POWERED BY ENERGYVAASA The Vaasa region is powered by the largest energy cluster in the Nordic countries. The annually organised Vaasa EnergyWeek is the place where companies, experts and decision-makers gather to network and do business. Once again Vaasa has the honour and pleasure of acting as the host for this top event. It can now be said that Vaasa has established itself as a prime cluster of energy industries, and locally produced products and solutions are exported all over the world from this region. We produce 30% of Finland’s total exports in energy technology, and several companies are global market leaders in their fields. As the world’s energy markets are facing inevitable change, renewable energy sources and new technologies are appropriate topics for discussion. Energy and environmental technology are becoming the driver of Finnish exports and the Vaasa region, with its versatile know-how, is ready to take on the challenge. Today Vaasa continues to invest in energy efficiency and innovations. The buses serving the city’s residents will soon run on biogas, the city has a new wind power farm, the latest smart grid technology is being piloted in one of the city’s residential areas and Vaasa is involved in the nationwide Innovative Cities

development programme. We utilise both ground heat from sediments on the seabed and energy generated at the local incineration plant.

THE VAASA REGION, WITH ITS VERSATILE KNOWHOW, IS READY TO TAKE ON THE CHALLENGE. Because we want to continue improving our city, Vaasa recently entered into the EU’s Covenant of Mayors initiative, through which we commit to fight against climate change and develop a more sustainable energy future for our city. The city has taken huge developmental strides, and the region’s dynamic business life has played a great role in this. The success of the companies has also spread out and generated multiple positive outcomes. The absolute strengths of the universities in Vaasa, for example, now cover the fields of business, energy

technology and languages. Experts in these fields can easily find a job in the region’s global companies that work closely together with the universities. Vaasa EnergyWeek demonstrates the power of cooperation in the Vaasa region. The success of such a professional event requires tremendous commitment and investment from all its organisers. Year after year the organisers and the region’s companies have proven that they can pull together towards a common goal. I wish everyone attending the event an enjoyable Vaasa EnergyWeek.

TOMAS HÄYRY Mayor, City of Vaasa

Monday March 16, 12:00-16:00

Vaasa City Hall (Senaatinkatu 1)

Energy & Environment Seminar EnergyWeek 2015 kicks off with two of the hottest topics the Finnish energy industry has to offer this spring. Learn why everyone is so pumped up on gas and how you can start producing energy on your very own backyard.

THEME I: THE GAS REVOLUTION IN TRANSPORTATION

PROGRAMME

The signs are everywhere – gas is one of the most important future substitutes for traditional fuel. Just look at the Ministry of Trade and Economics, investing heavily in new LNG terminals. It remains to be seen what effects the growing LNG network will have on the production and distribution of domestic bio gas.

12:00 Opening of the seminar

TOPICS COOKING ON THE GAS STOVE

• Infrastructure and supply: CEO Niko Ristikankare from Wega

How can we ensure that gas will be utilized in energy production? How can gas be quickly directed to transportation? How do we encourage consumers to shift to technology that utilizes gas? Will the LNG network speed up the production and distribution of biogas?

• European point of view: MEP Mrs Sirpa Pietikäinen

12.15 Theme I: Gas revolution in transportation Keynote speaker: Director, Technology Strategy Tomas Aminoff, Wärtsilä Expert panel Advisors

sell energy? Keynote speaker: Minister of the Environment Sanni Grahn-Laasonen • Technology representative, Smart Grids: Matti Vaattovaara • Technology and market representative: Kristian Heimonen

How can small-scale production become profitable for consumers? What kind of investments does the distribution grid require? Is small-scale production already possible? Is Finland ready? Top players from the industry meet the Minister of the Environment, Sanni Grahn-Laasonen, to discuss how public decisions influence the development of this heavily growing market in Finland.

All presentations and panel discussions will be held in English.

14.30 Theme II: Will it be possible for anyone to produce and

BIG QUESTIONS ON SMALL-SCALE PRODUCTION

Vaasa City Hall (Senaatinkatu 1)

• Legislation around LNG: Energy and capital markets counsel • Production of Biogas: CEO Leif Åkers from Stormossen

Guess what? Soon can private citizens produce and sell their own energy. Yes, that includes you! The key words are Smart Grids. In Germany a significant part of the total energy p roduction already comes from small-scale production and after many years of discussion words are turning into concrete projects in Finland as well.

University of Vaasa (Wolffintie 34)

Renewable Efficient Energy V WEDNESDAY: ENERGY GASES The second day of REE V deals with topics related to energy gases. Energy gas is the collective term for e.g. biogas, natural gas and hydrogen. They have a wide range of applications and can replace conventional fossil fuels in industry and power generation as well as in shipping and road traffic. By increasing both knowledge and the use of gas in energy production and transportation, it is possible to strengthen competitiveness and reduce the environmental impact.

The seminar is divided into three parts, all providing useful information for companies in the field as well as for researchers and politicians. Gas in various forms has for a long time been an important part of the energy sector and almost any forecast made nowadays points out that its importance will continue to increase. New reception terminals for LNG are being planned as well as a gas pipeline to the Baltic States.

Key Account Management

How should you prepare for a sales meeting? How will thorough preparations impact your customer? After this round table discussion you will know how to sell your products and services in a professional way. You will also learn how to use facts and feelings when creating good B2B or B2C relationships. A pinch of these “spices”, when used well, can turn any sales meeting to a success!

Successful negotiation results are all about good preparations. At this round table we will discuss typical questions that can arise prior to a negotiation (e.g. in order to verify the competitive landscape). Participants are also encouraged to share best practices and e xperiences, or negotiation problems and ways to overcome them.

How can partnerships benefit your company? This round table discussion will focus on the actions needed to increase sales and profi tability together with your most important customers. We will also discuss how a KAM program can improve the coordination of global customers, and how to share positive experiences and manage customer relations within your sales function.

Energy and Buildings Find out what we can expect from future solutions.

AUTOMATION AND HYBRID SOLUTIONS Thanks to global efforts all new constructions will soon be near-zero energy buildings. However, to reach that standard, several different energy sources must be used. This in turn creates new demands and challenges. In the future, hybrid solutions will become a must and, to make them function in an optimal manner, automated systems have to be developed. This is the main topic of this years Energy and Buildings seminar.

WHY? Buildings play an important part in our strife to cut down consumption of energy and CO2 emissions. Did you know that almost 40% of all energy use and CO2 emissions are connected to the built environment? This calls for actions on a global scale.
