GETTING THERE The warm-hearted town of Stellenbosch is located just over 50km from Cape Town and only 30km from Cape Town International Airport, making it an easily accessible destination for a weekend away, longer getaway or business trip for locals and international visitors alike. Visitors also have several other options to travel to Stellenbosch, including metered taxis, Uber, transfer companies, tour operators or self-drive.

GETTING AROUND Our beautiful and historic town centre of Stellenbosch is small and walkable. Consider renting a bicycle and exploring the winelands by bike or hop on a Vine Hopper and see the sights in slow motion. SOCIO ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

SOCIO ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT At the heart of Visit Stellenbosch is a determination to drive socio-economic development, focusing on job creation, skills improvement and enterprise development. All stakeholders collaborate to create high-impact tourism-led solutions to tackle pressing social and economic issues and work together to develop opportunities for our communities to thrive. The areas of impact include skills training and employment, tourism enterprise development and localised ownership, representation and economic inclusion of all Stellenbosch communities and the development of social integration and cohesion. A significant component of our socio-economic development strategy is supporting local black-owned tourism enterprises, to bring about economic inclusion and to create products that can offer visitors authentic and culturally unique experiences. We aim to help tourism entrepreneurs become ‘market ready’ and, secondly, help them gain access to the tourism market through promotion. To bring about economic empowerment, these enterprises need to be well structured, formalised and included in the larger tourism product offering in Stellenbosch.

Township and Village was established as a social enterprise in 2018, with self-sustainability as a central goal. The social enterprise is based on an economic stimulus model that promotes the financial growth and self-reliance of marginalised entrepreneurs in the tourism sector. Visit Stellenbosch entered into a formal partnership with Township and Village in 2019 and the social enterprise is our flagship tourism enterprise development project. We support the development of the social enterprise strategically through tourism intelligence, product development, funding and marketing support. VISITING THE STELLENBOSCH WINE ROUTES Stellenbosch Wine Routes is one of the top six tourist destinations in the Western Cape. This world-class route has been divided into five sub routes to make for easier exploring. These sub routes are based on physical location and have no relation to the Wine of Origin system or any areas within the Stellenbosch region. The sub-routes include the Greater Simonsberg, Stellenbosch Berg, Helderberg, Stellenbosch Valley and Bottelary Hills. There are over 100 wine cellar doors and tasting experiences along the route, many of them boasting historical farms with beautiful Cape Dutch manor houses, gardens, hotels and fine-dining restaurants. The Stellenbosch Wine Route is the oldest in South Africa. World-class wines have been produced here since 1971 and have contributed to creating an international profile for this Boland university town.

We gladly share the following guidelines and tips with you to ensure that your visit will be enjoyable and memorable. These are guidelines only. Each cellar has its own system of operation. Where to start Use Stellenbosch Wine Routes, the Perfect Pairing, as a reference to define the activities you wish to experience. Stellenbosch Wine Routes has so much to offer, so have a look at our handy guide detailing all the different experiences and tastings available. Decide which cellar you wish to visit first. You will need at least one hour for each farm visit. Allow for approx. 20 minutes traveling time between stops. This is the average travel time for farms in the same region. Try to join a cellar tour (normally available in the mornings). You will find it most informative, entertaining and interesting. Cellar tours during harvest time in particular give you the opportunity to see how grapes are processed in the cellar. February is peak harvest time. Consult the Stellenbosch Wine Routes map. Decide where you want to enjoy lunch. We suggest you arrive at your lunch venue between 12:30 and 14:00 as many kitchens close at 15:00. Arrive at your last cellar at least one hour before closing time to ensure you can still taste their wines. Avoid wearing heavy fragrances as this can interfere with the tasting experience. Many wineries are family friendly and can offer tastings for children or play areas and children’s activities. To fully enjoy your wine routes experience, arrange a dedicated designated driver or private shuttle, guide and a private tour, join a tour group or jump o the hop-on-hop-off service.

WINE TOURS Drinking and driving is a serious offence, so be sure to appoint a designated driver or better still, book a guide, driver, or go on an organised wine tour. There are many different options available, such as joining a group to explore the wine farms and enjoy tastings, taking the hop-on-hop off service or booking a personal guide for an exclusive tour. For guests who would like to make the most of their visit to Stellenbosch and surrounds, there’s a diversity of wine tour operators to ensure you can explore our warm-hearted town and wine routes, safely and easily without missing a beat.

