GREATER EAST AURORA Whether you’re visiting from across the country, across the ocean or from just down the road, we welcome you. Those of us who make East Aurora and the nearby towns of Elma, Marilla, Wales, Holland and Colden our home are proud to say, “For shopping, sightseeing, dining, music or just relaxing, you’ve come to the right place.” We’ve got everything in our little corner of the world. The climate offers four distinct seasons, each with its own charm—summers never too hot and springs and autumns that are simply glorious. The scenery in southern Erie County is extraordinary, so much so that Aurora and Wales are on the Western New York Scenic Byway route. The hills roll on and on—sometimes gently, other times dramatically—through pasture, meadow and farmland, creating vistas that demand a photograph. The forests rise with stately conifers like pine, spruce and tamarack, and the elegant oak, maple, beech, cherry and sycamore are just waiting to put on their colorful show come fall. We are blessed with creeks like the Cazenovia and the Buffalo and their many tributaries and surrounding wetlands that teem with wildlife: well over one hundred species of birds from the majestic bald eagle to the dainty ruby-throated hummingbird and a bakers’ dozen of mammal species live in our midst. Nestled into this scenery is the Village of East Aurora. Rich in history but alive with promise for the future, East Aurora retains all the charm and integrity of an authentic village while still offering contemporary amenities for visitors. On the newly restored Roycroft Campus and at the elegant Roycroft Inn across Grove Street from the campus, you’ll learn about Elbert Hubbard and his Roycrofters, pioneers in the American Arts & Crafts movement at the turn of the last century. Take a tour, chat with artists in their studios, have a meal, stay the night—the Roycroft caters to visitors. For museum-goers there is the Elbert Hubbard Museum on Oakwood

Boasting one of the largest selections of bourbon, scotch and irish whiskey in Western New York, 189 Public House, located at 189 Main Street, also offers a signature spirit called 189 Reserve. Bar owner Clark Crook says that the bourbon is distilled in small batches in Davenport, Iowa and transported to 189 in the same oak barrel that it ages in. It is for consuming in-house only and is not available anywhere else. A serving is $10. Described as having a unique flavor profile, 189 Reserve has a clean, oaky flavor with a smooth finish that doesn’t burn. Also available at the bar are small batches of craft beer. 189 brews beer using a threebarrel system and like the bourbon, the craft beer that is offered there is a menu item that is not distributed. The beer is brewed using local hops that are grown a few miles away in Holland, NY and purchased directly from the farmer. The signature beer is called “Crook Outlaw Pale Ale” which is not overly hopped. 189 strives to make a drinkable beer that someone can easily have more than one of. With two storage tanks, the bar aims to have two craft beers available at all times. 189 Public House also offers a pub menu and regular live music. It is closed on Mondays and it opens at noon Tuesday through Sunday. Outdoor seating is available seasonally.
The East Aurora Pour House, circa 2016, is owned by Dan Ranger, who has operated the original Pour House in Hamburg since 2004. Ranger had been exploring the possibility of another Pour House and had his sights set on East Aurora when the venue at 701 Main Street with a beer tap system already in place became available. Whereas the Hamburg bar is more an old school tavern, he wanted to explore the food side of things while keeping a neighborhood tavern feel where everyone can feel at home, and everyone feels like a local. The menu, put together by chef Alex Cross of Ellicottville, features innovative daily specials and pub favorites like flatbreads, wraps, salads, burgers, wings and a Friday fish fry. All of the soups are homemade and the Pour House smokes its own meat. Local ingredients are used whenever possible. Twenty-three offerings are on tap, from craft beers like Hamburg, Big Ditch, Ellicottville, Ommegang, Otter Creek, and a rotating selection from neighbor 42 North. Favorite imports like Stella and Guinness can be ordered and so can Canadian import standby’s like Labatt and Molson. Happy hour runs from noon to 6 p.m. every day with drink discounts, and there are specials on game days. The Pour House has been a welcome addition to the village of East Aurora, and it even further emphasizes that the village is a destination for beer connoisseurs. Since its opening in October 2015, 42 North’s parking lot and tasting room has often been filled with people and the staff has been busy keeping tap lines flowing and increasing production. Managing Partner, John Cimperman and his head brewers took the staff from the East Aurora Advertiser and Elma Review on a tour of the facility prior to the grand opening to look over the brewery and discuss future plans for growth. During that time he restated his thought that a craft town like East Aurora needed a craft brewery. “This is an arts and crafts community. The only thing it was missing was a craft brewery,” he said. The building, located next to the parking lot behind Vidler’s 5 & 10, has been several things over the years as it made its way to the latest incarnation. It has been a tire shop, archery center, gift and furniture store and was last an aquarium shop. “I hope we found the best use for it,” Cimperman said. Following 11 months of construction the building has been remodeled to incorporate refurbished wood and brick from the Richardson Complex in Buffalo along with beams and boards from a barn in Holland. The items were used in designing the bar, columns, floorboards and ceiling throughout the main tasting room. Some of the wood dates back to the 1780s, he said. The construction utilized many local talents, such as Urban Design, Jay Metzger Construction, Visual Impact Signs and artists like Tom Bojanowski. Cimperman hopes to continue the local relationship with area

