Archways and columns lead the way to Allegretto’s expansive 12,000 sq. ft. piazza. Exploration of the property is encouraged.

Ah, Paso Robles. Dubbed by some as the “new Napa,” Paso has exploded onto the wine scene in recent years. But despite its growing fame, Paso has managed to keep its rural cowboy charm and laid-back California vibe. Here are three Paso winers - and a few others from across the Central Coast, too - that have caught our eye.

of himself, from the grapes he grows to the expansive art collection he displays, even down to the exact height of each archway and the angle of each stone in the walkways. Allegretto is a musical term describing a cheerful tempo of 112 to 120 beats per minute, and for Ayres, there is music in every aspect of the resort — including the building itself.

Allegretto Vineyard Resort

“I look at this as sacred geometry infused through the music of the architecture,” he said. Exploration of the property is encouraged, so feel free to roam and discover the exquisite artwork and antiques (my favorite: the massive slice of Sequoia which is thousands of years old). Head out to the pool or the Abbey, or take a meditative walk in the sonic labyrinth and the 20-acre vineyards. There’s also a top-notch spa, and a restaurant, Cello, featuring Northern Italian cuisine.

Allegretto is conveniently located near downtown Paso just off CA-46, but is masterfully crafted to feel miles away from the rest of the world. There is so much to do and experience at Allegretto, it’s easy to fill your days immersed in its many offerings — and the wines are a perfect complement to it all. Allegretto is the passion project of Doug Ayres, of the Ayres hotel family. It has become a soulful extension

The 171 rooms surround a 12,000 sq. ft. piazza, which invites guests to hang with friends around the fountain, fire pits, and cozy nooks. Book a Prelude Terrazza room that overlooks the piazza, and plan to watch the sun set from your private patio — with a bottle of wine or two, of course. Oh yes, the wine! Like everything else at Allegretto, it is crafted with intention and harmony. “My philosophy of wine here is that it’s a qualitative component of love and balance, infused with the characteristics of all the body of the wine,” said Ayres. Our favorite was the Tannat. It is bold, with flavors of dark cherries and cinnamon, and an anise finish. The grapes for all Allegretto’s wines are sourced not only from the onsite vineyard, but also from Willow

Creek and a small selection of other Paso vineyards. Be sure to check out the Viognier, Vermintino, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec — all grown at the resort. All are on offer in the mellow, peaceful tasting room just off the main lobby. Allegretto Vineyard Resort is at 2700 Buena Vista Dr in Paso Robles. For more: allegrettowines.com, or (805) 369-2526.

Sculpterra

Art and wine: it’s the classic pairing. They both have the power to provoke contemplation, to ignite excitement. Paso’s Sculpterra checks those boxes emphatically, with artfully crafted wines, a passionate staff, and dedicated owners. It doesn’t hurt that they also happen to have an incredible sculpture collection.

Interesting and beautiful artwork abounds at Allegretto, includings in the tasting room (above). Book a room with a terrazza (below) and watch the sun set over the piazza.

Scattered amongst the gorgeous landscaping, you’ll find massive flying fish, dragonflies, jaguars, mammoths, eagles, and more. The level of detail and artistry is incredible — the wrought-iron gates, the light fixtures, the door handles, the embellishments in the tasting room’s exposed beams. The longer you look, the more you’ll discover. Be sure to check out one of the newest installations — a wall detailing the winemaking history of the Paso Robles region — while enjoying the regular live music acts that grace their outdoor stage. But hey, we all know why you’re really here: the wine. The Frankel family’s sprawling estate includes a bit of everything, like Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Merlot, Primitivo, Mouvedre, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, and Pinot Noir. Winemaker Paul Frankel literally grew up amongst the grapes, roaming the vineyards with his dad, Sculpterra founder Dr. Warren Frankel. When Paul joined the family business, he realized there was an area in the vineyards where the cool air settled at night, creating a microclimate that could

california101guide.com

support the Pinot Noir grape. “Nobody knows this land better than Paul,” Dale Morris, the Frankels’ neighbor who also works in the tasting room (and has her own wines, Jade Moon). “He is so invested in this place!” The result of this family affair? Sublime. The 2016 Pinot Noir offers

flavors of black tea leaves, cherry, clove, and mint, lingering on the finish. Our favorite was the ’15 Cab dubbed Bentley Ironworks, so named in honor of Sculpterra’s master blacksmith/sculptor Bob Bentley. Well structured with an oaky nose, it is enticingly balanced, with a tart berry taste and velvety oak-infused tannins. We also got a taste of the ’14, which was even more refined

and blissful. “This is what a Paso Cab should be,” said tasting room assistant manager, Darren Brown. (Side note for newbies: Don’t be afraid to reveal your novice. Darren, like all the Sculpterra gang, is a super patient and enthusiastic educator.)

Another favorite: The Héroe. The hard-working vineyard and production team are the inspiration behind Héroe. The faces of these “heroes” of the land grace the bottles of this offshoot of Sculpterra, and proceeds help operate free medical clinics in Baja California through The Flying Samaritans.

Don’t forget to grab a bag of pistachios before you leave the tasting room. They represent the starting point for Sculpterra four decades ago, and still reign over 30 acres of the estate. Sculpterra is at 5015 Linne Rd in Paso Robles. For more: sculpterra.com, or (805) 226-8881

Calcareous Vineyard

Perched on top of a hill up the winding Peachy Canyon Road lies a winery with some of the most stunning views to be had in the region: Calcareous Vineyard. From its tasting room, you can see 60 miles across the Salinas Valley. The views are inspiring, but it was the soil that originally inspired the father-daughter team of Lloyd Messer and Dana Brown to plant roots here. The limestone plateau is what gave the winery its name, and what prompted Lloyd and Dana to leave their native Iowa to create wines that “let the soil speak.” With its many artful details, you’ll want to linger in Sculpterra’s tasting room.

walking the land. He passed away in 2006, the first year of production. Calcareous honors him in numerous ways; look for the preserved set of his boots outside the tasting room, and the red blends bearing his name.

We loved the 2018 Vin Gris Cuvée, with its watermelon-honeydew nose and clean, cherry peach favor. With our long, hot summers that often overlap into fall, this super refreshing wine is a happy, easy-drinking wine. The ’17 Tres Violet was another winner, with its blend of 36 percent Grenache, 34 percent Mourvedre and 30 percent Syrah. Rich with supple tannins, this Rhone blend has intense flavors of cherry and chocolate.

Do yourself a favor and schedule a wine and artisan cheese pairing. As we gazed out over the valley, glass in hand, we had a cheerful de-

You’ll enjoy your tasting in the stunning Lloyd’s Lookout, which boasts 180-degree views — even from inside — and a large, grassy seating area on the edge of the hillside. The tasting room is, appropriately, named after founder Lloyd “Moose” Messer, who loved to spend long hours

Herzog Wine Cellars

Oxnard Based in Oxnard, Herzog Wine Cellars sources grapes from a huge swath of California. “Our vineyards stretch from Napa, to Lake County, to the Central Coast because we want to grow the right grapes in the right places so that they will express themselves perfectly,” said Herzog’s David Whittemore. Herzog now creates more than 50 different wines a year. New to the Herzog lineup this year are two sparkling wines (one red, one white). The Herzog family has been producing kosher wines in California since 1985, but the family traces its wine-making roots to Europe in 1775. Their tasting room offers flights of six to eight wines, spacious lounges (indoor and outdoor), and the option of taking a self-guided tour of their 77,000 sq. ft. facility. Bonus: They’ve got their own restaurant inside the winery! Tierra Sur is critically ac-

Old Creek Ranch Winery

Ventura A historic property that lies just inside the boundaries of the Ojai Valley, Old Creek Ranch Winery is enjoying a new life thanks to the Holguin family and winemaker Jeremy Leffert (also of Tooth & Nail). They’ve added a plethora of delectable outdoor seating areas, and “Much of the furniture is constructed from reclaimed wood from an old barn that was on the property,” said Jane Holguin. They’ve also begun replanting vineyards of Pinot Gris, Viognier, Albariño, Sauvignon Blanc, with plans for Petite Sirah, Grenache, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, and Syrah. For now, they source grapes from locations like Edna Valley, Los

Olivos District, and Alisos Canyon. This rural winery is ideal for an afternoon of wine tasting and lounging with friends, your kids, and your leashed dog, too! Old Creek Ranch is at 10024 E Old Creek Rd, Ventura. For more: oldcreekranch.com or (805) 649-4132.