I’m here, what now Expect to pay a tasting fee at most wineries. Most wineries offer different tasting options. Ask the tasting room assistant for guidance. Taste dry white wines first, proceed to red wines and sample sweeter wines last. Sparkling wines and Cap Classiques can be enjoyed between wine types to clean your palate. The tasting order will allow your palate to progress naturally. Do not swallow all the wines you’ve tasted! Spittoons are provided. Smoking is not allowed in tasting rooms and some wineries are totally smoke free zones. Some wineries may serve you at tables and others may only serve at the tasting counter. Ask your tasting room assistant.

How to purchase wine Most cellars allow you to buy mixed cases of wine. Wine can be delivered to your door on request. Ask the tasting room assistant for delivery options. Some cellars offer fragile packaging, especially when shipping overseas. Wine is the perfect gift, for yourselves or loved ones, to remember our region.

History and culture lovers will be delighted simply walking the streets. Stellenbosch is one of the best places in South Africa to take in Cape Dutch architecture. Visit the Stellenbosch Village Museum, comprising of four houses of historical interest and their gardens. Each of these beautiful homes represents a different period in the architectural development of Stellenbosch. Visit the legendary De Akker, the oldest licensed pub in town, or enjoy early evening drinks at the buzzing Bartinney Wine and Champagne Bar. Get into the late-night swing of things at Balboa Balcony Bar (23years and older only) or tempt yourself with an array of exotic cocktails at the glitzy Bar Barric.

More itinerary inspirations Self-drive is recommended for venturing farther afield, or travel via shuttle. There are several tours of the town, winelands, and outlying regions to choose from. • Book a Vine Hopper tour, cycle tour through the vineyards, whale watching experience (SeptMarch), wine blending experience, Big 5 wine safari, and more! • Engage with local artists and crafters, enjoy traditional food, and taste the locally brewed beer on one of our famous Kayamandi township tours. • While many food and wine festivals dot the Western Cape landscape, the WineTown Stellenbosch FINE Wine and Food Showcase each August remains the most extensive and prestigious. • The Stellenbosch Golf Club is one of the most celebrated of its kind in South Africa. Ranking as the 4th oldest course in the country, it has played host to five South African Master’s tournaments. • Stellenbosch is home to the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve which offers a variety of activities for adventure travellers. Here you can hike, mountain bike and ride horses through lush mountain terrain. • With brandy’s long history in South Africa – it was brought here in the 1800’s by Dutch sailors – there is much to tell, especially at Van Ryn Brandy Distillery.

#VisitStellenbosch for Art Lovers John Dewey said: “Art is not the possession of the few who are recognized writers, painters, musicians; it is the authentic expression of any and all individuality. Those who have the gift of creative expression in unusually large measure disclose the meaning of the individuality of others to those others. In participating in the work of art, they become artists in their activity. They learn to know and honour individuality in whatever form it appears. The fountains of creative activity are discovered and released. The free individuality which is the source of art is also the final source of creative development in time.” In and around Stellenbosch you’ll find many opportunities to drink in beauty and creative expression, whether it is a garden dedicated to sculpture or one of the many galleries exhibiting classic or work from emerging artists, you will find your fix. Start your day with a visit the Rupert Museum. The Rupert Museum showcases the unique private art collection started in the 1940s by the late Anton and Huberte Rupert. The exhibitions change seasonally and often include the acclaimed public commission, completed between 1929 and 1932, The Johannesburg Station Panels by Artist JH Pierneef. These works have been characterised as the epitome of the South African landscape genre. On the last Saturday of every month, the Museum showcases a #MuseumSaturday programme often including food and/or wine. Open Tuesday - Sunday Time: Allow a couple of hours to explore, reflect and immerse in this great museum of modern art. T: 021 888 3344 W: www.rupertmuseum.org

After spending a few hours in the Rupert Museum, make your way to the Stellenbosch CBD for lunch at one of the many restaurants and eateries in town, such as Genki, Hussar Grill, Fat Butcher, Helena’s, Jardine Restaurant, Spek en Bone to name a few. For a full day excursion join a Winelands Art Tour and take in the sips and sights of Stellenbosch as you explore the cellars, sculpture gardens, museums and art studios of the Cape Winelands. You’ll meet local artists and winemakers alike as you discover and celebrate their unique creativity and crafts in the company of a knowledgeable guide. Safe transport between venues is provided and the tours include all wine/gin tastings, bubbly/lemonade, and coffee/tea on arrival. It excludes lunch and gratuity. T: 083 227 7501 W: www.sipsandsights.co.za Spend the rest of the day browsing the many galleries around Stellenbosch, ideally situated in short walking distance from each other. Here are a few of our favourite galleries: Die DorpStraat Gallery, Church Street GUS (Gallery University Stellenbosch), Dorp Street The Red Teapot Gallery, cnr Church & Andringa Streets

