LETTER FROM THE FOUNDER Dear Fellow Arts Leaders, Welcome to 2020 - we have entered into a new decade. Have you noticed your energy shifting? I’m finding more and more that it is the state of my spirit -- not time -- that determines my efficiency and effectiveness. When I step into an optimal energetic state, both my capacity and time actually expand, and music and the arts play a pivotal role in that shift. With that in mind, we at Cadenza are really in the energy business; together with our presenting colleagues, we are curating, producing, and promoting artistic experiences that invigorate and energize our communities. This creative energy is my favorite part of our field: how lucky we all are to get to create together. This year, I’m especially proud to be at the helm of Cadenza Artists and I’ll tell you why. First, I am thrilled to announce the latest additions to Cadenza’s roster: we are proud to now represent Judy Collins in Judy Collins: The Wildflowers Tour (more on pg 26) as well as Salute to Vienna New Year’s Concert (pg 32). In addition, in 2019, Cadenza brought on incredible new artists including: Brooklyn chamber music ensemble, PROJECT Trio; critically acclaimed composer of The Black Clown, Michael Schachter; composer, musician, author, and Pandora Radio’s Musicologist, Nolan Gasser; and the multimedia symphonic project from artist and innovator Aaron Dworkin, The American Rhapsody. 2019 also brought incredible successes and new heights for many of the longtime artists on our roster; many experienced well deserved moments in the spotlight and blossoming tours, as well as a number of premieres, including the premiere of Canada’s Ballet Jörgen’s Anne of Green Gables – The Ballet™. The elite Canada ballet company was given exclusive rights to develop the ballet based on the beloved story, using the score from the original compositions of Anne of Green Gables – The Musical™. It’s a bright retelling of the famous redhead and her spirited upbringing on Prince Edward Island. At Cadenza, we have also had a lot of exciting growth as we unveiled a new department focused on arts marketing. We merged with Beauchamp Artist Services, broadening our Marketing department by offering digital services to artists as well as to arts organizations. Beth Beauchamp has long pioneered new approaches to support both artists and arts organizations, including analysis on media and marketing assets, developing social media audiences, mailing lists, and more. Our marketing department also initiated a concierge program this year; through Cadenza’s Concierge Services, our team builds and deploys targeted campaigns and market research to enhance artist booking potential. Please enjoy this issue of our winter magazine! With warm wishes, Julia Torgovitskaya Rapoport CEO & Co-Founder, Cadenza Artists President & Co-Founder, iCadenza

MIWA MATREYEK Animation Performance Artist Cadenza Artist Miwa Matreyek is an animator, director, designer and performer whose work blurs the line between real and unreal. Miwa’s live, staged performances showcase her interacting with her animations as a shadow silhouette, creating work at the cross-section of cinematic and theatrical, fantastical and tangible, illusionistic and physical. Much of Miwa’s work explores themes related to environmentalism, urban planning, global warming, and water conservation. Cadenza interviewed the artist to learn more!

Originally this work started while I was in grad school, from playing with a projector in an empty classroom with some friends. That grew into an interdisciplinary collaboration and each small discovery in technique, visuals, and physical interactions was something we could expand upon. Eventually, we turned that work into a number of short performances. Can you tell us more about your upcoming project, Infinitely Yours? My new project Infinitely Yours is about the climate crisis and the complex world that humans have made for themselves.

Your work is very beautiful and dreamlike but also emotionally charged, using visual narratives to move the audience. How has your work developed over time?

The work is based on my process of taking in and cataloging the barrage of news articles we see every day about the climate crisis, ecological collapse, and societal causes and effects of our current times. We have become increasingly aware that we are living in the Anthropocene, the geological epoch where all parts of the earth and its processes are affected by human activity — from remote arctic glaciers melting, unseasonal storms, microplastics in the environment (and in animal and human bodies), and plastic trash in the deepest trenches of the ocean. It’s paralyzing to think about, because it’s too big in scale and time, too complex, and it feels too difficult to even conceive of changing 7.7 billion people’s lifestyles in order to turn this disaster around. I am interested in exploring ways to make invisible systems visible, to connect the dots between cause and effect, the entagled things that

In many ways my solo work has stayed consistent over the 12 years of making work like this, in so far as the technical set up — projectors, screen, performer — have stayed the same. However, with each new piece, there is research and development that adds complexity to the visual compositions and illusions of the performance. My earlier work played with the simple transformation that happens when I combine projection and body in one space. The projection feels more physical and the body feels more fantastical — often like a magic show. I have matured over the years as an artist, pushing the technique I’ve developed, to now tell a story with a message.

span through space, past, present and future. Often, these big ideas can only be expressed as surreal metaphors. As an artist and performer, I want to take information about the climate crisis and pass it through my own dream filter, and engage with these ideas as first-hand experiences — a body getting buried in trash, struggling down a flooded river, choking on the exhaust. By performing in these scenarios, I want to create memorable images that the audience can’t shake off.

