Martyn Brabbins Conductor Jan Mrácˇek Violin A dreamy opening flute tune begins tonight’s concert with Debussy’s luscious symphonic poem as Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, meanwhile, bridges the gap between elegance and wit. This summer concert concludes with Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, a work bursting full of imposing melodies and stirring rhythms.

Tan Dun Conductor Jing Zhao Cello Smetana's sparkling score, his much-loved portrayal of Bohemia's mighty river, opens tonight's concert. Next maestro Tan Dun conducts Crouching Tiger Concerto – a work inspired from his Oscar-winning score. Plus special guests

Part of Choral at Cadogan 2016-17 Britten Hymn to St. Cecilia Gabriel Jackson Ave Regina caelorum Berio Cries of London Lars Johan Werle Orpheus Lars Johan Werle Canzone 126 di Francesco Petrarca Britten Sacred and Profane Nederlands Kamerkoor Peter Dijkstra conductor Chief Conductor Peter Dijkstra has compiled a masterly programme with a timeless theme: the wandering soul, drifting between heaven and earth. Do we listen to God’s command, or do we give in to earthly temptations? Benjamin Britten must have struggled with this question. It can be heard in one of his most beautiful choral works, Sacred and Profane, written to medieval texts. The lure of the temporary sounds comical but heartbreaking in Berio’s Cries of London, about street vendors in the 16th century. The works of Lars Johan Werle complete the programme.

West country folk singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Seth Lakeman’s eighth studio album Ballads of the Broken Few was released in September 2016 with the single Meet Me in the Twilight playlisted soon after at BBC Radio 2. The album, which was produced by Ethan Johns, is a stunning combination of his dynamic song-writing and playing and the sublime harmony vocals of emerging young female trio Wildwood Kin. The BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winner’s previous albums include Mercury Prize nominated Kitty Jay (2005), the gold-selling Freedom Fields (2006) which featured the hit singles Lady of the Sea and The White Hare, Poor Man’s Heaven (2009), Hearts & Minds (2010), Tales from the Barrel House (2011) and Word of Mouth (2014). With Ballads of the Broken Few Seth demonstrates yet again that, far from being complacent, he is constantly exploring new and bold musical paths. He will be playing tracks from the new album and favourites from his back catalogue.

A ‘classic’ choral programme with a timeless touch.

Mendelssohn Elijah

Leif Ove Andsnes director/piano Since its formation in 1977 the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra has established itself as one of the foremost chamber orchestras on the international classical music scene. Through integrating experienced musicians with talented young instrumentalists, the orchestra continuously develops its unique style. The orchestra’s international tours to Europe, Asia and the USA have received outstanding reviews at many of the world’s prestigious concert halls and festivals.

Sinfonia Britannica Elizabeth Atherton soprano Rebecca Afonwy-Jones mezzo-soprano Ben Johnson tenor Gavan Ring bass Thomas Blunt conductor Elijah was composed for the Birmingham Festival of 1846, just a year before Mendelssohn’s early death. It is a work of tremendous dramatic scope, chronicling episodes in the life of the Old Testament prophet Elijah – including the contest of the gods, the miracle of raising the dead, the bringing of rain to a parched Israel and his ascension on a fiery chariot into heaven.

The New York Times has called Leif Ove Andsnes ‘a pianist of magisterial elegance, power, and insight’. With his commanding technique and searching interpretations, the celebrated Norwegian pianist has won acclaim worldwide.

Mendelssohn was much influenced by the oratorios of Handel and the great choral works of J.S. Bach. In combining these elements with 19th-century Romanticism and drama, he created in Elijah a choral masterpiece that has enduring appeal to singers and audiences alike.