Vincent da Silva, Church Street SMAC Art Gallery, Church Street Stellenbosch Art Gallery, Andringa Street Absolut Art Gallery, cnr Plein & Ryneveld Streets Hembisa Jewellery, Drostdy Street After spending a day browsing the galleries and shops of Stellenbosch, pop into one of our wine bars or coffee shops lining the streets of Stellenbosch for a refreshing glass of wine or a cup of coffee. If you wish to spend the night, accommodation that will inspire your creative soul includes: Majeka House – www.majekahouse.co.za Spier Hotel – www.spier.co.za Bartinney Wine Estate - www.bartinney.co.za A must-do experience for art lovers in Stellenbosch is a visit to the Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden, situated a stone throw outside of Stellenbosch. In this garden of private myth, the artist explores the Jungian notion of ‘the wilderness within.’ More than 60 sculptures constituting a comprehensive record of his artistic development thus far have been carefully sited along 4 km of walking paths. The project began in 2009 when Lewis hired an excavator to create a level play area for his children behind their house on the farm and began creating what would become a 7-hectare sculpture garden. Visit to the garden is by appointment only and can be enjoyed as part of a scheduled, guided tour or explored at your own pace.

After spending a few hours at Dylan Lewis, head on over to the Equus Gallery at Cavalli Wine and Stud Estate. One of the Winelands’ best-kept secrets, the subterranean Equus Gallery hosts contemporary exhibitions of local artists and sculptors (all available for purchase) under a stretched translucent ceiling with backlit LEDs to simulate daylight.

T: W:

You can also enjoy a wine tasting at Cavalli, dine at the restaurant for lunch or dinner or go on a stud tour. 021 855 3218 www.cavalliestate.com

Round your day off with a visit to Spier Wine Farm. Pair a delightful wine tasting with a visit to the craft market and mosaic garden at Spier. Showcasing contemporary and traditional works by South African artists and crafters, the outdoor display houses gallery-level paintings and handmade Nguni-style tapestries, along with handmade jewellery, wood and leather work, textiles and ceramics. There’s something for everyone at Spier! Spier offers a variety of dining experiences and family friendly activities including eagle encounters, wine tastings, segway tours for the adventurous as well as a world-class hotel and conference facilities. T: 021 809 1100 W: www.spier.co.za

On day three in the winelands, explore the northern side of Stellenbosch. Delaire Graff Laurence Graff’s private art collection is something to behold. In 2013, a very special painting was returned home to South Africa and Delaire Graff Estate - one of the most iconic pieces of the 20th Century – and the first piece of art to inspire a lifelong passion in Laurence Graff. Guests can admire Vladimir Tretchikoff’s iconic Chinese Girl, currently on display in the entrance to the main building. T: 021 885 8160 W: www.delaire.co.za

While at Delaire Graff, you can enjoy a wine tasting or sit down for lunch or dinner at one of their two acclaimed restaurants, Indochine or Delaire Graff Restaurant. T: 021 885 8160 W: www.delaire.co.za

Glass Museum at Glenelly Estate May de Lencquesaing’s spectacular glass collection housed in the winery pays tribute to her life-long passion for rare and contemporary glass. You’ll be surprised and delighted to discover the many attributes beautiful glass shares with fine wine. One of the largest privately-owned collections in the world, the exhibits range from the first and second centuries to modern classics, including pieces by Salvador Dali and Lino Tagliapietra. Visitors are able to learn through a journey retracing the 2000-year history of glassmaking, each of the 500 beautifully illuminated creations, antique and contemporary from around the world, telling a story. In the gardens, you’ll find many regal sculptures by masters like Deborah Bell, Dylan Lewis, Anton Smit and Lionel Smit. Marvol Art Gallery at Hazendal Estate The latest addition to the art scene in the Stellenbosch Winelands is the Marvol Art Gallery at the newly renovated Hazendal Estate. This unique exhibition space offers a glimpse into Russian art, culture, and history. Alongside the owner’s extensive private collections, the gallery provides a platform for old and new artistic trends between South Africa and Russia with rotating exhibitions, talks and events.

Exhibitions are changed regularly and once a year, visitors are treated to a spectacular collection of Fabergé Eggs, from the owner’s private collection, so keep an eye out for it! Hazendal Estate also offers three dining options, wine tastings and a state-of-theart Edutainment centre, Wonderdal, to entertain children aged five to thirteen.
