GEMINA. Arte Contemporanea da Darmstadt, Logroño, Troyes

Meccaniche della Meraviglia da quindici anni ha mantenuta intatta la sua capacità di sorprendere lo spettatore: portare in luoghi inusuali installazioni di arte plastica da ambientarsi “meravigliosamente”, reinventando così sia l’opera stessa sia il contesto architettonico, urbanistico o paesaggistico che la accoglie.

Quest'anno, ancora una volta è il centro cittadino a fare da sfondo al progetto. Quattro luoghi emblematici della nostra città come Palazzo Averoldi, la Crociera di San Luca, l'ex Tribunale, ora Mo.Ca, e l’ex chiesa dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo, ora C.AR.M.E., vengono occupati dagli artisti, in un dialogo inedito e originale che infonde nuova energia agli uni e agli altri. Un processo di reinvenzione del patrimonio, una sfida per gli artisti, un “corto circuito temporale” per il visitatore, immerso in una simultanea scoperta di presente e passato.

Le quattro sedi di questa edizione 2018 hanno ognuna un proprio specifico carattere - proprio come gli artisti - e sanno sorprendere per motivi diversi, dalla monumentale bellezza degli affreschi di Palazzo Averoldi (con le opere di Laura Renna) all’austero recupero delle sale processuali dell’ex tribunale (che ospita invece Ruben Pang). Un accenno particolare merita però l’utilizzo estemporaneo della Crociera di San Luca (nei cui ambienti hanno trovato spazio le creazioni di Gabriele Picco), luogo caro ai bresciani, per il suo passato di palestra e di cinema, mai dimenticato anche se chiuso da circa 20 anni. E che per un’intera generazione si configura dunque come un inedito assoluto.

Una ulteriore novità di Meccaniche delle Meraviglie 12 è GEMINA, la sezione dedicata agli artisti provenienti dalle tre città europee gemellate con Brescia (Karwath+Todisko per Darmstadt, José Antonio Olarte per Logrono e Anna Madia per Troyes), sezione che ha trovato spazio a C.AR.M.E., nuova “culla” della cultura visiva contemporanea nata nel cuore del centro storico dalla reciproca collaborazione fra Comune e un gruppo di Associazioni e cittadini attivi.

Ancora una volta va sottolineata la poca vicinanza stilistica tra gli artisti presenti con le loro installazioni, distanti sia per età anagrafica che per scelte formali: una scelta voluta e dettata dalla volontà del curatore / regista di documentare come non esista un solo modo per esprimere, attraverso l'arte, le proprie forme di pensiero, e che anzi ogni ispirazione sa ricercare e trovare, autonomamente, la propria espressione artistica.

Meccaniche della Meraviglia, for fifteen years, has kept intact its ability to surprise the visitor: to take in unusual places installations of plastic art to be acclimatized “wonderfully”, as to reinvent both the artwork and the architectural, urbanistic or landscaping context.

This year, once more, it is the city center to be the background of the project. Four emblematic places of our City such as Palazzo Averoldi, the San Luca Cruise, the former Court, that is now Mo.Ca., and the former church of Santi Filippo e Giacomo, now C.AR.M.E., are occupied by the artists, in an inedited and original dialogue that instills new energy to one and the other. A process of reinvention of the heritage, a challenge for the artists, a “temporal short circuit” for the visitor, immersed in a simultaneous discovery of the present and the past.

The four venues of this edition 2018 have a specific character - such as the artists - and they know how to surprise for different reasons, from the monumental beauty of the Palazzo Averoldi’s frescoes (with the works of Laura Renna) to the austere recovery of the court rooms of the former Court (which houses instead Ruben Pang). A particular mention however deserves the extemporaneous use of the San Luca Cruise (in which ambients have found space the creations of Gabriele Picco), place dear to the people of Brescia, for his past as a gym and a cinema, never forgot even if it has been closed for about twenty years. And that for an entire generation is therefore configured as an unprecedented absolute.

A further novelty of Meccaniche della Meraviglia 12 is GEMINA, the section dedicated to the artists coming from the three European twin cities of Brescia (Karwath+Todisko for Darmstadt, José Antonio Olarte for Logroño and Anna Madia for Troyes), section that have found space in C.AR.M.E., new “cot” of the visual contemporary art born in the city center heart from the mutual collaboration between the Municipality and a group of active Associations and citizens.

Once more, it must be emphasized the little stylistic closeness between the artists and their installations, far for the chronological age but also for the formal choices: a choice due and dictated by the will of the curator / director to document how there is no single way to express, through art, their own forms of thought, and that indeed every inspiration knows to research and find, independently, its own artistic expression

“La gente che cerca significati simbolici è incapace di cogliere la poesia e il mistero intrinseci all’immagine” René Magritte La tecnica del collage, l’arte di assemblare frammenti di immagini preesistenti in modo da far nascere una nuova immagine, è la più importante innovazione artistica del ‘900, così, come in campo musicale, l’improvvisazione della musica jazz che partendo da una melodia esistente la modifica e la trasforma.

Il nostro intento registico, in questa dodicesima edizione di Meccaniche della Meraviglia, come in tutte le precedenti, vuole proprio sottolineare questo atteggiamento mentale trasportandolo nella terza dimensione dello spazio ambientale.

Il problema non è ciò che si guarda ma ciò che si vede. Quindi dobbiamo provare ad instillare negli occhi dello spettatore quella particolare capacità metafisica che De Chirico paragonava alla “chiaroveggenza”.

Unendo due elementi che a prima vista non sembrano avere nessuna attinenza, come la parola Meccanica e la parola Meraviglia, creiamo un’eterotopia, il campo della poesia tanto caro a Borges, cioè, un luogo dove le cose improbabili s’incontrano. E proprio attraverso questo meccanismo eterotopico della “duplice entrata”, ovvero, sottolineando la medesima importanza tra luogo che la ospita e opera che ingloba in se stessa lo spazio, si vuole garantire la cattura dello spettatore nella maniera in cui il solo spazio o la sola opera non ne sono capaci.

Gli spazi architettonici, pieni della loro storia, e le installazioni che gli artisti hanno appositamente pensato per quegli spazi, tentano lo spettatore in due direzioni opposte. La prima porta a guardare ed ammirare l’eleganza e le altre caratteristiche visive della composizione; la seconda a creare storie attorno a quanto stiamo vedendo. L’occhio e la lingua sono in contrasto tra di loro ma né uno né l’altro restano da soli. Solo mescolandosi danno vita alla terza immagine.

Questo spaesamento dello sguardo, vuol creare l’abitudine a cambiare il punto di vista, ad uscire dallo stereotipo a vedere le cose nella loro essenza.

L’opera, che si presenta come una cosa sola con lo spazio reale che la contiene, obbliga chi la guarda a entrare in contatto fisico con la realtà e dunque con l’opera stessa. Questo permette di abolire quelle barriere di scetticismo che oltre un secolo di avanguardie hanno contribuito a costruire creando un sempre maggior distacco tra cultura artistica e società civile.

La collaborazione con le città Gemellate di Darmstadt, Logroño e Troyes in dialogo, oltre che con la città, anche con la rinnovata sede della sala espositiva dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo oggi C.AR.M.E. e con l’omonima associazione che la gestisce, ha contribuito a rendere ancora più internazionale il programma della dodicesima edizione di Meccaniche della Meraviglia di cui il progetto GEMINA che qui presentiamo fa parte a tutti gli effetti.

“People who look for symbolic meaning fail to grasp the inherent poetry and mystery intrinsic of the images" René Magritte The technique of collage, the art of assembling fragments of preexistent images in order to give birth to a new image, is the most important artistic innovation of the Twentieth century, so, as in the musical field, the improvisation of jazz music that, starting from an existent melody, modifies and transforms it.

Our directorial intent, in this twelfth edition of Meccaniche della Meraviglia, as in the previous ones, wants to underline this mental attitude transporting it in the third dimension of the space environment.

The problem is not what you look at but what you see. So we have to try to instill in the eyes of the visitor that particular metaphysic capability that De Chirico compared to “clairvoyance”.

Combining two elements that at first sight do not seem to have any relevancy, as the word Mechanics and the word Wonder, we create a heterotopy, the poetry field so dear to Borges, that is, a place where the unlikely things meet. And just trough this heterotopic mechanism of the “double entry”, that is subtitling the same importance between the space that hosts it and the artwork that incorporates in itself the space, we want to guarantee the capture of the visitor in the way that only the space or the artwork alone are not capable of it.

The architectural spaces, full of their stories, and the installations that the artists have specially thought for those spaces, tempt the visitor in two opposite directions. The first door to look and admire the elegance, and the other visive characteristics of the composition; the second to create stories around what we are seeing. The eye and the tongue are in contrast between them but neither one nor the other remain alone. Only mixing up, they give birth to the third image.

This disorientation of the look wants to create the habit to change the point of view, to go out of the stereotype, to see the things in their essence.

The artwork, that presents itself as a single thing with the real space that contains it, obliges who looks at it to enter into physical contact with reality and therefore with the work itself. This allows to abolish those barriers of skepticism that over a century of avant-gardes have contributed to build, create an ever greater separation between artistic culture and civil society.