Theater and live performances are about creating an empathetic bridge between the stories on stage and the audience - that is the significance of the physical presence of the performer and audience, and the generosity of each person taking the time and energy to be in the same space together. I hope to impact the audience by letting my images wash over them, hopefully becoming images that stick in their minds. What are some of your most memorable moments as an artist?

Why do you think it will be important for audiences to experience this specific project?

I think some of my most memorable moments are when I have a conversation with someone from the audience, and it feels like I’ve truly affected them. My previous piece, This World Made Itself is about the history of the earth, and it’s very rewarding to have conversations with people who are not only impacted by the technical complexities of the work, but about their interpretation of what they saw and experienced, especially with young audiences.

Climate crisis is something that should be on everyone’s mind. But the vast, all-inclusiveness of it can feel debilitating since it requires changes to personal habits, societal responsibility, corporate accountability, legislation, and pacts made across the globe. Humanity has lived with a blissful ignorance/ indifference for the before and after of our modern conveniences, because the truths are inconvenient to both the sellers and consumers. Often these processes are made invisible. The “before”: we don’t see where the crude materials that make our everyday products come from, we don’t see how the extraction process affects the environment, nor do we see the energy and other resources it takes to produce the items. The “after”: we can’t see the full span of time that it takes for products (such as plastics) to breakdown and decompose, the toxins that are released, and the dissipation and accumulation of toxic materials in the environment, and to human bodies.

You travel as a one-woman show, often incorporating artist talks and workshops. What is your intention when arriving at a new venue? What do you want people to walk away with? In terms of outreach, I am interested in inviting participants to reconnect to a sense of play and experimentation. I feel like often when working with technology, we are handed a manual and told “this is how you use this and this is what it does” — and too many people don’t stray from that. Invention isn’t just about inventing a technology, but also new ways of using that technology.

CANADA’S BALLET JORGEN THE DIRECTOR’S CUT:

How long have you had the idea to create Anne of Green Gables – The Ballet™?

Anne of Green Gables – The Ballet™

On and off I’ve had the idea for about a decade, but I seriously started looking into it in early 2016. That is when I started the process of seeing what was required to obtain the intellectual property rights to do this work.

Over the last 28 years, Canada’s Ballet Jörgen has produced a total of 216 original creations by 80 choreographers, including eight full-length ballets and five works created especially for children and family programming. Last year the company received exclusive rights to create Anne of Green Gables – The Ballet™, with a score based on the original compositions from Anne of Green Gables – The Musical™. It is the first time the story has been authorized for creation as a full-length ballet, and the world premiere took place in September 2019.

Why did you decide to create a ballet based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novel, Anne of Green Gables? Canada’s Ballet Jörgen is focused on a few core principals. We always focus on doing works by Canadian artists and telling Canadian stories. As we have increasingly focused on recreating classics into a Canadian context, the next logical step was for us to do a full-length classic that was a Canadian story, and really, Anne of Green Gables is the quintessential Canadian story. Coupled with that, for the past decade, we have focused on building a national organization on regional foundations. We want our programs to reflect the regions that we are based in and that support us. Atlantic Canada was our first hub out of Halifax. We feel that it is time to tell a great Canadian story from the Atlantic region. There are other great stories from Atlantic Canada, but really Anne of Green Gables tops them all in terms of name recognition and identifiable qualities with Atlantic Canada. At the same time, Anne of Green Gables is

In this article, CBJ’s Artistic Director, Bengt Jörgen talks about his inspiration, the work of creating a new full-length ballet, and what audiences can expect from this first-ever balletic rendition of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s iconic Canadian story of Anne of Green Gables. The interview was conducted and written up by Victoria Campbell Windle, a Communications Contributor to CBJ.

