Compounding for Veterinarians & Animal Owners: your pets are special. Why not give them customized care? Why should you consider compounding as a solution for your pet’s medical problems? That can be answered with another question: how hard is it to get your cat to swallow a pill? Veterinary compounding – making medication a treat for your pet. The practice of pharmacy compounding is becoming a popular solution to veterinary problems. Compounding is the art and science of preparing customized medications for patients. Its resurgence in recent years extends valuable benefits to today’s pet owners. Animals often have variations of the same diseases humans can have, including skin rashes, eye and ear infections, heart conditions, cancer, and diabetes. Medicating pets presents unique problems that often are best dealt with through compounding. the compounding Solution As any pet owner is well aware, animals can be extremely difficult to treat with medications. Cats are notorious for refusing to swallow pills, and usually will eat right around one disguised in food. Dosages can be very tricky with dogs – a dose of medication that works for an 80-pound Golden Retriever may be far too much for a six-pound Yorkie to handle. Large and exotic pets pose many unique medication challenges. A compounding pharmacist is equipped to help them all!

SolVing doSage problemS Just like their owners, animals are individual and unique. They come in different shapes and sizes, and may be sensitive to ingredients like lactose. As a result, not all commercially available medicines are appropriate for every pet. That’s where compounding is especially helpful. In this situation, your veterinarian can prescribe a flavored liquid, treat, or other dosage form with the amount of medication that is exactly right for your pet’s size and condition. commercially unaVailable medicine Just like their owners, animals are individual From time to time, a manufacturer may discontinue a veterinary medication. Often this is because it is not needed in the vast quantities necessary to make mass production cost-effective, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still some pets that need it. When that medication has worked well for animals, a compounding pharmacist can prepare a prescription for the discontinued product – and tailor the strength, dosage form, and flavor to that pet’s specific needs.

flaVored medicine The pet who refuses to take medication because of the taste is a prime opportunity for compounding. Cats don’t like pills, but they do like tuna. Dogs don’t appreciate a traditional solution of medication being squirted into their mouth, but they’ll take it gladly when it’s flavored with meat or part of a tasty biscuit or treat. Birds cannot take large volumes of liquid medication, but they will accept a small dose of a tasty, fruit-flavored, concentrated solution.

By working closely with your veterinarian, a compounding pharmacist can prepare medicines in easy-to-give flavored dosage forms that animals happily devour, whether your pet is a cat, dog, bird, ferret, or snake.

PENNY GOLDMAN

who, along with being a great topic of conversation, also assist customers in their stores. Lauren Gerner, who operates Sustain, a boutique in the Main Street Market, often has her two dogs, Aries and Argus, fill in as customer service representatives. “Many (people) just come in to see the two of them. They say, ‘I’m sorry I am not here to shop, only to see the dogs,’ she admits. Not only do Aries and Argus help the clientele, they help the other employees, too. “They serve as my mental security, Gerner says. “They are so great to have with me all day. They are very cool, laid back, smart, intense, and attentive. All great qualities we should all be lucky to have. Eight miles west of Charlottesville is Ivy Corner, a small nursery and gift shop which is home to Homer, who has been the shop cat for six years. Homer escorts visitors through the paths of planters and trees. He also can often be found in the shade of the tables at the front of the parking lot displaying seasonal flowers and herbs. Many customers find his presence to be a fun and relaxing respite from the stresses of gardening season.

Parise and Madea take a break from counseling at the ASG. Parise, a Charlottesville native who works at the AIDS/HIV Services Group office, is considered one of the local branch’s most important employees. He’s friendly, reliable, and has a special knack for helping to calm people who are struggling with the disease. Parise is a confident counselor since he too is infected. He specifically finds comfort in tuna treats. Parise, of course, is a cat, and he’s not the only friendly animal who helps local businesses in their daily operations. In fact, there are many job opportunities in the Charlottesville region for dogs, cats, and birds. We recently spoke to several area businesses to see what positions are being filled by shop pets, and how they are doing.