Jamie Slone Winery

Santa Barbara Jamie Slone is a Renaissance man. He’s run radio stations, worked in real estate, raced cars in Sonoma, and now, owns Jamie Slone Winery with his wife, Kym. This “micro boutique” winery in the Historic El Paseo only makes about 50 to 100 cases of each varietal with winemaker in Steve Clifton (of Brewer-Clifton Winery). “Our wine is not esoteric,” Jamie said. “It’s representative of Kym and myself.” The word has gotten out about this winery — in July, they were named “Best Winery” and “Best Tasting

Room” in the Santa Barbara NewsPress Readers Choice Awards. New to the downtown Santa Barbara tasting room: an outdoor terrazza seating area. Jamie Slone is at 23 E De La Guerra St, Santa Barbara. For more: jamieslonewines.com or (805) 560-6555

Grassini Family Vineyards

Santa Barbara There’s a reason Grassini Family Vineyards includes the word “family” in their name. Founders Larry and Sharon Grassini, with support from their four daughters, operate their Santa Ynez vineyard. But it wasn’t until vineyard experts informed them that their 104-acre parcel had huge potential to grow Bordeaux varietals that they decided to plant grapes. Today, their Historic El Paseo tasting rooms spotlight their Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, among others. They’ve won a slew of awards — most recently (2018) Best Urban Tasting Room, Best Winery, and Best Tasting Room by the Santa Barbara News-Press and Santa Barbara Independent. They also operate sustainably: the vineyard and winery on solar power, the winery is built from reclaimed wood, and uses reclaimed water to irrigate their landscaping. Grassini Family Vineyards is at 24 El Paseo, Santa Barbara. For more: grassinifamilyvineyards.com or (805) 897-3366

Au Bon Climat

Santa Barbara A trip to France in the mid ‘70s changed the course of Jim Clendenen’s life. Rather than continue on his path to becoming an attorney, he decided to pursue winemaking. Since the early ‘80s, he has built Au Bon Climat into a winery with an international reputation. Perhaps best known for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and

california101guide.com

Pinot Gris, Au Bon Climat sources fruit from Clendenen’s Le Bon Climat Vineyard, as well as from Bien Nacido Vineyard, Sanford & Benedict Vineyard, Los Alamos Vineyard, and Talley Vineyard, among others. Visitors to his Historic El Paseo tasting room can sample Au Bon Climat and several of Clendenen’s other projects, such as Clendenen Family Vineyard, Ici/La-Bas, Barham Mendelsohn, and Vita Nova. Au Bon Climat is at 813 Anacapa St, Santa Barbara. For more: aubonclimat.com or (805) 963-7999

Cebada Wine

Santa Barbara Sandra Newman wears lots of hats: owner of Cebada Wine and Forbidden Fruit Orchards, horticulturist, and winemaker. Her 100-acre farm came first in 2002, followed four years later by seven and a half acres of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. A horticulturist with two degrees in plant science, Newman said, “My style is old-world style winemaking — very much French style.” Her wines are gaining momentum; the French Laundry just purchased a case of her Sparkling Rosé, and her wines are being featured in tastings at both Belmond El Encanto and the Ritz Carlton Bacara. She’ll also be featured in a forthcoming book about female winemakers in Santa Barbara County. New at Cebada’s downtown Santa Barbara tasting room: a blueberry dessert wine made from organic berries grown at Newman’s farm. Stop in on Saturdays, when she’s almost always in the tasting room. Cebada is at 813 Anacapa St, Santa Barbara. For more: cebadawine.com or (805) 451-2570

Brick Barn Wine Estate

Buellton Brick Barn’s 35-acre estate is situated on a pocket of land that benefits from its proximity to the ocean (just

10 miles away) and the long, sunny days of the Central Coast. Their name comes from an early 1970s brick horse barn on the property, which now serves as the tasting room. Opening their doors seven years ago, Brick Barn is helmed by Norman and Kathleen Williams and winemaker Rob DaFoe. Brick Barn’s tasting room features indoor seating as well as sprawling outdoor patios, with fireplaces and plenty of space to take in the expansive views. While there, be sure to check out the Albariño, which has won awards in Sonoma County and San Francisco. But with a slew of wines from Syrah to Vermentino, Pinot Noir to Grenache Blanc and more, you’ll find something to suit every tastebud. Brick Barn is at 795 W Hwy 246, Buellton. For more: brickbarnwine estate.com or (805) 686-1208

Niven Family Wines

San Luis Obispo Why have one winery when you can have four? Baileyana, Tangent, True Muth and Zocker make up the Niven Family Wines. Together, they offer more than 30 wines. “(W)e really can find a wine that suits every palate – from crisp and vibrant Albariño and butter Chardonnay, to elegant Pinot Noirs and big, juicy Cabernet Sauvignon!” said Niven’s Karl Boone. Niven grows 11 grape varieties that showcase their property’s cool climate. At the historic tasting room (located in a schoolhouse built in 1909), you can taste across all four Niven brands. Then, play some bocce ball, rent a picnic table, and book a cheese and charcuterie platter before taking in the amazing views. Niven Family Wines is at 5828 Orcutt Rd, San Luis Obispo. For more: nivenfamilywines.com or (805) 269-8200 This is the first in a series about Central Coast wines. Which should we cover next? Email mhall@ca101guide.com.

Exhibition title: “Sentenced to Death” Friday 9/27 at 7:30 pm, Free Admission This one night pop-up performance art event by conceptual artist Miss Art World presents a disturbing and obsessive struggle to obtain the unrealistic “perfected” physical body. Performance art pushes the audience to actively experience live unpredictable and spontaneous art unfolding before them. Miss Art World’s performances toy with glamour and disgust, taken to the extremes and pushed to death. Exhibition title: Magical Realism | 10/5 - 11/16 | 7:30 pm Free Admission Omar D'Leon & Andrea Yomtob - Magical Realism is chiefly a Latin-American narrative strategy that is characterized by the matter-of-fact inclusion of fantastic or mythical elements into seemingly realistic fiction. Omar and Andrea use vibrantly rich, bold color in their work. Omar D'León is a Nicaraguan painter and poet whose work is collected in national institutions of fine art across the Americas. D'León studied nine years at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in Nicaragua under its director Rodrigo Peñalba. He moved to Camarillo a quarter of a century ago. Omar D'Leon and Andrea Yomtob artists use painting technique that incorporates oil and wax on canvas. Each layer of paint is scratched through to reveal the color beneath, creating a style very reminiscent of Impressionism. The technique was developed by Omar d’ León and later taught to his pupil, Andrea Yomtob. Omar and Andrea have been painting together at Omar's studio in Camarillo for almost 25 years. Fall 2019

Halloween in Heritage Valley By Rachael Quisel

For many travelers, CA-Highway 126 serves as little more than a conduit between U.S. Route 101 on the coast, and Interstate 5 in Los Angeles County. But do yourself a favor: next time you’re on the 126, stop and do a little exploring. Collectively known as the Heritage Valley, the communities of Santa Paula, Fillmore, and Piru will surprise you with the number of activities, events, museums, restaurants, and culture they offer. If it’s spooky fall fun you seek, look no further — the Heritage Valley has you covered with its Ghostwalk and the Zombie Hunter Train. Now in its 25th year, the family-friendly Ghostwalk spotlights some of the area’s creepiest bits of folklore. Adult audiences, meanwhile, can hop on a historic train car at the Fillmore & Western Railway to battle zombies — with a paintball gun in one hand and a drink in the other. • Defend your train from zombies!

• Hear ghost stories straight from the source!

Halloween: The night when the dead come back to life. Are you ready for the zombie apocalypse? Hone your survival skills on Fillmore’s Zombie Hunter Train, and you’ll be prepared when grassy graves break open and bony hands pop through!

As the season of trick-or-treat draws near, Ghostwalk 2019 provides an immersive theatrical experience sure to delight the whole family. While you stroll, the phantoms, specters, and spooks of all sorts that lived (or might have lived) in the Santa Clara River Valley take corporeal form to share their tales. There’s no shortage of creatively batty stories, all inspired by real — or really-well imagined — events. This year, your ghoulish guide will take you deep into the confines of a circa-1920s circus, where tiger trainer Mabel Stark leads you around to each doomed act.

