An Invitation to Los Cabos Welcome to Los Cabos

mWELCOME

Exciting activities and natural splendor meet in Los Cabos.

¡Bienvenidos a Los Cabos! It’s little wonder that LOS CABOS has long been a favorite retreat of the rich and famous. Pristine coves, sparkling aquamarine waters, vibrant sea life, enchanting desert landscapes and sunny beaches make this region at the tip of the BAJA PENINSULA a captivatingly beautiful destination. Throw in sizzling nightlife, luxurious resorts, magnificent vacation villas, legendary sport fishing and championship golf courses and you have a vacation playground like no other. Once the getaway of only a wealthy few who could afford a private plane or yacht, the arrival of international flights and the creation of a highway system in the latter half of the twentieth century made visiting Los Cabos a breeze. Just a short flight from many major U.S. cities, Cabo is an EASILY ACCESSIBLE exotic vacation destination. Furthermore, great weather, modern tourism infrastructure, the prevalence of English-speaking staff in many of the resort areas and a reputation for safety have helped Cabo gain a loyal year-round following of sun-seeking tourists.

WELCOME

m

Los Cabos offers a unique blend of NATURAL BEAUTY, glamour and history. Once home to its original native Pericú peoples, Los Cabos later hosted conquistadors, missionaries and pirates. In the mid-twentieth century, Hollywood legends like Bing Crosby, John Wayne and Desi Arnaz made Baja their escape. Now, shimmering resorts line the coast. But history is still alive in places like charming SAN JOSÉ DEL CABO with its traditional town square. About an hour from Cabo San Lucas on the Pacific, TODOS SANTOS is a “Pueblo Mágico” (Magical Town) recognized by the Mexican government for its cultural richness, offering art galleries and a population of surfer ex-pats. Los Cabos offers a little bit of something for every visitor. Bustling CABO SAN LUCAS is where the iconic arch (“El Arco”) at Land’s End makes for postcard-perfect snapshots. Here you’ll also find the world-class marina lined with restaurants and even a mall.

7

Spectacular MÉDANO BEACH is the heart of Cabo with water taxis, beach vendors, cantinas and nonstop people-watching. Between Cabo San Lucas and historic San José del Cabo is the Tourist Corridor. Here you can explore amazing beaches like Chileno Bay and Santa Maria Bay—both great for SNORKELING. Some of the world’s most luxurious resorts are located along this stretch. In San José del Cabo, picturesque architecture, courtyard restaurants and a Thursday evening Art Walk (November-May) make this laid-back town a favorite for leisurely strolling.

SUNSET CRUISE, enjoy the scenery on an off-road tour through the desert, relax with a soothing spa day or meet some locals under the water with a snorkel or DIVING tour. Or, enjoy some local flavors at a favorite taco stand or one of Cabo’s award-winning GOURMET

RESTAURANTS. You can do all this and so much more – and never have a dull moment in Cabo!

Los Cabos is home to incredible fishing with an abundance of marlin, dorado and tuna.

Sport Fishing With a well-deserved reputation for incredible fishing, Los Cabos has earned its position as the “Marlin Capital of the World.” Well before the region became today’s luxury vacation retreat, fishermen in the know headed down to Baja to fight enormous fish in the amazingly rich waters where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean. It’s no wonder that annual tournaments draw international competitors in search of prize-winning catches. An incredible variety of marine life makes Cabo a fishing destination like no other. Depending on the season and water conditions, anglers may encounter various species of marlin (striped, black and blue), dorado (mahi-mahi), tuna, wahoo, roosterfish, sea bass and others. The type of catch varies throughout the year based on water temperatures, the phase of the moon, presence of bait fish, locations of fishing boats and other factors. We work with the expert team at Pisces Sportfishing, known the world over for their outstanding captains, boats and crews.

Shopping in Cabo If you’re on the hunt for unique souvenirs and treasures to take home, Los Cabos will not disappoint. Quaint boutiques, art galleries and even modern malls offer a bit of everything. In Cabo San Lucas, much of the shopping is centered around the marina and downtown streets. Browsing by foot is easy. Bring your bargaining skills, as a little friendly negotiation is expected in many smaller shops and outdoor markets. Of course, handmade goods involve a lot of skill and labor, so take this into consideration. Persistent street and beach vendors are a common sight in Cabo San Lucas, peddling everything from trinkets to hair-braiding. Unless you are seriously interested, it’s best to dismiss them with a firm “no thank you” (no gracias). If you decide to purchase, negotiate your price and be cautious about quality. Historic San José del Cabo and Todos Santos offer charming art galleries, small specialty shops and jewelry stores. Strolling the picturesque streets as you shop is an unforgettable experience.

