The Lone Peak band program is directed by Ms . Jamie Kim . Ms . Kim is from Wahiawa, Hawaii . A talented conductor and saxophonist, Ms . Kim has a large love and passion for music and a deep commitment to helping students grow through music education . She is in her twelfth year of teaching and her seventh year at Lone Peak High School .

Ms . Kim has conducted and taught in many different settings: Lone Peak HS (’19–current), Judge Memorial Catholic HS (’18–’19), Kamehameha Schools Maui Campus (’16–’17), Herriman HS (’15–’16), Westlake HS (’13–’15), Cougar Marching Band as a TA and graduate assistant (’12, ’18), and Wasatch Winds Community Band (’18) .

During her college career, Ms . Kim performed with the BYU Wind Symphony, BYU Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Lab Bands, Saxophone Quartets, Mariachi Band, BYU Cougar Marching Band, and Cougar Pep Bands . Ms . Kim has taught AP Music Theory, Wind Ensembles, Jazz Bands, Marching Bands, Music Technology, Pit Orchestras, Liturgical Music, Elementary Band, Orchestra, Choir, Pop/Rock Ensemble, Music Appreciation, Percussion, and Ukulele .

Ms . Kim is a frequent clinician/adjudicator for both jazz and wind ensembles . She studied saxophone under Ray Smith, Michael Tobian, Ben Nichols, Daron Bradford, and Jory Woodis and studied conducting under Kory Kastseanes and Kirt Saville . She has received numerous Citation of Excellence Awards for Marching Band & Concert Band throughout her years of teaching from the Utah Bandmasters Association . Ms . Kim also notably received an Outstanding Jazz Educator Award

(2024) and a Certificate of Achievement for taking Lone Peak to the JEN Performance in 2024 . She’s also received Caleb Chapman's Soundhouse Ray Smith Music Educator Award (2021) .

Ms . Kim earned her bachelor of music in music education from Brigham Young University (’13) and completed 20+ credits of her master's in music education at Brigham Young University (’15-’18) . In addition, she is an MBA Social Impact Emphasis Recipient (’18) through the BYU Marriott School and Ballard Center . Ms . Kim served as the vice president of band for the Utah Music Educators Association (’22–’24) .

Anna Shepherd

Anna Shepherd recently graduated from BYU with a degree in music education, emphasizing percussion performance . At BYU she participated in many renowned ensembles, such as the Tangents Percussion Quartet, the Percussion Ensemble, and the steel band, and she served as principal percussionist in both the BYU Philharmonic Orchestra and Wind Symphony . As a member of the Tangents Quartet, Mrs . Shepherd has traveled, performed, and filmed music videos in various locations . Notable highlights include filming a quartet video in Laie, Hawaii, and the Great Saltair in Utah .

Mrs . Shepherd is passionate about music education, particularly percussion education . She completed her student teaching at American Fork High School and has worked with marching band programs such as American Fork HS, Lehi HS, Spanish Fork HS, and Coppell HS (in Coppell, Texas) . After graduation, she worked as a substitute teacher, private percussion lesson teacher, and adjudicator for solo and ensemble events and the Utah Day of Percussion .

Mrs . Shepherd is excited and grateful for the opportunity to be

the new percussion director at Lone Peak High School and to work alongside Ms . Jamie Kim . She looks forward to continuing the great legacy of the Lone Peak percussion program and helping to elevate and grow the program further . Mrs . Shepherd loves dogs, reading, and The Office, and currently resides in Provo with her husband, Blake, who is also a drummer .

About the Conductor

Shawn Smith serves as the director of the Brigham Young University School of Music, as well as professor of conducting and director of bands . Prior to his appointment at BYU, he spent 16 years as director of bands at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Texas A&M–Corpus Christi .

Smith holds a doctor of musical arts degree in instrumental conducting from Arizona State University and master of music and bachelor of music education degrees from Louisiana State University and Boise State University, respectively .

In high demand as a band and orchestra conductor, clinician, and adjudicator, Smith has been invited to conduct professional and educational ensembles throughout the United States, South America, Central America, and Europe, including concerts with world-renowned trombonist Joseph Alessi, Grammy Award–winning chamber ensemble Eighth Blackbird, Tony-nominated Broadway and television star Derek Klena, “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, and the United States Air Force Band .

Equally at home with opera and musical theater productions, Smith has conducted pit orchestras for The Marriage of Figaro and a six-week run of Les Misérables . His performances have been heard numerous times on American Public Media’s Performance Today, the most popular classical music radio program in the United States . In 2015 Smith was awarded second place for the American Prize in Conducting— Professional Band Division .

