Students must have all teachers sign off on their final grade, and all fines must be paid before any counselor will clear them for graduation. Graduation rehearsal will take place on Tuesday, June 21, at 8 a.m. at Memorial Stadium. No buses will be provided so seniors must have their own transportation. The graduation ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. and seniors are responsible for getting themselves to the stadium by 3:30 p.m.

Seniors should be in their caps and gowns as they enter the stadium. A class photo will be taken at 4:45 p.m. on the stadium bleachers before seniors line up for commencement.

Police get a break in Robinson murder case

BY RONNIE ESTOQUE Staff reporter

There has been a break in the unsolved drive by shooting death of 17-year-old Robert Robinson, Jr. On March 15, 2015, the Cleveland community was shocked by Robinson’s murder on Beacon Hill. He was shot once in the chest as he was walking north on 15th Avenue South near South Forest Street. Robinson later died at Harborview Medical Center.

Witnesses said the shooter fled the scene in a blue Honda. Unfortunately, his case never gained traction, and for over a year the case did not produce answers regarding Robinson’s death.

This past February, a Seattle police

homicide detective received a phone call from a former Seattle man now living on the East Coast who admitted his involvement in the shooting. The Robert Robinson 23-year-old caller was killed in a told the detective drive-by shooting that the death of last year.

Robinson was “eating him alive,” and that there was also a second suspect involved who was killed in an unrelated shooting in West Seattle last October.

After taking the caller’s statement by phone, detectives flew to New York

to conduct an in-person interview.

A search warrant was filed in February by homicide detective Frank Clark, but was not filed in King County Superior Court until late April. With the warrant, detectives will be able to gain phone records to the two possible suspects and confirm whether or not they were responsible for the killing of Robinson.

Detective Clark, however, stated that the call “has provided information consistent with this crime that was not available to the general public,” including the caliber type of firearm used in the shooting. They also linked a blue 1993 Honda Civic to the brother of the deceased suspect.

According to the affidavit, which

was taken from a phone interview with the suspect, the two men drove to the Beacon Hill area to look for Robinson “so they could shoot him” after the men perceived Robinson had “poisoned” them two days prior to the shooting.

The caller said that after shooting Robinson, the men drove to Alki Beach and “threw the gun in the water.”

Other than a vehicle description, the Seattle Police Department did not have much to go on for the case, and this may be the breakthrough needed to bring justice for Robinson’s death.

Robinson was passionate for social justice and an avid poet. His passion for writing and music led him to pen multiple songs, many of which he would post to his Facebook page.

Annual fundraiser hauls in over $45,000

BY LUCAS RUMPELTES Staff reporter Despite an overhaul of the school’s auction committee, Cleveland’s PTSA-hosted event went off without a hitch. The Red and White Auction is the school’s biggest fundraiser and is used to raise money for programs around CHS. “I think the auction went really well. We had good attendance, great items, the environment was good ... ” said auction committee head Suzette Carter.

This was Carter’s first year as the leader after many of the former committee members were no longer involved or stepped back from responsibility. Regardless, the change in leadership was seamless as Carter helped facilitate the fundraising for various programs around the school.

The event started with a silent auction in which attendees were able to browse items while Cleveland’s orchestra played songs that matched the night’s theme, “Golden Eagle,” a spin on the James Bond movie “Golden Eye.” The silent auction was followed by dinner, then a live auction. The live auction, directed by Cleveland alum Harold Taniguchi, was a success as some of the best items, including

The auction also shined a spotlight on some award winners. The Community Member Award was bestowed upon Jim Fernandez for his work in the math department. Also recognized were the 2015-16 Spirit Unity Progress honorees. The night was punctuated with various games, which included a dessert dash and wine grab. Proceeds from the dessert dash were donated to Kari Childs,

the mother of Jade Bowen, a Cleveland student who died in March.

Overall, the auction raised more than $45,000 to support programs around the school. A large portion went to the Cleveland After School Help (CASH) program, as well as athletics, extracurricular activities and to buy classroom materials.

