Love and marriage

“Being surrounded by love and friendship.” That’s what one local bride (see her wedding on page 55) says was the best part of her wedding. And we agree. Because, when you get right down to it, it’s not the party favors, the signature cocktail, or the color of your garter that matters. It’s the fact that your wedding day might be the only time you have every person that matters to you in one room—and celebrating you, no less! Of course, those other things are important too (and may mean the difference between a wedding that’s tacky and one that’s top-drawer), but let us at least make it easy on you, so you don’t lose perspective. In this issue, you’ll find the five questions you should ask your photographer, caterer, florist, and stylist (p.15), a guide to reusing your mom’s wedding dress (p.11), and a few other ideas we love (p.25). On page 53, three couples punch up their nuptial color palette and two others make a case for having your wedding at home (p.73). In other

words, we’ve got it covered. You just sit back, relax, and feel the love.—Caite White

BIG DAY IDEA

CRAMER PHOTO

My parents were married in 1972, and their outfits reflected the discotastic time of their nuptials. My dad bore a striking resemblance to a Bee Gee in his powder blue tux, and my mom’s dress had a high, ruffled collar and long sleeves that were actually bell bottoms—on her arms. When it came time for my own wedding some 30 years later, I really wanted to wear her dress—but I really did not want to wear a turtleneck to my outdoor summer wedding or require a disco ball to be suspended above me as I

walked down the aisle. I was amazed, when I took the dress to an alterations expert, that the magician disguised as a seamstress was able to make a couple of relatively simple changes and turn it into the dress of my dreams—with the added bonus of having the sentimental value of wearing my mom’s wedding dress. The lesson? Anything is possible at the hands of the right seamstress. Briana Shelton, winner of the Charlottesville Free Wedding Project (she got married November 11, 2011!), said that she didn’t know she would want to wear her mom’s dress until after she had tried it on and found that it fit

almost perfectly (she had simple alterations done at West Main Bridal). For Shelton, it was a meaningful way to honor “the importance of family,” but she stressed that it is not necessarily the right choice for every bride. If you’re considering wearing your mother’s wedding dress, “Try it on, but if it doesn’t feel right, don’t go for it,” she said. Ultimately, do what makes you feel the most radiant on your special day.— Mary Rekosh

Wedding Planner Let’s play 20 questions At the start of your planning process, you’re no doubt embarking on a long journey filled with questions. We asked four local vendors—a photographer, caterer, stylist, and florist—to give us the top five questions brides should ask before they commit.—Caite White

JEN FARIELLO

Jack Looney of Jack Looney Photography (249-6266) 1. How do I go about gaining control of my digital files (if the photographer captures the day digitally) and how long will it take? 2. Can you tell me more about your style and approach in the event that the weather goes bad at my venue? 3. What’s your strategy with a second shooter, if any? 4. Can you tell me a little about your back-up plan should you have a family crisis or emergency? 5. To make sure we’re a good match, tell me a little about your style and personality (more direct, discreet, Type A, etc.).

Be sure your stylist knows the difference between formal (like this!) and prom.

Gay Beery of A Pimento Catering (971-7720) 1. What does the price include? Setup? Cleanup? Only food? 20 QUESTIONS continued on page 17

2. Have you done something like this before in this kind of setting? 3. What is your philosophy on the quality of food you provide? Is it local? Where do you source your ingredients? 4. Is what we’re envisioning reasonably achievable? 5. Are you going to be there on the day of the event?

AARON WATSON PHOTOGRAPHY

Michele Durham of Bristles Hair Design & Day Spa (977-1411) 1. If the stylist specializes in bridal hair styles, not just formal occassion? In other words, will I look like a bride or like I’m headed to prom? 2. Does the stylist have a portfolio of their work from other weddings? 3. Does the salon itself cater to bridal parties being in the space during the services?

The flowers you want aren’t in season? Ask your florist about a budget-friendly version in the same shape and color.

“Fun shots are possible no matter what the weather,” says Jack Looney.

Joey Strickler of Floral Images (971-4744) 1. How can you maximize my budget? 2. How many weddings do you take in a weekend? 3. Do you have a portfolio of your work I can see? 4. Can you do a mock up of my centerpieces, bouquets, etc., and the cost involved? 5. Are you familiar with my wedding venue?

