Warm wishes

We all do foolish things for love——and not just when we’re in love. Here’s an example: Last fall, as my best friend was counting down the last few days until she was finally the wife of the leggy blonde she’d been with for three years, I was hard at work making her bouquets. I should have started a bit earlier (so I could have bowed out when I realized the work involved crafting nearly 200 paper flowers), but, in the name of love, there I sat for five consecutive evenings, punching out 1,000 petals for the bride and her two “best women” (myself included).

The morning of the wedding, it rained. The afternoon of the wedding,

the rain had given way to a shiver-inducing, 40-degree chill that nearly moved the outdoor ceremony in. The brides left the ultimate decision to their four best women, and we, foolishly, decided to stick it out. Come wedding time, there we stood, trembling with the couple but somehow warmed by our 15-year friendship and the community of support they’d built. It’s clichéd, but it’s true: Love can weather any storm.

That’s

what’s in store in this issue: four weddings, four seasons. One bride’s plan to have her winter wedding (page 77) at her family’s farm was derailed when she realized, weather-wise, it wasn’t feasible, but the atmosphere at the back-up venue proved to be an even more intimate choice. A summer bride (page 58) worried about rain the whole morning of her wedding, but it held off, and a distant rainbow made for some picturesque post-ceremony photos. In other words, your wedding day isn’t about the place or the things——it’s about the love. And, if you’re lucky, the rest will just fall into place, like it was meant to be.——Caite White

Want your own moon booth? Contact artist Shelby Fischer to ask about rentals: shelbyfischer@ mac.com.

Sharing is caring Five ideas we love Weddings are all about tradition, but not everything you incorporate into your big day has to stick to the status quo. Consider these ideas from local brides your “something borrowed.”

Getting moony Everything old is new again. That’s why this paper moon booth is so appealing. There’s no giant clown glasses or feather boas; it’s just you and the moon, reminiscent of early 20th century snapshots that often came out of fairs and carnivals. “My mom has collected moons and stars in all forms as long as I can remember, including antique photographs of people posing with the crescent moon,” said bride Danielle Stephens. “I loved the idea of having something similar at our wedding.” Danielle’s mom, Charlottesville-based artist Shelby Fischer, had the moon and backdrop built and painted especially for the couple, and they hired an extra photographer to capture guests in it.

We’ve been seeing a lot of bars lately— brownies, pickles, waffles—but liked this cigar bar best. This bride and groom had a cigar roller on site!

Dancing shoes Don’t get us wrong—we know high heels are the finishing touch to any bride’s ensemble, but this groom’s shoes are worth mentioning, too. Not only do they add an unexpected pop of color, but they pretty perfectly coordinate with his bowtie, the wedding flowers, and the bridesmaids’ attire. Dude’s got style.

Here’s a gift that keeps on giving after the wedding is over: coupons! Ashley and Will Mauldin asked a few local businesses, like Boylan Heights and Ben & Jerry’s, to personalize coupons for their guests, and the businesses obliged. The result? Easy (free!) additions to wedding welcome bags. “Explain that it’s a good way to get their name out there,” advised Ashley, “because our guests’ only memory of the weekend would be our wedding and the places they visited.”

Picnic break

KATIE STOOPS

After married friends had advised them to take a quiet moment together at some point during their wedding day, Sarah and Michael Wronsky decided to set aside a little time after the ceremony but before the reception—for a picnic! “We were totally alone in a gorgeous setting, having a mini private celebration before a big party,” said Sarah. “We reflected on the beautiful ceremony we just had, replayed the events from our points of view, filled each other in on what our mornings had been like before the ceremony and slow danced in the field to our song, ‘The Rain Song’ by Led Zeppelin. It was so special.” To pull it off, their planner, Cody Grannis of Amore Events, took the idea and ran with it, styling a sweet scene complete with crocheted blanket, picnic basket, vintage camera and a few snacks from caterer A Pimento. Sarah has a few words of advice for brides who want to incorporate a styled scene into their own wedding: “It doesn’t necessarily have to be elaborate. The purpose is to take some alone time, just the two of you, to reflect and celebrate privately,” she said. “Even if you don’t have a planner, ask your caterer to set some food aside for you a little early or pre-pack a basket yourself, grab a blanket and celebrate!”—Caite White

THE ETIQUETTE

Here’s a tip Should you add gratuity for your vendors? et’s talk turkey. Over the wedding planning process, there’s a lot of money exchanging hands and, as you near the end, you might be wondering: Should I tip? We asked local planner Julianne Giuliano, of SOIREE., to offer some pointers.

