Ah, Paso Robles. Dubbed by some as the “new Napa,” Paso has exploded onto the wine scene in recent years. But despite its growing fame, Paso has managed to keep its rural cowboy charm and laid-back California vibe. Here are three Paso winers - and a few others from across the Central Coast, too - that have caught our eye.

Allegretto is a musical term describing a cheerful tempo of 112 to 120 beats per minute, and for Ayres, there is music in every aspect of the resort — including the building itself.

“I look at this as sacred geometry infused through the music of the architecture,” he said. Exploration of the property is encouraged, so feel free to roam and discover the exquisite artwork and antiques (my favorite: the massive slice of Sequoia which is thousands of years old). Head out to the pool or the Abbey, or take a meditative walk in the sonic labyrinth and the 20-acre vineyards. There’s also a top-notch spa, and a restaurant, Cello, featuring Northern Italian cuisine.

Allegretto is conveniently located near downtown Paso just off CA-46, but is masterfully crafted to feel miles away from the rest of the world. There is so much to do and experience at Allegretto, it’s easy to fill your days immersed in its many offerings — and the wines are a perfect complement to it all. Allegretto is the passion project of Doug Ayres, of the Ayres hotel family. It has become a soulful extension

The 171 rooms surround a 12,000 sq. ft. piazza, which invites guests to hang with friends around the fountain, fire pits, and cozy nooks. Book a Prelude Terrazza room that overlooks the piazza, and plan to watch the sun set from your private patio — with a bottle of wine or two, of course. Oh yes, the wine! Like everything else at Allegretto, it is crafted with intention and harmony. “My philosophy of wine here is that it’s a qualitative component of love and balance, infused with the characteristics of all the body of the wine,” said Ayres. Our favorite was the Tannat. It is bold, with flavors of dark cherries and cinnamon, and an anise finish. The grapes for all Allegretto’s wines are sourced not only from the onsite vineyard, but also from Willow

Sculpterra

Art and wine: it’s the classic pairing. They both have the power to provoke contemplation, to ignite excitement. Paso’s Sculpterra checks those boxes emphatically, with artfully crafted wines, a passionate staff, and dedicated owners. It doesn’t hurt that they also happen to have an incredible sculpture collection.

Interesting and beautiful artwork abounds at Allegretto, includings in the tasting room (above). Book a room with a terrazza (below) and watch the sun set over the piazza.

Scattered amongst the gorgeous landscaping, you’ll find massive flying fish, dragonflies, jaguars, mammoths, eagles, and more. The level of detail and artistry is incredible — the wrought-iron gates, the light fixtures, the door handles, the embellishments in the tasting room’s exposed beams. The longer you look, the more you’ll discover. Be sure to check out one of the newest installations — a wall detailing the winemaking history of the Paso Robles region — while enjoying the regular live music acts that grace their outdoor stage. But hey, we all know why you’re really here: the wine. The Frankel family’s sprawling estate includes a bit of everything, like Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Merlot, Primitivo, Mouvedre, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, and Pinot Noir. Winemaker Paul Frankel literally grew up amongst the grapes, roaming the vineyards with his dad, Sculpterra founder Dr. Warren Frankel. When Paul joined the family business, he realized there was an area in the vineyards where the cool air settled at night, creating a microclimate that could

support the Pinot Noir grape. “Nobody knows this land better than Paul,” Dale Morris, the Frankels’ neighbor who also works in the tasting room (and has her own wines, Jade Moon). “He is so invested in this place!” The result of this family affair? Sublime. The 2016 Pinot Noir offers

flavors of black tea leaves, cherry, clove, and mint, lingering on the finish. Our favorite was the ’15 Cab dubbed Bentley Ironworks, so named in honor of Sculpterra’s master blacksmith/sculptor Bob Bentley. Well structured with an oaky nose, it is enticingly balanced, with a tart berry taste and velvety oak-infused tannins. We also got a taste of the ’14, which was even more refined

and blissful. “This is what a Paso Cab should be,” said tasting room assistant manager, Darren Brown. (Side note for newbies: Don’t be afraid to reveal your novice. Darren, like all the Sculpterra gang, is a super patient and enthusiastic educator.)

Another favorite: The Héroe. The hard-working vineyard and production team are the inspiration behind Héroe. The faces of these “heroes” of the land grace the bottles of this offshoot of Sculpterra, and proceeds help operate free medical clinics in Baja California through The Flying Samaritans.

Calcareous Vineyard

Perched on top of a hill up the winding Peachy Canyon Road lies a winery with some of the most stunning views to be had in the region: Calcareous Vineyard. From its tasting room, you can see 60 miles across the Salinas Valley. The views are inspiring, but it was the soil that originally inspired the father-daughter team of Lloyd Messer and Dana Brown to plant roots here. The limestone plateau is what gave the winery its name, and what prompted Lloyd and Dana to leave their native Iowa to create wines that “let the soil speak.” With its many artful details, you’ll want to linger in Sculpterra’s tasting room.

walking the land. He passed away in 2006, the first year of production. Calcareous honors him in numerous ways; look for the preserved set of his boots outside the tasting room, and the red blends bearing his name.

