Florida College Junior Major: Nursing

How would you describe yourself to someone who doesn't know you?

I would describe myself as independent and self-motivated. I am almost always busy doing something or traveling somewhere. I love to live in the moment and make memories with those around me. atmosphere is more inviting to questions and comments. The professor can easily tell when a topic is not understood like it should be. The smaller class sizes, also, allows students to know their peers a little better. For example, I am a nursing major, and our cohort has 13 people. All of the previous nursing cohorts have been around a similar size, and that size allows students to develop a different kind of relationship than would be possible at a large university.

How was FC camp an influence on you?

FC camp gave me some of my best friends; my camp friends were always people I could depend on even though we did not live close. FC camp, also, gave me some of the best mentors in my life. Every counselor is different, and yet they all serve the same God. I have been able to learn something from each counselor I have had; I have always felt heard after long talks with some of my favorite counselors. FC camp, also, always came at the time when I just needed to disconnect with the world. I loved having a week with friends, bible study, and God without distractions that technology brings. Camp would also light a fire in me, and I left camp feeling spiritually rejuvenated.

What has your experience at FC been like?

My experience at FC has been such a joy. Of course, there have been some challenges like family passing and other personal things, but Florida College offers the best support system to get through anything. The professors and staff truly care for you and want you to stay at FC. They care not because my tuition helps pay the bills, but they care because they love me as a sister in Christ and a friend. FC has given me the opportunity to play college soccer without having any conflicts with church. I grew up playing travel soccer for years, and I felt like I was always missing something soccer related because of church. The FC Women's soccer team has been the first team that supports and does not compete with my faith. Similarly to camp, I am able to have fun at FC without feeling like I have to compromise my morals or personal beliefs, and that is something I will always value.

What has been your favorite thing about FC?

I have loved the relationships that FC offers with both peers and staff members. I have made friendships that have been so natural and comfortable. I truly feel that there is a group for everyone at FC. Also, the staff at FC dives into the material and buys into their students. I love being able to worship beside the people that teach me at school. The faculty welcomes students into their home and treats them as family which is an opportunity most colleges do not have.

Is there anything you are doing at FC that you think would be difficult to do at a large public university?

I think a smaller university like FC can offer better professor-student relations than a larger university. The largest class size I have been in at FC is probably 50 people maximum, but even that class size is very uncommon. At most other universities, the class size would be the norm. A smaller class size offers so many benefits. The atmosphere is more inviting to questions and comments.

Do you play a sport for FC, or are you involved in intramurals?

I play soccer at FC, and I have been very involved with intramurals the past two years. Soccer has been so amazing so far. FC has really helped me continue playing with my love for the sport. I love being able to play different intramurals; they are always so fun. Some of my best memories have been on intramural sports fields. It definitely reminds me of sports at camp. We play volleyball, flag football, soccer, basketball, ultimate frisbee, and softball. I feel like the combination of those six sports really hit all the different demographics at FC.

What sort of internship or job placement does FC offer for your major?

In my nursing degree, FC offers different clinicals in the Tampa Bay Area. A clinical is basically when a group of nursing students go to a hospital to shadow and gain experience while still in college. When I start the nursing program in the fall, I will have one clinical day a week, and when I finish in May of 2026, I will have four clinical days a week. I have heard many hospitals have loved having FC nursing students for clinicals and even hire some after graduation.

What advice would you give to someone considering Florida College?

My advice to someone considering FC is to keep the option of FC open. There is a common thought that FC is unobtainable to most people, but I strongly believe that to be false. There are so many different scholarship opportunities at FC, and the financial aid and admissions team truly want people to experience FC. The faculty at FC will try everything they can to make sure you can go to FC. Also, if you are considering FC, just try it. You'll never know how life changing FC can be unless you give it a chance. I know for me I would rather try something than regret not trying or wondering about the what ifs. I truly believe FC is a place where so many different types of individuals can not only survive but also thrive spiritually, academically, socially, mentally, and even athletically.

River Hills Retreat is the name of the new campground in Hayden, Alabama. We are continuously working toward making it ready to accommodate the best week of the year. It will take hard work and finances to make this dream a reality. Please support us, and ultimately our kids, any way you can. If you have a home improvement skill, and can donate your time, please contact us.

In April, we hosted a Mother-Daughter retreat, which was our first over-night event at RHR. Thanks to Amy Dixon for her impeccable planning.

The Big House is now ready for small retreats, family reunions, and overnight stays.
