM students who are pursuing a STEM career path and/or admission to a STEM graduate program.

Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) The Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program provides resources and activities that support talented underrepresented students pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and the licensed professions.

To address the shortage of underrepresented students in STEM fields and the licensed professions, CSTEP provides the following high impact activities critical to student success and retention: • Summer Research Program – Intensive 8-week program, structured to

The Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) provides an avenue for admission and means of support for talented students who have not reached their full academic potential due to barriers in their educational, economic, or personal background. EOP combines academic and student success support with access, supplemental financial assistance and instruction to make higher education possible.

In order to fulfill the intent of the Educational Opportunity Program, the following academic student success, retention and graduation programs and activities have been established: • • • • • • • • •

CPMC Summer Bridge Program The Cora P. Maloney College (CPMC) Summer Bridge Program is a four-week residential program designed to help students preparing for the freshman year of study at UB understand and adjust to the university's environment and culture.

Attendance is mandatory for all students accepted into the Educational Opportunity Program. It is a highly structured and intensive program centered around academic course offerings that strengthen the students reading, writing, mathematics, and communication skills.

CPMC Summer Bridge students become familiar with the campus, the community and a wide range of academic and non-academic resources. They are introduced to the performance expectations, workload and behavioral strategies that are important aspects of college life and academic success.

The Academic Resource Center (ARC) The Academic Resource Center (ARC) provides a welcoming and academic environment at UB. We are available to assist all CPMC students to reach their full potential, by providing high-quality support to students. We incorporate learning strategies, thus creating life-long learners. In order to achieve our mission the ARC provides: • A broad range of tutoring services • A convenient location with computer lab and study area • A scholarly atmosphere and supportive staff The ARC offers: • Individualized Peer Tutoring: Individualized peer tutoring allows the stu

dent to meet one-on-one with a qualified and recommended tutor of

that particular subject area.

Student Support Services Program (SSS) Student Support Services Program provides individualized, holistic support to lower-income and first generation students who demonstrate academic need so they earn their bachelor’s degree at UB. Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program (McNair) The UB McNair Scholars Program mission is to assist low-income, first generation college students and students underrepresented in graduate education, reach their goals of attaining doctoral degrees.

The program works with sophomores, juniors and seniors who have a strong academic record and stated interest in obtaining a Ph.D. We help students prepare for successful application to and completion of a graduate degree program through academic and other support services such as: • Opportunities for research or other scholarly activities designed to pro

vide participants with effective preparation for doctoral study; • Summer internships; • Seminars and other educational activities designed to prepare partici

EOP and CSTEP Student Heading to Medical School Congratulations to Ms. Shante’ White on being accepted to the University at Buffalo School of Medicine this Fall 2014! Shante who is an EOP and CSTEP graduate has always been exceptional. She was the EOP Summer Bridge Program Highest Honor Scholar and immediately accepted in to the UB School of Nursing. Ms. White’s was also awarded the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Academic Excellence as well as graduating with high academic honors in Nursing.

UB Acker and McNair Scholar Uses Her Winter Abroad Experience in Mexico as an Opportunity to Fund Educational Scholarships for Child Street Vendors Senior UB Acker Scholar and McNair Student, Christine TjahjadiLopez, participated in UB’s winter 2014 Study Abroad program in Mexico during her break from classes. What she thought would be a relaxing journey from the chilly Western New York weather turned out to be a life changing opportunity for her to help fund scholarships that would send several children, who were working on the streets of Mexico, to a local school for the entire academic year. “One of the trips we took to an organization that works with street children touched my heart, and from there, I sought financial support from friends back home and acquaintances at school.”

Christine was able to fully fund two scholarships to support child street vendors. These children of street vendors worked full days alongside their parents, selling various items to tourists.

Christine worked with the “El Sistema Municipal para el Desarrollo Integral de la Familia de Cuernavaca” organization to help fund these children to return to school and gain an education. This government run organization was created by the First Lady to assist with the development of family integration in Mexico. Upon her return to campus this spring Christine hopes to help encourage her fellow UB student peers to surpass expectations by thinking creatively when studying abroad.

Christine Tjahjadi-Lopez has been awarded funding to travel to Latin America to teach photography and leadership to children, returning the University at Buffalo in the spring semester to study International Trade as a Arthur A. Schomburg Fellow.

