Tips for First Time or 20th Time CABE/ CAPSS Convention Attendees

If you will be attending your first CABE/CAPSS Convention later this month, WELCOME! CABE and CAPSS are your Associations, and we are confident you will leave the Convention with a wealth of information to help you face the challenges of being a school board member. Here are a few hints for getting the most from the Convention. • Read Convention materials. Read the Convention registration book that can be found online at https://www. cabe.org/page.cfm?p=1145. When you arrive at the Convention be sure to read the Convention program and other handouts in your Convention bag, as well Late Breaking News which will be available at Convention registration. Additionally, if you have not already done so, make sure you download the Convention app to your mobile device. The app is full of information you need before, during and after the Convention. At its September meeting, the CABE Board of Directors unanimously selected Education Commissioner Dianna R. Wentzell as its Friend of Public Education Awardee for 2018. CABE has awarded the Friend of Public Education Award twelve times since its establishment in 1997. The award is given to those men and women who have worked to support public education in Connecticut and are not eligible for other CABE awards. The Board expressed their appreciation of her as a facilitator of difficult conversations. She is a strong supporter of student voice, both on the State Board of Education and in local districts. Besides her time in various districts as teacher, chief academic officer, and assistant superintendent, she was named Interim Commissioner in January 2015 and was appointed Commissioner in April 2015. She came into the commissionership at a time when the State Department of Education’s (SDE) relationships with many in the education community were frayed. At its “Back to School” September meeting, the CABE Board of Directors met with Commissioner Dianna Wentzell and State Board of Education members Chairman Allan Taylor, Terry Jones, Don Harris and Robert Trefry. The last two State Board members are also on the CABE Board. Commissioner Wentzell began the presentation by thanking CABE and all board of education members for their hard work “as local boards of education play a very important role

in keeping the public in public education”. She also expressed her appreciation of the “partnership the State Board of Education has with CABE”. She provided copies of the State Board’s Five-Year Comprehensive Plan 2016-21 and highlighted points of the plan and then opened up discussion with the Board.
