Junior Auxiliary of Byram‐Terry Welcomes Incoming Provisional Class

Junior Auxiliary of Byram-Terry welcomes its new active members who, on January 8, 2019, successfully completed the training period for the 2018 Provisional class. For the past six months, these women attended chapter meetings and projects to determine if they wish to volunteer their time to the Byram and Terry communities through this organization for the next five years.

Junior Auxiliary is a national non-profit organization that encourages members to render charitable services which are beneficial to the general public, with particular emphasis on children.

Junior Auxiliary of Byram-Terry is a part of the National Association of Junior Auxiliaries (NAJA), a non-profit organization founded in 1941 with headquarters in Greenville. NAJA has more than 13,500 active, associate, and life members in 101 chapters in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee and Texas.

The NAJA slogan is “Care Today – Character Tomorrow” and when teamed with the current focus of the Association, Junior Auxiliary Chapters are working more than ever before to increase awareness of child health and welfare and how it affects their futures.

Bring your old flag to the fire station and place it in the box which is located in the front lobby. The flags will be transferred to a boy scout troop to be retired properly in an official flag burning ceremony.

Hughes named employee of the month at Mississippi State Hospital WHITFIELD — Gwendolyn Hughes has been named Mississippi State Hospital’s January Employee of the Month for Direct Care.

Assists at State Capitol

Jaudoriah Ball and Christopher Buie of Byram, and Shamia Thompson of Jackson, recently served as junior pages for the Mississippi Senate. Pages assist in the day-today operations of the Senate, generally running errands for officials and staff. Jaudoriah, Christopher and Shamia are pictured with Senator David Blount who sponsored their visit. Jaudoriah is the daughter of Loretta McGrigg-Ball and attends Terry High School; Christopher is the son of Sheila Franklin-Buie and attends Terry High School and Shamia is the daughter of Cynthia Thompson and attends Wingfield High School.

When asked about the week, they said, it was a great opportunity to serve the state and represent their communities. They firmly believe that in order to make a difference in politics, you first have to learn the processes and people behind the laws. All three students are grateful to Senator Blount for giving them the chance to learn and grow as young leaders in Mississippi.

FRONT PORCH RAMBLINGS

by Joe Woods Now that the important football games of the ’18-’19 season are over, it is time to turn my attention to the remainder of our winter season. Although, we have had some cool and cold rainy days, all-nall it has been a very mild and enjoyable wintertime for me and Mary Anne. Yes, we have had our usual good duties, taking care of our two little grandsons but, we also had time to do the many things we like to do. She had the opportunity to read several books she acquired over the year.

I had the opportunity to work on my wood crafts which are displayed at Benjamin’s Custom Frames and Fine Art store on the square in Raymond. I get a great deal of pleasure making sawdust, which I consider to be mental therapy. It gives me a chance to take a piece of old rough wood and craft something of beauty. Ben and Amy have given me several design ideas which have guided me in the right direction. The wood cutoffs have provided just enough fuel to start a cozy fire in the fireplace. After the wood burns down, leaving a bed of coals, I add a piece of seasoned oak and I’m very comfortable for several hours.

One of my specialties is making weathered barn wood picture frames. The problem is my weathered wood has been used up and attempts to find a suitable stain have proven to be futile. So I went online and found a formula for making stain using a pad of steel wool and vinegar. It is a simple process. Just place a pad of steel wool in a container and add enough distilled vinegar to cover the pad.

A light stain will be created in about 15 minutes or if you prefer a darker stain let it sit for a longer period of time. I let one container sit for 2 days and which resulted in a red stain that worked beautifully on a piece of southern yellow pine. And, still if you prefer a more dramatic effect let it set for a month. Through trial and error, I found that open grain wood works better than tightly grained wood such as red oak or maple. Wood with a more distinct grain such hickory or ash finishes well. Other good candidates are western cedar and sap cypress. It is always fun and rewarding for me to experiment and learn more new tricks with wood.

But soon my time spent in my workshop will be restricted. It will be time to plant my nursery, prune my trees, control burning of my pasture and tree planting. The

garden will beckon me and Mary Anne the lawn will need some attention also.

'Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom' Colossians 3:16 The Apostle Paul in his letter to the Corinthian church says that the way of the world is foolishness to God and the foolishness of God, Jesus Christ and him crucified, is wisdom to man. He purposely points us to the insufficiency of man’s wisdom and the sufficiency of God’s.

But as we consider this Colossian command, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom,” we might ask, practically speaking, what is this wisdom from God, this wisdom that he imparts to man? When the Reformed theologians spoke about the attributes of God, they would classify those characteristics into two groups: incommunicable and communicable attributes.

The first group contains qualities which point to God's transcendence and show how vastly different He is from us, those He has created. God's independence describes His self-existence and self-sufficiency. His immutability describes God's total freedom from change. He is entirely consistent in His actions. There is no shadow of turning with Him (James 1:7).

His infinity describes his freedom from all limits of time and space, i.e., His eternity, omnipresence and omnipotence. His simplicity describes the fact that there are in Him no elements that can conflict, so unlike us, He cannot be torn different ways by divergent thoughts and desires. These qualities are called incommunicable because they are characteristic of God alone. Man does not and cannot share any of them, because he is finite and created. These are attributes that are not communicated to man in any way.

The communicable attributes are those qualities like God's spirituality and freedom, along with His moral attributes - goodness, truth, holiness, and righteousness. As God made man in His own image (Gen. 1:26f.), he made him

a free spiritual creature, a responsible moral human being with powers of choice and action, able to commune with Him and respond to Him, and by nature good, truthful, holy, and upright.

He made him 'godly.' These moral qualities which belong to the divine image were lost in the Fall, through Adam’s first sin.

God's image in man has been universally defaced. All mankind has in one way or another lapsed into ungodliness.

There is none righteous, not even one (Rom. 3:10). The Bible tells us that God is at work in Christian believers to repair His ruined image by communicating these qualities to them. Those God calls are being renewed in the image of Christ (2 Cor. 3:18) and of God (Col 3:10) through the power of His Spirit.

God is wise in Himself, so He imparts wisdom to men. But where does that wisdom come from? Ultimately from the regenerating power of the Holy Spirit working in those he calls, effectually calling those who would be saved. Proverbs 4:5 tells us to "Acquire wisdom! Acquire understanding!" So how do we get that wisdom, that knowledge?

There are two prerequisites according to the Scriptures. First, we must learn to reverence God. "The fear of the lord is the beginning of wisdom (Ps. 111:10; Prov. 9:10; 1:7; 15:33). It is not till we have become humble and teachable, standing in awe of God's holiness and sovereignty, acknowledging our own littleness, distrusting our own

thoughts, and willing to have our minds turned upside down, can divine wisdom become ours. It is with the lowly that wisdom is found (Prov. 11:2). Is it any wonder that all too many of us by living in such an unhumbled and conceited frame of mind never really gain wisdom from God at all?

