Welcome to the summer edition of the Bystander as we move into August. The school holidays are in full swing and hopefully the weather has improved from the mixed bag we experienced in July. I was fortunate to be at Headingley to witness England men’s dramatic test match victory over Australia. Inside, Sally contributes an analysis of the ashes for both the men’s and women’s teams. Elizabeth Fordham of ‘Making Me’ makes reference to the sunflower- and how we can all, like the seasonal favourite, be drawn to warmth of others. Beacon Wealth offer useful advice about funding long term care and Inn Farm gives some suggestions for outdoor spaces where our young children can play and learn safely during the summer months. Hazel’s flash fiction is entitled ‘Isn’t it terrible!’ which I can assure you is quite the opposite and look out for Penny’s latest delve into the family records which includes singing on Broadway!
As ever we have lots more besides. Enjoy the rest of summer everyone.

Elite Swimming Academy
Elite Swimming Academy is a fast track private swim school that teaches both children and adults how to swim throughout Cambridgeshire.
Founded by Channel Swimmer Ed Williams (who recently swam between Ireland and Scotland unaided, and has also swam the English Channel and Gibraltar Strait), the company has grown organically over the past decade to a team of 30 highly skilled coaches teaching 1500 children every week how to swim.
Our ethos is to provide high quality private children’s swimming lessons in warm private, luxury swimming pools. This combination generates very fast results and means we can get children swimming independently from the age of just 3 years old.
We teach our lessons across 17 unique swimming pools in Cambridgeshire, ranging from several central Cambridge Colleges and schools, through to our own custom built facilities throughout the county. We have a great team of inspirational swimming teachers as well as a dedicated customer service team meaning that our customers experience a very high level of service at every step of the way.
We provide weekly swimming classes with no more than three swimmers to a class, and week-long intensive swimming courses in every school holiday. We are committed to being available, reactive and attentive to our customers’ needs every step of the way to give them a 5 star level of service.

LOCAL MEMORIES: By
Young Miss Kirkham on Broadway
Penny
All researchers of Thomas Bulman Kirkham (Lucy’s father) and his 19 children conclude that his 15th child – Lucy Kirkham – emigrates to America on board ‘The Gertrude’, arriving on 4th February 1848, presumably following her older brother, Arthur Anderson Kirkham (13th child). It is thought that Arthur was probably given his middle name in honour of his famous uncle and aunt, George and Lucy Anderson, respectively director of music and pianist to Queen Victoria. Having such an unusual middle name makes family research so much easier and we can follow Arthur’s emigration to America with his wife and two children, the death of his wife soon after their arrival and his remarriage and birth of seven further children with his new wife. Arthur made the most of opportunities in his new country, continuing his trade as an upholsterer, moving to a good address in Manhattan with a live-in servant. Arthur died in 1889 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, where some of his famous (deceased) neighbours include, Irving Berlin and Miles Davis.
However, it has not been possible to locate Miss Kirkham at any of Arthur’s well documented addresses over the years, so the presumption that Lucy had followed her brother to America is perhaps not correct. Me and Wayne, my cousin in Australia, simply could not accept that Lucy Kirkham had just landed on the quayside in New York, all be it that this had happened 175 years ago, and nothing was ever heard of her again. We even researched the young lady whose name was next to Lucy Kirkham’s on the passenger list, but there was no connection.
You remember from the last story that Lucy may (or may not) have been pregnant, so potentially we could have been looking for a record of the birth of a child. However, I felt all along that this was a ruse, cooked up by her mother, to extract more financial damages from my three times great grandfather, but this was all speculation and was not getting us any closer to finding out what happened next to Miss Kirkham.
Perhaps, I thought, a trip to the Royal College of Music, might give some clues. Miss Kirkham was a singer of some repute in the Sacred Harmonic Society and their records are held at the RCM. Train ticket booked, new phone-app railway station carparking navigated with only a minor nervous breakdown! A couple of hours in the Royal College of Music library, with a soloist singing in one room nearby and a trumpet voluntary going on in another – what could get better than this! The records of the Sacred Harmonic Society for 1843 – 1848 were placed in front of me and I scoured them for mention of Miss Kirkham, but I could not find her. Oh dear! Had all record of her been expunged, due to her disgrace? The other girls, whose names were familiar to me from all the newspaper articles, were there and I was just about to give up - when - “We then come to the other movement, the trio of angels, while Elijah sleeps under the juniper tree, ‘Lift thine eyes’ which was sung by Miss Kirkham, Miss Duval and Miss Dolby without accompaniment…..It was most perfectly executed by the three ladies and on their account, no less than on its own, most rapturously encored. Miss Kirkham sang with more confidence and better intonation. This