Avenue, the Aurora Historical Museum at the Town Hall and the Millard Fillmore House Museum, where our 13th president once lived. You can walk the length of an unhurried Main Street in an afternoon along spacious sidewalks, enjoying one of a kind shops, including the world famous Vidler’s 5 & 10. You can detour onto one of the tree-lined streets, or enjoy parks on the east end of the village: Sinking Ponds Nature Sanctuary and Major’s Park, on the west end of the village: Knox Farm State Park, or in the middle: Hamlin Park. If you get hungry while you’re here, don’t despair; East Aurora has more than three dozen eateries with new ones opening all the time. There’s everything from fast food to fine dining, from pub fare to gourmet to international cuisine. After dinner, check out East Aurora’s music venues where something is always happening. Overnighters can stay at the Roycroft Inn, the Hampton Inn, the Graystone Apartments on Olean Road or at one of several B&Bs.

COMES TO EAST AURORA Businesses and landscapes around East Aurora have been the backdrop for movies over the last few years. The Buffalo Niagara Film Commission and the Greater East Aurora Chamber of Commerce have been working together to help promote interesting spots in the village that might serve as a good setting for films. The efforts are seen as a way to bring in a large group of non-residents who will also patronize local businesses. “This does help to create jobs and promote the area while acting as an economic engine,” Chamber Executive Director Gary Grote said. Buffalo Niagara Film Director of Operations Rich Wall said they have been actively marketing the entire region on a national basis, and they have found some people interested in using settings around East Aurora for the films. The first movie, “A Prince for Christmas” brought in a 35 member movie crew that stayed in East Aurora and worked during the winter of 2015. The production involved a lot of community effort, and Grote said cooperation between citizens, businesses and the production team was stellar. Interested locals were cast as extras, and more than 150 Aurorans appeared in the film.
“I think they felt very positive about the reception they received here,” Grote said. The Chamber of Commerce coordinated communication between its members, the Village and the production company, spearheading the redecoration efforts that gave the film its holiday atmosphere and collecting information from those interested in participating as extras. A movie titled “Diary of a Lunatic,” is scheduled to begin full production in May, and the 20 person crew was here a few months ago going over details at the Roycroft Inn. On Saturday, June 11, the Village of East Aurora will once again become a giant concert venue when 33 local, national and international acts playing every genre from rock to jazz to reggae will set up at 10 venues from 4 in the afternoon until midnight. A $10 pre-sale wristband ($15 on the day of the Fest) gets you into all the venues: the Bar Bill Tent, East Aurora Pour House, 11th Frame, 42 North Brewing, The Healthy Zone Rink, 189 Public House, Riley St. Station, Roycroft Tent, VFW Post-East Aurora and Wallenwein’s. After visiting music fests in other communities a few years ago, the three East Aurorans realized that our village was perfect with many music venues in the village center and in walking distance from one another. With a strong committee and scores of dedicated volunteers on the scene and behind the scenes, the event took off and has gotten better each time. In the past three years, Music Fest has attracted more than 8,000 music lovers and raised $89,000 for local organizations. This year’s recipients are Aurora Adult Daycare Services, Aurora Ice Association, the Matthew Foster Foundation, and People & Places, Inc.