The second prerequisite is this: learn to receive God's word. Wisdom is divinely given to those, and only those, who apply themselves to God's revelation. The Psalmist said, "I have more insight than all my teachers, for Your testimonies are my meditation" (Ps. 119:99). Paul admonishes the Colossians: "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom" (Col 3:16).

How do we do this? There's only one way: by drenching ourselves in the Scriptures, for these and these alone are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus (2 Tim. 3:15-17).

Why is it that so many today who profess to be followers of Christ never learn wisdom? They either don't truly understand what it is to 'fear the Lord" and/or they are not attending sufficiently to God's written word. I fear it is more a result of the last rather than the first.

Many of the saints of old applied themselves to a diligent diet of reading God's Word. William Gouge, the Puritan, read fifteen chapters regularly each day. Thomas Cranmer (Archbishop of Canterbury, 16th cent.) developed a Prayer Book lectionary that systematically takes its reader through the Old

Testament once, and the New Testament twice every year. How long has it been since you read through the Bible?

Do you spend as much time with the Bible each day as you do even with the newspaper, the television, or a 'good' book? Do you read more of the Scriptures each day than you do of “news” on social media sites? What fools some of us are!

Unfortunately, we remain fools all our lives, simply because we will not take the time or the trouble to do what has to be done to receive the wisdom which is God's free gift. I encourage you to begin today. The New Year has already begun and is quickly passing away. January is gone. February is upon us. Start now! Read God's word every day. Systematically set aside a time each day to bask in the wisdom of God's Word. The only way to "Let the Word of Christ dwell richly in you” is to get the Word in front of you. That takes more than just sitting in a Sunday School class or listening to a sermon once a week (although those are good things.) It takes more than periodically verifying a point of doctrine or answering a troublesome question for a friend.

Obtaining wisdom is a life-long pursuit that involves a healthy fear of the Lord.

It involves daily communion with Him through reading and meditating upon His Word, which is life and breath to us.

Almighty God, who alone can order my unruly will and affections, grant to me a love for the things which you command and a burning desire for the close fellowship of your Word. Give me wisdom so in the midst of the many changes of this world my heart might surely upon your word be fixed and there find true joy in the hope of my salvation through Jesus Christ my Lord, the Living Word . . . At Home with Real Estate

Government Shutdown, "to be or not to be, that is the question".

As I write this article on January 23rd the shutdown is still in effect and no one is sure what tomorrow will hold.

Neither side appears to be budging and one of the questions many people ask is how the shutdown is affecting the real estate market.

The National Association of Realtors (NAR) conducted a survey earlier this month of Realtors across the nation.

75% said of those surveyed about the shutdown said there was no impact on their business but the remaining said there was some impact.

But if this shutdown prolongs, what then? Let me begin with the good news.

The majority of loans buyer's choose across the nation today are conventional loans backed by Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac. They are presently being processed without delay. The same holds true for FHA & VA loans. That might be surprising since they are a part of the government, right? Well FHA & VA use a delegated lender process in which pre-approved private lenders can originate loans without agency approval as long as the loans are being written in accordance with agency guidelines.

Now that does not mean that all types of loans are being processed without hesitation though. For example, USDA loans, that are very common in our state for rural home loans are affected. The Department of Agriculture who oversees these loans are affected by the shutdown. While they have authority to operate a delegated lender program like FHA and VA it has not been implemented yet. Currently these loans must go through the Rural Housing Service (a part of USDA) for processing and that means they are included in the shutdown too. That is very unfortunate and means delays for many buyers and sellers.

Another bright spot is that the IRS is currently verifying borrower's income for certain types of loans and selfemployed buyers. There initially were delays when the shutdown began but that has been worked out. In addition, many of you will be happy to learn that the NAR worked vigorously through their lobbying efforts to make sure that the National Flood Insurance Program remains up and running too. So buyers shouldn't have any problems getting flood insurance with their loans.

Now for the bad news. It is only logical to assume that a prolonged shutdown will have a negative effect on the market. We will see more delinquencies with mortgages and rental payments and likely see reduced spending in the broader economy. In addition, we will continue to experience eroding confidence in our government and reduced faith will likely have a negative effect on our economy. To what degree is anyone's guess.

Let us remember that we are Americans first and foremost. We the people, have faced over two hundred years of wars, we have seen political unrest, we have seen injustice and we have seen justice prevail. One party dominates for a while then the other. We win some and we lose some. Sometimes we fall and fail, lick our wounds, pick ourselves up and start again. Maintaining a rigid hard line position is like experiencing Groundhog Day over and over again. Yes, there are issues we cannot compromise on, such as life or death, justice, our Faith and the Constitution.

However, there are times we need to agree to disagree and move on for the benefit of the whole and not just a part.

Division is a vision divided. Let us keep our eye on a United States of America and remember those cherished words in our Pledge of Allegiance, "One Nation under God indivisible".

Oneness creates synergy. Synergy creates opportunity but division is usually accompanied with self-centeredness and destruction. Michael Jordan once said "There is no "i" in team and that is so true. May we all contact our elected

leaders and tell them that "we the people" are demanding that they put aside their differences for the good of the nation and to remember their oath they took when they were sworn into office.

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God." Maybe we should even ask them "who is your allegiance to? Is it to a party, an individual or to the nation?"

That would be insulting so let me propose another solution. Actions speak louder than words and actions can reveal true motives. If it is obvious our elected officials allegiance is to a party, group, individual or for personal gain then I am sure that you will agree with me that it is time for them to go.

Personally, I am proud to be an American and I know you are too.

Byram Middle School News

The Byram Middle School PTO Board saluted the First Quarter all A’s and A/B Honor Roll students with a Pizza Party on December 20, 2018. The students were invited to the cafeteria for all the pizza and bottled water they could hold to celebrate their great achievement.

There were 248 students in attendance.

The honorees were given Certificates of Achievement and an Honor Roll ribbon.

Congratulations to all Byram Middle School Honor Roll students.

The BMS Administration and PTO are so proud of these students and their teachers for their hard work and we hope to see even more of them at the Second Quarter celebration.

Refurbished newspaper machines get new lives as Children's

John Moak Scarbrough, a Jackson Academy freshman, shows his Eagle Scout project: six Little Libraries made from refurbished newspaper machines.

This past summer, the Jackson Academy freshman began working on a community service project, a requirement for Eagle Scout hopefuls. He wanted to work on a project that would last and have a real impact on his community.

His family’s support of Friends of Children’s Hospital – father John Scarbrough is treasurer for the

nonprofit – brought him to tour Batson Children’s Hospital at the University of Mississippi Medical Center to look for ways to help.

Fast forward to December, and John Moak and his Eagle Scout father were delivering six newspaper vending machines, donated by The Clarion-Ledger, that they had refurbished into Little

The machines, now coated with a shiny new paint job, don’t require coins, and their doors no longer have springs, so little fingers won’t get pinched. They’re being placed around the children’s hospital’s outpatient waiting areas, including the lobby, Eli Manning Clinics for Children, the Center for Maternal and Fetal Care, the neonatal intensive care unit waiting area, pediatric X-ray and Children’s Rehabilitative Services.