The collaboration with the twin cities of Darmstadt, Logroño and Troyes in dialogue, over that with the city, also with the renewed venue of the exhibition hall of Santi Filippo e Giacomo, now C.AR.M.E., and with the homonym Association that manages it, have contributed to make the program of the twelfth edition of Meccaniche della Meraviglia more international, of which the project GEMINA, presented here, is part of it to all effects.

Identità, memoria e spazio Pieno o vuoto, aperto o chiuso, grande o piccolo, privato o pubblico, ancora una volta, in C.AR.M.E. lo spazio diviene inevitabilmente protagonista. La chiesa dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo diventa il luogo per avvicinarsi ai nuovi linguaggi artistici contemporanei con il progetto GEMINA. Arte contemporanea da Darmstadt, Logroño, Troyes. Gli artisti, invitati dalle città gemellate con Brescia, colgono l’occasione per riflettere sui confini, sempre immateriali, e sullo spazio, affermando la loro identità geografica che, nel XXI secolo, diviene sempre più ibrida e complessa.

Conflitti, identità, memoria e spazio sono i temi che accumunano i lavori di Karwath+Todisko, Anna Madia e José Antonio Olarte.

Nella grande navata, inondata dalla luce naturale, la danza immateriale di Sligh#2, installata per la prima volta nel 2016 a Berlino, si scatena a ritmi spontanei e mai prevedibili. Da dodici metri e mezzo di altezza, due cascate di cellophane leggero e quasi impalpabile respirano e fluttuano. Un dialogo fatto di cambiamento, una manifestazione d’intenti fatta da pause e di riposi, come delle sospensioni della contemporaneità dettate da tempo, ritmo e suono.

Suono imprevedibile, continuo, rimbombante e quasi irritante.

L’artista Karwath+Todisko alias Inna Wöllert, da Darmstadt, inserisce nei suoi lavori gli studi dei fenomeni fisici, approfondisce gli elementi naturali come vento, aria, suono e luce.

Input esterni come abbagli creano uno spazio narrativo, l’artista contrasta e dialoga con l’evanescenza di Slight#2 scegliendo le forme rigide e geometriche di Black Video (2018).

Definita “una confusione sulla tridimensionalità” la video proiezione è una rielaborazione di un estrapolato del progetto proposto nel 2017 al saasfee*pavillon a Francoforte. Black Video proietta lo spettatore in uno stato di confusione, attraverso giochi di luci e ombre che vanno a comporre uno spazio di difficile comprensione. Una griglia geometrica tridimensionale, filmata utilizzando giochi di luce, confonde i confini tra realtà e immaginazione. I nostri sensi percettivi vengono messi in dubbio, quello che vediamo è reale?

Da errori, abbagli, inganni, incanti, ammali, immagini è composta Hallucinations, opera presentata da Anna Madia da Troyes.

Ricordi intrappolati, conflitti e paure che ritornano e rivivono negli occhi, cancellati o mascherati dalla pittura ad olio.

L’opera, 25 olii su carta, racconta lo spazio più privato dell’essere umano attraverso visioni, allucinazioni, sogni in momenti di narcolessia o sonnambulismo.

L’artista, d’origini italiane, racconta storie in cui residui della pittura spagnola si incontrano e l’inquietudine fa da padrona in un personale formalismo artistico.

La paura e il passato sono i protagonisti obiettivi e reali in una condizione di instabilità e poeticità assoluta. L’artista tenta di annientare immagini di passati tormentati rivelando una bianca nuova luce. Una luce che affronta e aggredisce allucinazioni e stati confusionali.

Il tema dello spazio pubblico privato e sociale è infine affrontato da Josè Antonio Olarte, da Logroño, che lo indaga nei suoi limiti, attraverso composizioni plastiche stabili e persistenti.

Lo spazio come luogo di transito o di stazionamento in una collettività dove la parola movimento è all’ordine del giorno e dove sempre di più si perdono le coordinate personali.

In Topografía de una dìa gris 1 e 2, il tentativo di Olarte è quello di fermare e bloccare, come una macchina fotografica, l’aspetto di uno specifico luogo, ponendo l’attenzione ai primi dettagli e punti di riferimento che vengono percepiti.

L’immagine non è più eterea e mutevole, le sculture di ferro dell’artista esplorano la stabilità e solidità della materia. 400 moduli di ferro catturano porzioni di spazio e lo arginano fermandolo chiedendo di trattenersi e di non cambiare. Importante il dialogo tra le due sculture, in Topografía de una dìa gris 2, la componente della luce si trasforma in artificiale e qui il tempo si fa lento e acquista intensità e importanza, lo spazio diventa privato e intimo, quasi esclusivo celandosi in maniera confidenziale.

Cinque opere con tre linguaggi artistici differenti che dialogano in uno spazio al centro di un quartiere funivia di culture ed etnie provenienti da tutto il mondo. GEMINA. Arte contemporanea da Darmstadt, Logroño, Troyes è lo spaccato di una collettività nuova e complessa, dove lo spazio è protagonista e viene messo in continua discussione e al tempo stesso apre nuovi sorprendenti scenari di condivisione.

Identity, memory and space Full or empty, open or close, large or small, private or public, in C.AR.M.E. the space becomes once again the protagonist. With GEMINA. Contemporary Art from Darmstadt, Logroño, Troyes ’s exhibition, the church of Santi Filippo e Giacomo becomes a place where to approach the new contemporary artistic languages. The artists, invited from the twin cities with Brescia, take this opportunity to reflect on the boundaries, always immaterial, and on the space, affirming their geographical identity which, in the 21st century, becomes increasingly hybrid and complex.

Conflicts, identity, memory and space are the themes that unite the works of Karwath+Todisko, Anna Madia and José Antonio Olarte.

In the large nave, flooded with natural light, the immense dance of Sligh#2, installed for the first time in 2016 in Berlin, is unleashed at spontaneous and never predictable rhythms. Twelve and a half meters high, two waterfalls of light and almost impalpable cellophane breathe and float. A dialogue made of change, a manifestation of the intent made up of pauses and rests, like the suspensions of contemporaneity dictated by time, rhythm and sound.

Unpredictable, continuous, booming and almost irritating sound.

The artist Karwath+Todisko (aka Inna Wöllert), from Darmstadt, inserts the studies of physical phenomena in her works, deepens the natural elements such as wind, air, sound and light.

External inputs, like dazzle, create a narrative space, the artist contrasts and dialogues with the evanescence of Slight#2 choosing the rigid and geometric shapes of Black Video (2018).

Defined as a confusion on three-dimensionality, the video projection is a reworking of an extrapolated project proposed in 2017 at the saasfee*pavillon in Frankfurt. Black Video projects the viewer in a state of confusion, through plays of lights and shadows that compose a space difficult to understand. A three-dimensional geometric grid, filmed using plays of light, confuses the boundaries between reality and imagination. Our perceptive senses are questioned, what we see is real?

Hallucinations, a work presented by Anna Madia from Troyes, is composed by errors, dazzle, deceits, enchantments, images.

Trapped memories, conflicts and fears that come back and come back to life, erased or masked by oil painting.

The work, 25 oils on paper, tells the most private space of the human being through visions, hallucinations, dreams in moments of narcolepsy or sleepwalking.

The artist, originally from Italy, tells stories in which residues of Spanish painting meet, and disquiet is the main feature of a personal artistic formalism.

Fear and the past are the objective and real protagonists in a state of absolute instability and poetry. The artist tries to annihilate images of tormented past, revealing a new white light. A light that deals with hallucinations and confusional states and attacks them.

Finally, the theme of private and social public space is faced by Josè Antonio Olarte, from Logroño, who investigates its limits, through stable and persistent plastic compositions.

The space as a place of transit or parking in a community where the word movement is the order of the day and where more and more personal coordinates are lost.

In Topografía de una dìa gris 1 and 2, Olarte's attempt is to stop and block, like a camera, the appearance of a specific place, paying attention to the first details and points of reference that are perceived.

The image is no longer ethereal and changeable, the artist's iron sculptures explore the stability and solidity of the material. Four hundred iron modules capture portions of space and stem it by stopping it asking to be restrained and not to change. The dialogue between the two sculptures is important, in Topografía de una dìa gris 2, the component of light is transformed into artificial and here time becomes slow and acquires intensity and importance, the space becomes private and intimate, almost exclusive, concealing it in a confidential manner.

Five works with three different artistic languages that dialogue in a space in the middle of a cableway district of cultures and ethnic groups from all over the world. GEMINA. Contemporary art from Darmstadt, Logroño, Troyes is the cross-section of a new and complex community, where space is the protagonist and it is put in constant discussion and at the same time opens up new surprising scenarios of sharing.

Il progetto espositivo di GEMINA sviluppa a C.AR.M.E. un aspetto peculiare del contemporaneo, quello della memoria intesa come relazione tra perdita e permanenza dell’immagine.

