Thekitchendresser,createdby ’tischlermeister’(mastercabinetmaker)
Numerous German cabinetmakers settled in this region from the mid 1800’s, bringing with them a style of furniture used in their homeland.
Carl Wilhelm Schaedel, a ‘tischlermeister’ or ‘master cabinetmaker’, arrived in South Australia from Brandenburg in 1856, settling in Nuriootpa.
By the 1870’s he had the means to build a substantial house with a large basement workshop, (pictured c 1890’s), which still stands in Nuriootpa’s main street.
Wilhelm produced a variety of Baltic pine and Australian red cedar furniture from the 1850’s to the 1890’s including wardrobes, kitchen cupboards, chests of drawers, tables and chairs.
Just as an artist would sign a painting, Wilhelm sometimes signed his furniture; also leaving an important date and place of manufacture. Occasionally one of Wilhelm’s artisan pieces comes to light, as did the pictured kitchen dresser It was during recent restoration that Schaedel’s signature as discovered, increasing its historical significance.
It’s important to keep the ‘story’ associated with any historic object. When researching the German family history of the dresser I came up with a great result. The owner’s grandfather’s wife had previously been married at Light Pass on 18th April 1891 – 13 days after Schaedel signed the dresser. This is significant.
We can assume that the dresser was a gift to the bridal couple, probably from one of the parents Furniture gifting was not unusual in the Barossa, to help a couple furnish their humble home. Schaedel wardrobes and dressers can be visually recognisable by their ‘scrolled’ top pediment. This became a ‘signature style’ and was also used by Wilhelm’s brother, Hermann, a cabinetmaker working further down Murray Street. The Schaedels and other local cabinetmakers have left a lasting legacy of collectable Germanic furniture

THEBAROSSA ARK/THE BAKEHAUS.
Built right next to Schaedel House was the cottage for the workman, and further back was the Bakehaus for the handcrafted furniture. These buildings still proudly stand in their place of origin and remain a special part of our community
Additionally, you'll find a relaxing outdoor community space being developed for all to appreciate, in which all these buildings overlook. In this courtyard an amazing mural has found its home. Painted by local artist Graham Smith in 2023, this is an absolute must see! These days, these spaces are utilised with an art gallery displaying local artwork and the Barossa Ark Bookshop This shop is independently run by volunteers from the wider Christian community within the Barossa The shop stocks a variety of handcrafted gifts, a great selection of books for adults and children, greeting and special occasion cards, photo frames, CD's, DVD's, and so much more!
Barossa Ark welcomes everyone into their place where ~ life is celebrated ~ faith is shared ~ grace is felt ~ questions are asked ~ stories are told ~ people are heard ~ hope is stirred ~ relationships refreshed ~ people are blessed.
Melissa Collins of Barossa Super Snaps in Nuriootpa recently celebrated 20 years of ownership of the shop! She kindly shared her story with us
Melissa and her husband Chris purchased Barossa Super Snaps in April 2004 Together with their 2 daughters they moved back to the Barossa from Adelaide Hills. Sadly, Chris passed away in September 2004 leaving Mel with a new business that she didn’t know much about. She got to work changing the process of developing photos from film and dark room development to digital printing, which at that time was quite a new way to develop photos.
Over the last 20 years she has seen the traditional cameras be replaced more & more by phone cameras, in which the shop has the facilities to print photos from both devices. Interestingly film photography has made a comeback and can often process up to 80 rolls in a month.
The shop has plenty of wall art, ready to hang frames and offers a custom frame service, and of course photo printing services.
The best part about Mel’s business has been the customers and the support from the Barossa community. Mel finds the to be a unique & very friendly community and says its the best place to live!! n, pop in to 35 Murray st Nuriootpa, and follow her page on socials to keep updated on her services.
Thanks Mel, cheers to another 20 years on Business.