Customer Service If you happen to visit Blue Ridge Cyclery, a new bike shop near Barracks Road Shopping Center, you will likely be greeted by Andy. He’s a large St. Bernard who excels at keeping the many customers in the store happy. He’s also skilled at keeping the floor warm, as, in the few minutes we visited with Andy, he managed to recline on the floor in three different spots. Andy’s just one of a many canine greeters in town. Multiple local shops have a resident dog

Security Gizmo is a Welsh Corgie who is a popular reason to stop by Blue Whale Books, a dealer of collectable books in the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville. Scott Fennessey, owner of Blue Whale, tells us, “(Gizmo) has a huge following on the Mall. People stop in to say ‘Hello’ to her every day. She has a “trap line for dog biscuits; we make the rounds to the Consignment House, Read It Again Sam, VNB, and Cappellino’s Cupcakes. She has been the shop dog since I got her as a puppy. While Gizmo is a sweet, low-maintenance pup, she is also known for a daring episode in her youth.

Beasts of Business “One very dark night, she chased three bear cubs up a tree in our front yard. She was about 6 months old and weighed 20 pounds. She may be terrified of plastic bags and umbrellas, but she’s one brave dog. Meanwhile, on a visit to Keswick Vineyards’ Tasting Room, patrons are apt to meet Mittens, a carefree cat who spends most days lounging on the front porch of the building. “She loves people and will gladly cuddle up with our guests on the seats outside, says Wine Club Manager, Kris Schornberg. “She’ll often get table scrapes from them too. Mittens is also something of a cheese snob. “ She loves cheese, but there are certain cheeses she just won’t eat. Schornberg revealed that, while Mittens is known at the shop as a “greeter, the cat also has been known to assist with being a bit of a vineyard night watch-cat, too. “She likes to leave presents (in the form of whatever she caught sneaking around the grounds at night) on the mat for the opening manager. Schornberg is quick to add, “Mittens [...] runs the grounds these days, keeping the dogs in line.

Admin. Assistant At the regional offices for Commonwealth Pizza, Inc., which owns and operates the Dominos Pizza locations in Central Virginia, two employees have found their home among the papers and desks. There have been a variety of cats from the neighborhood who quickly found that the office was a place to get reliable food and shelter. “One of them showed up for several days and finally, we put some food and water out and— boom—here comes two more, confesses Tom Hutton, the company’s vice president. The two cats, Tumble Weed (“TW) and Tom Cat (“TC), live and work at the office. Don’t worry, no pizza is made here; the building, near downtown Staunton, serves as the administrative hub for the restaurants. Tom tells us the story, “About three years ago when it got bitterly cold, I’d let them come in and stay for most the day. They had their spots

Back to Parise. The Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA recently launched a program called “Pawsitive Partnerships,” which allows people who have AIDS/HIV to adopt cats who are infected with FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) for free. FIV is a virus which cats can get either from birth (from their mother) or through

in their lives become calmed. They can see that even a cat who is living with a comparable disease is able to live a long, fulfilling, and happy life. Many professionals and researchers have found that pets have a very positive, therapeutic influence on the people they live (or work) with. This natural anti-depressant is at the heart of the CASPCA’s Pawsitive Partnership program. If you or someone you know is battling AIDS/HIV in their lives and could use a free feline friend, please contact either Penny Goldman at the ASG (penny.goldman@asgva.org) or stop by the CASPCA building any day between noon and 5 (including Sundays) to meet the loving FIV+ cats in residence there.

very aggressive cat fights that involve deep bites. The virus, which infects under 3 percent of all cats, is, otherwise, almost impossible to spread. “I think once people (learn about FIV), they’d be much more willing to adopt them,” says Penny Goldman, who Operations Manager at the Charlottesville-based AIDS/HIV Services Group (ASG). Through the Pawsitive Partnership program, Penny and her fellow office mates worked with the CASPCA to bring Parise and a shy, adorable female named Madea into the ASG offices as foster kitties. They quickly also became essential comrades for many of the people who seek advice and help from the ASG. Parise often attends meetings of the ARG Board of Directors and is given his own chair at the table. Penny explains, “I read an article some time ago about a woman who fostered FIV+ cats. She claimed that they made the most wonderful pets she’d ever had. It was almost something inherent to their illness; [...] it made them almost relish life, and that they had the most amazing dispositions. Based on our experience with Parise (and Madea), I couldn’t agree more. “ The cats, especially Parise, often sit with people during their counseling with ASG staff or volunteers. Just by having a feline to pet or sit on their laps, people who are struggling with AIDS/HIV

