Metaphoric Generic Box An overdose of form can be easily discovered in the recent projects of Asian metropolises such as Seoul or Dubai. Today’s designers are facing a pressuring environment forcing them to create extravagant forms. The ironic lining in such phenominon is that, the abundance of extreme forms is degrading the whole architecture into a monotonous state.

Nothing is special anymore.

Therefore, this project is a result of conceiving a generic cube form against today’s overdose of form. This project aims to tackle various issues of metropolitan life in a skyscraper, rather than clinging on the unrealistic mirage of form.

Metropolitan Life Accumulation : Collective Zenga The stacking of the blocks of Zenga holds great potential for the strategy of void composition. From the juxtaposition of the blocks, various types of structures can be generated, such as cantilevered terraces, subtractive balconies or bridges, etc. This combination of clusters provide everyday spaces for people to live, work, and interact in, giving the tenants of the skyscraper an alternative of metropolitan life in a vertical sense.

This skyscraper is consisted of four main programs ; residential, commercial, office, and botanical garden. The function of the botanical garden is to improve the conditions of the remaining programs. The tenants will be enhanced in quality of life with the experience of adjacence of the botanical garden.

Maximized terrace space will be generated in the accumaltion of blocks, each benefiting from the garden in air quality and enrichness of the metropolitan life.

Views This building, measuring over 200 meters in height, provides excellent views of the Han River and the metropolis.

Incision of Volume To emphasize the rhythmical sensation in the elevation, two incisions are made, dividing the envelope into three parts. Each incision is consisted of spaces with minimum columns and maximized free space and viewing.

Program Distribution / Unit Aggregation The combination methodology differs in mainly three ways ; maximizing the terrace garden, connection by bridge, connection by escalator. The resulting elements surround the atrium which is connected vertically, integrating the interactions in three or four floors at a time.

Various programs such as retail stores, auditoriums, residnences, offices, etc. entangles, creating congestion which reinforces the metropolitan life.

The formerly mentioned aggregation devices well organize the verical and horizontal access. Circulation with maximized connection boosts interaction between the units in the skyscraper. Attractive cantilever units reminiscent of the Laputa - floating island provides a spectacular vertical view.

Botanical Garden There are three seperated major ventilation zones within the whole skyscraper. The contaminated air from metropolis enters the building via the botanical gardens, functioning as the natural filters of the architectural organism.

Seaside Library - Mountainous Reading Academic, 2014

Alien Mountain Membrane The geography of Denmark is mainly consisted of flatlands. With the highest point being only 100 meters above sea level, the dynamic topographies and geometries of the mighty mountains are an alien concept to the Danish. The main proposal of this project is to introduce the charisma of the mountain in the form of a membrane to the urban context of Copenhagen.

Metonymy of Hilltop Communities Instead of the traditional bookcases and desks of the generic library, the acclivities and declivities of the mountainous form is disintegrated into 340 millimeter intervals, providing the occupants with seating and bookshelves. The open storage system of books combined with the mountainous topography creates many spaces for communal reading, as such topographies shaped communities in mountainous geographical locations such as Nepal, Switzerland, or China.

Art Museum - Intersecting Defamiliarization Academic, 2014

Defamiliarization Contemporary art of this era has become that is not of pure aesthetic appreciation, but that of understanding the originality of brand new ideas of artists. Since all artists strive to create their own originality in the rapid flows of modern art, it has become nearly impossible to perceive and appreciate a work of contemporary art individually, apart from others. In such circumstances, contemporary art welcomes different interpretations from different directions, thus making it even more difficult to achieve a collective understanding of a piece of art, a series, a collection of an artist, or a movement. For such a collective understanding, a view from above, a viewpoint to understand differences contextually is required. This is considered the crucial standpoint in the following project.

Public Areas & Entrances The whole complex faces the main street on the east direction. A cul-de-sac also passes by the southern facade of the building. Since the subway station, the primary means to arrive to the museum is directly north on the main road, it was much needed to provide a public open space rather than occupy the space that can be a

buffer of the urban scale and architectural scale. On the south side, the cul-de sac will provide the access for visitors in cars and trucks delivering the artworks. A small pocket space is introduced in this process, creating an intimate garden that has the contrast of the new and old architecture.

Concept: Multiple Perspectives In the architectural interpretation of contemporary art, it was perceived that modern art tends to be more intellectually read than appreciated, because of the tendencies of modern art which strive to bring something new to the table, breaking away from convention. Appreciating and understanding art under

such circumstances require a viewpoint where the person can compare and see the bigger picture. The space is fractured in the overlapped portion to provide such space where trajectories of vision infinitely intersects, providing a chaotic yet contextual understanding of space and ultimately, contemporary art.

Art Gallery - Borderless Academic, 2012

Disintegrating the Boundary The art scene of today finds its motives from varied perspectives of both inside and outside of art itself.

Movements that strive to achieve its own uniqueness not only differentiates itself from the past tense of art, but also finds its unique position in society itself; the perception of people. Art becomes something to be read, not appreciated. To gain pleasure from the chaos of such ‘floating’ positions the art movements assume, one mustgain a contextual perspective that addresses art from multiple points of view. This project aims to generate a new typology which makes possible the contextual understanding of the ‘floating’ positions of movements, while yet giving respect to the uniques of each within juxtapositions.

Plan The architecture is consisted of incomplete volumes which intersect with one another.

Providing two directions to reach the exhibition spaces, the incompleteness of each volume opens to one direction of the site, bringing the exhibition space in the same topological relations with the outdoor space. The access, into each exhibition is provided between two other exhibition volumes, which are in the opposite direction and will be perceived as figures in the process of entering.

Reaching the exhibition space, the visitor acknowledges that the ground which gave accent to the figures of other volumes have gradually formed the exhibition space, which is perceived as the figure from the opposite direction. This inverse intersection is repeated through the site, representing the multiple perspectives required to appreciate the chaotic juxtaposition of contemporary art.
