Healthy bites. By Dr. Helle M. Stewart

Did you know that dogs and cats live longer and healthier lives when their teeth are healthy? Symptoms of gum disease in dogs and cats include yellow and brown build up of tartar along the gum line, inflamed gums and persistent bad breath. Broken teeth are a common problem in dogs and often seen after aggressive chewing on hard objects like rocks, cow hooves or hard nyla-bones. Resorptive lesions are the most common tooth disease in domestic cats. Studies show that about 28% of domestic cats develop at least one of these painful lesions during their life. Homecare can greatly improve your pet’s health and we can discuss individual recommendations when we see your pet. Annual wellness visits are a great time to discuss general preventive care and get the latest information about the newest products and foods for dental health. Red Eye in Pets Red, irritated eyes are common presenting complaints in emergency veterinary medicine. To help narrow down the cause of the redness, at Greenbrier Emergency Animal Hospital we typically ask pet owners a series of questions, since eye problems can occur for many different reasons. For instance: did your pet recently run through a field or play with a cat? Has your pet been around other pets? Is your pet having any other problems? Did this redness just start to appear, or has it been around and getting worse over time? Some causes are more obvious than others. Playing with a cat, playing rough with a dog or running through heavy brush normally indicates trauma (a scratch) and potentially an ulcer on the cornea, the clear covering of the eye. When the cornea is injured, it can cause a large amount of pain and lead to serious complications, and such an event might also result in having a foreign object lodged in the eye.

determine the cause of the irritation and prescribe medications to help your pet feel more comfortable and treat the problem. One important note: Do not allow your pet to scratch at his or her eyes if he/ she is suffering from red eye — scratching will only make it worse. You can use an e-collar, otherwise known as “the cone that goes around your pet’s head,” to deter them from scratching. And don’t wait to bring your pet in! Some eye problems can become very serious if left unattended. © 2011 Greenbrier Emergency Animal Hospital. All rights reserved. Printed here with permission from the author.

But there are other causes of eye redness as well. Infections (bacterial, viral and fungal); inflammation of the tissues around or in the eye; increased or decreased pressure of the eye (known as glaucoma, and uveitis, respectively); systemic diseases; autoimmune diseases; decreased tear production; allergies; problems with intraocular structures (such as the iris and the lens); and even cancer can also lead to red eye. So if your pet has red, irritated, teary eyes, or is squinting, give your primary care veterinarian or Greenbrier Emergency Animal Hospital a call as soon as possible. We can perform a variety of tests to

When adopting a new pet, consider adopting two at a time. Cats and dogs, as well as many exotic pets, are social animals and rely on companionship to keep them happy and healthy. By adopting siblings or kennel mates, you can ensure that your new family members will have a playmate and a companion, even when you are not home. Many adoption centers, such as the CASPCA, offer incentives for taking more than one animal at a time into your home. Adopting two pets at once requires not much more effort and upkeep

Smart tips: Adopting pairs of pets than a single animal, but the rewards for you and your new pets can be priceless. Contact your local adoption center for more information.

The Benefits of a Midday Dog Walk Ask any stay-at-home dog, and she will tell you that she misses her pack. We all know that dogs are pack animals, but what does that really mean? It means that given their druthers, they’d just as soon not be alone. They all could benefit from some socialization and relief during the middle of the day. I’m sure they’ve tried to tell you from time to time. Remember when you came home to a chewed up sofa? That was your dog’s reaction to wanting to be close to you, and knew right where your scent was the strongest. Sure, chewing it wasn’t the best way to get the message to you, but it did get your attention. Hopefully you didn’t get mad at him because by the time you saw it, he didn’t have a clue as to what you were so upset about. Actually he had a good time chewing on it, and it did make him feel closer to you. Then it was back to staring out the window waiting for your return. Having a friend come to visit for a midday walk and some TLC will help fray this loneliness, and get him in the mood for a long afternoon nap.

him to need to urinate more often. He knows it’s wrong to go potty in the house, but he just can’t help himself anymore. How embarrassing! Getting a midday break may be just the answer to his needs. Socializing, energy busting, boredom relief, potty break assistance, and the desire to keep our dogs happy and healthy are what it’s all about. Consider getting a midday break for your dog, either by coming home yourself, having a friend stop by, or hiring a reputable dog walking service. You and your pooch will be happy you did

How about that “surprise” she left for you by the front door that you stepped in when you got home? She tried to get out that door, but without opposable thumbs, she couldn’t get it open. What’s a dog to do? Most of us do not go for 8 to 10 hours without relieving ourselves, yet we expect this of our dogs. This is because they don’t speak “humanese” and can’t tell us otherwise. By having a trusted friend come by midday to get her outside to relieve herself, you not only are doing her body a favor, but you are taking the pressure off of yourself to get her out the door the minute you return. What are those little wet spots here and there around the house? Do we have a leaky roof? More than likely, it’s a leaky dog. As he gets older, his muscles get weaker all over, including his urethra muscles, and he just can’t hold it as long as he used to. There are also some medications that can cause

Almost Home Pet Adoption Center is a No-Kill shelter that is taking in most of the unclaimed and unwanted animals from Nelson County Animal Control Facility, thus preventing euthanasia of adoptable animals at the county's Animal Control Facility. In order to enable us to continue to save animals, we are in immediate need of: • funds to help us to continue to provide for the animals in our care • people to adopt from our large inventory of spayed/neutered cats and dogs • foster care providers • drivers to transport animals to no-kill shelters in New Jersey and Massachusetts • volunteers to take animals to adoption events Last May, eight dogs were seized by Nelson Animal Control and their owner charged with cruelty. After the court case, the dogs were transferred to Almost Home Pet Adoption Center and homes were found for one adult and three eight-month old puppies. Four shy dogs (not fear biters) are still at Almost Home and deserve a home where they will be patiently provided loving care. These dogs are pictured to the left.

Hi! I’m Sammie & I’m a one-year-old St. Bernard. I'm a loving, opinionated pup who’s not afraid to show it. That’s why you could imagine my reaction when my new family pulled up in the driveway with our New All Wheel Drive 2012 Subaru Outback. Boy I tell ya! When I saw that roomy interior, I stood panting at the window. I knew the days of leaving me behind were over! I’d be able to jump right in the back and go cruisin’ with the family. With 5 passenger seating, available rear-seat entertainment system and underfloor rear cargo-area storage, it’s heaven on wheels for a growing family like ours. Plus, most models come equipped with tri-zone climate control which allows my family to keep warm when I maybe want to cool down. (I get warm a lot, don’t judge me!)

*Optional features not available on all models. See dealer for details. All offers plus tax, tag, title &$288 processing fee.