COVER STORY 7

By the time the work premiered in September, we had spent roughly three years working out all the various details: preparing the synopsis; recording the music; creating new scores for orchestras playing it live; designing costumes; testing sets with the dancers; and of course, creating the work with the dancers, which comes at the end of the creative process because you need all of these other elements before you start creating the work. What do you hope this ballet will bring to audiences? I’m hoping it will engage people. I want people to see the story through dance in a way that makes them go: “Wow, that’s really great. I hadn’t expected to see the story come alive in this way.” I want people to understand that our medium is a great medium to tell stories. We want to share this story with a lot of people. We’re a unique dance company because the audiences that mainly come to see us are new to dance. We attract people who, in many cases, have not been to a theatre. Certainly, we want to share this story as an arts project with people that may have never come in touch with the performing arts before and who may have never come in touch with the story before.

just a great story. We realized there has never been a full-length classical ballet created on this story and felt that we’re the perfect company to do it. What can audiences expect from your version of Anne and her story?

We also hope to spark an interest in Lucy Maud Montgomery amongst a lot of young people and to continue to be part of a process that celebrates a time and place in Canada at the beginning of the twentieth century that talks about things that are very human and important—things that make people both laugh and cry. We hope we can make people feel enriched by bringing another great story to life through the medium of dance.

They’ll recognize Anne from the book as a really strong female character. We’ll be able to speak to a lot of the emotions that Anne displays. In dance, we can effectively show things that are sometimes a little harder when you deal with words. In this case, I think we’re really going to focus the story on the beautiful environment that she lives in. On stage, we’ll be able to bring to life all the things in Prince Edward Island that come to life in Anne’s imagination. We hope it will be entertaining, lighthearted, quick-paced, and full of life. What goes into creating a new full-length ballet?

P h ot o by Ji m Or gi l l

In this case, the story already exists which makes it easier because we don’t have to write the story. At the same time, it won’t be exactly like the book; you have to adapt the story to create the synopsis. Those of us creating the synopsis have to pull out certain things that we can provide a unique perspective on through dance. The score will be orchestrated from Anne of Green Gables – The Musical®, so we also have to be cognitive of the fact that the flow of the story has to fit with the music. We have a team of three people: myself, Heinar Piller, and Sue LePage, who worked for about six to seven months to create a synopsis that works really well.

COVER STORY 8

PROJECT Trio Chamber Music Ensemble PROJECT Trio is a passionate, high energy chamber ensemble comprised of three virtuosic composer/performers from Brooklyn, New York: Greg Pattillo (flute), Eric Stephenson (cello) and Peter Seymour (double bass). Cadenza sat down with Peter to talk about how PROJECT Trio met, the importance of live music, and their passion for educational outreach!

That’s why, when you go see a PROJECT Trio concert, it’s a huge variety of a genre and style and it really represents all three of our different loves of music and our different backgrounds. What are some of your most memorable moments as a group? We have had the good fortune of traveling extensively throughout the world, including several US Department of State tours. The most memorable tour was to the former Soviet Union where we performed in Kiev, Minsk, and throughout Russia. Getting to share our music with international communities has been really exciting. We’ve been to Australia, Hong Kong, and all over Europe. One of the great things is when we travel, it’s just the three of us. We don’t travel with any kind of entourage. It is just the three of us out on the open road.

How did PROJECT Trio find each other? We all went to college together at the Cleveland Institute of Music back in the late nineties. So we’ve actually known each other for well over 20 years now. We were all classically trained and studying at the conservatory, but after hours, we all enjoyed making music of all different styles. After college, we went our separate ways but in 2006 we came together in New York City and formed PROJECT Trio.

Tell me about your current programming and touring. We released a new album over the summer of all new music and arrangements. So there’s a lot of really cool stuff. We have some exciting arrangements including Overture to Ruslan and Ludmilla by Glinka, Tico Tico by Zequinha de Abreu, Yardbird Suite by Charlie Parker, and a great medley of music by The Beatles. Plus, we just finished a brand new arrangement based on West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein. The new original music is truly in the PROJECT Trio style and language...a fusion of classical, jazz, classic rock, pop... we really try to hit on everything in our concerts. We’re constantly creating new stuff.