young lady has a very clear and telling voice and by cultivating a good style, will become a valuable acquisition to our list of English sopranos”. She was there! Lucy did exist –but, the same as I had found from the newspaper archives, in mid-1847 she disappears, no explanation, she had gone. None the less, a lovely day in London, I had found Lucy Kirkham’s name in print, at possibly the most famous music academy in the world. Lunch with a glass of wine followed and some shopping after, finished off a memorable day; but in terms of finding Lucy Kirkham – back to the drawing board.
Then, out of the blue, came a letter from America, or rather today’s equivalent, an email! I had thought of contacting the correspondent, Richard Banks, a distant cousin, who bizarrely had found me, six years ago, from a DNA test Dad had done back in 2006 (at my instigation) for a guy in America called Ray Banks, who was researching the ‘Banks name’ worldwide. At the time there was great excitement as the results showed that this was a new strain of Banks, never seen before! They had been living in Hail Weston, Huntingdonshire for 500 years and Dad was part of the group who had never moved more than a few miles away all their lives, whereas others scattered to the winds and this Richard Banks’ ancestors had made it across the pond, and he had proved a very close match to Dad. Sadly, at the time of the original contact in 2017, we had lost Dad only two months earlier and Richard was disappointed at not to be able to speak to his new-found cousin. However the two of us remained in contact, emailing every few months or so. I had wondered whether to contact this Richard and ask him if he could help try and find out what had happened to Miss Kirkham after she arrived in New York on 4th February 1848. But before I could even begin to compose an email – one popped up in my inbox from Richard, enquiring after my health and telling me that he had recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer. He was going through a whole barrage of treatment but was trying to keep busy with his family tree research.
‘In for a penny’, nothing ventured, nothing gained etc. – I took the plunge and asked Richard if he could help me with this ‘brick wall’. I gave Richard a potted history of Charles William Kendall and the elopement with the famous singer, Miss Lucy Kirkham, and her banishment to America. I told him that she may, or may not have been pregnant, which I know does not sound very helpful, but might open different areas of research. Richard was very excited and said that this was exactly what he needed, to take his mind off his treatment, a juicy research story to get his teeth into.
A few days later – a copy of a marriage register with a Lucy Kirkham marrying a William Abraham Moore at an Episcopal Church in New York on 24th February 1848 – just 20 days after ‘her’ arrival in New York. Wayne in Australia had already found this record some months earlier and had persuaded me that this was not ‘our Lucy’ – but next came two Broadway theatre bills with a Miss Lucy Moore taking leading parts in operettas at the Lyceum Theatre Broadway.
My goodness – have we hit the jackpot again with Lucy – Yes Yes Yes – we find proof that it is her!
More next time.