Teachers who wish to request a portion of the money raised must fill out a form that can be found in the main office. The next PTSA meeting is June 13.

The 2016-17 school year calendar was approved by the Seattle Public Schools School Board on May 4. The calendar includes a weeklong mid-winter break and another late ending for the school year. While this is not a bargaining year for teachers, principals are in negotiations for new contracts. However, there is no threat of a strike to delay the start of school.

Cleveland has it’s own calendar of events and the Journal has compiled a list of important dates for the upcoming school year.

There was no shortage of good ideas for fundraisers by ASB; the number of events they put on doubled this year. “Seattle’s Got Talent” stood out as the best. The Class of 2018 managed to pull off the first-ever citywide talent show, which included performances by students from different schools and a crowd so big the balcony had to be

beautifully done and jam-packed with students. From the black lights to the smoke machine, the setting felt like a real high school dance. At the Winter Formal, the mood was set with vintage lights and rustic décor. The entire look of the dance made the night fit the theme: enchanted.

opened to accommodate the crowd. While the meticulous planning helped ASB pull off a flawless talent show, other fundraisers didn’t fare so well when it came to execution.

Both Mr. Cleveland and Open Mic had a low turnout and other events like the Teacher Talent Show and Spring Formal were canceled due to lack of interest.

For most students, it can be hard to reach an ASB member if you don’t personally know them. With no specific way to contact them, it can seem like a long shot to get ideas or concerns heard. Most Eagles know about Cleveland Publications’ Facebook page and Twitter feed. Whether you read the newspaper or follow online, students rely on it to get important information. Although CPub reports on the school, it should not be expected to promote every event and fundraiser, which is what tends to happen with ASB. Interaction between officers and peers needs to be increased, which brings forth the idea of ASB having their own Facebook and Twitter accounts. This way, students would have a direct means of contacting ASB and ASB would be able to hear more voices.

ASB does have a Remind account, but less than a third of students are signed up.

Holding assemblies and pep rallies can be a lot of work. They must be organized so well that everything goes according to plan in a short amount of time. ASB had trouble with that. Although the concepts were good, the execution often seemed messy and hard to follow. And who can forget the whole “Go Eages!” sign debacle?

It happens to most of us: we walk past the main office and see posters hanging on the wal l advertising spirit week. How long has that been there? Is it this week or next? Has it already happened? In order to increas e the number of participants, ASB needs more than a poster hun g by the main office. And it’s not just the advertising that needs work. ASB needs to get creative when it comes to picking themes for each day. No more Disney Day!

New ASB, class officers elected

BY IAN BLACKBURN Staff reporter This year’s ASB elections could best be described as controversial. The announcement of the results was delayed due to several students allegedly casting more than one vote in one of the elections. Students were forced to recast their votes online.

“Next year, we plan to do everything online,” said ASB adviser Bryan Gordon, referring to the voting.

It wasn’t just the voting process that was problematic. More than half of the contestants ran unopposed for their positions.

“It’s hard to say why ... It could be a lack of information,” Gordon said. “We had spring break right before the elections so lots of students were unaware that they were coming up.”

In past elections, students who were interested in running simply signed up on sheet

outside the main office. They could see who were running against. Gordon believes students would sign up “just to run against a certain person.”

Newly elected ASB president Cornelius Cambronero beat out Jannah Bongato for the top spot. He already has a vision for what he wants to do next school year.

“I want seniors to be supportive of students in lower grades so we can build a strong community,” he said.

What that looks like to Cambronero is seniors building relationships with underclassmen and helping them out on a daily basis.

He believes by doing this, underclassmen will develop their own leadership skills and spirit to run the school.

“I plan to do this by providing the school with as many fundraisers as possible and have activities where we can all get together,” said Cambronero.

Are AP exams worth their weight?

BY AMANDA NGUYEN Staff reporter The struggle students face as they scramble to spice up their transcripts has never been so real. A schedule bulked up with Advance Placement classes helps students stand out amongst other college or scholarship applicants. However, while many high-achieving students are quick to sign up for AP classes, signing up for the test is a whole other story.