We loved the 2018 Vin Gris Cuvée, with its watermelon-honeydew nose and clean, cherry peach favor. With our long, hot summers that often overlap into fall, this super refreshing wine is a happy, easy-drinking wine. The ’17 Tres Violet was another winner, with its blend of 36 percent Grenache, 34 percent Mourvedre and 30 percent Syrah. Rich with supple tannins, this Rhone blend has intense flavors of cherry and chocolate.

Herzog Wine Cellars

Oxnard Based in Oxnard, Herzog Wine Cellars sources grapes from a huge swath of California. “Our vineyards stretch from Napa, to Lake County, to the Central Coast because we want to grow the right grapes in the right places so that they will express themselves perfectly,” said Herzog’s David Whittemore. Herzog now creates more than 50 different wines a year. New to the Herzog lineup this year are two sparkling wines (one red, one white). The Herzog family has been producing kosher wines in California since 1985, but the family traces its wine-making roots to Europe in 1775. Their tasting room offers flights of six to eight wines, spacious lounges (indoor and outdoor), and the option of taking a self-guided tour of their 77,000 sq. ft. facility. Old Creek Ranch Winery

Ventura A historic property that lies just inside the boundaries of the Ojai Valley, Old Creek Ranch Winery is enjoying a new life thanks to the Holguin family and winemaker Jeremy Leffert (also of Tooth & Nail). They’ve added a plethora of delectable outdoor seating areas, and “Much of the furniture is constructed from reclaimed wood from an old barn that was on the property,” said Jane Holguin. They’ve also begun replanting vineyards of Pinot Gris, Viognier, Albariño, Sauvignon Blanc, with plans for Petite Sirah, Grenache, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, and Syrah. For now, they source grapes from locations like Edna Valley, Los

Jamie Slone Winery

Santa Barbara Jamie Slone is a Renaissance man. He’s run radio stations, worked in real estate, raced cars in Sonoma, and now, owns Jamie Slone Winery with his wife, Kym. This “micro boutique” winery in the Historic El Paseo only makes about 50 to 100 cases of each varietal with winemaker in Steve Clifton (of Brewer-Clifton Winery). “Our wine is not esoteric,” Jamie said. “It’s representative of Kym and myself.” The word has gotten out about this winery — in July, they were named “Best Winery” and “Best Tasting

Grassini Family Vineyards

Santa Barbara There’s a reason Grassini Family Vineyards includes the word “family” in their name. Founders Larry and Sharon Grassini, with support from their four daughters, operate their Santa Ynez vineyard. But it wasn’t until vineyard experts informed them that their 104-acre parcel had huge potential to grow Bordeaux varietals that they decided to plant grapes. Today, their Historic El Paseo tasting rooms spotlight their Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, among others. They’ve won a slew of awards — most recently (2018) Best Urban Tasting Room, Best Winery, and Best Tasting Room by the Santa Barbara News-Press and Santa Barbara Independent. They also operate sustainably: the vineyard and winery on solar power, the winery is built from reclaimed wood, and uses reclaimed water to irrigate their landscaping. Santa Barbara A trip to France in the mid ‘70s changed the course of Jim Clendenen’s life. Rather than continue on his path to becoming an attorney, he decided to pursue winemaking. Cebada Wine

Santa Barbara Sandra Newman wears lots of hats: owner of Cebada Wine and Forbidden Fruit Orchards, horticulturist, and winemaker. Her 100-acre farm came first in 2002, followed four years later by seven and a half acres of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. A horticulturist with two degrees in plant science, Newman said, “My style is old-world style winemaking — very much French style.” Her wines are gaining momentum; the French Laundry just purchased a case of her Sparkling Rosé, and her wines are being featured in tastings at both Belmond El Encanto and the Ritz Carlton Bacara. She’ll also be featured in a forthcoming book about female winemakers in Santa Barbara County. Brick Barn Wine Estate

Buellton Brick Barn’s 35-acre estate is situated on a pocket of land that benefits from its proximity to the ocean (just

10 miles away) and the long, sunny days of the Central Coast. Their name comes from an early 1970s brick horse barn on the property, which now serves as the tasting room. Opening their doors seven years ago, Brick Barn is helmed by Norman and Kathleen Williams and winemaker Rob DaFoe. Brick Barn’s tasting room features indoor seating as well as sprawling outdoor patios, with fireplaces and plenty of space to take in the expansive views. While there, be sure to check out the Albariño, which has won awards in Sonoma County and San Francisco. Omar and Andrea use vibrantly rich, bold color in their work. Omar D'León is a Nicaraguan painter and poet whose work is collected in national institutions of fine art across the Americas. D'León studied nine years at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in Nicaragua under its director Rodrigo Peñalba. He moved to Camarillo a quarter of a century ago. Omar D'Leon and Andrea Yomtob artists use painting technique that incorporates oil and wax on canvas. Each layer of paint is scratched through to reveal the color beneath, creating a style very reminiscent of Impressionism. The technique was developed by Omar d’ León and later taught to his pupil, Andrea Yomtob. Omar and Andrea have been painting together at Omar's studio in Camarillo for almost 25 years. Fall 2019

For many travelers, CA-Highway 126 serves as little more than a conduit between U.S. Route 101 on the coast, and Interstate 5 in Los Angeles County. But do yourself a favor: next time you’re on the 126, stop and do a little exploring. Collectively known as the Heritage Valley, the communities of Santa Paula, Fillmore, and Piru will surprise you with the number of activities, events, museums, restaurants, and culture they offer. If it’s spooky fall fun you seek, look no further — the Heritage Valley has you covered with its Ghostwalk and the Zombie Hunter Train. Now in its 25th year, the family-friendly Ghostwalk spotlights some of the area’s creepiest bits of folklore. Adult audiences, meanwhile, can hop on a historic train car at the Fillmore & Western Railway to battle zombies — with a paintball gun in one hand and a drink in the other. • Defend your train from zombies!

