Photography as Its Own Metaphor: Four Series by Dezső Szabó

The exposure of the darkroom and the limits of light. Photogra­ phy and photographs in black and white. These expressions appear in the titles of series from recent years. Scaled is the last, Black & White was the first, with Exposed and Limits of Light in between. These terms, once familiar to photography professionals, abound in allusive options relating to the former scientific implications of the techniques applied. They also hint at fundamental photographic practices whose deep investiga­ tion may explain what a photograph actually is. Such an ap­ proach is quite peculiar in the contemporary art environment today, where “medium” is usually understood in a technolog­ ical sense, although this – at least as far as criticism goes – is far from exclusive or evident. In the contemporary art of the past five decades, photography has been present in widely di­ vergent ways. The first reason for this is the fact that photogra­ phy itself as a technique had exerted a decisive influence on the deconstruction of media as understood by Clement Green­ berg, who deemed it characteristic of modernity, leading to an increasing number of contemporary artists discovering the medial features of photography after the so-called “pictorial turn” and thus promoting it as an heir as well as resuscitator of an earlier category of painting, that of panel painting.1 In this process, photography embraced its own medial or, specifically, mediating status in the widest range of communication pro­ cedures, while also acknowledging that this had never been untouched: it questioned itself as a medium and embarked on a new trajectory. This, however, was synonymous with losing all its distinctive features separating it from the other arts, accord­ ing to Hans Belting.2 This delineated the environment in which the artists could enter into a dialogue with their devices, their cultural roles or status as images within a possible pictorial tax­ onomy, as well as reflect on the relevant aspects of their own creative practices. The materiality of analogue photographs, their qualities and functions in the production of pictures did not count as relevant propositions, let alone these qualities themselves.

It is the last two and a half decades of contemporary art that have allowed Dezső Szabó’s art to unfold so far as well as determined his thinking – whether in a positive or in a negative sense. After a brief abstract period, his early experiments in painting would focus on monochromy and led to the bound­ aries of painting, to a point where the picture as representation ceased to be the goal, theme, or objective, replaced by the object that was painted over, the object representing and car­ rying the image in its extreme and fundamental shape. What followed was a turn, an opening up towards a medium (tool, material, technique) that transcends the framework and bound­ aries of painting, enabling new questions, entering a new terrain of experimentation and experiencing. The “depictive” (objective, gegenständlich, figurative) pictures of this peri­ od were followed by the series of recent years, which have moved on from this apparently “traditional” toolkit and be­ gan questioning the image and its relation to the technique of production even more directly and more “immediately.”

Technique can here be understood both literally and in a more transferred meaning. 3 Consequently, the works so far can be approached from a variety of perspectives: from the problem-setting of the im­ age (a central concept in the cultural and art theory as well as philosophy of the 1980s and 90s); from the point of view of the medium;4 or from the relations between painting and pho­ tography as image-production techniques and picture per se.5 But there is one further possible vantage point, implied in part

by Dezső Szabó’s experimental art, toolkit, and personal inter­ ests themselves; namely, the relation between art and technol­ ogy as well as science. These aspects had already emerged in his early works in photography (photography as a picture-pro­ duction procedure itself belongs here, to begin with), but they were properly foregrounded only in the past few years, con­ cerning the method and the “operational chain” realized in the procedure.6 Dezső Szabó interrogates the image in a radical way, precluding all representation and re-representation; here

the picture as an object points solely at itself. Thus, technique has a merely “epochal” role, lacking all superfluous tools.

Although this technique is neither mechanical, nor mathe­ matical, it still predates as well as anticipates scientific ques­ tion-setting.7 Don Ihde proceeds along similar lines when he posits that technique is not a result of scientific thinking but rather the other way round: technique precedes science and becomes a tool for artistic creation and a catalyst for the chang­ es in the technique of creation before fundamentally altering a given paradigm of science.8 Art, on the other hand, inevita­ bly reflects on various technical procedures and processes, as well as on scientific achievements. Conversely, there comes a point9 where science confronts art and largely defines its future possibilities.