“I’m happy to see this finished,” John Moak said. “This took a lot of work, but I hope that children here will enjoy these and will make reading for enjoyment a habit.”

Sam Hall, executive editor of The Clarion-Ledger, said the newspaper was happy to donate the machines toward John Moak’s Eagle Scout project.

“Encouraging children to read is so important for their future and for the future of Mississippi. To know these newspaper machines are still bringing stories to readers makes us very happy.”

Unlike most libraries, the books inside are for patients to keep, which may help them succeed in school. The U.S. Department of Education found that the more children read for fun on their own, the higher their reading scores.

“Having a book to take home will make that easier,” John Moak said.

Each of the former newspaper machines is registered with Little Free Libraries, a nonprofit organization that fosters neighborhood book exchanges around the world.

Before the machines could be turned into Little Free Libraries, they needed a thorough cleaning. Scout friends from First Baptist Jackson’s Troop 8 joined in the effort by disassembling, cleaning and inventorying parts. Then came a brand new coat of paint from Service King Body Shop in Jackson.

John Moak chose paint colors that would coordinate with different waiting areas in the state’s only children’s hospital, in the end choosing white and gray, with a pop of color from rainbow stickers on the side.

Magnolia Label Company created the artwork design that Signs First Metro used to create the vinyl stickers that make the machines look so professional. Both companies donated their time once they found out the machines were headed to Batson.

More than 140 hours of work went into the project, John Moak’s father said.

“This is a wonderful project,” said Laurie Heiden, child life and hospital school coordinator at Batson. “Since the Little Free Libraries were delivered, I

have seen parents reading to their children. This is what it is all about – parents bonding with their children by reading together.”

The Little Free Libraries will be kept supplied with books through UMMC’s Office of Development and by hospital volunteers.

Obituary CHANCELLOR FUNERAL HOME BYRAM Arlene Roberts Byram Arlene “Granny” Sistrunk Roberts, 87, passed away Monday, January 7, 2019 at MS Baptist Medical Center in Jackson.

Visitation was 5-8pm Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at Chancellor Funeral Home in Byram. Services were 11am Thursday, January 10 at First Pentecostal Church in Jackson with visitation 10am-11am at the church. Interment followed at Lakewood South.

Mrs. Roberts was born in Sebastopol, MS to the late Ollie Lee Sistrunk and Annie Mae Purvis Sistrunk. Having lived in Jackson since 1949, she retired as Executive Secretary from Consolidated American Life Insurance. She then worked with Mississippi Children’s Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Roberts was an avid reader and enjoyed quilting. Her greatest joy was cooking for her family and others. She was a faithful, charter member of First Pentecostal Church of Jackson.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Dan Roberts. Survivors include her daughters, Robin Lowery (Danny) of Pelahatchie and Dana Byrd (Kip) of Columbia, MS; brothers, Devon Sistrunk of Byram and Jerry Sistrunk of Florence; sister, Shirley Kemp of Carthage; grandchildren: Ben (Jamie) Lowery, Blake (Krystal) Matthews, Emilee (Derek) Peoples and Brady (Morgan) Lowery; great grandchildren, Isabella, Ava and Charlie Matthews, Landon & Judah Lowery and Shevy, Afton & Oliver Peoples, Banks & Barron Lowery.

He loved the outdoors, enjoying hunting, fishing, golf, riding his tractor, planting fields and gardening.

Billy Earl Wynne Byram Billy Earl Wynne, 74, of Byram, Mississippi, went to be with the Lord, at home, in the presence of his family on January 21, 2019. He died after a long, courageous battle with metastatic renal carcinoma.

Billy was born in Newton, Mississippi, on August 9,1944 to Mae and John Wynne. He attended Meridian High School, Meridian Junior College, and completed his Bachelors and MBA at Mississippi State University.

Billy married Kathy Holliday on May 29, 1971 in Meridian Mississippi and they were blessed with 3 children, Corin, Brian and Amanda. He served in Vietnam and retired as a Captain in the Army. He became an Industrial Engineer and worked at MTD in Indianola, Mississippi, Quitman and Lauderdale Mills in Quitman and Lauderdale Mississippi, Fairbanks Scales in Meridian, Mississippi, and Oakdale, California, a Director of Operations at Game Time, Inc. in Fort Payne, Alabama and a Plant Manager at Sly Manufacturing in Mathiston, Mississippi, where he retired in 2008.

He was a member of Lakeshore Congregational Methodist Church in Byram, Mississippi. Billy is survived by his wife,

Kathy Wynne, daughters, Corin (Brian) Granger of Byram, Mississippi and Amanda (Michael) Atwood of Terry, Mississippi, son, Brian (Kelli Jo) Wynne of Liberty Township, Ohio, 9 grandchildren, Ashleigh and Joseph Granger, Isaac, Noah, Veronica, Eliah and Jaxson Wynne and Liam and Holli Kate Atwood, and numerous beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mae Wynne, and siblings Johnny Moore and Cecil Wynne.

It is an annual observance in the United

States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and the Republic of Ireland.

It is a celebration of African-American history. Black History Month was first proposed by black educators and the Black United Students at Kent State University in February 1969. This is the same University where members of the Ohio National Guard at Kent State University opened fire on protesting college students about the Vietnam war and specifically the Cambodia campaign in 1970.

Four students were killed and nine others were wounded and it sparked national protests and discussions about our Vietnam involvement. However, the real precursor to Black History Month was actually created in 1929 in the United States. This was started by Dr. Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History that announced that the second week of February to be 'Negro History Week'. This time was chosen because it coincided with the birthday of Abraham Lincoln on February 12 and of Frederick Douglass on February 14. Although accepted by few it soon became an educational part of areas where blacks had a significant population. There is controversy about celebrating only one races accomplishments and even Dr. Woodson didn't think it would last.

History has shown that there are many accomplished and accomplishments by blacks in all fields of science, sports, math, entrepreneurship. government, law, civil rights, military, and so forth. Those that overcame extreme hardships and government sanctioned discrimination are high on my list of respect. One such individual is Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey (1818-1895). He changed his named to Frederick Douglas to conceal his name from slave catchers. He was an American reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, statesman and escaped from slavery. He also became the first African American nominated for the Vice President of the United States on the Equal Rights Party ticket. Douglas was a firm

believer in equality of all peoples, whether black, female, Native American, or recent immigrant. He worked tirelessly in making alliances across racial and ideological divides, something that would do well for us to heed these days. Douglas was of mixed race, which likely included Native American and African on his mother's side, as well as European. His father was most likely white. Recent studies have shown that at least one third of the black population in America have some white DNA ancestry. Today it is not uncommon to see people of mixed races raising families. I have nieces and nephews of mixed race. When my nephew had a little boy about 3 years ago his eight year old daughter went to the nurses' station and told them to take the baby back because it could not be her brother he was 'lily' white. Such is life in a mixed family.