Halloween: The night when the dead come back to life. Are you ready for the zombie apocalypse? Hone your survival skills on Fillmore’s Zombie Hunter Train, and you’ll be prepared when grassy graves break open and bony hands pop through!

As the season of trick-or-treat draws near, Ghostwalk 2019 provides an immersive theatrical experience sure to delight the whole family. While you stroll, the phantoms, specters, and spooks of all sorts that lived (or might have lived) in the Santa Clara River Valley take corporeal form to share their tales. There’s no shortage of creatively batty stories, all inspired by real — or really-well imagined — events. This year, your ghoulish guide will take you deep into the confines of a circa-1920s circus, where tiger trainer Mabel Stark leads you around to each doomed act.

If you choose to accept this mission, you’ll be carted onto one of Fillmore & Western Railway’s historic trains and conveyed down a rural railway. Once you reach ground zero, you’ll battle with the army of the undead! But don’t worry. You’ll be surrounded by other fighters, and you’ll all be armed with Stryker Paintball & Airsoft zombie-destroying weapons. Each fighter has up to 250 paintballs, which is a lot considering these boogeymen haven’t got anything to shoot back with! Zombies will roam the fields as you and your teammates paint them up — it’s practically target practice. Children as young as 8 years old are recruited to the front lines against the zombies. Several hundred people, including many families, sign up for the hour-long event at the start of every spooky season, hosts say. They claim no railroad employees have fallen to the dread zombie disease, but past guests insist they’ve seen a decaying corpse shuffling through the train’s aisles. Zombie hunters have reported that “the zombie actors were great and would even fall to the ground and play dead.” Tickets are known to sell out, so don’t hesitate if you want a chance to go on this thrilling train ride! You can also simply watch the slaughter if you prefer. Whether you want to blast zombies, or sit back and enjoy some adult beverages and watch the ensuing slaughter, you’re sure to have a fun time! Starting Oct. 5 and continuing every weekend through Oct. 27, you’ll have the opportunity to prove yourself. Departure times are at 5:30, 7:30 and 8:30 pm. Rumor has it, the late rides make for a good scare. Will you join in the fight? Prices are $55 for Zombie Hunters and $25 for spectator passengers.

One Ghostwalk performer said that the ghoulish production can be a “rollerghoster.” But, seriously, don’t worry too much: Since the tour began 25 years ago, the only bone that past patrons have complained of breaking has been their funny bone. Presented by the Santa Paula Theater Center, the production is quite an undertaking, and each year has brought new poltergeists to the stage. The current buzz is that magicians, clowns, and even trained animals have been added to the long list of undead entertainers. But whichever phantasm haunts the tent, remember that the stories are all dead-icated to you, dear guest. This year’s walk will be hosted in the old Fumigation Building, but don’t hold your breath waiting in line to buy tickets. Patrons are encouraged to reserve in advance. Performances take place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings from Oct. 11 to 27. The 1-hour tour starts every 30 minutes beginning at 6 pm, with the last one at 9 pm. Cost is $15 for adults and $10 for children younger than 12. While rumors abound that some ghosts are former patrons of the walk, you can trust that your tour won’t come to a dead end. All captive audience members inevitably make their way to their final resting place. After all, fortune favors the grave.

Me? I think about the abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables grown on the farms of California’s Central Coast and valleys.

Granita, Watermelon Cubes, and Pistachios

Here are a few of my recipes that feature some of our region’s best fare. They’re sure to be the talk of your holiday potluck!

The key to good granita is to use the freshest of ingredients. In this recipe, the combination of fresh ginger, fresh jalapeño, and freshsqueezed lime juice explodes on your palate. The flavor of the watermelon is a bonus. The bold flavors in this granita linger a little too long on the palate to use it as a palate cleanser between courses, as is sometimes done. It does, however, make for a beautiful dessert! Visit the Santa Barbara Pistachio Company for farm-fresh pistachios. They are located at 3380 Highway 33, Ventucopa. See them also at the Ojai and Santa Barbara Certified Farmers’ Markets. Ingredients:

Granita is a frozen dessert made from sugar, water, and assorted flavors. That’s all there is to it.