The relation of science and art occurs to Dezső Szabó along similar lines as to Renaissance artists, whose observa­ tions focused not only on the creation of an artwork but also on nature serving as its basis, thus approaching the way in which contemporary scientists considered their objects. Since the mid-1980s, the image has come to the centre of scientific debates and investigations in most divergent forms. Such in­ quiries into the image, although operating with the tools of art and yet delimiting and grasping the concept while reflecting on all objects encompassed by the concept itself, are dominant in Szabó’s early creative period. The problem of the image would not evaporate later on either; on the contrary, Dezső Szabó creates ever more extreme conditions in order to question and point out even more directly the issues that are potentially controversial, doubtful, and hence relevant and exciting. But scientific interest is present in his works in other ways as well.

This was one of the sources for his thematic choices in the late 1990s. The miniature representation of natural phenome­ na and natural disasters and, later, the recreation of the forces of nature (such as volcanic activity and lightning) in the studio were all based on scientific experiments or reached back to the results of previous scientific research.

The pictorial representation of nature and the problem of the image are seemingly difficult to link. But when one con­ siders the fact that the German Jesuit Athanasius Kircher’s Ars magna lucis et umbrae (1646) included a drawing that intro­ duced the camera obscura as a model for scientific observa­ tion and cognition, where cognition no longer aimed at the objects per se but at their representations (concepts, mental images, real images, etc.), the two do not appear to diverge so drastically. Observation and the contemplation of objects may not belong to the methodology of modern science, but in or­ der for the pictorial representation of these objects to become possible, they must, following the logic of photography, first be represented, that is, created as authentic copies or recreat­ ed as real objects on a smaller scale. Meanwhile, there is not a single moment when the tool mediating this representation and making it visible (that is, the photographically produced picture), should be relegated to the background.

The methodology of “artistic investigation” scarcely changes over the years. The “truth” of the image, the answer to the question of what a picture is (as painted versus photo­ graphed) is relentlessly sought by Dezső Szabó along the paths of heuristic experimentation, but never missing the toolkit of art, through the creation of artworks halfway between science, mythical thinking, and bricolage.10 The procedures of a doit-yourself person are reminiscent of those of an alchemist, though the latter, according to Marcel Mauss, still drew most of his results from systematic research using rational deductions based on scientific findings.11 Such seeking on the part of the do-it-yourself person creating the bricolage, such practices of recycling the “leftovers” of culture, such persistent experi­ mental efforts and heuristic routines are really characteristic of Dezső Szabó’s creative activities. These, along the arguments put forth by Lévi-Strauss and Mauss, thus incorporate and unify scientifically experimental, heuristic, do-it-yourself, and artistic-­ creative attitudes, which survey an extensive area of the most extreme options provided by technology.

Although such a creative attitude continues to dominate Dezső Szabó, the works of recent years are quite distinct from earlier series, nor merely because the visual paradigm of the image has undergone a profound change or because blackand-white analogue materials have been substituted for col­ our pictures. The image has lost its traditional photographic appearance and, to put it simply, become traces of light. Tech­ nically speaking, this is not a novelty. In the early phase of the development of photographic processes, almost all pioneers had taken these opportunities; for most, this meant the first, tentative steps forward. The 20th century all but rediscovered the opportunities ensuing from the abandonment of the cam­ era and the “pure” use of raw photo materials and light, filling the process with new meaning. French art historian Hubert Damisch proposed a new phenomenological approach where the image of light is produced and fixed without the use of the camera.12 Consequently, the two main agents are the light and the light-sensitive surface upon which the light leaves a trace, thus being fixed. But at least as much importance is attributed to the other components: the developer, the fixer, the emul­ sion carrying the light-sensitive substance on the paper. What distinguishes Dezső Szabó’s conceptual framework from that of early precursors is twofold. He is interested neither in the potential fixing of images alone, nor in the recognition of how a picture can be produced without the use of a camera.

His attention is focused on the tool and the material in their pure forms, as well as on the combinations of their inherent options, which ultimately lay the groundwork for what we call a photograph.

In the point of departure, we find geometric abstraction and monochrome painting, dating back to Szabó’s college years. Along with these, photography had also appeared ear­ ly on, but first only as a means of information gathering and tracking. Not much later, though, it came into the focus of his entire artistic activity, becoming a working device, a medium, a problem-setting, as well as a theme. In one sense, this is

“figurative” art; in another, we face the same considerations here as in the case of minimalist and monochrome painting.

