CABRINI FOUNDATION

Message

FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE AND DIRECTOR

In 2023 Cabrini celebrated 75 years of care from the heart.

In 1948, ten Sisters of Spirit departed Rome for Melbourne to take over St Benedict’s, a small hospital in Malvern. Since then, Cabrini has established new sites and health care programs across south-east Melbourne, strengthening Cabrini’s position in delivering high quality, compassionate care to people in need.

We thank every supporter who believes in our mission by donating to support our work. The Cabrini Foundation creates ways for patients, their families and our community to connect and show gratitude, enabling Cabrini to continue providing exceptional care for patients, now and in the future. And the last year saw donors contribute a record $22M to Cabrini’s mission. In this report you will read just a few of the stories of impact that are made possible by donor support – upgrading the hybrid theatre at Cabrini Malvern; purchasing

the latest medical equipment and technology; ward refurbishments and the conversion of multi-bed rooms to single rooms; a new Breast Cancer Nurse specialist; the establishment of an Endowed Chair of Colorectal Cancer Research; education scholarships awarded to nurses; and a new app that is improving outcomes for cardiac patients.

But we cannot sit still. Demand for healthcare is increasing and we expect to manage 150,000 admissions per year, particularly in the fields of cancer, cardiac and orthopaedic care. To meet this demand, we are transforming and expanding Cabrini Malvern with a project named ‘Cabrini Next Era’.

We are deeply thankful to all donors and supporters for your continued commitment to ensuring every Cabrini patient receives excellence in care, now and in the future.

We sincerely thank the voluntary members of the Cabrini Foundation Board for their commitment to the work of the Foundation:

20 YEARS

ALAN, ADA AND EVA SELWYN

“On behalf of Cabrini Australia, I sincerely thank the Selwyn family for your exceptional generosity and loyalty over the last 20 years.

We are incredibly grateful for your leadership in philanthropy, which has allowed us to provide quality, compassionate care. The Alan, Ada and Eva Selwyn Emergency Department is the heart of our community. We treat more than 25,000 adults, infants, children and adolescents every year: 24 hours, 7 days a week. With thanks to you, we can continue to provide vital care and urgent medical attention, in the very best facilities.”

The Selwyn family’s philanthropic journey with Cabrini has been long and extremely generous. You’ve saved countless lives and brought the very best in care to so many.

Eva Selwyn speaks to the values instilled by her parents:

“My parents, Alan and Ada were very fortunate to have been in a position of being able and willing to give to many people and philanthropic causes over their lifetimes. These spanned many diverse areas: including the arts, numerous educational and medical causes, including the establishment of a Chair of Medical Research and a laboratory in Clinical Infertility and Molecular Medicine in Israel and many welfare and cultural initiatives and philanthropic efforts, both here in Australia and overseas.

I am very honoured to have our family name associated with the Endowed Chair of Colorectal Research at Cabrini, which was a very important area of interest for my late father, as I carry on that support.

I was taught by my parents to always ‘give back’ and I am blessed to continue that legacy.

Cabrini Malvern is, and has always been, such an important part of our lives and I am thrilled to be able pursue my relationship with my ‘Cabrini Family’.

Cabrini is such a wonderful and important institution. This will continue with ‘The Next Era’ redevelopment of the Malvern hospital. For me, the Emergency Department is so significant and I am very proud to carry on this legacy in our family name. The Alan, Ada and Eva Selwyn Emergency Department will always remain the centre and heart of the hospital in its care of, and devotion to, patients and their families.”

Home is where the heart is.

With thanks to a philanthropic grant from the Percy Baxter Charitable Trust, we are delighted to be able to support Cabrini’s cardiac patients with an innovative resource.

Combining innovation and technology, Cabrini’s Cardiac Rehabilitation team has launched a new education resource app for our cardiac patients called ‘Cardiapp’ to help heart patients recover in the comfort of their own surrounds.

Cardiapp is a digital education package designed to support patients rehabilitating from cardiac events, reducing the need to come to hospital.

The tool has already benefitted 450 patients attending Cardiac Rehabilitation at Cabrini. The app includes a library of recorded videos and written articles from the multi-disciplinary Cardiac Rehabilitation team, including exercise physiologists, pharmacists, dietitians, occupational therapists, health psychologists and cardiac nurses.

Patients are supported throughout their recovery with up-to-date information and advice including:

• Managing your risk factors

• Occupational Therapy and exercise advice and videos

• Dietary and nutritional advice and tips for maximum heart health.