Knox Farm State Park
A Gem on the Edge of the Village
Every village should be so lucky as to have a 633-acre park right at its doorstep, the way East Aurora does with Knox Farm State Park. The park sits on gently rolling hills and creates the bucolic, pastoral northwestern entrance to the village. Miles of roads and wellkept trails wind through meadow, pasture, lawn and woods and are perfect for walkers, snowshoers, photographers, birdwatchers, dawdlers or anyone out for some peace and quiet in a tranquil setting. Bring your dog on a leash or take him to the spacious dog park where he can stretch his legs with a good run. In the North Wood, you’ll find the Little Free Library in the Woods, an enclosed bookcase designed by local artist Kateri Ewing where visitors are encouraged to take a book from the hundred or so inside, leave a
book or just sit and read on the benches surrounding the library. Knox Farm, or Ess Kay Farm as it was nicknamed in its heyday, was purchased from the Knox family by the state in 2000 after the death of the Knox brothers, Seymour III and Northrup. This signaled the end of an era of opulence and gentility, since the farm was for most of the 20th century the family estate of four generations of Knoxes, who were retailers, bankers, original owners of the Buff alo Sabres, and internationally respected polo players. Ess Kay was a farming concern, too, known for raising Black Angus cattle and employing a large staff who were housed in the red cottages around the perimeter of the farm. In the center of the farm on a knoll overlooking the countryside,
stands the 14,400-square foot, 32-room Knox Mansion, the summer home of the Buff alobased Knoxes. The tradition of entertainment, begun by the Knoxes, lives on, with the Mansion now available to rent for weddings

and corporate functions. Below the house is the 36-stall stable where the Knoxes kept their polo ponies and boarded horses. At the visitors’ entrance to the farm are cattle, dairy and poultry barns as well as the farm office. Three ponds attract waterfowl and the former polo fields on Knox Road now attract hundred of young soccer players. In the mid-2000s, New York State attempted to close the park as a cost-cutting move. That touched off a ground swell of grass roots opposition by the thousands who loved and used the park. The fledgling Friends of Knox Farm State Park, a non-profit group dedicated to preserving and maintaining the 633-acre gem, came to the fore during that Continued on Page 15
After much anticipation and years of organizing and hard work, the East Aurora Co-op Market opened its doors in June 2016. The store is located at 591 Main Street. The project has been managed by Sheila Conboy and she acknowledged in a recent press release that opening was a huge milestone for the owners. The community of East Aurora pulled together to make it happen by becoming memberowners, investing in the Co-op, volunteering time and talents, and remaining committed to the project. With it’s space-age employers the Greater East Aurora area is firmly in the present. But that doesn’t mean the past isn’t celebrated here. Through the work of local residents, an entire group of Arts & Crafts buildings as well as the President Millard Fillmore house have been designated National Landmarks. In the very center of East Aurora, next to the former Pennsylvania Railroad Station, on land that had been a concrete plant and most recently an apartment complex destroyed by fire, stands one of the busiest places in town, the HealthyZone Rink. For six months it attracts skaters of every ability. There are youth hockey leagues, adult hockey leagues, novice leagues, high school practices and games, pick-up shinny sessions, pond hockey tournaments, public skates, private parties, special events like Sled Hockey, and 24-hour fundraising hockey marathons. Ice time is perennially sold out. Parents and spectators now have a gorgeous, post and beam lodge with concessions, rest rooms, snack bar, equipment rentals and a warm place to see the action on the ice. And, this being East Aurora, there are over a dozen restaurants within a two-block radius. During the warm-weather months, you’ll find pickleball (the tennis-like craze that’s sweeping the nation) leagues, East Aurora Music Fest (June 11), lacrosse leagues, roller hockey leagues, private parties, and civic meetings. In only eight years, the rink has come from being a long shot to a focal point of activity in a busy village. The HealthyZone Rink, our Sheet of Dreams if you will, started with a simple question after the January 1, 2008, Winter Classic SabresPenguins outdoor game at Ralph Wilson Stadium. “Hey, what are they doing with that rink after
the game?” asked AIA founding member, John Cimperman. When the answer came back that most of the pieces were going to languish unused in a warehouse, a group of passionate skaters came together with a crazy idea. A crazy idea that energized a community. The non-profit Aurora Ice Association went to work, and by October of 2008, after volunteers had put in a summer of feverish labor preparing the site and assembling all the pieces, the Winter Classic rink had been reborn in a place some call, affectionately, Hockeyville. The ceremonial first faceoff, with dignitaries and most of the town on hand, took place on November 1, 2008, and the first skaters hit the ice in our open-air rink for a fivemonth season of hockey and free skating. Gradually, the Aurora Ice Association has made improvements to the facility: first came a permanent concrete pad, so the ice-making apparatus could stay in place all year and the rink could be used year round; then a soaring metal roof, a scoreboard, temporary changing facilities and warming huts—all paid for by local donations and creative fundraising. The Lodge opened in the fall of 2015. The last piece to the puzzle will be upgraded locker rooms with fundraising underway. You can see why the Aurora Ice Association’s motto is “A tribute to history. An asset for the region. A legacy for generations.”