If you choose to accept this mission, you’ll be carted onto one of Fillmore & Western Railway’s historic trains and conveyed down a rural railway. Once you reach ground zero, you’ll battle with the army of the undead! But don’t worry. You’ll be surrounded by other fighters, and you’ll all be armed with Stryker Paintball & Airsoft zombie-destroying weapons. Each fighter has up to 250 paintballs, which is a lot considering these boogeymen haven’t got anything to shoot back with! Zombies will roam the fields as you and your teammates paint them up — it’s practically target practice. Children as young as 8 years old are recruited to the front lines against the zombies. Several hundred people, including many families, sign up for the hour-long event at the start of every spooky season, hosts say. They claim no railroad employees have fallen to the dread zombie disease, but past guests insist they’ve seen a decaying corpse shuffling through the train’s aisles. Zombie hunters have reported that “the zombie actors were great and would even fall to the ground and play dead.” Tickets are known to sell out, so don’t hesitate if you want a chance to go on this thrilling train ride! You can also simply watch the slaughter if you prefer. Whether you want to blast zombies, or sit back and enjoy some adult beverages and watch the ensuing slaughter, you’re sure to have a fun time! Starting Oct. 5 and continuing every weekend through Oct. 27, you’ll have the opportunity to prove yourself. Departure times are at 5:30, 7:30 and 8:30 pm. Rumor has it, the late rides make for a good scare. Will you join in the fight? Prices are $55 for Zombie Hunters and $25 for spectator passengers.

One Ghostwalk performer said that the ghoulish production can be a “rollerghoster.” But, seriously, don’t worry too much: Since the tour began 25 years ago, the only bone that past patrons have complained of breaking has been their funny bone. Presented by the Santa Paula Theater Center, the production is quite an undertaking, and each year has brought new poltergeists to the stage. The current buzz is that magicians, clowns, and even trained animals have been added to the long list of undead entertainers. But whichever phantasm haunts the tent, remember that the stories are all dead-icated to you, dear guest. This year’s walk will be hosted in the old Fumigation Building, but don’t hold your breath waiting in line to buy tickets. Patrons are encouraged to reserve in advance. Performances take place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings from Oct. 11 to 27. The 1-hour tour starts every 30 minutes beginning at 6 pm, with the last one at 9 pm. Cost is $15 for adults and $10 for children younger than 12. While rumors abound that some ghosts are former patrons of the walk, you can trust that your tour won’t come to a dead end. All captive audience members inevitably make their way to their final resting place. After all, fortune favors the grave.

MaKe cenTRaL coaST PRoDuce The STaR oF YouR neXT hoLiDaY PaRTY By Randy Graham When you think of fruit and vegetables from California, you may think about produce harvested in the Salinas or San Joaquin valleys. Me? I think about the abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables grown on the farms of California’s Central Coast and valleys.

food. Zucchini is a nutritional, power-packed veggie high in vitamins A, B6, C, and folate.

Most fruits and vegetables are low in calories and high in vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Pistachio nuts, for example, are high in potassium; two ounces of pistachios contain more potassium than a large banana. Plums are rich in antioxidants, which fight free radicals, helping to prevent heart diseases and stroke. Pumpkins have a low-calorie count, making them a weight loss-friendly

With the holidays coming up, so too will the holiday gatherings. Why not ditch the chips-and-dip routine and bring along a healthy, locally-grown dish instead?

Granita, Watermelon Cubes, and Pistachios

Bonus — all four are grown on the Central Coast!

Here are a few of my recipes that feature some of our region’s best fare. They’re sure to be the talk of your holiday potluck!

The key to good granita is to use the freshest of ingredients. In this recipe, the combination of fresh ginger, fresh jalapeño, and freshsqueezed lime juice explodes on your palate. The flavor of the watermelon is a bonus. The bold flavors in this granita linger a little too long on the palate to use it as a palate cleanser between courses, as is sometimes done. It does, however, make for a beautiful dessert! Visit the Santa Barbara Pistachio Company for farm-fresh pistachios. They are located at 3380 Highway 33, Ventucopa. See them also at the Ojai and Santa Barbara Certified Farmers’ Markets. Ingredients:

Granita is a frozen dessert made from sugar, water, and assorted flavors. That’s all there is to it.

Savory Pumpkin Soup

1 cup sugar 3 1/2 cups water 2 tablespoons fresh ginger (peeled and chopped fine)

1 jalapeño (seeds removed, chopped fine) I got the herbs and spices just right, and before you could say “Bob’s your uncle,” my wife and I were enjoying this savory soup. It is the perfect fall/winter belly-warmer-upper. Ingredients: 4 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 white or yellow onion (chopped) 2 cloves garlic (peeled and minced) 1 teaspoon ground turmeric 1 teaspoon ground ginger 1 /2 teaspoon curry powder 1 /2 teaspoon rubbed sage 1 tablespoon fresh parsley (chopped) 8 cups fresh pumpkin (peeled, seeded, and cut into cubes)

I make a similar soup with butternut squash. So, one day last year I thought maybe I could substitute fresh pumpkin for the squash and have an entirely new soup recipe. I experimented until 26

Fall 2019

2 cups vegetable broth 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1 /2 cup heavy cream (plus extra for garnish) 1 /2 teaspoon salt 1 /2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper

Zest of 1 lime (chopped) 3 /4 cup fresh lime juice 4 cups watermelon (1-inch cubes) 4 teaspoons pistachio nuts (shelled, roasted, and chopped)

2 tablespoons fresh mint (chopped coarsely) Directions: Combine the sugar, water, ginger, and jalapeño in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Simmer 5 minutes, remove from the heat. Cool then strain into a bowl. Stir in the lime zest and juice. Pour into a flat container that will hold the mixture 1 inch high and fit into your freezer. Freeze for 2 hours, stirring every 30 minutes to form a slush. Place watermelon cubes in a large bowl and toss with the mint. To serve, put a half-cup of granita in a glass, add a cup of the watermelon, sprinkle with a teaspoon of pistachios and top with a small spoonful of granita. Garnish with a small sprig of mint and serve immediately. Directions: In a large soup pot, melt the butter over mediumhigh heat. Add the onion and cook for 5 minutes, or until translucent. Add the garlic, turmeric, ginger, curry, and parsley. Cook, stirring, for 1 minute more. Add the pumpkin and vegetable broth. Reduce heat to simmer, cover, and cook for 30 minutes, or until the pumpkin has softened completely. Transfer the soup (you may need to do this in batches) to a blender and process until smooth. Return the soup to the pot and add the lime juice, cream, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine and cook until warmed through. To serve, ladle into bowls and drizzle cream on top. I like to serve this with a fresh loaf of crusty rustic bread. Tip: This recipe makes enough soup for four adults. It can easily be doubled if you need more! california101guide.com

Mark Churchill: Caveman Chemistry By Amelia Fleetwood Mark Churchill has been making pottery for more than 25 years. Inspired by traditional Japanese and Korean craftsmanship, his collections feature handmade dinnerware, mugs, vessels, and sculptures. “I make everything, but creating really practical pieces is important because my life is very much based on function,” Mark said. “Those are the things that matter.” Drawn to pieces that have a quiet, uncomplicated presence, Mark has a unique style that mixes a MidCentury/Scandinavian feel with more traditional Asian influences. Each of his firings is completely unique; the subtle differences in every piece are regarded not as imperfections, but proof of life. Mark strives to create work that is soulful. He uses materials for clay and glazes that echo the natural

After taking to ceramics in high school, Mark continued to study with local Ojai master ceramist, Frank Massarella. “My mother is an artist and everyone in my family makes things with their hands, so I tested out of school and left to apprentice Frank.” For Mark, being part of a pottery lineage is important; he’s had the same apprentice for the last five years, Kiren Sahgal. Mark added, “My theory is that I will certainly die with a minimum of 5,000 things left unmade. That’s why we have apprentices: Because one, hopefully they will be better than

knowledge as a legacy. Of course, it changes its manifestation and incarnation, but if you put Frank’s work, my work, and Kiren’s work all next to each other, anyone could see that they are all related and connected.” Mark chats with his apprentice, Kirin Sahgal. Southern Californian ceramics was because I had known him since I put on the map began on my own ceramic path,” with the help of acclaimed master Mark said. “I was Frank’s apprentice, ceramists Beatrice Wood, and Otto but Otto was always so helpful and Vivika Heino. These particular and generous with me. There are artists also famously made Ojai certain things that I learned from their home. When Otto Heino died, him that I use to this day.” On a Mark was brought in as an expert lighter note, he jokes, “Having that by The Thacher School to facilitate kiln also allowed me to use the the difficult job of moving and greatest pick-up line a potter could dismantling his heavy and fragile ask for when I was courting my wife, kilns. Rebekah. ‘I’ve got my own kiln if you “I was lucky enough to be given one ever need me to fire anything for of Otto’s kilns, which was incredible you!’ It worked like a charm.”

