Henzel Studio is honored to have collaborated with photographer Mary McCartney on a limited-edition collection of art rugs and accompanying art pillows, encompassing highlights from McCartney’s archive selected in collaboration with the artist. For two decades, McCartney has explored the female gaze and a broad range of subjects, examining nuanced aspects of identity, vulnerability and femininity through her lens. Whether the subjects are world-famous or unknown, familiar to her or not, she has used the camera to gain a deeper understanding of their true selves. Authenticity and truthfulness are key denominators in McCartney’s search of the naturally inspiring and beautiful in humanity and nature, using the camera to develop and discover the world. What sets Mary’s work apart from her contemporaries is a raw and effortless dedication to immerse herself into the worlds of her subjects, which once captured by her intuitive eye find a way to represent and project the truthfulness of both subject and artist, reflecting an individual as opposed to style. Rather than create a composition, she seeks the composition within, portraying the character of the subject rather than defining it. McCartney’s practice was ignited by her mother Linda’s career as a world-renowned photographer and her intimate photographic recording of family life. Her work has been shown internationally and has appeared in the National Portrait Gallery and the V&A in recent years.

”Authenticity and truthfulness are key denominators in McCartney’s search of the naturally inspiring and beautiful in humanity and nature.” - Joakim Andreasson, Curator, Henzel Studio Collaborations

Titled FREEDOM, the collection features six rugs that document highlights of Mary McCartney’s career, including photographs depicting her horse Alejandro, from her book, The White Horse, her sister Stella stepping out of a car and a dancer from a project capturing dancers backstage at the Royal Ballet in London. These rugs mark Henzel Studio’s introduction of chromatic print on velour as technique, ensuring the finest quality available for photographic reproduction. A seventh hand-knotted rug design appropriates a photograph of an English Rose, which has been adapted as a design informed both by the frame of the photographic lens and the natural shape and texture of the rose petals. Accompanying the rugs is a capsule of decorative art pillows made from printed velvet. The featured photographs capture awe and beauty in the simple moments where even the mundane can reveal its eternal nature. The adapted photographs depict interactions with a frog, a snake, as well as close-ups of chests displaying cowboy-themed bedazzlement and Jenny Holzer’s iconic T-shirt featuring the text “Men Don’t Protect You Anymore”. Mary McCartney joins Henzel Studio’s program fo artists designed rugs, a roster that to date includes Richard Prince, Marilyn Minter, Nan Goldin, Lawrence Weiner, Mickalene Thomas, Ashley Bickerton and Tony Oursler, among several others.
