A WORD FROM THE EDITOR

Aviana. Birdlike. Our cabinet first came into being with the sole goal of constructing meaningful connections within our school. Messenger pigeons were once a staple of society, epitomising precisely what we aim to do with the Student Post: letting students spread their wings and thoughts.

Bypassing the post-pandemic era, our Student Union this year is learning to relish in the essentiality of connection. As the lingering effects of isolation and distance slowly dissipate, the once-muted hallways now reverberate with the joyful chatter of students, their voices intertwining like a vibrant tapestry of shared experiences.

But that is not enough. Gone are the days of fragmented reminiscences. SPCC now thrives on face-to-face interchange, where the nuance and ingenuity of emotion imbue students’ artistic compositions. Every word exchanged serves as a testament to the cohesion of human spirit, a reminder that in tandem, we weave together the best memories.

In this newfound appreciation for connection, the Student Post has become a hub of activity, brimming with chronicles that celebrate the power of interrelation and interpersonal relationships.

From beads of perspiration on students braving the Australian wilderness throughout Rites of Passage, to the palpable sense of festive joy that emanates across the Joint-School Christmas Ball, camaraderie permeates every endeavor.

May this newsletter be the physical relic, a vessel that bears the imprints of countless stories etched upon its surface, whispering tales of St. Paulians’ trials and tribulations. May it inspire us to embark on our own journeys, to seek meaning in interrelation, and to embrace the beauty of interpersonal relationships. May it guide us on our path of discovery.

As a committee member of the Student Union, I was thrilled to take part in the Student Union Committee Orientation, a special teambuilding activity designed to help our committee members get to know one another better and strengthen our team bonds.

One of the highlights of our team-building activity was playing the game "Werewolf."

STRESS RELIF WEEK The Federation of Youth Groups surveyed that around half of Hong Kong students reported “relatively high” stress levels. The same group of students suffered high rates of depression and anxiety that only worsened as they continued their studies.

DISCO DANCE & KARAOKE

Wednesday kicked off Stress Relief Week with a thundering beat. Through a Google Form, our schoolmates contributed to a list of wonderful tunes that set the mood for the main event: Disco and Dance Karaoke, a collaboration with the outstanding Hip-hop Team A.

The Hip-hop team presented an electrifying performance that, accompanied with good music, created a rapturous effect on the audience. We were loud, proud, and satisfied at the magic we made together during a bitesized short lunch break. Though chaotic at times, especially when the Lecture Theater is relatively small in size, the event was an ultimate roaring success that is sure to set a model for SU events to come.

DODGEBALL GAMES

The next two days of Stress Relief Week sent lip-licking for many students: Dodgeball, the fast-paced team sport done in collaboration with the Basketball Club.

The game itself, though lesser known than Basketball, is no less fun and familiar to most students at SPCC. Among the many players, we have both trained young athletes and not-so-muscly students just wanting to have fun. Though, in this game of agility, even experienced Basketball team members may find it difficult to come out top.

In fact, the charm of Dodgeball is like playing a Kahoot game, a student told us. “You have to be consistent … and careful at that to win.”

All in all, Stress Relief Week was a wonderful experience that provided much-needed relaxation for our overworked schoolmates.

SELF-ORGANISED STUDENT ACTIVITIES WEEK?

The Student Activities Week was a week of adventure and treasurable experiences. The seven-day activities allow students to take a break from textbooks and learn knowledge that cannot be taught through books. To begin with, SAW provides students with handson experiences that go beyond the traditional aclassroom setting. By participating in various activities and programs, students can apply their knowledge in real-life situations, enhancing their understanding and retention of concepts.

Moreover, Student Activities Week provides students with exposure to different cultures, environments, and industries. By participating in service trips, healthcare programs, and business programs, students gain a broader perspective of the world, develop a global mindset, and expand their knowledge beyond their immediate surroundings. Career-based programmes can also allow students to gain a deeper understanding of the different careers and to explore diverse career paths. This in turn enables them to choose the most suitable career for themselves in the future.

In addition, this week encourages students to step out of their comfort zones and challenge themselves physically, emotionally, and mentally. Engaging in adventurebased activities, cultural immersions, and environmental exploration helps students develop resilience, selfconfidence, problem-solving skills, and adaptability.

Lastly, SAW creates lasting memories and treasured experiences for students.