4. Does the team require a trial appointment for the bride? 5. When is the best time to schedule wedding day appointments? How far in advance do we need to commit?

ou want to look your absolute best for your wedding day, but trying to figure out what beauty treatments to do when is just one more stressor in a long list of things to think about before your big day. Maintain your exercise regime (or pump it up if you’ve been slacking). “If you have fair lashes, you may wish to have them tinted, which will minimize the need for mascara,” said Hornsby. One week before Get a final haircut (or trim) and any color you might want. Best to go with your usual style. Wax your bikini line, legs, and eyebrows. One to two months before Hire a makeup artist and have an in-person consultation. If you’re planning to do your own makeup, get a makeover at a department store with a consultant from your favorite brand and purchase what you’ll need. Be sure to mention any plans for tanning. “Remember to take some pictures with the makeup on so any necessary color adjustments can be made,” said make- up artist Madison Hornsby of Moxie Hair and Body Lounge.

Hire a hairstylist and take any hair adornments for a hair planning appointment. “Ask your stylist if your hair should be freshly washed or one-day dirty for your wedding day hair appointment,” suggested Holladay Spa hairstylist Patrick Butler. Have your eyebrows professionally shaped. Moxie Esthetician Cathy Night suggested having a deep cleansing facial, “so that any reactions will be long gone before your wedding.” Health and Wellness Director at the Spa at Keswick Hall, Colette Long said, “If you only have the time or budget for one facial, have a regular facial with exfoliation and extraction a week before, but if you want a nice glowing facial (one that hydrates), do it the week of your wedding.” To keep your pearly whites bright, cut down on red wine, tea, and

date, close enough that you won’t have regrowth, but long enough out that any irritation will subside.” If you’re new to waxing or you need to allow time for other beauty treatments closer to the big day, go one week prior to your wedding. Keep in mind that “wax and body scrubs/ glows should be done before any sunless tanning products are applied,” Long said. A stress-reducing massage is a good idea too, and can be done up to the day of your wedding. Two days before Sunless tanning, post-body polish. One day before Avoid trying any new products or new foods in case of unknown allergies. Have a professional pedicure and manicure. “Have a body glow and moisturizing facial to give you that beautiful radiance,” said Long. Wash your hair as your hairstylist recommends. Day of Drink plenty of water. Avoid wearing clothing or undergarments that might leave markings on your skin where it would show with the cut of your dress (as in, don’t wear a bra with tight straps when your gown is strapless). Wear a top that zips or buttons up the front to avoid the necessity of pulling a garment over your head and potentially turning your ’do into a don’t. Bring a scarf to drape over your face to prevent makeup from smudging your dress. Breathe. You look amazing!—Mary Burruss

Help!

Beauty emergency! Use these quick fixes in case something goes wrong, despite your careful preparation. Streaky self tan? Exfoliate the area vigorously. Need more help after that? Soak in a hot bath and rub dark streaks with half a lemon. For a super quick fix, even out the paler parts with a bronzer. Unforseen breakouts? Dab a non-gel toothpaste on the pimple the night before. For day-of breakouts, dab with Visine. Foundation flounder? If you purchased your foundation when you were tan and now it’s too dark, use a sponge to dab moisturizer on top of it to tone it down and thin it out. Curl drop? If the gorgeous curls your hairstylist created are falling, just go with it! Brush them out to make longer, looser curls. They’ll be just as stunning. Bikini burn? If you decided to try a leg wax and your skin feels burned, take an anti-inflammatory and gently apply aloe to the irritated area. Mascara rivers? If you forgot your waterproof mascara and went from blushing bride to Madonna wannabe during the ceremony, gently dab (don’t swipe!) underneath the eye with a tissue, then use a moistened cotton swab to wipe off any remaining residue. Reapply concealer or foundation then lightly powder.—M.B.