The Ashes are alive and back in Blighty! Or are they?
As I write this, both the men’s and women’s Ashes contests are finely poised. England men are currently 2-1 down to Australia’s men and the women’s series is level at 2 apiece, after England were triumphant in the first ODI match. Therefore, reader, I ask you to ‘delete’ the below as applicable.
Last year, the new “BazBall” was heralded as the breath of fresh air the men’s cricket side needed. This year, it’s proven the difference as Brendan McCullum and Ben Stokes’ men battled back from 2-0 down to claim victory over an Australian side who’d been destined to take the series 5-0. Or so Glenn McGrath thought. Stuart Broad delighted England fans by seeing off David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne in consecutive balls and more was yet to come. The return of the devastatingly fast Mark Wood, and some patient but impressive batting from Harry Brook proved the difference as the series fightback finally began in earnest at Headingley. England men’s adopting BazBall can now truly be heralded a success. Naysayers can be silenced. The Barmy Army sounds a victory call and Ben Stokes banners are flown above cricket stadia for the rest of summer. Same again next time? We can’t wait.
England’s decision to declare on 393-8 at the close of Day 1 of the first Test match at Edgbaston in June proved costly as Australia forged ahead through the capable batting of Usman Khawaja (141 and 65) and unforgiving bowling of Pat Cummins (4-63). The lack of discipline in England’s bowlers was evident, costly and excruciating as the extras total ramped up to 44 over the two innings at Edgbaston and 74 at Lord’s. It’s all well and good batting like their places depend on it but the truth of the matter is that without those extras, England would have been well on top. It’s disheartening to say the least and proves one thing: the casual approach to this series against Australia was ultimately England’s downfall as the light provided by BazBall flickered and died, the risks taken with the bat failed to pay off, and chances missed were rued. Australia gave England a sorely needed masterclass in taking catches and a headache or two in relation to choice of wicket-keeper. Ben Foakes has proven form against tough Australian sides going back to 2017-18 but persisting with Jonny Bairstow, who averages below 30 with the bat, may need to be re-examined. BazBall took off last year against New Zealand and India but due to CazBall (coined by Aussie commentator Glenn McGrath) against Australia spluttered back down to the runway in a heap with the visitors tasting victory once more. Lee’s Gardening Corner
It is the holiday season and the main garden is probably having a bit of a rest, before autumn kicks in. Depending rain fall some gardens may be bone dry, if so water any annual plants that were planted earlier this year, and make sure pots never go dry, also feed once a week and that will help the colour last.
Grass cutting carries on as normal, and this is a perfect time to redo any grass seeding as the morning dew is great for germination. Hedges and topiary can be clipped now, and continue to deadhead flowers for a longer season. Some plants that are looking good in August are the annuals Marigolds, Cosmos and Geraniums. Perennials Astrantia and Hemerocallis also look colourful. The Buddleia's are providing food for bees and butterflies.
The veg garden should be overflowing with produce now, keep picking beans of all kinds, cucumbers and courgettes. Tomatoes should be just about ripe now, keep feeding with a general fertiliser once a week. Make sure they all get plenty of water. Now is the time to start getting new strawberry plants from the runners of the old ones, pop the runner in a pot of compost and wait till it is growing stronger before cutting the stem to the old plant.
So still a full and busy month even if it is holiday season - have fun in the sun.

Isn’t it Terrible!
Tomorrow, Sally and her husband Mike were set to make their way to Wales for a couple of days to climb Pen Y Fan – the highest peak in the Brecon Beacons. That was tomorrow. Tonight, they were sat in the kitchen of Mike’s mother’s bungalow, checking all was ok there before they left.
Mike and his mother were, as usual, deep in conversation about people Sally had never even heard of, and Sally’s mind was wandering onto everything she had left to do. It was now 7.30pm. They were planning to leave at 9.00am, and not a single thing had yet been packed.
Suddenly, a comment addressed to Sally by her mother-in-law brought her sharply out of her ponderings: ‘I said……isn’t it terrible?’ What is?’ Sally asked. As soon as the words left her lips, Sally knew she would regret them, because in her mother-in-law’s world, so many things were terrible – the weather, the cost of everything, the state of the countryside, how uncaring people are ……….
In the car on the way home, Sally felt drained and low. Visits to her mother-in-law often left her feeling that way. Her negativity seemed to seep into Sally’s being, until she actually started to find herself thinking that perhaps her mother-in-law was right, and everything was terrible.
The journey the next day was a good one, with a couple of nice breaks. They settled into their B and B, and after a lovely evening meal they went to bed early to get a good sleep before their climb. The following morning, the sun streamed in through the bedroom window – it was going to be a hot one! After a good breakfast, Mike and Sally drove to the foot of Pen Y Fan and started walking.
Sally found the climb challenging. The path was fairly good, but it was three hours of walking uphill in heat, and more than once Sally wondered if she would make it to the summit. Yet make it she did! As well as the huge sense of achievement the climb brought, the views from the summit were totally amazing. Sally and Mike took photos, and Sally spent time reading the messages left on stones in a circle.
At that moment, standing on top of the world, Sally knew for sure that her mother-inlaw was wrong – it isn’t all terrible at all.
The weather was beautiful. The complete experience had cost nothing. The views of the surrounding countryside were indescribably beautiful. And as for uncaring people ……everyone Sally and Mike had met on their climb had smiled at them and given words of encouragement. The messages on the stones at the summit were messages of love, of awe and of pride.
Sometimes, Sally thought, we have to learn to hold onto the positives in life, because there is so much beauty in this world, so many experiences to be enjoyed and so much to be grateful for.

