THE MIND-BENDING THEATRE ODYSSEY IN ORWELL’S SHADOW

London

2023.8-2023.11

Individual Work

In a realm echoing the dystopian echoes of Orwell’s “1984,” there stands a structure, not merely architectural, but avessel of narrative immersion. This edifice, born from the pages of a tale where the upper echelons, under Big Brother’s omnipresent gaze, weave and reweave the tapestry of history, serves as a theater of the mind. Within its walls, space becomes an instrument, a conductor of auditory and visual symphonies that guide the spectator through a labyrinthine journey. Here, the audience is not just a passive observer but a participant, prompted to ponder, to question, not just the unfolding drama but the very essence of space and story intertwined. This building, a nexus of Orwellian thought and architectural artistry, invites a spontaneous introspection into the depths of the narrative and the self.

"You are a co-author with me, the main protagonist. What you see is quite up to you."
—— Olafur Eliasson

Fragment 1:

The design of the theatre's façade uses camouflage to hide the building from the street, so the façade is modelled on the buildings around the site and the British Library next door. The windows and roof of a traditional English red brick building are used and six rows of mirrors are incorporated into the façade to reflect the surrounding street. The shape of the mirror shelves references the design of the window shelves in the British Library.

The rhyme "Oranges and Lemons" mentions many churches. Winston is obsessed with knowing the full content of the rhyme because these churches belong to the past and are frozen history. The site of the building was chosen to be St Pancras, another church mentioned in the text, and to the north of it was the store that had led Winston step by step back to the 'right way'.

Shelving is an essential presence in a shop. Shelves come in many forms, and the design of this space draws on a variety of different shelving forms to produce the final curved wraparound shelves that frame the entire space.

How to manipulate the audience:

The design of the pub is based on the traditional church crypts of the last century in England, with their regular vaulted ceilings.1984 The original pub was a very old and unrecognised site, similar in nature to a crypt.

The bells representing time are confusing throughout the building, and people usually judge the passage of time by the gap between the two bells. For example, if the two chimes are relatively close to each other it means that the audience needs to pick up the pace!!

When Winston first visits the room above the shop, he notices a picture of a building that used to be St. Clement’s Church. He recognizes the building but doesn’t know that it was once a church before it was bombed. He reflects on the fact that the Party leaders have even controlled the architecture of the city to reflect their own version of history. However, what remains of the church gives a hint of what the past was really like.

From one ghostly steeple after another he seemed to hear them pealing forth. Yet so far as he could remember he had never in real life heard church bells ringing.

The tampering and disagreement with the time of the different rooms metaphorically represent different versions of history.

The time in the project represented by the bells is misplaced

The entrance corridor is designed with a ramp and accelerated perspective. The accelerated design gives the illusion of a deeper space than the real one. And walking on the ramp, one cannot be as comfortable as when walking on the flat ground. This will reduce people's attention to external things and focus more on the space itself.

The Legacy Atrium

Frankfurt

2024.2-2024.5

Individual Work

The museum is envisioned by this architectural project as a flowing river, a dynamic conduit that allows visitors to explore the depths of history. A trip along this meandering stream is orchestrated by the space's design, while each exhibit appears as a unique stone, a physical relic of the past. A smooth narrative that weaves together different points in time leads visitors across the landscape, promoting reflection and a sense of connection to the past. The experience is interwoven with deliberate pauses that encourage introspection and facilitate the assimilation of the several tales it contains. Our goal with this design is to create an immersive space that respects time's flow and enhances the visitor's perception of their surroundings.

Interior Perspective

The precise, unadorned linework of the axonometric drawing conveys the essence of the museum's design. The composition highlights the interaction of volumes, spatial relationships, and structural clarity when all other distractions are removed.

Physical Model

Enjoy panoramic views as natural light pours in through large floor-to-ceiling windows. The café stretches into an artificial natural landscape, a calm fusion of design and nurtured peace, amid the soft murmur of conversation.

The museum's multi-layered essence is revealed when you stand at the terrace doorway. A silent conversation between levels is provided by views of life below—visitors strolling and exhibits developing—through the open space of the atrium.

A free flow—exhibition platforms set up with an uncontrolled rhythm—can be found at the center of the museum. Here, exploration happens naturally without following set routes, allowing each guest to design their own path.