Other people, and there are many, that broke color barriers under the most difficult of circumstances are James Cleveland "Jesse' Owens (1913-1980) who was a four-time Olympic gold medalist in the 1936 games in Berlin, Germany and angered Hitler because he disproved the Aryan supremacy concept of the Nazis.

Harriet Tubman (1822-1913) was an American abolitionist and political activist who also escaped slavery and rescued slaves using the Underground Railroad.

She served as an armed scout and spy for the United States Army during the Civil War and she was an activist in the struggle for women's suffrage. More recently the names of three women mathematicians who worked for NASA and were instrumental in the Mercury and Apollo programs in the late 50's and 60's. Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Dorothy Vaughan analyzed data using mechanical calculators that were critical to the success of those space missions. John Glenn remarked that he would go into space if the 'girls' did the calculations.

Many of these are unknown figures to most Americans and should be given their due respect and honor for their contributions to America. We also celebrate Mar-

Hillcrest Bap st School A ends Band Clinic

MAIS Band Clinic is an intense three-day experience which occurs annually and allows band students to sharpen their musical skills; it was held January 10 – 12 at Hinds Community College in Raymond. Students learned new techniques, which they then applied to challenging musical pieces after trying out for and being placed in one of two ensembles. They practiced for two days, and then, on the final day of Clinic, they performed in a concert held in Cain Cochran Hall.

This year’s Clinic featured 133 participants from seven schools across the state.

Representing Hillcrest were the following: Micah Parkinson, Jesse Fountain, Phillip Hutchins, Talayeh Jones, Jared Bewley, Sarah Grace Brownlee, Danielle Wallace, Sancenia Johnson, Reece Hill, Trinity Amos, Brandon Thomason, Maddy Hughes, Josh Canoy, Alex Howell, Braxton Lewis, and Caitlyn McNamee. tin Luther King during this month as he was a civil rights activist and Baptist minister. He is best known for advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience and using the peaceful tactics of Mahatma Gandhi.

There are also many unknowns that served honorably in our Armed forces during WW I and WW II even though the US had institutional segregation and discrimination at that time. The Tuskegee Airmen served with honor and valor during WW II and earned many awards and citations. In all 992 pilots were trained in Tuskegee, 355 were deployed overseas and 84 lost their lives for our freedoms.

Today we see the word racism and discrimination bandied about in every encounter and racial issue as if it were still institutionalized and widespread.

Although still existing, as it probably always will in some sectors, it is not prevalent in our society. That is one reason I really respect those of the early years who overcame real discrimination and prejudices and still accomplished so much and gave us hope and forgiveness.

Eventually these and many more heroes will no longer have to be recognized and immortalized only during Black History Month because they will be acknowledged as AMERICANS who have helped to make America a great and noble nation under God with liberty and justice for all.

(Photo by MSU Extension/ Gary Bachman) Many home gardeners look forward to this time of year to browse catalogs in search of great new plants to enjoy in their 2019 landscapes.

The group of plants I get excited about each year are the Mississippi Medallion selections. Every year, I promote this group of plants through Southern Gardening so you will look for them at local garden centers.

The Mississippi Medallion winners for 2019 are Whopper Begonia, a collard green, Blue My Mind Evolvulus, Nyssa sylvatica and Sweetie Pie blackberry. I’m going to highlight each plant individually this year.

Since it was established in 1996, Mississippi Medallion has recognized more than 70 great landscape and vegetable plants. The program was established by the Mississippi Nursery and Landscape Association in cooperation with the Mississippi State University Extension Service and the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce. It increases awareness of plant materials and promotes the sale and production of ornamental plants in Mississippi.

Compared to national campaigns such as All-American Selections and Perennial Plant of the Year, Mississippi Medallion focuses on plants adapted to Mississippi’s environment to benefit both consumers and the green industry.

2019 marks the second time in Mississippi Medallion history that an evolvulus has been chosen. This year it is Blue My Mind.

The first evolvulus was Blue Daze, which has been around for a long time and was one of two plants chosen as the first Mississippi Medallion winners in 1996. Blue Daze has fantastic, true-blue, funnel-shaped flowers. I like the fastspreading growth rate that makes Blue Daze a good ground cover in front of an Indian hawthorn planting in my front landscape.

As good as Blue Daze is, there’s an even better evolvulus choice for 2019.

Blue My Mind is a fantastic improvement of Blue Daze evolvulus. The individual flowers continue to be funnel-shaped, and they always form near the shoot tips. Blue My Mind is a prolific bloomer. Its foliage has a downy appearance, and the 1-inch flowers are sky blue.

The flowers only open for one day.

They are brilliant blue in the morning but look quite spent by afternoon, especially in planting beds that face west and receive a high heat load each afternoon.

I’ve grown Blue My Mind in my landscape as an evaluator for the past three years. I can attest that a little afternoon shade helps ease the summer heat load, but too much shade reduces total flowering.

Blue My Mind and Blue Daze need to be planted in well-drained soil that is consistently moist. Be sure to maintain fertilization to keep the flower production at its peak. I like using water-soluble fertilizer along with the irrigation.

Only Light, Only Love

Can you believe that is already the second month of 2019? In just the last thirty-one days, so much has happened in our world. Some of the latest news headliners have been so awesome that we were compelled to do jumping jacks in our living room, while others have driven us to mourning at candlelight vigils. If you are like me, you probably have had some moments where you wonder what can we do to make our world a better place to live, work, learn, and play. Through meditation, conversing with a diverse range of people, and studying, the answers come back to two simple things; light and love.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said it best when he stated, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

As a musician growing up in a small country church, one of the first songs that I remember learning to play was This Little Light of Mine. This song speaks to how important it is to share goodness and positive vibes with anyone you meet on your journey. Each of us possess a unique gift and skill that the world needs. There is, indeed, something about darkness that can cause each of us to question our abilities and purpose, but it’s through the light of others that our path to greatness becomes crystal clear.

Be someone’s light today! And the beauty of it is that we all can help each other shine. Just think about the sun, moon, and stars. Shine and shine bright!

It is February, so let’s talk love.

Love is such a short word, but has carried generations on its back! Reflect for a moment. What has been some of your fondest memories? I would imagine that they involved interacting with someone or something that made you feel loved. I’ve said it before, everything is better with love! I want to challenge each of you over the next week to engage in one intentional act of kindness each day. Kindness is love with its work boots on. Let’s all go to work! One day at a time, one act at a time, one person at a time is just what our world needs to start its journey to back to a place of unity and peace!

Never underestimate your power! If you look back in history, change has always started with one person and then spread abroad. You can be the one person that your family, your job, your school, your community, your world needs to make it better! So, until next time, be the light and be the love!

MSU online programs once again highly ranked

STARKVILLE, Miss.— Four of Mississippi State University’s distance education programs are recognized in the 2019 U.S. News & World Report online programs rankings, with three programs ranking in the top 50 nationally in the analysis released Tuesday [Jan. 15].