Traveler’s Tips Before Your Departure by Air ALL PERSONS, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Mexico are required to present a valid passport. Also, be sure to check your airline’s carry-on policies ahead of time.

Before Departure by Land or Sea U.S. citizens traveling between the U.S. and Mexico by land or sea are required to present a Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI)-compliant identification document. The rules call for U.S. citizens returning to the United States via sea or land ports of entry to have either (depending upon individual requirements) a U.S. passport; a U.S. passport card; a trusted traveler card such as FAST, or SENTRI; a valid Merchant

Mariner Document (MMD) when traveling on official maritime business; or a valid U.S. military identification card while on official orders. For the most current requirements, check the U.S. Customs website at www.cbp.gov or the WHTI website at www. getyouhome.gov to ensure you have proper identification. MINORS Unaccompanied minors traveling without both parents may require additional documentation in order to travel to Mexico. We recommend that you check with your carrier prior to your trip for current requirements to ensure you have proper documentation.

Upon Arrival in Mexico En route to Los Cabos, you will receive a MEXICO TOURIST CARD and a Mexico Customs Declaration form to fill out on the plane prior to arrival. Each visitor, including children, must be in possession of a Tourist Card. You will need this card to check in for your return flight, so keep it with your ticket. AT THE AIRPORT Upon entering Mexico, you’ll be given a baggage declaration form and asked to itemize what you’re bringing into the country. If you’re bringing gifts to friends and relatives in Mexico, you should be prepared to demonstrate to customs officials the origin and the value of the gifts. U.S. citizens entering by the land border can bring in gifts with a value of up to $50 duty-free, excluding alcohol and tobacco. Passengers entering Mexico by air or sea can bring in gifts with a value of up to $300 duty-free. Tourists are permitted to bring in personal effects duty-free. According to Mexico’s customs regulations, in addition to clothing, personal effects may include two photographic cameras or video recorders, a portable computer (laptop), three cell phones or other wireless devices, a CD player, DVD player, portable speakers, 10 DVDs, 30 CDs, 20 packs of cigarettes, 25 cigars, and three liters of alcoholic beverages. mTRAVELER’S TIPS are permitted, but as all regulations are subject to change, check the Mexican customs website at www.aduanas.sat.gob.mx for the most current information. To avoid duty fees on valuable items upon return, you may find it beneficial to register these with U.S. Customs. DO NOT bring firearms, meat, vegetables, plants, fruit, or flowers into Mexico. As you exit the airport, be cautious about in-airport timeshare sales pitches. If you have reserved transportation, your ride will be awaiting outside the airport exit, where taxis are also available.

Departing Cabo After checking out, make sure you head to the airport on time. Have proper documentation on hand, especially the MEXICO TOURIST CARD you received on the flight to Los Cabos.

54

U.S. Customs: The U.S. Customs Service currently permits most U.S. citizens returning from international travel to bring back $800 worth of merchandise, including 1 liter of alcohol, duty-free. Additional amounts may be subject to applicable duty fees. Some U.S. border states (most notably, Texas) also have imposed restrictions on liquor, wine and beer imports from Mexico. Inquire about restrictions with the liquor control office of the state through which you will return. It is illegal to bring Cuban goods into the U.S. Although some items are allowed, it is advisable not to bring back fruits, vegetables, meat or dairy products. For an up-to-date list of prohibited items, visit the U.S. Customs website (www.cbp.gov) or contact the U.S. Consulate before returning from Mexico.

Currency, Credit & Banking U.S. dollars are accepted in many places in Los Cabos. Once your dollars are exchanged for pesos, there is a fee to change them back, so exchange only what you need and note that exchange rates fluctuate daily. Banks offer the best exchange rates. If you travel out of the tourist areas, it is advisable to have pesos on hand.

TRAVELER’S TIPS

m

Newer regulations passed by the Mexican government have tightened the use of American cash dollars (USD) while in Mexico. Businesses may only accept a maximum of $100 USD CASH per transaction, certain businesses may not accept dollars for any purchases, and hotel desks are only allowed to exchange $1,500 per month into Mexican pesos. Some businesses choose to accept American dollars, others don’t. The use of credit cards, traveler’s checks (accepted in some locations) and Mexican pesos are not affected by the new regulations. Since ATMs are widely available, it’s wise to bring a small amount of U.S. dollars to exchange and then withdraw what you need in pesos. Note that most ATMs in Mexico accept only 4-digit PINs. All major credit cards are accepted in Los Cabos; Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted. American Express and Discover Card are accepted in a few locations. It is a good idea to notify your credit card company ahead of time about your travel and to ask about international fees. In restaurants and shops, ask if they accept credit. Personal U.S. checks are rarely accepted, so don’t rely on them.