A wonderful surprise awaits at the top of the stairs: elaborate flower tiles lit by sunshine streamed via overhead skylights. Every stride is transformed into a moment of light and design by the dancing shadows that create transient patterns.

Environment Strategy

By fusing traditional materials with contemporary engineering methods, the structure uses a traditional brick and mortar construction process. Sturdy brick is used to carefully construct the vertical load-bearing components, such as walls and columns, guaranteeing strong support and stability. In addition to offering structural stability, these brick elements add to the building's visual appeal by showcasing a classic architectural design.

Aqua Nexus

Birkenhead

2024.8-2024.11

Individual Work

Specifically for prisoners who have committed nonsevere cybercrimes, this jail experiment, called Aqua Nexus, is situated by the sea in Birkenhead, UK. The project's main idea is to use immersive educational experiences and creative spatial design to help reintegrate convicts into society. The building is half underwater, and as the tides change, so does its physical presence, signifying the inmates' rebirth and personal metamorphosis. Inmates can study technical skills and undergo psychological and moral reconstruction in the education section, which is submerged beneath the water's surface and uses virtual reality technology to create immersive learning settings. By separating from the punishing nature of conventional prisons, this project hopes to inspire hope and improvement in society.

The location, which is by the water in Birkenhead, offers a distinctive coastal setting. To make sure the design adapts well to its surroundings, the analysis takes into account factors including population density, sunshine exposure, and site accessibility. Because the sea's closeness affects the site's characteristics and necessitates the careful integration of partially submerged structures for durability and operation, tidal variations were a major concern.

Crime Rate Analysis

Data Source: https://crimerate.co.uk/merseyside/liverpool

Birkenhead has a relatively high crime rate compared to other areas in the UK. In recent data (October 2023 - September 2024), the city recorded 122.9 crimes per 1,000 people. Violent crime is the most prevalent, accounting for around 42% of all crimes, and the area experiences a particularly high rate of drug-related offenses, which are significantly above the national average. Crimes like public disorder and criminal damage are also common, with public order offenses marking a notably high rate.

The conceptual idea for the education sector, which uses VR technology to aid convict learning and rehabilitation, is embodied in this collage. The abstract composition shows how technology and place may combine to create immersive experiences, demonstrating the transforming power of virtual environments. It emphasizes education as a means of reintegration and communicates the fusion of creativity and purpose.

Accommodation Area

The purpose of the living area is to give prisoners a place to live. It provides essential amenities while upholding safe bounds, and it is situated at the upper levels to prevent tidal impacts. The design strikes a balance between seclusion and surveillance, encouraging a humane yet orderly living space.

Activity Area

Inmates can participate in recreational and physical activities in this area's regulated setting. The activity area, which is separate from the education part, provides a place for interaction and physical exercise, promoting mental and physical health.

Education Area

The most unique feature of the prison is its underwater education area, which uses virtual reality technology to immerse offenders in lifechanging educational opportunities. This area is devoted to rehabilitation using personalized virtual worlds that promote social reintegration and skill development.

Cylindrical towers with accessible ladders serve as the supporting components for the aerial corridors. Three platforms that are incorporated at varying heights offer specific areas for maintenance tasks.

Because of its curving roof, the guards' hallway has a more open and efficient layout. The arched construction conveys a feeling of comfort and flow while offering a unique and useful pathway that is only available to jail employees.

The aerial corridors serve as vital circulation channels throughout the complex and are designed as separate pathways for guards and convicts. Because of their elevation above the main grounds, these lanes facilitate more efficient mobility while preserving segregation and reducing encounters between guards and prisoners, promoting both operational security and spatial clarity.

As a focal point for observation, the watchtower keeps an eye on the surroundings, both within and out. Strategically placed, it guarantees security and makes it easier to respond quickly to any emergency, signifying the facility's dedication to safety and order.