The week-long adventure and immersion programs offer unique and exciting opportunities that students may not encounter in their regular academic routine. These experiences often leave a positive and long-lasting impact on students' personal and educational journeys.

OP, one of the most significant events you'll likely experience at SPCC, was put on hold for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, many things have

hanged: the time spent outdoors, the dynamics among

classmates,

and

overall

community. After COVID-19, did the ROP experience change? Was it still as rewarding and enjoyable as the seniors had claimed? Or was it a dreadful experience?

I

I was in Form Three at that time, departing for Australia in early July. I’ll never forget the excitement on the plane, knowing that I would spend the entire month running

around with my friends. However, there was also a sense of fear regarding the unfamiliarity of wild Australia. The unknown insects, the darkness after 5 pm, the seemingly endless and exhausting hikes—it all felt overwhelming.

But all I could do was hope that everything would turn out fine.

As the bus swerved into Kenilworth, I was awestruck by its beauty. The golden rays illuminated the grassy fields, the sky was clear and blue, and a river flowed at the far end of the grassy slope. It was a sight like nothing I had seen before. The sunset quickly faded, and reality settled in.

My roommates and I settled into the dorms, which were located in a barn. I was taken aback by the simplicity of the room—a mud floor, three bunk beds, and nothing more.

There were no sockets, no windows, and no shelves.

SOPHIE TANG’S EPD OUTING TO THE

COASTAL DEVELOPMENT MUSEUM Surprises add a fruitful essence to life.

Originally getting ready for an outing to Shek O, the Form 3 students were unexpectedly met with changing weather conditions, redirecting them to The Coastal Development Museum in Shau Kei Wan. While some of us initially felt disappointed by the cancellation of the orienteering activity, we soon discovered that the museum offered abundant opportunities for learning.

Upon arrival, we were divided into groups to explore the museum. Our journey through its exhibits granted us valuable insights into the history and wars that unfolded in Hong Kong. The museum showcased a wide range of weapons used in various conflicts, including Torpedo installations and port facilities. Additionally, we were able to view the distinct uniforms worn by soldiers throughout history, spanning from the Ming Dynasty to The Volunteers. The stark differences in uniforms, combined with the presence of equipment such as machine guns and badges, truly fascinated us.

During our visit, we were also given the opportunity to explore the surroundings of the museum. My groupmates and I ventured into ditches and casemates, which evoked a sense of empathy for the soldiers and, concurrently, highlighted the significance of peace.

The visit was brimming with captivating details that cannot all be encompassed in this brief account. Overall, this experience proved to be truly memorable, enriching not only our knowledge of history and geography but also making the study of battles more engrossing and relatable.

I still remember my dismay when I was allocated to an advanced council, and after knowing I had to travel for 2 hours just to get to the campus, I almost wanted to chicken out and not participate in the conferences.But unfortunately (as I thought at that time), I had already paid so it would be even more of a waste to not go.

CAN YOU RECALL YOUR MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE DURING YOUR PARTICIPATION IN MUN? After being a delegate for 7 times and chairing twice, I can say without reservation that every conference I have been to has been a thrilling ride of heated debate and socialising.

But to choose one of my most memorable experiences, it would be participating in HARMUN V House of Commons as Ed Davey.

This initial reluctance turned out to be a weekend of fruitful debate and growth as an MUNer. Although it was challenging to be in a council with delegates clearly more experienced than me, it soon occurred to me that if I was unable to compete with them anyway, I should just have fun and enjoy the conference to its fullest.

That’s when I started to be braver in making impromptu speeches and asking POIs, which made me realise how MUN isn’t as scary and stressful as I thought it would be, and it was merely me putting the pressure on myself.

In the end, I was awarded best delegate of the committee, which I would argue to be my biggest achievement in my MUN career.

Not just because of the award but for my breakthrough in overcoming my fear of spontaneous speaking which brought me an unforgettable experience.

Hong Kong Joint School Business Association is a student-led organization that aims to share businessrelated knowledge with secondary school students, as well as providing a platform for aspiring business students to bond together. Throughout the years, we have provided various hands-on activities such as internships and business-related talks, which allow students to delve deeper into the business world and apply what they have learnt.

