New Organization Representing Black Administrators to Meet
The CABE/CAPSS Convention Committee is delighted to announce that Dr. Freeman Hrabowski will be the Saturday morning speaker at this year’s CABE/CAPSS Convention! Freeman A. Hrabowski, III, has served as President of UMBC (The University of Maryland, Baltimore County) since 1992. His research and publications focus on science and math education, with special emphasis on minority participation and performance. He chaired the National Academies’ committee that produced the 2011 report, Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation: America’s Science and Technology Talent at
these positions, BLAC aims to support Black school leaders. It is hoped that the new group will strengthen support for African Americans in the same way. Such support is needed as we look to recruit more school leaders of color. The founders, Windsor Public Schools Assistant Superintendent Terrell Hill and Bristol Public Schools Director of Human Resources Samuel Galloway, are attempting to reach as many Black administrators as possible across the State. All those who hold the (092) license are invited to join BLAC. The founders hope to eventually expand membership to aspiring leaders as the organization becomes
more established.

Graduates of CABE’s Leadership Institute met recently to renew friendships and provide input to CABE on the issue of civility. These alumni serve as a sounding board for CABE. Participants discussed how civility (or the lack there of) impacts their boards, municipalities and students, and what steps they are taking to model civility and civic discourse. Among their observations: z It is important for the public to see a well performing and respectful board of education. z A lack of civil board behavior causes a loss of respect. z An effective chair is key to maintaining protocol which supports civil behavior. z Orientation for new board
members is critical to promoting civil dialogue and developing group norms. z Effective leaders contain their frustration and avoid being reactionary. z Including those with a different point of view in the conversation can promote civility. z A good social media policy (and adherence to it) can set appropriate boundaries. Commissioner Wentzell, in her remarks at the Summer Leadership Conference echoed these sentiments. “You’re the place democracy comes home. We need to refocus conversations that are essential to democracy and model listening for others”.
