Mike McSwain Mike McSwain and Larrson McSwain presented “Along for the Ride,” an exhibit of paintings, photos, sketchbooks, drawings, cut-outs, collages, conversation and billboards sharing the beauty they found on the road. What started off as a detour to take a picture of the beautiful bluebonnets, on the side of the road in Texas became a journey of finding beauty in the everyday world we live. The McSwains began noticing the artistry of nature and structures along their trip, touring Texas, Colorado, and even New York, where Larrson resides. The Father-Son duo began to notice the allure of their hometown Shreveport and created 150 plus pieces of art, inspired by their time together on the road. Blush Pink and Nude Tones Blush pink and nude tones have been huge on the runways; some fashion heavy hitters are even calling blush the “new neutral.”

Lace Apparel Whether it’s a full lace top or lace accents, this soft feminine look is a great staple in your wardrobe. Shoulder Accents Whether it is a ruffle shoulder cut out or a little sparkle, any form of detailing on the shoulder is huge. Bangs are a huge trend being carried over from the past two seasons. Consult your hair stylist to choose the best length to compliment your face shape.

Braids Whether wearing a full braid or just a few accent braids, this trend will keep your hair style seasonably cute no matter the time of year. Hair Accessories such as headbands, clips and combs are a quick and easy way to add something to your look.

Metallics on the eyes and lips are back in full force in the world of beauty and fashion.

Berries for the Lips Show your lips some love with rich berry colors. Trendy bold lips look great in person and on that Zoom business meeting too! Pastels from lash line into crease will call attention to your eyes. That Glow Create a radiant complexion by choosing winter makeup with a dewy glow rather than a matte finish. Fluffy Brows The 1990s gave us the over-tweezed brow, followed later by Instagram’s favorite “blocky” brows. Now, fluffy natural looking brows are on point.

Textured Cut Shaggy cuts, curtain bangs and lots of layers are fabulous trendy hair cut options, which look great at various lengths, depending on your style.

Bobbed Hair Cut The timeless and classic bob is sprouting up. A bob cut can be worn in various lengths; just make sure the length you choose is fitting for your facial features.

enton, LA. Spanning over eight acres, the home of Jennifer Maxwell-Lebleu and Jason Lebleu rests on a cleared patch of land dotted with hardwoods. Seclusion is provided from neighboring homes through a thicket of massive mature longleaf pines, all which surround the property on all sides. It’s a place where the openness of the landscape and relaxed pace help create an allure that is matched only by its own internal comfort—a feeling of both luxury and southern charm.

Operating from a blank canvas, Jennifer, along with her husband Jason, chose the site because they wanted a home that nestled in with the tress and was built into the land. As a couple who enjoys hosting their family and friends, they wanted a large enough space to comfortably

welcome and accommodate their guests. Though sleek and elegant, “the home was built for us as we age, Jennifer admits, “so comfort was an essential must.” Spending years designing the home themselves, the couple finally turned to Robbie Jackson of Jackson Home Builders, a Bossier City-based custom home builder, to help finalize their vision. “Specializing in residential projects with a personalized approach to livable luxury, Robbie was able to find the best long-term solution for most of our needs—both practically as well as aesthetically—to achieve our design goals.” In addition to attaining an “old” look with new construction, Jennifer and Jason were able to strike the right balance of proportion and perspective for their 3,400-square-foot home—something strong enough to stand as a testament to the way they wanted to live their lives. “It’s a sizeable structure,” Jennifer explained, “but the inside really does not feel like a large house.” “We designed the house and positioned the windows so that every room has a view in at least two directions—if not three—of the natural, panoramic surroundings. A two-point perspective view, or a corner view, where you are looking in two or more directions is so much more dynamic than a stationary one-point view,” she continued. “Whether it’s at a corner, or looking through the house into another room’s windows and to the outside, we wanted always to be seeing through and out to nature.” At every turn, strong horizontal and vertical alignments and subtle details are balanced with angles and curves. Radius arches, moldings, and trim create an elegant softness throughout the home. Not surprisingly, these details were brought forward with intention. Architectural details support the home’s sense of longevity and scale, as if they were part of an original structure that has expanded through the decades. Most notably, Jennifer adds, “Our style breaks the symmetry, adding definition and character.” Crystal chandeliers adorn each room for glamour. The sense of light was a key consideration in the home’s design, hence the high ceilings, transoms above SBMAG.NET

the doors and windows—an eye-catching focal point—allowing in an abundance of natural light. Jason, who did much of the interior construction himself—from painting to carpentry to laying the custom tile no one wanted to install—was able to employ a variety of sizes, configurations and product options to accomplish the intended vision. “The house, from the crown moldings, door and window casings, baseboards, windows, transoms and hardware, it’s all very subtle, but necessary,” states Jennifer. “I like the purity of it all with all the unique style and details.”

all decorated in garlands, baubles, and fifteen flocked Christmas trees, perfectly placed throughout the house. “I’ve adorned every little nook and cranny when it comes to Christmas,” admits Jennifer. “I try to make it as whimsical as possible.”

