I started working at CBC Radio as an intern nearly 20 years ago. I was straight out of journalism school and was assigned to a program called This Morning. And Talin was assigned as my mentor. Poor Talin. She got the raw end of the deal. I was shy, inexperienced and lacking in confidence and I suspect – with good reason – that Talin never thought I'd last in the business.

But I was lucky. I had Talin's example to follow. She was tough, but that was a good thing. She wasn't afraid to give honest feedback, which was important if I was going to be a decent journalist. And I sat beside her as she chased her stories. She was undoubtedly tenacious, but she was always respectful. And it was good to watch and listen as she worked hard to make a story work even if the guest was initially reluctant. And in story meetings Talin would speak up and say things that needed saying, but that others may have been too timid to raise. She taught me that you could have respectful, adult conversations because what mattered most was making great radio. It wasn't about you, it was about what was best for the show.

The show we worked on was being cancelled, which wasn't the greatest start to a career in radio.

Those days were tough. But Talin showed class, and hope, and she had the ovaries to venture out and try new things. It gave me hope too. Because there were many more tough days ahead, but they would be faced head on. And I had the confidence to stick up for myself, thanks to Talin's example.

I also worked with Karen Levine, who is good friends with Talin. And seeing the two of them, and the relationship they'd formed through work, made me realize the importance of having women in the office who have your back. And also that work could be fun. Let's just admit it — Talin has a great laugh and a great smile and it always perks me up when she's having a good time.

The last time I saw Talin at work was at the puzzle table. Bit by bit, piece by piece, those puzzles got done. The puzzle of a peacock took us FOREVER, but I was with Talin at the table when we finally finished it. Teamwork! That's the best lesson I learned from Talin. She was always willing to help, no matter how hopeless I may have seemed. It's hard to express what Talin has meant to me and my career, but for her help (and patience) I will be forever grateful.

WILLY BARTH Talin was more than just a colleague at work — she would give you the shirt off her back if you needed it. I ran into her at the Doctor's office in Toronto — after the Doctor told me I had a major complication in my pregnancy and had to get to the hospital. She took me home to my partner and really looked after me. My son Leo is 22 on September 2nd. He was born safe and sound at Mount Sinai the next morning. Talin bought him a lovely soft toy that we still have to this day.

Talin's sense of fun always made her a treat to work with. Enjoy your muchdeserved retirement — I'm sure it will be full of good times.

I've known Talin for forty plus years and she has always been a feisty feminist warrior!

I first met her in residence at Carleton University where she was already pushing back at the “boy's club.” Many years later I re-met her when she was a producer at Morningside, still challenging authority while inventing great panels like “Kierans Camp and Lewis."

It was Talin who taught me an important producer lesson. I was distraught about some piece I was producing for Gzowski and she stopped on the stairs in the old radio building to give me this advice: "It's important, but it's not brain surgery, nobody will die." I've held onto that for all my years at the CBC. Even now I am impressed, and even a little intimidated, by this woman beside whom I have worked for many years. She's a whirling dervish, and when she's on a story there's no better researcher, no better chaser!

So, my friend, we've shared laughs and confidences and tears and strength over the decades, and now we can each turn our attention to producing something new — our next chapters!

I will miss you.

You have been an inspiration to me for years, dare I say decades. From your work as Citizen Talin, to your stories both personal and political on The Sunday Edition, to your feisty approach to dealing with union issues, you have always been a beautiful blend of wisdom and wit, challenge and hug.

FORMER MORNINGSIDE COLLEAGUE (TOO LONG AGO TO ADMIT).

Talin Vartanian is the most tenacious chase producer in CBC Radio. Period.

She is like the Great White shark which smells chum in the water a mile away. And like the shark she never stops moving, never stays in place. She will not take no for an answer.

She is unfamiliar with the phrase "not possible."

Legions of PR flacks, literary agents, executive assistants, consultants, pundits and professors have succumbed to her intense combination of cajolery, flattery and dark threats.

To watch her work the phone and email is like watching a gifted surgeon wield the scalpel.

I have never asked her to get a sitting Pope or The Queen or a werewolf. I have the feeling she would do it or die trying.

Her entire career speaks to her diligence in and her commitment to public broadcasting in general and radio in particular.

Her retirement makes the world a little safer for the hacks, the flacks, the time servers, the twisters, the spinners. What a pity.

MICHAEL ENRIGHT

Dear Talin, I hate farewell parties and I hate Zoom even more but I do love you.

I’m looking for a metaphor that describes how I see your departure from CBC Radio.