CARE FEES PLANNING
BY TONY LARKINS
well find themselves leaving their home and moving in with their child Which, probably may not be the circumstances that either party would have chosen to happen.
It has been reported that one in seven people are expected to need care. Anyone involved in the funding of long-term care will know just how expensive it is.
The Office of National Statistics (ONS) now states that women need 2.9 years of care and men 2.2 years. This means that the cost could be anywhere from around £150k to £300k on average. Indeed, some could cost less, but some could also cost more.
The majority of the population don’t appear to have made provisions for care fees instead of relying on their home to cover the costs… Private and state pensions will help towards this, but these are often relied on by the partner who may
The Government was due to bring in a cap for costs but has so far failed to do so. Thus, it remains that an individual needs total assets of less than £23,250 (including your home) before they can be fully funded by the local authority.
Sorting assets for care payment typically rests with the person holding power of attorney Though, it is not unheard of for children to assist with this. At Beacon, we have several highly qualified experts who specialise in this area that can assist you.
Our planning not only involves the best way of providing the
provisions for funding care costs, but it will also find the best options for other things such as avoiding Inheritance Tax (IHT).
Usually, by the time people require care the seven-year rule for gifting is far too late, and even the two-year rule can sometimes be touch and go. So, we strive to ensure the best possible options for your situation.
If you have concerns about funding your care or the care of a loved one, I would suggest that you start planning sooner rather than later.

Feet-On-The-Ground House Hunting
Paul Kinally of Peter Lane & Partners looks at a property market sector that offers buyers bags of often overlooked potential.
Let’s speak up in favour of the bungalow. Those who live in these stairless homes understand what many others do not; that life is beautiful in a bungalow. Single-storey dwelling is easy and convenient, and in essence, is like living in a superb apartment but with huge benefits - no one above and below you and your own front door and parking area. Plus, as bungalows can occupy a larger footprint than storied houses and often enjoy wide plots, there is usually a sizeable garden to use as a sophisticated outdoor room for relaxing and entertaining.
Bungalows are not just for the older generation; they can often be easily altered to provide an effective and modern open-plan style of living for all age groups, including families.
Many house buyers are just that – buyers of houses. Most don’t think to add bungalows to their search. They should, as even the humblest bungalow can often offer more lifestyle options than one might think.
Of course, subject to planning permission, one could always add another floor and double the living space or, in the case of some poorly constructed interwar bungalows built on great plots in wonderful locations, one could knock the place down and start again. Then there are the thousands of bungalows built in seaside towns when those of pensionable age wanted little more from life than to retire to the coast. Some retirees still do, but their go-to bungalow option is now starting to register with a wider group of buyers.
We are not just house experts; we are bungalow experts too. Please call us to discover the range and advantages of bungalow living.
If you are thinking of moving and would like to discuss any aspect of the process, Paul can be contacted at the Kimbolton Office on 01480 860400 or paul.kinally@peterlane.co.uk

Bedfordshire Festival of Autumn Walks
Bedfordshire Ramblers are delighted to announce the first Bedfordshire Festival of Autumn Walks. The Festival, offering over 30 walks, will run over a 9 day period between the 9th and 17th Sept 2023.
There is a plethora of walks on offer to suit all over the period - long walks, short walks, well-being and interest walks. Walks are scheduled in the mornings and afternoons in addition to all day walks. Most of the walks do not require booking. Walks take place over the length and breadth of Bedfordshire – join us for one (or more) walks and explore our beautiful little county on foot.
The festival is being run with the cooperation of the four groups that make up Bedfordshire, namely Leighton Buzzard, North Beds, Lea and Icknield (Luton) and Ivel Valley Walkers.

