We are excited to bring you another year of performances from BYU Arts and the College of Fine Arts and Communications. No matter where we are on campus, we continue to provide an excellent variety of high-quality entertainment.

This fall will see both the School of Music and our BRAVO! Series fully utilizing the newly completed spaces in the Music Building. Plan now to experience the acoustics in our state-of-the-art Concert Hall—you won’t be disappointed.

World-class performers coming to BYU include multiple winners of Grammy, Emmy, and Tony awards, as well as a MacArthur Genius Grant recipient and the BBC Radio 2 Musician of the Year. Add to that our own incredible BYU choirs, orchestras, bands, dance ensembles, filmmakers, theatre troupes, musical theatre performers, and recitals by students and faculty, and we have something for everyone to enjoy.

Please indicate any special needs or requests when you place your order. Accessible seating and parking are available. Assisted-listening devices are available for selected performances from the ushers or the house manager. Other accommodations can be made by contacting the Ticket Office in advance. American Sign Language interpretation is available for all TMA mainstage productions. See pages 44–51 for dates.

Children under the age of six, including babes in arms, are not admitted to performances unless specifically indicated otherwise. Food and drink are prohibited in all performance venues.

UTAH SYMPHONY: ¡CELEBRACIÓN SINFÓNICA!

This annual concert, a staple in the Salt Lake community, comes to BYU for the first time to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with iconic Latin American orchestral, popular, and traditional music. Enrico Lopez-Yañez, the Principal Pops Conductor of the Nashville Symphony and a well-known conductor of popular music, leads the Utah Symphony in this celebratory evening.

Broadway power couple Santino and Jessica Fontana join forces for this duo concert of musical theatre favorites. Jessica Fontana’s credits include Broadway’s Baby It’s You! and the title role in Cinderella. Santino Fontana provided the voice for Prince Hans in Disney’s hit film Frozen and originated the lead role in Broadway’s Tootsie, for which he won a Tony Award. Join this stellar husband-and-wife team for an unforgettable performance.

WHEN YOU WISH UPON A STAR: A JAZZ TRIBUTE TO 100 YEARS OF DISNEY

Celebrate 100 years of Disney through the lens of jazz with the five-piece house band of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, led by pianist and music director Sean Mason and featuring vocalists Kim Nalley and Sasha Dobson. Hear jazz renditions of iconic favorites like “Someday My Prince Will Come” and “Everybody Wants to Be a Cat” in this tribute to the 100year legacy of Disney.

ITZHAK PERLMAN WITH THE BYU PHILHARMONIC

We welcome the incomparable Itzhak Perlman back for a rare twonight engagement, this time performing the Mendelssohn violin concerto with the BYU Philharmonic as part of the gala celebration of the opening of the Music Building. The winner of fifteen Grammy Awards, four Emmy Awards, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Itzhak Perlman is a titan in the field of classical music.

WINDSCAPE WOODWIND QUINTET AND ORION STRING QUARTET

The Orion String Quartet and Windscape quintet collaborate in a performance of the late flutist Samuel Baron’s transcription of Bach’s Art of the Fugue for string quartet and wind quintet. Join these two critically acclaimed chamber ensembles, both known for their performances of classical masterworks as well as new works of the 20th and 21st centuries, for an evening of Bach reinterpreted alongside standard favorites.

MICHAEL MOSCHEN

Widely regarded as the father of contact juggling, Michael Moschen dazzles with his new show, Mysterious Forces, an exploration of creativity and the creative process. Renowned as both a solo performer and collaborator, Moschen has performed with leading circus arts companies and Off-Broadway acts across the world, and is the only variety artist to receive a MacArthur Fellowship. His work extends to the films Hair, Annie, and Labyrinth, in which he choreographed and juggled with crystal balls as the hands of David Bowie.

PABLO SÁINZ-VILLEGAS

Known as “a global ambassador of the Spanish guitar” (Billboard), Pablo Sáinz-Villegas brings his mastery of the classical guitar to BYU. Since his debut with the New York Philharmonic, Sáinz-Villegas has performed in more than 40 countries and won over 30 international awards. His virtuosity and commitment to developing new repertoire for Spanish classical guitar have made him a popular soloist throughout the world.