DID YOU KNOW

90%

of Australians have at least one risk factor for heart disease and 25% of Australians have three or more risk factors for heart disease. The more risk factors patients have, the higher the chance of having heart problems. As there is no one cause of heart disease, working out an individual’s risk factors and how to modify or reduce them is the first step.

The Cardiapp also encourages patients to ‘know your numbers’ – understanding cholesterol levels, blood pressure level and blood sugar levels, healthy weight and waist measurements. Understanding these results around heart health motivates patients to change some of these levels if they are too high. By helping patients to track their levels and measurements and improve their diet and exercise, the Cardiapp helps patients stay on the path to living a healthy life.

We would like to acknowledge Cabrini Cardiac Nurse Niamh Dormer’s dedication in leading this life-changing project and thank the Percy Baxter Charitable Trust for its generous support. Together we are improving cardiac patients’ quality of life from the comfort of home.

CABRINI CARDIAPP LAUNCH

LISA THURIN WOMEN’S HEALTH CENTRE

The Lisa Thurin Women’s Health Centre is Australia’s inaugural women-only private mental health facility, providing treatment to more than 500 women since it opened in September 2021. Cabrini’s Chief of Mental Health & Outreach, Sharon Sherwood recently met up with Patron Lisa Thurin, Director Gandel Foundation, to discuss the Centre’s impact to date and plans for the future.

The mission of the Lisa Thurin Women’s Health Centre is ‘to provide world class, individually tailored mental health care for women with mental health issues’.

Sharon Sherwood, Cabrini’s Chief of Mental Health & Outreach is passionate about the Centre being led by women, for women. “It is critical to understand that women face unique challenges internal and external - impacting their mental health, such as domestic violence, hormonal changes, and psychological factors, necessitating a deeper understanding of their individual experiences compared to men. There are definite and well-defined differences in mental illness experiences between genders, including prevalence, diagnostic categories, onset, biological vulnerabilities, and treatment responses,” shares Sharon.

Women’s unique life stages, such as pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause, introduce specific mental health challenges and treatment considerations due to hormonal changes.1

Addressing women’s mental health is vital not only for improving women’s quality of life but also to benefit families, communities and future generations. It underscores the importance of seeing women’s mental health as a collective concern, essential to societal wellbeing.

The Lisa Thurin Women’s Health Centre, established through the support of Lisa Thurin and the Gandel Foundation, marks a significant advancement in women’s mental health care in Australia. Located in Elsternwick, Melbourne, when it was launched in 2021 it became Australia’s first dedicated women-only mental health hospital.

Recognising the unique challenges women face, including the need for a safe and compassionate treatment environment, the Centre provides specialised care tailored to women’s needs. It offers treatment for a range of mental health needs, from mood disorders, stress, to trauma and addiction.

The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the crisis in mental health services, with a notable increase in women presenting with serious mental health issues.

Lisa Thurin, Patron to the Centre and Director of Gandel Foundation saw the urgent need to create the Centre, a pioneering women’s mental health facility. The service has not only filled an urgent gap in providing dedicated in-patient mental health services for women but also showcased a model of targeted philanthropy driving gender-specific solutions. “My long-standing commitment to addressing the challenges women face in mental health care reflects a deep belief in understanding the importance of creating safe, supportive environments for women’s healing and recovery journeys. As pillars of not just their families but the broader society as well, it is imperative that we ensure we support women’s distinct and specific mental wellbeing needs,” shares Lisa.

The Centre’s establishment underlines the power of philanthropy to make tangible differences in communities, improving women’s physical health, emotional well-being, and overall quality of life.

The success of the Centre has set a precedent, inspiring the development of similar services across Australia including the Women’s PARC in Sunshine, WREN at the Alfred, Belmont Private in Queensland and Bethesda Hospital in Perth; thereby broadening its contribution to advancing women’s mental health care. Thank you Lisa, Sharon and team for your commitment to ensuring women receive the care they need.

Community OUR GENEROUS

In 2023 our generous Cabrini community donated a total of $4,367,542 to fund state-of-the-art equipment and technology. Your support has immeasurable impact and ensures the best outcomes for our patients and their families.

$1.3M raised

APPEAL TO UPGRADE HYBRID THEATRE

The Cabrini community came together to raise an amazing $1.3M for the upgrade of our hybrid theatre at Malvern. This support has ensured our experienced multidisciplinary team has everything they need to treat critically ill vascular, cardiovascular and neurological patients for many years to come.