L

Photographer

Reception staff

Protocol: It’s not expected, but recommended, especially if you had a great experience. How much? $100-200 per shooter (the primary shooter should always get the higher tip). When? At the end of the reception.

Planner

Wedding delivery/ setup

Protocol: This depends on the venue and the catering. At a venue with its own catering services, you’re likely paying a service fee already, which ranges from 18-22 percent. “In this instance, the tip is at the client’s discretion and is not expected,” said Giuliano. If you hire an outside company to bring catering in, tipping is expected. Giuliano says to check your contract to make sure a fee isn’t built in. If it is, but it is low (2-3 percent), you may want to add a tip. How much? 15-20 percent of the total bill. Or, break it down by bartender ($25-50), server ($25), manager ($100-200) and chef ($50-100). When? At the end of the night. Again, leave this with your planner, since you’ll be dancing the night away.

Protocol: Giuliano said, “This is obviously tough for us because people are asking about tipping ourselves. I would say that for the most part, planners are not expecting a tip.” That said, Giuliano estimated that 60 percent of her clients do give her a little something at the end of the night. How much? If you decide to tip, 15 percent of the planner’s fee (or up to $500) is suitable and generous. “A personal gift is also very nice,” she offered. When? After the wedding is over!

Protocol: The folks at SOIREE. only recommend tipping setup staff if there’s something large (like a tent) to install. “We don’t recommend tipping for the delivery of the cake, flowers, sound system, etc.,” said Giuliano. “Usually companies are charging for those deliveries.” How much? $10-20 per person. When? After they’re finished installing. Have your planner hand them an envelope—you’ll be busy getting ready!

Hair and makeup Protocol: Gratuity for hairstylist and makeup artists is expected, just as if you were at a salon for a regular appointment. How much? 15-20 percent of the total services. When? Give the tip to the lead stylist at the end of the service.

Protocol: It is always optional and expected, as transportation companies do not include gratuity for their drivers. How much? $50-100 per driver. Drivers who are with you a longer amount of time should receive the higher amount. When? At the end of the service.

Protocol: Most officiants won’t accept a tip, so Giuliano recommends considering a donation to their congregation or place of worship. In fact, some churches or other religious facilities will require this if it hosts your ceremony. How much? $100 is recommended. If your officiant is hired, this is on top of their fee. When? At the end of the service.

Florist CHRISTIAN AGHA

Ceremony musicians

24  C-VILLE Weddings

Protocol: This is optional, but always recommended. How much? A DJ would get $100-150 and band members would get $25-50 per musician. You could also tip the leader of the band 10-15 percent of the total bill and let him divide it up amongst the musicians. When? At the end of the night.

Transportation

Officiant

Protocol: Tipping musicians is optional, but Giuliano always recommends it. How much? $25 per musician. When? At the end of the service.

Band or DJ

Protocol: The florist will not expect a tip. However, if you had an exceptional experience, feel free. How much? “We recommend a nicer personal gift or 10-15 percent of the total fee,” said Giuliano. When? At the end of the service.—Caite White

Are sapphires the new diamond?

W

hen Lee Robertson slipped a ring onto Kristen Wallace’s finger to seal the deal last December, he knew his choice of stone, a sapphire, was unconventional. But that was part of the appeal. With the diamond ring long established as the quintessential symbol of engagement, brides have come to expect a certain formula: little black box + big sparkling diamond = the perfect proposal. However, as more and more non-diamond engagement rings start to surface, the traditional markers of marriage may be shifting. Kristen’s now-husband first brought up the possibility of a gemstone ring after reading more about the diamond industry and becoming disenchanted with its targeted advertising. “That’s what the jewelers and everyone tells you the engagement ring is. It’s what everyone expects you to do,” Kristen said. Instead, Lee designed the ring to showcase a cushion cut (square with rounded corners) sapphire stone, a look that one local jewelry store manager said is a growing trend. “We are starting to see couples who are looking for something more nontraditional,” said Rob Matthews of Fink’s Jewelers. Gemstones offer a more personalized style, the chance to add some In ancient and color, and are often less expensive medieval times, the than a diamond of the same size. sapphire symbolized Of course, even with the small hope and faith, and upsurge of gemstone engagement was believed to bring protection, good rings, this trend hasn’t yet overfortune and spiritual thrown the traditional engageinsight. The bride and groom who cut this red velvet cake from A Pimento had hired local donut truck Carpe Donut to provide dessert for guests, but wanted something small they could serve each other for fun. It was made with pureed beets (instead of food coloring) and the icing, said A Pimento owner Gay Beery, was a perfect meeting between cream cheese and buttercream (it had the slight tang of cream cheese). “A favorite cake of mine, as well!” Beery said.—Caite White