Small Batch Brewing on Tap in East Aurora 42 North Brewing Co. (cont.) restaurants to serve beer by 42 North at their facilities or to host special dinners at the brewery. The name, 42 North, was chosen for several reasons, both historical and agricultural. The 42nd north parallel has been a dividing line in past conflicts around the world, but it also was once able to host the most hop production prior to prohibition. The main staff at the brewery consists of Clay Keel, the chief brewing officer who was a former head brewer in Florida; brewer, Naz Drebot, a native Ukrainian, currently contract brewing in Eastern Europe for 42 North; and Alex Sowyrda, an East Aurora graduate who is the chief recipe developer. Sowyrda developed most of the beer on tap at the brewery alongside Keel and Drebot. He has been homebrewing for the last 12 years, received a certificate
to become a beer judge and got to know Cimperman through mountain biking. Talking about homemade beer brought them together and now Sowyrda gets to produce hundreds of gallons of beer for other people with his recipes. “It’s pretty sweet to look up [at the beer signs] and see beer that I created is now on tap,” he said during the tour. There are six fermenters and each one can hold about 600 gallons.The demand has already been great and perspectives have been adjusted about what should be made for customers. “That’s the meaning of ‘craft.’ Everything is individualized, nothing is mass produced,” he said. He also pointed out a smaller brewing system to test out batches to adjust a recipe and style. The plan is to have eight variations of 42 North’s beer on tap, while allowing some space in the tap lines for beer from

other companies. Along with the main taproom and brewery, there is another room to hold private parties for community groups. Along with a large table, the room features a shuffleboard table, bubble hockey game and some other board
games around the building. When not closed for private parties the room is open to the public. Downstairs and outside from the tap room is an outdoor setting for visitors. Along with chairs and tables it features a large gas fire pit for heat.

The Town of Aurora was founded in 1818, fourteen years after the first settler Jabez Warren obtained a contract from the Holland Land Company for 1,443 acres and made it his family’s home in 1804. Previously Native Americans lived in the area. The town is 36 square miles with a current population of approximately 14,000, which includes the Village of East Aurora, the hamlets of Jewettville, Griffins Mills, West Falls and a portion of South Wales. One of the town’s earliest and most prominent settlers was a young Millard Fillmore, who came to Aurora in the early 1820’s to open the first law practice in town and build a home for his future wife Abigail. Twenty-seven years later, Millard Fillmore became President of the United States. The President’s home was moved twice: from its original location on Main Street to Millard Fillmore Place, and then in 1930 to its current location on Shearer Avenue. Today it is a National Historic Landmark and the only standing home built by a United States president. With the Hamlin and Jewett Farms, the latter of which included the world’s only mile-long indoor racetrack off Grover Road, Aurora became known as the horse-racing capital of the world in the late 1800’s.
The Village of East Aurora, founded 1804 and incorporated 1874, has a rich history that remains an integral part of its present-day character. Located just 25 miles from downtown Buffalo and 45 minutes from Niagara Falls, East Aurora has been home to interesting individuals, including U.S. President Millard Fillmore and Elbert Hubbard, the Roycroft Arts & Crafts movement and international companies, such as FisherPrice Toys. A walk down East Aurora’s bustling Main Street is, in some ways, a step back in time with a variety of specialty shops, restaurants, churches, municipal buildings and carefully preserved homes. Local museums and national historic sites provide direct links to East Aurora’s dynamic past. Fillmore, the nation’s 13th president, built the Millard Fillmore House on Shearer Avenue when he was a country lawyer in East Aurora. The Elbert Hubbard Museum on Oakwood Avenue features an extensive collection of Roycroft books and Arts & Crafts pieces. The birthplace of Fisher-Price Toys, East Aurora is a community that is passionate about children. FisherPrice’s international headquarters are located on Girard Avenue in the Village. A local nonprofit organization operates Explore & More...a children’s museum.