As Charlottesville-based psychologists Drs. Phyllis Koch-Sheras and Peter Sheras say, falling in love is easy—it’s sustaining a fulfilling relationship that’s the challenge. The couple’s new book, Lifelong Love: 4 Steps to Creating and Maintaining an Extraordinary Relationship (Harlequin, $16.95), is a comprehensive guide to marital bliss. In it, they tout their four-step “Couple Power” program, comprising the four Cs: Commitment, Communication, Cooperation, and Community. These, they say, are the keys to a successful—and long-lasting—marriage. And they’d know—they’ve been married for more than 30 years! For more information, visit couplepower.com.—C.W.

uys, there are plenty of great stag party ideas that don’t require a single nipple tassle or lap dance—after all, your bride-to-be will probably shower you with those things down the road in order to “spice things up” after you have been married for a few years, right? Totally. In the meantime, here are a few alternatives to the traditional drink-’til-you-puke-onthe-stripper bash. 1. Head for the great outdoors Choose your adventure: camping, hiking, kayaking, fishing… Nothing says “macho men bonding” like returning to nature, even if the closest you’ve been to a lake recently is the rowing machine at the gym. Grab your buddies and leave the urban comforts of home in favor of the rugged charm of the wilderness.

Hidden bonus: Somebody is guaranteed to chicken out, and you can ridicule him mercilessly over post-stunt beers.

3. Jump, we say! Again, putting oneself in physical danger seems to be good clean fun for most men, so why not go skydiving or bungee jumping, or something equally death-defying for your bachelor party?

4. Take a lesson! Bond with your buds over a new learning experience. We’re talking fly fishing or archery here, guys, not ballroom dancing or quiche making. You have the rest of your life to have

JACK LOONEY

2. Get behind the wheel One rule of thumb for the Y-Chromosome set: Anything that can move fast and is potentially life-threatening will be a hit. Renting Go-Karts, All-TerrainVehicles, Jetskis or something else fast and dangerous will provide great entertainment for a group of dudes. Just remember to save the brewhahahas until you’re no longer behind the wheel.

your masculinity assaulted by taking these kinds of classes with your wife. 5. May the Best Man (or the groom, or some other dude…) win Since guys are often compelled to compete with one another, try incorporating that spirit into the bachelor party? Think softball game (infield keg optional but encouraged), poker night, or paintball.–M.R.

You’ve heard of honeymoon registries (where, instead of gifts, guests can contribute to your post-nuptial trip, purchasing everything from your hotel room to the daiquiris you’ll drink at sunset), but a new website is taking the concept one step further. Hatch My House enables gifters to contribute funds toward your down payment, renovation, or home decor. my dress ($500) given how delicate and flowy the dress is. In a muslin fitting, the designer sends a sample of your dress made out of muslin. I then had a fitting at Hitched, where the seamstress noted any adjustments that needed to be made on the muslin, took some pictures and it went back to the designer and my dress was made from there so it would fit perfectly. After that, it only needed to be hemmed and the seamstress at Hitched worked on the bustle. How many dresses she tried on: This was the third dress I tried on on a quick shopping outing with my matron of honor at a trunk show in Tennessee, but I waited until I was back in D.C. with my mom before making a final decision. Hitched didn’t carry this particular dress at the time, so they shipped in a sample of it for me. Before the sample arrived, I tried on about 10 different dresses with my mom and changed my mind about three times, but once the sample arrived and I slipped it on, my mom and I immediately agreed that this was the one. Why she chose it: I wanted something easy and comfortable, yet chic, unexpected, and unique. This dress met all of the above and I hadn’t seen anything like it in magazines or on blogs. Favorite detail about it: The beautiful lace detail at the top, the sleeves, and down the back. It’s basically delicate pieces of lace that have been sewn onto the lightest, sheerest layer of tulle. Anita Gupta at Maliha Creations recreated this lace look on the tiers of our delicious wedding cake and my mom found some old family lace

that looked similar that was wrapped around the bottom of my bouquet. How it worked out: I loved it! The dress was so comfortable and light, I could have worn it all week! I also got so many sweet compliments from friends and family about how beautiful and unique it was.

Why she chose it: I was looking for something simple but with subtle elegant details. It wasn’t too formal; I didn’t want a big poufy skirt, but I also didn’t want anything too form-fitting. Favorite detail about it: The delicate lace on the back which complemented my mom’s veil perfectly! And the pockets, of course. How it worked out: I loved my dress! I felt like myself in it. I used the pockets and I love that I didn’t have to adjust anything throughout the night. I danced the whole time completely comfortably!