Maybe when Gretzky left the Oilers but that really doesn’t do it so I will just say this, you brought so much. Passion, ideas and as Max Allen used to say, you brought truth to power.

So many times, at meetings when I was some kind of manager and you raised your hand to ask a question or didn’t raise your hand, one word flew into my mind, "SHIT," followed by "not again."

The place will miss you but you have got to find someplace where you can continue to sparkle whether the slugs like it or not.

ALEX FRAME

Talin, Like many people, I suspect, I knew you before I met you, or at least I knew OF you. That was back in 2002. I was in Jerusalem, pregnant, and negotiating a return to Canada and the CBC. Someone had mentioned to me this little experiment that was going on called Canada Reads and like many people I thought: “how brilliant. I wonder who came up with that?”

In truth, it wasn’t until many years later that you casually revealed that the brilliant one was you. By that time, I had known you for a while, worked with you occasionally — enough to know that brilliance was just part of the everyday package named Talin Vartanian. It all made perfect sense.

I’ve never worked with a producer anywhere, in any medium that seemed to find so much joy in what they did. Whether in the daily slog at AIH or the weekly grind that Sunday Edition can be, you always had that glint in your eye that told me you had a good one up your sleeve and couldn’t wait to get it to air. Sometimes it was just a good yarn, sometimes it was a riveting personal story but often (and God bless you for this) the glint was because you were on to a story or a person who was going to “shake things up a bit.” And boy did you know how to do that.

It didn’t always make you the most popular employee with the managers (but, really, who cares about them?) It did make you a bloody good journalist and there are generations of listeners, hosts (including guest hosts) and colleagues who benefited from your sharp instincts, your original takes and your determination to be anything but repetitive or, worse, boring.

The list of examples is long so suffice it to say that for forty years you have delivered, faithfully, on all of that. And still managed to be one of the most generous and encouraging people I know. It’s hard to imagine what Talin 2.0 is going to look like but I hope she’s every bit as feisty and provocative, brilliant and inspiring as the one I and so many others have had the privilege of working with. I also hope that somewhere in the wings some younger version of you has been watching and taking notes. The CBC needs her or him or they now more than ever. You blazed the path. Let’s hope there are those worthy enough to follow it.

My very best to you Talin, with so many thanks for all you have done.

Talin, I think you've done a fantastic job over the last few decades with the CBC, despite what Pauline, Donya and Cate say.

I remember my first day at The Sunday Edition way back in December (I'm not sure if your institutional memory even goes back that far!), being so nervous to start working on my favourite CBC show...you, Donya and Pauline invited me to lunch and I thought: "We're allowed to go for lunch?"

Because of you, I've learned how to stick up for myself in this behemoth corporation that swallows up us casuals and can make us think we don't have much value.

I have learned so much from your brutal copy-editing and high editorial standards, values I will take with me in my next steps at the CBC. We're losing a giant, but I'll (virtually) raise a toast to all the sycophants you've grilled, the feathers you've ruffled and pranks you've pulled!

I have known you for many years and I join what I know is a resounding chorus...you are a great producer, an incredible journalist and a woman of great passion and conviction. And when you take anything on — a story, a project — you are all in and you get it done.

Your energy is awesome. I respect and admire and like you. Lots. Being in management made things tricky. But I have to say I always valued your honesty with me. Hell, we both know I often agreed with you. You made me think.

You are going to love so-called retirement Talin...and I am shaking my head.

The one thing you will never be, is retiring! Oh, and another thing about you Talin? You possess one of my favourite smiles. It lights up your whole face and makes everyone around you feel good.

Talin dear Talin, I am staring at a white screen wondering how to start this damn thing, how to write this green (for you broadcast-babies, a green was named after a six-sheet pad of paper with carbon paper in between, the green coloured one went to the host, the others to producers, technicians etc.)

What to say about Citizen Talin who carries public broadcasting in her soul. So what does that really mean? Well if you are a feminist-humanist-egalitarian-compassion-rich-kick-ass-writer like Talin it means her fellow Canadians will hear each other’s stories so democracy deepens.

Well that was a clumsy sentence and rather embarrassing as Talin would never have let it pass in one of her beautifully crafted intros.

Thousand, thousands of the damn things, her words read by the best hosts the CBC ever had. She made them sound smarter than they ever were.

The woman knows her way around a sentence: You want truth, you want logic, you want efficiency, and you want a bit of snap go no further, for 43 years Talin was at your service.

Ahhh yes 1977. Fleetwood Mac was on every radio. (continued on next page)

DAVID GUTNICK

Apple Computers was founded.

The rings around Uranus were discovered. (Ask Talin for the correct pronunciation as to not have a host make an embarrassing on-air slip up.)