Feeling lucky to have (as Mark puts it) the most magical set up of all time, Mark credits his obsession and compulsion as his driving force. “It’s me watching stuff go around in circles most of the time, and my nemesis is that hammock over there.” (He pointed to a cozy hammock hanging in the yard nearby.) “It’s all I do and all I think about. At this point, my brain chemistry is such that if I don’t sit down and throw, it’s very easy to tell that something is off with me.” Part of the original ceramic process is to access materials from the natural world. low temperature. Adding elements such as ash and sand, which have a higher melting temperature, is how the development of high-fired stoneware and porcelain originated. Mark elaborated, “Back in time, someone probably got a kiln too hot and the ash, which was a byproduct of a wood they were using, settled on the pots and melted into a glaze. They were probably like ‘OH MY GOD,’ and from there it’s just caveman chemistry. It’s all very basic, really. The ash comes from our trees at the ranch and is often a result of my family sitting around a fire pit, talking.” Most of Mark’s pieces survived the 2017 Thomas Fire, inspiring him to go forward making only pieces that have a timeless quality, as this type of artwork stays put once it’s fired. Mark added, “Aside from bronze sculptures, high fired ceramics, particularly porcelain, are the things that would withstand the world ending!

Because of this, I am really cautious and extra hard on myself as to what goes out into the world.” Mark also spends time teaching ceramics at The Clay School in Ojai, finding it inspiring watching his students take up this art form for the first time. “When I was young, pottery was not cool. I would have had a very different life growing up nowadays, where pottery is cool and marijuana is legal,” he joked. These days, Mark’s work is found at Ojai’s highly curated lifestyle store, In the Field, as well as in other stores worldwide that share his aesthetic and quest for elevated, thoughtful design. He will also be showing his sculptures in Ojai’s The Basic Premise Gallery in early 2020. For updates and more, see markchurchillceramics.com.

Sleeping with the ghosts By Rachael Quisel

These chilling accommodations are a great place to rest your head. Just keep one eye open.

 Bella Maggiore Inn Ventura

Lights flickering? Smell a rose-

scented perfume? Maybe it’s In Ventura, Sylvia Michaels, looking for her the Bella gentleman caller at the Bella Maggiore Inn … Maggiore Inn has been operating since 1926 with a full staff and a few extras. Guests note their paranormal encounters in a thick book in the inn’s front parlor.

Just how many poltergeists roam the Bella Maggiore’s halls is a mystery. It’s rumored that the ghosts were victims of an organized crime unit that purportedly ran its business from the inn. Within the dark past of the now-pleasant inn are the deaths of previous guests: Mark, who died of a drug overdose, and Elizabeth, a small child who was murdered on the first floor, to name a few. But the most frequent midnight visitor is Sylvia Michaels. Many who visit the Bella Maggiore have an encounter with what they can only describe as her specter. Around 1947, she was murdered — or died by suicide — in Room 17 where she lived for a period. Some say she was a writer, but most believe she was a lady of the night who rendezvoused with her clients at the inn. Perhaps the fact that she only knocks on a door if the room is occupied by a man is evidence of the latter. She also has a tendency to prank men by moving their wallets, though both men and women report smelling 40

soul remains. The room is a hub for paranormal activity, guests say.

While you’re visiting, if you feel that the air has been sucked out of the room or notice flickering lights, it may be signs of an otherworldly encounter at the Bella Maggiore.

However, patrons have reported their belongings being moved and seeing the form of ghostly apparitions all over the inn. Even a piano appears to have been enchanted, as the instrument’s bell-like music can be heard intermittently during the day or night.

Bella Maggiore Inn is located at 67 S California St, Ventura

 Glen Tavern Inn Santa Paula

Be sure not to cheat at cards at the Glen Tavern Inn. You may just end up roommates with the specter in Room 307.

Constructed in 1911, the Glen Tavern Inn has a long and spirited history. The hotel’s motto, “Where the Past Comes to Life,” is dead-on, as ghosts allegedly haunt the rooms to this day. In fact, the hotel is so renowned for its uninvited guests that it was featured on an episode of Ghost Adventures in 2013 and “The Dead Files” in 2014.

Rumored to have been a speakeasy during prohibition, the Glen Tavern was no stranger to debauchery. Dark happenings beyond the standard gambling and drinking took place within its walls. It’s said that a man caught cheating at cards was murdered in Room 307, where his unsettled Why do I get the feeling someone is watching me?

 Hyatt Centric

Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara You’ll want to sleep with the lights on at the Hyatt Centric Santa Barbara, which was once a WWII hospital. Both employees and guests have reported paranormal activity such as creaky bodiless footsteps that pace back and forth along the hallways, shadows that seem to move of their own volition, and airborne objects. It makes one wonder if perhaps some veterans decided to stay on long after the california101guide.com

of the Central Coast war ended. Even the wires connecting the electrical current seem to be penetrated by supernatural forces, as the lights flicker on and off without cause. I’d bring along a flashlight just in case you’re thrust into total darkness. Right around the witching hour at the Hyatt Centric, between three and four in the morning, it’s rumored that motion detectors sense activity when there is nothing around to be seen with the human eye. It would seem these particular ghosts have a knack when it comes to electricity. They certainly know how to turn on my sympathetic nervous system!  Historic Santa Maria Inn Santa Maria

Did silent film actor Rudolph Valentino return to the Historic Santa Maria Inn after his death?

This Historic Santa Maria Inn isn’t just a popular place for politicians and celebrities; according to local lore, it’s a favorite place for poltergeists.

Built in 1917, word got out about the inn’s quality accommodations, and famous folks journeying along El Camino Real regularly stopped in. Those who found refuge at the Santa Maria reportedly include President Herbert Hoover, Charlie Chaplin, Cary Grant, Marilyn Monroe, Bob Hope, William Randolph Hearst, and Rudolph Valentino among others. california101guide.com

Rumor has it that Valentino — a heartthrob actor who starred in several well-known silent films — checked back in to the hotel after his untimely death at the age of 31. But he was missing one vital thing: his body! His room door, marked with a star and his name, is said to be knocked on at all hours of the day or night, though when guests open the door, there’s no one behind it. There have even been accounts of clientele finding the Latin lover sprawled out on the room’s bed. Another room, said to be haunted by a sea captain and his mistress, may not have the notoriety of Valentino, but that’s compensated by ghostly pranks such as cold spots, slamming doors, strobing lights, and a ghoulish surprise at the foot of the bed. But these occurrences aren’t restricted to the rooms; professionals found evidence of supernatural activity in the Santa Maria’s gardens and the cellar. There’s even mysterious piano music that serenades the patrons. But guests can rest assured: These ghosts are known to be friendly, if a bit mischievous. The Historic Santa Maria Inn is located at 801 S Broadway, Santa Maria

 Paso Robles Inn Paso Robles There’s unfinished business at the Paso Robles Inn.

Stormy evenings make ghosts nervous — especially J.H. Emsley. Rumor has it he likes to make calls to the front desk when the skies turn angry over the Paso Robles Inn.