Colden was founded by Richard Buffum. He left Rhode Island with his children and some others to move west in order to find a new home. They carried everything in an ox cart, and some of the possessions they took with them are still in existence today. They settled in what is present day Colden. Buffum purchased 2,000 acres of land from the Holland Purchase Company. On April 2, 1828, the town was organized. It contained 22,704 acres and Silas Lewis was the first supervisor. The first post office was established in 1830 in Leander J. Robert’s house and was called Colden after Cadwalder D. Colden, who was a State Senator. Three years later, it was moved to Buffum’s Mills, and Buffum became postmaster. The post office kept the name Colden, and gradually, the settlement accepted the name. Buffum and James Bloomfield, a hired hand, built a grist mill, and the settlement there was then known as Buffum’s Mills. The mill was rebuilt twice and moved once. The first school was taught by Mary Eddy. Buffum and others then built houses farther away and built a road leading to them.
Established in 1818, the Town of Holland (pop. 3,612) is a rural and residential community in the center of the eastern edge of Erie County, NY. Holland prides itself on its charming, small-town atmosphere, its fine school system, and its rural friendliness. The town also offers several shops, offices, eateries, and a NASCAR racetrack. It is also home to the annual “Tulip Festival” held each May since 1956.

www.elmanewyork.com The Town of Elma, incorporated in April 1857, was split from the Towns of Aurora and Lancaster. Encompassing 36 square miles with two major waterways, the Buffalo Creek and Cazenovia Creek, Elma sits squarely in the center of Erie County and can safely call itself the Heart of Erie County. Over 11,317 residents call Elma home, as does Iroquois Central School, one of Western New York’s top rated school systems, and Elma Meadows Golf Course, one of Erie County’s top public courses. Residents enjoy spending time with their family and friends at two of Elma’s parks, the Elma Village Green and Creek Road Park. There are also athletic fields, a Senior Center, Town Museum, and Public Library. Elma has a vibrant business community anchored by large firms like Moog, Steuben Foods, and Servotronics. Its heart is a retail plaza in the center of Town, several restaurants scattered throughout the Town, and many small businesses that provide residents with a multitude of services. While farming has been the backbone of agriculture, horse farms are becoming more prevalent. Nurseries and greenhouse operations also provide great greenery and color, they also provide the stock for several larger nurseries in the area.
TOWN OF MARILLA
www.erie.gov/marilla The Town of Marilla is situated on the eastern edge of Erie County, New York, bordered by the Towns of Alden, Wales, Elma, Lancaster and Bennington (in Wyoming County). The town was named after Mrs. Marilla Rogers, an early resident who was a highly-regarded local schoolteacher. Prior to 1826, Marilla was part of the Buffalo Creek Indian Reservation. It became an official township in 1854. Its good soils, rolling terrain and open space make Marilla an ideal place to live and work. Although largely agricultural and rural in the past, Marilla has slowly become more urbanized as a result of shifting demographics. Agriculture and farming, however, are still very vibrant within the town. The population of Marilla is now about 5,700. Marilla boasts of four churches, one restaurant, two taverns, one country store, a town park, a primary school, a historical museum, a pavilion in the center of town and a library. During the summer, the town has a large Fireman’s Carnival, which is an important social and fundraising event in Marilla. The carnival provides entertainment for young and old, especially those who come from the surrounding area to take part and enjoy the festivities. The renowned Fireman’s Parade is especially noteworthy. They also have Memorial Day and Veterans Day Parades that are well attended. Also, don’t miss the huge annual Marilla car show held the 4th weekend in July.

The first settlers to stay came into Wales in 1804. They were descendants of Ethan Allen, a Revolutionary War hero. The next year, Jacob Turner, from Sheldon, settled nearby. Each year after this, a few more pioneers braved the wilderness and made homes for their families in the town. Wales is one of the earliest of the towns of Erie County. It was formed from Willink by State Law on April 15, 1818, while Erie County was still a part of Niagara County. As time went on, this huge town was divided into several smaller townships until Willink was left with only approximately 100 square miles. This now comprises the towns of Wales, Aurora, and Holland. In 1818, one of the towns so separated was the Town of Wales. The area, so named because its hills and green fields seemed to resemble the Wales of Britain, was an agricultural and dairying area.
