How To Earn A College Scholarship The cost of a college education continues to rise. The College Board says the average cost of tuition and fees for the 2015-2016 school year was $32,405 at private colleges, $9,410 for state residents at public colleges, and $23,893 for out-ofstate residents attending public universities. In 2013 and 2014, the average cost of a year’s tuition at a Canadian university was $5,772. The high cost of education compels many students to find ways to finance their education. For many, that means exploring available scholarships. Scholarships come in different forms and are usually offered to students as a gift to be put toward college or university costs. Some schools offer scholarships, while other scholarships are sponsored by outside organizations. Students who meet certain requirements may be eligible for scholarships. While academic or athletic skills are the first criteria associated with scholarships, they are not the only avenues by which students can pursue scholarships. Scholarships may be offered to students of certain ethnic groups; children of employees at particular companies; or to students who live in particular states. Local branches of organizations like the Rotary Club or Kiwanis also may give out scholarships.

To improve one’s odds of getting a scholarship, consider the following tips. • Get involved with the community. Many scholarship sponsors seek individuals who are committed to volunteerism. Plus, volunteering for various groups puts students in the path of information about scholarships from these organizations. • Use scholarship search engines. Those who search for scholarship sponsors

should find plenty of results if they peruse scholarship search engines such as Scholarships.com, CollegeBoard.com and FastWeb.com. • Check the local newspaper. The coupon section of the Sunday newspaper may feature scholarships, as might the classified section. This is a great resource for finding locally based scholarships. • Use networking contacts. Students should ask anyone they know if they are aware of any scholarship opportunities. Students who develop a rapport with guidance counselors or the financial aid department at their prospective colleges or universities may learn about scholarship opportunities that are not highly publicized. These people may have the inside track on scholarship information. • Apply for all available scholarships. Now is not the time for students to become lazy. Students should apply for as any scholarships for which they meet the eligibility requirements. Scholarships can help students offset the rising costs of a college education. Those who are willing to put in the research, time and effort to apply may find a wealth of scholarship opportunities at their disposal.

Be sure to check with local organizations for possible scholarship programs.

Buffalo State College Each year, more than 10,000 students choose Buffalo State College for its superb academic programs, applied learning opportunities, affordable tuition, and metropolitan location. Our students choose Buffalo State to pursue engagement, excellence, and social responsibility. Here are just a few of the amazing qualities you’ll find as a student at Buffalo State:

Broad Array of High-Quality Academic Programs

As the largest comprehensive “university college” in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, Buffalo State offers more than 165 undergraduate programs with 11 honors options, 18 post-baccalaureate teacher certification programs, and more than 65 opportunities for graduate study. At the same time, the college is recognized for its excellence in classroom teaching and scholarship and is known for its small class sizes—nearly 90 percent of all classes have fewer than 40 students. Buffalo State offers the perfect academic blend: small college learning environments coupled with large university opportunities.

Diverse and Creative Environment

Buffalo State is among the most diverse colleges in the SUNY system, a characteristic that’s reflected in the myriad of people, ideas, experiences, and program offerings found here. This diverse and creative environment fosters student growth and success.

Hands-on Learning Opportunities

Buffalo State takes advantage of its location in the second-largest city in New York State by offering extensive undergraduate research opportunities, internships, service-learning programs, and career development services that benefit students and the community. As a result, job possibilities for graduates are strong and varied.

Smart Educational Investment

Buffalo State is one of the most affordable universities—public or private—in New York and beyond and we offer financial aid to approximately 85 percent of our undergraduates, with an average award package of more than $10,000. Our graduates join a career network of more than 100,000 Buffalo State alumni (and more than 2.4 million SUNY alumni) living around the globe. A SUNY diploma has instant credibility wherever you go.

Engaged Urban Campus in Buffalo’s Elmwood Village

The campus is located on a 125-acre parcel in Buffalo’s museum district, adjacent to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and Delaware Park. The Elmwood Village neighborhood is lined with a vibrant mix of trendy cafés, restaurants, shops, and Victorianstyle housing. On campus, the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall, Burchfield Penney Art Center, Warren Enters Theatre, Czurles-Nelson Gallery, and Bacon Student Art Gallery place the arts and creativity right at students’ fingertips.