In the area of research, Smith has been published in the Journal of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles and in Alta Musica, and he has presented his

research at national and international conferences in the United States, Europe, and South America . Smith has also presented numerous educational clinics, workshops, and speeches, most notably at the International Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Illinois, and at state music conferences throughout the United States .

As a public school teacher, Smith served as director of bands and orchestra at one of the largest high schools in Idaho, where he administered a very successful comprehensive instrumental music program .

An accomplished trumpeter, Smith has performed with the Corpus Christi Symphony (Texas), the Boise Philharmonic Orchestra (Idaho), the Acadiana Symphony (Louisiana), Keith Brion’s New Sousa Band, and the Temptations .

During his tenure as director of bands at Texas A&M–Corpus Christi, Smith received the Texas A&M System Teaching Excellence Award twice . Smith holds honorary memberships in Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Sigma Alpha Iota, and Kappa Kappa Psi . He also holds memberships in the Utah Music Educators Association, the National Band Association, the College Band Directors National Association, and the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles .

John Locke

Dr . John R . Locke served on the UNCG School of Music faculty as director of bands, director of summer music camps, conductor of the Wind Ensemble, and conducting teacher from 1982 until his retirement in December 2018 . He holds the bachelor and master of music degrees from West Virginia University and the doctor of education degree from the University of Illinois .

Previously, Dr . Locke held teaching positions in music at West Virginia University, Southeast Missouri State University, and the University of Illinois . He has conducted band performances throughout the world, including national conventions of the MENC, CBDNA, and ABA; the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC; the Strathmore Center in Washington, DC; Lincoln Center in New York City; Dvořák Hall in Prague, Czech Republic; Innsbruck, Austria; and Bologna and Rome, Italy . Twice, the UNCG Wind Ensemble earned critical acclaim from The Washington Post following concert performances in the nation’s capital . Locke has conducted numerous “Tribute to John Philip Sousa” concerts at UNCG, as well as across the country . Under Locke’s leadership, the UNCG Wind Ensemble has released 21 commercially available compact discs, including fireworks!, which was a GRAMMY® entry list 2011 CD in two categories, Classical Album of the Year and Best Orchestral Performance . In addition, he has guest conducted the U .S . Air Force Band, U .S . Army Field Band, U .S . Navy Band, “The President’s Own” U .S . Marine Band, the Dallas Wind Symphony, and numerous all-state honor bands and intercollegiate bands, including the CBDNA National Intercollegiate Band in 2023 .

Dr . Locke has served as editor of the North Carolina Music

Educator and has published articles on band and wind ensemble literature in the Journal of Band Research and in Winds Quarterly . He is past-president of the North Carolina Music Educators Association, representing 2,200 members . Dr . Locke is a recipient of Phi Mu Alpha’s Orpheus Award and has received the National Band Association Citation of Excellence on three occasions . He is a National Arts Associate of Sigma Alpha Iota . In 1989 Dr . Locke was among the youngest conductors ever to be elected to membership in the prestigious American Bandmasters Association . In 1994 he received the Phi Beta Mu International Fraternity Outstanding Bandmaster of the Year Award, presented at the Midwest International Band Clinic in Chicago . Dr . Locke is past-president of the Southern Division of College Band Directors National Association and hosted the Southern Division Convention at UNCG in February 2000 . In 2002 Dr . Locke was nominated for the O . Max Gardner Award, the highest award in the 16-campus UNC System . He also received the Outstanding Music Teacher Award in the UNCG School of Music in 2003 .

In 2005 Dr . Locke was elected president of the American Bandmasters Association and received the Albert Austin Harding Award from the American School Band Directors Association . In 2007 he received the Old North State Award from NC governor Mike Easley “for dedication and service beyond excellence to the state of North Carolina .” In 2009 Locke became editor of the Journal of Band Research, the premier scholarly band publication in the world, begun in 1964 . In July 2012 Locke was honored by NC governor Beverly Perdue with the Order of the Longleaf Pine Award, the highest civilian honor in North Carolina . In 2014 Locke was named the Marion Stedman Covington Stedman Distinguished Professor of Music at UNCG . In 2018 Locke became the seventh person inducted into the NCMEA Hall of Fame .

At UNCG Dr . Locke was the founder of the summer music camp program, now the largest university music camp in America, enrolling over 2,000 students annually and served by a staff

of 170 professionals . He was also the founder of the Carolina Band Festival and Conductors Conference . Since 1977 he administered summer music camps for over 67,000 students . He is in constant demand as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator for band festivals throughout the United States and Canada .

Mary Schneider

Mary K . Schneider is professor of conducting and director of bands at Eastern Michigan University, where she conducts the EMU Wind Symphony, teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in conducting and music education, and oversees the comprehensive university bands program . Prior to this appointment, Dr . Schneider held a teaching position at the University of Minnesota School of Music and had a successful career as a secondary school instrumental music educator .