Being the president of the 10th Hong Kong Joint School Business Association has been an exhilarating and rewarding experience. I have the privilege to collaborate with 8 other executive committee members and sub-committee

members,

who

are

united

by

our

shared

passion

for

business

and

entrepreneurship. We liaise with prominent business leaders and industry experts, who graciously shared their insights and experiences with our members in talks such as our global business taster lecture offered by a professor from HKUST. We also organized a sub-committee orientation day, in which like-minded students get to know one another through relaxing games, chitchats and snacks.

I am very blessed to have the opportunity to be a part of such a wholesome community. We have just kick started our activities for the year, so there is definitely more to look forward to. Stay tuned for our activities and hopefully, we can see you next time!

HKUYL is a non-profit organization with the objective of cultivating leadership abilities among high school students through a

range of events. However, rather than simply being a conventional "leadership program," the union is more akin to a second home for us.

STAGE 1: SOCIAL AWARENESS PROJECT

The Social Awareness Project (SAP) marked the beginning of the Camper journey. By means of engaging workshops and the pinnacle of this initiative—the esteemed World Congress —we attained profound insights into global conflicts and developed a capacity for embracing diverse perspectives.

STAGE 2: COMMUNITY OUTLOOK

Rather than simply attaching to organizations for volunteering, we took the initiative to devise our own plans and organize activities for underprivileged children. Although it was exhausting, seeing the smiles on their faces made it all worthwhile. Additionally, we had the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations with various foreigners residing in Hong Kong. This interaction was particularly valuable since we rarely have the opportunity to meet them faceto-face and gain a deeper understanding of their lives.

STAGE 3: YOUTH LEADERSHIP SEMINAR The third part of our Camper journey was the Youth Leadership Seminar (YLS), which was mainly centered on team-building and personal development. The highlight of YLS was undoubtedly the four-day-three-night camp held during Easter. In the camp, we enjoyed an array of celebration activities including campfire and disco night, where we sang and danced with immense joy. Those memories were so vivid that we could still hear the chanting of UYL cheers in our heads. Despite uplifting celebrations and various exciting mass games, the YLS camp was both physically and mentally demanding due to the exhaustive overnight tasks we had to complete. However, with mutual support among groupmates, we soldiered on and concluded our miraculous journey with original group performances. On the last day of camp, tears were shed by each one of us, and in that very moment, we realized the irreplaceable bond that unites us all.

SAP was followed by the Community Outlook, which provided us with additional chances to contribute to the community.

HOBY WLC 23'

I was honored to be selected as one of the Hong Kong delegates of HOBY WLC’23. Whenever someone asks me about HOBY, the words "enthusiasm" and "inspiring" immediately come to mind. I could still vividly recall how the HOBY staff danced to the music and warmly greeted us with enthusiastic applause as we entered the hall. There were keynote speakers who addressed various topics every day, including interaction and inspiration, making "inspiring" another word that comes to mind. And this was where I learned that moral education is absent in the upbringing of people in the USA, unlike us in Hong Kong. I gained not only from remarkable speakers, but also from other open-minded delegates. HOBY hasn't transformed me as an individual, but it has inspired me to pursue change. During a session called "Community Space," ten of our HK delegates suddenly felt compelled to establish an organization to aid the underprivileged in Hong Kong.

Although this endeavor did not materialize due to our busy schedules back in Hong Kong, I believe that we have all developed a community-oriented mindset and undergone a change in our perspectives.

The 12th Inter-School Competition of Project Learning on Hong Kong’s History and Culture

Tiana Yung Fact-checking and refining our writing was also an arduous task, but through efficient teamwork we were able to pull through. We visited the Tai Po Wong Yeh Temple on a pleasant morning. As we entered, we were immediately enveloped by the scent of incense, accompanied by the excited chatter from elderly Hoklo ladies. The research process was difficult as there are limited written records for intangible culture, so finding academic sources for our research was challenging. Hence, we relied mostly on an interview with Miss Ranae So, a Hoklo and founder of preservation project Marital Tie on Sea, as well as a field trip to Tai Po to investigate.

Swimming GIRLS

There’s nothing as extraordinary about my journey to be frank…The last time I attended a swimming class was 8-9 years ago, the memories were so vague that I barely recall them looking back in hindsight. The reason why I started swimming this year was merely due to a relay event in the swimming gala when my friends in the team enthusiastically persuaded me to be a part of the swimming team as well. That’s when I started swimming every day, engaging in school training during lunchtime, after school, or even at night when I am done with all the assignments.