Un tema complesso e oggi più che mai necessariamente in evidenza nei linguaggi del visivo, laddove i new media e la rete pongono in modo scottante il problema dello stoccaggio e della conservazione dei dati e dei documenti visuali, ma anche della privacy e del rispetto della segretezza degli stessi. Le opere esposte a GEMINA sono, pur nella diversificazione dei risultati formali, espressione delle geografie culturali dei tre artisti invitati, e al contempo riflessioni visive sui temi della permanenza e dell’effimero. Karwath+Todisko si insedia nello spazio centrale della Sala dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo con Slight#2, installazione ambientale colossale realizzata appositamente per C.AR.M.E. - l’artista ne aveva realizzata una versione ridotta in studio a Darmstadt - formata da due diafani fogli di membrane plastiche che, attraverso lo stimolo dell’aria artificiale proveniente da due grandi ventilatori posti a terra, volteggiano percorrendo, scendendo e risalendo in altezza lo spazio, in un lieve e persistente mutare. Le forme sinuose e di reminiscenza organica che i fogli suggeriscono sono cariche di evocazioni memoriali: dalle opere curvilinee dell’Art Nouveau, che proprio a Darmstadt ha lasciato importanti tracce, alle movenze di Loïe Fuller, icona pioneristica della danza contemporanea, fino all’azzeramento del concetto di opera e all’effimero che ne deriva che in Germania, sin dalla fine degli anni Cinquanta, il gruppo Zero seppe delineare, con azioni performative dove proprio l’aria, la plastica, la luce e il potere misterioso e radicale dell’immagine tra apparizione e nascondimento, o meglio azzeramento, erano i soggetti preferenziali e protagonisti.

La componente evocativa in Slight#2 emerge grazie anche all’uso della musica e al dialogo con il neo-costruttivista Black Video, proiettato contestualmente.

Un saliscendi di linee rette e perpendicolari tesse una trama che pare sempre sul punto di disfarsi, come i reticoli della mente quando prova ad aggrappare e ordinare, invano, pensieri di un troppo lontano passato.

A destra della sala, la Topografía de un dia gris 2 di José Antonio Olarte, artista spagnolo, ribadisce e visualizza il rapporto tra persistenza e diafania dell’immagine, attraverso ancora il modulo-modello della griglia di ferro e cristallo; specularmente, all’esterno, vi risponde Topografía de un dia gris 1, altra opera dell’artista di Logroño, che invece dialoga con gli elementi architettonici preesistenti, sfocando e sdoppiando la prospettiva visiva.

Nella seconda sala di C.AR.M.E. il lavoro installativo pittorico di Anna Madia, da Troyes, si intitola Hallucinations: venticinque partiture iconiche evocano emergenze di volti e di fatti misteriosi, sguardi protesi verso lo spettatore o rivolti altrove, in una costante negazione della presenza dei corpi e delle storie che li riguardano.

GEMINA, come il titolo della mostra suggerisce, pare allora non solo riferirsi al dialogo geografico tra le tre città gemellate ma anche al potere germinante dell’immagine, tra memoria ed evanescenza.

GEMINA’s exhibition project develops in C.AR.M.E. a peculiar aspect of the contemporary, the one of the memory understood as a relationship between loss and permanence of the image.

A complex theme and nowadays more than ever necessarily in evidence in the languages of the visual, where the new medias and the network pose in a burning way the problem of the storage and the conservation of data and visual documents, but also of privacy and the respect of the secrecy of the same. The works of GEMINA are, despite the diversification of formal results, expression of the cultural geographies of the three invited artists, and meanwhile visive reflections about the themes of permanency and ephemeral.

Karwath+Todisko settles in the central space of the Sala dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo with Slight#2, a colossal environmental installation realized just for C.AR.M.E. - the artist had realized a reduced version in a studio in Darmstadt - formed by two diaphanous sheets of plastic membrane that, through the stimulus of the artificial air coming from two big fans resting on the ground, they whirl along, going up and down the space, in a slight and persistent change. The sinuous shapes and of organic reminiscences that the sheets suggest are loaded of memorial evocations: from the curvilinear works of the Art Nouveau, that just from Darmstadt had left important traces, to the movements of Loïe Fuller, pioneering icon of contemporary dance, until the reset of the concept of artwork and the ephemeral that derives from it that in Germany, since the late Fifties, the Zero group had defined, with performative actions where just air, plastic, light and the mysterious and radical powerful of the image between appearance and disappearance, better reset, they were the preferential and protagonist subjects.

The evocative component in Slight#2 emerges thanks to the use of music and the dialogue with the neo constructivist Black Video, contextually projected.

A latch of straight and perpendicular lines weaves a plot that is about to unravel, as the lattices of the mind when he tries to cling and order, in vain, thoughts of a too far past.

At the right of the room, Topografía de un dia gris 2 of José Antonio Olarte, Spanish artist, reaffirms and visualizes the relationship between persistence and diaphany of the image, through the model module of the iron and crystal grid; specularly, on the outside, Topografía de un dia gris 1 answers, another work by the artist of Logroño, which converses with the pre-existing architectural elements, blurring and doubling the visual perspective.

In the second room of C.AR.M.E., the pictorial installation work of Anna Madia, from Troyes, is entitled Hallucinations: twenty-five iconic scores evoke emergencies of faces and mysterious facts, looks outstretched towards the viewer or turned elsewhere, in a constant denial of the presence of bodies and stories that concern them.

GEMINA, as the title of the exhibition suggests, seems not only referring to the geographical dialogue between the three twin cities but also the germinating power of the image, between memory and evanescence.

Poesia dell‘immateriale

Suoni - Pellicole - Ventilatori, non serve altro per creare una stanza narrativa. Con l’istallazione Slight#2 l’artista Karwath+Todisko mostra in maniera emblematica come si possa ottenere un impatto massimo utilizzando mezzi minimi: astrae la stanza con mezzi artistici, ne addensa l’atmosfera e la rende carica di poesia per l’osservatore.

L’artista nel suo lavoro sperimenta le situazioni di stanze dal carattere marcato, assorbendone l’ambiente e traendone l’effetto più potente: “Non riesco a lasciare in pace la stanza” dice l’artista. Non le piace appendere opere alle parteti, preferisce intervenire direttamente “Io lavoro con le stanze e non riesco a fare altrimenti” come evidenziato, ad esempio, nella sua opera Golden#1 (2014), un’istallazione performativa nell’ex rifugio antiatomico di Darmstadt, caratterizzata da un’atmosfera molto opprimente.

In una delle ex camere di rifugio, fluttuano oggetti fatti di fogli di plastica metallizzata, accompagnati da un suono minaccioso. Un giovane uomo, con molta calma e concentrazione, taglia un pezzo di foglio di uno degli oggetti che vengono calati giù, dopo di che, gli stessi, si levano in alto. Golden#1 è un’opera carica di un’atmosfera densa: i fogli leggeri mossi lentamente contrastano la pesantezza ruvida e cupa della stanza.

“Dammi una stanza ed io elaboro un’opera”, dice l’artista nata a Darmstadt nel 1973. Già durante gli studi in scenografia e scultura all’Accademia di Belle Arti Weißensee di Berlino nacquero numerose installazioni come progetti partecipativi e creazioni di opere, alle quali partecipava come scenografa. Nel 2006 fu nominata allieva modello di Roland Schimmelpfennig, autore teatrale contemporaneo tra i più interpretati. Da allora crea installazioni e, parallelamente, fa nascere sale teatrali allo Schauspiel Leipzig, al teatro di Oberhausen, al Mousonturm di Francoforte, o ancora all’Opéra National du Rhin a Strasburgo.

La miccia iniziale si accende durante un progetto a Berlino: l’intuizione che al principio c’è l’ambiente, non il suo lavoro. Un condominio di uffici abbandonato, con corridoi così lunghi che la fine risulta difficilmente visibile, le ispira un’opera criminologica nella quale insegue il visitatore prima acusticamente attraverso un’audioguida, poi personalmente: Persuer (1999). Anche la laboriosa installazione Pandora/ box (2012) è un’opera narrativa e di intervento che affina la sensibilità attraverso elementi velatamente inquietanti ed ambivalenti, come accade nelle messinscene multimediali dei coniugi artisti Janet Cardiff e George Bures Miller.

“Cosa devo aggiungere per enfatizzare l’impatto di un’ambiente e acutizzare l’attenzione?” Si chiede all’inizio del processo creativo.

Per GEMINA lavora sulla stanza principale dell’ex-chiesa dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo a Brescia, edificata nel XII secolo e mutata svariate volte nel corso tempo.

Lo spazio espositivo incanta, la sacrale architettura, tuttora riconoscibile, si mostra alta e leggera. Slight#2 nasce per questa specifica situazione architettonica.

“Deve dare un senso di leggerezza” avrebbe annotato l’artista in fase di preparazione.

Da dodici metri e mezzo di altezza fino al pavimento pendono due fogli di cellophane. Delicati e fugaci si muovono attraverso i flussi d’aria dei ventilatori posti al di sotto. Accompagnati da un suono brontolante, ondeggiante e indefinibile, i fogli si gonfiano e diventano uno spazio di associazione. Stimolano la fantasia, lasciano intuire forme che ricordano qualcosa di vivo, misterioso e non tangibile.

Grazie all’accendersi e spegnersi dei ventilatori si muovono i teli e si crea qualcosa di pulsante, un alternarsi continuo fra la tensione e l’allentamento.

Slight#2 è un adattamento di Slight#1, creata per l’esposizione Slight Show (Kunsthalle Hamburger Platz, Berlino 2016). Oltre alla questione della tenda avvolgente, la creazione di flussi d’aria naturali o artificiali diventa qui un argomento caratterizzante.

“Come posso utilizzare fenomeni naturali per la mia opera?” Karwath+Todisko approfondisce la domanda.