The theatre will be upgraded with state-of-the-art equipment to enable surgeons to perform minimally invasive procedures effectively and efficiently.

Monitors

Like TV screens, these large monitors are placed around the theatre so surgeons can monitor progress and accuracy in real time. It also allows theatre staff to follow the procedure and pre-empt any changes in equipment or implements required.

Gantry X-ray unit

This large C-shaped x-ray is suspended from the ceiling and can be moved over or under any part of the patient. Once placed in the exact position, it captures the anatomy of a patient in high definition.

Operating table

Specialty operating table that interacts with the Gantry X-ray unit. Surgeons can move it along the beam as they insert a graft, and can track the tip of the stent in relation to the patient’s anatomy.

Radiation reduction technology

High levels of radiation are used in medical imaging, exposing staff and patients. This new technology controls and reduces the spread of radiation by keeping it focused on the area of the procedure only.

Control Room Interface

A team of radiographers and lab technicians monitor and record the procedure in an adjacent room. They give feedback to the surgeon on dynamics of the procedure such as rotation, angle and depth of the device. They also report back on a patient’s vital signs.

3D Imaging

Allowing all images to be seen in 3D enhances the accuracy of the placement and location of stents.

Creating a healing environment for paediatric patients

PAEDIATRICS WARD TRANSFORMATION

Patients and visitors to Cabrini’s Paediatric ward now get a taste of iconic Australian locations.

The door to each patient room is now covered with a colourful decal of iconic locations, including Byron Bay, Sydney and the Gold Coast. Paediatric ward Associate Nurse Unit Manager Meg Brown said the artwork, completed by students at Lauriston Girls’ School, has really lifted the atmosphere of the unit.

In addition to the doors, both reception desks are now covered in artwork completed by students at Malvern Central Primary and Malvern Primary schools.

And the main corridor shows jungle scenes, complete with tigers, giraffes and lions.

New electric cots have been purchased for our littlest patients, with thanks to grant funding from The Pierce Armstrong Foundation and The Geok Hua Wong Charitable Trust. Foundation supporters have also funded new paediatric treatment carts and an update to the paediatric ward waiting rooms.

Thank you to all involved in this transformation; helping to ensure our youngest patients receive the highest standard of care.

Helping save lives

Paediatric ward Unit Manager Clara Officer said the colour and creativity on the ward creates numerous benefits: “It’s well researched that children’s reactions to their environment directly affect their physical health. A healing environment consists of four elements: emotions, space design, interpersonal interaction and pleasant surroundings. I think this ward now ticks all those boxes.”

EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT & ONCOLOGY WARD ULTRASOUND MACHINES

Donor funding has provided two new bedside ultrasound machines for Cabrini’s Emergency Department and Oncology ward.

Portable ultrasound systems can improve patient care when facing challenging and changing conditions. This stateof-the-art technology enables healthcare staff to scan and monitor patients at their bedside, helping with faster diagnosis and intervention in the Emergency Department.

The Oncology ward uses the ultrasound to assist with inserting cannulas to patients whose veins are compromised from chemotherapy or where they are difficult to find.

“The donation of this bedside ultrasound machine enhances our Emergency Department’s capabilities, ensuring safer procedures and swifter diagnosis of critical conditions, a testament to the impact of donor support.”

Scholarships

Nurses are the beating heart of compassionate care here at Cabrini.

“As a nurse myself, I understand the courage and commitment it takes to care for others and the positive difference it makes for patients to have expert care, a gentle touch and a friendly smile.

Cabrini has more than 1900 nurses and their professional development is supported by our Nurse Scholarships & Education Program. This program is 100% donor-funded and I am proud to be a donor. Your gift and mine ensure that Cabrini nurses and healthcare professionals have an opportunity to attend conferences, workshops, visit centres of excellence and undertake postgraduate study, to ensure continual best practice patient care.

With donors supporting this program, Cabrini can retain the best staff and empower them to continue to expand their knowledge through education and training. This is a win:win – a win for nurses to advance their careers and a win for patients experiencing the very best in nursing care.”

The last few years have been challenging for healthcare staff nationally, and we were thrilled to award 39 Nursing Scholarships in 2023. This is the largest number of scholarships awarded in one year and was only made possible by generous supporters who believe in professional development for nurses and healthcare professionals.