Each member of the group has developed a unique, personal voice. How do you balance the individual voices in the group while maintaining the clear musical identity of the ensemble? Our instrumentation of bass-cello-flute is completely unique. We searched high and low for music, but there is no existing repertoire for us - so we write and arrange all of our own music. That’s the place where each individual shines because we each bring our musical ideas to the table and that eventually creates the final product.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT 9

How would you describe your performances to someone who has never seen the program or heard of PROJECT Trio? The best way I explain is - high octane chamber music. It’s a show that’s fun, highly energetic, and entertaining. The comment that we get the most is, “I could not stop smiling”. Plus, we are one of the only acts I know where you can bring your kids - your five-year-old or your 15-year-old, plus your friends and your grandma. Everyone will like it, it’s very accessible and it has a very wide appeal. The audience really gets to know us because we talk throughout the show and there’s a lot of storytelling, an hour just flies by. We don’t stop. From the moment we walk on stage to the end, it’s nonstop virtuosic chamber music.

600,000 students, and everywhere we go we use that opportunity to go out into the community.

Why do you think it is important for audiences to experience your work? I think it’s important for audiences to experience any live music. Going out, seeing performers play live, experiencing the concert hall, and seeing an instrumentalist play in their virtuosic way. Live music to me is very important, and so we hope to do our small part of keeping live music alive and well and in our society.

What does the partnership look like when you work with a venue? When a presenter hires us, we are truly at their service. Our goal is to serve our client and the community of the venue - to help them fulfill whatever their mission is.

Nowadays, the live experience is happening less and less. Kids are playing instruments at school less and less. We truly believe that there’s a direct correlation between creativity and being a well-rounded person in society. And so introducing kids to classical, jazz, and other instrumental music is something that we find incredibly important. Plus it’s fun! It’s great to get in there with hundreds of first-graders in a gym….no bells and whistles, no puppets, no screens, no amplification. We can entertain them and teach them about the history of music in 40 minutes.

Social media has been a very successful platform for you - what has that meant for the group? We started the ensemble at a unique time of the internet. It was when YouTube started, so we got in at the ground level of that platform. It was just luck, but one of the things that we are always trying to do is to perform as much as possible, in front of as many people as possible. So, the internet success was by chance, but it was because we’re always seeking out new audiences. Plus, being at the forefront of things is the way to make it!

You are well known for your incredible educational engagement. Can you talk more about that? We believe strongly in music education and music education plays a big role in who we are today. From the very inception of PROJECT Trio, we knew that education would be a large part of what we do. We not only enjoy it, but we also have a product that’s good for introducing kids to instrumental music, both jazz and classical. We have played for over

iCadenza Tips: Letting Go and Learning to Delegate by iCadenza writers

One of the keys to a successful career is learning the art of delegation. It’s simple: the more ways you can find to delegate routine tasks, the more free time you have to work on the development of your career.

you can’t delegate effectively without training the other party involved. There’s a lot of information and clarity they need. Sometimes they need to try things out first before they take over. So many people don’t delegate because they wait until they’re up to their ears and there’s no time to get someone else on board.

At iCadenza we’ve noticed two key stumbling blocks to delegation: (1) Letting go of control. (2) Finding the time to delegate.

Delegation without Training is a Recipe for Failure

We all love control. But being overly controlling can cause more problems than it solves. If you’re holding on tightly to control things, you are not necessarily being effective because it can be hard to see things clearly and to solve problems. This is the key to learning to delegate – letting other people share the load of work and help you develop your dreams….

Has this happened to you? You’re working on a time-sensitive project. You’re totally overscheduled and trying to do too much. Someone jumps in to help but you don’t have time to give them clear instructions on what they need to do. It turns into a disaster and you think – I should have just done this myself. We conclude that delegation doesn’t work when the problem was not preparing to delegate.

Delegating means Learning to Let Go You can develop your awareness of noticing when you are holding on to too much control. Ask these questions – What can I let go of in this moment? Where can I loosen my grip to let someone else help? Look at everything you’re taking on in your personal life and career and ask: What do I need to have direct oversight over? What could someone else handle and oversee?

Put time into the schedule for training, for trial runs, and for asking questions. Because once you’re in the thick of things, it’s too late to delegate. Getting Delegation to Work for You Decide to let go. Look for places in your life where tasks can be delegated. Schedule time to train. Have more time and be more effective in your life and career!

It’s an irony of the overscheduled that they struggle to find the time to delegate because delegation takes planning. You can’t delegate at the moment things get to be too much because