hile shopping around for the perfect dress is half the fun for many brides, for Amanda Powers, it also meant making the ultimate decision came more easily: “[My grandmother’s] dress ended up having many of the design elements I learned I was looking for,” Amanda said. She made a few adjustments—removed the sleeves, leveled the waistline, added a belt, and cut the back to create a slight V—but the 1951 gown retained its original neckline, a favorite detail of Amanda’s. “It’s architectural yet delicate and feminine,” she said. She paired it with a Brussels lace veil and had the seamstress sew forget-me-nots behind the belt. The result was a beautiful dress Amanda said she felt lucky to wear. “My grandmother was a lovely lady,” Amanda said. “She was smart, curious, caring, loving, devoted to her family—quite a role model, and what better person to channel when starting a new chapter of your life?”—Caite White

“It was personal. It was sentimental. It was a combination of all the dresses I [had tried on and] loved.” Something borrowed that many of the inquiries she received were about borrowing, not buying. “And the idea was born!” said co-founder Ashley Steele.

COURTESY OF BORROWING MAGNOLIA

Second to finding the right partner, finding the right dress can take a girl years (er, months). And, if you’re on a budget, finding your dream dress for less may actually be more of a nightmare. Enter Borrowing Magnolia, a Web-based business owned by three industry veterans (two of whom are UVA grads!) that allows you to find your perfect designer frock at a reasonable price. After co-founder Cali Brutz got engaged last year, she purchased a dress for her big day, but soon had buyer’s remorse. She listed the dress online, but realized

From Jenny Packham to Monique Lhuillier, each hand-picked dress is available to rent or buy, and it’ll come to you professionally cleaned and having passed a test for quality and condition. But here’s the part we like: Try on as many dresses as you want before deciding. Choose three you like, pay $99 (which will be applied to your purchase or rental), and send them back before the five-day deadline. If you love one, it’ll be prepped and sent right back. If you don’t, repeat the process (the next $99 counts toward your purchase or rental, too) and

try again. (Steele said you don’t have to choose three— if you find just one dress you like and want to try it on, that’ll only run you $35.) The downside? You can’t make alterations to your dress (but you can ask the company’s concierge about minor changes, which they can sometimes accommodate). And this isn’t for procrastinators or indecisive brides who need a quick fix. With all the back-and-forths, you’ll want to ensure your dress arrives long before you say “I do!” Visit borrowing magnolia.com to get started.—Caite White

hat could be loftier than Monticello? Well, at least physically, Montalto is—by 410'. The neighboring mountain was once part of Jefferson’s holdings and these days, after decades in private ownership, it’s returned to the fold. In 2004, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation bought the mountain and the grand house, called Repose, that sits atop it. Of course, as one of the highest points in Albemarle County, Montalto has jaw-dropping vistas in every direction, including a view down to Monticello. Repose, built as a getaway in 1908 by the Patterson family, is beautifully sited on the narrow, rounded ridgetop, and though the setting tends to steal the show, the house itself is no slouch. “This is a prime example of American architecture,” said Leah Sumrall, who oversees special events at Monticello. With prominent gables, rows of squat white columns and a stone exterior, the house is both elegant and homey. After serving as a country home for the Pattersons—who also ranched cattle and sheep on Montalto—Repose was occupied for years by a livein groundskeeper and his family. It then served as housing for law and medical students at UVA. The Foundation renovated the house in 2009 with the goal of “getting back to its early 20th century charm,” said Sumrall. That meant not only restoration after years of student occupants, but the creation of a luxurious facility for conferences, corporate retreats and, of course, weddings. The conservatory, which stretches along the west side of the house and is lined by floor-to-ceiling windows, grew during the

renovation to accommodate more guests. It opens onto a stone terrace that seems to spill out into space, as the mountain gives way to views of Charlottesville and the Blue Ridge. The grounds at Montalto include mature sycamore and maple trees, pristine lawns and some selective design interventions—like the new semicircular rock wall that defines the Overlook, where rarefied wedding ceremonies can take advantage of the Monticello view. Despite the almost primitive feel—mountain, rock, sky—the spot is discretely wired for electricity. Said Sumrall, “We have worked to ensure this space stays what it is. When you’re up here it feels incredibly private. You feel like you’re completely alone.”—Erika Howsare