McNair Student Scholars Progress to PhDs The McNair Scholars Program is proud to congratulate 18 students who this past May celebrated the completion of their bachelorette degree and the next steps they will be taking towards their doctorate degrees. During their time as undergraduate students each of the 18 scholars completed a graduate level, faculty mentored, intensive research experience that culminated in the presentation of their research at a national conference. This conference, currently cohosted by the University at Buffalo McNair Program, SUNY University Faculty Senate, and the SUNY Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; is a national research conference that brings hundreds of excellent students from across the United States to the Buffalo/ Niagara area. Currently, there are 16 undergraduate McNair scholars preparing their research for presentation at this year’s conference to be held in July 2014. The McNair Staff, Mentors, and McNair Family would like to congratulate all of the Scholars on their outstanding accomplishments. We are proud of the hard work and dedication and we cannot wait to see what life has in store for them as they transition into the next steps of their life.

CSTEP Students Recieve Awards

Collegiate Science & Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) Highlights CSTEP students are in the news. Below you will read about Christ Ange receiving a scholarship and Ledum Nordee an alumnus of CSTEP. In additional, two CSTEP students Michael Singletary and Melissa Pierre-Louis talk about their amazing internship opportunities.

Scholar Profile: UBAA Willie R. Evans Legacy Scholarship The Legacy Scholarship program was established by the University at Buffalo Alumni Association (UBAA) through its board of directors to assist currently enrolled students who are children or grandchildren of UB alumni. The Legacy Scholarship, which was instituted in 2008, was renamed the Willie R. Evans Legacy Scholarship in 2009. When we think of the word “legacy”, we think of an inheritance – something valuable handed down; the concept of connectedness – as in a family; and heritage – the traditions, pride, and spirit. Willie R. Evans, a 1960 UB graduate, embodies all of those principles. As a student, he was part of the UB family; in particular, Willie played UB football and was a member of the 1958 UB Bulls football team that turned down an invitation to appear in the Tangerine Bowl because Evans and another black teammate would not be allowed to play alongside white players. As an alumnus, he has maintained his involvement with the university for decades. Willie has been involved with the UBAA since 1972. He is a lifetime member of the association, past president of the UBAA Board of Directors, and can be found at most University events still lending his support.

This Fall, Christ Ange, or “Angel” to those who know her, was awarded the Legacy Scholarship for $3,000. She also participated in the 2013 CSTEP Summer Research Program where she worked as an intern with Dr. Rajendram Rajnarayanan of UB’s Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology. Angel has been accepted into UB’s School of Pharmacy and will be continuing her studies in the Fall of 2014. Congratulations Angel!

I had the opportunity to get involved for the first time with a focused group of students and faculty who shared a common interest in promoting excellence in the STEM fields and gave students hands-on innovative science projects to work on.

Lastly, I like to thank Dr. Kwang Oh, who served as my research faculty advisor and continues to mentor me through my career in engineering.

CSTEP Research Intern Spotlights Summer Mentor: Dr. Jessica Zirnheld, Assistant Professor Internship Placement: Energy Systems Institute Michael Singletary, Electrical Engineering.

My research topic is “Phase and Ground Distance Relay”. This research focuses on protective relays, devices used to monitor and protect power systems, cutting the power of a specific area in the system in an effort to isolate the issue preventing any major damage. This Summer, I was introduced to the SEL-321 Phase and Ground Distance Relay, a device lent to the lab from the company Megger.

Our research assists in the development of simulation algorithms used in categorizing faults, ensuring that whatever situation arises the relay will perform at a high degree of efficiency. Currently, I am tasked with researching new modes of implementation for relay protection. The CSTEP Summer Research Program isn’t just a program that provides research opportunities; it gave me access to alumni, scholarships, fellowships, friendships and networking. I learned that with being given opportunities, and taking advantage of them, you should also give back.

These experiences inspired and motivated me to do the same for others.

Future Plans: To obtain a master’s degree in the field of electrical engineering. My dream job would be to work at a company that’s innovative, unpredictable, and efficient. Excitement is what I’m looking for in a career which is partly why I joined the military. My military career goal would be to become an officer in the U.S. Army completing airborne, air assault, and ranger school. Also, I would also love to continue engaging in research that searches for a new form of power with the ability to sustain the global economy and ultimately replace fossil fuel completely.

Summer Mentor: Dr. Larry Hawk, Associate Professor Internship Placement: Department of Pscyhology Melissa Pierre-Louis, Psychology.

