An Evening with Pam Ayres

Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio

Pam Ayres brings her latest show to Cadogan Hall on National Poetry Day, Thursday 3 October, to mark the publication of her new book of poetry, You Made Me Late Again!, copies of which she will be signing after the show.

ZURICH INTERNATIONAL ORCHESTRA SERIES 2013-14

Pam Ayres’ work is funny, and approachable. It sounds simple, as though dashed off, but this is deceptive. Her hair-trigger timing, her eye for the detail of everyday life and for the absurdity therein, makes for an art that hides art. Pam has sold millions of books, CDs, and DVDs over the years, and she is still a regular on TV and Radio, on programmes such as Just A Minute, Ayres On The Air, QI, Countdown, and The One Show.

Programme: Tchaikovsky Souvenir de Florence Rachmaninov Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini Shostakovich Symphony No. 10 Vladimir Fedoseyev conductor Andrei Korobeinikov piano Awarding the orchestra the name of this great Russian composer was in recognition of its role in promoting much of the music written by Tchaikovsky and for nearly 40 years the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra has been headed by Vladimir Fedoseyev.

‘Pam Ayres has an incredible way with an audience. She was really one of the funniest comics I’ve seen, and it’s because of her rapport. She just treats the audience like a huge roomful of friends.’ (Yorkshire Press)

Tonight we hear Souvenir de Florence, which, despite being composed during a visit to Florence, contains distinctly Russian and folklike melodies and rhythms, and Shostakovich’s dramatic Symphony No. 10, the first significant orchestral work to emerge in the Soviet Union after Stalin’s demise. The award-winning young Russian pianist Andrei Korobeinikov plays Rachmaninov’s captivating Paganini Rhapsody.

English Chamber Orchestra

Programme: Berlioz Roman Carnival Overture Beethoven Violin Concerto Brahms Symphony No. 1

Programme: Mozart Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Alissa Firsova Serenade for Strings (world premiere) Tchaikovsky Variations on a Rococo Theme David Matthews Symphony No. 4

Robert Davidovici violin Grzegorz Nowak conductor Three outstanding works by three great masters, beginning with the glittering festivities of a Roman carnival, as portrayed by Berlioz in music full of romance and joie de vivre. Beethoven’s Violin Concerto is a masterpiece of the genre, bridging the gap between Classical and Romantic concerto styles with elegance and wit. Brahms was so overwhelmed by Beethoven’s genius that he was slow to write works that might be compared with those of his idol. Though it took Brahms nearly 15 years to compose his First Symphony, the work was certainly worth the wait. The Symphony exudes great nobility and mastery of form, with a powerful opening movement, lyrical Andante, graceful third movement and stirring finale.

Alissa Firsova conductor/piano Michael Petrov cello Throughout the ECO’s history it has commissioned and premiered numerous works for orchestra, often championing young talent; today the orchestra is delighted to be working with the gifted musician, composer and conductor Alissa Firsova conducting the world premiere of her Serenade for Strings, commissioned especially for this evening’s performance. It also revisits one of the ECO’s past commissions, the Fourth Symphony of David Matthews, celebrating his 70th birthday this year. Alissa is soloist in Mozart’s sublime Concerto No. 23 and is joined by the outstanding young cellist Michael Petrov for Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme.

Academy of St Martin in the Fields with Joshua Bell

Gala Concert A grand Gala concert celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Centre and in memory of the great Vishnevskaya herself, featuring a repertoire of much loved Russian and Western classics.

Programme: Bach Violin Concerto in A minor Beethoven Septet Beethoven Symphony No. 7

Established in 2002 by the legendary Russian singer, the Opera Centre provides professional training for talented young singers from Russia and abroad. After graduation many of their students have gone on to become soloists of the leading opera houses of Russia and Europe. To date the centre has staged ten opera productions and numerous concerts as well as being represented at many opera festivals over the past eleven years since it opened and completing successful tours of Belgium, Hungary, Germany, France, Italy, Mexico, and South Africa, to name a few.

Celebrated violinist Joshua Bell directs the orchestra from the leader’s chair, opening the concert with a performance of Bach’s Violin Concerto in A minor.

