AUTUMN SEASON AT CADOGAN HALL Autumn at Cadogan Hall always has a jazz focus, with EFG London Jazz Festival 2016 to look forward to in November. As a key venue for this prestigious festival Cadogan Hall hosts nine concerts between 12 November and 20 November and new for this year will be free live jazz in our Culford Room from 2.30-4.30pm. Come along pre-concert or join us to enjoy the music and atmosphere of the jazz festival. More details can be found on pages 30-33. The autumn season is also a treat for opera fans – choose from lesser-known gems such as Hasse’s Demetrio performed by Opera Settecento or semi-staged performances of The Barber of Seville, Carmen and Borodin’s Prince Igor. A beautiful evening of music will be provided by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s Opera Gala on 15 September. If large scale choral works are more to your taste we also offer an interesting evening of Chinese choral music including Yellow River Cantata. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and City of London Choir join together for Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus and Haydn’s Heiligmesse. London Concert Choir returns with Handel’s Israel in Egypt, Goldsmiths Choral Union performs Haydn’s Nelson Mass and Mozart’s Requiem, not forgetting the opportunity to hear Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast with The London Chorus on 27 November. Our classical music programme remains second to none. In September we welcome Valery Gergiev’s Mariinsky Orchestra performing all of Prokofiev’s symphonies and violin concertos over three concerts. Other international orchestras joining us before the end of 2016 include Brussels Philharmonic, Spanish Symphony Orchestra, Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, Czech National Symphony Orchestra and Zurich Chamber Orchestra.

Krishnamurti silence was at the centre in life and listening and attention were crucial. Aditi Mangaldas a leader in Indian Classical dance opens the concert to celebrate J. Krishnamurti’s links with music and the arts. Nigel North, one of the world’s foremost lutenists will play Bach’s Suite BWV 995, and the concert ends with Maria João Pires playing Beethoven’s profound and last Piano Sonata, Op. 111.

The Glen Campbell Years Grammy-winning songwriter Jimmy Webb has topped the charts with hits across genres for the last five decades – pop, country and disco – with songs including MacArthur Park, Up, Up and Away, All I Know, Didn’t We, Highwayman and Worst That Could Happen, and artists ranging from Richard Harris to Frank Sinatra to Linda Ronstadt and Art Garfunkel. Ukrainian pianist Natacha Kudritskaya makes a rare UK appearance in a programme featuring the world’s most famous piano concerto and its most iconic symphony.

Internationally recognised as one of Russia’s most prestigious and versatile orchestras, the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra returns to Cadogan Hall with Vladimir Fedoseyev to perform an intense and uplifting programme of Russian masterpieces.

Conducted by acclaimed ENO Mackerras Fellow Toby Purser, the Orion Orchestra performs with characteristic passion and energy, drawing its members from the best of London’s music college students and graduates.

Pavel Kolesnikov, at the tender age of 27, has quickly become a critics’ favourite. Following his debut concert in 2014, the Telegraph gave his recital a rare five-star review and called it ‘one of the most memorable of such occasions London has witnessed in a while’. He joins the orchestra to perform Tchaikovsky’s deeply romantic and soulful Piano Concerto No. 1. The concert concludes with Tchaikovsky’s passionate final symphony, which he reportedly considered to be his best and most sincere work.

One of contemporary music’s most iconic singer/songwriters, Suzanne Vega, celebrates the remarkable life of another distinguished writer, Carson McCullers, when she releases a new studio album inspired by the novelist, entitled Lover, Beloved: Songs from an Evening with Carson McCullers in October 2016.

Lover, Beloved is a collection of ten songs from the musical Lover, Beloved: An Evening With Carson McCullers. In the play McCullers is shown at two historical moments that bookend her career as she movingly reflects on her life and work. The songs, which she co-wrote with long-time friend and theatrical collaborator Duncan Sheik, richly capture the essence of McCuller’s insightful words and forward-thinking philosophies on gender and love.

In typical Wagnerian style, the Tannhäuser Overture encapsulates the drama of this greatly admired opera with its quasi-Bach chorale opening and dazzling, tormenting middle. Composed at the mere age of 20, Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 harks back to the likes of Hummel and Mozart whilst including Chopin’s patriotic hallmark, as the finale inhabits the world of Polish folk music. The concert finishes with Beethoven’s sunny and joyous Fourth Symphony.

Andy Jordan Further artists to be announced See Through Sound brings together some of the UK’s most promising breakthrough acts – alongside a stellar headliner – for an evening of live music in support of the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB). This very special event will feature artists from a range of musical genres and to accompany the fantastic auditory experience audience members will be given ‘sim specs’ (glasses simulating sight-loss) to wear on the evening, providing insight into living with sight-loss and creating a unique atmosphere for concert-goers. ‘Just because a man lacks the use of his eyes doesn’t mean he lacks vision’ (Stevie Wonder)

Like each musician, every instrument in the orchestra has its own personality and stories to tell. Some are extrovert and excitable, rushing to share tales of action and adventure. Others are more laid back, preferring to keep you on the edge of your seat as they slowly let the tension build and build. Here the spotlight is shone on a selection of them as we explore concertos, delving into some juicy musical conversations between the soloist and the supporting orchestra! With 33 electrifying young players as your guides, you can also expect dramatic lighting effects and big screen projections that help to take you right inside the orchestra and the music being played. After the concert you can meet the musicians and try out some of their instruments in Cadogan Hall’s foyer. It features some very famous music by Tallis and Taverner, while showcasing a tour-de-force from the Eton Choirbook by Richard Davy alongside a beautiful set of Lamentations by the adopted English composer (and possible spy) Alfonso Ferrabosco. Taverner’s Missa Western Wind is really a set of (36) variations on a theme which is so catchy one never tires of singing it. The whole set is a tribute to Taverner’s astonishing powers of invention and rare in that there was no precedent in his time for basing a sacred composition on a secular theme.