The MSU College of Business’ Distance MBA program remains one of the best in the country at No. 26 in U.S. News’ Best Online MBA Program rankings. This marks the fourth consecutive year MSU’s Distance MBA program has ranked in the top 30 nationally.

“Our faculty work diligently to deliver online programs that increase accessibility to higher education and maintain the same quality instruction that students receive on campus,” said College of Business Dean Sharon Oswald. “This continued recognition from U.S. News & World Report speaks to the strength of the programs our faculty and staff have developed in partnership with the Center for Distance Education.”

The College of Business also was recognized for its Distance Master of Science in Information Systems (non-MBA), achieving a No. 33 ranking this year, up from No. 87 in 2018.

Merit Health Central to now offer 3D mammography

JACKSON/VICKSBURG, Miss., January, 24, 2019 - 3D mammography, which utilizes advanced breast screening technology, is now available at Merit Health Central.

In conventional 2D mammography, overlapping tissue is a leading reason why small breast cancers may be missed and normal tissue may appear abnormal, leading to unnecessary callbacks. A mammography exam with 3D imaging can greatly reduce the tissue overlap effect. This method is clinically proven to significantly increase the detection of breast cancers, and also decrease the number of women asked to return for additional testing.

During the exam, an X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple images. A computer then converts the images into a stack of thin layers, allowing the radiologist to review the breast tissue one layer at a time. The exam requires no additional compression and takes just a few seconds longer than a conventional 2D breast cancer screening exam.

Researchers have found that the 3D mammography exam: Finds 20 - 65% more invasive breast cancers, compared to 2D alone Is FDA approved as superior for women with dense breasts compared to 2D alone Reduces callbacks by up to 40% compared to 2D alone.

The 3D mammography system features a curved surface that mirrors the shape of a woman’s breast to reduce pinching and allow better distribution of force over the entire breast. With this extra element, the facility hopes to increase screening volume and compliance for those who might avoid mammograms due in large part to the fear of discomfort associated with breast compression.

I will be hosting a legislative forum with Sen. Derrick Simmons (D – Greenville) on Tuesday, February 26th from 6:00 to 7:00 pm at Byram Middle School. This event is free and open to the public.

Sen. Simmons serves as Chairman of the Senate Democratic Caucus and I serve as Vice Chairman. We will discuss key issues facing the Legislature this year. We welcome your participation and questions. Hope to see you there!

The legislative session is underway. Here are some of the issues I will be working on this year: Making it easier to register and vote. I will again be pushing legislation to allow early voting and online voter registration. These proposals, which I have introduced before, will make our elections more open and efficient and are already in place in most states. Early voting in the courthouse will shorten lines, increase voter participation, and protect the security of the process.

Online voter registration saves counties money and makes voting more accessible. In both cases, current state law requires a voter to show ID before casting a ballot. We also need to make it easier four students away at college to vote by absentee ballot. The more people vote, the better our government will be.

A raise for teachers, state employees, and funding for the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). State employees have not had a raise in more than ten years. It’s time to have an across the board pay raise (which benefits lower paid workers the most) for state employees and teachers. In addition, the PERS board is requiring $75 million to maintain the strength of the retirement system that covers all state, county, city, and school/college employees. The budget put forward by Republican legislative leaders does NOT fund this amount, which means workers could face a pay cut. We need to fund and protect PERS, including cost of living increases.

Helping our cities clean up blighted property. I will be sponsoring legislation to help cities create land banks to get blighted property back on the tax rolls and cleaned up. I also will be sponsoring legislation to help Jackson State University clean up property on the south side of campus and helping

local people who live in the community take charge of their neighborhood.

In addition to these bills, Legislative Democrats have agreed the following items will complete our policy goals for 2019: Education – We will continue to push full funding for public education. We want public tax dollars going to public schools.

Healthcare - Rural hospitals are closing and vital services are being discontinued because Medicaid expansion was rejected in our state. Legislative Democrats will continue to support Medicaid expansion to provide health insurance to the working poor.

Infrastructure – Last year’s special session provided long overdue help to cities and counties and passed with bipartisan support. State highways, however, have not been adequately addressed. Legislative Democrats will push for comprehensive funding for state roads and bridges.

Economic Justice – We support equal pay for equal work.

The special election to replace former Representative (now Judge) Adrienne Wooten is set for March 12. If you live in House District 71 (parts of South Jackson and Byram) and need help before this position is filled, please let me know.

Hinds CC alumnus has photography exhibit at Raymond Campus

RAYMOND – Hinds Community College alumnus Dr. Dana Moody, professor at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in the Department of Interior Ar-

chitecture and Design, will have an exhibit in the Marie Hull Art Gallery on the Raymond Campus.

Her exhibit, “Havana: Behind the Façade,” began on Jan. 14 and continues through Feb. 14 during regular gallery hours, which are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday -Thursday and 8 a.m. to noon on Fridays.

The gallery is closed on holidays when the college is closed. She will have a closing reception from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 14.

Mrs. Green earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Alcorn State University, a Master of Science Degree in Counseling Psychology and a Specialist in Educational Administration from Pearl River Community College MAPQSL. Mrs. Green has provided an outstanding educational foundation for the students and teachers at Gary Road Intermediate. Her dedication has caused students to excel academically and curtail behavioral issues. Mrs. Green wants her students and teachers to be successful. She is very supportive; her expectations are high and she wants the best from her staff.

Presidents’ Day (Washington’s Birthday)

On the third Monday in February of each year, there is a federal holiday called “Washington’s Birthday”. Many people call this holiday “Presidents Day” or “Presidents’ Day”. However, the United

States government has not changed the name of “Washington’s Birthday” to “Presidents Day”, so the holiday is still legally called “Washington’s Birthday”.

In 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Uniform Holiday Bill creating three national holidays to be celebrated on three designated Mondays during each

year. The new holidays would take effect on January 1, 1971 . This bill would allow federal employees three day weekends in which to have more family time.

The three holidays included in the bill are Washington’s Birthday, designated to be observed in February on the third Monday of the month; Memorial Day, designated to be observed in May on the last Monday of the month; and Veterans Day designated to be observed in October on the fourth Monday of the month.

Also included in the 1968 Uniform Holidays Bill was an attempt to change the holiday name from “George Washington’s Birthday” to “Presidents Day” but this portion of the bill failed. The term “Presidents Day” mainly arose from a marketing perspective for businesses.

Companies market different “Presidents Day” advertisements for “money saved” or “discounts” on items throughout stores, car lots or other business venues in order to attract a larger consumer base.

Until 1971, both Abraham Lincoln’s birthday (February 12th) and George Washington’s birthday (February 22nd) were still celebrated as individual holi-

days. Federal entities such as schools and offices were closed on both days. In 1971, President Richard Nixon signed an executive order stating that all presidents’ birthdays should be celebrated on the holiday of “Washington’s Birthday” in February.