Savory Pumpkin Soup

1 cup sugar 3 1/2 cups water 2 tablespoons fresh ginger (peeled and chopped fine)

1 jalapeño (seeds removed, chopped fine) I got the herbs and spices just right, and before you could say “Bob’s your uncle,” my wife and I were enjoying this savory soup. It is the perfect fall/winter belly-warmer-upper. Ingredients: 4 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 white or yellow onion (chopped) 2 cloves garlic (peeled and minced) 1 teaspoon ground turmeric 1 teaspoon ground ginger 1 /2 teaspoon curry powder 1 /2 teaspoon rubbed sage 1 tablespoon fresh parsley (chopped) 8 cups fresh pumpkin (peeled, seeded, and cut into cubes)

I make a similar soup with butternut squash. So, one day last year I thought maybe I could substitute fresh pumpkin for the squash and have an entirely new soup recipe. I experimented until 26

2 cups vegetable broth 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1 /2 cup heavy cream (plus extra for garnish) 1 /2 teaspoon salt 1 /2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper

Zest of 1 lime (chopped) 3 /4 cup fresh lime juice 4 cups watermelon (1-inch cubes) 4 teaspoons pistachio nuts (shelled, roasted, and chopped)

2 tablespoons fresh mint (chopped coarsely) Directions: Combine the sugar, water, ginger, and jalapeño in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Simmer 5 minutes, remove from the heat. Cool then strain into a bowl. Stir in the lime zest and juice. Pour into a flat container that will hold the mixture 1 inch high and fit into your freezer. Freeze for 2 hours, stirring every 30 minutes to form a slush. Place watermelon cubes in a large bowl and toss with the mint. To serve, put a half-cup of granita in a glass, add a cup of the watermelon, sprinkle with a teaspoon of pistachios and top with a small spoonful of granita. Garnish with a small sprig of mint and serve immediately. Directions: In a large soup pot, melt the butter over mediumhigh heat. Add the onion and cook for 5 minutes, or until translucent. Add the garlic, turmeric, ginger, curry, and parsley. Cook, stirring, for 1 minute more. Add the pumpkin and vegetable broth. Reduce heat to simmer, cover, and cook for 30 minutes, or until the pumpkin has softened completely. Transfer the soup (you may need to do this in batches) to a blender and process until smooth. Return the soup to the pot and add the lime juice, cream, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine and cook until warmed through. To serve, ladle into bowls and drizzle cream on top. I like to serve this with a fresh loaf of crusty rustic bread. Tip: This recipe makes enough soup for four adults. It can easily be doubled if you need more! california101guide.com

Mark Churchill: Caveman Chemistry By Amelia Fleetwood Mark Churchill has been making pottery for more than 25 years. Inspired by traditional Japanese and Korean craftsmanship, his collections feature handmade dinnerware, mugs, vessels, and sculptures. “I make everything, but creating really practical pieces is important because my life is very much based on function,” Mark said. “Those are the things that matter.” Drawn to pieces that have a quiet, uncomplicated presence, Mark has a unique style that mixes a MidCentury/Scandinavian feel with more traditional Asian influences. Each of his firings is completely unique; the subtle differences in every piece are regarded not as imperfections, but proof of life. Mark strives to create work that is soulful. He uses materials for clay and glazes that echo the natural

After taking to ceramics in high school, Mark continued to study with local Ojai master ceramist, Frank Massarella. “My mother is an artist and everyone in my family makes things with their hands, so I tested out of school and left to apprentice Frank.” For Mark, being part of a pottery lineage is important; he’s had the same apprentice for the last five years, Kiren Sahgal. Mark added, “My theory is that I will certainly die with a minimum of 5,000 things left unmade. That’s why we have apprentices: Because one, hopefully they will be better than

At this point, my brain chemistry is such that if I don’t sit down and throw, it’s very easy to tell that something is off with me.” Part of the original ceramic process is to access materials from the natural world. low temperature. Adding elements such as ash and sand, which have a higher melting temperature, is how the development of high-fired stoneware and porcelain originated. Mark elaborated, “Back in time, someone probably got a kiln too hot and the ash, which was a byproduct of a wood they were using, settled on the pots and melted into a glaze. They were probably like ‘OH MY GOD,’ and from there it’s just caveman chemistry. It’s all very basic, really. The ash comes from our trees at the ranch and is often a result of my family sitting around a fire pit, talking.” Most of Mark’s pieces survived the 2017 Thomas Fire, inspiring him to go forward making only pieces that have a timeless quality, as this type of artwork stays put once it’s fired. Mark added, “Aside from bronze sculptures, high fired ceramics, particularly porcelain, are the things that would withstand the world ending!

Because of this, I am really cautious and extra hard on myself as to what goes out into the world.” Mark also spends time teaching ceramics at The Clay School in Ojai, finding it inspiring watching his students take up this art form for the first time. “When I was young, pottery was not cool. I would have had a very different life growing up nowadays, where pottery is cool and marijuana is legal,” he joked. These days, Mark’s work is found at Ojai’s highly curated lifestyle store, In the Field, as well as in other stores worldwide that share his aesthetic and quest for elevated, thoughtful design. scented perfume? Maybe it’s In Ventura, Sylvia Michaels, looking for her the Bella gentleman caller at the Bella Maggiore Inn … Maggiore Inn has been operating since 1926 with a full staff and a few extras. Guests note their paranormal encounters in a thick book in the inn’s front parlor.

Just how many poltergeists roam the Bella Maggiore’s halls is a mystery. It’s rumored that the ghosts were victims of an organized crime unit that purportedly ran its business from the inn. Within the dark past of the now-pleasant inn are the deaths of previous guests: Mark, who died of a drug overdose, and Elizabeth, a small child who was murdered on the first floor, to name a few. But the most frequent midnight visitor is Sylvia Michaels. Many who visit the Bella Maggiore have an encounter with what they can only describe as her specter. Around 1947, she was murdered — or died by suicide — in Room 17 where she lived for a period. Some say she was a writer, but most believe she was a lady of the night who rendezvoused with her clients at the inn. Perhaps the fact that she only knocks on a door if the room is occupied by a man is evidence of the latter. She also has a tendency to prank men by moving their wallets, though both men and women report smelling 40

Be sure not to cheat at cards at the Glen Tavern Inn. You may just end up roommates with the specter in Room 307.