A love of Shakespeare, whose 400th anniversary falls in 2016. Mendelssohn’s enthusiasm found voice with his overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, written when he was just 16. As a mature composer he returned to the play and added further numbers that recapture his youthful style. Similarly bucolic is Mendelssohn’s First Piano Concerto, which channels the spirit of Mozart. Walton’s music for Henry V perfectly complements Laurence Olivier’s 1944 film, but it was Christopher Palmer who developed an extended version that melds music and dialogue, bringing the drama fully alive. Jessica Cottis conductor Borodin based his Prince Igor on a 12thcentury Russian epic. The opera tells a story of heroism and treachery during Igor’s campaign against the invading Polovtsian tribes. Borodin worked on the opera on and off for 18 years and left it unfinished at his death in 1887. It was completed by RimskyKorsakov and Glazunov and given its first performance three years later. This is a rare opportunity to hear one of the greatest Russian operas whose beautiful music includes the much-loved Polovtsian Dances. Concert performance in English.

John Nelson conductor Yi-Jia Susanne Hou violin Berlioz’s concert overture is remarkable for its rhythmic verve and energy. Composed while holidaying in Nice, this exuberant seascape evokes the play of wind, sea and waves. From French beaches to the Orient, Chen Gang/He Zhanhao’s programmatic Violin Concerto encapsulates ancient China with its use of oriental sonorities and techniques. This beautiful work is played here by Yi-Jia Susanne Hou, who was praised by worldrenowned virtuoso Yehudi Menuhin as ‘absolutely phenomenal’. The lively showpiece Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso is followed by the perennial favourite, Dvořák’s New World Symphony.

A versatile polymath, holding a degree in French and a doctorate in biochemistry, Beth Barfield Brown was also a fine pianist, studying composition at Columbia University, New York. Formed in 1966, the band originally featured John Lees, Les Holroyd, Stuart ‘Wooly’ Wolstenholme and Mel Pritchard. Their eponymously titled debut album was released in 1970 on EMI. The band released three more albums with the label – Once Again, Barclay James Harvest and Other Short Stories and Baby James Harvest – before signing to Polydor in 1974. 1974’s Everyone is Everybody Else is seen as the band’s artistic high point. It was voted into Radio Caroline’s Top 100 albums of all time. John Peel invited the band to record a session for BBC Radio 1 at this time also. Further albums – Time Honoured Ghosts, Octoberon and Gone to Earth – took the band to even greater popularity.

The Bands of the Household Division present their winter concert, ‘Scarlet and Gold’.

The torchbearer of the Lucknow gharana will present a scintillating classical tabla solo. Accompaniment will be provided by Surjeet Singh on sarangi and Rekesh Chauhan on harmonium.

Taking the title from Lloyd Thomas’ wonderful march, it evokes the splendour and sparkle of the Guards’ uniforms and instruments which combined with the beautiful setting of Cadogan Hall, promises an evening of musical pomp and grandeur.

This will be followed by a performance of Kathak by Deepak Maharaj, son of the legendary Pandit Birju Maharaj and doyen of Kalka-Bindadin gharana of Lucknow. Accompaniment will be provided by Pranshu Chatur Lal on tabla and Ghulam Waris on harmonium and vocals. The evening will be compered by Divya Mathur who will bring an additional flavour of Lucknow with some classical Urdu poetry.

The Royal Orchestral Society, Britain’s oldest amateur orchestra founded in 1872, in collaboration with Ronald Corp’s London Chorus, performs Walton’s exciting and iconic setting of Belshazzar’s Feast. This is preceded by Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, played by Martin Roscoe, and Bernstein’s reworking of his music for the 1954 film On the Waterfront into a Symphonic Suite. Ravel’s Concerto was written for Paul Wittgenstein, an Austrian pianist whose right arm was amputated during the First World War, and who then commissioned several major pieces for the left hand.

We welcome back the Zurich Chamber Orchestra following its appearance in the 201314 series. This season the orchestra brings with it two extraordinarily talented soloists. It is joined by Alison Balsom, whose accolades include the 2013 Gramophone Artist of the Year and three-time winner at both the Classic BRITS and the Echo Klassik Awards. It is these achievements that have gained her an international reputation and her position as one of the world’s greatest trumpeters. She performs one of the most popular, and technically demanding, trumpet concertos. After the interval, the award-winning pianist Gabriela Montero performs Mozart’s sublime and melodic Piano Concerto No. 14 and joins Alison for Shostakovich’s Concerto for Piano and Trumpet.