The completed project successfully blends past and present to create a timeless home with traditional and modern details. The residence establishes roots with the land and captures views of its surrounding beauty. “With the open floor plan, you really feel like you are living in and among the trees,” Jennifer concludes. Not to mention, the home is really decked out for the holidays. Step inside and see how she fully embraces her style and creates a shimmering home trimmed in her personal flair.

As the owner of Mama Noel Design—a specialty boutique business that specializes in creating “recipes” for Christmas decorating—Jennifer tackles multiple spaces inside and outside the house with a “no holds barred” mindset, layering holiday magic all over while maintaining the home’s distinct identity. “I think Christmas sings in a traditional home,” she says. “This house absolutely lends itself to be decked out for Christmas.” By accentuating her personal style, Jennifer is able to create a welcoming spot for her family and friends to enjoy throughout the season. Her color palette varies, adding in textures and sweet details that give the home a magical touch. “I wanted to bring in pops of color that aren’t traditional Christmas colors and blend them with traditional Christmas décor,” she notes. “Flocked trees, furs, and textures provide a different look.”

Dreamy Holiday Décor When it comes to Christmas décor, anything and everything is on the table, literally, when it comes to the holidays—from mantles to countertops to tables galore—

Metallics further elevate the spaces—from the living room to the kitchen to the master bedroom. Careful to keep the décor from becoming gaudy, Jennifer uses both gold and silver just often enough that it acts as a neutral tone, but

not so repeatedly that it overwhelms. In the living room, the designer’s foundation is the classic combination of white and grey; the addition of gold and silver accents results in a look that is luxurious yet approachable. There is also a casual quality to it, she notices. “There’s a story told in my decorations, especially in my Christmas trees. I love doing really big, wild trees, and decorate them to be magical and fun. I think trees should be sentimental.” With dazzling arrays of lights and decorations, it’s no question that the Christmas trees are the statement piece of any room—they shimmer in the foyer, the master bedroom, the kitchen and, of course, the living room. They brighten the ‘dirty kitchen,’ pantry and dining room, where mini faux saplings glisten in anticipation of Santa’s arrival. Even the dogs have a tree in the laundry room. Bejeweled Elegance Though Jennifer’s Christmas trees have similar natural elements in their “recipe,” each tree varies in color pal-

ette from room-to-room. “I stay pretty neutral with grays and whites in my home,” says Jennifer. This allows her to have a red and green tree palette in one room and a gold and pastel palette in another. The tree in the living room is filled with a combination of ornaments, both large and small, and a giant star tops it off. Sprinklings of light blue teardrops and perfectly placed flowers add texture and charm to nearly every

bough. “It’s like a giant flower arrangement,” Jennifer says of the living room’s signature piece. And like flower bouquets, the trees change depending on the extra pieces added. “I like to balance the interest with different heights that change from room-to-room. Even changing the ribbon can affect the feel of a tree.” Additionally, the living room’s tree has twinkling lights, accent ornaments, and gold dusted magnolia leaves and exudes its own flavor and identity. “My goal with the living room’s tree was to make it look like a beautiful piece of jewelry through extensive layering with mostly gold and silver holiday decorations—which complement the decorations on the mantle. The trick is varying the different sizes, shapes and textures of the ornaments. The result is controlled chaos and dense shimmer,” adds Jennifer. Elsewhere in the house, Jennifer’s approach to decor relies on natural materials and greenery, but with no less an eye for intricate detail. In the kitchen—with its massive island—the decorations are more relaxed and, when viewed close up, reveals a plethora of goodies. This is the overall theme of her designs—it becomes all about those tucked-in, hidden details. “If I want a bit of glamour, which I love, I just drop in touches of silver and gold,” she says. “Against a neutral background, their shine makes any room feel special.”

Indoor and Outdoor Décor Another key component to Jennifer’s look is her use of natural elements in her holiday setup. There is an English woodland feel—with red berries, evergreen, branches and pinecones without the glitter. Of course, there are the nutcrackers, adding to the overall effect. Overall, by accentuating her personal style at the holidays, Jennifer is able to create a welcoming spot for anyone to enjoy during the holidays. “I love my work and love playing with textures and colors, but I want home to be about spending time with my family,” she says. “Everything at my home is both casual and spontaneous.” Family Time Jennifer says everyone wanting a similar look should try to keep things simple. “I like using textures and different layers.” Having a neutral background, she says, is a great way to save on holiday splendor. Adding pops of color and switching things in and out can be done quite easily with any aesthetic. Try to ready your home well in advance, she suggests. That way, you will have time to play around with texture and color. If you decorate your tree like you would arrange a bouquet of flowers, you will then have time to achieve the perfect Christmas arrangement, making sure the various heights are dynamic and balanced. “Use recipes and decorations that you love, but don’t overthink your holiday entertaining.”

Make the Tree(s) Count. Lots of lights and lots of layering make for a perfect tree. Vary texture, size and shape of the ornaments. Be bold.

ɖ

Vary the Theme. Deck out each space in keeping with key décor in each room. For example, a dining room should have a different vibe than a kitchen. Be equally committed to both.

ɖ

Steal Stuff from Your Yard. Depending on where you live, you may have an abundance of Christmas décor right outside your door. “Go to the woods and gather up natural elements, like dried flowers and branches,” says Jennifer.