Bold blooms A vibrant flower story brightens up a happy day Inspiration comes from the most unlikely places. At least, that was true for Shelby Colby, who saw a print in a friend’s apartment and knew she wanted to emulate the color palette in her flowers on her big day. The painting, “Anemone Garden” by Kim Parker, depicts a bright melange of blooms. “I love all of the pinks, yellows, reds and greens,” Shelby said. (Shelby’s bridesmaids’ dresses, a bold red, took inspiration from the painting, too.) “I wanted the wedding to be bursting with color.”—Caite White

Something old Shelby included a colored pin that belonged to her grandmother on the stem of her bouquet. “I never got to meet her, but apparently she loved bright, bold colors.”

Shelby and her husband, Douglas, had a $6,000 flower budget, which they used on centerpieces, bouquets for the bride and bridesmaids and boutonnieres. The bridesmaids’ bouquets doubled as centerpieces for the head table, too.

Bridal bouquet Dahlias, blackberries, seeded eucalyptus, zinnias, hot pink garden roses, Cherry Brandy roses, peach garden roses, seeded eucalyptus and billy balls.

Bridesmaids’ bouquets Spray roses, Cherry Brandy roses, billy balls, mini green hydrangea, dahlias and seeded eucalyptus.

Boutonnieres Combinations of dahlia buds, blackberries, seeded eucalyptus, spray roses and billy balls.

Centerpieces Blackberries, peaches, Cherry Brandy roses, garden roses, hydrangea, dahlias, spray roses, billy balls, zinnias, seeded eucalyptus and assorted seasonal foliage.

The replacements We asked Lindsay Coffey of Pat’s Floral Designs, which handled all of Shelby’s flowers, to recommend alternatives for fall, winter or spring brides who want to copy this look.—C.W. Dahlias: These are summer/fall flowers. In spring, try peonies. In winter, amaryllis. Zinnias: Another summer/fall flower. Replace these with parrot tulips in winter and spring. Blackberries: Only available for a very short time in the summer, and work best in bouquets when you catch them right before they’re ripe. Coffey says a good subsitute would be hypericum berries, which are available anytime. Roses, billy balls and seeded eucalyptus: Available year-round.

The bride wore a locket with her dad’s picture inside. “My dad passed away two years ago, and it felt so good to have his picture so close to my heart on our wedding day,” Julia said. “It was more personal than just having a photo of him on a table somewhere.” Belle Haven’s owner, Jan Glennie-Smith crafted the bouquets, flower crown and boutonnieres.

here will be a lot of special things you’ll recall when you look back on your big day, but as the specific memories fade, it’ll be the overall feeling you remember most. Was it hurried? Was it quaint? Was it exciting? For Julia Obermiller, it was magic. The couple wanted a romantic yet eclectic wedding, which meant incorporating plenty of cool vintage pieces and their love of the countryside. For the former, they rented from Paisley & Jude, a furniture vendor that supplied ornate and colorful pieces to the ceremony and cocktail areas. For the latter, they chose Belle Haven, a local venue known for its lush gardens and rustic red barn lending a bohemian tone to the day. “Upon visiting Belle Haven, we were struck with a magical feeling; so many of our guests commented on that same ‘magical’ feeling,” Julia said. “It’s almost hard to describe.”— Caite White

YOUNG LOVE Julia and Creighton met in the seventh grade, briefly dated during their sophomore year of high school (“I’m pretty sure Creighton never got over me,” Julia joked), and would run into each other from time to time but didn’t reconnect until 2012. A year later, they were engaged.