In other words, the central issue is what constitutes what we consider a picture, what is a picture as artwork, as object, as communication tool, and what we “communicate” by using it, or even through it. A photograph, due to its fundamental na­ ture, hides from the spectator the possibility to address this question (contrary to the “object use” of minimal art). Here rep­ resentation, the seemingly evident presence of reality makes the image invisible. In the case of photography, the picture is produced through the gesture of framing. When framed, the world necessarily becomes a picture. Within the frame, everything turns into a picture, even if it does not have the features of a picture by default. This is due to promotion, to delineation, to presentation as a clear and distinct unit, which in­ evitably places whatever is within the frame into a new context, thus redefining it as such.

The tableau or panel picture format dominant in this peri­ od alludes to the origins in painting,13 stressing the importance of the object and contrasting it with the traditional, merely me­ diating function of photographic images; hence it becomes clear that “reference” no longer plays the central role here. It is not what the photograph shows but how it shows it (a pho­ tograph mediating information without making the being-how of the thing shown unambiguous) and how it can be seen (e.g. raw material and its physical properties).

In the High Voltage series, a new direction is percep­ tible. The Time Bomb series from 2008 had metaphorically represented the self-destructive process during which for­ mer aspects become invalid and artistic inspection focuses increasingly on various specificities of the image, further de­ composing the (photographic) picture. The “objective world” (formerly used model elements and their constructed environ­ ment as landscape) and its external potential to be recognized and identified as something through the reference to elements outside of the picture (the news media and their pictures and

visuals) had become secondary, insignificant, and gradually even vanished. In High Voltage, emphasis is laid far more on the form of already projected things, which is ever clearer and more abstract due to the lighting. The image of the object appears as the imprint of the object. The same year saw the creation of St. Elmo’s Fire, once again alluding to a natural phe­ nomenon akin to lightning, a corona discharge that had been observed on the masts of ships for centuries during storms at sea. Creating this light effect and using a model aeroplane are tools here, too, to establish “laboratory” circumstances in which Dezső Szabó may investigate the phenomenon, while making the sublime once again the object of artistic representation, though since the beginning of modernism in painting, it had been banished from the legitimate subject matter of art.14 St. Elmo’s Fire epitomizes the promotion of a new type of problem, insofar as the pictorial representation of a natural phenomenon, juxtaposed and contrasted in a matrix-like manner with the “panel picture” format already used before, becomes ornamental. Emphasis is increasingly shifted to the photographic use of material (of which a “unit of a photograph” is a part here), to what role it plays in the creation of what is seen, in the production of the picture. The next step follows logically, that is, the use of black-and-white raw materials and the increasingly “immediate” representation, which first becomes dominant in the Black and White series.

From this point onwards, the raw photo material and its features, behaviour, and function take centre stage in produc­ ing the picture. The camera loses its significance as the ageold imaging device that literally turns the world existing out­ side us into a picture, something to be grasped as an image.15 But not only in the sense that László Moholy-Nagy, for instance, attributed to photograms, considering them an autonomous form of optical shaping with its own laws,16 a light-formulating option where light is the creative component,17 and the process makes light visible in this very quality. For him, the main princi­ ple of image production consisted in the way light is revealed

in itself, in its pure form or through its reflection from objects or absorption in them. In contrast, Dezső Szabó’s series empha­ sizes the materials used in picture production, which of course include light itself. As opposed to Moholy-Nagy, Szabó is not primarily interested in the relations between dark and light, which merely provide tools in the process of production. It is the material itself through which the picture manifests itself as a picture, which is stressed above all else here.

The Exposed and The Limits of Light series clearly demonstrate this attitude. In the former one, this is all the more evident since light plays a subordinate role in contrast with the other constituents: the developer, the fixer, and the paper.

This train of thoughts is, to a certain extent, continued in Dezső Szabó’s latest series, where monochromy returns as well.

In photography, the material is always secondary compared to the visual perception; its function and significance consist merely in the degree to which it enables visual appearance to have as “perfect” an impact as possible. In this respect, it is a substantial tool of photographic processes. Matter itself, however, is hardly ever the object of theoretical contemplation.

Important as it is in the case of digital photography, such as the oeuvre of Thomas Ruff, in analogue work it remains indifferent.