ɖ

Elevate What You Already Have. Instead of hitting the stores right away, see what you can do to dress up your current décor pieces. Adding small accents like candles, wreaths and bottlebrush trees will be a less time-consuming and more cost-effective way to decorate for Christmas than buying all new festive décor.

After moving into the Branch Manager position, the ideas, visions, and goals I had for this company started flowing. I knew where I wanted to take the branch and I knew the sacrifice that would come along with making it all happen. To be successful in a very cutthroat industry you have to constantly create new relationships while maintaining and being attentive to your existing ones. To be able to implement the desires and goals that I have for Thrive Mortgage, I had to surround myself with an epic team of people that have the same passion as I do. I started with adding my longtime friend of 15 years to the team, Jill McCoy… together we have accomplished more than I had ever envisioned Thank you Shreveport/Bossier for voting for us the #1 in such a short amount mortgage company for 2021, we are so very appreciative of you! of time. toGIVE is to Receive

T

BY ADAM BAILEY

hink the whole holiday gift giving thing is completely overdone and a waste of time and money? Think again. Studies show that a little generosity can actually benefit your wellbeing. Need proof? Here are some benefits.

Giving Makes You Feel Happy. Seeing the pure joy on the faces of someone you’ve just helped or given a gift brings you immediate joy as well, right? Right. According to Psychology Today, humans can enjoy something called the “helper’s high,” an instant sense of fulfillment and comfort when you see someone happy with an action you’ve performed. The helper’s high is actually your body’s release of the chemical dopamine, a feel-good neurotransmitter. Your body is chemically telling itself to feel happy. Giving is Good for Your Health. Giving back is obviously a heart-warming affair but it could also do a whole lot more for your heart than warm it. Studies show that giving helps lower your blood pressure and levels of anxiety—both major contributors to heart disease. There’s even research suggesting that giving can help givers, especially older adults, sleep more soundly. Feeling a little blue? Go out and make someone else’s day, and sleep better at night. Literally! Giving Enhances Your Social Network and Improves Relationships. By nature, humans are social creatures, so through giving, you’re building better social connections and contributing to your role in society—leading to increased confidence and a positive self-image and decreased negative emotions. For example, when you volunteer or give monetarily, you become part of a caring, united and cohesive group. By becoming part of this community, you will be afforded numerous chances to meet new people and to make new friends, where you will have ample opportunity to demonstrate that you care about others and value those relationships. In so doing, others will reciprocate by drawing closer to you. This dynamic interaction will not only make a difference in someone else’s life, but it will also improve your social support and strengthen your network—thus giving you a greater feeling of belonging to something greater than yourself.

Giving Evokes a Sense of Empathy and Gratitude. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another—and it is a particularly valuable emotion and a concrete benefit of charitable giving. Specifically, when you see others in need, you literally can feel their pain.

30

DECEMBER 2021

| SBMAG.NET

This emotion creates an internal distress, which signals you to take action—most often in the forms of providing assistance or monetary support. In so doing, by helping others you relieve some of the distress that we are experiencing and that makes us feel better. In this glorious cycle of demonstrating empathy and experiencing gratitude, you encounter the very best benefits that charitable giving has to offer. Giving Increases Your Sense of Self-Worth. Adolescents in particular can benefit from giving—it helps them develop a sense of self-worth and community. Those that engage in self-focused behavior rather than social give-back are generally unsuccessful in their quest for happiness and meaning.

hundreds of people, some of whom they do not know or have never met. So whether you buy gifts, volunteer your time, or donate money to charity this holiday season, your giving is much more than just a year-end chore. It may help you build stronger social connections and even jumpstart a cascade of generosity through the community. And don’t be surprised if you find yourself benefiting from a big dose of happiness in the process.

Giving is Contagious. When you give, you not only help the immediate recipient of your gift, you also spur a ripple effect of generosity through the community. When one person behaves generously, it inspires observers to behave generously later, toward different people. In fact, your generosity is said to have the potential to spread by three degrees—from person-to-person-toperson-to-person. Thus, each person in a network can influence dozens or even

We at iShuttle are honored to be awarded Shreveport-Bossier’s Best Limo/Party Bus company! This year has been full of challenges for us all, and in the group transportation industry, those challenges have been great. Yet here we are, at the end of the year, having had the best year in our company’s history by so many measures. Our success is the result of a dedicated team effort, from our talented drivers to logistics professionals to administrators. Our amazing staff continues to set the standard for excellent customer service and driver safety. iShuttle began this year still under strict COVID restrictions, reduced staff and service hours. We had no idea what the future had in store. Yet, this year we have expanded services with LSUHS, Ochsner, Caddo Council on the Aging, and have resumed services with all our local partners.

We’re excited to have been part of more than 100 weddings in 2021 and serviced a full schedule of corporate events. This year we have invested almost one-half million dollars in new vehicles, given pay raises to every employee, and managed to keep all our employees healthy and safe. We’ve made sizable investments in driver training, safety and compliance management technologies which will continue giving our team a competitive advantage and ensure that iShuttle drivers and vehicles remain the best on the road!

We are looking forward to meeting the transportation needs of our community in 2022. Thank you!