Among AP students at Cleveland, there is a divide between students who take the AP test and those who take the class without any plans to take the grueling exam in May. Teachers are looking for ways to change this.

Most AP teachers would agree that students should

take the final exam and urge them to do so. AP Biology Megan Claus is no exception, requiring all of her students to take the exam in the spring.

“It provides a setting in a testing scenario that is so different than what we can establish in a high school classroom,” Claus said. “It gives student a glimpse into what things might look like after they leave Cleveland, which is really important in the rigor of what a test setup for the College Board would look like.”

While the AP test can be expensive for students, Claus believes that the benefits outweigh the cost.

“If you pass the test, you suddenly get the [college] credit for a lot cheaper,” she said.

Claus works one-on-one with students who struggle to pay

the fees so that they can bypass the monetary burden and take the test.

While students who feel unprepared may think that the money isn’t worth a failing score, Claus believes that the chance – and the experience – is worth it.

“Sending a test score to a college where you didn’t pass isn’t not going to get you admitted or not get you in the college.

There’s nothing to lose by taking the test, only things to gain.”

AP Computer Science teacher Peter Henry reported that only about 10 percent of his students took the AP test this year. He believes that the highstress factor associated with studying for AP exams deters even students who are well prepared.

BY RONNIE ESTOQUE Staff reporter Last year, Cleveland saw a high rate of teacher turnover due to the humanities department redesigning their requirements to be able to teach the subject. But this year, staff members are leaving for a variety of reasons. Senior humanities teacher Jeffrey Eisenbrey, biology teacher Greg Kowalke, geometry teacher Bronwyn Starostka, and Spanish teacher Javier Roman will not return to Cleveland in the fall.

Kowalke is finishing up his second year at Cleveland and is the one teacher being displaced due to budget cuts. Since Kowalke is the newest hire, he was first on the chopping block. His leaving means the science department will have to cut back on elective classes.

“As for Cleveland, I am upset with one less teacher,” Kowalke said. “It makes it difficult to offer all the science classes that we want to have as a STEM school.”

The science department is at risk for losing electives such as oceanography and environmental science.

Though he will be leaving, he has enjoyed his time teaching at Cleveland.

“It’s exactly what I want from a high school,” Kowalke said Finishing up her fourth year at Cleveland, Staroska chose to leave due to the later start times for Seattle high schools next year.

“With Seattle Public Schools pushing the start time an hour next year, it’s going to be put-

ting me on the road for far longer than I can afford,” Staroska said.

Staroska will be teaching at Eastside Catholic next year, which is a closer commute from her Kenmore neighborhood. She has loved her time at Cleveland.

“I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” Staroska said. “I love, most importantly, the kids.”

In his first year of being a Spanish teacher at CHS, Roman has openly expressed his appreciation for the community.

“The students are tremendous,” he said.

Currently, Roman’s position is up in the air and is dependent on the scheduling and administrative decisions from SPS. He has over 15 years of teaching experience, which includes time being a chaplain in the military.

There is a shortage of world language teachers across the district, so Roman’s departure could be difficult to fill.

Eisenbrey has been teaching for 23 years and is finishing his third year at CHS. He has expressed his frustration at the writing ability of his senior students, but admits they have improved since the beginning of the year. His morning class, which contains 35 students, has been overwhelming for him.

“Overall, they’ve come a really long way, but it hasn’t been fun,” Eisenbrey said.

He plans on leaving teaching and is hoping to run for the council member position in his neighborhood in Shoreline. He is also seeking to invest more time writing books and poetry.

that I felt were not prepared,” Henry said, “but then there were a few people in there that I thought were prepared and could’ve done well, but they didn’t [take the test]. But they would’ve had to study. A lot of work would’ve been involved to study for it. If people had other things they needed to spend their time on, then I could understand that. It’s a question of priorities.”

To help student prepare for the exam, Henry held AP Computer Science Prep classes on Saturdays.