A DEDICATED METASTATIC BREAST CANCER NURSE

Cabrini is the first private hospital to have a dedicated Metastatic McGrath Breast Cancer Nurse. Cabrini’s breast cancer unit has been caring for women for over 15 years and treats more than 570 patients each year (12% of all cases in Victoria).

Metastatic Breast Cancer Nurse Janine believes no woman should go through their breast cancer journey alone.

‘It’s a real privilege to be able to provide that support for women at a very difficult time of their lives. It’s frightening for them when cancer comes back or spreads. So I’m there for them for their whole journey, their treatment decisions, meeting with their doctors, and going to treatments with them. It’s providing that extra layer of support.”

Thank you

Janine brings extensive experience in both surgical and oncology nursing. She supports women through:

♥ Providing 1:1 support, information and care from diagnosis through to treatment and advanced care planning

♥ Liaising with Oncologists, GPs and Allied Health team members, advocating for patients and ensuring a treatment care plan appropriate for individual patients’ needs.

♥ With referrals to community support services and Palliative home care for additional support when needed.

The strength of Gabby’s lifelong connection to Cabrini inspired her to give back by leaving a gift in her will.

A Family Legacy

Gabby Walters has had a connection to Cabrini Hospital for over 75 years. When her grandparents, Dr Henry Shannon and wife Rahel, bought their home at 181 Wattletree Road, Malvern for £5,300 at the end of the Depression, so began a part of the Cabrini story. Henry wasn’t sure what he wanted to do when he came back from the Second World War. But fate intervened; he set up general practice at his home at 181 Wattletree Rd, Malvern. This was next door to where the Cabrini Sisters were based. Gabby’s mother used to share a hot chocolate with the Sisters. In 1956, Henry sold the property to Cabrini for £19,000.

Gabby followed her mother’s path as a nurse. Gabby went on to become an Associate Charge Nurse in Haematology and Oncology and became a Clinical Teacher for Graduate Nurses.

Continuing her family’s love of volunteering, Gabby has been a devoted volunteer at Cabrini’s Wig Room for over three years.

“Providing support for people going through cancer treatment, the Wig Room is such a positive and empowering program. A wig restores their self-esteem and control of a situation that is very much out of their control,” shared Gabby.

It’s the strength of her connection to Cabrini that has inspired Gabby to include Cabrini in her Will - a gift that will ensure her family legacy will continue forever.

“My own connection to the hospital started with my grandparents and my mother and father were looked after by Cabrini Palliative and Supportive Care. I have also been patient a few times and it’s my ‘go to’ place for healthcare because it is so good. The fact that I can lead a life which allows me to give back in some way is very important to me. I feel like a very small cog in a much bigger wheel.

“There is always a very strong and fundamental reason why people decide to leave something and give back. It’s a sense of gratitude really, for what Australia has done for our family and the fact that it is such an open community here,” said Gabby.

Thank you Gabby and family for all that you continue to share with Cabrini across the generations.

Next Era

Transforming Cabrini Malvern is mission critical.

Demand for Cabrini’s care is increasing - we expect to manage 150,000 admissions per year, focussing on conditions of ageing, cancer, cardiac and orthopaedic care. To meet this demand, our Next Era capital project will expand and transform Cabrini Malvern.

The transformation of the Malvern hospital will be the most significant project ever undertaken by Cabrini worldwide. It will only be possible with significant philanthropic investment from families keen to make their mark on this prestigious, high-profile project. We are deeply grateful to the families who have already committed to our bold vision.

Our plans for the construction of a new building at Cabrini Malvern, including single bed ensuite rooms, consulting suites and a world-leading cancer research facility, are progressing well.

Building works have already commenced, with two new operating theatres opening in 2023.

We are continuing with ward refurbishments and the conversion of multi-bed wards to single rooms and the remodelling of the Emergency Department is planned for 2024.

Transforming the Malvern site will ensure Cabrini:

• provides world-leading specialists and surgical care

• is driven by the latest research and technology

• delivers care in comfortable, state-of-the-art facilities.

“I could not have been more impressed with the quality of the nursing staff who looked after me. They have been responsive, professional and friendly, and gave me the sense of truly being invested in my recovery, comfort and care. Such service is the result of a great team and organisation. Together, these great professionals provide not only supportive care but were authentic and focused on my recovery. These are some of the traits of great leaders. Thank you so very much.” - Cabrini patient