Saint-Saëns Samson et Dalila

Berlioz Roman Carnival Overture Dvořák Cello Concerto Shostakovich Symphony No. 5

Matthew Scott-Rogers conductor Aron Cawley Samson Claudia Huckle Dalila With an abundance of melody, skilled choral writing and polished orchestration, it is hard to equal Samson et Dalila. Originally conceived as an oratorio, it is ideally suited to concert performance. The plot is based on the well-known biblical story in the Book of Judges. It took a long while for it to be produced as an opera because of restrictions on staging biblical subjects. But by the time the composer died it had been performed more than 500 times. Saint-Saëns regarded this grand opera as his masterpiece. Concert performance in French with English surtitles.

Yong Jun Lee cello Dominic Grier conductor The young musicians of the Purcell School Symphony Orchestra perform under the baton of Dominic Grier. The programme includes Shostakovich’s best-known and majestic Fifth Symphony, Dvořák’s famous Cello Concerto with teenage soloist Yong Jun Lee, and the Roman Carnival Overture, orchestrated in Berlioz’s brightest colours. The Purcell School is the UK’s oldest specialist music school; alumni include Oliver Knussen CBE, Catrin Finch and BBC Young Musician of the Year winners, Nicholas Daniel, Lara Melda and Martin James Bartlett.

Vaughan Williams Sancta Civitas Puccini Messa di Gloria Adam Tunnicliffe tenor Matthew Hargreaves bass-baritone Wimbledon Youth Choir Trebles from Shrewsbury House School Thames Festival Orchestra John Bate conductor A concert of deep contrasts in mood: Vaughan Williams’ hauntingly evocative cantata, with its great visionary scope and marvellously complex choral forces, and the youthful Puccini’s exuberant and tuneful Mass setting. Vaughan Williams’ haunting cantata, written in response to the First World War, describes the end of time and the descent of the holy city from Heaven. It is a visionary work of great power, rarely performed due to the complex choral input, including a distant children’s choir. Messa di Gloria is an exciting insight into the early potential shown by Puccini as a student. The work is a confident tour-de-force, brimming with colour, vitality and good tunes. Frano was born in 1954 so he starts the concert with hits from that decade, continuing with hits from each following decade up to the present time. It will be a true musical journey through time.

An exciting mix of classical repertoire presented by Dan Newell, the Tippett Quartet and friends. Pre-concert activities from 10.45am based on the Billy’s Band books by Dan Newell. At Last: The Etta James Story Starring Vika Bull and the Essential R&B Band.

Sibelius Karelia Suite Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 1 Tchaikovsky Swan Lake – excerpts Barry Wordsworth conductor Natasha Paremski piano Tonight’s concert opens with Sibelius’ delightful Karelia Suite which, with its boldly scored music and theatrical build ups, is somewhat far removed from its original incarnation as a set of musical tableaux depicting significant moments in Finnish history. Next Natasha Paremski takes the lead in Rachmaninov’s youthful First Piano Concerto which is brimming with an audacious energy that pulses throughout the piece.

Telling the story of soul legend Etta James’ turbulent life, At Last: The Etta James Story features some of her most beloved songs including Tell Mama, Something’s Got A Hold On Me, Sugar on the Floor, the heartrending I’d Rather Go Blind, her iconic signature song At Last, and more. Vika puts her heart and soul into this unforgettable show and is joined on stage by some of Australia’s finest and funkiest musicians. The show explores Etta James’ life from her frantic recording and touring schedule, to her six Grammy Awards and a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame, ever-growing addiction problems and her influence on artists old and new. With respect, this is her story.

Excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s magnificent ballet Swan Lake conclude the concert with its instantly recognisable themes, featuring the ever-popular Mazurka, Neapolitan Dance, Spanish Dance and Black Swan.

In a Strange Land

“How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?” This well-known verse from Psalm 137, a hymn of captivity and longing for homeland and religious freedom, gives this programme its title and its theme. In a Strange Land explores man’s search for heaven and earth in the Old and the New World in the turbulence of the 16th and 17th centuries. There is music of religious conflict and of discovery from England, France, Holland, Spain – and from Mexico and Bolivia, the world of the Aztecs and Incas. The programme includes William Byrd’s exquisite Mass for Four Voices alongside gems by Gesualdo, Lobo, Tallis and Victoria, the lilting syncopation of Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla’s Missa Ego flos campi, and rhythmically-arresting music from the Latin American Baroque, full of evocative, indigenous imagery.