where they liked to sleep and when they both decided one day that the middle of my desk looked like a great spot, I had to move them around like paper weights to get my work done. Then, on the really cold nights, I would fix them up with everything they needed in our large storage room with a litter box and they would be happy just to be warm.” While the cats originally lived outdoors, after that particularly troublesome winter, they were moved inside permanently. Especially after one of them barely escaped a serious injury. Tom says that, one day, a neighbor had seen Tom Cat and he’d been bleeding from a wound on his head. “It appeared that he got hit by a car...I was able to take him to the vet where they stitched him up. If we hadn’t found him, I’m sure he would have died under there.” Even though the cats are technically strays, the folks at the Dominos office have dedicated great time, patience, and expense to making sure the felines are living healthy, happy lives. “There’s no question—I mean NO question— that they got plenty of food. They’re actually in great shape.”

Pet foods: make better choices for healthier dogs and cats! Tartar-covered teeth, yeast-filled ears, tear staining, itching, food allergies, and behavioral anxiety can be resolved with better pet foods. Here are some things to consider when making your selection:

BUY FRESH, BUY LOCAL... FOR PETS TOO! Virginia pets can now enjoy frozen meals that are made with local veggies and grass-fed meats. More costly, but less processing = a better pet food.

WHOLESOME INGREDIENTS Look for whole meats in the top five ingredients on the label. Also look for fresh vegetables and fruits – not kibbles dyed to look like they came from veggies and fruits!

GOOD NUTRITION = HEALTHIER PET Your choice depends on your budget, prep time, and the breed of your dog. There’s no right way – it’s what’s right for your pet! Your pet’s diet may change with age, seasons, climate, and physical challenges. Pets who eat a healthy diet will have cleaner teeth, less anxiety, fewer fleas, and be able to better suppress weight problems, hip/joint issues, allergies, digestive issues and even some illnesses like cancer. Your pet will let you know you made the right choice with a glossy coat, bright eyes, fresh breath, and good energy – the true picture of ultimate pet health! HQHUJ\ WKH WUXH SLFWXUH RI XOWLPDWH SHW KHDOWK

GOOD GRAINS, NOT SUGAR Choose barley, oatmeal, or millet – better nutrition and U.S. grown. Some poorer quality “natural foods contain lots of white/brown rice and beet pulp. Dogs love sugar but it is addictive and can cause health problems. Some grain-rich pet foods are costly and appear to be a premium brand, but they are “all marketing and contain very little nutritional value. NATURAL PRESERVATIVES, NO COLORS Pet foods made with vitamin C, E, A, or rosemary will last six months to a year and synthetic preservatives last up to two years. Dogs don’t care about food color so don’t buy products dyed to make it look appealing to the buyer.

Celebrating five years as a No Kill Community As the CharlottesvilleAlbemarle SPCA celebrates five years as a No Kill community, they are saying thank you to everyone for making this dream a reality. In early 2005, the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA committed to saving lives. Embracing a spirit of determination, the SPCA dedicated its efforts to finding solutions and devoted itself to making CharlottesvilleAlbemarle a No Kill Community. Within a year, the SPCA did just that. For the last five years, the SPCA has maintained Charlottesville-Albemarle as a No Kill community with an incredible 90% save rate—something only a handful of communities in the entire nation have achieved. This achievement, however, cannot be attributed solely to the actions of a few. Charlottesville-Albemarle is a No Kill community because of all those in the community who stepped in to lend a hand by: · Fostering more 10,000 animals in their homes · Adopting more than 20,000 new family members · Volunteering more than 100,000 hours over the last five years to help walk dogs, play with cats, and work adoption and fundraising events · Providing financial support to help feed and care for more than 23,000 animals, spay/ neuter more than 25,000, and providing lifesaving medical care for more than 12,000 animals

Maxine, the kitten, is also thankful for the way an entire community of animals and people came to her rescue. A Charlottesville woman and her dog discovered Maxine on their daily walk and rushed the tiny, cold kitten to the SPCA. SPCA veterinary staff immediately treated Maxine, for hypothermia and dehydration and began bottle-feeding her. Worried Maxine may not make it through the night, a concerned staff member took her home. Photo by tom Daly The next day a mother cat, nursing two kittens of her own, arrived at the SPCA. This sweet mother cat accepted Maxine and became her surrogate mother. A long-term foster family took in the mother cat and her now three kittens to provide the extra love and care needed for them to grow strong. In full circle, with Maxine recovered and healthy, the woman who initially found her adopted Maxine giving her a loving forever home. Annabel, Lee, and Maxine exemplify the faces of so many animals that are saved by the SPCA’s No Kill mission along with an incredibly caring and loving community.