Vento, aria, elettricità e fenomeni fisici la interessano. La gioia della presunta quotidianità, come lo svolazzamento di fogli metallici al vento sulle impalcature, posta al principio di Sligh#1, oppure le luci che si fanno strada da dietro una tenda.

“Riflessi di luce casuali mi rendono felice”.

Sono cose fondamentali quelle che assorbe e astrae: la luce, i suoi riflessi, l’aria, le correnti. L’istallazione monumentale Slight#2 riempie l’ambiente e crea una situazione artificiale grazie alla ventilazione, insieme con un suono non localizzabile e dei fogli, al cui impatto non è possibile sottrarsi.

Ondeggiando morbidamente Slight#2 crea un contrasto con le forme geometriche e regolari di Black Video (2018). Black Video, ancora più ridotto in questa installazione, è un gioco di confusione sulla tridimensionalità. Fa parte dalla serie Black creata nel 2017 per il padiglione di Francoforte saasfee*. Partendo dall’architettura caratteristica di questo padiglione, la cui struttura di base è quadrata così come i suoi infissi, Karwath+Todisko ne prende in prestito le forme, ricostruisce la struttura a griglia dell’oggetto tridimensionale e, in Black Video, ne riprende le ombre.

Attraverso la ripresa della situazione ambientale si crea un lavoro grafico che offusca i confini tra il bidimensionale ed il tridimensionale.

L’ombreggiatura fa della costruzione a griglia tridimensionale un oggetto bidimensionale. L’osservatore non è più in grado di distinguere ciò che vede. Ciò che vede sono invece delle insolite associazioni architettoniche e sorge spontanea la domanda: di ciò che vedo, cosa è l’oggetto e cosa la sua ombra?

Il rumore metallico e tintinnante del suono ricorda la riproduzione di un proiettore in grado di creare un contrasto carico di tensione con il morbido suono di Slight#2.

Oggi anche con i suoni Karwath+Todisko lavora in maniera più associativa: il brusio di voci che crea il rumore di sottofondo di Slight#2 diventa irriconoscibile.

“Lascio più finali aperti rispetto al passato”. Racconta ancora storie con le sue opere, solo che diventano più ridotte, sottili e meno tangibili.

La sua evoluzione artistica crea esperienze di spazio con mezzi sempre più astratti. Così crea una poesia dell’immateriale.

Poem of the immaterial

Sounds - Films - Fans, nothing else is needed to create a narrative room. With the installation Slight#2 the artist Karwath+Todisko shows in an emblematic way how you can obtain a maximum impact using minimal means: she abstracts the room with artistic means, she thickens the atmosphere and she makes it full of poetry for the observer.

In her artworks, the artist experiments the situations of rooms with a marked character, absorbing their environment and deriving the most powerful effect: “I can’t leave the room alone” says the artist. She does not like to hang works on the partisans, she prefers to intervene directly “I work with the rooms and I can’t do otherwise” as evidenced, for example, in her work Golden#1 (2014), a performative environment in the former bomb shelter of Darmstadt, characterized by a very oppressive atmosphere.

Objects fluctuated in one of the former refuge rooms, they are made of metallic plastic sheets, accompanied by a menacing sound. A young man, with much calm and concentration, cuts a piece of paper from one of the objects that are lowered down, after which, the same, rise up. Golden#1 is a work full of a dense atmosphere: the lightly moved sheets of paper contrast the rough, dark heaviness of the room.

“Give me a room and I create a work”, says the artist born in Darmstadt in 1973. Already during her studies in scenography and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts Weißensee in Berlin many installations were created as participatory projects and works creations, in which she participated as a set designer. In 2006 she was nominated as a model pupil of Roland Schimmelpfennig, one of the most interpreted contemporary theatrical authors. Since then she has created installations and, at the same time, created theatrical halls at the Schauspiel Leipzig, at the theater of Oberhausen, at the Mousonturm in Frankfurt, and at the Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg.

The initial fuse comes on during a project in Berlin: the intuition that at the beginning there is the space, not her work. An abandoned office building, with corridors so long that the end is hardly visible, inspires a criminal work in which the visitor first follows in an acoustic way through an audio guide, then personally: Persuer (1999). Even the laborious installation Pandora/box (2012) is a narrative work and intervention that refines the sensibility through veiled, disturbing and ambivalent elements, as happens in the multimedia staging of the spouses artists Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller.

“What should I add to emphasize the impact of an environment and sharpen the attention?” She asks herself at the beginning of her creative process.

For GEMINA, Karwath+Todisko works on the main room of the former church of Saints Filippo and Giacomo in Brescia, built in the 12th century and changed several times over the course of the time.

The exhibition space enchants, the sacral architecture, still recognizable, is high and light. Slight#2 was created for this specific architectural situation.

“It must give a sense of lightness” the artist was writing down during the preparation.

Two sheets of cellophane hang from a height of twelve and a half meters up to the floor. Delicate and fleeting they moves through the air flows of the fans below. Accompanied by a grumbling, undulating and indefinable sound, the sheets swell and become a space for association. They stimulate the imagination, they allow us to perceive shapes reminding us of something alive, mysterious and not tangible. By turning the fans on and off they move the sheets and create something pulsating. Is a continuous alternation between tension and loosening.

Slight#2 is an adaptation of Slight#1, created for the Slight Show (Kunsthalle Hamburger Platz, Berlin 2016). In addition to the question of the enveloping curtain, the creation of natural or artificial air flows becomes a characterizing subject here.

“How can I use natural phenomena for my work?” Karwath+Todisko deepens the question.

Wind, air, electricity and physical phenomena affect it. The joy of presumed everyday life, such as the fluttering of metal sheets in the wind on the scaffolding, placed at the beginning of Slight#1, or the lights that make their way from behind a curtain.

“Random light reflections make me happy”.

Those that absorb and abstract are fundamental things: the light, its reflections, the air, the currents. The monumental installation Slight #2 fills the environment and creates an artificial situation thanks to the ventilation, together with a non-localizable sound and sheets, whose impact cannot be avoided.

Slightly swaying Slight#2 creates a contrast with the geometric and regular shapes of Black Video (2018). Black Video, even more reduced in this installation, is a game of confusion on three-dimensionality. It is part of the Black series created in 2017 for the Frankfurt saasfee * pavilion. Starting from the characteristic architecture of this pavilion, whose basic structure is squared as well as its fixtures, Karwath+Todisko borrows the forms, reconstructs the grid structure of the three-dimensional object and, in Black Video, takes shadows.

Through the recovery of the environmental situation, it is created a graphic work that blurs the boundaries between the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional. The shading makes a two-dimensional object of the three-dimensional grid construction. The observer is no longer able to distinguish what he sees. What he sees are instead of the unusual architectural associations and the question arises: of what I see, what is the object and what is its shadow?

The metallic and rattling sound of the sound reminds the reproduction of a projector able to create a tension-charged contrast with the soft sound of Slight#2.

Today even with the sounds, Karwath+Todisko works in a more associative way: the buzz of voices that creates the background noise of Slight#2 becomes unrecognizable. “I leave more open endings than in the past�. She still tells stories with her works, only thing is that they become smaller, thinner and less tangible.

Her artistic evolution creates experiences of space with increasingly abstract means. This creates a poem of the immaterial.

Sound - Folie - Ventilatoren, mehr braucht es nicht, um einen erzählerischen Raum zu schaffen. Die Künstlerin Karwath+Todisko führt uns mit der Installation Slight#2 sinnbildlich vor Augen, wie mit minimalen Mitteln eine maximale Wirkung erzielt werden kann: Sie abstrahiert den Raum mit künstlerischen Mitteln, verdichtet seine Atmosphäre, schenkt ihn dem Betrachter poetisch aufgeladen zurück.

In ihrer Arbeit experimentiert sie mit markanten Raumsituationen, vereinnahmt die jeweilige Umgebung und holt aus ihr die größtmögliche Wirkung heraus. „Ich kann den Raum nicht in Ruhe lassen“ sagt die Künstlerin. Hängt ihre Werke ungern an die Wand, interveniert lieber direkt. „Ich arbeite mit Räumen, ich kann nicht anders.“ So wie bei ihrer Arbeit Golden#1 (2014), einer performativen Installation im ehemaligen Darmstädter Atomschutzbunker mit seiner beklemmenden Ausstrahlung.

Zu bedrohlichem Sound schweben goldschimmernde Objekte aus metallisierter Kunststofffolie in einer der ehemaligen Schutzkammern.

Ein junger Mann schneidet ruhig und konzentriert an den sinkenden Objekten ein Stück der Folie ab, dann schweben sie wieder empor.

Atmosphärisch dicht ist Golden#1 und die leichten, sich langsam bewegenden Folien kontrastieren die raue, düstere Schwere des Raums. „Gib mir einen Raum und ich konzipiere eine Arbeit.“ sagt die Künstlerin, die 1973 in Darmstadt geboren wurde. An der Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin studierte sie Bühnenbild und Bildhauerei. Bereits während des Studiums entstehen viele Installationen sowie partizipatorische Projekte und Stückentwicklungen, bei denen sie als Bühnenbildnerin beteiligt ist. Im Jahr 2006 erfolgt die Ernennung zur Meisterschülerin von Roland Schimmelpfennig, dem meistgespielten zeitgenössischen deutschen Theaterautor. Seither schafft sie Installationen, parallel dazu entstehen Theaterräume am Schauspiel Leipzig, am Theater Oberhausen, am Mousonturm Frankfurt, an der Opéra National du Rhin in Straßburg.

