New London Public Schools (NLPS) serves approximately 3,400 students in grades PreK-12 across six district schools and is also on track to become Connecticut’s first and only all-magnet school district, which welcomes students from 40+ other southeastern CT communities. New London is home to a diverse student population with 85 percent students of color, 19 percent of students with disabilities, and approximately 82 percent of students eligible for free and reduced-price lunch. The district is committed to engaging the community through strong public-private partnerships and creative innovative educational design ideas to best serve its students and the community at large. Having finished our survey of demographics of Connecticut Board of Education Members, the CABE Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, under Chairman Leonard Lockhart (Windsor) has now given the “green light” to developing “affinity groups” for school board members. Such groups are developed in order to provide “psychologically safe” spaces for discussion with, and support to, others in the group. We expect these groups will provide opportunities that will strengthen our Association and help ensure input for those who might not otherwise be involved with CABE. To ensure that we reach as many Board Members as possible, the Committee believes we need to start with three groups: African-American, Latino and white. We do not, at this point, know how many school board members will join each group, but, by providing three, we believe that we can provide the opportunity to as many Board Members as possible. Each of the three groups will have similar discussions on focusing on becoming a safe group and sharing personal identities, sharing experiences as School Board Members and working on a goal to help other School Board Members. All of the groups See AFFINITY GROUPS page 6