“I thought it was most useful to get people familiar with the format because it is very imposing,” Henry said. “From the typeface of the questions to the dense print, you have to read each question about three times before you can understand what they’re asking you to do. By having practice sessions, you could lower the fear

factor and realize, ‘Well, you know what? I actually know this stuff! It’s just how it is presented that is difficult.’”

This year, only 43 percent of AP Statistics students took the AP test. AP Stats teacher Nicola Wethall is one of the teachers who gives students the option to take an alternative, in-class final if they choose not to take the AP test. However, she sees this changing in the future.

Wethall is leaning towards requiring the AP test, especially because there are now other routes students who can’t afford the test fees can take.

“I want to have a larger discussion with other AP teachers and other math teachers about requiring students to take the AP test,” Wethall said. “I think some students are missing the opportunity to experience taking the test, the opportunity to obtain the credit due to a fear of failure.”

Recovery Road series Unexpected changes are normal in a high school student’s life, but for two Cleveland seniors, their lives were interrupted by medical conditions that wreaked havoc on their young bodies. One was left paralyzed in a car accident; the other was diagnosed with leukemia.

On May 28, 2015, Phong Ton along with seven of his classmates, were involved in a severe car crash.

Ton spent 11 days in the Intensive Care Unit after undergoing surgery for a collapsed lung and a fracture in his C6 vertebrae. The

injury left him paralyzed. He also has limited use of his hands and can feel sensation below his chest, but has no mobility in his legs.

Senior Jade Bowen’s everyday life took an abrupt turn when she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in June 2015.

She endured countless treatments and surgeries, which left her unable to attend school. Although she beat cancer after undergoing a stem cell transplant, Bowen died March 12, from a blood clot that formed in her liver, which led to organ failure.

Boys athletics bring respct to the nest Stepping out of the shadows of their female counterparts, it was boys’ athletics that shined this year. Multiple male teams saw post-season action, the biggest surprise being the boys’ basketball team. The team had a long losing record for some time, but this year the boys and their coaches were determined to turn it around. Cleveland showed the Metro League they were in it to win it, making it to the State Tournament for the first time since 2004. The Eagles finished 6th in the state.

Football also had an outstanding year, finishing 6-3 in the regular season and qualifying for the playoffs. The Eagles lost to Sumner, 41-8, in the first round.

Boys’ Ultimate Frisbee saw tremendous growth. After going on a six-game winning streak, the team lost to their Metro League rivals, Franklin in one of the biggest matches of the season. But they quickly brought it back, beating last year state champs, Nathan Hale. With many of their varsity players coming back next year, the team is destined to go even further.

After not qualifying last year, the boys 4x100 relay team advanced to State. The track team also sent more runners to Metros than ever before. Newcomer Zack Brown, along with Tyson Billingsley, Rashad Hebert and Reality Jordan kept the relay team on top. Sprinter Jordan Wallace also had a strong season.

More than 250 spectators packed into the school’s auditorium to witness Cleveland’s first city-wide talent show. The audience caught a glimpse from other talented acts from Franklin, Mount Rainier and Lindbergh. After weeks of preparation, the Class of 2018 made over $700, making it the most successful event at Cleveland.

Strike delays start of school On Sept 9, what was initially supposed to be the first day of school took a different route for Seattle Public School students. The Seattle Education Association, a union that negotiates contracts for teachers, paraprofessionals and office professionals opted to strike instead of returning to class.

ity for the first six days of school with nearly every teacher present until the bargaining teams for both sides came to an agreement.

Seniors do it like it’s for TV at prom

Final dance sets the scene in Hollywood glamour

BY TRAN LAM AND IAN BLACKBURN Staff reporters Red was the color of the night for the Class of 2016 as the group gathered to celebrate one of their last rites of passage in high school: prom. “A Night in the Spotlight” was the theme of this year’s prom held on May 27, at Within Sodo.

Girls came decked out in various shades of the school color, most opting for long gowns. White was another popular color.

Not to be outdone, the men came dressed to impress as well. Most went for the traditional tux while a few daring fellas showed some ankle in cropped pants, a trend made popular by professional sports players this season.