Constructed in 1911, the Glen Tavern Inn has a long and spirited history. The hotel’s motto, “Where the Past Comes to Life,” is dead-on, as ghosts allegedly haunt the rooms to this day. In fact, the hotel is so renowned for its uninvited guests that it was featured on an episode of Ghost Adventures in 2013 and “The Dead Files” in 2014.

Rumored to have been a speakeasy during prohibition, the Glen Tavern was no stranger to debauchery. Dark happenings beyond the standard gambling and drinking took place within its walls. Did silent film actor Rudolph Valentino return to the Historic Santa Maria Inn after his death?

This Historic Santa Maria Inn isn’t just a popular place for politicians and celebrities; according to local lore, it’s a favorite place for poltergeists.

Built in 1917, word got out about the inn’s quality accommodations, and famous folks journeying along El Camino Real regularly stopped in. Those who found refuge at the Santa Maria reportedly include President Herbert Hoover, Charlie Chaplin, Cary Grant, Marilyn Monroe, Bob Hope, William Randolph Hearst, and Rudolph Valentino among others. california101guide.com

Rumor has it that Valentino — a heartthrob actor who starred in several well-known silent films — checked back in to the hotel after his untimely death at the age of 31. But he was missing one vital thing: his body! His room door, marked with a star and his name, is said to be knocked on at all hours of the day or night, though when guests open the door, there’s no one behind it. There have even been accounts of clientele finding the Latin lover sprawled out on the room’s bed. Another room, said to be haunted by a sea captain and his mistress, may not have the notoriety of Valentino, but that’s compensated by ghostly pranks such as cold spots, slamming doors, strobing lights, and a ghoulish surprise at the foot of the bed. But these occurrences aren’t restricted to the rooms; professionals found evidence of supernatural activity in the Santa Maria’s gardens and the cellar. There’s even mysterious piano music that serenades the patrons. But guests can rest assured: These ghosts are known to be friendly, if a bit mischievous.  Paso Robles Inn Paso Robles There’s unfinished business at the Paso Robles Inn.

Stormy evenings make ghosts nervous — especially J.H. Emsley. Rumor has it he likes to make calls to the front desk when the skies turn angry over the Paso Robles Inn.

A brick hotel was originally built here in 1890 by architect Stanford White, who also designed Madison

Square Garden and the Boston Public Library. The Paso Robles Inn was supposed to be everlasting. But, in 1940, careless guests started a fire that resulted in its destruction. J.H. Emsley, the night clerk, discovered the blaze and sounded the alarm. Everyone escaped alive, except him. He reportedly died of a heart attack before learning that all the guests had made it to safety. In 1945, some of the original bricks were used to rebuild the hotel, including the notorious Room 1007. Shortly thereafter, the phantom phone calls from that room began. The phone would ring and the hotel attendant would pick it up only to hear nothing on the other end. Perplexed, staff at the Paso Robles Inn sought the aid of the phone company, who reported no mechanical problems. The calls are usually made on stormy evenings. Once, instead of calling the front desk, the room dialed 911; even spookier, the call was placed at just about the same time the distress call was made in the 1940 fire. A few hotel employees have conjectured that Emsley’s spirit, infused into the walls of the new wing, continues to strive to protect the hotel guests to this day. ancho San Marcos, Santa Barbara • Rancho is a short but beautiful drive from Santa Barbara and is only 15 minutes from wine country. As we pulled up to the clubhouse we were greeted by friendly staff, and within minutes I was hitting complimentary balls on the driving range. After a quick warm-up, Jason and I teed off. Despite playing during peak time the pace was great, and because of the rural setting it felt like we were miles away from civilization — a huge perk for those golfers looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of life.

As we worked our way through the course, we crossed paths with a pack of wild turkeys and all kinds of other wildlife. As for the course, at 6,939 yards, I was left with some long and challenging second shots, but Jason’s long and accurate drives kept him in position for a low score. Throughout the day, the course conditions remained stellar, and of the three courses it was clear that Rancho San Marcos benefitted the most from the recent rainy season. The fairways were nice and it paid to stay within their parameters, as I quickly discovered. The greens were challenging but true and fast; if I had one “gripe,” it was that they were hard. More than one of my approach shots landed on the green but ended up sliding off the backside; but as the round went on both Jason and I adjusted.

Regarding the round, Jason said, “Rancho San Marcos has always been a fun course and I’m excited to play that track every chance I get. Being that it is set back into the Santa Ynez Mountains, it makes for a peaceful day, and there is something spiritual about the surroundings.” When considering the course, pace of play, green fees, staff, and just the overall experience in general, we gave Rancho San Marcos two thumbs up. a Purisima, Lompoc • The second course on our list was La Purisima. Much like Rancho San Marcos, La Purisima is a short 30-mile drive from Santa Barbara. Once you get to the course, the views are breathtaking and the course is in terrific shape.