Sugar COOKIE

Christmas CoCktail

T

he Sugar Cookie Cocktail is a sweet, buttery drink with a delicate vanilla flavor of a frosted sugar cookie. However, while it tastes like a simple sugar cookie, it definitely has a kick that will add some jolly to your holiday festivities. It’s basically a drinkable, loaded cookie. The flavor profile is lifted by vanilla-flavored vodka. Vanilla vodka is an absolute must—it has just a touch of sweetness and is less aggressive than plain vodka. You’ll also need to pick up some amaretto and a bottle of Irish cream. Get that cocktail shaker out, and get ready to shake! Combine the ingredients in the shaker, shake, and pour into your glass. It is as easy as that.

INGREDIENTS

Ǫ Ǫ Ǫ Ǫ Ǫ Ǫ Ǫ

Vanilla frosting and sprinkles 1 1/2 ounce vanilla vodka 1 1/2 ounces Irish cream 2 ounces whole milk 1-ounce amaretto 1 teaspoon powdered sugar Ice

STEPS

50

DECEMBER 2021

| SBMAG.NET

1.

Spread frosting along the rim of a glass. Pour the sprinkles into a shallow dish, and dip the frosting-covered glass into the sprinkles.

2.

Combine the vanilla vodka, Irish cream, milk, amaretto, powdered sugar, and ice in a cocktail shaker. Close and shake for at least 20 seconds to mix and chill.

3.

Strain and pour into prepared glass. Serve immediately.

New Year's

EVE sParklEr

N

ew Year’s Eve is perhaps the most iconic holiday for drinking. Of course, this is mainly due to the signature drink of the holiday—Champagne. This New Year’s Eve sparkling mix starts with a berry-flavored vodka—of your choice. Then, add some pomegranate or cranberry juice, or both. The amount of sweetness is up to you, but try to avoid artificial flavorings and sweeteners. The last part of the New Year’s Eve Sparkler is the Champagne. Don’t use a pricey bottle since it will be mixed with fruit, vodka, and juices. Be mindful to avoid anything too sweet—or else the drink could end up a syrupy mess.

INGREDIENTS

Ǫ Ǫ Ǫ Ǫ

1-ounce berry-flavored vodka 1 1/2 oz cranberry juice or pomegranate juice 3 1/2 ounces of chilled Champagne Skewered raspberries for garnish

STEPS

1.

Add the vodka and cranberry or pomegranate juice to chilled Champagne.

2. Garnish with raspberries on a long skewer. SBMAG.NET

G Track Your Progress. Type or handwrite a log for January. Begin with why you are going dry and what you expect to occur. Each day track how you feel, physically and mentally. It’s also a good idea to include other items like social outings, drink choices, exercise, weight, and how you filled your time to see how it changes.

DRY CHAMPAGNE… DRY MARTINI…

DRY JANUARY?

W

BY ELIZABETH BEARD DEAL

hether it’s a desire to be healthier, recover from the holidays, or reduce overall alcohol consumption, choosing a onemonth sobriety challenge to abstain from alcohol during January is beginning to catch on. A Morning Consult poll conducted in January 2021 found that 13 percent of respondents in the U.S. were participating in "Dry January,” up from 11 percent in previous years. Will that number keep rising in 2022? People drink alcohol for a variety of reasons, including to make social connections and manage stress. More recently, it’s not uncommon to hear people admit to drinking more during the pandemic. Read on to find out if participating in Dry January might be enticing to you.

Ever thought about some of the negative effects alcohol can have? Here are some benefits that may come with Dry January: • • • •

Better Decision-Making Better Sleep More Energy Clearer Head

• • • •

Healthier Liver Lower Blood Glucose Weight Loss Better Skin

Thinking of trying it? Here are some ways to approach Dry January: G Plan Ahead. My mother always says, “plan your work and work your plan.” You definitely don’t want to get caught without a plan on this one. Determine what the hardest part will be for you and how you intend to tackle it. Use this list to plan for the resources and people you will turn to for support.

G Determine Your New Routine. If you like to come home every day after work and have a drink on your favorite sofa, then your new routine could be as simple as swapping it out for a non-alcoholic drink on the sofa instead. On the other hand, if you can’t imagine succeeding at that, then replace the entire scenario. Go to another room, or run an errand, visit a friend, or exercise during that time after work. G Replace Your Drink. You may want an alcohol replacement, like non-alcoholic beer, wine, or sparkling wine, or something simple like sparkling water, soda water, or seltzer water with fresh fruit, juice, or herbs. Other options to explore are Kava, Kombucha, Mocktails, Shrubs, and Tea. Healthy non-alcoholic spirits in different flavors are also available, most with some combination of mixed adaptogens, botanicals, nootropics, spices, or fruits. Many have no calories, sweeteners, animal products, or additives, but you’ll need to check product labels. There are plenty of books and blog articles with recipes and advice for the sober curious. G Ask a Friend to Participate. Having a friend or accountability partner in the challenge will be a big asset toward success. Even if they don’t want to be a part, you can still ask them for support. G Exercise More. Now that you have more time (and energy?), try walking, running, swimming, yoga, meditation, biking, playing a sport, or another favorite activity that gets you moving. G Start Something New. This could be a book or a project or a lesson or a hobby. Something that will appeal to the soul and focus the mind. G Stay Away From Tempting People and Places. It’s only 31 days. Enough said. G Get Back on the Wagon. If you find yourself having a drink, don’t give up completely. Nobody’s perfect. Just start fresh the next day with a goal to finish the month strong. G Reflect. Be proud of your accomplishment and think about how you feel physically and emotionally. Read your log from start to finish to see what your challenges were and how you handled them. Regardless if you decide to stay alcohol-free, reduce your alcohol intake, or return to your former habits, you will have a newfound awareness of your relationship with alcohol and its impact on your health and lifestyle. This article is intended for informational purposes only. Please consult a doctor or treatment center before changing your diet or if you need help managing your alcohol consumption.