I am thankful for the fact that they have been super supportive and encouraging, even when they were dealing with heavy academic burdens as well. Undoubtedly, one month of continuous training is inadequate for me to become a fair swimmer, yet I have unearthed invaluable friendships, perseverance, as well as a stronger mentality through it.

“Work Hard. Dream Big.” Dreams are always possible when we strive for excellence.

Starting from last year, we were already determined to become the overall champion in the Inter School Swimming Competition (division two), we are committed to redeem

our place in the division one competition. Yet, this year’s situation was especially difficult for us. The competition was set in the middle of October, which means that we only had just more than a month to sharpen our individual skills and get familiarized again with our relay partners after two months of summer holiday.

Luckily, the challenge was overcome with our teammates' enthusiastic participation, our coaches’ professional training and our school and schoolmates’ never-ending support. Everyone tried their best to attend every training session despite the academic burden. Some even chose to sacrifice their precious lunch breaks just for some extra practice time. With unwavering determination, indomitable spirit, and unbreakable unity, we overcome all the highs and lows. And now, we are proud to say that we, the swimming team, have achieved another milestone – making it back to Division One.

However, this will not be our end. We will continue to strive for excellence with self-discipline and perseverance; we will continue to train ourselves to the best of our potentials; we will continue to overcome new challenges with courage and confidence. Even though future competitions might be challenging, we are not afraid. With Strength, Potential, Courage, Confidence, we are definite that we can overcome every obstacle lying ahead. Last but not least, we are thankful for all the support from our schoolmates, friends, teachers, and Mr Poon. It is your tremendous support that motivates us to continue our journey even in the hardest times. Look forward to our good news again next year.

Ms Lilian Chow’s take on Interpersonal Relationships Is technology good for relationships?

I see many ways in which it’s a leap forward. For example, we wouldn’t have the time to do this “interview” without technology. But at the same time, non-digitalised human interaction is so important and truly is irreplaceable. I keep in good contact with my friends in the US and other countries but it really isn’t quite the same; I would love if I could just go grab a coffee or hang out at their homes but since that isn’t a possibility, at least we have Zoom! I do think though with a wise use of technology, relationships can grow stronger; I don’t think for example that sending reels and stickers to my friends “deteriorates” our relationships, as long as these don’t replace the genuine and authentic conversations and encounters we also have.

How do you view online relationships in friends and dating?

I think it works for some people: I have quite a few friends who met their current spouses online. Personally, I’ve found it very hard to maintain relationships that are purely online. It’s probably also because I’m incredibly introverted in nature and so there isn’t really much incentive or motivation for me to keep online relationships going. I think as long as we’re being safe, cautious and wise about the way we meet and develop relationships, the internet does provide opportunities to get to know more people from different backgrounds and perhaps some of these new connections could surprise us.

Introduce us to your NGO. What motivated you to start it?

Light Their Rights is a youth NGO that aims to serve the underprivileged, with a focus on youth and homeless. COVID-19 allowed me to unveil the dark side of society -- students who lived in tin-roofed house had no broadband connection for online school; children who came from low-income families couldn't afford any extra-curricular activities, given the social distance policy that didn't allow them to gather at social centres; homeless people who couldn't even fill their stomachs...Shocked, I started this initiative Light Their Rights, in hope to transfer my knowledge and skills to the wider society, and help in every way possible.

What were the initial difficulties or challenges you faced when starting the organisation?

For one, we weren't able to find target groups, especially for activities in the youth branch. Having tried outreaching to other NGOs and student-led organisations, we weren't able to find them. Nevertheless, through continuous promotion on social media and service activities that can be held among ourselves (e.g. homeless visits), we were able to collaborate with NGOs and hold our events successfully.

To add on, recruiting members was certainly a challenge. As I founded Light Their Rights at a rather young age, many weren't interested in joining. Eventually, by inviting my peers and expanding the circle step by step, we were able to gather numerous community-minded young individuals.

How do you approach the management and expansion of your organisation's influence, and how do you seek external help when it is needed?

Social media is integral in this process -- by setting up an instagram and facebook account, alongside with our website, we were able to promote our events effectively. While graphics and aesthetics may be an important factor, including substantive and actual content is equally important. Other than that, promotion through other pages can help reach a wider audience and expand the sphere of influence.