Despite the warnings of afternoon winds, Jason and I had a midday tee time, and the first tee box was open and awaiting our arrival. After teeing off we did not catch the group ahead of us for the better part of an hour, and even then the pace of play was excellent.

La Purisima

Photos by Aidan Bradley As a first-time golfer at La Purisima I wasn’t too sure what to expect, other than it had a reputation as one of the best courses on the Central Coast — and I quickly discovered why. The tree-lined fairways and strategically placed bunkers underscored the importance of being accurate off the tee, and I found myself laying up more than I normally would. Even for Jason, who has played the course for years, the layout was a challenge and he’d have to pause to think about a number of his shots throughout the day.

“La Purisima is a tough course, but if I can get into a groove and I’m smart off the tee, I tend to score pretty well. The best part of this course is that it tests all aspects of your game which is one of the reasons I like it so much. If you get careless you’ll rack up strokes in a hurry,” he said. A lot was made of the afternoon winds and while we did get some, it wasn’t enough to make a big difference on our round. After a solid first nine, my back nine got a little rocky; the challenging 12th hole — a par-5 — increased my overall score by nine strokes. I was able to right the ship but the damage was done. After having a blast on the course, we finished with a cold beverage in the clubhouse, where the staff was friendly and welcoming. Our La Purisima outing was stellar, and it was way more than I expected leading up to the round. I’ll definitely be returning in the near future for another crack at No. 12. he River Course at Alisal, Solvang • At 6,830 yards, the par-72 Alisal course was the one I knew the least about heading into this golf adventure. The course was described to me as challenging but forgiving, and I think that was a perfect description of my overall experience. The River Course is located in Solvang so it is easy to get to and is in close proximity to many great restaurants and wineries. Our day at the River Course started with an early tee time and we were treated to a brisk, clear day with no trace of wind whatsoever. There were a number of groups that got out ahead of us but the pace of play was ideal and we rarely had to wait at any point during our round.

I found the fairways manageable and it was clear The River Course rewards players who hit the ball long and straight. Jason managed to go under par for the front nine — mostly due to great tee shots which left him with relatively simple approach shots. For a less accomplished golfer like me, when I stayed in the fairway I saw success but if I hit wide, my second shots were pretty challenging. Jason and I both putted well at The River Course because the greens were in magnificent condition and the ball rolled true throughout the day. “I’d say the greens here were the best of the three courses we played. I was striking the ball pretty well, but my putting was spot-on. It’s been a few years since I had a chance to go under par for the day but I nearly did it today,” said Jason. With the condition of the course, the stunning views of the Santa Ynez Valley and the overall experience of our round, we also gave The River Course two big thumbs up. After our round we enjoyed lunch at the River Grill, which proved to be an excellent choice. The food was stellar and the atmosphere was relaxing — just what we needed after a round of golf. The new signature event will take place in the six Santa Ynez Valley wine country towns of Los Alamos, Santa Ynez, Los Olivos, Solvang, Ballard, and Buellton, with immersive experiences meant to serve as an introductory course to the edible and imbibe-able bounty of the burgeoning food, wine and beer destination. Take in the “Pink Moment” indoors or out in the expansive backyard, which has a small vineyard, plenty of intimate seating areas, a music stage, and lawn games like giant Jenga and bocce ball. Live music will be provided by the Danny McGaw Band throughout the afternoon. The Ojai Valley has long been known as an inspiring place for artists of all genres to settle and work. It’s not surprising that with the artists comes a multitude of diverse gallery styles. In Ojai you’ll find galleries hosting collectives, monthly shows, and even artistowned galleries. Each gives local and out-of-town artists a platform to show their work and interact with the community at large.

1. Porch Gallery

310 E. Matilija Avenue The curators and owners of the Porch Gallery, Lisa Casoni and Heather Stobo, are L.A. transplants who came to Ojai — like so many others — to find a more balanced lifestyle. Ojai resonated with the pair; they were especially attracted by the town’s commitment to the environment, the arts, and the community. Basic Premise is the brain child of Ojai locals Matt Henriksen and Ted Nava. Their goal is to keep young artists showing locally by giving them a place to call home. Matt explains: “Selling art is the best way to support the artists, so even though we are moving away from a more established type of environment, we give the younger generation an exceptional opportunity to express themselves and also maintain a career, without having to look further afield.” Focusing on installations and residencies, Matt and Ted draw on their deep Ojai roots to make this gallery an exciting and vibrant place to experience bold and strong art. Brittany Davis began her eponymous, self-described “classical fine art gallery with a twist” in the spring of 2019. She cites the need for a change of pace, after a stint running several popular galleries in Los Angeles. Her motto: “Fall in love with art.” Brittany’s Ojai Gallery showcases monthly, rotating solo shows as well as group-curated exhibitions by artists from all over the world, including Ojai. 4. OVA Arts