Lincoln’s birthday was no longer considered a “holiday” day. All federal employees returned to working and students across the nation returned to learning on that day.

There are additional dilemmas surrounding George Washington’s Birthday.

One problem is that the United States Federal government has designated the third Monday of February as the celebration of his birthday; however, his actual birth date of February 22nd will never be on the third Monday of any February in any year. Another dilemma appears when businesses across the nation call the third Monday in February “Presidents Day” and not “George Washington’s Birthday”.

These discrepancies remain across the nation to this day with not a resolution in sight.

Thriving a er heart trans‐ plant, tragic fire, Gabbi Smith turns 1 Annie Oeth University of Mississippi Medical Center Division of Public Affairs JACKSON, Miss. – Gabrielle Smith looks, smiles and plays like a strong, healthy year-old baby, but that wasn’t always the case.

The youngest patient ever to undergo a heart transplant at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Gabbi celebrated her first birthday Dec. 26, due in no small part to the love and dedication of her great aunt, Cindy Thompson of Bassfield.

While awaiting a new heart, Gabbi stayed in her patient room in Batson Children’s Hospital. Her family split their time between Jackson and their home in Bassfield.

On the night of March 3, 2018, Gabbi’s parents, Latoyia and Carlos Smith, and 1-year-old sister Ivory, were spending the night at their home when tragedy struck. A fire consumed the house, killing all of its occupants. Because she was away from home as a hospital patient, Gabbi and her adult sister, Jada, who is in the military and was spending the night with Thompson, were the only surviving family members.

“It was awful,” Thompson said, “losing them all on the same day. We have a close family.”

The family, Thompson said, was worried over Gabbi’s condition, “but she gave us hope, too.”

The demands of follow-up care following a heart transplant are such that doctors had to be certain that Gabbi had a caregiver willing to take on those responsibilities, said Dr. Avichal Aggarwal, Gabbi’s pediatric cardiologist at the Children’s Heart Center at Batson Children’s Hospital and medical director of UMMC’s pediatric heart transplant program.

“Some of her medications have to be given every four hours around the clock,” Aggarwal said. “Missing a dose, for these patients, could be lifethreatening.”

Thompson knew what she had to do.

“I didn’t think about it,” said Thompson, 53, of the decision to become Gabbi’s guardian. “I just did it because it needed to be done.”

Born with an extraordinarily small right ventricle and abnormal coronary arteries, Gabbi’s congenital heart condition left her with a high risk of sudden death, Aggarwal said.

Shortly after her birth, Gabbi underwent surgery aimed at stabilizing her condition, said Dr. Brian Kogon, chief of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery at Batson Children’s Hospital, but the risk of sudden death remained.

“After surgery, she remained on the

heart-lung machine for several days after. Ultimately, she recovered, but she needed a new heart,” said Kogon, “and she was added to the national transplant waiting list.”

A requirement for receiving a heart transplant, said Kogon, is to have a stable support system for the care needs that will follow. Thompson, who has no biological children, stepped forward to raise her great niece, paving the way for Gabbi to receive the heart that became available to her not long after. She got a new heart March 27, 2018.

“The transplant went well and was without major complications,” Kogon said. “Her hospital stay was prolonged, only because of her young age, small size and her being so sick and debilitated at the time of transplant.”

Children with congenital heart disease can become weakened over time due to their condition.

Thompson, said Kogon, “is doing a wonderful job. Gabbi looks terrific!”

Gabbi’s heart transplant in 2018 followed four pediatric heart transplants performed at Batson in 2017. Among those patients was Jharad Faust of Meadville, who was a few days older than Gabbi when she received her lifesaving heart.

Gabbi was slightly younger than Jharad when she had her heart transplant, making her the Medical Center’s youngest heart recipient at 3 months and a day.

The five children who had heart transplants at Batson Children’s Hospital since 2017 are all in good condition, Kogon said.

“Offering a pediatric heart transplant program in Mississippi provides the complex care some children need to survive,” said Dr. William Moskowitz, chief of Pediatric Cardiology at UMMC. “Providing world-class cardiac critical care close to home is part of our mission at Batson Children’s Hospital and Children’s of Mississippi.”

The Children’s Heart Center at UMMC, in fall 2020, will be getting a new home. A seven-story pediatric expansion now under construction will include additional space for surgery, pediatric and neonatal critical care and imaging as well as clinic space for specialty care, including pediatric cardiology.

According to the registry of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, about 500 to 600 pediatric heart transplants are performed each year, representing about 12 percent of the total number of heart transplants.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one in every 7,700 babies born in the United States each year are born with pulmonary atresia, Gabbi’s congenital condition. About one in 100 babies is born with congenital heart disease.

Since her transplant, Gabbi has been

Gabbi’s next medical challenge, he said, is in swallowing. Because of her condition at birth, she required a feeding tube to get adequate nutrition. She will soon undergo tests of her swallowing ability, with the goal of one day EPISCOPAL CHURCH having the feeding tube removed.

“The Crown of Youth” Rev. Roger Collins Grace Presbyterian Church roger@gracepcabyram.net My youthfulness may not be obvious to all. I have been around a few years which have passed like a brisk wind.

That reality hits home when I am around 20 somethings. And so turning to Acts 16.1-5 where Luke tells us about the selection of Timothy for Paul’s missionary enterprise takes me back a few years to my own early ministry years. It makes me thankful for the many young believers who are stepping up to the call of Christ Jesus.

I am struck by the criterion that Paul uses and Luke records in the selection of Timothy as a coworker. There are three things evident in these few verses of sacred text. The first is that Paul is introduced to a “disciple” named Timothy. The term disciple may best be understood as Acts 6:7 indicates by emphasizing those converts who “became obedient to the faith.” Acts 14.22 fits that meaning as Paul encouraged disciples “to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.” In other words, converts to Christianity

understood discipleship was the essence of being a Christian. There are no other kind of converts. But the emphasis should not be lost. Christians are people who believe and embrace obedience to that faith. Timothy was a young man who chose to be a disciple.

The second thing Luke mentions to commend this young man Timothy are his parents. Many times young people seek to distance themselves from their parents and establish themselves independently. It is natural for a young man to do that and we understand it. Sadly, that desire is often cemented in the dysfunctional family stories that shape young lives today. Ironically, Luke highlights similar realities in Timothy’s family story. His biographical data is not complete here in Acts, but Luke’s brief account together with other scriptural details give us a glimpse of Timothy’s advantages and his disadvantages related to his family.

Timothy grew up in a religiously and culturally mixed home. His mother was Jewish and his father was Greek.

The fact that Timothy was not circumcised suggests that his father was not a god-fearing Gentile and did not go to the synagogue for religious teaching.

The whole family was evidently ostracized by the Jewish community. Such an upbringing must have afflicted Timothy in ways we can only imagine.