Ein Projekt in Berlin sorgt für ihre künstlerische Initialzündigung: Die Erkenntnis, dass der Raum und nicht ihre fertige künstlerische Arbeit zu Beginn stehen muss. Ein verlassenes Bürogebäude in Berlin mit sehr langen Gängen, die den Menschen am Ende des Flures kaum noch erkennen lassen, inspiriert sie zu einer kriminologischen Arbeit, bei der sie über einen Audioguide erst akustisch, dann in persona die Besucher verfolgt: persuer (1999). Auch die aufwendige Installation pandora/box (2002) ist eine erzählerische, intervenierende Arbeit, bei der sie die Sensibilität durch subtil beunruhigende und ambivalente Elemente schärft, ganz so, wie dies auch in den multimedialen Inszenierungen des kanadische Künstlerpaars Janet Cardiff und George Bures Miller geschieht. „Was muss ich hinzufügen, um die Raumwirkung zu verstärken und die Aufmerksamkeit zu schärfen?“ fragt sie sich zu Beginn des kreativen Prozesses.

Für GEMINA bespielt sie den Hauptraum der im 12. Jahrhundert entstandenen, in den folgenden Zeiten vielfach umgebauten Kirche Santi Filippo e Giacomo in Brescia. Jetzt Ausstellungsraum betört die noch immer erkennbare sakrale Architektur mit ihrer Höhe und Leichtigkeit. Slight#2 entsteht für diese spezielle architektonische Situation. „Es muss leicht aussehen!“ hatte sich die Künstlerin im Vorfeld notiert.

Aus zwölfeinhalb Metern Höhe hängen zwei weiße Folien auf den Boden herab. Zart, flüchtig bewegen sie sich durch die Luftströme der sich unter ihnen befindenden Ventilatoren. Zu einem nicht definierbaren grollenden, wogenden Sound bauschen die Folien auf, werden zum Assoziationsraum. Sie stimulieren die Fantasie, lassen Formen erahnen, die an etwas Lebendiges, Geheimnisvolles, nicht näher Greifbares denken lassen. Durch das An- und Ausgehen der Ventilatoren bewegen sich die Stoffe, ergibt sich etwas Pulsierendes, ein Wechsel von Spannung und Entspannung.

Slight#2 ist eine Adaption von Slight#1, die für die Ausstellung Slight Show (Kunsthalle am Hamburger Platz, Berlin 2016) entstand. Neben der Thematik des verhüllenden Vorhangs, ist hier bereits das Herstellen natürlicher oder hergestellter Luftzüge ein werkimmanentes Thema.

Wie kann ich physikalische Phänomene für meine künstlerische Arbeit nutzten? Dieser Frage geht Karwath+Todisko nach.

Wind, Luft Elektrizität, physikalische Phänomene interessieren sie. Die Freude an vermeintlich Alltäglichem, wie das Flattern von Malerfolie an einem Baugerüst im Wind, die am Anfang von Slight#1 steht, oder Lichter, die hinter einem Vorhang vorbeiziehen. „Zufällige Lichtreflexionen machen mich glücklich.“ Es sind die fundamentalen Dinge, die sie aufspürt und abstrahiert: das Licht, die Reflexionen des Lichts, die Luft, die Luftzüge. In der monumentalen, raumfüllenden Installation Slight#2 provoziert sie durch die Ventilatoren eine künstliche Thermik, die gemeinsam mit dem nicht zu verortenden Sound und den Folien ein Raumkunstwerk schafft, dessen Wirkung man sich nicht entziehen kann.

Weich wogend steht Slight#2 im Kontrast zu den geometrisch abgezirkelten Formen des Black Video (2018). Noch reduzierter als diese Installation ist Black Video ein Verwirrspiel über Dreidimensionalität. Es resultiert aus der Serie Black, die 2017 für den saasfee* Pavillon Frankfurt entstand. Ausgehend von der charakteristischen Architektur dieses Pavillons mit seiner quadratischen Grundstruktur und seinen quadratischen Fensterrahmen, nimmt Karwath+Todisko diese Formen auf, baut die Gitterstruktur als dreidimensionales Objekt nach und filmt in Black Video die Schattenzeichnung davon. Durch die abgefilmte Raumsituation entsteht eine graphische Arbeit, bei der die Grenzen zwischen Zwei- und Dreidimensionalem verschwimmen. ein zweidimensionales Objekt. Der Betrachter kann nicht mehr eindeutig erkennen, was er eigentlich sieht. Was entsteht sind seltsame Architekturassoziationen und die Frage: Was ist Objekt, was ist Schatten? Das leicht klirrende Rattern des Sounds erinnert an die Projektion eines Diaprojektors, bildet einen spannungsreichen Kontrast zu dem weicheren Sound von Slight#2.

Auch beim Sound arbeitet Karwath+Todisko inzwischen assoziativer: die summende Menschenstimme, die den Hintergrund für Slight#2 bildet, ist nicht mehr erkennbar. „Ich lasse mehr offene Enden als früher.“ Sie erzählt immer noch Geschichten mit ihren Arbeiten - sie werden nur reduzierter, subtiler, sind weniger fassbar.

Ihre künstlerische Entwicklung geht ins Raumerleben mit immer abstrahierteren Mitteln. So erschafft sie eine Poesie des Immateriellen.

L’intenzione è quella di esporre le peculiarità di una stanza con l’utilizzo di non-materiali come l’aria, la luce e il suono, in modo tale da creare una certa atmosfera. Lo spettatore diventa parte dell’installazioni senza rendersene conto ed è portato ad interagire in modo sottile.

Karwath+Todisko alias Inna Wöllert ha studiato scenografia e scultura alla Weißensee Academy of Arts di Berlino.

L’artista era membro del master class di Roland Schimmelpfennig, e nel 2003 vincitrice del Premio Mart Stam. Le sue installazioni sono state esposte tra l’altro alla Kunsthalle am Hamburger Platz a Berlino, alla Künstlerhaus Mousonturm e al saasfee*pavillon a Francoforte.

José Antonio Olarte Nel mondo dell'arte attuale, l'originalità ha cessato di essere un valore assoluto e agli artisti non è più richiesto di costruirsi uno stile inconfondibile o di rivoluzionare il mondo delle forme. Prima dell'originalità è apprezzata la spontaneità, l'occorrenza, la capacità di sconcertare o sorprendere.

L'arte, in uno spazio come C.AR.M.E., diventa un mezzo per raggiungere gli strati più ampi della popolazione. In contrasto con le istituzioni artistiche affermate, l'arte dovrebbe cercare di creare una scena alternativa e indipendente, la cui missione è quella di educare, democratizzare i prodotti culturali, con un discorso critico che trova spazio ideale in luoghi come C.AR.M.E., luoghi dove integrazione e partecipazione sono segni di identità.

Essere invitati a partecipare a GEMINA, nell'ambito del progetto Meccaniche della Meraviglia è stata una sfida e un onore che non potevamo - non volevamo - rifiutare. Soprattutto quando una persona ed un artista della qualità di José Antonio Olarte era disposto a partecipare come rappresentante della città di Logroño.

José Antonio Olarte è un costruttore, un demiurgo, nella sua bottega del silenzio e della solitudine, ma può diventare come Efesto quando è nella fonderia, con il ferro, tra forni, stampi, gru e torni. Le sue opere sono frammenti di una realtà che è al di là della nostra portata e che, grazie a lui, possiamo percepire e godere. La sua qualità umana è quella di un insegnante, un insegnante in un costante processo di apprendimento, che analizza tutto e non dà nulla per scontato.

Partecipare e accompagnare José Antonio Olarte in questo progetto è stata una delle esperienze più piacevoli della mia vita. Non lo dimenticherò mai.

Ecco perché voglio ringraziare la città di Brescia per il suo invito e la sua generosità. Per ragioni di spazio non posso menzionare tutte le persone che mi hanno aiutato in questo e in tutti i progetti in cui abbiamo partecipato durante il gemellaggio tra Brescia e Logroño.

José Antonio Olarte In the current art world, originality has ceased to be an absolute value: artists are no longer required to build a unique style or to revolutionize the world of forms. Before the originality is appreciated the spontaneity, the occurrence, the ability to disconcert or surprise.

Art, in a space like C.AR.M.E., becomes a means of reaching the broader strata of the population. In contrast to established artistic institutions, art should try to create an alternative and independent scene, whose mission is to educate, democratize cultural products, with a critical discourse that finds an ideal space in places like C.AR.M.E., places where integration and participation are signs of identity.

Being invited to participate in GEMINA, in the context of the Meccaniche della Meraviglia project, was a challenge and an honor that we could not - we did not want to - refuse. Especially when a person and an artist of the quality of José Antonio Olarte was willing to participate as a representative of the city of Logroño.

José Antonio Olarte is a builder, a demiurge, in his shop of silence and solitude, but he can become like Hephaestus when he is in the foundry, with iron, between ovens, molds, cranes and lathes. His works are fragments of a reality that is beyond our reach and which, thanks to him, we can perceive and enjoy. His quality is that he is a teacher, a teacher in a constant learning process, who analyzes everything and takes nothing for granted.

Participating and accompanying José Antonio Olarte in this project was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life. I'll never forget it.