Most couples coordinated colors to match each other, and following tradition, ladies wore corsages and the men wore boutonnieres.

A red carpet lined the entrance with silver, gold and white balloons surrounding the room. A buffet table filled with cookies, candy and light sandwiches allowed partygoers to refuel throughout the night, and an unlimited photo booth kept everyone entertained as students lined up to pose using various props to take pictures with their friends.

These Elite Eagles are the ones to watch From staff reports For Netflix binge watchers, there is nothing worse than the dreaded screen asking if you want keep watching or find something new to watch. “Are you still watching?” is the equivalent of asking, “Don’t you have anything better to do?” “Continue watching” looms big on the screen and often indicates

you’ve been sitting in the same spot for a long period of time. Netflix, along with other distractions, kept students from finishing homework, chores and hanging with friends.

Not this time.

Cleveland’s version of the are-youwatching screen comes in the form of graduation for the senior class. It’s the last episode for the Class of 2016

and the question is will people keep watching? Will this year’s seniors produce back-to-back seasons of success?

Will they leave us with a dramatic cliffhanger? Will there be a spinoff?

For the seniors, this year will go down as the year of tragedy and triumph. From the death of a classmate to the boys’ basketball team making it to the state tournament, the year

produced enough material to make 10 different TV shows.

These Elite Eagles are stars in their own rights. They are future engineers, doctors and scientists. Each one of them is on their way to a bright future. We who are left behind can do nothing but tune in and wait to see what happens.Are we still watching?

BY TRAN LAM Staff reporter One thousand students across the country were the recipients of this year’s Gates Millennium Scholarship, and two of them are from Cleveland. Seniors Amanda Nguyen and Kevin Nguyen, who are not related, were awarded the full-ride scholarship to the school of their choice.

The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program was funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Their mission is to provide outstanding students of color with an opportunity to

complete an undergraduate college education in any discipline area of interest.

“What motivated me to go for this scholarship was how well it fit me,” said Kevin. “The Gates Millennium targets high achieving minority students, and I think I fit the bill pretty well.”

Both of the scholarship winners will be attending the University of Washington this fall.

Amanda Nguyen’s intended major is bioengineering and Kevin Nguyen earned direct admission to the industrial engineering department. The two chose UW simply because it is closer to home.

Seniors celebrate accomplishments at breakfast ceremony

BY ABBYGAIL ELECCION AND ZAREYA FLOWERS Staff reporters For the last wasSUP Wednesday of the year, the Class of 2016 packed into the cafeteria dressed in their best business casual attire for the annual Senior Breakfast and Awards Ceremony. The event not only celebrates the academic accomplishments of the senior class, it also shines a light on those who have served the Cleveland community and improved their grades throughout the year.

Harim Sanchez earned the highest prize, the Principal’s Eagle Award of Merit, for overcoming adversity and leading the robotics team in competition. Medals were given to honor graduates who have a grade point average of 4.0 and above. In total, nearly 60 awards were handed out.

After the ceremony, seniors were able to sign yearbooks and leave their handprints on a class banner. There were also stations

for decorating graduation caps and crowns for the Moving Up assembly.

Across the campus, the underclassmen were indulging in Field Day activities like kickball, basketball and making t-shirts with the King of Tie-Dye, computer science teacher Peter Henry. Others watched movies, played video games or sang karaoke.

The fun didn’t stop after Field Day. All of Cleveland came together in the gym for the Moving Up assembly. The drumline played as the Class of 2016 came through the doors. A representative from the alumni association gave away seven scholarships to members of the senior class.

After the new ASB officers were introduced, the class officers went head-to-head in a game of relay tic-tac-toe. It all came down to the biggest match of them all: the Class of 2016 vs. the Class of 2017. After a heated battle, the upcoming seniors took the crown. The assembly ended with students moving to their new spaces in the gym.

Dorm life in college is nothing like what seniors at Cleveland have been exposed to up to this point. They are suddenly faced with a number of questions, the foremost being: What about roommates?

