Guest Artist
Joshua Redman is one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists to have emerged in the 1990s. Born in Berkeley, California, he is the son of legendary saxophonist Dewey Redman and dancer Renee Shedroff. In 1991 Redman graduated from Harvard College summa cum laude and had already been accepted by Yale Law School, but he deferred entrance for what he believed was only going to be one year. Instead, he moved to New York City and immediately found himself immersed in the city’s burgeoning jazz scene. Five months later Redman was named winner of the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition. Since then, Redman has worked and played with a vast array of jazz luminaries, released over 20 albums (Warner & Nonesuch), and garnered top honors in critics and readers polls of DownBeat, Jazz Times, The Village Voice, and Rolling Stone
Originally from Watertown, Wisconsin, Chris Behrens attended the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana), where he earned a degree in jazz studies (piano) and teacher certification. In 2010 Mr. Behrens received his master of music education from VanderCook College (Chicago) and his National Board Certification in 2014. He has studied jazz piano with John Harmon, Tony Caramia, Michael Kocour, and Mark Davis.
Mr. Behrens has taught full-time since 1996 in the School District of Beloit (Wisconsin). From 1996 to 2001 he taught at Aldrich Middle School, and he currently teaches at Beloit Memorial High School, where he directs the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Pep Band, Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, and Jazz Combos and teaches a course in jazz improvisation. Under his direction, the Jazz Orchestra has been an Essentially Ellington Finalist Band for 12 out of the past 16 years. He has been an adjudicator for WSMA for the past 25 years and has been the WSMA State Honors Jazz Band Coordinator/Rhythm Section Coach and WMEA Jazz Chair. He also serves as clinician and adjudicator for Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Regional Essentially Ellington Festivals, held throughout the United States.