That's why I want to thank the city of Brescia for its invitation and generosity. For reasons of space I cannot mention all the people who helped me in this and in all the projects in which we participated during the twinning between Brescia and Logroño.

José Antonio Olarte En el mundo del arte actual, la originalidad ha dejado de ser un valor absoluto y ya no se exige a los artistas que construyan un estilo inconfundible o que revolucionen el mundo de las formas. Antes que la originalidad se valora la espontaneidad, la ocurrencia, la capacidad para desconcertar o sorprender.

El arte, en un espacio como C.AR.M.E., es una forma de llegar a los sectores más amplios de la población. Frente a las instituciones artísticas consolidadas, el arte debe tratar de configurar una escena alternativa, independiente, que tiene como misión educar, democratizar los productos culturales con un discurso crítico que encuentra un espacio ideal en un lugar como C.AR.M.E. en el que la integración y la participación son sus signos de identidad.

Ser invitados a participar en GEMINA, dentro del proyecto “Meccaniche della Meraviglia” fue un reto y un honor que no pudimos – ni quisimos – rehusar. Sobre todo cuando una persona y artista de la calidad de José Antonio Olarte se mostró dispuesta a participar representando a la ciudad de Logroño.

José Antonio Olarte es un constructor, un demiurgo en su taller de silencios y soledades pero se transforma en Hefesto en la fundición, con el hierro, entre hornos, moldes, grúas y tornos. Sus obras son fragmentos de una realidad que está fuera de nuestro alcance y que, gracias a él, nos es dado percibir y disfrutar. Su calidad humana es la de un maestro, un maestro en constante proceso de aprendizaje, que todo lo analiza y no da nada por supuesto.

Participar y acompañar a José Antonio Olarte en este proyecto ha sido una de las experiencias más gratas de mi vida. No la voy a olvidar nunca.

Es por ello que quiero agradecer a la ciudad de Brescia su invitación y generosidad. Por razones de espacio no puedo citar a todas las personas que me han ayudado en éste y en todos los proyectos en los que hemos participado en el ámbito del hermanamiento entre Brescia y Logroño.

No me olvido de nadie, podéis estar seguros. Nadie olvida a las personas a las que quiere.

Per me, che utilizzo abitualmente la materia come forma di linguaggio, non è facile esprimere a parole tutte le percezioni e sensazioni che ho provato con la mia partecipazione a questa interessante e arricchente esposizione intitolata GEMINA. Se l’arte è soprattutto una questione di percezione e stimoli che si trasformano in sentimenti, nella Sala Santi Filippo e Giacomo si sommano anche, da una parte, la magia dell’architettura dello spazio monacale evocatore del passato e, dall’altra, il presente, rappresentato in tutti i nomi delle persone che rendono possibile C.AR.M.E. con la sua filosofia ed il suo lavoro, lavoro che segna un cammino aperto al futuro dei luoghi, delle persone e dell’arte. È precisamente questo nuovo percorso integrativo, rinnovatore dello spazio e dell’aspetto partecipativo di C.AR.M.E. e di Meccaniche della Meraviglia che più sorprende, il che mi ha fatto riflettere sul mio passato e sul mio lavoro futuro.

Oggi, che il mondo dell’arte in tutto il pianeta è ad un bivio, con l’incertezza della scelta e dell’evoluzione, in cui sorgono dubbi sulla coerenza in alcuni dei suoi aspetti, si percepisce a C.AR.M.E. - a Brescia - e a Meccaniche della Meraviglia la certezza della vera arte che non si fonda unicamente nella banale estetica, l’arte che si occupa di tutte le persone, l’arte degli abbracci, delle installazioni, l’arte più democratica che occupa la strada con tutte le sue tecniche, l’arte trasgressiva delle emozioni e dei sentimenti.

Grazie A proposito della mia partecipazione alla mostra, devo dire che è un vero privilegio e soprattutto ringrazio per l’invito e per l’ospitalità.

Beh si, ho dimenticato il mio amico di Brescia Sandro, Sandro con la sua frase “per prima l’ospitalità” e ho anche dimenticato il nome dei nuovi partner di Daniela, Armando e Camilla.

Sulla mostra Penso che visitare GEMINA non lascerà nessuno indifferente e attirerà l’attenzione degli spettatori.

Tra il sentire poetico dell’installazione “Hallucination” di Anna Madia con le sue composizioni orizzontali che permettono di passeggiare tra i volumi, che io percepisco come sculture che sostengono il peso delle anime che lottano con la legge di gravità e la possibilità di elevarsi mantenendo un equilibrio tra il fisico e il metafisico.

Inna Wöllert (Karwath+Todisko) con la sua installazione crea e trasforma il suo spazio, la composizione è fatta di volumi mutevoli, suggestivi, sottili e organici. Anche in questo caso le leggi della natura insieme al vento, al suono e al video fanno parte del suo lavoro.

La percezione visuale di Topografía de un día Gris ha portato a GEMINA un sentimento spaziale che non ho mai provato prima, in parte per la natura dello spazio che è esso stesso un’opera d’arte però anche per il contrappunto con le installazioni di Anna e Inna.

Il peso e la forza della materia si fanno più leggeri e amichevoli, si equilibrano ed integrano con il suono, il movimento e la poesia, portati dalle mie due compagne Anna e Inna nello spazio della Sala Santi Filippo e Giacomo, in questa mostra che unisce persone, spazi e città gemellate.

Breve storia su Topografia de un dìa Gris come pretesto per parlare delle città Il titolo del mio contributo a GEMINA è Topografía de un dìa Gris, opera che fece parte, nel 2008, di una mostra intitolata Procesos, esposizione condivisa con i miei due amici e pittori Carlos López e Carlos Corres.

L’obiettivo principale della mostra era quello di relazionarsi, in principio attraverso disegni embrionali, fino ad arrivare alla conclusione dell’opera, quando sono terminati anche tutti i passaggi e tutto il processo di lavoro necessario per la creazione di un’opera, materiali, tecniche, idee, etc.

Quattrocento sono i pezzi che compongono Topografìa de un dìa Gris, così ho pensato che sarebbe stato interessante portarla fuori dal laboratorio per installarla all’esterno.

Il luogo scelto era uno spazio vicino alla città di Logroño. Abbiamo installato e fotografato la scultura nel corso di diversi giorni come uno, un giorno speciale con il cielo grigio e pieno di nuvole ma con una luce intensa, nel quale abbiamo scattato molte fotografie, alcune delle quali sono state lasciate come opere, con una propria personalità e, al tempo stesso, come parte del processo formativo dell’opera.

Fu la giornata così speciale, il cielo, il luogo, il pretesto adeguato per nominare l’opera TOPOGRAFIA DE UN DÌA GRIS. Tornati all’officina con i pezzi di ferro, l’opera si raddoppiò con altri quattrocento pezzi per costruire, tramite la luce esterna “trasformata” in vetro colorato illuminato, TOPOGRAFIA DE UN DÌA GRIS II ciò che ha fatto parte di questa mostra, dal suggestivo ed evocativo titolo GEMINA. I quattrocento fori dell’opera, collocata davanti alla città, simbolicamente sono diventati la rappresentazione dei piccoli spazi individuali e personali che insieme costituiscono il grande spazio collettivo che è la città, il grande spazio collettivo che ci permette di usare il verbo ESSERE per essere persone, essere atleti, essere ingegneri, essere carpentieri… e soprattutto avere la possibilità di essere per AVERE, avere la libertà di cantare, amare, viaggiare, giocare, rivendicare, aiutare, collaborare, sognare, sentire, vivere…

For me, which I usually use the material as a form of language, it is not easy to express in words all the perceptions and sensations I felt with my participation in this interesting and enriching exhibition entitled GEMINA. If art is above all a matter of perception and stimuli that develop into feelings, in the Sala Santi Filippo and Giacomo are also added, on a hand, the magic of the architecture of the monastic space that evokes the past and, on the other hand, the present, depicted by all the people that make C.AR.M.E. possible with his philosophy and his work, work that marks a path open to the future of places, people and art.

What surprise me the most is exactly this new integrative path, that commutes space and the partecipative aspect of C.AR.M.E. and Meccaniche della Meraviglia. All of this made me meditate about my past and my future work.

Now that the art world in all the planet is at a crossroad, with the uncertainty of choosing and evolving and in which arise doubts about his coherence in some of his aspects, it is perceived in C.AR.M.E. and in Meccaniche della Meraviglia the certainty of true art that doesn’t establish itself just on banal aesthetic; the art that deals with all the people; the art of hugging, of installations; the most democratic art that deals with the street with all his technics; the transgressive art of emotions and feelings.

About the exhibition I think that visiting GEMINA will leave an impression to everyone, none excluded, and will catch the attention of the visitors.

Between the poetic feelings of Anna Madia’s installation “Hallucination” with his horizontal compositions that let the visitor walk through the volumes that I perceive as sculpture that support the weight of souls that fight with the gravity law and the possibility to elevate themselves, while maintaining a balance between physic and metaphysic.

Inna Wöllert (Karwath+Todisko) with her installation creates and transforms her space, composing with changing, suggestive, subtle and organic volumes. Also in this case, the laws of nature, togheter with the wind, the sound and the video, are part of her work.

The visual perception of Topografía de un día Gris brought to GEMINA a spatial feeling that I never felt before, partly for the nature of the space that is itself an artwork but also for the counterpoint with the installations of Anna and Inna.