Luke does not refer to Timothy’s father as a convert. On the other hand, his mother believed. We know from 2 Timothy that, in fact, Timothy’s mother Eunice and his grandmother Lois be-

came exemplary Christians known for their sincere faith. Evidently Grandmother Lois and Mother Eunice believed in Christ and then led young Timothy to a sincere faith in Christ. So, an unbelieving father and a converted Jewish mother are Timothy’s back story. Yet Paul chose him to be his companion in gospel work. Timothy willingly took up that call rejoicing in the faith of his mother and suffering the unbelief of his father evident in his need for circumcision in order to do kingdom work.

The third thing Luke mentions is Timothy’s reputation. “He was well spoken of by the brothers at Lystra and Iconium.” Timothy had a track record which was known locally and at a distance. Two different churches knew him well enough to testify of his character as a believer. I think young disciples should take note of that today.

Reputation really does matter. Others should know us well and be able to testify to our usefulness in the kingdom. In other words, young people need to involve themselves in serving the local body of Christ with endurance.

Such engagement in the body indicates a church that knows your name and you know the names of believers. A fellowship where responsibility for others is embraced and willingness to take up the basin and towel is manifested in the washing of feet. You get the idea.

Timothy’s reputation was rooted in his servant heart and his servant deeds. So often, new converts want to become the teacher and the leader of the local church. We often fail to see that the way of the Master is the way of subordination through service. Timothy “was well spoken of by the brothers ...”

Young Christian converts do well to dwell on this portion of Acts. The Holy Spirit’s emphasis ought to be taken to heart. First, choose discipleship and obedience to the faith. Secondly, own your story, honor your parents and follow Christ. Third, embrace servant roles and let others see your good works so that your reputation will serve Christ’s purposes in reaching the world.

Actually, such truth not just for those starting out, it is a relevant reminder for saints with significant mileage as well.

TRIBUTE TO POLICE OFFICERS

By Carol L. Kohan St. Francis of Assisi, wanted to be a knight, but found out the hard way that it’s not too glorious. Do you have a desire in your heart to do something glorious?

Francis was known as the person who most patterned his life after Christ. Francis said, “I have come to serve, not to be served.” He freely gave to those in need from whatever he had. There are many people serving others in the world; Police Officers, Armed Forces, Mission of OSF HealthCare all serving persons with the greatest care and love.

The story below is a reminder to each and every citizen the dangers of law enforcement.

In December 2018 Two Chicago police officers were killed in the line of duty when they were struck by a passenger train while investigating a report of gunfire. Mayor Rahm Emanuel said, Eduardo Marmolejo, 36, and Conrad Gary, 31 ‘were doing their job, trying to protect the rest of us.’ Mayor Emanuel went on to say, “We lost two young men, both fathers with young families. We lost people who answered the call to make Chicago a better place.”

Following the above tragedy, Officer Samuel Jimenez, 32, a doctor and a pharmaceutical assistant, was killed by a gunman who carried out a grisly assault at a city hospital in Chicago. Attorney Kim Foxx, called the violence at the hospital senseless. Two people lost their lives doing what they love; including CPD Officer Jimenez for making the ultimate sacrifice to save the lives of others.

There is no doubt in my mind that Police Officers are heroes. Officer Jimenez ran toward danger. He ran toward the sound of gun shots. He ran selflessly into the fire.

According to Romans 13:1, Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority come from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund announced in its 2018 end of year law Enforcement fatalities Report that 144 federal, state, local, tribal and territorial officers died in the line of duty over the past year. Why do we not respect authority?

For answers about serving I looked to a story in the Washington Post about Sgt. Tom Connelly who served as a police officer opening fire on a suspect during a deadly standoff in 2016. Connelly was put on paid administrative leave as state investigators sifted through the evidence.

Of the 26 rounds officers fired Connelly didn’t even know if he hit the guy. After a two-month period the homicide charge was dropped; state investigators ruled in October 2016 the shooting was justified.

Returning to work was a glorious moment but incidents involving the death of children made Connelly fearful of having children of his own. Can we say that he was experiencing Post-traumatic stress disorder?

It seems Connelly had hidden his distress even from those closest to him. He was suffering from internal pressures but he buried his emotions while on the job.

Fourteen months later Connelly turned his weapon on himself.

Francis came home more reserved, even non-communicative. Years went by and Francis was haunted by dreams of rats crawling over him while in prison. Officer Connelly served his fellowmen; a letter was found commending his bravery during a deadly standoff at the prom shooting in Antigo, Wisconsin A former student, Jakob Wagner, opened fire on a group of teens leaving their prom.

Another item that depicts his bravery was found on his computer by his Mom. A meme he’d saved of a squad car with an officer inside stating clearly his duty: “Our job is keeping 99 percent of the population safe from the other one percent.” The problem is we have to spend half our lives with that one percent, and the better we do our job, the less the other 99 think they need us. They are clueless.”

No one realizes he goes on to say, “The only ones paying attention on the streets are the cops and the criminals.”

A retired police officer, Dave Korus explains Connelly’s darkness in his eulogy. Police work takes officers to “some of the darkest places in America.” He explains that few were darker than the scenes of officer-involved shootings, often called “critical incidents.”

Officer Connelly took his own life; experts say police officers are often adept at hiding the warning signs.

Miriam Heyman of the Ruderman Family Foundation (RFF), has studied police suicides says, “They are scared of losing their guns if they speak openly about their mental illness,” and that fear is not unfounded.”

by Connelly father if they were ashamed of Connelly for what he did? One police officer spoke for all; “This could have been any one of us.”

In the silence it was time for the last call. Langlade a dispatcher who’d gotten to know Connelly during long nights on the radio said, “Sergeant Thomas Connelly, you are now cleared to end tour,” she said, “May you rest in peace. We have the watch from here.”

The Minnesota Department of Health suggests these are the warning signs of suicide and that the more signs a person exhibits the greater the risk is:

Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain.



Talking about being a burden to others.



Increasing the use of alcohol or other drugs.

   

Acting anxious, agitated or reckless.

 

Displaying extreme mood swings.

Looking for a way to kill oneself.

Talking about feeling hopeless or having no purpose.

Sleeping too little or too much.

Withdrawing or feeling isolated.

Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge.

Police officers are screened extensively for signs of mental health issues, yet the constant, unrelenting grind of traumatic situations can affect even the

toughest officers.



Show support to your police officers first of all by obeying their warnings: Obey the law. If you’re not sure whether or not to report something, do it anyway.

If you live in the U.S. make sure you call 911.

Remember small things can be symptoms of bigger things, for example graffiti is considered a “gateway” to bigger crimes, so we need to report it. Check to see if your local law enforcement agency has any volunteer programs you can participate in. Saying “Thank You” for doing your job can make all the difference in the life of a police officer.

People who appreciate police officers’ efforts relieves the horror, stress, and exhaustion of their job. Share a positive story about a positive law enforcement experience especially on social media.

Put up signs in your community or your residence that read, “Support Your Police.” This support will also inject positive energy into the entire community.