I have a writing noticeboard in my office. It’s covered in all manner of reminders, lists and inspirational stuff along with lovely cards filled with kind words. Pinned in among all this is a Post-it note which is curled at the edges and covered in my scruffy handwriting. It is a quote from Hugh Howey. Hugh is an independent author and one of the first major success stories in self-publishing with a book called Wool. I digress. The quote is, “Stop reading what you’re writing as you write it. See the world in your head. Visualise it. Smell it. Hear it. Sprinkle in details from the periphery of your character’s senses. Make the world real. Then just tell it as naturally as you can.” You can add to that list touch and taste to be complete and you get the idea. If you want your characters to become properly rounded, you need to put them in the setting you have created, then get them to fully experience it. Don’t overdo it though. Using all five senses in one scene would become tedious to read, so instead just drop in the occasional added detail to enrich what your character is doing.
No one ever truly knows what goes on inside a marriage, apart from those in it. So, while Chase and Delilah Reddick appear to the outside world to have it all, there are deep cracks in their relationship that run right back to when they first got together.
Delilah is blessed with a best friend, Carmen, who patches her up and urges her to leave Chase. But Delilah won’t leave their fourteen-year-old son Jackson behind, and knows Chase will hunt her down if she takes him. But then Jackson displays some of his father’s behaviour and Delilah realises something has to change.
Just when Delilah appears to be trying to take control, something truly horrific happens. No spoilers here. This surprises the reader and completely derails Delilah for months. Meanwhile, each day that passes is a day closer to when she knows Chase will eventually kill her.
Hush, Delilah is the first book by Angie Gallion that I have read, and I loved it. It’s extremely well written, and the plot is tight. I wondered how, or indeed if (because I felt this writer could go in any direction) Delilah would manage to do what she needed to. However, I thoroughly enjoyed how the story unfolded and I found the ending immensely satisfying.
Georgia Rose is my pen name and the name I use for everything connected to my writing. You can find me at georgia@georgiarosebooks.com or www.georgiarosebooks.com.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF JONATHAN BELBIN -----HEADMASTER OF KIMBOLTON SCHOOL-----
I get out of bed, every day, at 5.50 in the morning and go for a ride around the School grounds, after which I take the family dog—Skye, a Welsh Border Collie for a walk. Then it’s the turn of our puppy, Ted who goes for a run around the grounds too, Ted being a puppy does ‘puppy things’, a bit like some of the younger pupils!
After I, Skye and Ted have been fully exercised it’s a short cycle ride to Budgens to collect my copy of the Times, sometimes, if the delivery is late, I call in on the way into school. My breakfast is pretty much the same every day: porridge, yogurt, nuts and grapes; whilst breakfasting I usually listen to ‘Duo Lingo’ French----we have a house in France.
After breakfast I cycle to my office ready for 8 o clock, then the day begins for real!
As with most people in any job, it’s the dreaded emails first, then I don my coat and go out to greet the parents and pupils as they arrive to start their day, this takes some 20 minutes as I love talking to parents and pupils at the beginning of the day in case anything is on their minds. I always ensure that I’m visible to parents, pupils and staff members, it’s the key to being a Headmaster.
From 8.50 I’m busy seeing anyone who wants to see me, could be staff matters, lesson programming, in fact anything at all that I am required to be consulted or to give advice on.
From 9.30 I am likely to be meeting prospective pupils and their parents-----when I go out of my office to meet and greet the parents and pupils, I give my fullest attention to the prospective pupils, to put them at ease in what might seem to them to be a daunting situation; one of the pupils gives them the tour of the School as this really helps relax everyone and is obviously excellent experience for the pupil giving the tour-----any pupil who wants to can give these tours.
From 10 o clock, more emails and correspondence: in this my wonderful P.A. Jane is absolutely key, like all good P.A.s she could probably do my job herself!
10.40 sees the start of School Assembly, 800 pupils with a rotation of a year group sitting at the front, I’ve no idea what they do at the back! This starts with the School Director of Music playing the organ to settle everyone down and then I sweep in with my full gown on, and then invite the pupils to be seated. The service is variously religious and secular, thus catering for all beliefs. During this assembly, certificates and medals can be presented and any special news can be communicated.
11.05, sigh of relief: back in my office with a cappuccino! At this time, staff can call in unappointed to discuss anything they need to, School trips etc.
Academically, I teach 3 lessons every week, mainly history which is my favourite subject. I was a History Master having taken it for my degree at Bristol University. Prior to Kimbolton, I was Head of History at Kelly College Dartmoor and Monmouth School, Wales. After that, I was Deputy Head at Kent College for 6 years and then I arrived at Kimbolton in 2002.