Joshua Bell violin/director

Scored for clarinet, horn, bassoon and strings, the Beethoven Septet that follows is surprisingly symphonic in character. A light-hearted work in the spirit of the 18th century serenade, the work complements the vivacity that pervades the Seventh Symphony that follows, but contrasts with its unique, chamber-orientated instrumentation. ‘Splendidly alert performances, responding to every nuance in the music.’ (BBC Music Magazine) 6.30pm: Free pre-concert talk given by one of the orchestra players.

Boma Diri

A father and son remember it differently Hosted by Nick Hewer of The Apprentice. For one night only Jack Whitehall and his father Michael invite you to an evening of outrageous tale-telling as they reveal the rich and plentiful Whitehall family lore archives, bringing vividly to life their forthcoming book, Him & Me. Hosted by family friend, Nick Hewer, and accompanied by personal photographs, as well as illustrations by Jack, the show will be a hugely entertaining portrait of the special (and certainly unique) relationship between a father and a son. Him & Me is published by Michael Joseph, Penguin Books on 10 October 2013.

Boma Diri is one of the most exciting talents expected to do big things in the UK Gospel scene in 2013. She was the Season 2 Winner of the No. 1 Gospel Television Talent show in Europe, Time2Shine and had the audience on their feet at the final of the show in London in 2012. Boma has been in the studio working hard on her debut album Leap of Faith with acclaimed producer Nicky Brown. Following her international tour previewing some of the songs at the Barbados Gospel Festival, Boma Diri launches Leap of Faith at Cadogan Hall.

The authors will be available to sign copies of their book after the event.

After LCO’s summer break their 13/14 opening season concert will remind us all of what it is to work, play and reflect. Britten’s Prelude and Fugue for 18 strings starts in a powerfully reflective mood and takes us quickly into a racy fun fugue. Merry really is the word for Richard Strauss’s rarely performed ‘Merry Workshop’, a typically fragrant, tuneful and sometimes beautifully indulgent piece – the ideal back to work antidote. Hearing LCO’s very fine wind section play this will surely be a season highlight. Christopher Warren-Green’s gripping Beethoven interpretation will come to the fore in Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony and offer the perfect opportunity to reflect on those summer visits to the country – with the occasional storm...

Pianist Mario Galeani performs Beethoven’s majestic Third Piano Concerto, with its dramatic first movement, a deeply beautiful Largo, and the famous Rondo. Show of Hands with Miranda Sykes plus support

Programme: Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto Tchaikovsky Swan Lake (excerpts, arr. Barry Wordsworth) Yoon-Hee Kim violin Barry Wordsworth conductor An essential concert for all lovers of Tchaikovsky’s music, this programme celebrates the many facets of the composer’s style, from elegant poignancy and unfettered emotion to dancing and good humour. The composer’s Serenade for Strings was inspired by Mozart, a composer much admired by Tchaikovsky, who said of the serenade that it was written ‘…from inner compulsion. This is a piece from the heart’.

Steve Knightley and Phil Beer are widely acknowledged as the finest acoustic roots duo in England. Knightley, who writes most of their inspired material and Beer, a dazzling multi-instrumentalist, have built up a huge following which has seen them sell out the Royal Albert Hall three times, headline major festivals from Glastonbury to WOMAD and playing all over the world, from Europe to America, Australia and India. Voted ‘Best Live Act’ by the public at the 2004 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, the jury is still out on just what kind of music they play. A genre defying mix of rock, roots, blues, country and trad, and often influenced by the music of other countries, it is played out on an array of instruments from slide guitar to fiddle, mandolin to South American cuatro.

The Violin Concerto was not much appreciated during Tchaikovsky’s lifetime, but its vibrant and heartfelt melodies have ensured that the work remains hugely popular with audiences today.

At the 2010 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Steve and Phil received a prestigious double accolade when they were named ‘Best Duo’ and also clinched the ‘Best Original Song’ award for Steve’s punchy Arrogance Ignorance and Greed.