In the American photography between the 1930s and 50s, raw materials may well have played an outstanding role; however, they were not treated independently but as tools similar to the painter’s brush and paint: focusing on what can be made from them and with them.

In some sense, monochrome painting is the extreme de­ gree of painting, where the most important questions pointing at the essence – the essence of painting – may be asked, to which any answer will by definition suspend all further contin­ uation. From this point of view, photography and the photo­ graphic picture prove to be devices enabling precisely such a continuation. Nevertheless, at length, Dezső Szabó would return to the original questions through which, at least in the case of camera-less photography, he would reach the final

frontiers of photography, clearly demonstrated by The Limits of Light, suggesting a vague and uncertain, scarcely visible but all too present boundary delimiting the potential territory of photography.

This, in turn, reveals an unambiguous link with his ear­ lier works, which were based on the insights gained in the area of monochrome painting, and which resurface in a rad­ ical, purified form here. From the outset, Dezső Szabó has been bugged by the extent to which photography differs from painting as a mode of picture production. At least as impor­ tant has been the question in what the differences and similar­ ities consist in the case of the object created. These inquiries transcend the problems involving the photographic image and focus rather on the (photographic) picture as an object. The image as trace or imprint is revealed unambiguously, remote from all traditional “depiction”; it illustrates (unintentionally, for sure) what Didi-Huberman formulated as the counter-model of the paradigm of the image.18 The cycles of recent years have thus touched on the problem of the image and, specifically, the photographically produced picture from three different directions. First, as trace and imprint, which, interestingly, appear as two-dimensional and reduced (colourless), complete with the mode of leaving a trace authentically photographic. The “gesture” of leaving a trace is essential; what leaves a trace and how; and what trace is thus produced in consequence, how it becomes a vis­ ually interpretable element – a light-image. Second, as the trin­ ity of chemicals, light, and carrier, where emphasis is laid on chemical substances rather than light itself; light is important (necessary for photography) but secondary (chemical paint­ ings). To the previous question, namely, what provides the basis of a photograph or light-image, here we get an answer gravitating towards the chemical components: the substances of developer, fixer, and emulsion. Their internal relations, the differences or combinations of the operational order of the el­ ements as decisive steps result in the divergent end results,

creating varying sights. Third, with light in the centre, with particular regard to how the changing/modification of light intensity may yield “tone value,” which is yet another such component of the photographic picture which generally plays a secondary, subordinate role. This although every black-andwhite picture (and this holds even for colour photography) is a system emerging from the interrelations of greyscale tones, whose internal structure constitutes the picture.

The light’s angle of incidence makes the photographic pa­ per and the structure of its surface “visible” as well. Interestingly, many photographers had realized as early as in the 1930s that side lighting might interpret given surfaces, providing them with a peculiar “material quality,” making their surface structure or “materiality” perceptible. In the case of photographic pa­ per, however, this remained uncharted territory.19 And there is one more aspect of photographic paper that gains new prom­ inence here, though it has long been a decisive factor when making gelatine-silver prints, due to the phenomenon of black portions as a result of exposure and developing, which may vary again and again, in keeping with the production proce­ dures (cold, warm, brownish, bluish hues, different from sol­ id black). This had also been common knowledge once, but nobody took real interest in how these divergent features of photographic paper may in themselves become essential, or even decisive, qualities resulting in the picture.

Dezső Szabó’s series have always addressed photogra­ phy itself, on top of all else. His four latest works, however, deal primarily with the image and the image alone, always created as photographic pictures. Considering his oeuvre so far, his prob­ lem-setting has shifted since his monochrome period insofar as the differences have intensified in the technique of picture production, in the procedures of photography and painting – taking technique literally, as a non-modern and modern term.

What is at stake is not a revival of a traditional dispute but the examination of how two different media may constitute what we can call an image. In the case of photography, this

peculiarity is not primarily discussed from the point of view of the concepts of index, icon, or symbol; nor through the use of materials; nor can it be grasped from any distinction between realism (reality’s imprint) and the imagination; nor, indeed, ap­ proached from the various modes of the “representation” of reality. What lies at its heart is literally the differences between the materials used and the ways they are applied, which are ultimately always summarized in the picture as artwork.