As part of my duties, I have appraisal interviews with all members of staff, mostly listening and giving future career advice. There are 100 members of the teaching staff, that’s 25 minutes 3 times each week, I need to know my staff!
My lunch time is 12.45 for 20 minutes!
Between 13.10 and 14.10, I’m available for pupils to visit me to discuss any matters that they are concerned about.
In the afternoon, it’s my time to observe a lesson, sending positive notes to the teacher concerned later. I love to watch sports matches and games. I also teach PSHE: Personal, Social & Health Education and see all of the 1st and 5th Form pupils over the course of the year, encouraging ‘Assertiveness, Self-Esteem and Anti-Bullying’.
Later in the afternoon, it’s more emails, again!, various meetings: heads of departments etc. By 5.30 the day has ended, apart from concerts, talks, plays which begin around 7 o clock, by then I’ve been home and reinforced with a light tea, cheese and biscuits, literally!
You’re thinking, and you’re right, not much time for anything else: I usually have 3 books (history books, sporting books, novels or a biography---currently, Chips Channon’s diaries ) on the go, I read the Times every day. I’m in bed by 10 p.m., read for a while with ‘lights out’ at 10.30.
Favourites:
Film, Sixth Sense
Pop music, Kate Bush
Classical, Ma Vlast by Bedrich Smetana
I collect Wisdens and the most famous person I’ve ever met, excluding Sir John Major is Mike Brearley.
My wife, Heather, who used to teach at the Prep School is into Agility Training for dogs, we work very much together as a team and Heather always supports me on the many social and formal functions that I attend.
Jonathan and Heather have 3 children:
Natalie who is a designer
James who teaches at Kimbolton School
Danni who is a lawyer.
Jonathan and Heather’s plan is to spend more time in their house in S.W. France as well as being based at Canterbury where they have a house.
On being pressed: ‘The plan is that there isn’t a plan’!
Jonathan’s sign off comment:
‘Only with the support of my wife Heather, could I have done what I’ve done’

Canine Corner - Stereotypic Behaviour in Dogs
A behaviour that is performed repetitively and that has no obvious goal or function is referred to as a stereotypic behaviour. The terms ‘Abnormal Repetitive Behaviour’ or (in dogs) ‘Canine Compulsive Disorder’ are also used. This condition is broadly similar to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in humans.
Stereotypic and compulsive behaviour can take many forms and have many different causes. Often, the behaviour is a coping mechanism for a dog who is stressed or frustrated. Common stereotypic behaviours in dogs include tail chasing, circling, shadow or light chasing, overgrooming, paw licking or self-mutilation, swallowing inedible objects such as stones and socks (also known as Pica), floor licking, and pacing. Occasionally, dogs may show self-directed aggression and may bite their own legs or tail. Compulsive water drinking is also sometimes seen. When a dog displays one of these behaviours, a collaboration between its owner, vet and behaviourist is usually required as these cases can be quite complex. Getting to the bottom of what is causing the stereotypic behaviour is the goal, but this can be tricky in some cases. Potential causes of stereotypic or compulsive behaviours include:
• Medical problems, including pain
• Neurological problems
• Stress or anxiety
• Frustration
• Living in an inadequate environment with a lack of mental stimulation
• Lack of exercise
• Attention seeking
Some breeds of dog are certainly more prone to showing stereotypic behaviours, these include German Shepherds, Dobermanns, English Bull Terriers and Border Collies. However, dogs of any breed can be affected. Although dogs can be born with a genetic tendency to show stereotypic behaviour (another good reason to meet your puppy’s parents!), there are things you can do to reduce the chance of the behaviour developing. Ensure your dog is healthy and pain-free, keep stress to a minimum and ensure they have adequate exercise, attention and mental stimulation.
Stereotypic behaviours often show up during puppyhood and adolescence, so if you notice any abnormal behaviour in your young dog, speak to your vet as soon as you can. If your older dog starts behaving oddly, don’t ignore it- abnormal behaviour can be a sign of an underlying health issue, so the sooner this is treated, the better.
If your dog is already showing stereotypic behaviour, don’t allow them to engage in the behaviour for long periods. Never punish them as the increased stress could make the problem worse. Distract them if necessary, by engaging them in a different activity such as training, scent work or a game. Don’t encourage the behaviour and never use laser pens, mirror reflections or torches to play with your dog- what starts as an innocent game can quickly develop into a compulsive behaviour. Many dogs who show stereotypic or compulsive behaviour improve with behaviour therapy, sometimes combined with medication from their vet.