Copland uses the famous Shaker hymn Simple Gifts in Appalachian Spring, his wartime ballet which heralded a new simplicity and directness of style. Simple Gifts also forms the starting point for Paul Edlin’s new work, performed by the young participants of the Music Junction scheme. The soloists in Shostakovich’s outlandishly ebullient First Piano Concerto are also strikingly youthful: the hugely gifted teenagers Daniel Karitonov and Lucienne Renaudin-Vary.

The main work is a substantial 6-voice mass setting by Morales, based on a chanson by Josquin. Music of this beauty and complexity from the early Spanish Renaissance is not so often performed, and may come as an eye-opener to those more familiar with High Renaissance practice. Ballaké Sissoko & Vincent Ségal with Koki Nakano

Schubert Symphony No. 8 (Unfinished) Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 4 Brahms Symphony No. 4 Mario Venzago conductor Danny Driver piano The incomplete state of Schubert’s Eighth Symphony has captured the romantic imagination like no other piece of music. With its universally loved themes, it has been the subject of many attempts to complete it; none of them completely successful. In complete contrast follows Beethoven’s glorious Piano Concerto No. 4, which abolished formal traditions with a simple statement for solo piano. Closing the concert is Brahms’ fourth and final Symphony. Its finale, a radiant passacaglia, uses every instrument of the orchestra to drive towards the roaring and joyful conclusion.

Ballaké Sissoko is one of Mali’s greatest exponents of the kora, joining forces in an unlikely pairing with Vincent Ségal, a French cellist best-known for his work in trip-hop and resulting in an elegant and soulful music. Now, these two sonic voyagers have returned with Musique de Nuit – an album even more spellbinding than its predecessor. Perhaps the most magical thing about the new album is that after years of touring, and performing together on hundreds of stages around the world, the album has the feeling of eavesdropping on a late-night jam session – it was recorded in two sessions in the Malian capital of Bamako, one at night on Ballaké’s rooftop, and the other during the day in the famed Bogolan studio. ‘It’s the work of two musicians from very different backgrounds who seem to understand each other almost intuitively’ (★★★★ The Guardian). Opening for Ballaké and Vincent is young Japanese pianist/composer, Koki Nakano. Presented by Serious.

ACCESSIBILITY Free companion / Assistance scheme Cadogan Hall has a range of services to assist disabled customers including provision for wheelchair users in the stalls. Customers in receipt of disability-related state benefits, and members of our Access Scheme, may be entitled to concessionary ticket prices for some events or a free companion seat. Please contact the Box Office for a form to register for Cadogan Hall’s Access Scheme. Wheelchair users If you use a wheelchair and wish to transfer to a seat, we regret we may not be able to provide a member of staff to help you physically. However, we will arrange for your wheelchair to be taken away and stored. A lift is located to the right once inside the Box Office reception allowing access to a lowered Box Office counter. Foyer areas are on the same level as the Box Office and the foyer bar (Oakley Room) is accessed via a wide access lift. Seats within the stalls are accessed via a wide lift as are adapted toilet facilities. The Gallery Please note the lift provides access to all levels except the gallery seating areas. Gallery seating can only be accessed via the main stairwell. When travelling to and from the gallery seating areas please allow sufficient time in order to be seated at an appropriate time. Customers with hearing requirements The auditorium is fitted with an infra-red amplification system. This is not the same as a Loop System so switching your hearing aid to ‘T’ is not sufficient. Please contact a member of staff on arrival to be given an amplification aid. Customers with sight impairment Guide dogs are welcome to access the hall and auditorium but please do let us know prior to arriving at the hall so we may make any special arrangements if necessary. We produce CD versions of this brochure. To request a free copy please call the Box Office and ask to be added to our regular lists. ‘Touch / Familiarisation’ tours can be arranged and we have unisex accessible toilets on all levels except the Gallery.