Active nationally and internationally as a guest conductor and clinician, Dr . Schneider has served as an adjudicator for the Music For All National Concert Band Festival, the Thailand International Wind Symphony Competition, and the Illinois SuperState Concert Band Festival . She served as clinician and chief adjudicator for the Victorian School Music Festival in Melbourne, Australia, and featured instructor of the ABODA Conducting Symposium in Sydney, New South Wales . Schneider has been an invited guest conductor of the U .S . Air Force Band, Dallas Winds, Sydney Conservatorium of Music Wind Symphony, Concordia Santa Fe, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp Festival & Staff Bands, and Wheaton Municipal Band, and is a frequent guest conductor of regional and all-state honor bands throughout the United States .

Elected to the prestigious American Bandmasters Association

in 2013, Dr . Schneider served as president of the North Central Division of the College Band Directors National Association from 2021 to 2023—the first woman elected to leadership since the inception of the division—and currently serves on the Music Education Committee of CBDNA . A strong advocate for new wind music, she has participated in commissioning and/or premiering over three dozen works for wind band, and her ensembles frequently collaborate with a diverse group of composers . In addition to published articles in the GIA book series Teaching Music Through Performance in Band, she has presented on the topic of wind band repertoire at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, and she is a frequent invited lecturer on the celebrated American composer John Corigliano and his Symphony No . 3 for large wind ensemble, “Circus Maximus .”

Schneider holds a doctoral degree in conducting from the University of Texas at Austin and degrees in horn performance and music education from the New England Conservatory of Music and the University of Connecticut, having graduated with distinction in performance honors from the former . She is a member of MSBOA, Kappa Kappa Psi, and Tau Beta Sigma and serves as Michigan chair for the National Band Association .

Marcellus Brown

Marcellus Brown is director of bands emeritus at Boise State University . Under his leadership, the university band program has become one of the outstanding wind band programs in the Northwest . During Professor Brown’s tenure, the Boise State University Symphonic Winds was invited to perform at a College Band Directors National Association National Conference and at the 81st American Bandmasters Association Annual Conference . Professor Brown has done extensive work as a guest conductor, clinician,

and adjudicator throughout the United States as well as in Canada and Australia . Upon his retirement (May 2023) as director of bands at Boise State University, Professor Brown accepted a one-year position as a visiting professor in wind band conducting at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music . In January 2025 Professor Brown accepted a one-term position as the director of the Interlochen Arts Academy Wind Symphony . Since fall 1992 he has been the director of the Treasure Valley Concert Band . In 2007 he accepted the position of conductor for the Treasure Valley’s Hymns of Thanksgiving Orchestra .

Professor Brown established the Boise State University Summer Chamber Music Camp, which encourages and promotes the performance of chamber music for secondary school students and champions great composers from our past and contemporary composers (jazz, pop, Broadway, and motion pictures) from the 20th and 21st centuries .

During his tenure at Boise State University, he has been recognized for his work and dedication as an educator . He has been the recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award and the Faculty/Staff Larry G . Selland Humanitarian Award . In 2005 Professor Brown was elected into the American Bandmasters Association, and in December 2022 Professor Brown was honored to be the recipient of the National Band Association’s Al and Gladys Wright Distinguished Legacy Award . In 2023 he was inducted into the All-Northwest Band Directors Association, and in December 2024 at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, he was awarded the Kappa Kappa Psi Distinguished Service Medal in Instrumental Music Education . The Distinguished Service to Music Medal is Kappa Kappa Psi’s highest honor .

About the BYU Wind Symphony

The finest woodwind, brass, and percussion players at Brigham Young University perform with the Wind Symphony, under the direction of Shawn Smith . The BYU Wind Symphony maintains an active performance schedule with programming that ranges from wind band classics to some of the newest wind repertoire . Participation in commissioning consortiums and hosting composers and guest conductors on campus offer ensemble members wonderful musical experiences .

The BYU Wind Symphony has performed with world-renowned artists, including New York Philharmonic principal trombonist Joseph Alessi, Grammy Award–winning chamber ensemble Eighth Blackbird, Tony-nominated Broadway and television star Derek Klena, and the popular vocal trio GENTRI . The ensemble has been honored with invitations to perform at national and division conferences of the College Band Directors National Association, the American Bandmasters Association National Conference, and the international conference of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles .

As BYU’s premier wind band, the ensemble has performed throughout the United States and in over twenty countries, including China, Japan, South Korea, Mongolia, Australia, New Zealand, and many European countries . Recent concert tours include Australia (May 2018), Texas (May 2019), Spain/ Portugal (May 2023), South Korea (July 2024), and Brazil (May 2026) . Their latest album, Latin Dances, was released in 2024 and is available on all streaming services .
