Painting is my freedom. My supreme form of personal expression.
It’s not just a practice, it’s a purpose, driven by a deeply engrained need to create. As essential to me as breathing, eating, or sleeping. The need to create is as imperative to my survival and my soul.
When I’m not painting, I’m drawing, writing, building, designing, or simply thinking with purpose and intent. But always creating. Always making.
I’m as much a storyteller as I am a painter or designer. I tell stories grounded in personal experience and intimacy, veiled in metaphor, abstraction and colour. And painting is just one of the outlets I use to tell and share those stories.
Since childhood, I’ve been drawn to the paint-pots and brushes. It began as a connection with my father, a fellow artist, and evolved into something tribal and generational. A craft I now pass down and share with my own children.
Though I paint from within, I paint to share. Even my Veiled series of works are created with someone else in mind. There’s always at least one viewer I hope to share with.
And as an artist and designer, I carry a deep sense of responsibility, not just to create for myself, but to contribute meaningfully to the world around me. A motif that flows far and wide through everything I do, from art to design to the spaces in-between.
For all I am is but time and energy, and I intend to use it.

The Dance depicts the harvest and celebration of life.
A big, beautiful, magnificent dance.
Bon Voyage is not a goodbye, but a celebration of the things we take with us. It is a Harvest of the seasons. Of the triumphs, loves, heartaches, friendships, kinship and selfhood.
I really love the ideas of driftwood. Where once something was connected by first growths and rooted to its origin. Becoming untethered, wandered, lost and swept away on one tide and to arrive in a new place on another. To be found, picked up, embraced and made or added to something beautiful and new.
... a beautiful metaphor, of sorts.
There is a song of beauty and honesty in long grass. Each strand its own delicate individuality of natural elegance and perfect flaws. It is as beautiful golden and weathered in the Autumn, as it is green and lush in the Spring. It stands on its own. And sometimes if it’s lucky it will intertwine with another. And be it through a Winter storm or a soft Summer breeze, it will forever sway and roll in time with its kin.
I started developing my ‘Long Grass’ series in 2016, and most of my works since have grown from there.
The painted framed borders in my 33 Collection are borrowed from my father’s own works, reinterpreted to highlight the tension between truth and hidden truth in every story.
A storyteller always frames their tale. No matter how honest or sincere, what you receive is never the full, untouched, unedited version.

Charlie Ryan is a contemporary artist and designer planted in the hinterland of the Mornington Peninsula, Australia.
His practice explores the unbounded connection between nature, selfhood, kinship, and community, expressed through formed natural abstract works, veiled as metaphors for lived experience.
A lifelong artist, Charlie was introduced to painting at a young age by his father and fellow artist, Gee (Gerald) Ryan, who instilled in him a deep respect for classical techniques and a lasting love of colour.
He developed his creative foundations at the Brighton Bay Art, Design and Photography Program in Melbourne, and continued his studies at the Arts Academy at the University of Ballarat.
Charlie’s work has been exhibited in both solo and group shows, and is held in private collections across Australia and internationally.
Now a proud father of three, Charlie often paints alongside his children, carrying forward the creative spirit and teachings passed down by his own father.