238 E. Ojai Avenue “We try to keep it local,” explains OVA Arts gallery co-owner Julie Wellings. She began the OVA Arts collective with six fellow artists in 2013 as a way to support local artists from neighboring Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Their collective now includes about 45 artists who participate regularly in the gallery space. Look out for their live music celebrations every third Friday of the month, when they feature a new artist as part of the downtown area’s monthly Third Friday events. OVA also uses their space for special events as well as classes. They feature an eclectic mixture of wall art, pedestal art, and often include jewelry in their exhibitions. Robin Nahan, owner of Firestick Pottery, takes pride in the fact that her studio is the primary ceramic studio in the city of Ojai, and where many of the town’s master potters and ceramic artists come to do their firing. “It all revolves around my OVA Arts is a collective featuring works by local artists, high-fire studio, including jewelry maker Patty McFall. our seven kilns, and the 50 different glazes that we offer,” Robin explains. Firestick Studio isn’t just for professionals; it’s also for members and visitors alike. Every day of the week, workshops are offered for anyone to drop in. canvas and paper takes simplicity seriously. It is a small museum in a gallery setting. The art is not for sale, there are no openings or fanfare, just new art every three months. Located in a small, California-style bungalow with a pared-down style, canvas and paper is an appealingly neutral space in which the art is easy to absorb. This peaceful and calm gallery was founded by owner and longtime art collector, Neil Kreitman. His deep love of art prompted him to create this gift to Ojai. canvas and paper shows paintings and drawings from Neil’s personal collection of modern 20th century and earlier art, in both thematic and single artist exhibits. Dan Schultz opened the doors to his exclusive, one-man gallery and work space in 2011, after a lengthy, statewide search for the perfect place to call his own. “My wife and I picked Ojai,” Dan shares. “It is such an incredible place to paint because of the natural landscapes.” Dan focuses on impressionistic realism. “I love painting the Ojai Meadows Preserve, as well as the orchards on the East End of town.” Dan’s award-winning paintings of the bucolic countryside sum up the feeling of Ojai. Originally from Santa Fe, New Mexico, Peggie Williamson moved to Ojai 11 years ago. An artist herself, known for her traditional weavings, Peggie opened the doors to Poppies Art and Gifts this spring to give local artists and artisans a platform to show and sell their work. Peggie was one of the original owners at OVA Arts, and she used the idea of their collective to inspire her own endeavor. Poppies Art and Gifts houses cutting boards, paintings, pastels, story boxes as well as many other hand-crafted items. Peggie shares, “We’ve become a real community hang-out, with our opening receptions and art markets every third Friday and second Sunday. This fall the Ojai Film Festival celebrates 20 years of bringing film to Ojai, and pays tribute to classic Hollywood with Lifetime Achievement Awards honoring actors Pat Boone and Eva Marie Saint. For directors, screenwriters, producers, animators, actors, students, Hollywood veterans, Academy members, and industry insiders alike, the Ojai Film Festival welcomes filmmakers and film lovers from around the world Oct. 31 through Nov. 10. Ranked one of the top 100 Best Reviewed Festivals by FilmFreeway, the Ojai Film Festival’s past roster of participants comprises films that went on to win Academy Awards, nominations, and other prestigious prizes. Continuing a longstanding tradition, the 20th annual festival spotlights ecology with Focus Earth, a full day dedicated to environmental films and eco-shorts. Headlining the event is the film Living In The Future’s Past, a beautifully photographed environmental documentary directed by Susan Kucera and narrated/produced by Jeff Bridges. A question-andanswer session and reception are planned to follow the film, slated for Nov. 10 at 4 pm.

Capping off this retro Hollywood weekend: Boone’s fellow Lifetime Achievement Award honoree, Saint, will screen her classic film, North by Northwest, on Nov. 3 at 7 pm, followed a reception in the Ojai Art Center Gallery.

The opening weekend will feature a throwback tribute to the olden days of big studios and contract players. Boone will attend the screening of his 1945 movie, State Fair, on Nov. 2 at 7 pm, followed by a reception at 9 pm. The next day, Nov. 3, veteran director/producer Hawk Koch will screen The Way We Were, starring Robert Redford and

Sunday morning’s Awards Brunch (Nov. 3 at 10 am) further recognizes Boone and Saint, and also announces the winners of the top films screened at the festival, the Gold Coast Award, and the Screenplay Competition prize. Local Ojai artist and legendary Mad Magazine illustrator Sergio Aragonés will present the Sergio Aragonés Award for Best Animation. After the brunch, professional actors will perform a live table-read of the winning screenplay at 1 pm. This year’s winner is a quirky journey of discovery: A Place Called Knock, written by Colleen Craig of Los Osos, CA. It’s the dramatic/comedic story of a young widow who accompanies her dying Mexican half-brother — a Buddhist monk — on a trip to their ancestral homeland of Ireland, where they uncover family secrets long hidden. Actor-director Will Wallace will helm the live read. “We added a screenplay competition to the festival in order to celebrate the very starting point of the creative process: the story,” said Bruce Novotny, screenplay competition Chairman. “The quality of the screenplays submitted, from all over the world, has been outstanding, and the live read of our most recent winning script was a big crowd favorite.”

Starting this year, the festival has added an award for best Gold Coast film to honor local filmmakers. The Gold Coast Film Series runs Nov. 4 from 1 to 10 pm and features films and shorts from local filmmakers in the counties of Ventura, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles.

This year they will present a retrospective on the career of the late great Penny Marshall. Other festival highlights include seminars on film distribution, business and legal aspects of film, cinematography, and a program tailored to high school student filmmakers.