rious cat. A snow globe can easily be knocked off a shelf and broken. Broken glass on the floor can be a major hazard for you and your pet.

KEEP YOUR KITTY

OFF THE NAUGHTY LIST

W

hile families and friends get together this year to celebrate Christmas and indulge in the wonderful festive season, it is important that we remember to be mindful of our feline family members. Unfortunately, there are many dangers that your cat can encounter this holiday season. Some of these dangers are obvious, but some are not so obvious. Here is a list of some things to be aware of and the best way to keep your cat off Santa's Naughty List this year. Sweets Don’t leave chocolate or other candies out where your pet can get to it. Even if it’s wrapped, never leave it under the Christmas tree, and always remember to place candy dishes out of their reach. The pancreas of dogs and cats are very sensitive to fatty and sugary foods, which can cause the organ to become inflamed. Christmas Tree To prevent mischievous cats from using your Christmas tree as a new scratching post, try making a cat repellent to spray on your tree. Ř Ř Ř Ř Ř

Fill a 1-quart spray bottle with water. Add a teaspoon of eucalyptus/peppermint oil to water. Mix 1 tablespoon of lemon/orange oil into the bottle. Close the bottle and shake the mixture thoroughly. Spray the repellent onto the entire Christmas tree.

Also, it’s a good idea to secure your Christmas tree to a wall or doorway with some fishing line to help keep it from falling over if your cat gets the urge to climb it. Candles and Snow Globes Never leave lit candles unattended. You don’t want your cat’s curiosity setting your house on fire. Your furry friend might have nine lives, but you definitely don’t. It’s always best to put your pet in a safe and secure place if you have candles lit. Snow globes can also be alluring to a cu-

Christmas Tree Lights Everyone is mesmerized by Christmas lights—including your furry friend. Christmas lights present multiple dangers for your pet. They can get tangled up in them or get an electric shock. Unfortunately, your cat’s attraction to the pretty lights may lead to chewing on the wires, which could result in being electrocuted. Hide and secure electrical cords for lights. A pet-proof rubber cord protector is a good way to prevent injury.

Decorations, Tinsel, & Holiday Plants Be careful of dangling decorations; these can be a real choking or injury risk. Cats are attracted to shiny things that move, so be mindful of putting sparkly decorations within your kitty’s reach. You don’t want them eating ornaments or tinsel. Also, remember that mistletoe, holly berries, and poinsettias are toxic to pets. Keep these plants out of reach. Prepare a Safe Space Create a safe place where your kitty could escape and relax from all of the holiday festivities. This is especially true when hosting parties or overnight guests that are unfamiliar to your pet. So find a room or a quiet part of your house that can serve as your cat's hideout during the holidays, preferably in a location close to the litter box. Make them comfortable by providing them with a bed and their favorite toys, and move the food and water dishes there, too. Wishing you all a happy and pet-safe holiday season! The winter holidays are fun and exciting, but parties, decorations, and holiday foods can be hazardous for your pet. So as you prepare your holiday feast and deck the halls, keep this list in mind to ensure you and your furry feline have a safe and happy holiday.

MANOLOGY

BY ADAM BAILEY

AMAZING house guest

how to be an

1. Let Them Know When You Plan to Arrive and Leave. Let your host know what time you will arrive and what time you plan to leave. This gives them time on both ends to prepare for your coming and know when their hosting duties are finished! It’s respectful and allows your host to make plans for the rest of their day. 2. Bring a Gift. A grateful guest always brings their host a gift—at least a little something to show their gratitude. No need to haul something huge and extravagant to their place. A local treat from your hometown bakery, a coffee table book, flowers, or bottle of wine are all classic wins, but you can be creative if you know their personality well!

Whether you’re crashing with a friend for convenience, invited for a leisurely stay at a cousin’s lake house, or headed to your future in-laws’ place for the first visit— house guest etiquette matters. If you have ever hosted family or friends, you know just how refreshing a well-behaved and respectful house guest is, and how exhausting a not-so-awesome house guest can be.