“I do not want a roommate,” said senior Kevin Nguyen. Nguyen was one of two seniors this year to win the Gates Millennium Scholarship, so he has the ability to choose whether he wants a living companion or a single room when he heads to the University of Washington this fall.

“I’m trying to go for a studio, and it’d just be really nice to have all this room to yourself so you have all the freedom to do what you want,” Nguyen said.

Most students don’t have the luxury of choosing whether they want a roommate so they are forced into deciding who their roommate might be and what type of housing they want.

First year teacher Sonya Urs shared a living space all through college, so she has had considerable experience with choosing housing and roommates. When asked about criteria she looked for in a roommate, Urs was looking for stability.

“Did they have a constant source of income so they could pay their rent? Did they have student loans? Were their parents paying their rent? I had to know that before signing a lease,” said Urs.

“I looked for people who did the same things socially as I did, so if you partied really hard every day of the week, then we weren’t going to live together because that would be too much for me.”

Nguyen echoed similar sentiments about the issue, admitting that he wanted to have a close bond with his roommate if he were to live with someone.

“I don’t think it’d be a good experience if you have a roommate that you’re just acquaintances with,” Nguyen said. “I think your roommate should be someone that’s really close to you.”

Finding that person can be extremely hard, so universities use in-depth quizzes to attempt to put you with your best match. Quizzes consist of questions that ask about how clean you are, your sleeping habits, and about some hobbies that might be polarizing to others.

Because of his desire to live with someone he can connect with, Nguyen is fairly sure he doesn’t want a roommate at all.

Urs, after going through the entire process many times over, admitted that there are pros and cons on both sides.

“If you’re looking to go to school and meet people, develop social connections, and have the college roommate experience, then having a roommate is definitely worth it,” she said. “But I know some people just don’t gel well with others. You have to really think about what would serve you best academically and socially.”

Seniors celebrate next big step at College Signing Day

BY DAKARIA HERU Staff reporter More than 50 seniors turned out for Cleveland’s first ever College Signing Day on May 4, as part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “The Reach Initiative.” More than 1,000 Signing Day celebrations took place around the country. No longer just for athletes, Signing Day celebrated seniors who have post-secondary plans.

To Dawn Cunanan, the event’s organizer, the day was a big deal for her. Ever since she started working at Cleveland she’d wanted to host a

signing day. To her, the planning was key.

“We want student to give us where they are going so we could get an idea of schools to invite and get some swag,” said Cunanan. “But the hardest part of planning was getting seniors to come.”

The event was held after school, making it difficult for seniors who have jobs or other commitments. Others said they had not picked a school.

Senior Alyssa Cabebe is still not sure she wants to go to Seattle Central or Bellevue College.

“At least we know where

people are going and which we path they are taking,” Cabebe said. “It just makes leaving more real.”

Cunanan thought Cleveland’s Signing Day was successful and wasn’t disappointed with the turnout. Some students brought family members to join in the celebration.

The majority of Cleveland seniors are staying in the state, whether they are going to a four-year university, community college or vocational school. What do Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman all have in common?

Of course they are all superheroes, but someone had to make them.

This is the time of year where people honor those who have had a hand in raising them. They are the real superheroes – without the capes.

As seniors prepare to leave the nest, parents are doing everything in their power to prepare their children to fly on their own. Whether it’s learning how to do laundry or balancing a budget, it’s mom and dad who are teaching you lifelong lessons. While parental guidance can sometimes be annoying, their influence is irreplaceable.

“My parents have shown me [love] by being firm and not spoiling me, but still showing unconditional love creates a great individual,” said senior Jack Thai. “I plan to do the same for my children, with hopes I can be as successful raising them like my parents were with me.”

One of the many powers guardians have to offer includes super support.

Junior Ciera Devers, who has two other siblings, which are all active in sports, talked about how her parents never miss games or events.

“I’m not sure how they do it, but I know no matter what, I can always

With three kids to support, Devers’ parents may also have the power to teleport themselves.

Not only are kids the fuel that keeps these heroes going, but parents also light that spark in their kids. “They motivate me to do better because they came to this country to provide a better life,” said junior Sophyah Dam. “I

plan to become a first generation kid to attend college.”