I was having a very small ceremony, so it fit the occasion. Favorite detail about it: I liked that it wasn’t so traditional. It was very well made. I loved the quality, construction, and lace detail. How it worked out: It was perfect! It was loose like a shift dress should be so I was very comfortable all night. It was the perfect dress for the occasion and it might actually be a wedding dress that I could wear again in the future.

ried. Luckily, it fit. I don’t know what I would have done if it didn’t. How many dresses she tried on: I had one that I was going to wear before I bought this one but there was nothing “wedding” about it. I decided I didn’t feel like a bride, so I found this one and ordered it immediately. Why she chose it: We got married in February and we wanted it to be outside. It was pretty mild that week but I still wanted something that covered my arms. Plus,

or a black sash or a fitted under-layer and a lace overlay—or rosettes for that matter! But I loved every detail about my dress. Especially the fact that the lining was made out of the softest silk I have ever felt. How it worked out: Absolutely incredible. I felt amazing in that dress. The one thing that Vera didn’t think about though is what a halter top does to a girl’s neck. Luckily my incredible photographer MacGyvered my dress for me and used some padding from a hanger to pad the halter

on my neck. That way I could dance the night away without any discomfort. Then, in the last 30 minutes of the wedding, I had a friend come up to me with a glass of red wine in their hand and, in slow motion, I saw as they accidentally spilled the entire glass on my dress. I had a moment of sheer shock and then shrugged it off, told them not to worry, and proceeded to enjoy the last few minutes of the evening. Since the stain didn’t come out, I am going to dye the dress just so I can wear it again!

had this idea that I would design my own dress, but when I told that idea to my Mom, she said, “I want you to know what Vera Wang feels like.” Who am I to argue with that? Designer: Vera Wang Alterations: $500. The incredible woman who altered my dress, Aida, brought so much to the experience. Not only did she alter Kate Winslet’s Oscar dress the year she won, but countless others as well. When she was done with the alterations, my then fiancé and I went to pick it up at her workshop. She greeted us with a huge hug and a table set up for brunch. We ate, exchanged stories, drank Turkish coffee and then she read my fortune in the coffee grounds. As I was leaving she lent me her fur shawl. She said it would go great with my dress just in case it was cold in Virginia. How many dresses she tried on: Six or seven. The dress I bought was the first one I tried on. Why she chose it: It is the most epic dress I have ever seen. It was so bold and spectacular! The dress was so incredible, in fact, that I didn’t know if I could pull it off. That’s the only reason I tried on other dresses. But once you know, you know. Favorite detail about it: I was never one of those girls who dreamed about her wedding dress, or wedding for that matter. I had no idea of what kind of dress I wanted when I walked into the store. Lucky for me, the sales lady was amazing and she sized me up in two seconds. She asked me what I liked and didn’t like and came back with three dresses. She handed me my dress and said, “I think this one is yours.” I never would have guessed that I would love a huge bejeweled back

Alterations: Approximately $150 to shorten the length and take in the bodice. How many dresses she tried on: About 10. I’m not a “try on 100 different dresses” type of person. I like to make a decision and go with it. Why she chose it: I wasn’t sure exactly what I was looking for in a dress, except that it needed to be lighter weight as our wedding would take place outside in August at King Family Vineyards. I tried on about eight dresses at David’s Bridal first, and they were all lovely, but none of them really felt like “the one.” The next day, I went to the Bridal Boutique and the second dress I tried on, I knew it was “the dress.” It had so many elements that I fell in love with—lace detailing on the bodice, tulle, buttons down the back, and unique flower details on the straps. It also fit the “modern vintage” theme I was going for at the wedding. Favorite detail about it: The asymetrical flower details on the strap. How it worked out: I felt so beautiful in that dress on my wedding day, and it was one of so many details that came together perfectly to create a wedding day that was more than I could ever have hoped for.

It was a nice compliment to the simple cut. How it worked out: Perfectly! Bella did a fabulous job of altering it for a flawless fit. It was easy to walk and dance in. One was more fitted with an organza one-shoulder top and all-lace bottom with a small train. It was a gorgeous fit, but a little formal for the venue. The dress I chose was full all the way around, which made it practical for the outside ceremony and dancing. The ruffle detail of the dress was very me and coordinated well with the Lula Kate bridesmaid dress we picked out. It was elegant yet playful,

Hilty Hazzard and Jeff St. Denis

“Have as much fun as possible.” That’s what Hilty said she and Jeff were going for when coming up with a concept for their wedding. “If we had to make a decision, we always went with whatever would make the party more fun,” she said. A graphic designer, Hilty is colorobsessed. After three months of trying to narrow it down to two or three, she realized she couldn’t settle. “I decided to just go for all of them!” She and Jeff mixed peacock blue dresses; hot pink, peach, and blue flowers; bright green chair cushions; blue water glasses; and multi-colored lanterns. Still, her favorite detail wasn’t really a detail at all: “A lot of the people who were there, Jeff and I don’t get to see but every couple of years,” she said. “It was really wonderful to be surrounded by so much love and friendship.”