3. Be Respectful of Their Schedules. During your time there, daily life may still happen for your host. Kids still need to go to school, parents to work, among other things! Be wary of when you are in the way and give them space to do their usual routines! 4. Follow the House Rules. Each home is different! When you arrive, gently inquire about how things are done to avoid any misunderstandings. What time does everyone usually wake up and go to bed? Anything you should know about

the kids or pets? Should you leave the thermostat alone? Pick up on other house rules—like whether you should take your shoes off or if you shouldn’t bring your phone to the dinner table—by being in tune with your hosts. 5. Limit Your Phone Use. Spending too much time with your face in a screen will make your hosts feel like they’re boring you (and, honestly, you might be boring them). It makes your company feel like there’s somewhere else you’d rather be, or someone else you’d rather be spending time with. Limit screen time and only check emails, texts, and social media in the privacy of your own room. 6. Be Extremely Helpful. Unhelpful guests rarely get invited back. Things you should offer to do—help prep or cook meals; set the table and do the dishes; drive people in your car; occupy the kids while their parents take a well-deserved nap; fix a little something around the house if you have the skills; or take the dog for a walk. Even if you’re turned down, your host will appreciate the gesture. 7. Offer to Buy Dinner. If applicable, treat your host to a nice dinner! This doesn’t have to be at a restaurant, you can simply offer to pay for some extra groceries. If you are driving around town a lot during your stay, you can also offer to pay for some gas as a sign of your gratitude.

MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR!

#1 IN ROOFING

8. Leave Things Better Than How You Found Them. If there’s one thing to take away from these etiquette tips, it should be this—leave the place as clean as possible when you go. The last thing you want is for your host to have to hire a cleaner after your stay. On your last day, triple-check the bedroom and bathroom for your belongings, and strip the sheets and put them in a pillowcase at the foot of the bed. Do a quick wipe-down of the counters in the bathroom for toothpaste, extra cups, or loose hair. And, of course, return any items to their place, like a book or magazine you borrowed from the bookshelf. 9. Make Sure You Say Thank You. Thank your host three times—when you arrive, when you’re about to leave, and once more after you’ve written a handwritten thank-you note. Believe me when I say an email won’t cut it. Throw in a specific detail about how much fun you had doing a certain activity, how hard you laughed at a particular story, or how delicious a specific meal was. Finish with an offer to open up your own place later on.

Jeff wants to say THANK YOU AGAIN and he, Christiana, Addie, and Annabelle wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Jeffrey Lyons began his career with Morgan Keegan in 2010, which was shortly thereafter acquired by Raymond James. Growing up with a dad as a financial advisor, he feels as though he has been doing this his whole life. Although there are many areas of wealth management, Jeff’s main areas of focus are private clients, investment management, retirement planning for individuals and businesses, life insurance, education planning, and estate planning. Jeffrey’s mission in life is to create a Christ-centered, culture-changing community. He believes this is something we can do everywhere we go, in every conversation we have, and that it is a choice we make every day.

SB COMMUNITY

L

BY URSULA BRANTLEY

ong before there was a term for it, humans have found solace in artistic expression. For centuries, people have found themselves and lighted their paths through music, artwork, words, and the stage. The arts have the power to unify people from all walks of life. Glass blowing and sculpting requires great patience and intimacy that allows the artist to slow down and really become one with their artwork. In 2016, Eric Hess and his partner Michelle Pennington had a sit down with the Shreveport Regional Arts Council about bringing a glass studio to the Shreveport/ Bossier area and soon, Sanctuary Glass Studio was a reality. What started as a small group dedicated to making a change has grown to a thriving 501(c) (3) non-profit organization that touches thousands of lives each year. The dream of starting a glass studio came to Hess after realizing how glass can be utilized to heal and improve people’s lives. “The more you get into it, the more you want to do,” he said. The Sanctuary Glass Studio offers create-yourown glass opportunities and the opportunity to hold group social or business events, which help fund the Sanctuary Art School.

The mission of Sanctuary Art School is to bring the glass arts into the underserved communities. It provides arts projects and classes for the elderly, veterans, disabled, children and families that are economically challenged. The school provides a means to access practice in the glass arts, making glass arts available to artists, students, and anyone wanting to utilize glass as an art form for a sliding scale fee. During the year the school offers classes in glass blowing, kiln casting, sand casting, glass mosaics, and hot sculpting. The name choice of “sanctuary” reflects its purpose: to be a safe place that’s fully accessible for all people regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, social/financial status, disability, or anything else.

Outreach is an important goal, and the first program offered by Sanctuary was Glass Warriors. This program gives veterans with PTSD the opportunity to work through their struggles by focusing their attention on something other than their many mountains. Every eight weeks, two veterans are taught the art of glass and are given the opportunity to use their hands to create beauty. The delicacy of glassblowing encourages a sense of calm that is vital to battling PTSD. Sanctuary collaborates with local organizations to provide programs for those who wouldn’t normally have access to the arts. For example, once a month Volunteers of America and

Shriner’s Hospital bring in children for a day of fun to create glass artwork. These disadvantaged children and children fighting medical battles are free to express and explore in a healthy environment. Sanctuary also partners with Louisiana Association for the Blind and local nursing homes so residents may create mosaics and paint glass. As Sanctuary looks to its future, the plan is to continue to expand to touch more lives. They are working on offering more mediums for artists and art enthusiasts such as painting, drawing, wood, iron, textiles, and photography. Sanctuary Arts School and Glass Studio is also spearheading a statewide initiative to save the empty B’Nai Zion Temple in Downtown Shreveport, one of the most important architecturally significant historic buildings in the city. The synagogue will give life to a 15,000 square foot glass studio that will be open to everyone in the community. The move to the Temple will ensure that generations of artists to come will have a place nearby to learn and create.