Dogs like Annabel and Lee certainly celebrate living in this community – a community where they were given a chance at a new life. A caring citizen found Annabel and Lee wandering in the road and brought them to the SPCA. Annabel and

Lee arrived emaciated and suffering from a severe, contagious but treatable mange, a condition against which dogs in many communities might not have a chance. But at the SPCA, veterinary staff treated Annabel and Lee giving them the medications needed to begin their long recovery. After a few months of care, Annabel is now recuperating with a foster family, and Lee has healed and found a new home.

Sweet Parsley arrived at Caring For Creatures on December 7th, 1995. He was one of a litter of several Beagle mixes born to his mother, Blossom, right here at the sanctuary. Parsley was a “shy guy,” much like his mother. Due to his shyness, Caring For Creatures remained his safe haven after his siblings went to their own forever homes. But do not feel badly for the little guy - to those lucky people who made a point to spend as much time as possible with Parsley, he was one in a million. He had a heart of gold, and strength of spirit to match! Parsley proved his strength when he suffered rear paralysis at the young age of five. Soon after, Parsley began his very own chiropractic treatments. He got multiple adjustments, and even acupuncture! Partial paralysis could not keep the little guy down! Parsley lived a long, special life here at Caring For Creatures. He spent his days lounging and playing with his loyal penmate, Rusty. Old age finally laid claim to the long life of this strongwilled survivor on 1/28/11. He passed away at the age of 16 years old. His friend, Rusty, was not far behind. He wanted nothing more than to be with his buddy on the other side. Caring For Creatures suffered major snow damage in the winter of 2009. The weight of the snow caused the roof of one of the sanctuary’s outside buildings to collapse, displacing multiple dogs. Thanks to the kind people in the community, Caring For Creatures just celebrated the one year anniversary of its new structure – lovingly called “Parsley’s Place.” Caring For Creatures is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit foundation established in 1987 as the first “no kill” sanctuary caring for homeless dogs and cats in Central Virginia. Its gates have been open to the public, as well as multitudes of homeless dogs and cats, since 1988. CFC has a unique mission – to provide for the well-being of animals at risk and to encourage a sense of responsibility in the

Although the ultimate goal of the sanctuary is to place its residents into loving homes, if an animal is not selected for adoption, we offer high-quality care and companionship for that animal as long as needed. In addition to caring for animals, Caring For Creatures maintains a strong Community Outreach Program that is fundamental to carrying out CFC’s overall goals. CFC believes that behind every unwanted litter, and any neglected, abused, or abandoned animal, there is a human who made an uneducated or misguided choice. CFC does its best to provide information and training tips, referrals, and in general, helps walk individuals through the steps they can take to problem solve. Equally important, CFC staff offer a patient and compassionate ear to callers in need of assistance. CFC is located in Fluvanna County on 157 acres of gently rolling fields and woodlands. It now houses some 200 residents at a given time, costing the facility around $1,000/day to provide top notch care to each and every resident. As Caring For Creatures receives no state funding, the facility can afford to keep its gates open thanks to the generous contributions and dedication of those caring individuals in our community. Please remember that the happy endings we create are made possible by your support.

Each animal in trouble matters – every one counts. Caring For Creatures is helping, one animal, one person at a time. (434) 842-2404 • www.caringforcreatures.org

Allergies and your pet Nicola Williamson, DVM, DACVD Veterinary Dermatology of Richmond FLEA ALLERGY The most common allergy in dogs and cats. ATOPY – ENVIRONMENTAL / INHALANT ALLERGIES Pets can have allergies to anything which we can be allergic to (dust mites, tree pollens, grass pollens, weed allergies, molds, pets, humans etc..) FOOD ALLERGY The most common food allergies in dogs are to chicken, beef, corn, wheat, dairy and eggs. Cats are prone to having allergies to seafood as well as chicken, beef, corn, wheat, dairy and eggs. COMMON SIGNS OF ALLERGIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING: Recurrent skin infections (bacteria and/or yeast), Scratching, Licking, Chewing, Red bumps, Red skin, Red feet, Red ears, Ear infections, Hair loss, Scale (flaking), Darkening of the skin (hyperpigmentation), Thickened (“elephant”) skin, Odor, Scooting, Sneezing, Over grooming, to name a few. Food allergic pets can have the above symptoms as well as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, increased intestinal sounds, increased number of bowel movements, excessive belching or flatulence.

