News from CABE’s Diversity Committee Mary Broderick Consultant, CABE
Close readers of the Journal know that CABE’s Diversity Committee, under the leadership of First Vice President Don Harris and with the assistance of CABE and NSBA Past President and Consultant Mary Broderick and former Superintendent John Ramos, has wrestled with the issue of how best to meet its charge: A. Work to ensure that there is diversity (in particular, people of color) and sensitivity to diversity in all of CABE’s work. B. Encourage boards of education, school and district leaders, as well as State Government to continue to consider the importance of diversity and
multiculturalism in public education. A critical part of this mission is to ensure that boards (and staff) are representative of their communities, especially as more of our students are of color. We have learned that helping boards do this work requires the boards to realize that: • This is difficult work. It starts with internal examination of one’s own perspectives and then working with others to understand issues more broadly. • Those involved in this work must develop a shared commitment to do this work, with the overall goal to improve the odds of ALL of our children being successful. • There is no closure on many of See DIVERSITY COMMITTEE page 4
