2023

a season of change

This is a year of transition as we complete the new Music Building, featuring a one-of-a-kind concert hall in the Intermountain West and a new recital hall. We will also commence work on a new Arts Building in 2023.

We will have several different venues this year. The final performances in the Harris Fine Arts Center will occur this fall. The theatre season will perform in a large black box theatre at the north end of former Provo High on University Avenue (also known as BYU West Campus). This venue will allow us to do some innovative productions.

In January, performances will begin in the new Music Building located on the east side of campus just off of 900 East. Dance performances will continue to be held in the Richards Building and in the Marriott Center.

This will be a year of lasts and firsts. Please come and participate in spaces and venues for the last time and be a part of the new and transitioning performance spaces. Get your tickets early because seating will be limited in all of these venues as everyone will want to be a part of this memorable and celebratory year.

What an exciting year for the arts at BYU!

Actors from the London Stage: Romeo and Juliet

The passion of youthful love is never more vivid than in Romeo and Juliet, arguably Shakespeare’s most beloved and well-known work. Alternating between laughout-loud comedy, exuberant romance, and wrenching tragedy, Romeo and Juliet features Shakespeare’s greatest romantic pairing: a star-crossed duo whose passion careens into disaster. Ballet in Concert

Shayla Bott and Ashley Parov, artistic directors

In 2023, BYU Theatre Ballet will celebrate the 100th birthday of Gerald Arpino with an “All Arpino” night. One of the most influential choreographers of the 20th century and co-founder of the Joffrey Ballet, Arpino’s works are danced by professional companies throughout the world. With permission from the Gerald Arpino Foundation, it is our pleasure to feature three Arpino works in 2023: Birthday Variations, Viva Vivaldi, and Reflections

In Birthday Variations, the audience will be privileged to hear live piano accompaniment of the Giuseppe Verdi score by Amalie Simper. Reflections is a perfect representation of the Arpino style with challenging pas de deux work, virtuosic technique, and signature musicality. Theatre Ballet is especially excited to perform an excerpt of Viva Vivaldi for BYU audiences in preparation for their invited performance at the Gerald Arpino Centennial Celebration, which will take place in September 2023 in Chicago, IL. For more information about the Arpino Centennial, please visit arpinofoundation.org. We hope you can join us as we celebrate Gerald Arpino and his contributions to the dance world!

BYU Young Ambassadors: Thank You for the Music

Nathan Balser, artistic director

The Young Ambassadors’ new show, Thank You for the Music, is a celebration of the great musical hits of radio, stage, and screen. The BYU Young Ambassadors present the songs by which we live our lives. Whether humming along in our car or singing aloud in the shower, the songs of the radio, TV, movies, and the Broadway stage have made us, in part, who we are. Presented in a fast-paced and tender-hearted musical escapade fit for the whole family, Thank You for the Music mixes a touch of the classics including Queen, ABBA, Whitney Houston, Guys and Dolls, Wicked, and Newsies with a touch of the new by Ed Sheeran, BTS, Disney, and more.