A brick hotel was originally built here in 1890 by architect Stanford White, who also designed Madison

Square Garden and the Boston Public Library. The Paso Robles Inn was supposed to be everlasting. But, in 1940, careless guests started a fire that resulted in its destruction. J.H. Emsley, the night clerk, discovered the blaze and sounded the alarm. Everyone escaped alive, except him. He reportedly died of a heart attack before learning that all the guests had made it to safety. In 1945, some of the original bricks were used to rebuild the hotel, including the notorious Room 1007. Shortly thereafter, the phantom phone calls from that room began. The phone would ring and the hotel attendant would pick it up only to hear nothing on the other end. Perplexed, staff at the Paso Robles Inn sought the aid of the phone company, who reported no mechanical problems. The calls are usually made on stormy evenings. Once, instead of calling the front desk, the room dialed 911; even spookier, the call was placed at just about the same time the distress call was made in the 1940 fire. A few hotel employees have conjectured that Emsley’s spirit, infused into the walls of the new wing, continues to strive to protect the hotel guests to this day. Book 1007 early, as the room haunted by this heroic ghost is in high demand. The Paso Robles Inn is located at 1103 Spring St, Paso Robles

R

ancho San Marcos, Santa Barbara • Rancho is a short but beautiful drive from Santa Barbara and is only 15 minutes from wine country. As we pulled up to the clubhouse we were greeted by friendly staff, and within minutes I was hitting complimentary balls on the driving range. After a quick warm-up, Jason and I teed off. Despite playing during peak time the pace was great, and because of the rural setting it felt like we were miles away from civilization — a huge perk for those golfers looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of life.

As we worked our way through the course, we crossed paths with a pack of wild turkeys and all kinds of other wildlife. As for the course, at 6,939 yards, I was left with some long and challenging second shots, but Jason’s long and accurate drives kept him in position for a low score. Throughout the day, the course conditions remained stellar, and of the three courses it was clear that Rancho San Marcos benefitted the most from the recent rainy season. The fairways were nice and it paid to stay within their parameters, as I quickly discovered. The greens were challenging but true and fast; if I had one “gripe,” it was that they were hard. More than one of my approach shots landed on the green but ended up sliding off the backside; but as the round went on both Jason and I adjusted.

Regarding the round, Jason said, “Rancho San Marcos has always been a fun course and I’m excited to play that track every chance I get. Being that it is set back into the Santa Ynez Mountains, it makes for a peaceful day, and there is something spiritual about the surroundings.” When considering the course, pace of play, green fees, staff, and just the overall experience in general, we gave Rancho San Marcos two thumbs up. a Purisima, Lompoc • The second course on our list was La Purisima. Much like Rancho San Marcos, La Purisima is a short 30-mile drive from Santa Barbara. Once you get to the course, the views are breathtaking and the course is in terrific shape.

Despite the warnings of afternoon winds, Jason and I had a midday tee time, and the first tee box was open and awaiting our arrival. After teeing off we did not catch the group ahead of us for the better part of an hour, and even then the pace of play was excellent.

La Purisima

Photos by Aidan Bradley As a first-time golfer at La Purisima I wasn’t too sure what to expect, other than it had a reputation as one of the best courses on the Central Coast — and I quickly discovered why. The tree-lined fairways and strategically placed bunkers underscored the importance of being accurate off the tee, and I found myself laying up more than I normally would. Even for Jason, who has played the course for years, the layout was a challenge and he’d have to pause to think about a number of his shots throughout the day.

“La Purisima is a tough course, but if I can get into a groove and I’m smart off the tee, I tend to score pretty well. The best part of this course is that it tests all aspects of your game which is one of the reasons I like it so much. If you get careless you’ll rack up strokes in a hurry,” he said. A lot was made of the afternoon winds and while we did get some, it wasn’t enough to make a big difference on our round. After a solid first nine, my back nine got a little rocky; the challenging 12th hole — a par-5 — increased my overall score by nine strokes. I was able to right the ship but the damage was done. After having a blast on the course, we finished with a cold beverage in the clubhouse, where the staff was friendly and welcoming. Our La Purisima outing was stellar, and it was way more than I expected leading up to the round. I’ll definitely be returning in the near future for another crack at No. 12. We give La Purisima two big thumbs up! La Purisima is located at 3455 E Highway 246, Lompoc Book a tee time and learn more: lapurisimagolf.com; (805) 735-8395 50

T

he River Course at Alisal, Solvang • At 6,830 yards, the par-72 Alisal course was the one I knew the least about heading into this golf adventure. The course was described to me as challenging but forgiving, and I think that was a perfect description of my overall experience. The River Course is located in Solvang so it is easy to get to and is in close proximity to many great restaurants and wineries. Our day at the River Course started with an early tee time and we were treated to a brisk, clear day with no trace of wind whatsoever. There were a number of groups that got out ahead of us but the pace of play was ideal and we rarely had to wait at any point during our round.

The River Course at Alisal

Photos by Aidan Bradley

I found the fairways manageable and it was clear The River Course rewards players who hit the ball long and straight. Jason managed to go under par for the front nine — mostly due to great tee shots which left him with relatively simple approach shots. For a less accomplished golfer like me, when I stayed in the fairway I saw success but if I hit wide, my second shots were pretty challenging. Jason and I both putted well at The River Course because the greens were in magnificent condition and the ball rolled true throughout the day. “I’d say the greens here were the best of the three courses we played. I was striking the ball pretty well, but my putting was spot-on. It’s been a few years since I had a chance to go under par for the day but I nearly did it today,” said Jason. With the condition of the course, the stunning views of the Santa Ynez Valley and the overall experience of our round, we also gave The River Course two big thumbs up. After our round we enjoyed lunch at the River Grill, which proved to be an excellent choice. The food was stellar and the atmosphere was relaxing — just what we needed after a round of golf. Local Ojai artist and legendary Mad Magazine illustrator Sergio Aragonés will present the Sergio Aragonés Award for Best Animation. After the brunch, professional actors will perform a live table-read of the winning screenplay at 1 pm. This year’s winner is a quirky journey of discovery: A Place Called Knock, written by Colleen Craig of Los Osos, CA. It’s the dramatic/comedic story of a young widow who accompanies her dying Mexican half-brother — a Buddhist monk — on a trip to their ancestral homeland of Ireland, where they uncover family secrets long hidden. Actor-director Will Wallace will helm the live read. “We added a screenplay competition to the festival in order to celebrate the very starting point of the creative process: the story,” said Bruce Novotny, screenplay competition Chairman. “The quality of the screenplays submitted, from all over the world, has been outstanding, and the live read of our most recent winning script was a big crowd favorite.”

We’re particularly proud of the fact that over a dozen films first shown at the Ojai Film Festival went on to win great honors elsewhere, including Academy Awards and Nominations.”

✺ Treasures of Ojai Ojai

Carefully curated spaces make Treasures of Ojai a delight to explore.

Treasures of Ojai has been a fixture on Signal Street in downtown Ojai for 26 years. Owner Katrina Sexton has 35 years of experience working with licensed appraisers and fine art and antique professionals. At 7,000 square feet and chock full of the unexpected, it’s the largest antique store in the Ojai Valley. Treasures is a long-time favorite spot for locals to take their out-oftown visitors for a bit of eclectic retail therapy. 15 vendors and more than 200 consigners supply the items for sale, and the professional presentation and curation by Treasures staff make an Aladdin’s Cave of the place. Children and california101guide.com

adults alike love poking around in vintage toys and Depressionera glassware. There is always some curiosity to be found and conversations to be sparked with children about what that funny object was actually used for. A recent visit yielded some gleeful surprises, including an armchair decorated in its entirety in tiny Native American beadwork, with a dazzling design of fantastical animals. Treasures, naturally, has a fair amount of Ojai memorabilia for purchase but there is also a good deal of Native American jewelry, antique and mid-century furniture and décor, plenty of vintage farm pieces, and some excellent vintage clothing. Ojai is a pretty eccentric place, and eccentric artifacts show up often at Treasures. For women, especially, the vintage clothing finds can be really special. At the back of the store is an extensive collection of vinyl, and they often have quality musical instruments for sale. This long-time family business continues to thrive as Katrina’s son, Mason, now manages the store day-to-day. As locals and visitors will attest, no thrifting or antique expedition in Ojai is complete without a visit to Treasures. Hours of operation are Monday to Saturday 10 am to 5 pm, and Sunday 11 am to 5 pm. Learn more at treasuresofojai.com where you

will also find a link to their Etsy site. Treasures of Ojai: 110 N Signal St, Ojai; (805) 646-2852

✺ American Barn & Wood Paso Robles

The Olshefski family might have been swindled, but you could argue it was a blessing in disguise. Today, they run American Barn and Wood, a thriving business selling gorgeous pieces of oldgrowth wood sourced from Midwestern barns constructed in the 19th century.