Every superhero must have a weakness. When it comes to parenting, sometimes children may be the kryptonite. Parents pride themselves on their children and will do anything necessary to assure they have what they need so kids should be grateful for all the sacrifices they make. But when you’re a teenager, it’s easy to forget.

Freshmen Damonet Douces admits that at times, she takes her parents for granted.

“I don’t know what it’s like not to have them, so I guess I have become so used to their presence that I don’t realize the huge role they play in my life.”

How is it possible to show appreciation to someone who saves your life on a daily basis? Many parents just want to see their kids happy and healthy, doing positive things.

Junior Thomas Le said his parents are his heroes. He plans to repay them for all the things they have done for him. “I plan to take care of them when I get older like they took care of me.”

With Mother’s Day behind us and Father’s Day on the horizon, students have the opportunity to reflect on those who’ve had a hand in shaping them.

Whether it’s a sister, aunt, friend, teacher or neighbor, these guardians keep our galaxies safe.

Sports Athletics getting a makeover with new coaches

BY ZAREYA FLOWERS AND MYLA HIGHTOWER Staff reporters Cleveland is known for its diverse student body, its emphasis on technology and its STEM program, but something not as well known is the carousel of coaches in the athletics department.

A lack of commitment and conflict with players seemed to be a recurring theme among CHS coaches in recent years. This year is no exception.

As of May, there are at least seven departures. Both soccer coaches – Mark McAlexander (boys) and Gary Hunter (girls) – are leaving, as well as head football coach Jeff Schmidt, baseball head coach Allann Gold, girls basketball assistant coaches Trent Spelman and Marcus Echols, and cheerleading coach Shamika Dowlen. According to athletic director Tim Bursey, there are several reasons for the revolving door of coaches the past few years.

“Everyone likes to win; having a team that isn’t winning doesn’t inspire coaches to stay,” Bursey said.

Most of the teams with coaches leaving had back-to-back losing seasons.

Wins vs. losses also matters when Bursey does his end-of-year evaluation.

Other factors considered include player satisfaction and coach commitment.

“A lot of the work depends on the coaches; involvement is key,” Bursey said. “I look at the coaches and wonder ‘… Do they go the extra mile for the players, or do they just show up to the practices and games?’ If not, I may start to look for someone else to go about it a different way.”

Next year’s later start time is another reason for some of the coaches deciding to remove themselves from the staff, as the time difference will greatly extend the commute time for some. Schmidt took a coaching job in Everett to be closer to home. Others cited a lack of unity between coach and players as a reason for departure.

The path forward for next year is still unclear as there are still evaluations to be made. There have been several new hires confirmed to fill vacant positions. There is already a new football and cheerleading coach.

Expectations were high for girls’ varsity Frisbee. The team finally had enough players for a full team and had a number of returning players. Unfortunately, the girls couldn’t play cohesively enough to win many games, scoring only one win against Garfield. Seniors Hue Tien, Jessica Gallardo and Robyn Gamboa and junior Dianne Ciceron led the team.

Track newcomer Zack Brown proved to be an asset to the team, consistently finishing at the top in the 100 meter dash. Brown was the anchor for the boys’ 4x100 relay team. fectively to win games. They ended the season with no official games won, but they were able to win in friendly competitions against other teams.

Juniors Lucas King and Eddie Jenkins were named to the All-Metro team. King was named to the first team while Jenkins earned second team honors. Han Eckelberg, Bariso Hussein, Nha Dao and Santiago Crisanto all earned Honorable Mention.

Senior pitcher Lauren Lee gave a solid performance from the mound this season.

It was a whirlwind season for the tennis team as they advanced to postseason action and sent more players to the second round of Metros in over 25 years. Head Coach Roger Yamaguchi and JV coach Martin Goldman-Kirst were faced with a varsity team full of freshmen. As the season progressed, Yamaguchi was impressed by how much fight the team had.

Rodolfo Baba was a standout for the team, advancing to the first round of the district tournament. Cleveland has not had a tennis player reach the district level in 46 years.