My research this past summer was “A Literature Review of the Effect of Incentives on Working Memory (WM) among Children with ADHD.” Affecting approximately 5% of children worldwide, ADHD is characterized by symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity, demonstrated in multiple settings. Future investigations should examine additional schedules and levels of reinforcements, which may normalize WM for children with ADHD. In addition, this review revealed that studies have only been conducted in school-aged children. It is critical to examine the effect of incentives on daily demands on WM that arise in the classroom and at home. I am still an intern in Dr. Hawk’s lab, helping recruit participants for a dissertation project. In addition, I have expanded the project I completed over the summer by adding new, relevant articles. I will also be looking at how methylphenidate (MPH) improves WM. This experience has been amazing because not only was it educational and informative, but it was uplifting and made me feel like the sky is the limit. The environment and workshops through the CSTEP Summer Research Program prepared and trained me to further any professional career. The internship has opened my mind to research and helped me to consider multiple career options. Most importantly, it was inspiring being around a great number of successful people.

Overall, I wouldn’t change it for anything.

Future Plans: I would like to attend medical school and become an Adolescent Psychiatrist.

Ilyas Abdulle (SSS) earned UB’s Hutchinson Central Technical High School Access Scholarship of $2500 annually for four years, intended to support graduates of Hutch-Tech at UB. Shukree Abdul-Rashed (SSS, McNair, and CSTEP) gained admission to the Undergraduate Research Program sponsored by the National Science Foundation at the University of Cincinnati this summer 2014.

Jennifer Abreu (SSS and CSTEP) earned the Xerox Scholarship in May 2014, awarded by the Society for Hispanic Professional Engineers.

Janelle Allen (EOP) earned the Percy Sutton Award for outstanding scholarship and noteworthy service for EOP at the UB Pillars of Leadership Award Ceremony.

Jennifer Asante (SSS) earned the Abe Halbreich Scholarship from UB, intended to support students in the health sciences who demonstrate achievement and financial need.

Penpa Bhuti (EOP) earned the Percy Sutton Award for outstanding scholarship and noteworthy service for EOP at the UB Pillars of Leadership Award Ceremony.

John Brito (SSS, McNair, and CSTEP) gained admission to Columbia University’s masters program in biotechnology.

Lisa Burgess (EOP, SSS) student parent mother of two boys 10 and 17 years of age received the Greater Buffalo.

Juweria Dahir (SSS) earned the highly-competitive Prentice Family Foundation’s Western New York (WNY) Prosperity Scholarship, intended for entrepreneurial and civic-minded students at UB. Fatima Elabass (EOP) earned the William R. Greiner Leadership Award at the UB Pillars of Leadership Award Ceremony.

Paul Glenn (McNair, ACKER, C-STEP and LSAMP) has been accepted to start the fall 2014 semester as doctoral student studying biophysics at the University of California, Berkeley, fully funded by the Berkeley Fellowship for Graduate Study.

Andrea Gonzalez (SSS) earned a scholarship from the Hispanic Women’s League of Buffalo in fall 2013.

Yufeng (Fanny) He (EOP) earned the Percy Sutton Award for outstanding scholarship and noteworthy service for EOP at the UB Pillars of Leadership Award Ceremony.

Shuting He (SSS) earned a $1500 award from UB’s School of Management’s Stewart Study Abroad Scholarship. She will study in China and Japan in summer of 2014.

Jalonda Hill (SSS) earned two scholarships to fund her semester abroad in Ghana during the spring 2014.

Lucy Lin (SSS) earned a $3500 scholarship from UB’s School of Management to study abroad in Singapore during the Wintersession 2013. This achievement follows the two scholarships Lucy earned to study abroad in London during the spring 2013.

Darrell Kelly (SSS and CSTEP) gained admission to the PsyD program at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, starting this fall 2014.

Samantha Kulu (SSS, McNair, and CSTEP) gained admission to UB’s accelerated bachelor’s of nursing program and earned a scholarship from UB to support her studies.

Celia Mah (SSS) has gained admission to UB’s Department of Communicative Disorders and Science master’s program in order to become a medical speech language pathologist, starting this fall 2014.

Manuel Marte (SSS and CSTEP) has gained admission to the SUNY-New Paltz Department of Communicative Disorders and Science master’s program in order to become a medical speech language pathologist, starting in fall 2014.

Frank Misiejuk (EOP) was accepted into the master’s program in Occupational Therapy (OT) at UB. Hyelim (Esther) Park (SSS) gained admission to University of California—San Francisco advanced degree program to become a Family Nurse Practitioner, starting fall 2014.

Marc Pierre (EOP) earned the Student Affairs Leadership Award.

Jesse Polanco (SSS and CSTEP) has gained admission to UB’s Doctorate in Physical Therapy program, starting this fall 2014.