About a decade ago, John and Kira Olshefski were in the market for an 18th Century Midwestern barn to refurbish for their California property. They found what they thought was an honest broker but were swindled painfully, and ended up with only half a barn. In the course of selling the timbers Fall 2019

73

of that barn, they discovered an underserved market for antique barns in California. People loved the quality old-growth wood from the past and wanted to incorporate it into their own homes. Now, nine years later, the Olshefskis run American Barn and Wood, a thriving family-owned reclaimed wood and lumber yard located in Paso Robles. Their inventory comes from 1800s Midwestern barns. And yes, it is actually possible to deconstruct, then ship, an entire barn to California, then reconstruct and repurpose the wood for anything you like — even a home. The bulk of Olshefski’s business is supplying reclaimed barn wood to contractors, decorators, homeowners, furniture and cabinetmakers, and anyone with a yearning to work with quality, old-growth wood from the past. They carry a selection of handhewn or rough-sawn beams, planks, weathered siding, and antique barn hardware. Reclaimed barn wood can be repurposed to make flooring, furniture, paneling, doors, wainscoting, and much more. Your imagination is really the only limit and the Olshefskis have the knowledge, enthusiasm, and excellent reputation for customer service to help you choose and purchase your piece of the past. Chestnut, for example, is a species that was wiped out in North America by an imported Asian fungus. The only way to obtain this hardy staple of the old Midwest now is to buy it as reclaimed wood. To keep prices affordable, the business doesn’t use a wood broker but deals directly with Midwest dismantling teams and barn-salvage crews, including an Amish team from Indiana. They also buy barns from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan. Each barn’s history is researched and each piece of wood comes with its own provenance and photographs 74

✺ Antique Center Mall Santa Barbara

A Piece of the Past offers a “controlled chaos” antiquing experience in the sweet town of Solvang.

Now in its 14th year of operation, but comprising a team with over 35-years’ experience, The Antique Center Mall is recognized as Santa Barbara’s premier antiques and collectibles showroom, settling more estates than all of the other local companies combined. As Certified Personal Property Appraisers, their specialty is performing appraisals of both single items and entire estates, and conducting estate sales for clients throughout the region. Verbal on-site appraisals of pieces are available on a walk-in basis but if you suspect you have something of great value on your hands, a certified appraiser will guide you through the process and find trustworthy collectors and auction houses to handle the sale. The showroom itself hosts 20 different dealers and a wonderland of items running the gamut from antique through retro. california101guide.com

On the western end of Solvang, A Piece of the Past is a lively antique and vintage mall in the traditional “controlled chaos” style, which is a wonderful thing when treasure hunting! Who knows what you will stumble upon, or where! With over 4,000 sq. ft. of space and 28 different dealers, patrons will find fun shabby chic and vintage items galore, each piece tagged with its own description and whatever history of it is known. The prices are reasonable and the ladies on the shop floor are an informed but not pushy crew. The atmosphere is one of relaxed browsing with all sorts of curiosities to snoop out. Find out more and plan your visit at apieceofthepastsolvang.com. Hours of operation are 7 days a week, 10:30 am to 5:30 pm. A Piece of the Past: 1430 Mission Dr, Solvang; (805) 688-5533

✺ Los Alamos Depot Mall

Los Alamos The name “Los Alamos Depot Mall” is rooted in the fact that Los Alamos was, between 1882 and 1938, the end-of-the-line depot of the Narrow Gauge Pacific Coast Railway, which chiefly carried lumber to many Central Coast communities. A singular feature of the Depot Mall is its pub! Should you get thirsty hunting among the three rooms of antiques and vintage finds, you might find yourself wanting refreshment, and the pub has you covered! Rumored to be haunted, the Depot contains worlds of curiosities. One day you might stumble across an antique diving helmet, the next a fully operational vintage Coca Cola vending machine with a collection of original Coke bottles. Amongst many other things, the store has a large number of collectible items and dishes, vintage tool sets, and vintage jewelry and clothing. Hours of operation are 10 am to 5 pm daily. Check out this unique store/pub online at thedepotmall. com. Los Alamos Depot Mall: 515 Bell St, Los Alamos; (805) 344-3315

✺ The Junk Girls San Luis Obispo

Set up to feel more like an upscale home decor store, Junk Girls pairs old with new, the reimagined and repurposed at their shop in San Luis Obispo.

The Junk Girls are Jenny and Melissa. After 18 years of working for Netflix and eBay and others, they founded The Junk Girls in 2009. The Junk Girls was borne out of Art Therapy for Jenny, and Melissa’s love for all things handmade. They focus on creating art, lighting, furniture, jewelry and home décor, and as much as possible create everything using recycled, repurposed, vintage, antique, and found items in the USA. The women’s passion for giving found, vintage, and forgotten objects a new life and purpose is evident in their brightly lit store located in San Luis Obispo’s Historic Muzio’s Building. Hand-stamped jewelry made from repurposed cutlery and other metals is Jenny’s specialty. Hours are Monday to Thursday 10 am to 6 pm, Fridays 10 am to 8 pm, Saturday 10 am to 7 pm, and Sunday 11 am to 6 pm. Visit their website at junkgirls.com. Rich Man Poor Man is actually two stores located very close to each other amidst the Cambria pines. Joanna and Myles, the owners, bring a sense of fun to their vast premises, which feature countless different dealers and treasures of every sort. Dogs are welcome too! Within the store, look for the original Big John’s Man Cave. The self-styled home of “man-tiques,” it is filled with vintage oil cans, sports memorabilia, signs — both vintage metal and those made to look so — big belt buckles, toys, Coke pieces, an authentic Bob’s Big Boy restaurant display, and a lot more. Some dealers seek out and bring in antique musical instruments, and the store often has much intrigue there. Best described as a vintage jungle, patrons can roam for hours, stop for lunch at a nearby restaurant, and resume browsing afterwards. Hours are 10 am to 5 pm daily. Check them out online at richmanpoormanantiques.com. Rich Man Poor Man: 2110 and 2084 Main St, Cambria; (805) 203-5350

Why Visit the Santa Ynez Valley? In the Santa Ynez Valley, there are six picturesque, pedestrian-friendly towns, farmland as far as the eye can see, and welcoming locals. Pair that with grown-there world-class wines and dining, why are you at home reading this? It’s about two hours from the L.A. metro area and four from the Bay Area. There are other reasons to visit the heart of Santa Barbara County’s wine country. There’s a craft beer scene, as well as hiking, cycling, horseback riding, spas, shopping, gallery hopping, and lounging (as in lay around and do nothing). Ever wonder why the Santa Ynez Valley produces such wonderful wine? The secret ingredient is the Transverse Mountain ranges. They run east to west, allowing for more sunlight but cooler temperatures as the cool ocean breezes easily travel to the valley. Schedule ample time for wine tasting, because, guaranteed, it won’t be long enough.

• Ballard

Ballard’s pioneering spirit is alive and its charm well intact. Established in 1881, this hamlet is the smallest and oldest town in the Santa Ynez Valley. Sideways Fest

celebrates Santa Ynez Valley wines and the movie that made them famous Outdoor screening, tasting events, set locations tour highlight October weekend

Fifteen years ago, the sleeper hit Sideways catapulted the Santa Ynez Valley wine country into international fame. Today, not so much an aged-toperfection film, Sideways is a cult classic that never goes out of style. To toast the movie’s anniversary and the wines it made famous, the Sta. Rita Hills Wine Alliance will hold Sideways Fest from Oct. 18 through 20. “We are excited to produce an event that embraces the energy of and celebrates everything Sideways. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy the wines and locations of the movie, and still have time to visit our tasting rooms and explore our backroads,” notes Barbara Satterfield, Executive Director for the Sta. Rita Hills Wine Alliance and long-time employee of the Hitching Post II Restaurant. 94

Fall 2019

Sideways Fest kicks off with a Friday night Sideways screening at the outdoor Solvang Festival Theater, a panel discussion with individuals involved in the film’s production, and a de rigueur wine tasting. Viewing the film isn’t necessary to enjoy the weekend fully. But it will, however, enhance the experience. Just in case you haven’t seen the movie, or it has been a while, here’s a synopsis: Debuting in 2004 and filmed on location, Sideways is the adaption of Rex Pickett’s novel of the same title. The story focuses on two men in their 40s, Miles Raymond and Jack Cole, who visit the Santa Ynez Valley wine country for a week-long, two-man bachelor party in honor of Jack’s upcoming nuptials. They meet two local women, taste a lot of wine, and … The movie stars Paul california101guide.com

Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, Virginia Madsen, and Sandra Oh. First-time viewers will want to pay close attention to location shots, as Saturday’s morning bus tour will retrace Jack’s and Miles’ trek. For example, the hotel where they stayed (the one with the big windmill off Highway 101), the then-Sanford Tasting Room, and the Hitching Post II Restaurant with its famous in-house Highliner Pinot Noir. Saturday’s schedule includes time for a self-guided tour of Solvang, the Danish Capital of America. Frank Ostini, owner of the Hitching Post II Restaurant, recalls, “Sideways brought well-deserved international attention to the wines and the beauty of Santa Barbara Wine Country. We said Sideways would come and go, and we’d be here for the next 50 years. Turns out Sideways will outlive all of us and be viewed by wine lovers forever. Now we say with pleasure, ‘Sideways forever!’” The festival will hit fever pitch on Sunday at Buellton’s River View Park where a gathering of Sta. Rita Hills wineries will pour their Pinot Noirs, and other Santa Ynez Valley wine producers will join them. There will also be a special Merlot tasting. (The currently muchmaligned Merlot is thanks to a scene from the movie california101guide.com

depicting the varietal in an unflattering light, which caused sales to plummet.) Other activities are a Sideways Saab photo booth, a Food Truck court, and live music, among other celebratory happenings. “No one had any idea the impact Sideways would have on the Santa Ynez Valley. Not a night goes by at the restaurant that someone doesn’t ask about the movie or come in to get their picture taken in the bar, even after 15 years! People come from all over the world to experience the Sideways adventure and drink Pinot Noir,” explains Satterfield. “More importantly, it alerted Southern Californians that there is a beautiful wine region just a few hours away. People come to visit two or three times a year to enjoy.” Coinciding with harvest, Sideways Fest is the perfect time and place to visit and enjoy the Santa Ynez Valley wine region. Well, any time is a perfect time in the region, just as any time is the right time for a fine glass of wine from the Santa Ynez Valley, whether it be Pinot Noir or Merlot. For details and tickets to all the Sideways Fest events, visit www.idewaysfest.com. To learn more about the Sta. Rita Hills Wine Alliance, visit www.staritahills.com or email info@staritahills.com. Cambria Pines Nursery is fun to explore all year, but is completely transformed during their Christmas Market.

Cambria is calling By Jessica Frakes

If you grew up in the diverse state of California, you have likely been on many road trips. What makes California so great for road trips is that, although it is undoubtedly associated with the beach, you can go from desert, to mountain, to forest, to beach all in the span of a day. And sometimes, in certain magical places, these very different landscapes merge. The beach and palm trees go hand in hand, of course, but what about the beach and pine trees? It’s something you may imagine in cooler climates like those in the Pacific Northwest; however, on California’s Central Coast, there is a special little seaside town in the middle of a pine forest, one that seems to spring up out of nowhere. The

town of Cambria doesn’t just sit in any forest, either; it inhabits one of only three native Monterey Pine Forests in California. Coming from the south, you’ll pass through cute beach towns like Morro Bay and Pismo Beach before hitting Cambria. When I think of Cambria, I divide it into three distinct areas even though it is a fairly small town, at 8.5 square miles. On one side of Highway 1, you’ll find the famous Moonstone Beach Drive, where all the ocean-view hotels are located, along with a boardwalk and some great restaurants. There are also sleepy neighborhoods — a few of which still have unpaved roads — scattered with wooded trails. On the opposite side of the highway you’ll find downtown Cambria, which is divided into two villages: the historic East Village and the West Village. The fall season is the best time to visit Cambria, according to locals. The summer fog has lifted, and the days are still warm.

Since 2009, Cambria has been home to the annual Scarecrow Festival. Moonstone Beach at sunset — does it get any better than this?

My favorite winter event in Cambria is the Holiday Christmas Market hosted by the Cambria Pines Lodge and Nursery. Every year from Nov. 29 to Dec. 23 you can come see the beautiful light displays, listen to music, shop in the vendor market, and eat some traditional German fare. They outdo themselves every year, and are even being featured on ABC’s “The Great Christmas Light Fight” this season. I love walking through the light tunnel, and the kids love it even more! walks. Visit www.ffrpcambria.org. Perhaps the best place in Cambria to take a seaside stroll is on Moonstone Beach’s boardwalk. You can access the 1.25-mile boardwalk anywhere from Moonstone Beach Drive. The beach below is beautiful any time of day, but especially at sunset! I love walking Moonstone Beach in search of moonstones, rocks, and sea glass. Fun fact: Cambria is known for its moonstones, but they are

In January, Cambria hosts its annual Art and Wine Festival. Winery and artist participants are all San Luis Obispo County locals. You can read more about it in our festivals feature, or check out their website www.ambriaartwine.org.

Other things to do in Cambria • Take a stroll Local artist Patrick Dennis says the best things to see in Cambria and the surrounding areas are outdoors. San Simeon Cove and San Simeon Pier, across from Hearst Castle, is a local favorite. My husband and I love to fish the pier, and have seen several whales there. Fiscalini Ranch Preserve is one of those places that cannot be missed when visiting Cambria. The Preserve offers spectacular views from a mile-long ridge of ocean bluffs — a perfect spot for catching glimpses of wildlife including whales, birds, and sea otters. not what you would typically classify as moonstones. They are actually a type of clear quartz.

• Feast! If you’re anything like me, the best part of any trip is the food, and luckily, Cambria has some great restaurants. I’ve been to quite a few, but still have a couple on my list I’d like to try. Here are some of my favorites (so far).

source much of their food from local ranches and farms, including their own farm on Santa Rosa Creek Road, which you can also visit! • Wander around Downtown There are so many great shops, galleries, and antique stores in each village that you could spend the entire day just wandering downtown.

Robin’s, located on Burton Drive in the East Village, has a lovely covered outdoor dining area. You feel like you’re sitting in a little garden. Sometimes I come here just for a cup of their salmon bisque.

If you’re into antiquing, check out Rich Man Poor Man Antique Mall in the East Village. My husband and I have spent so much time in this shop that we get what we like to call “junk drunk!”

Another favorite is Sea Chest Restaurant located on Moonstone Beach Drive. If you decide on dining here, note that they do not take reservations. Without fail, there will be a line in the parking lot 30 minutes before the doors open for dinner, so arrive early. Fortunately, if you do have to wait, you can grab a glass of wine at the bar, sit by the fire pit, and enjoy a spectacular ocean view. Everything I’ve ordered here is delicious, but my favorite thing on the menu has to be their calamari strips.

Looking for some jewelry? Stop into Bronze, Silver & Gold Gallery. At one time they were located in the East Village, but they now reside in the West. They are always very nice, and I even received a hug last time I was there! I purchased a Cambria moonstone pendant from Bronze, Silver & Gold that reminds me of Cambria every time I wear it. Also, check out Casa De Oro on Burton Drive. They specialize in unique stones and custom, one-of a-kind jewelry.

You cannot visit Cambria without visiting one of Linn’s shops or restaurants. Linn’s is known for its baked goods and the Olallieberry. If you find something that you really love at Linn’s, you can order it from their gourmet catalogue. I am especially fond of their jams, jammy muffins, and pies! They

shops is to bring the inside and outside together, mix the old with the new, and to make people feel welcome and relaxed.

I love art so much that when my husband and I went to Italy, we visited 27 museums in a 12-day period. Now that is probably a bit much for most people, but local art really does tell a story about a place, so if you have a

chance to visit even one gallery while you’re in Cambria, you should! I recommend checking out Patrick Gallery, in particular, which functions both as gallery and studio for Patrick Dennis’ art. His oil paintings are mostly local landscapes, but not your typical landscapes. Patrick’s work begins with a sketch of an identifiable location, but evolves through a process of what he describes as excavation with paint to intentionally remove details, creating beautifully abstract and colorful landscapes. If that isn’t enough to convince you, he has an extremely sweet and fluffy dog who hangs out in the gallery. You can read more about Patrick Dennis, his gallery, and upcoming shows on his website, www.patrickgallery.com.

Why not throw your fishing poles in the car and try to catch your dinner? Maybe some surf perch?