Telephones The country code for Mexico is 52. The area code for Los Cabos is 624. Most pay phones accept prepaid cards, which are sold in various denominations at money-exchange booths and many shops. Most Internet cafés offer long-distance calling. Check with your cell phone provider before your trip for roaming accessibility and smartphone data charges while abroad. Refer to Useful Phone Numbers (page 57) and Frequently Asked Questions (page 58) for additional information.

Water The water supply for Los Cabos is well water. While many locals drink directly from the tap, multiple factors can lead to contamination. We suggest you drink bottled or purified water and ice.

mTRAVELER’S TIPS Weather Just south of the Tropic of Cancer, Los Cabos weather is temperate and sunny, with very little rainfall and an average temperature of 78° F. Sunny, mild winters offer cool nights. Summers are hot and arid—perfect beach weather. Summer and fall are usually the best for diving, with warm waters and good visibility.

Time Zone Info Los Cabos is located within the Mountain Time Zone, 7 hours behind GMT and 2 hours behind New York. In Mexico, Daylight Saving Time is observed from the first Sunday in April until the last Sunday in October.

56

Security & Safety Los Cabos is a very safe destination. Crime is not a big problem in the resort areas of Los Cabos, but do exercise common sense and caution. Don’t leave valuables unattended. When using an ATM, use the same attention you would at home. Absolutely avoid narcotics and firearms. If in trouble, contact the U.S. consulate. Water safety: There are no lifeguards in Los Cabos. Beach resorts use a flag system to indicate water safety: red indicates danger, yellow means caution and green signifies water conditions are safe. Use caution around the surf, especially on the rougher Pacific side, where large waves and undertows are common.

Transportation A number of transportation options are available in Los Cabos. ESSV can arrange transportation to and from the airport to your villa or resort prior to your trip. mFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions WHAT TYPE OF CLOTHING SHOULD I PACK? Packing for Cabo San Lucas should be light. It is usually nice and sunny year-round. Pack a light jacket or sweater for mornings and cool nights. Don’t forget your swimsuits!

DO I NEED TO SPEAK SPANISH IN LOS CABOS? Absolutely not. Most people in Los Cabos speak English, and many speak several other languages too. However, knowing a little Spanish is helpful. The locals really appreciate the effort.

WHAT ABOUT HOSPITALS AND DOCTORS? Cabo San Lucas has an American-style (AmeriMed) hospital and

some very competent English-speaking doctors. Hospitals may not be equipped for severe trauma cases. Always check with your doctor ahead of time if there is any doubt about traveling abroad. Before traveling, learn what your health insurance will cover overseas and consider investing in additional travel insurance. ESSV offers both trip-cancellation and medical travel insurance.

WILL MY CELLULAR PHONE WORK IN MEXICO? Many cellular providers will allow you to roam in Mexico (charges will apply). If you have a smartphone, be aware that additional data charges may apply while in Mexico. If that is the case, you may find it useful to access Wi-Fi instead of your data plan while in Mexico. Call your provider before your trip to ask if service is available. ESSV also offers convenient cell phone rentals for your use. Call your ESSV representative to reserve.

DRIVING IN BAJA – WHAT SHOULD I KNOW? ESSV offers competitively priced Avis car rentals. Your U.S. driver’s license is valid in Mexico. As U.S. auto insurance is not valid in Mexico, secure additional Mexican insurance through your rental provider. Observe local regulations. Parking is limited downtown.

WHERE CAN I CHECK MY EMAIL? Several Internet cafés are available throughout Cabo. Many of

Many additional restaurants and bars around the marina offer Wi-Fi, some for free while others charge a small fee.

ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL PROGRAMS FOR KIDS? Yes. Several resorts offer special children's activities including partor whole-day kids' clubs with special activities, supervised pool time, arts and crafts, meals, games and more! WHAT'S THE DEEP-SEA FISHING LIKE? The waters of Cabo San Lucas offer world-class fishing. Los Cabos has long been a favorite destination for its abundance of big-game species like marlin, dorado (mahi-mahi), tuna, wahoo and more. ESSV can arrange an unforgettable day of fishing for you and your group. Led by experienced crews, our fishing charters will take you to the best sites in the area.