ECC: Start Here. Transfer Anywhere. With college costs skyrocketing, isn’t it time to build toward your ultimate graduation destination in an affordable way? Erie Community College (ECC) offers more than 100 career-focused certificate and degree programs in the areas of Business and Public Service, Health Sciences, Liberal Arts, and Engineering and Technologies, designed to not only advance students forward without drowning them in debt, but allows them to build toward a four-year degree in a sensible way. Consider the following: According to recent findings by the U.S. Department of Education’s College Affordability and Transparency Center, ECC’s average net price for full-time students is the lowest in New York State. Students can enter ECC, earn a two-degree in a variety of high-demand fields, or simply feel their way through their first college courses (at

$192 per credit) before deciding on an educational direction. Once ready, they can transfer their earned credits to one of many local colleges or universities like University at Buffalo, St. Bonaventure and Syracuse University, and enjoy their significant tuition savings en route to a four-year degree. How much can a student save by attending ECC before transferring elsewhere? Based on information from 2015-16 College Board’s Trends in College Pricing, annual tuition and fees at a public four-year college costs an average of $9,410; tuition at a private four-year runs an average of $32,405. Compare these numbers with time spent at ECC—taking the same classes offered at a traditional four-year—and you’ll see why our programs provide students with a great start toward a limitless future.

D’Youville Expands Healthcare Programs To Meet Demand D’Youville College continues to expand its impressive lineup of nationally known healthcare education programs with the recent addition of three new offerings to meet the needs of both the public and students. New programs include anatomy, public health, and sychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. A unique new program in anatomy, designed for both graduate and undergraduate students, allows grad students the opportunity to complete a master’s degree in just 12 month and, for new undergrad students, the opportunity to obtain both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in just five years. “This program is ideal for those with a bachelor’s degree who wish to apply to professional healthcare programs such as medical, dental, physician assistant or chiropractic,” said Dr. Marion Olivieri, Chair of Biology and Mathematics at D’Youville and director of this new program. “It’s also perfect for those students who are on a waiting list for entrance to such programs as it will enhance their credentials.” Those enrolled in this program can participate in D’Youville’s annual ItalianAmerican Conference on Human Anatomy, Research and Healthcare Professions. A new Public Health Program introduces students to a broad spectrum of public health careers in fields such as epidemiology, math, philosophy, sociology, statistics, research, and health service. “It is an ideal pre-health avenue for graduate level degrees or to enter the work force directly,” says Dr. Lisa Rafalson, chair

D’Youville’s New $20 million School of Arts, Sciences and Education Building Opened Fall 2015 of the Health Services Administration Department at D’Youville. “Public health offers job opportunities within federal and local governments, local departments of public health, community health, insurance companies and academia.” Rafalson noted the workforce in New York State as it relates to public health workers is insufficient. “There are 73 public health workers per 100,000 populations compared to 158 per 100,000 for the entire nation and 80 percent of the public health workforce nationwide lacks formal training in Public Health,” she said. Qualified high school applicants to the

How College Students Can Eat Healthy If asked to reflect on their college years, many graduates likely would not recall healthy eating habits. College students are often pressed for time and short on funds, so a nutritious diet is often sacrificed for the sake of convenience and cost. But a healthy diet can help college students handle the stresses of college life more effectively. The following are a handful of easy ways college students can improve their diets' nutritional value without breaking the bank. * Eat breakfast. College students tend to stay up late and sleep in, but sleeping in at the expense of a healthy breakfast can impact performance in the classroom and make students more likely to overeat later in the day. A bowl of cereal with some fresh fruit is not an especially expensive breakfast, but it can help college students start their day off on an energetic and healthy note. * Snack healthy. Many students find snacks are an integral part of hourslong study sessions. But trips to the vending machine for candy bars or potato chips won't add much nutritional value to your diet. Instead of being at the mercy of vending machines, bring healthy snacks along during study sessions. Fresh fruit, raw vegetables, Greek yogurt, and whole wheat crackers are just a few snacks that pack a more nutritious punch than traditional vending machine fare. Healthy snacks also tend to provide more energy, making it easier to endure late-night study sessions.

* Make pizza healthier. Pizza is a staple of many college students' diets, so it's likely unrealistic for them to quit pizza cold turkey, especially since there are ways to make pizza healthier. When ordering a pizza, college students can request their pizza be prepared with whole wheat dough, which is healthier than traditional pizza dough. In addition, ask for less cheese and more tomato sauce. Such alterations are simple and healthy without sacrificing taste. * Scale back on sugar. Sugar can cause weight gain without providing much in the way of nutrition. College students can cut back on their sugar intake by avoiding sugary beverages, including soda and drinks like sweetened iced tea or lemonade. College is also when many young men and women first start drinking coffee, which some people prefer to take with sugar. But students looking to keep weight off and reduce their sugar intake can choose to drink their coffee black or with just light cream or fat-free milk to ensure their morning cup of joe is not contributing to a bigger waistline. * Drink more water. The symptoms of dehydration mimic those of hunger, and college students might turn to snacks when all they really need is a glass of water. If you find yourself snacking shortly after eating a meal, then you might just need to drink more water. Few college students prioritize healthy eating habits. But there are some inexpensive ways for on-the-go students to enjoy healthy diets.

program are eligible for scholarships offering a 50 percent reduction in tuition and other scholarships are available for transfer students. In addition to a stand-alone bachelor’s degree program there is now a joint bachelor’s and master’s public health program available. A new Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in the Doctor of Nursing Practice program expands on what students have learned as an advanced practice registered nurse. They are prepared to assume leadership roles in mental healthcare, research, administration and education.