Mr. Casimiro D. Rodriguez, Sr (EOP Alumni) was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award given to alumni who have made outstanding contributions and distinguished accomplishments in community affairs, exceptional accomplishments in his field, and the advancement of EOP. Shageenth Sandrakumar (SSS) gained admission to the Undergraduate Research Program sponsored by the Center for Mathematics at Notre Dame and the National Science Foundation this summer 2014.

Perla Santo (EOP) earned the Dougherty-Witten Award is given each year to an EOP student who has faced and overcome obstacles in their life, and demonstrates a strong commitment to pursuing and completing their bachelor’s degree.

Amy Watson (EOP) earned the Arthur O. Eve Award; Pillars of Leadership Award and was accepted in to UB’s Masters of Social Work graduate program.

Jianghao Zhu (SSS) earned a $2000 Garman scholarship funded through a generous gift from Richard and Patricia Garman from UB’s Department of Civil Engineering, intended to recognize outstanding student achievement.

Educational Opportunity Program Advocacy Day in Albany!

Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Advocacy Day was Wednesday, February 12, 2014. There were seven students from UB who traveled by bus along with Denise Hare an EOP Counselor, to Albany. The students were Lin Peng Gao, Dominique Case, Isaiah Davis, Ying San Leung, Emily Li, Dakwame Stewart, and Travis West. Along with the University at Buffalo students, there were also students from Fredonia, Geneseo, and the Buffalo Center.

Assemblyman John Ceretto (R,C,I-Lewiston) welcomed three students from the University of Buffalo to the Capitol to discuss the importance of education as it relates to the success of New York State’s next generation. The students, Travis West, Emily Li and Dakwame Stewart, talked with Ceretto about their college experience, college costs and student aid, how they can best prepare to enter the workforce, and the resources that higher education needs to deliver the best education possible.

“The New York we are creating now is the one that the next generation of New Yorkers will live in long after my generation is gone. Given the struggles that young adults are facing with debt and the lack of job opportunities, it was great to hear their perspective on what direction our state needs to take. I thank them for coming and sharing their thoughts,” said Ceretto.

A New Touch Screen for the ARC The Academic Resource Center (ARC) provides academic support for all Cora P. Maloney students. The ARC provides individual tutoring, group tutoring, and academic coaching. To enhance the tutoring, the ARC has just installed a new state of the art touch screen monitor. This large screen monitor will assist tutors working with small groups by being able to display online charts, textbook pages, instructor’s slides and more, while allowing the tutors and students to interact with the materials. This is a proven learning tool, especially for our most in-demand subjects like organic chemistry, biology, and physics—but helpful to students in all classes and majors!

It Still Takes a Village: The 2013 CPMC/EOP Summer Program

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

The Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) at UB welcomed 210 of its newest EOP students to its 3.5week residential summer program. This pre-frosh, academic summer program prepares students to be successful at UB. Activities kicked off on Tuesday, July 2, 2013, with the Staff Training Day, where nine academic counselors, 12 faculty, 25 tutors, 14 residential counselors, and 11 administrative staff participated in presentations and workshops, professional development, and strategic planning activities. Students arrived Saturday, July 6, and classes commenced on Monday, July 8.

Summer Program instruction features an interdisciplinary approach with collaboration among English, World Civilization, and College Success faculty, designed to help students acquire critical thinking and research skills, write research papers, and learn to properly cite reference materials.

Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe, was required reading for this year’s entering class of EOP students, and the text helped to facilitate critical examination of many issues across the curriculum, including modernity and societal customs. In addition to World Civilization, Writing, and College Success, which contained study skills, time management, and library skills components, students completed mini-courses in Psychology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology in lecture, lab, and recitation-style settings.

CPMC/EOP Summer Program helps students make the transition from high school to UB by giving them a slice of university life, with the same rigors and expectations students will encounter when they begin the fall semester. Students begin to understand college culture and the stressors of college life, so they can hit the ground running in the fall.

Classes met weekdays from 8:30 a.m. through 5 p.m. and attendance was mandatory for all students accepted into EOP. The CPMC/EOP Summer Program is a highly structured and intensive program that also strengthened students’ reading, writing, mathematics, and communication skills. In addition to the academic courses, the summer program also arranged a full schedule of evening and weekend recreational and social activities.

An awards ceremony concluded the 2013 Summer Program on Thursday, July 25. Summer program faculty presented 56 awards to students in the categories of “Highest Achievement” and “Best Effort” for English, Psychology, Biology, Chemistry, World Civilization, College Success, Calculus, Algebra and Trigonometry, and Intermediate Algebra.

The CPMC/EOP Summer Program is a huge undertaking. The primary professional staff involved in the planning and operation of the CPMC Summer Program included Dr. Henry J.