Louis and The Duke in London An 80th anniversary celebration

Chelsea Opera Group Chorus and Orchestra Kirstin Sharpin soprano Cameron Burns conductor Euryanthe was first heard in Vienna in 1823, following the great success of Der Freischütz two years before. Weber’s music is more adventurous than in the earlier work, with no spoken dialogue. Together the two operas had a major influence on the developing German romanticism of Marschner, Schumann, Liszt and Wagner; his orchestration was much admired by Berlioz.

Keith Nichols and his Blue Devils Enrico Tomasso’s Allstars Russell Davies presenter and variety acts including Thomas ‘Spats’ Langham, Nick Lumley, Julia Biel, John Sutton, Ciana Skeete, Tim Batt, Richard Pite’s Syncopated Paraphernalia In 1932 Louis Armstrong created a sensation when he appeared at the London Palladium and a year later Duke Ellington’s Famous Orchestra became the talk of the town when they topped the bill at the same venue.

6pm: Pre-concert talk for ticket holders.

The wonderful music performed by the two most important jazz men in history is recreated by Keith Nichols and his Blue Devils and Enrico Tomasso’s Allstars featuring members of the Bryan Ferry Orchestra and The Pasadena Roof Orchestra. Also on the bill will be a recreation of the finest variety acts of 1933 including Nick Lumley as Max Miller.

Concert performance sung in German with English surtitles.

Part of the EFG London Jazz Festival produced by Serious and the Jazz Repertory Company.

TICKETS £35, £30, £25, £18

TICKETS £32, £26, £22, £18

While the overture is familiar in the concert hall, the complete work is rarely heard today: its clumsy plot (of knights, ghosts, revenge and redemption) has distracted attention from its musical qualities, which show Weber at the summit of his achievement.

Programme: J. Rosemary Furniss viola Finghin Collins piano Christopher Warren-Green conductor LCO’s Concertmaster and Artistic Director Rosemary Furniss proves that the combination of viola, Bruch and romance is more than a match for the popular violin concerto. Pianist Finghin Collins is the wonderful soloist for Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21, which is one of those pieces that makes life worth living.

In the second half the Czech National performs its authentic interpretation of Dvorˇák’s most famous symphony, which he wrote in New York while feeling homesick for his beloved country. Since then the New World Symphony has become one of the classical repertoire’s most iconic works.

Sandwiched between the ‘greats’ of the Seventh and Ninth Symphonies, Beethoven’s Eighth, had it been written by anyone else, would still be considered a masterpiece. If you do not have LCO’s wonderful live recording (or even if you do!) then come and hear it come alive.

Ravel Le tombeau de Couperin Elgar Cello Concerto Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5

Programme: Chabrier L’Étoile

Jamie Walton cello Christoph Koenig conductor Composed during World War One, Ravel dedicated each movement of his Le tombeau de Couperin to a fallen friend. Yet the influence of the Baroque composer, Couperin, results in music of bittersweet understatement. Also written in response to the First World War, Elgar’s Cello Concerto is one of his greatest works, the cello evoking the human voice as it unfolds aching, deeply moving melodies. The Concerto is performed by Jamie Walton, hailed by the Washington Post as ‘a major cello talent… Though relatively young, he plays with the dignity and reserve of a well-seasoned artist’. Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony offers a profound insight into the composer’s tumultuous emotional history, travelling a longed-for journey from unfulfilled desires to joyful acceptance.

Sir John Eliot Gardiner conducts Beethoven Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique Beethoven Symphony No. 1 Beethoven Symphony No. 2 Beethoven Symphony No. 8 Sir John Eliot Gardiner conductor For its only London concert this autumn, the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique continues its exploration of Beethoven’s symphonic repertoire. ‘It was revolutionary, it was romantic, it was wonderful’, said The Times of a recent performance of Beethoven’s 4th and 7th. Following a tour of the monumental Missa Solemnis last year, the orchestra returns with the more light-hearted 1st, 2nd and 8th symphonies. The Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique was founded by Sir John Eliot Gardiner in 1989. Performing on period instruments, it brings stylistic fidelity and intensity of expression to the music of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Since its inception it won plaudits internationally, notably for its interpretation of the works of Beethoven which it performed extensively and recorded for Deutsche Grammophon in the 1990s.