As access to healthcare increases, and the population ages, this special nurse practitioner is more widely recognized by the public as a source for primary healthcare. The demand for these individuals will continue to increase across the spectrum of healthcare services, according to the college. Applicants will need a bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited higher education institution, a master’s degree with specialty preparation as an advanced practice nurse, and a current license to practice professional nursing in New York State or Ontario. D’Youville has long been an international leader in healthcare starting with its four year nursing program established in 1942. A number of new programs were added over the years including occupational and physical therapy, dietetics, physician assistant, pharmacy and chiropractic.

Pittsburgh Bradford: Affordable for NY Students If you live in Erie County you can earn a degree from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and pay Pennsylvania tuition instead of the higher out-of-state tuition. Qualifying students from Erie, as well as Allegany, Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties, can pay the lower in-state tuition thanks to the Go Beyond NYS Award, which reduces the cost of tuition from $23,710 to $12,688. The award is available to new freshmen and transfer students who enroll full time in the fall. Additionally, students who already completed their first degree and wish to pursue a second degree on a full-time basis are eligible. Students can retain the award for four years by earning a cumulative GPA of 2.25 or better at the end of each spring term. The award applies only to spring and fall terms. “We hope our neighbors to the north will take advantage of this great opportunity,” said Dr. Livingston Alexander, PittBradford’s president. “These students will receive a quality education, and when they

graduate they will have earned a degree from the University of Pittsburgh, which is recognized worldwide and will help them, as it has helped our alumni, secure satisfying careers.” Many 2016 graduates have already found satisfying careers, including Thomas Neilly, a computer information systems and technology graduate who is an operations engineer at the Yahoo data center in Lockport; and Julian Joyner, a history/political science major who is an analyst for Goldman Sachs in Manhattan. Other 2016 graduates are enrolled in graduate school, including Joseph McIntyre, a biology graduate from Randolph who is attending Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine; and Kayla Mascaro, a chemistry major from Warren who is a doctoral student at the State University of New York’s University at Buffalo. Experience the Power of Niagara University Founded in 1856, Niagara University is a comprehensive institution, blending the best of a liberal arts and professional education, grounded in a values-based, Catholic tradition. Its colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education, and Hospitality and Tourism Management offer programs at the baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral level. With more than 80 majors, nearly 60 minors, six preprofessional options, and 4+1 combined master’s programs, NU students are immersed in meaningful realworld learning opportunities from the moment they step foot on campus. All four of the university's academic colleges have received the highest rankings from the top accreditation boards in their fields. As the first Vincentian university established in the United States, Niagara prepares students for personal and professional success while emphasizing service to the community in honor of St. Vincent de Paul. Whether it’s preparing income taxes for the elderly, tutoring urban elementary school students or conducting breast cancer research with professors, Niagara students strive to assist those less fortunate. Those types of real-world learning opportunities help Niagara alumni translate their practical education into top jobs within their career fields. According to a recent survey, 96 percent of NU alumni reported being employed or enrolled in graduate school within one year of graduation. Graduate students at Niagara are also prepared via outstanding academic pro-

grams that accentuate one-on-one learning with highly credentialed faculty. The NU approach to learning prepares individuals to excel in their career and to be change leaders in their chosen field. Niagara’s beautiful 160-acre campus, adjacent to the international border between the United States and Canada, overlooks the Niagara River Gorge, just four miles north of the world-famous waterfall. Niagara also continues to strengthen the financial aid packages that it offers to students, doing all that it can to help students attain a world-class education. COLLEGE TIP: Brace Yourself for Many New Things

Whether you’re going to the hometown college or heading across the country, college is a time of change. If you’re leaving home for the first time, it is especially different, with your parents not around to take care of things for you and give you advice, and no set of house rules to follow. But no matter who you are, college is a major life transition. You’re leaving the familiar and broaching the unfamiliar. You’re being exposed to many different types of people and ways of thinking, which changes how you view the world and yourself.