Holiday Nostalgia:

Enhancing Memory through Relationship

M

BY DONESA WALKER

emories...light the corners of my mind” say the words to the old song “The Way We Were.” This is exactly the key to boosting memory. Memories really do light the corners of our brain by causing synaptic fire through the neurons. There is no time like the holidays to gather with friends and family and relive the times past. It is always entertaining to see who remembers what part of the event and who has colored those memories with rose colored glasses into nostalgia. After almost two years of being separated from family, many will choose to gather again this year and this connection can strengthen what has eroded.

Singing songs, playing games, sharing memories…all of these stimulate the brain to grey which is what we want our brain to do to grow and stay active. An amazing way to boost memory over the holiday season and help a loved one recall is to play games and activities that stimulate memory and work on recall together. Being deliberate about playing games that perhaps recall parts of life or allow one to explore new places is a great way to build/connect that grey matter. Playing card games can improve short-term memory as well as long-term memory.

Social connection is an important part of the brain as it stimulates the brain to make more connections and to ignite certain areas, much like learning a new language does. It is especially important for the aging brain. A recent study* found that social connections boosted the grey matter in the brain giving it a better microstructure. These social connections like experiences are the roadmap to memory building. Study after study has proven that the key to a healthy brain is an active brain and this includes socializing and getting out.

Ǫ BRIDGE. The best card games are those that demand memory, strategy and attentiveness. Bridge is one such game. It teaches logic, reasoning, quick thinking, patience, concentration and partnership skills. Bridge also involves at least 4 people so there is a valuable social component to the game as well.

96

DECEMBER 2021

| SBMAG.NET

There are cards games of varying difficulty levels to choose from:

Ǫ GO FISH. Card games don’t have to be as complex as bridge to help with mental acuity. Even simple card games like Go Fish help exercise the brain.

Ǫ GIN RUMMY. This is an old favorite that’s easy to learn but requires careful attention. A player needs to track what cards have been picked up and which have been discarded. Ǫ POKER. Organize a poker night for your family and make sure your parents come! Play games like 5 Card Draw or Texas Hold ‘em. Ǫ BLACKJACK. These card games can be a lot of competitive fun. They also require concentration and visual memory. Ǫ SOLITAIRE. Even a game of Solitaire can be a good brain game. However, card games that involve others have the additional benefit of promoting socialization. This interaction with others is known to help promote brain health as well as emotional well-being. Ǫ Many websites provide lists of more card games—and you just need a simple deck of cards. The New England Journal of Medicine studied people over the age of 75 who engage in brain-stretching board games. These people were less likely to develop dementia than their peers who didn’t play these games. AARP members can play “Staying Sharp” games on the aarp.com website.

Some great games that are good exercises for the brain are:

Ǫ CHECKERS. This is a classic game that can be played with grandkids. There are many ways to play and checkers can be played with little ones and older ones. Ǫ CHINESE CHECKERS. Work the problem-solving muscle by figuring out how to move the marbles when moves seem limited. Because there are small pieces, it’s not recommended near infants or toddlers.

Ǫ MAHJONG. Popular with the ladies and strategically demanding. This one works out your mental reasoning and logic which is an important life skill and test taking skill. Ǫ BACKGAMMON. This game requires critical thinking to beat your opponent. Many people have never learned to play this infinitely challenging game. Ǫ DOMINOS. This requires thinking ahead and concentration. This game can be played with a whole bunch of people on teams and can go on for hours. There are also other versions which can be played with littles such as rhyming dominoes or Triominos. Ǫ BINGO. A simple game but one that usually involves a lot of other people and is good for socialization. It can be used in a large group and customized to an event such as a holiday gathering or even a baby shower. One advantage of these games is that it opens conversation and memories related to the games so that family begins to connect and grandparents begin sharing history with grandkids through the life of the game. Whatever route you go with your holiday, remember that taking time to socialize, play games, sing songs and spend time in relationship is the key to building a better brain. And when the holidays are over, remember to continue to sharpen your brain through brain games and activities no matter your age. “Can it be that it was all so simple….misty water colored memories of the way we were…” *Greater Social Engagement and Greater Gray Matter Microstructural Integrity in Brain Regions Relevant to Dementia | The Journals of Gerontology: Series B | Oxford Academic (oup.com) Donesa Walker, M.Ed., BCCS, is the owner of LearningRx of Shreveport-Bossier.

SB ART & CULTURE

BY SEVA MAY

A

rtists share their story through their artwork. And every artist must begin somewhere. Most often, a school art teacher will light that spark that will grow into a lifelong love of creating art.

Why is art education important to our children? Several studies have shown that the aesthetic experience of creating art is linked to broad improvements in the child’s emotional and physical well-being. Providing “the time, space, and materials for creative expression can lower stress, improve memory, and make them feel more socially connected.” (Stefano Mastandea, 2019) After the last couple of years we’ve all experienced, never has art in our schools been so vitally important.

