1ST DECADE

Henzel Studio is pleased to present this catalog in conjunction with the exhibition at PDC Design Gallery, formerly MOCA West Hollywood, celebrating the first decade of our artist-designed rug program. Showcasing over 25 rugs, it debuts new designs by John Waters, Mickalene Thomas, and Anselm Reyle, alongside collectible pieces by Verter Turroni in collaboration with Imperfetto Lab and Kalkeriet Contemporary.

Initiated in 2013 by Joakim Andreasson, together with Calle and Asa Henzel, the program debuted in 2014 with twelve rugs exhibited at Barneys New York Madison Avenue. This sitespecific installation, designed by Dennis Freedman in conjunction with Frieze Art Fair New York, received critical acclaim and was hailed as a game-changer in the dynamics between art and design. Since then, the program has traveled globally, presenting exhibitions and site-specific installations at notable venues such as MOCA Cleveland, MoMA PS1 (New York), The Goss-Michael Foundation (Dallas), Boca Raton Museum of Art, Katonah Museum of Art (New York), Saint Laurent Rive Droit (Paris), Joyce (Hong Kong), Colette Gallery (Paris), The Edition West Hollywood, Gagosian (New York), Twentieth Gallery (Los Angeles), Galleria Rossana Orlandi (Milan), and The Webster (Miami).

”This exhibition serves as a snapshot of select designs to celebrate and honor our collaborative work to date. It is not intended as a comprehensive survey or retrospective, as we are only scratching the surface of what’s to come.”

— Asa Henzel, CEO of Henzel Studio

VENUE HISTORY

The PDC Design Gallery, a 2,780-square-foot, museum-quality two-level space in West Hollywood’s Pacific Design Center Plaza, opened in March 2022. Formerly MOCA’s West Hollywood location for nearly 20 years, it hosted exhibitions featuring Rick Owens, Takashi Murakami, and others. The gallery now explores design as an extension of artistic practice, engaging renowned artists, designers, and curators.

PROGRAM ETHOS

Henzel Studio Collaborations was conceived without regard to the past state of art and design. Contrary to common associations with rugs — objects that inherently possess a strong sense of history and references to defined artistic and aesthetic movements — the purpose of this project is to provide a new and extraordinary channel for art to be made available through an alternate medium. Through a curated lens, a new context is shaped to reflect diverse dynamics of contemporary art and design.

Each phase of the program represents a different visual portrayal that transcends temporal or popular factors in this ongoing initiative. The key factor that informed the concept behind Henzel Studio Collaborations and made it possible is the artistic practice of Calle Henzel, founder and creative director of Henzel Studio. Since 1999, he has created an autodidactic operation where his work as an artist is expressed through the medium of rugs. Early in his artistic career, he turned to rugs via a path of textile experimentation that solidified his commitment to the medium. With uncompromised artistic integrity and a creative methodology, he has created his own independent and commercially viable structure. Over the years, Henzel has mastered the production of his chosen art form, utilizing techniques that have been developed and preserved by local communities in Nepal and India for centuries. Both author and producer of his designs, Henzel has elevated the implementation of art into the medium at hand and further blurred the distinction between disciplines.

The inclusion of the participating artists was, in part, inspired by Calle Henzel’s independent voice and stature in the world of art and design. Each artist was invited and selected to synergize with the next, gravitating toward artists that have each established their own rules in the art world, either by practice or by status. The result is a curation that, when combined, offers an eclectic, aesthetically broad, and authentic grouping, with an overall common denominator of openness to the cross-disciplinary practice at hand, which can also be traced in the artists’ bodies of work.