A nonprofit labor of love run by film veterans and local volunteers, this international film festival continues its tradition of gifting Ojai with a free film on opening night in Ojai’s Libbey Bowl. As the kickoff of the 20th annual festival falls on Halloween this year, the festival will screen Tim Burton’s cult classic, The Nightmare Before Christmas. A Halloween fun fair and pre-show, dubbed “Carnivale!” precedes the movie. This masquerade-themed event features live music from the Ojai Mardi Gras Quartet led by Ojai’s Patricia Avis, with special performances by Radio Tequila’s Tequila Mockingbird, Ojai folk musician Rain Perry, and surprise guests. Local poet and “Carma Bum” Doug Knott will perform spoken word joined by Punk Princess Iris Berry, co-founder of Punk Hostage Press. Paulina Productions and Hamsa Dance bring out their professional belly dancing troupes in full costume to mesmerize and illuminate the Masquerade Halloween experience

Past entries have represented more than 46 countries, and categories include short or long narrative films, short or long documentary films, animations, and screenplays. Winning filmmakers accept several prizes, trophies, best-of category honors, and a Panavision camera rental package prize worth $60,000 for Best Student Film.

Treasures of Ojai has been a fixture on Signal Street in downtown Ojai for 26 years. Owner Katrina Sexton has 35 years of experience working with licensed appraisers and fine art and antique professionals. At 7,000 square feet and chock full of the unexpected, it’s the largest antique store in the Ojai Valley. Treasures is a long-time favorite spot for locals to take their out-oftown visitors for a bit of eclectic retail therapy. 15 vendors and more than 200 consigners supply the items for sale, and the professional presentation and curation by Treasures staff make an Aladdin’s Cave of the place. adults alike love poking around in vintage toys and Depressionera glassware. There is always some curiosity to be found and conversations to be sparked with children about what that funny object was actually used for. A recent visit yielded some gleeful surprises, including an armchair decorated in its entirety in tiny Native American beadwork, with a dazzling design of fantastical animals. Treasures, naturally, has a fair amount of Ojai memorabilia for purchase but there is also a good deal of Native American jewelry, antique and mid-century furniture and décor, plenty of vintage farm pieces, and some excellent vintage clothing. Ojai is a pretty eccentric place, and eccentric artifacts show up often at Treasures. For women, especially, the vintage clothing finds can be really special. At the back of the store is an extensive collection of vinyl, and they often have quality musical instruments for sale. This long-time family business continues to thrive as Katrina’s son, Mason, now manages the store day-to-day. As locals and visitors will attest, no thrifting or antique expedition in Ojai is complete without a visit to Treasures. The Olshefski family might have been swindled, but you could argue it was a blessing in disguise. Today, they run American Barn and Wood, a thriving business selling gorgeous pieces of oldgrowth wood sourced from Midwestern barns constructed in the 19th century.

About a decade ago, John and Kira Olshefski were in the market for an 18th Century Midwestern barn to refurbish for their California property. They found what they thought was an honest broker but were swindled painfully, and ended up with only half a barn. In the course of selling the timbers Fall 2019

of that barn, they discovered an underserved market for antique barns in California. People loved the quality old-growth wood from the past and wanted to incorporate it into their own homes. Now, nine years later, the Olshefskis run American Barn and Wood, a thriving family-owned reclaimed wood and lumber yard located in Paso Robles. Their inventory comes from 1800s Midwestern barns. And yes, it is actually possible to deconstruct, then ship, an entire barn to California, then reconstruct and repurpose the wood for anything you like — even a home. The bulk of Olshefski’s business is supplying reclaimed barn wood to contractors, decorators, homeowners, furniture and cabinetmakers, and anyone with a yearning to work with quality, old-growth wood from the past. They carry a selection of handhewn or rough-sawn beams, planks, weathered siding, and antique barn hardware. Reclaimed barn wood can be repurposed to make flooring, furniture, paneling, doors, wainscoting, and much more. Your imagination is really the only limit and the Olshefskis have the knowledge, enthusiasm, and excellent reputation for customer service to help you choose and purchase your piece of the past. Chestnut, for example, is a species that was wiped out in North America by an imported Asian fungus. The only way to obtain this hardy staple of the old Midwest now is to buy it as reclaimed wood. To keep prices affordable, the business doesn’t use a wood broker but deals directly with Midwest dismantling teams and barn-salvage crews, including an Amish team from Indiana. They also buy barns from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan. Each barn’s history is researched and each piece of wood comes with its own provenance and photographs 74

Why Visit the Santa Ynez Valley? In the Santa Ynez Valley, there are six picturesque, pedestrian-friendly towns, farmland as far as the eye can see, and welcoming locals. Pair that with grown-there world-class wines and dining, why are you at home reading this? It’s about two hours from the L.A. metro area and four from the Bay Area. There are other reasons to visit the heart of Santa Barbara County’s wine country. There’s a craft beer scene, as well as hiking, cycling, horseback riding, spas, shopping, gallery hopping, and lounging (as in lay around and do nothing). Ever wonder why the Santa Ynez Valley produces such wonderful wine? The secret ingredient is the Transverse Mountain ranges. They run east to west, allowing for more sunlight but cooler temperatures as the cool ocean breezes easily travel to the valley. Schedule ample time for wine tasting, because, guaranteed, it won’t be long enough.

• Ballard

Ballard’s pioneering spirit is alive and its charm well intact. Established in 1881, this hamlet is the smallest and oldest town in the Santa Ynez Valley.