THE STORY

The Bossier Parish Student Art Show is presented by the Bossier Arts Council. In celebration of our area’s students, beginning December 1, 2021, and running through January 31, 2022, students from schools across Bossier Parish will be the highlight of the East Bank Gallery. These gifted, young artists, aging from kindergarten to the 12th grade, submitted their original work to be selected for display at the gallery. A total of $1500 will be awarded in several categories. The teachers of winning students will also be awarded a prize match for their classrooms. The Best in Show winner will have their work used in the promotional material for next year’s Bossier Parish Student Art Show. This year, along-side the 2021 Bossier Parish Student Art Show, the Teachers in the Talented Arts Program (TAP) will display their artworks in the Emerging Gallery.

what's your

WORD?

I

BY SCOTT ANDERSON

t’s the most wonderful time of the year. It’s time to gather with family and friends, and maybe a little eggnog, and reflect on all we’ve been through this year. And man, have we been through some stuff.

But the excitement of the season doesn’t stop there. This not only is a time for love and laughter, but as we look ahead to 2022, it is a time for hope and wonder as well.

This is the time of year when people resolve to reinvent themselves in the new year by losing weight, reading books or saving money. Be honest… you’ve already shopped around for a gym membership and subscribed to three YouTube channels that promise to teach you to be a better cook come Jan. 1. Before you break out the legal pad and make that list of life-changing resolutions that you will just set aside and lose by Valentine’s Day anyway, let’s propose a simpler solution. One word. Yep. What if you synthesized all your thoughts and dreams for the coming year into a single word? Not a motto, or a slogan. More like the foundation you will build upon for the year.

108

DECEMBER 2021

| SBMAG.NET

Let’s face it, resolutions almost always wind up being a long list of self-imposed sanctions and limitations. But a precisely chosen word, in its minimalism, opens the mind, and life, to possibilities. Look at it this way: which would you rather tell yourself on New Year’s Day, “Don’t eat cake,” or “Explore.” Psychology Today identified four reasons many New Year’s resolutions fail. In a nutshell, the study found people lack clarity in setting resolutions, they get overwhelmed by the resolutions, they get discouraged and sometimes, they just aren’t ready for all that change. Resolutions become walls that we erect around ourselves, establishing limits. Build enough of them, and you begin to feel confined by them. No wonder many people get discouraged and quit. But a single word is a launching pad. It gives you something to stand on but allows for freedom and flexibility on the journey. Elizabeth Dhokia is a writer and the host of the podcast “The Good Life Unravelled.” She says that a word for the year is a kinder, gentler way to grow than resolutions. It provides guidance and focus and takes the focus off succeeding or failing.

If the past two years have taught us anything, it’s that we need to be flexible. I don’t think anyone had ‘surviving the uncertainty of a global pandemic’ on their list of resolutions for 2020, or 2021. How do you choose from among all the words out there one that will guide you through the coming year? The specific steps from the experts differ in the details, but it all comes down to a few basic steps: 1.

Reflect: Look back on the year that has been. Where were your victories and losses? How did those things make you feel? What do you want to see and experience more in your life? What do you want to see and experience less?

2.

Project: Visualize where you want to be this time next year. Turn off the TV and the cell phone for this one. Get alone and ponder how you would improve yourself and your situation. How would you like to feel differently in a year?

3.

Brainstorm: Set yourself a time limit and jot down all the words that come to mind. No thinking or analyzing — just writing. Joy. Abundance. Patience. Peace. Discipline. Health. Calm. Persistence. Gratitude. Family. Give. Create your own list of meaningful words.

4. Refine: Look back on the list and begin to eliminate the words that do not resonate with you. Narrow the list down to the top three.

5.

Select: Separate those final three words from the castoffs. Is there one that just keeps repeating itself over and over in your mind? Ask yourself, “Am I truly committed to this word, or am I just interested in it?” When you find the one you can go all-in on, you will have your word for the year.

There are plenty of resources on the internet to help you find the word that works for you. Just remember that the word should be freeing, not confining. If you feel trapped, you have chosen the wrong word. What do you do then? Go back to step one and choose another word, regardless of the date on the calendar. I’ll be honest… I have not ever chosen a word for the year. Oh, I gave up on resolutions a couple of years ago. And in 2020, like a million other folks, I took the easy route and decided “Vision” would be a great word for the year. But I didn’t put any thought into it. It was 2020, how could the word not be vision, right? Last year at this time, I had the word “Progress” thrust upon me for 2021. I didn’t object to it; I just didn’t choose it myself (if you know, you know). And because I embraced progress as my word for 2021, I am free to choose a word for 2022.

And you are too, regardless of what happed this past year. Challenge yourself. Dream big! The possibilities abound! Let the adventure begin!

Thank You for Voting We live to help people upskill or reskill to achieve their educational goals and pilot their careers. We offer a variety of educational programs, including exam prep, skills training for in-demand occupations, and enriching leisure experiences. In 2021, we made history by introducing the popular course on Careers in the Legal Cannabis Industry. In addition, we hosted conferences on Bullying and Suicide Prevention and Mental Health and Substance Abuse Prevention. We also had a blast preparing the next generation to succeed in life and career with our summer of STEAM camps. So if you’re thinking about a new career path or advancing your career with additional educational goals, we’re here to help you. Visit www.ce.lsus.edu (318) 798-4177 continuinged@lsus.edu