The weight and the strength of the material become more lighter and friendly; they balance and integrate with the sound, the movement and the poetry that contribute to the space of the Sala Santi Filippo e Giacomo my two partners Inna and Anna in this exhibition that unites people, spaces and twin cities.

Short story about Topografia de un dìa Gris as a pretext to talk about the cities Topografía de un día Gris is the title of my contribution to GEMINA. It was part of an exhibition realized in 2008, named Procesos; an exhibition shared with my friends and painters Carlos López and Carlos Corres.

The main goal of the exhibition was to relate, from the beginning, with the germinal drawings and, until the end with the finished work, all the passages and all the process of work necessary for the creation of a work of art, materials, technics, ideas, etc.

With the four hundred pieces that compose Topografía de un día Gris, I thought that it would be interesting to take it out of the laboratory and install it outside.

The chosen place was near the city of Logroño. We installed the sculpture and photographed it during different days, one of which was very special with a grey sky full of clouds, but with an intense light, in which we took a lot of pictures. Some of these photos were left as artworks with their own personality and, at the same time, forming part of the art process.

This so special day, the sky and the place where the adequate pretext for the title TOPOGRAFIA DE UN DÌA GRIS. Back to the laboratory with the pieces of iron, the work was doubled with another four hundred pieces in order to build with the external light “transformed” into colored glass illuminated, TOPOGRAFIA DE UN DÌA GRIS II took part in this exhibition with the suggestive and evocative title of GEMINA. The four hundred holes of the work - placed in front of the city - symbolically, became the representation of the small individual and personal spaces that all together form the great collective space of the City, the great collective space that let us use the verb TO BE, to be people, be athletes, be engineers, be carpenters… and most of all have the chance to be about TO HAVE, have the freedom to sing, love, travel, play, claim, help, collaborate, dream, feel, live…

Para mí, que utilizo habitualmente la materia como forma de lenguaje, no es fácil expresar con palabras todas las percepciones y sensaciones que he tenido con mi participación en esta interesante y enriquecedora exposición con el nombre de GEMINA. Si el arte es sobre todo una cuestión de percepciones y estímulos que se transforman en sentimientos, en San Filipo e Giacomo se suman además por un lado la magia de la arquitectura propia de los espacios monacales evocadores del pasado y por otro lado el presente representado en todos los nombres de las personas que hacen posible C.AR.M.E. con su filosofía y su trabajo, trabajo que deja un camino abierto para el futuro de los lugares de las personas y del arte. Es precisamente este nuevo camino integrador, transformador del espacio y participativo el aspecto de C.AR.M.E. y de Meccaniche della Meraviglia que más sorprende, el que también a mí me ha hecho reflexionar sobre mi pasado y mi trabajo futuro. Ahora que el mundo del arte en todo el planeta en general se encuentra en una encrucijada de caminos, con la incertidumbre de elegir y evolucionar y en el que además surgen las dudas sobre su coherencia en alguno de sus aspectos, se percibe en C.AR.M.E. en Brescia, en eccaniche della Meraviglia la certeza del verdadero arte, el que no se fundamenta únicamente en la estética banal, el que se ocupa de todas las personas, el arte de los abrazos, de las instalaciones, el arte más democrático que ocupa la calle con todas sus técnicas, el arte transgresor de las emociones y de los sentidos.

Sobre la muestra Pienso que visitar GEMINA no dejará a nadie indiferente y captará la atención de los espectadores Entre el sentido poético de la instalación Hallucinations de Anna Madia con sus composición horizontal que permite pasear entre volúmenes que yo percibo como esculturas que soportan el peso de las almas luchando con la ley de la gravedad y la posibilidad de elevarse manteniéndose en una línea de equilibrio entre lo físico y lo metafísico Inna Wöllert (Karwath+Todisko) con su instalación crea y transforma su propio espacio, componiendo con volúmenes cambiantes sugerentes sutiles y orgánicos. Aquí de nuevo las leyes de la naturaleza junto con el viento, el sonido y el vídeo forman parte de la obra.

La percepción visual de Topografía de un día Gris ha tomado en GEMINA un sentido especial que nunca antes había tenido, en parte por la naturaleza del espacio que es por sí mismo una obra pero también por el contrapunto de las instalaciones de Anna e Inna.

El peso y la fuerza de la materia se hacen más ligeros y amables y equilibran e integran con el sonido, el movimiento y la poesía que aportan al espacio de Santi Filippo e Giacomo mis dos compañeras Inna y Anna en esta muestra que une a personas espacios y ciudades lejanas.

Breve relato sobre Topografía de un dìa Gris como pretexto para hablar de las ciudades Topografía de un día Gris, es el título de mi aportación a GEMINA y formó parte de una exposición en el año 2008 que se llamó Procesos, exposición compartida con mis dos amigos y pintores Carlos López y Carlos Corres.

El sentido principal de la exposición fue el de relatar desde el principio con los dibujos germinales y hasta el final con la obra ya terminada todos los pasos y todo el proceso de trabajo necesarios para la creación de una obra, materiales, técnicas, ideas, etc.

Con las cuatrocientas piezas que componen Topografía de un día Gris preparadas, pensé que podría ser interesante sacarlas del taller para instalarlas en el exterior.

El lugar elegido fue un espacio próximo a la ciudad de Logroño, con la escultura instalada y fotografiada durante varios días hubo uno, un día especial con el cielo gris y lleno de nubes, pero con una luz intensa en el que realizamos muchas fotografías alguna de las cuales quedaron como obras con su propia personalidad y al mismo tiempo, formando parte del proceso.

El día tan especial el cielo y el lugar fueron el pretexto adecuado para el título TOPOGRAFIA DE UN DÌA GRIS. De vuelta al taller con las piezas de hierro la obra se duplicó con otras cuatrocientas piezas más para construir TOPOGRAFIA DE UN DÌA GRIS II la luz exterior transformada en la vidriera iluminada que ha formado parte de esta exposición con el nombre tan evocador y sugerente de GEMINA Los cuatrocientos huecos de la obra situados delante de la ciudad, de forma simbólica se convirtieron en la representación de los pequeños espacios individuales y personales que sumados forman el gran espacio colectivo de la ciudad, el gran espacio compartido que nos permite utilizar el verbo SER para ser personas, ser atletas, ser ingenieros, ser carpinteros… y sobre todo la posibilidad de ser para TENER, tener libertad para cantar, amar, viajar, jugar, reivindicar, ayudar, colaborar, soñar, sentir, vivir…

José Antonio Olarte Nato nella località di Haro nel 1958, José Antonio Olarte ha avuto il suo primo contatto con il mondo del colore e del volume con il suo professore Fernando Román.

Anni di lavoro, apprendistato e compromessi con la sua opera, soprattutto scultorea, gli hanno permesso di elaborare pitture materiche e sculture in formati differenti e materiali tali come ferro, bronzo e legno.

Tra le sue opere più significative si possono menzionare, per il loro simbolismo, “Naves de Paso”, “364+1”, “Espacio compartido”, “Topografía de un día gris”, “En busca de un sueño” installazione nel cammino di Santiago, “Reflexión 40756”, “42,195” e le serie di sculture in acciaio forgiato denominate “Sombras” e “Ciclos”.

A partire dal 1996, comincia a mostrare il suo lavoro in diverse esposizioni in Spagna, altri Paesi europei, Messico e Stati Uniti.

Troyes Anna Madia

Capitale storica della Champagne, città d'Arte e di Storia, Troyes si trova ad appena un'ora e mezza da Parigi e si contraddistingue per il suo quieto vivere.

Come Brescia in Italia, Troyes si trova nel Nord-Est della Francia. La sua posizione geografica all'incrocio di una fitta rete di infrastrutture di trasporto sia francesi che europee, le ha conferito un ruolo strategico e centrale a livello commerciale fin dal medioevo (principale centro fieristico della regione Champagne) e ha condotto la città ad impegnarsi nella politica dei gemellaggi dal dopo guerra fino ad oggi.

Il primo gemellaggio con la città belga di Tournai arriva nel 1951, seguito da quello con Darmstadt (Germania) ed Alkmaar (Olanda) nel 1958, Zielona-Góra (Polonia) nel 1970 e Chesterfield (Inghilterra) nel 1973.

Se Troyes è una cittadina dinamica (conta più di 10.600 studenti ossia un numero più che quadruplicato negli ultimi 20 anni) lo deve in grande parte all'importantissimo patrimonio storico e alle numerose tradizioni artigianali che è riuscita a salvaguardare.

E sono proprio queste ricchezze patrimoniali con l’industria tessile e la viticoltura (Troyes è la 2a appellazione Champagne!) che l'hanno condotta ad avvicinarsi alla città di Brescia. Dal 2009 (anno in cui Brescia è stata ospite d'onore della mostra Graines d’artistes du monde entier organizzata a Troyes dal Centre Troyen Louis-François per l’UNESCO) fino ad oggi, le due città hanno effettuato numerosi scambi nel campo dello sport, della gastronomia o dell'arte. Il rafforzarsi dei loro legami le ha naturalmente condotte a diventare città gemelle il 10 giugno 2016.

La città di Troyes ha accettato con grande piacere l’invito della città di Brescia ad associarsi alla mostra GEMINA. Arte contemporanea da Darmstadt, Logroño, Troyes organizzata dall'Associazione C.AR.M.E.