Conocido como "un embajador mundial de la guitarra española" (Billboard), Pablo Sáinz-Villegas aporta su dominio de la guitarra clásica a BYU. Desde su debut con la Filarmónica de Nueva York, Sáinz-Villegas se ha presentado en más de 40 países y ha ganado más de 30 premios internacionales. EIGHTH BLACKBIRD

A chamber ensemble at the cutting edge of modern classical music, Eighth Blackbird presents a concert of new music as part of the 40th anniversary celebration of BYU’s Barlow Endowment for Music Composition. Since the sextet’s founding in 1996, Eighth Blackbird has won four Grammy Awards and commissioned and premiered hundreds of works. This concert will feature 2020 Barlow Prize winner Bekah Simms’s commissioned piece, metamold, and Barlow Endowment Commission recipient Viet Cuong’s concerto Vital Sines with the BYU Wind Symphony.

UTAH SYMPHONY WITH TABEA ZIMMERMANN

Virtuoso violist Tabea Zimmermann joins the Utah Symphony for a special performance, featuring the U.S. premiere of Michael Jarrell’s Émergences-Résurgences, a piece written for Zimmermann and co-commissioned by the Utah Symphony.

Rising-star music director of Chicago Opera Theater Lidiya Yankovskaya makes her Utah Symphony debut with this concert.

Five-time Grammy Award winner Mark Lettieri brings his quartet to BYU for a concert of genre-defying, guitar-based instrumental music. Known for his work with the bands Snarky Puppy and the Fearless Flyers, Lettieri is an in-demand guitarist, composer, producer, and instructor who has recorded and performed in virtually every genre of popular music. He tours his award-winning original music around the globe with his quartet, the Mark Lettieri Group. During his time on campus, he will also work with students in BYU’s commercial music program to write and record an original single.

Guest artist Lara Downes (piano) joins faculty performers Diane Reich (voice), Scott Holden (piano), and Benjamin Nichols (saxophone) as well as several BYU ensembles in a diverse opening concert to the Barlow Endowment for Music Composition 40th Anniversary Celebration. The concert will include the new song cycle by 2020 Barlow Prize winner Christopher Trapani, the Barlowcommissioned and Ellington-inspired piece Long Time Coming by David Sanford, and a world premiere of a new piece by BYU faculty composer Kevin Anthony, written on the occasion of this celebration. The evening will also feature compositions by BYU faculty, including Christian Asplund’s Barlow-commissioned work for himself as viola soloist and Gamelan Bintang Wahyu, and a chamber ensemble piece by Stephen Jones.

MIVOS QUARTET

The Mivos Quartet, “one of America’s most daring and ferocious new-music ensembles” (The Chicago Reader), is devoted to performing works of contemporary composers and presenting diverse new music to international audiences. Since the quartet’s beginning in 2008, they have performed and closely collaborated with an ever-expanding group of international composers representing a wide aesthetic range of contemporary composition. In this Barlow-celebratory concert, Mivos will present the Barlow-commissioned piece Suspend Alight by composer Benjamin Sabey, a BYU alumnus currently serving as professor of composition at San Francisco State University, and a recent quartet by BYU faculty composer Neil Thornock. Other exciting new works for quartet drawn from their repertoire will round out the concert.

With music and sound design by BYU composer Steven Ricks and a libretto by BYU writer Stephen Tuttle, Baucis and Philemon tells the ancient story of an old couple transformed into trees on the bank of a lake. The lead roles are sung by soprano Madison Leonard and baritone Shea Owens, who also directs. The production features lighting design by Michael Kraczek, original set pieces by Brian Christensen, video projection by Brent Barson and David Habben, and an opening narration by Barta Heiner. The creation of Baucis and Philemon was supported by a development grant from the Center for Latter-day Saint Arts. The production may include flashing lights and video projection.
