Company News

As we move into the warmer months, it is easy to see why we all live here. The area has so much to offer outdoors, so I thought I would tell you about one of my favorite places to visit just minutes from Syracuse. The Salmon River in Pulaski is that spot.

From fishing to hiking to rafting, floating even whitewater kayaking, it is amazing treasure less than an hour north of Syracuse. Get out and enjoy. Stop in to The Mill House Market for lunch or dinner the food is fantastic and fresh and staffed with hard-working folks.

Things are 'moving' along at Byrne Cortlandville

Our team continues the process of retooling the facility to produce extended shelf life (ESL) products, including milk and Half & Half. New processing and filling equipment lines will be installed, and the building footprint will be expanded. The company is expected to employ more than 80 people as production fully resumes in late 2022. Byrne employs about 500 people in its Central New York dairy plants and warehouses.

COVID-19 Update

A month ago, we re-instituted the use of masks at our facilities in response to significant uptick in infection rates throughout our region. We are watching the numbers on a daily basis and have established some metrics on when to depart from the mask protocol. Those metrics are:

Two weeks of the following:

Onondaga and Cortland County positivity rates below 5 %

Onondaga and Cortland County 7 day trend of positivity rates below 7 %

Less than 8 of our Byrne employees out with active cases No County / State / Federal mask mandates in place.

For now, we need everyone’s continued cooperation to stay the course, wear masks properly, and take prudent measures with social distancing, use of hand sanitizer, vaccination / boosters as they become available. We will continue to provide you with periodic updates with our goal to move away from mandatory mask wearing as soon as the data supports the ability to do so.

All Byrne facilities are actively involved in the continued rollout of “Decision Based Safety Management” (DBSM). DBSM is a safety program based on observations of work tasks, focusing on coaching opportunities that reinforce safe practices and pointing out opportunities to correct unsafe behaviors. Over the past year, managers and supervisors have performed these observations, and we are now expanding the program to involve all employees at every level Our goal is to continue to evolve our safety culture and get people thinking about “doing the right thing when nobody’s watching.”

Safe behaviors are something we need to think about at work and at home. Challenge yourself on some common safe and unsafe behaviors: Do you text while driving? Do you ever use safety glasses at home? Do you always wear your seatbelt?

Consistently adopting safe behaviors will help you avoid a potentially life-changing incident.