Alli Blount and Chris Molitoris September 6, 2014

U

nlike a lot of brides, prior to getting engaged, Alli Blount hadn’t put a lot of thought into what she envisioned for her perfect wedding. “I found myself rather overwhelmed at first by the number of choices to be made and how each element of the wedding would add up to the perfect end result,” she said. But she did know one thing: the color scheme would include mint. She looked at a few weddings online, and soon a pale peach, blush, and mint palette came into focus. Trump Winery, with its white carriage house and green vineyard views, fit right in with the couple’s plan. “It seemed that the soft, pastel color scheme would really work and not take away from that view,” Alli said. Other wedding details took shape after settling on the color scheme, too, like the custom invitations from Rock Paper Scissors and artist Megan Wells’ calligraphied signage, menus and seating chart. “The watercolor bar menus describing our specialty cocktails were particularly awesome,” Alli said. And, to top it all off, there was a rainbow! Guess you could say it was perfect.—Caite White

hat guided the date and tone of Megan Hensley and Walter Slawski’s wedding? Someone else’s wedding! Having worked in the food industry together for years (Walter owns The Shebeen Pub & Braai and The Catering Outfit), the couple was familiar with the ins and outs of planning one’s big day. So, they picked a free weekend in the middle of a busy month, and decided to get married at home. Once the date was settled, everything else just fell into place. “We took inspiration from the hundreds of weddings we have been so honored to be a part of,” Megan said. “Embracing the season, our wedding was in earthy autumn, with wood-grilled shellfish, lost wax-cast silver sculpture and lots of red wine!” Having seen the chaos that often ensues on wedding days, Megan knew what she was in for with her own, but everything went fine. “The calm and serenity of my day seemed the impossible culmination of everyone’s efforts.” We’ll chalk that up to trade secrets.—Caite White

Isabelle Abbot and Andrew Baldwin December 22, 2012

sabelle Abbot had never considered a winter wedding, but after settling on a date, she realized winter had all the things she loved—fires and candlelight, greenery and snow, and the soft colors of the grass and bare trees. Of course, a winter wedding also means fairly chilly temperatures, which meant she and now-husband Andrew couldn’t have their ceremony on her family’s mountain property, where they’d pictured. But it didn’t derail them. Instead, they turned to King Family, a local vineyard run by family friends and only minutes from Isabelle’s childhood home. They filled the rustic space with natural elements like moss-covered stumps, pinecones and acorns and a fire burning all night. There were wintery touches elsewhere, too: The couple cut thin slices of stumps for each of their six mini-cakes to sit on; Hot Pots provided different evergreen trees—hemlock, cedar, spruce —to make the room feel more intimate; mason jar lanterns lined the aisle and hearth to provide a bit of twinkle. “The overall effect was one of warmth and light that felt completely in keeping with the season,” Isabelle said.—Caite White

SEEING SPARKS The couple met through mutual friends at a bonfire party in Charlottesville when Isabelle was home visiting from grad school. Though the initial meeting was “not the smoothest,” as Isabelle put it, when she moved back that following summer, her best friend reconnected them at Veritas Vineyards’ Starry Nights. “After that, we were pretty inseparable,” she said.

little skeptical about what was happening... I kept thinking is this it? Is he going to propose tonight? Jon: We drove into Crozet to Beaver Creek. We sat by the lake where I brought cheese, crackers and wine. For the next 30 minutes, I began sharing with Lara how much I loved her and why she was so special to me.

Jon: To her surprise we were spending the weekend in Charlottesville! We drove down on a Friday morning and arrived with only one hour to get ready. I told her that we had dinner plans at a nice resturant.

Lara: There was a slight mist and fog was rolling over the mountains in the distance. .. I’m not sure there could have been a more romantic setting.

Lara: I thought we were going straight to Virginia Beach, so when he told me this I figured it just had to be apart of my Christmas present. At this point I was a

on Brady and Lara Coleman met in 2008 at a youth camp that brought together leaders from different high schools in the Virginia Beach area. Unfortunately, they were both dating other people at the time, but struck up a friendship that would develop over the next few years. In 2011, after they’d both returned from separate trips to Africa and Haiti, they found themselves single and ready for something more, so Jon asked Lara on a proper date. She was nervous, but “When he showed up at my door looking handsome, all dressed up in a suit and he smiled, I was instantly reminded that it was Jon, my dear friend,” Lara said. “Fate had finally brought us together.” When Jon moved to D.C. for a job two months ago, Lara stayed behind to finish work and make a proper transition up north. They’d take trips back and forth to see each other, but one trip in particular was a bit different...

Jon: When I saw Lauren [the photographer he’d asked to secretly capture the moment] out of the corner of my eye I knew it was time. We stood up and as Lara turned to grab the picnic basket, I kneeled down. I told her that she was the love of my life and asked if she would marry me. Lara: All that came out was “no!” I think in my head I was saying, “No way it’s happening!” but thankfully, he didn’t pay any attention to me and kept going.