Watchtower
Combining practicality and simplicity, the central watchtower is a cylinder building that encloses a lighthouse-like core. While the inner core towers as a beacon of control and observation, anchoring the entire complex, the clean, unadorned exterior highlights power.
Six paired cylindrical cylinders arranged in a 2x6 grid make up the activity area. This modular layout offers flexible places for a multitude of activities while combining repetition and balance to create a rhythmic pattern. Eight identical cubic structures, each with upper and lower portions, make up the education zone. Each cube has skylights at the top that let in natural light while allowing for unobstructed view from the watchtowers. In addition to balancing utility with a regulated environment for monitoring and instruction, the uniform design guarantees a unified appearance.
The rectangular, fully glass-enclosed inmate aerial corridor provides a safe and regulated means of transportation between buildings. The transparent design emphasizes safety and order by providing visibility while keeping a clear barrier from the outside world.
Simple rectangular blocks with a minimalist, unadorned style make up the living area. Functionality is reflected in the simple geometry, which puts utility above beauty.
The regular watchtowers are simple lighthouse-like structures, lacking the cylindrical enclosure of the central tower. Three of these towers are strategically placed throughout the complex, ensuring comprehensive surveillance of every corner.

4 Market of Reminiscence

2024.11-2025.1

Individual Work

The Market of Reminiscence honors the preservation of cultural memory and the peaceful coexistence of open community spaces. The building's outside spaces and semi-open lower floors create a versatile marketplace that encourages dynamic public engagement and adaptable use. Above, the enclosed archive provides a peaceful haven in the middle of the busy bustle, protecting the information and stories of the past. A story of continuity is embodied by this smooth blending of enclosure and openness, which ties the echoes of the past with the vitality of modern life.

The idea for a market, community center, and archive emerges in this atmosphere. By integrating these several purposes, the design aims to revitalize the neighborhood and create a vibrant center that not only maintains the site's historical significance but also promotes social interaction and economic development. Together, the market and the archive contribute to the area's rehabilitation and make sure it continues to be an important and relevant component of the city's changing urban scene. The market contributes a commercial vibrancy, while the archive preserves local history.

The region surrounding the site has a rich history of innovative and contentious architectural interventions, such as the Joke Shop, the controversial Moorfields Subway Station, and the dynamic art installation with spinning floors. These formerly renowned buildings generated intense discussions and had a long-lasting effect on the city's urban fabric. But as time has gone on, the area's bustle has decreased, and there is a growing desire to revitalize it. The neighborhood is demanding that this area be reinvented in a way that will re-engage the people and bring back its cultural energy.

Future Development

The area is part of Liverpool’s urban regeneration, especially around the Baltic Triangle and Knowledge Quarter. Future developments could bring more residents, businesses, and cultural spaces, creating opportunities for your project to contribute to local growth.

Surrounding Environment

The area features a blend of commercial and residential buildings, with some underused spaces. It's an evolving area that benefits from proximity to Liverpool ONE and the Cavern Quarter, which attracts foot traffic.

Transport and Accessibility

The site is well-connected, located near Moorfields Station with easy access to train, bus, and cycle paths. The station links to key parts of the city and beyond, ensuring good accessibility for future visitors.

The surrounding areas are shifting towards a more mixed-use environment, combining business, leisure, and residential spaces. This creates an opportunity to blend market activities with cultural and community functions, tapping into the evolving social dynamics of the area. Market and Social Activity

Building Generation

Spatial Functional Analysis Physical Model

Structural Support

The building's support structure is a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics. Diagonal bracing elements form a rhythmic lattice, providing stability while adding a bold architectural expression. These structures not only bear the weight but also create dynamic visual patterns, seamlessly integrating strength with beauty.

Archives

This archive is an abstract interplay of curved spaces, designed to evoke intimacy and solitude. Each volume is a cocoon, offering a sanctuary for quiet reflection and a tactile connection to the treasures it houses. The design celebrates fluidity, creating a spatial journey that blurs boundaries between architecture and emotion.

Circulation

The building’s circulation is centered around a vertical core, featuring a central lift and a series of stairs that guide movement through the space. The lift offers quick, efficient access to all levels, while the stairs encourage a more tactile, contemplative journey through the building. Together, they create a harmonious flow, balancing functionality with the experience of the architectural environment.

The model demonstrates the building's extensive use of curved surfaces, which not only improves the building's visual attractiveness but also gives the spatial arrangement flexibility and flow. Viewers may easily comprehend the linkages and interactions between different functional areas because to the cross-sectional design, which emphasizes the spatial relationships inside the building. Furthermore, the openings in the model allow light to enter, highlighting the architecture's dynamic qualities and the incorporation of natural components.

This model represents a simplified version of the design proposal, crafted using 3D printing technology to cleverly divide the building into two halves for easy observation of its cross-section.
