Wildrock, a new nature therapy center and children’s playscape in Albemarle County, that seeks to bring nature connection to families, children, and those recovering from trauma, is introducing a free Veteran Get Away program beginning on June 17th, where veterans and their families can have fun in nature regardless of the type of service or reason for discharge. The program will meet once a month over the summer. More information at: https://www.wildrock.org/veteran-get-away/ Founded by Carolyn Schuyler, Wildrock was the top prize winner of the Tom Tom Founders Festival Pitch Night in 2015. The center opened its doors to the public in May of 2017.

A 28-acre nonprofit center with a two acre playscape and indoor barn, Wildrock is located next to Patricia Ann Byrom Forest Preserve Park. The playscape includes several outdoor structures connected by a winding path. Kids and their families can heal wounded animals in the Wilderness Rescue Station, dress up as foxes and butterflies in the outdoor theater, rest in a charming hobbit house or giant twiggy nest, or make potions in the outdoor kitchen. The prize at the end of the path is a crystal clear creek where children can splash, climb rocks, and quietly watch minnows. Wildrock also has a circuit trail designed for families to experience the forest, meadows, and streams of the Blue Ridge Mountains. He added that everyone in the community appreciates the additional common ground space of a golf course that allows for more and better views of the mountains compared to neighborhoods where similar views may be blocked by other houses. Homeowners whose lots back up to the course are especially lucky as they can enjoy a relatively private, beautifully landscaped and maintained extension to their property without any additional work. They can also sit on the deck and enjoy watching others play the game, and when the course is closed, they can practice putts right on the green outside their back yard. Golf course communities offer other delights as well. “You don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy the activities on the course and the changing scenery it provides,” said Marina Ringstrom with Long & Foster Real Estate. One of her favorite golf course sights is the giant fountains that come on at night when they turn on the watering system at Glenmore’s course. “The fountains put out big spinning plumes that are

fun to watch,” she continued. Royal gold, fine fescue is one of the attractions at the Keswick Golf Club’s recently redesigned course. A decorative grass, it grows two to three feet in height with a pretty texture and golden color and is used to break up areas between holes, said Golf Pro Eric McGraw adding that people enjoy watching its peaceful and beautiful wave. The Keswick Club is also a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, which means it “must demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas including: Environmental Planning, Wildlife & Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation, and Water Quality

Keswick is one of 36 clubs in Virginia to meet Audubon’s high standards and one of two in our area, the other being UVA’s Birdwood Golf Club. Peter McDonough, Keswick’s General Manager, explained that he joined the program back in 2002 “because it was the right thing to do.” He believes “the responsibility falls on people that manage the land,” and that if you work with Mother Nature she provides. One of the regular sites at Keswick Club is a bald eagle that golfers, visitors and home owners see often, Matheson said. Perhaps eagle sightings are Mother Nature’s way of signaling approval of the club’s environmental stewardship.

Golf Course Lots Bring a Premium While there are many reasons to live in a home right on the golf course, does that translate into a higher price on your home? “There is definitely a premium on golf course lots because there is no one behind you and you don’t have the maintenance,” Guthrie said. He did offer the advice that non-golfers should take a golfing friend with them when shopping for a home on the course.

The golfers will recognize areas most likely to attract errant balls that could damage a home’s siding. He also cautioned that if you like quiet, you would be advised not to buy near a tee box where “laughing and talking are pretty much the norm.” Golfers add an extra measure of demand for housing at Wintergreen that helps maintain property values there explained Bo Newell with Mountain Area Realty in Nellysford. He added that buyers should expect to pay more for a lot right on the course especially if it also comes with one of Wintergreen’s spectacular views. How much more you pay depends on the situation. Bishop believes you should expect to pay twice as much for a golf course lot as you would for one elsewhere in Spring Creek. At Glenmore, Ringstrom suggests that a golf course location could add as much as $100,000 to a lot’s assessed value.

A town where baseball broadcasts preempt talk shows, and where a young priest confesses wryly from the pulpit that his dying words, never mind profundity, might be “Go Hoos!” Speaking of those Hoos, or Wahoos, or Cavs, or Cavaliers—we have many names for what we love—University of Virginia men play baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and wrestling. The women play basketball, cross-country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. Attendance-wise, of course, football is king of them all. Back in the mid-Seventies, as Charlottesville native Karen Gillaspie remembers, “there were hardly enough fans to fill one complete section and the only team we could beat back then was VPI—currently referred to as VA Tech! Now there are many more fans in attendance and games are great fun.” Virginia’s annual game with North Carolina dates back to 1892, and is known as the South’s Oldest Rivalry. But it’s the Virginia Tech Hokies, whom the Cavs first faced in 1895 and have played annually since 1970, that local fans are most eager to beat. The hated Hokies had their way 52-10 in 2016, and lead the series 56–37–5. The Cavs can take revenge at home on November 24. They open their 2017-18 season here on September 2 against William and Mary. Two-time National Coach of the Year, Tony Bennett came to UVA from Washington State in 2009 and revitalized the basketball program with his “five pillars”—humility, passion, unity, servanthood, and thankfulness. Bennett’s teams are known for their strong defense. UVA’s women’s basketball games are just as exciting, Gillaspie says, “and the ticket prices are cheaper, which makes it an affordable option

for families with children to attend— thus exposing the children to sports at a young age.” While the Cavs keep the whole town talking, Charlottesvillians love recreational sports, as well, and have numerous options for playing and socializing. The Jefferson Swim League sponsors 18 swim teams for children. The Cavalier Wrestling Club operates a Scholastic Program for kids grades K-12, and a USA Wrestling Regional Olympic Training Center (RTC), bringing children together with UVA and Olympic-level athletes for wrestling tips and life lessons.

The Seminole Lacrosse League is dedicated to giving local kids the chance to play lacrosse at the high school level. The league is proud of its high coach to player ratio, which allows every participant to receive individual attention. Seminole League Clinics educate and prepare players at all skill levels to play in the Seminole League. The Albemarle Girls’ Field Hockey and Lacrosse League was founded in 1981 by Linda Perriello and Linda Southworth for middle school girls.


Teaming up with the parents of some of the players, the two women also helped to start varsity programs at city and county high schools. Nowadays the League offers lacrosse for girls in grades 1-8.

Tailgating at the Foxfield Races in Albemarle County is practically a rite of passage for UVA students each spring and fall. First held in 1978 on a former horse farm belonging to well-known horseman, Grover Vandevender, the steeplechase races on the last Saturday in April attract a lively crowd of as many as 25,000 people, many in traditional aristocratic Southern dress, including seersucker suits and bowties for the guys, and pastel colors for both sexes. The fall event, on the last Sunday in September, is geared towards families, with kids activities and a Jack Russell Terrier race. Typical attendance is 3,000-4,000. Both events benefit local charities. Foxfield’s 2017 Fall Family Day is Sunday, September 24. This year’s beneficiary is International Neighbors Charlottesville. Charlottesville Sports and Social Club is the brainchild of Chad Day, who moved here from Northern Virginia is 2006. Like many a newcomer, Day had a hard time meeting people at first. Like the professional problem-solver (computer programmer) he is, he decided to found a sports league.