The softball team brought home four wins, beating both Rainier Beach and Franklin twice. Head Coach Megan Claus pointed to senior pitcher Lauren Lee and junior catcher Mariah Fernandez as players to watch because of their fantastic performances.

TRACK Despite being hampered by injuries throughout the season, the track team finished strong with the boys 4x100 relay team advancing to State while the girls came up short during districts. Jordan Wallace, Zack Brown, Rashad Hebert and Reality Jordan ran for the boys.

This was Brown’s first year on the track team and his lightning fast football feet proved worthy. Many of the distance runners set personal best times throughout the season.

Proper preparation prevents poor performance. It’s a motto Simpson lives by as she won’t be taking any time off but spending more time improving her skills.

“I will be working out with my dad and doing tennis camps over the summer to improve,” she said.

On many occasions you can catch Simpson running after school from Cleveland to the

Farmer’s Market. Simpson works hard to be the best she can.

Harris had an exciting season being the only freshman on the boys’ basketball team to move up to varsity. Harris even got a chance to get some playing time in the state tournament, scoring six points against Garfield. The Eagles finished 6th in the 3A State Tournament.

Harris plans to be a leader to incoming freshmen and teach

them the program. Seeing others succeed motivates him.

“Watching somebody else do something before me [kept] me motivated,” Harris said. He is on is way to becoming a solid contributor to the team and still has plenty of time to grow as an athlete.

Nguyen felt the pressure of being in the spotlight, only because she doesn’t want anyone to be disappointed. But by the look of her skills, she is far from

disappointing anyone.

“I feel a little pressure,” she admitted. “People may look up to you and if I mess up they will be disappointed.”

Nguyen plans to work on her game and become a better leader as well as cheer for her teammates.

Stepping into the spotlight isn’t always easy, but with a little hard work it can be very rewarding. Be on the lookout for these rising stars.

The Journal endorses Sanders for president

T

he Cleveland Journal has decided to endorse democratic presidential nominee Bernie Sanders. We feel that Sanders’ values best align with the values and needs of the Cleveland community.

Sanders is a more liberal candidate than slightly conservative Clinton, who tends to support laws and ideals that lean more towards the conservative right. Unlike Clinton, Sanders supports free public college tuition, universal healthcare, and the federal decriminalization of marijuana.

Sanders has also been consistent with his beliefs and stances. He has long been a supporter of gay marriage, against the Trans Pacific Partnership (a dangerous trade agreement that allows the US to turn a blind eye to the abysmal working conditions in the Pacific Rim region), and against the death penalty. Sanders is also against fracking, a disastrous drilling method for natural gases that is ruining the environment.

Ironically, 74-year-old Sanders has the majority of the vote from the under-30 crowd and has attracted more interest from young people than any other presidential candidate from either party. Middle-class and poverty-level Millennials have grown up watching their parents struggle and fret over the futures of their children. And they are tired of it. There is little faith in the current political system, and the “American Dream” appears to be a fading reality as more and more young people are saddled with debilitating student loans that drag them down the second they take them out. Sanders’ campaign promises change, or more importantly − revolution.

Sanders speaks to the hungry, underprivileged youth of America. He taps into the issues the Millennials are most concerned about. He supports a federal $15 minimum wage. He, like almost every young person in America, doesn’t want money to stand in the way of anyone’s education. He wants universal health care, which is always a concern on the peripheral of any 20-something’s mind, as most people are removed from their parent’s insurance at age 25. Sanders has also managed to do something that Clinton cannot, and most likely will never do: inspire young people.

Historically, young voters have the worst turnout record with fewer than 15 percent of all voters in the 2012 election being under 30. This year, Sanders has more votes from people under 30 than both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump combined with more than 1.5 million. The last time a candidate had this type of young voter support was in 2008 when President Obama was elected to his first term.

In the Cleveland community, where a large portion of the students receive free or reduced lunch, the Journal feels that Bernie Sanders is the candidate who stands for all of us. We will continue to support him all the way to the Democratic Convention in Philadelphia next month.