”Art rugs have been around for quite some time in various forms, and some of the most prominent artists—including Francis Bacon, Louise Bourgeois, Alexander Calder, Robert Indiana, Mike Kelley, Ellsworth Kelly, Fernand Léger, Roy Lichtenstein, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol—have all turned to the medium at some point in their oeuvre. However, rather than looking back, we aim to encapsulate facets of contemporary art and work with a curated group of artists who simultaneously express their ethos within a broad yet defined scope. Having now forty leading contemporary artists collaborate in this capacity makes Henzel Studio Collaborations an unprecedented program, even though the artisan practices remind us that the possibility has always been there. The artists are all groundbreaking and leading forces within their respective fields and media, ranging from sculpture, drawing, collage, photography, installations, reliefs, and video art. Their mark has not only been honored and highlighted at leading galleries and institutions worldwide but also widely documented and manifested as a mirror of cultural movements. For example, there’s Scott Campbell’s autonomous voice as both a tattoo and fine artist; Linder’s uncompromising work that helped shape the aesthetic of punk; Robert Knoke’s redefining of portraiture for the 21st century; Richard Prince’s enthralling methods of re-appropriation; Helmut Lang’s sculptural exploration beyond the human form; and Leo Gabin spearheading the immersion of online user-generated content into art. Free to disregard design movements and related principles and rules, the featured artists were invited to freely and seamlessly translate their work and artistic ethos into the medium at hand, exploring shape, volume, and finishings, where practicality was secondary to concept. The creative brief allowed the artists to embrace the outcome as part of their body of work. Whether these rugs are hung on a wall or displayed on the floor, the chosen context will be as subjective as the question of applied versus fine art — a distinction we encourage and hope will remain.”

— Joakim Andreasson, Curator, Henzel Studio Collaborations

This landmark exhibition commemorates a decade of pioneering artist-designed rugs, showcasing over 25 distinctive pieces available for acquisition by collectors, architects, interior designers, and connoisseurs. Each rug exemplifies the fusion of contemporary art with traditional craftsmanship, reflecting the innovative spirit that has defined this collection over the past ten years.

In addition to the rug collection, the exhibition showcases a curated selection of collectible design pieces by Italian artist Verter Turroni, produced by his studio Imperfetto Lab. Turroni’s work is renowned for its unique synthesis of nature and artifice, creating objects with a natural yet illusory appearance. His designs often draw inspiration from archetypal forms such as trunks, pebbles, and shells, resulting in pieces that are both timeless and evocative. Each item is meticulously handcrafted, ensuring a unique identity and lasting presence.

This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to acquire exceptional pieces that blur the boundaries between art and design, reflecting a decade of innovation and collaboration in the field.

HENZEL STUDIO

Henzel Studio, established in 1999, is a Swedish luxury rug manufacturer and publisher that seamlessly blends art and craftsmanship. The studio’s ethos is rooted in the artistic practice of founder and creative director Calle Henzel, who has translated his background in painting and collage into the medium of rug design. This approach has positioned Henzel Studio as one of the most progressive luxury rug brands globally. Central to Henzel Studio’s identity is its commitment to artisanal production methods that date back thousands of years. Each rug undergoes a meticulous twelve-step handmade process, resulting in unique works of art. Hand-knotted with 150 knots per square inch, these rugs can take up to seven months to produce, reflecting the dedication to quality and craftsmanship. Henzel Studio’s collaborations extend to over 30 renowned artists and estates, including The Andy Warhol Foundation, Nan Goldin, Marilyn Minter, Mickalene Thomas, Lawrence Weiner, Vanessa Beecroft, and Richard Prince. These partnerships allow artists to freely translate their visual language into the medium of rugs, challenging traditional design conventions and blurring the lines between art and design. The studio’s innovative approach has led to exhibitions at prestigious venues such as MoMA PS1 in New York, MOCA in Los Angeles, Frieze in Hong Kong, The Broad in Los Angeles, and Saint Laurent Rive Droite in Paris, among others. Through these endeavors, Henzel Studio continues to redefine luxury rug design, creating pieces that are both visually captivating and conceptually profound.

CALLE HENZEL

Calle Henzel, a multidisciplinary contemporary artist, seamlessly integrates painting, collage, and photomontage into the realm of textile design. His early explorations with textiles evolved into an extensive series of rug designs that transcend traditional craftsmanship, merging artisanal techniques with contemporary artistic expression. Henzel’s practice is defined by a dynamic interplay between abstraction and figuration, where intuition, chance, and material experimentation converge to create works that are both visually compelling and conceptually rich.