In terms of external help, I believe Light Their Rights depended more on internal work and planning. The major external help we had was from supporting organisations and partners, all of which provided us with opportunities to develop. When needed, we'd 28 send out invitational emails to those who have approached us, or those that we find bigger potential to collaborate with.

What have you personally gained from your experience of running this organization?

Leadership and logistics skills are my biggest outcomes -- Light Their Rights is not only a youth NGO, but a small community. As the president, I have understood the importance of being a "listener" while being a leader, to integrate others' opinions into mine. Beyond that, running this organisation built my confidence, as I had opportunities to be a tutor, be a speaker, be a helper etc. Finally, I gained liaison skills as well. With the chance to communicate with various external organisations, I have been obtaining more and more experiences that taught me how to effectively liaise with others.

What tips or advice do you have for individuals who are interested in starting their own NGO?

Planning is the most important element when starting an NGO, while it's understandable that one might wish to start an organisation as soon as possible, only by planning before can one truly make an impact and gain the best experience.

Other than drafting plans or recruiting core members beforehand, preparing mentally is equally crucial, for example understanding the large amount of work involved.

VETAMIN Difficulties and Challenges along the Journey

It was never a smooth journey for us. Limited interaction time caused difficulties in understanding members of Vetamin on a deep level. As Zoom interviews were only 10 minutes long, we found it quite challenging to ensure commitment and passion of team members. Team building in an online setting is a massive challenge and requires accommodating time zones such as 11 PM in Hong Kong and 4 or 5 AM in Canada.

Fruitful Gains from this Journey COMMUNICATION We were originally timid and quiet, but we pushed out of their comfort zones to make a greater impact. Effectiveness of communication is crucial, particularly in keeping team members on task.

Through striking a balance between being firm and friendly when necessary, we found ourselves becoming more expressive in our leadership style.

We’ve also struggled with procrastination in the past but has made significant improvements in her time management skills. As leaders, we take the initiative to contact every team member, shaping our sentences in a way that is not intimidating or annoying to empathizes with others' perspectives.

What were the initial challenges you faced when starting the organization?

GYWA started as a small-scaled idea when I was still in Form 1 - which was certainly difficult considering my lack of confidence, soft skills & connections with professional in the field. I was unable to reach a large audience & could not find speakers/ partners for upcoming events.

But as time went on, I reached out to other like-minded students across the globe, having the short-term goal of making friends before established professional connections - making it a lot easier to find collaborators for larger-scale projects.

Global Youth Wellness Association (theLifestylePerfection) is a completely student-run non-profit organization that aims to empower teens to create healthy & balanced lifestyles, cultivating work-life balance for the benefit of their physical & emotional well-being. In the past, we’ve held online webinars & workshops in relation to SDG 3, collaborating with over 50 youth organisations from 5 continents.

GYWA, as an international initiative, heavily relies on external support due to the hefty workload - whether it be the individuals in our team, mentors or partner organizations.

As open-minded individuals, GYWA always welcomes any helping hands, like youth volunteers, professional mentors and sponsors. We’re willing to open ourselves to constructive criticism as we acknowledge the importance of dealing with difficult situations from various perspectives, for us to manage and appeal to our diversified audience.

What have you personally gained from your experience of running this organization?

Okay so personally, it has been one of the best experiences running GYWA alongside lots of talented individuals from different backgrounds, cultures & ethnicities. As a team, we’ve had our ups and downs together - like attempting to complete an 8 page infographic within 30 minutes and running a last-minute sharing session to an entire audience without any sort of preparation. The hands-on experiences with my teammates (some of whom are now my closest friends) were no doubt unforgettable memories for a lifetime.

Starting my own NGO pushed me to explore topics beyond the classroom, as research, teamwork & collaboration has taught me skills & lessons a book could never. GYWA is my inspiration & my motivation - showing me that there is so much more when you take a step ahead into the real world out there.

What tips do you have for individuals interested in starting their own NGO?

Don’t be afraid to reach out for help! You yourself might not be able to manage event management, graphic design, PR, content creation all at once. My tip is to find some like-minded buddies to kickstart your initiative with you - not only will it 33 decrease your personal workload, but it’s also a great bonding experience.