NINE THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT YOUR PET, ALLERGIES AND SKIN DISEASE 1. Weekly bathing of pets with Atopy – environmental / inhalant allergies is very helpful because pollens, mold spores, dust mites etc… are removed from the skin and coat which reduces your pets allergen exposure and hopefully allergy symptoms. Pets with recurrent ear infections may benefit from routine ear cleaning with a product recommended by your pet’s veterinarian.

3. Tick control is vital in Virginia. Tick borne diseases can affect both you and your pet. Ask your veterinarian which product is best for your pet and if your pet should be vaccinated for Lyme disease.

5. Dogs and cats do not get poison ivy. 6. There are several over the counter antihistamines that can be helpful in reducing itching, licking, scratching, etc.… in your pet. Ask your veterinarian for advice about antihistamines – which ones to try and what strength and frequency they should be administered to your pet. Consulting a veterinarian is important especially if you pet is on medications for other diseases or has other health concerns. 7. Not all ear infections are caused by ear mites. Allergies secondary to Atopy – environmental / inhalant allergies and food allergies can look like ear mite infections. It is very rare for an adult dog or cat to get ear mites unless it has had contact with a puppy or kitten with ear mites. The only way to determine what type of ear infection your pet has is to have your veterinarian take a sample of the ear debris and look at it under a microscope. If your pet has 2-3 or more ear infections in a year your pet may have allergies. 8. Food allergy reactions can occur immediately. Many food allergic patients show symptoms of scratching, chewing, licking, scooting, facial swelling etc.. several days after they ingest the “forbidden” food. Reactions can take as many as 12 days to occur. 9. Pets with white ears and/or noses have an increased risk of developing skin cancer from sun exposure. Pets that sun bathe, have a thin hair coat or have areas of hair loss are also at an increased risk for solar dermatitis and skin cancer. Ask your veterinarian about sun protection products for your pet. Steroids are not the only option for managing your pet’s allergies

2. Flea control is essential in Virginia. For effective flea control, pets and their environments need to be treated. Ask your veterinarian which product is best for your pet. Remember that there are numerous products that are safe in dogs but can be life threatening in cats. If the label does not say specifically safe for use in cats – don’t use it on cats.

4. Insect bite reactions (bee stings) that cause swelling of the head or neck need immediate veterinary attention.

Grape toxicity in pets

Grapes may be one of people’s favorite fruit-based snacks, but they are not a safe snack for our pets. Grapes can cause acute kidney failure in dogs and possibly in cats. The exact agent in grapes that causes the toxicity is still unknown. One notable exception is grape seed extract, which is found in some pet products and is not currently thought to be a pet hazard. A very small amount of grape ingestion can be toxic for pets. People have said, “Well, he only ate two or three grapes,” or “Well, he got into some trail mix with raisins, but there weren’t many in it.” Unfortunately, any known grape ingestion — regardless of the amount — could potentially cause a problem.

ingestion, they can start experiencing more serious problems, such as showing a decrease in the amount of urine they produce — or not producing urine at all. These are some of the signs of acute kidney failure. Early treatment is the key. If you suspect your pet has eaten grapes, raisins, or products containing them, bring your pet to Greenbrier Emergency Animal Hospital or to your regular vet as quickly as possible. The prognosis of any given case usually corresponds with how soon you realize that your pet has eaten the grapes — and how fast you react to get them the proper treatment.

People also say, “I have been giving my pet grapes for years without a problem.” Regardless of what you may have given your pet in the past, the consequences of grape toxicity can be severe, so why take the risk? Like many other products that are toxic to animals, your pet may appear normal for up to 24 hours after they eat grapes or a grape product. Within 24 hours or so, you might start seeing them not wanting to eat, vomiting, acting like their abdomen is in pain or experiencing diarrhea. Within 48 hours after