For over three decades, Henzel has maintained an independent approach to his practice, allowing for uncompromised artistic freedom. This autonomy has fostered collaborations with more than 30 internationally renowned artists and estates, further cementing his status as a leading figure in contemporary textile art. His works have been exhibited globally, including presentations at The Goss-Michael Foundation (Dallas), The New (Los Angeles), and Colette Gallery (Paris). His pieces have also been featured in museum exhibitions at MOCA Cleveland, the Katonah Museum of Art (New York), and the Boca Raton Museum of Art (Florida), among other institutions.

Henzel’s approach challenges conventional notions of form, texture, and surface composition. Drawing inspiration from natural erosion, he incorporates processes such as vintage treatments to blur the boundaries between art and design. A pioneer of free-form, organic-shaped rugs, his award-winning Frozen Cut collections are widely recognized for their radical departure from traditional rug-making aesthetics. His groundbreaking innovations stem from a decade-long scientific experiment in which textiles were exposed to the extreme environmental conditions of Northern Sweden. This rigorous study allowed him to observe the transformative effects of natural forces—erosion, thawing snow, and seasonal germination—translating these insights into intricate, hand-knotted designs crafted using centuries-old artisanal techniques.

Through his continued exploration of materiality and process, Calle Henzel redefines the intersection of fine art and textile design, creating works that not only challenge historical conventions but also expand the possibilities of contemporary visual culture.

JOAKIM ANDREASSON

Joakim Andreasson is a creative director, curator and catalyst of creative projects in the commercial sphere. Andreasson founded CULTUREEDIT in 2014, with the mission to guide artists and brands through the creative and marketing processes involved in the convergence of culture and commerce. He oversaw Mr. Helmut Lang’s studio and transition from fashion designer to artist from 2005-2021. In 2012, Andreasson created the most notable program of artist designed rugs with Henzel Studio, the world’s leading publisher of art carpets, which he curates and oversees. From 2013, Andreasson managed and served as creative director of all commercial and licensing activities of Tom of Finland Foundation for over a decade. In 2017 he created a retail and gallery arm of CULTUREEDIT, with a physical presence in Hollywood. He has organized and curated solo exhibitions with artists that include Mel Odom, Jack Pierson, Slava Mogutin, Bruce LaBruce, Pol Anglada, Silvia Prada, Robert Knoke, Patrick Church, Benjamin Fredrickson, Jwan Yosef, Tom of Finland Foundation and The Andy Warhol Foundation for The Visual Arts, among others.

VERTER TURRONI

The exhibition Henzel Studio Collaborations 1st Decade is accompanied by a curated selection of collectible designs by Verter Turroni, realized in collaboration with Imperfettolab and Kalkeriet Contemporary. Imperfettolab, founded by Verter Turroni and Emanuela Ravelli in 1992, bridges art and design with studios in Longiano and Milan, Italy. It operates as an experimental laboratory, manufacturing workshop, and contemporary gallery where materials and ideas merge to create sculptural works that redefine functional art. Central to their practice is fiberglass, a material celebrated for its strength and versatility. Turroni and his team transform it into organic, dreamlike forms that blend raw textures with refined geometries. Each handmade piece is carefully sanded, painted, and polished, turning functional furniture into collectible art. Imperfettolab also curates exhibitions, performances, and experimental projects, creating a space where contemporary art and design intersect. Their work is more than furniture — it’s a narrative of contrasts, a celebration of craftsmanship, and a reimagining of material possibilities.

KALKERIET CONTEMPORARY

Kalkeriet Contemporary embodies a progressive and pioneering spirit, blending bold hybrid approaches with intimate, curated presentations of fine art, collectible works, and contemporary design. It serves as a destination for contemporary craftsmanship, showcasing a refined selection of fine art, photography, editions, and design by leading and emerging international artists, artists’ estates, and designers. Catering to a global community of collectors, architects, interior designers, private clients, and enthusiasts, Kalkeriet is a hub for those passionate about the crafted object and innovative creations.