In questa occasione, Anna Madia, artista italiana residente da molti anni a Troyes, ha presentato un'installazione di venticinque dipinti ad olio su carta. Ogni dipinto, «dipinto notturno» il cui bianco e nero evoca il ricordo evanescente dei sogni al risveglio, è stato presentato come un aspetto inedito delle Mecchaniche della Meraviglia. Una collaborazione che rafforza ulteriormente il legame già solido tra le due città.

Historical capital of Champagne, Art and History City, Troyes is situated an hour and a half from Paris and it stands out for its quiet life.

As Brescia in Italy, Troyes is in the North-East of France. His geographic position at the intersection of a dense infrastructure network of French and European transport, conferred it a strategic and central role at commercial level since Middle Ages (main exhibition center of the Champagne region) and it led the city to engage in the twinning policy from post-war until now.

The first twinning with the Belgian City of Tournaj comes in 1951, followed by the one with Darmstadt (Germany) and Alkmaar (Holland) in 1958, Zielona-Góra (Poland) in 1970 and Chesterfield (England) in 1973.

The historical center of Troyes, nicknamed “Bouchon de Champagne” for his cape shape seen by the sky, hides an impressive quantity of artistic and architectural treasures: • 10 classified churches and 14 hôtels particuliers; • 5 museums with the “Musées de France” label; • 10 000 square meters of colored windows from the 13th to the 19th century; • one of the largest media libraries of France (more than 750 000 registered works) including the medieval fund registered as a UNESCO heritage; • a lot of historical mansions with facades in polychrome wood from the 16th century.

Its 137 hectares of protected sector are delimited by the shift of the course of the River Seine done in the Middle Ages to meet the needs of the local textile industry. Today European capital of the centres de marques (4 millions of visitors every year), Troyes has seen the birth of famous houses all over the world such as Petit Bateau, DIM, Barbara, Lacoste, Zadig and Voltaire, Absorba or Olympia…

If Troyes is a dynamic city (counts more than 10.600 students, number that is a more than quadruplicated in the last 20 years), it owns it to the important historic heritage and to the numerous craft traditions that it safeguarded.

And they are just this wealth of assets with the textile industry and the viticulture (Troyes is the second named Champagne!) that led it to come closer to the city of Brescia. From 2009 (year in which Brescia was the honor guest to the exhibition Graines d’artistes du monde entier organized by the Centre Troyen Louis-François for the UNESCO in Troyes) until now, the two cities have performed numerous exchanges in the field of sport, gastronomy and art. The reinforcement of their bonds naturally led them to become twin cities on 10 June 2016.

The City of Troyes accepted with pleasure the invitation of the City of Brescia to associate with the exhibition GEMINA. Contemporary art from Darmstadt, Logroño, Troyes organized by the Association of C.AR.M.E. In this occasion, Anna Madia, Italian artist resident from many years in Troyes, presented an installation of 25 oil paintings on paper.

Each painting, “nocturnal painting”, was presented as an unpublished aspect of Meccaniche della Meraviglia. A collaboration that further strengthens the already solid bond between the two cities.

Capitale historique de la Champagne, Troyes, ville d’Art et d’Histoire, réunit les atouts d’une ville où il fait bon vivre à 1h 30 de Paris, Dijon ou Reims.

Comme Brescia en Italie, Troyes est située au Nord-Est de la France. Au cœur d’un réseau d’infrastructures de transport français et européen, sa situation géographique stratégique a fait de Troyes le berceau des Foires de Champagne au Moyen-Age. Forte de cette tradition d’échanges, Troyes s’est naturellement engagée après-guerre dans la politique des jumelages. Elle formalise ainsi son amitié avec la ville belge de Tournai dès1951. Vinrent ensuite Darmstadt (Allemagne) et Alkmaar (Pays-Bas) en 1958, ZielonaGóra (Pologne) en 1970 et Chesterfield (Angleterre) en 1973.

Le centre de Troyes, surnommé le Bouchon de Champagne en raison de sa silhouette vue du ciel, recèle une quantité impressionnante de trésors artistiques et architecturaux : - 10 églises classées et 14 hôtels particuliers remarquables, - 5 musées labélisés Musées de France - 10 000 m2 de vitrail du XIIIe au XIXe - L’une des plus riches médiathèques de France (plus de 750 000 ouvrages) dont un fonds médiéval classé au patrimoine de l’UNESCO - Des maisons en pans de bois polychromes du XVIe sur un parcellaire médiéval Ses 137 hectares de secteur sauvegardé sont délimités par la dérivation de la Seine, nécessitée par l’industrie bonnetière. Si Troyes, ville-centre de l’agglomération Troyes Champagne Métropole, est une agglomération dynamique, qui compte plus de 10 600 étudiants, un chiffre multiplié par 5 en 20 ans, notre territoire n’en oublie pas pour autant ses richesses historiques nombreuses et a su préserver et faire vivre des savoir-faire artisanaux d’exception.

C’est notamment leur patrimoine historique, l’industrie textile et la viticulture (Troyes est la 2e appellation Champagne !) qui rassemblent Troyes et Brescia, dont les liens se sont tissés à partir de 2009, année durant laquelle Brescia, également jumelée avec Darmstadt et Chesterfield, a été l’invitée d’honneur de l’exposition Graines d’artistes du monde entier organisée à Troyes par le centre troyen LouisFrançois pour l’UNESCO. D’abord « villes associées », leurs échanges se sont renforcés au fil du temps sur le thème du sport, de la gastronomie et de l’Art, formalisés par un jumelage le 10 juin 2016.

C’est donc naturellement que Troyes a accepté l’invitation de Brescia à s’associer à l’exposition GEMINA. Arte contemporanea da Darmstadt, Logroño, Troyes organisée par El C.AR.M.E. - Centro Arti Multiculturali Etnosociale.

Pour cet événement, Anna Madia, artiste italienne installée à Troyes, a ainsi exposé une installation de vingt-cinq huiles sur papier.

Chaque œuvre, «peinture nocturne» dont le noir et blanc évoque le souvenir évanescent des rêves au réveil, a présenté une facette inédite de la Mecchaniche della Meraviglia. Une collaboration qui nourrit les liens forts qui unissent nos deux villes.

Anna Madia Anna Madia nasce a Torino nel 1976. Vive e lavora a Troyes in Aube.

Si diploma in pittura all’Accademia di Belle Arti Albertina di Torino nel 2002.

Finalista al Premio Cairo nel 2006.

Finalista al BP Portrait Award alla National Portrait Gallery di Londra nel 2007.

Premio del Rinascimento dell’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Londra.

Titolare durante l’anno accademico 2008/2009 di un assegno di ricerca come tutor del corso di pittura dell’Accademia Albertina. Nel 2011 viene invitata a Lo Stato dell’Arte, 54 ° Biennale di Venezia - Padiglione del Piemonte, Castiglia di Saluzzo, Italia. Dal 2014 al 2016 Anna Madia è stata intervenente per il Centro Unesco, la Scuola Municipale di Belle Arti della città di Troyes e la Scuola Superiore di Design Troyes. Nel 2014 vince la borsa di studio Aiuto alla creazione di Champagne Ardenne.

I ritratti non sono tali. Sono distaccati dalla propria identità. Gli occhi sono cancellati, mascherati, i loro occhi sono rivolti a interiorità cariche di misteri.

Se la luce sgorga dagli occhi, non proietta alcuna verità sullo spettatore.

Il filo, la lana, il crine dei materassi svuotati, i capelli portano forti cariche simboliche che si modellano e si evolvono ogni volta in modo diverso da un tavolo all’altro.

La pesantezza di una parrucca sproporzionata pesa sulla faccia superiore come una massa spettrale pronta a salire portando con sé una certa energia. Il tappeto si avvolge nel mezzo della figura, privandolo della luce e facilita visioni fantasmagoriche e oniriche. L’intimità è davanti ai nostri occhi sia presenti che sfuggenti.

She graduetes in painting at Albertina Academy of Fine Arts in Turin in 2002.

Finalist for the Cairo Award in 2006. Finalist for the BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery of London in 2007. She wins the Prize of Renaissance of the Italian Institute of Culture in London. Holder, during the academic year 2008/2009, of a research grant as a tutor of the painting course at the Albertina Academy. In 2011 she is invited at Lo Stato dell’Arte 54° Biennale of Venice - Padiglione del Piemonte, Castiglia di Saluzzo, Italia. From 2014 to 2016 Anna Madia was an intervener for the Unesco Center, the Municipal School of Fine Arts in Troyes and the Design high school of Troyes. In 2014 she wins the scholarship Help to creation of Champagne Ardenne.

The portraits are not so. They are detached from their own identity. The eyes are erased, masked, their eyes are turned to interiority laden with mysteries.

If the light gushes from the eyes, it doesn’t project any truth on the spectator.

The thread, the wool, the horsehair of the empty mattresses, the hair brings strong symbolic charges that are modeled and evolving every time in a different way from a table to another. The heaviness of a disproportionate wig weights on the upper face like a ghostly mass ready to rise, bringing with it a certain energy. The carpet is wrapping in the middle of the figure, depriving it from the light and ease phantasmagorical and dreamlike visions. The intimacy is in front of our eyes both present and elusive.