Remember our police officers are heroes; they engage in battle just as our soldiers do, but the battle they fight is on our streets. When there is a serious crime alarm, when there is gunfire, or when there are disorder police run TO the scene, while citizens flee to safety.

Learn how to schedule exercise and healthy eating into your day to meet your weight-loss goals.

While you may realize there is no “magic bullet” when it comes to losing weight, planning ahead makes it easier to eat right and exercise. Each day, try to:  Break it up. The American Heart Association recommends getting at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise every week. For example, while roasting vegetables, add extras that you can toss on a bed of greens for lunch another day. Baking chicken breasts? Add a few extra to the pan, and shred them later in the week to add to

pasta, tacos or casseroles.

What You Can Do in Two Hours Meal prepping is an easy way to make sure healthy food is always on hand. In two hours on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, you can:  Prep a slow-cooker supper. Precook and/or portion out the ingredients you need to make a meal in a slow cooker. You can either get the slow cooker going and refrigerate or freeze your meal when it’s ready, or combine the ingredients in a zip-top bag and freeze them to use later in the week.  Make a big batch of whole grains.

Whole grains, such as brown rice and farro, provide fiber but can take up to an hour to cook. Get a pot going with enough servings to last you a few meals.  Roast a chicken. Grocery store rotisserie chickens are convenient, but many contain salty seasonings. Buy a whole chicken and roast it yourself to control sodium.  Bake a hearty breakfast. A batch of whole grain muffins, a low-fat breakfast casserole or other baked dish will make busy mornings easier for everyone.

Hinds CC honors re rees with emeritus status

RAYMOND – Hinds Community College awarded emeritus status to three retirees at the spring Convocation on Jan. 8.

They are Dr. Bobby G. Cooper of Jackson, Professor Emeritus of Music/Jubilee Singer Director Emeritus; Dr. Ben Fatherree of Clinton, Professor Emeritus of History/ College Historian and Beverly Derden Fatherree of Clinton, Professor Emeritus of English.

They join 33 other retired Hinds Community College employees who have been selected for the emeritus honor.

Cooper had 51 years of service in education with 45 years of those at Hinds. He was the longest tenured employee of the college at time of his 2018 retirement. Cooper taught music on the Utica Campus. He served as choral music director and chairman of the Humanities Division.

Cooper is best known throughout the country for his leadership as director of the Jubilee Singers, which he resurrected in 1972. The Jubilee Singers have traveled throughout the world.

Ben Fatherree has been involved in education for 48 years with 43 of those years being at Hinds where he taught history courses on the Raymond Campus and served as department chairman. In addition, he is a noted historian who has written the definitive history of Hinds Community College from its inception through the 2017 Centennial celebration.

He is an expert on civil war history, especially in the local area, and has been very involved with the Friends of Raymond organization, which has made many improvements to the Raymond Military Park, earning national attention from the National Park Service.

Beverly Derden Fatherree began her relationship with Hinds as a student. She has devoted 40 years of her life to teaching with more than 35 years of those at Hinds. She continues her service as an adjunct in the Writing Lab. She taught every English course offered, served as curriculum coordinator and was Academic Liaison for Dual Enrollment Classes taught in the area high schools.

She is well known for her “Flannery O Connor: in Her Own Words,” a dramatic monologue which she wrote.

All three were named among the 100 People Passionate about Hinds Community College during the 2017 Centennial celebration of the college. All three have also established scholarships through the Hinds Community College Foundation.

This exceptional work, painted prior to the Civil War, features a woman named Delia, who was enslaved in the William Bisland family of Mount Repose plantation in Natchez. Though the details of her life are not yet known, this program will be open to dialogue studying the importance of her presence and will encourage questions and interpretations that provide new perspectives on ancestry and history in Mississippi.

Moderated by Elizabeth Abston, Curator of American Art. Guest speakers include Tom Scarborough, a descendent of the Bisland family who will share his research and history, and Dierdre Payne, whose contemporary poetry will give new artistic perspective on Delia’s powerful presence This event is free and open to the public.

MSU wildlife professor named Taylor Chair in Ap‐ plied Big Game Research and Instruc on

STARKVILLE, Miss.—A longtime Mississippi State faculty member has been named the Taylor Chair in Applied Big Game Research and Instruction in the College of Forest Resources.

Steve Demarais, a Dale H. Arner Professor of Wildlife Ecology and Management in the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture, is a leading white-tailed deer researcher who has been with the university for more than 20 years. In that time, Demarais has published more than 130 peer-reviewed publications and led numerous master’s and doctoral students in applied research programs. In 2018, Demarais received the prestigious Deer Management Career Achievement Award from the Southeastern Deer Study Group. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to whitetailed deer ecology and management.

He also holds a research appointment in MSU’s Forest and Wildlife Research Center and co-directs the university’s Deer Ecology and Management Laboratory alongside Bronson Strickland, the St. John Family Endowed Professor of Wildlife Management. MSU’s deer lab is one of the country’s leading deer research units, developing novel tools, including three smartphone applications, to improve landowners’ ability to manage their properties for deer and other big game.

Demarais said support for applied research in big game management is vital in Mississippi, pointing out that deer hunting brings in roughly $1 billion annually to the state’s economy.

He also noted that MSU has been a research leader for this particular economic driver.

“Historically, the College of Forest Resources has been known for the applied nature of our research in big game ecology and management.” Demarais said. “This gift will further the field of ecology that applies to the management of our natural resources on the land.”

He said the honor is a recognition of the research he has made his life’s work.

“This honor is important to me because it recognizes what I have tried to do my whole career—conduct research that matters to landowners and biologists,” he said. “It’s impactful for the department because it ensures this applied research will be supported in perpetuity.”

The endowment was born out of a friendship between Patrick F. Taylor, founder and owner of Taylor Land & Cattle Company, and Harry Jacobson, professor emeritus in the College of Forest Resources. The Patrick F. Taylor Foundation is based in New Orleans, Louisiana.

“Dr. Jacobson, my predecessor, worked with the Taylors on two properties—one in Mississippi and another in New Mexico—conducting research and providing advice on how to manage those properties,” explained Demarais, who also conducted research on the Taylors’ Mississippi property. “The Taylors appreciated Dr. Jacobson’s contribution in helping them manage for big game and sought to support future research that landowners could apply to new management questions.”

George Hopper, MSU dean of the College of Forest Resources, said the gift promotes educational and environmental stewardship.

“While Phyllis and the late Patrick F. Taylor have primarily focused their philanthropic efforts on education, their impact extends far beyond the classroom,” Hopper said. “With this gift, the Patrick F. Taylor Foundation ensures the training of tomorrow’s leaders in wildlife biology while supporting meaningful research that helps landowners better manage their land for big game now and into the future.”

Demarais earned his bachelor’s in wildlife biology at the University of Massachusetts. He earned a master’s in wildlife ecology and doctoral degree in forest resources, both from Mississippi State.