• Take a drive

Cambria is calling

One of my favorite things to do in a new place is take a scenic drive. I recommend taking Santa Rosa Creek Road from downtown Cambria to Old Creek Road to Whale Rock Reservoir in Cayucos, and then work your way back. You’ll find Linn’s Farmstore on the way, where you can peruse the aisles for jams and snacks before getting back on the road. I usually end up with a bag of their decadent and crunchy churro bites! If you want a more lengthy drive and don’t mind the windy road, you can take a day trip up the coast. I almost never visit Cambria without taking a drive up Highway 1 to marvel at Big Sur’s rocky and breathtaking coastline. • Fish If the conditions are right, and you enjoy some casual 102

fishing, I highly recommend grabbing a fishing pole and making your way to Moonstone Beach just before sunset. I had the best time fishing for surf perch one evening before dinner, and I am not much of an angler! On this particular occasion, I caught a fish almost every time I made a cast. The best bait for this is a plastic sandworm, and you can pick some up at the tackle shop in San Simeon. There are so many things to do and see in Cambria that I couldn’t cover them all, but part of what makes a place memorable is discovering, for yourself, the things that make it special. The sweet seaside village of Cambria is one of those places I visit over and over again. Of course, there are those spots I like to check out every trip, like Moonstone Beach, but I try to see or do something different each time. Cambria is such a unique town to California’s Central Coast that it definitely should not be missed! california101guide.com

Hearst Castle

®

From the highway, it looks like a small Mediterranean village, perched 1600 feet above sea level. It is not. Central California’s rugged coastal beauty makes a fitting backdrop for Hearst Castle®, once the hilltop estate of newspaper publisher, film producer, and art collector William Randolph Hearst. Operated by California State Parks as a historic house museum, Hearst Castle® offers visitors the opportunity to investigate the lavish grounds and buildings designed by architect Julia Morgan in the 28-year collaboration with William Randolph Hearst that began in 1919. A large main house, Casa Grande, and three smaller guest houses are linked by a network of terraces and flower- and shrublined pathways through a garden large enough to be measured in acres. Fine and decorative arts are evident in virtually every room of every building, can be found throughout the gardens, and even embellish the two classically-inspired swimming pools. Interesting juxtapositions highlight the diversity of the predominantly

Renaissance Italian and Spanish art collection. A painted portrait hangs beside a clerical vestment, a white marble neoclassical sculpture stands next to a Roman mosaic floor, and a frosted Lalique bottle shares the room with an ancient Egyptian carving. Through the talents and efforts of Morgan and Hearst, dramatically different elements came together to produce a unified whole. The abundance of household items including chairs, chests, lamps, and rugs reminds visitors that this was once a home, where the objects, although antique, were actually meant to be used. Architectural elements such as fireplace mantels, choirstalls, and carved stone window frames were installed in the buildings, reassembled to create a setting where art was incorporated into the very fabric of the rooms. It was in those rooms – 165 in all – as well as in Hearst Castle’s® gardens, grounds, pools, and riding paths, that Mr. Hearst

entertained his guests, who included Hollywood stars, literary notables, athletes, politicians, and other celebrities. For decades, a visit to Hearst Castle® was by invitation only. Now all it requires is a tour reservation. 750 Hearst Castle Road, San Simeon (800) 444-4445 or hearstcastle.com

Paso Robles is more than just a place – it’s an experience you’ll never forget. During the holidays here in Paso Robles, the Main Street festivities are a storybook way of celebrating the season. Major characters are Santa and Mrs. Claus, the Elves, the Snow Queen & King, the Grinch, and of course—everyone’s favorite crabby old man—Scrooge.

Where Everybody Comes Together PasoRoblesDowntown.org

The first chapter begins by meeting the Downtown merchants for the Holidays. They will be offering open house, refreshments, entertainment, drawings, and more on Elegant Evening Downtown November 16, 2019, from 5 to 8 pm. The second chapter occurs by tradition on the Friday after Thanksgiving, November 29, 2019, when Mrs. Claus arrives to approve the town’s preparations for Santa. Accompanied by Santa’s Elves, she walks to the City Park bandstand and throws the giant light switch as the clock tower tolls 6 p.m. All at once, festive lights illuminate the park trees, shop windows and buildings downtown! Naturally, the event is accompanied by speeches from local dignitaries, by candlelight caroling, hot chocolate. Free admission. If Mrs. Claus finds the town is suitably decorated for her spouse (which, it seems, she does without fail), she delivers a favorable report to the Jolly Old Santa himself. In the next chapter of the Paso Robles Main Street storybook (about one week later) during the spectacular Christmas Light Parade, Santa makes

his official entrance into the city in his beautiful sleigh with all the elves. This year, if all goes well at the North Pole, we hope to welcome St. Nick on Dec. 7th. The Light Parade starts at 7 p.m. Beginning on Sunday, Dec. 15th, Santa will be in residence at the Holiday House in the afternoons until Christmas Eve. Many downtown shops begin their holiday hours that day and stay open until 7 p.m. through Christmas. Children can bring St. Nick their Christmas wishes (Santa’s Hours posted on the Holiday House). Main Street has a hotline to Santa, so parents can always call the office (238-4103) or check the Holiday House to learn his schedule. The town’s storybook characters turn out en masse the Saturday after the parade for a big reunion on Vine Street. On Dec. 14th, from 6 to 9 p.m., the Vine Street Victorian Christmas Showcase offers everyone the chance to step back in time. We start the holidays with Elegant Evening Downtown and the Downtown Lighting Ceremony (See attached Calendar). December: Christmas Light Parade, Vine Street Victorian Christmas Showcase, and finally, the Victorian Teddy Bear Tea (see calendar).

Special downtown Paso Robles events

Community & traditions

If you’re looking to find out more about Paso Robles firsthand, the city hosts a variety of community events and traditions held throughout the calendar year including the annual Paso Robles Olive Festival, Pioneer Day, Mid-State Fair, Paso Robles Wine Festival, Vine Street Victorian Showcase and much more! Getting to know Paso Robles could take more than just one day, so be sure to come back on your next visit to find out what you can discover in paradise!

Ideally located

Paso Robles is ideally situated midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, and there’s reason that visitors return time and time again to experience more of what Paso Robles has to offer. Paso Robles is also within close proximity to a number of area attractions, with Highway 46 West acting as a gateway to the cool blue waters of the Pacific Ocean and whose coastline is home to the famous Hearst Castle in San Simeon, Calif., as well as other notable area attractions. 106

The SLO County Music Scene By Donna Wolfe San Luis Obispo County has it all — from sunshine to surf, endless recreational opportunities, a world-class wine region, fabulous breweries, great shopping and dining, respected places of learning and, not surprisingly, a thriving local music scene. The county is bordered to the west by coastal ocean views and lined with the gentle rolling mountains heading east. Located about halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco along U.S. Highway 101, “SLO County” is home to a musical community that covers all genres and features a variety of fun venues. Here are some of the area’s most well-known and favorite spots:

• The Pour House Paso Robles Paso Robles is conveniently situated just off the 101, and features some great local talent in the land of amazing wines, craft beers, and distilleries. The Pour House venue embraces homegrown musical talent. Located on Pine Street near downtown Paso Robles, The Pour House has been a favorite local hangout since opening in 2009, and has been at its current location since 2012. The bar has 25 beers on tap, including a wide variety of ales, IPAs, porters and stouts, ciders, and sour and fruit beers. It is nestled in the outskirts of downtown Paso Robles, where you can find the heart of the music scene. The owner of The Pour House, Shawn Copen, offers a hometown Fall 2019

feel of great wines, craft beers, and talented local musicians. “The most amazing local musicians are right here in our area,’’ says Shawn. He hosts local musicians from across SLO County, as well as from San Francisco and Los Angeles. It “blew his mind” with all the talent that was performing in his venue. Shawn says that the beer scene in this area is not leaving, so The Pour House has a great menu of fine beers, wines, and great food. His friendly staff make you feel like you’re on the show Cheers. But it’s the music scene at Shawn’s place that has become central — there is music going on almost every night of the week! Local musicians love to play on Sundays where you will find bi-weekly Blues Jams with Rick Pittman, and on a special night, check out Truth About Seafood, a longtime favorite of the Central Coast. Another one to check out: the Carbon City Lights, a new upcoming alternative indie rock band based in San Luis Obispo. The local talent is pouring right into The Pour House! It sits along a natural estuary making it an amazing spot for animal aficionados, from bird watchers to sea mammal lovers. Surfers find awesome waves along Morro Rock, an extinct volcano jutting 500 feet into the sky. In this inviting coastal town you will find the newest musical venue called The Siren.