Lauren Hill and Jonathan Dowler September 10, 2011

C-VILLE Unions • cvilleweddings.com

After six years together, Jonathan and Lauren didn’t want to get fussy about the details of their wedding. “We wanted it to be about the family we were starting and the history that had led us to this new beginning,” she said. So, they quickly checked off the dress (her mother’s), the setting (her grandmother’s farm in Somerset), and a few other big-day elements (contributed by family). Then, just as Lauren was getting hung up on a color scheme, a trusted friend convinced her to go for it and embrace all the colors she loves. “It was a balancing act for sure, but in the end, I got a rainbow.”

Embrace what you love A long-time admirer of all things Anthropologie, Tori wanted her and Nick’s wedding to feel like one of the retailer’s beautiful stores. “I wanted to create a mood that was elegant, but still relaxed,” she said. “I wanted the guests to feel as if they were eating in a garden.” Not only did she get her own wedding-day garb from BHLDN, Anthro’s bridal offshoot, but a lot of the décor came from the store as well, from the plates and bowls they filled with peaches, to the knobs the couple used as place card holders. Her favorite detail? The pergola that was built around the head table, which had chandeliers hanging from it. Oh, the romance!

Meredith McKown and Victor Colt Peyton

Barbeque, cowboy boots, mason jars, and old country tunes were the elements Meredith and Colt decided were must-haves. “We kind of put the cart before the horse,” she said, “in that we decided what we wanted first and then realized we had a bit of a Southern theme going.” They settled on their own house—a sprawling farm in Keswick—for the venue. It was originally Colt’s house, and Meredith felt having the ceremony there would carry more meaning than a vineyard or reception hall. “I felt it would be symbolic in the transition from ‘his’ to ‘ours’,” she said. “We also thought it would make the ceremony feel more personal and intimate.” “Personal” is exactly what they got. The wedding featured all three of Meredith’s kids—Owen, Griffin, and Wren—and a good friend, Peyton Tochterman, played guitar and sang for the couple. Still, Meredith said the best part of the wedding was her walk down the aisle. “The moment we saw each other...was more than I dreamed it would be. By far my favorite moment of our lives thus far.”

Embrace the outdoors

Karen Walker and Jeff Goldsmith October 3, 2010 There’s one simple reason Karen and Jeff wanted to host their wedding at their Albemarle County farm: “We love our home,” she said. “It is one of the more beautiful spots in the county.” Bonus: The couple loves to entertain. “Our home is tranquil and peaceful and we wanted our guests to feel that the day of our wedding.” The couple played off the “farm” feel, adding cowboy boots, hay bales, and stenciled wooden signs. “We went rustic,” she said. They even utilized the 1850s log cabin at the back of their property, taking pictures on the porch with the band. Sounds like history in the making.

Marry Making

Ashley: Luke and I had been talking more and more about getting married and had even designed a ring together, but I had no idea when or where he was going to ask me. Luke: I set to work designing a seed packet. I wrote my words on the back of the packet so that I could remember them, then started testing my idea—I placed the ring in the bottom of the packet and covered it in seeds, then poured it out onto my hand, the idea being that the ring fell out last and landed on top of the pile of wild flower seeds. It took many goes and many combinations of seeds to get it working perfectly.

Ashley: One day, he called me and told me to ‘get dressed up, grab the shovel, and be ready around 5.’ He picked me up, drove me out to [our] new house, and we took a walk around the property. He told me we were going to plant some seeds together. Luke: So I dug a hole in the ground and got Ashley to hold out her hands. I poured the packet out into her hands and there it sat on top of the little mound of seeds. I plucked the ring from the top and got down on one knee and did the thing I felt would happen from the first day I met her.
