1 00 YEARS OF THE BYU COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS AND COMMUNICATIONS AND 150 YEARS OF BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY

Although Brigham Young Academy had organized choirs and groups to perform at various events in its early history, the College of Fine Arts wasn't officially established until 1925, under the leadership of Dean Gerrit de Jong (pictured at left). He served for 34 years in that capacity, followed by nine more deans to date: Conan E. Mathews, Clawson Y. Cannon, Lorin F. Wheelwright, Lael J. Woodbury, James (Jim) Mason, Bruce Christensen, Newell Dayley, Stephen Jones, and Ed Adams.

Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future

The year 2025 marks two significant milestones in the rich history of Brigham Young University: the sesquicentennial celebration of the university itself, and the centennial of the College of Fine Arts and Communications. Established in 1925 as the first college of fine arts west of the Mississippi, the college has spent the past 100 years shaping artists of both exceptional talent and deep faith. Its legacy includes a century of powerful music, dance, and theatre performances that continue to uplift and inspire audiences.

This year also marks a moment of transition as we express heartfelt gratitude to Dean Ed Adams, whose visionary leadership has guided the college through unprecedented growth, including the completion of the BYU Music Building and the soon-to-be-unveiled BYU Arts Building. As we look forward to welcoming a new dean, we remain committed to the college’s founding vision and artistic excellence. We invite you to join us in celebrating this historic milestone and to experience the inspiring tradition of BYU’s OnStage performances— where the past meets the future in every note, movement, and word.

Spring/Summer

Before the BYU BRAVO! Series was known as such, the BYU Lyceum Series endeavored to bring internationally renowned talent to the BYU community.

On December 5, 1938, celebrated pianist and composer Sergei Rachmaninoff gave a thrilling performance at the Provo Tabernacle to a standing-roomonly audience. The concert's organizer, Harold R. Clark, observed that Rachmaninoff donned electric gloves during the intermission to keep his hands warm and nimble for the second half of the performance.

Hamid Rahmanian’s Song of the North Song of the North is a large-scale, cinematic performance combining the manual art of shadow puppetry with projected animation to tell the courageous tale of Princess Manijeh, a heroine from ancient Persia. Our female hero uses her superpowers to rescue her beloved from a perilous predicament—and to prevent a war. Adapted from the Shahnameh: The Book of Persian Kings (written over 1,000 years ago), Song of the North is a family-friendly, 80-minute performance. Created by 2014 Guggenheim Fellow Hamid Rahmanian, this production features an original musical score by celebrated Iranian composers Ramin Torkian and Azam Ali.