And in 1977 Talin walked into the CBC and money from Canadian taxpayers started flowing into her pockets.

So here is one story from those four decades: Talin is working for As It Happens. The CBC has had a major labour dispute. Talin wants the CBC Vice-President on the air to answer tough questions.

The Vice-President’s assistant says yes, the VP will come to studio for the interview to give the CBC management position. Nope, he will do the interview by phone like everyone else, says Talin.

No says the flack, the VP is special and he will be in studio. Talin digs in her heels, it will be on the phone or there will be no interview.

That evening the VP is on the phone. Gutsy our Talin.

So, I was wondering how to start this thing, now how to end it: a quick search and bingo.

What does the name Talin mean in Armenian? Well it is an Armenian city. It also means "claw."

But this nails it: “People with this name are presumed to be balanced and receptive to cooperation. They are the ideal persons for partnership and always look for peace. It is important and imperative for them to learn how to speak up, or they may be taken advantage of.”

Enough said.

Talin, The very moniker of my Gmail account was bestowed on me by you when I worked with you at Canada Reads, on seasons two and three. You called me hurricanesal and it stuck. I have so many things to be grateful to you for: you were my boss when I got unexpectedly pregnant, and also hired me back when I was suffering post-partum depression, which was one of the most generous and feminist things you could ever have done. You’ve been a constant source of support, solidarity, mentorship and friendship, a fierce feminist ally, a terrifying but brilliant editor (omg — ever since, no one's edits of any of my written work could hurt my feelings, you inured me for life), and an honest and ethical journalist whose public service I have admired endlessly. Talin, you’re one of the people in my life I'm proudest to call a friend, such a force for intelligent, pluralistic, democratic and principled leadership and a super-fun dinner date to boot! The CBC was incredibly fortunate to have your commitment and talents for over four decades as you informed, entertained, and challenged us all to be better in our work and better humans to each other. Let's celebrate you Talin!

Ah, Talin, what can I say? She never called me by my proper first name, Richard. Instead she nicknamed me Ricky. When I told her that Ricky was the name of my childhood parakeet, she said “even better!” So, from that day on, for years and through many, snatched CBC conversations, she always called me “Ricky,” not without a mischievous twinkle in her eye. That’s a name and a look I will always treasure.

RICHARD HANDLER

It's hard to think of a radio colleague that has been more dedicated to Canadian Public Broadcasting than Talin. I know rising to her expectations made me a better researcher. Her high standard of service and imagination (always to a deadline) is exemplary. Talin's a big part of our collective radio story. Proud company.

DEBRA HAYES Talin is one of those people you never forget. I left CBC eight years ago. The further CBC is behind you, there are a few people whose memory happily lingers. Talin is one of them. The place is special because of people like her. Dedicated. Smart. Full of life and purpose and a willingness to laugh at life when it throws you a curve. I don't remember any lawsuits against her that I had to resolve, though. Perhaps it's because she always took my advice. Who couldn't feel good about someone like that! I wish her well in her future pursuits. Her talents will take her wherever she wants to go. In the meantime, thanks, Talin, for being there.

Dear Talin, Like so many of the other people you’ve mentored, I was awed and slightly terrified when I first met you. You are such a force of nature, in the best way possible, and I wanted to live up to the sky-high standards you set. I quickly learned what an incredible friend and surrogate mom you are. I still remember my first summer on TSE — when I was dazed from a breakup and a cross-country move. Even though you barely knew me, when you saw I was struggling, you leapt into action, found me the perfect new kitchen table, and drove me across town to pick it up. That was the day I knew I had found a true friend, one I could trust absolutely.

Over the last five years, you’ve taught me assertiveness, tenaciousness, and courage. Sitting next to you at work has been a master class in chasing and radio production. Though I’m not scared of you anymore (you’re a pussy cat, after all!) my awe for you has only grown.

You are endlessly creative, whip-smart, hilarious, caring and deeply committed to public broadcasting. From you, I’ve learned how to fight the good fight when it matters — but also, how to ease up and worry less when it doesn’t matter. I can’t thank you enough for all the times you’ve talked me down, cheered me on or given me the perfect advice to strengthen my spine as I walked into a difficult conversation. PAULINE HOLDSWORTH

Your work as a union steward — and as a fierce ally in the fight for temp rights — has made you a legend among so many temps and workers on the floor, and it constantly inspires me to push for a better CBC. Your tireless advocacy for gender parity and diversity — both on air and behind the scenes — has reshaped this place in crucial ways. So many producers and listeners owe you a profound debt of gratitude. Listeners owe you a debt of gratitude, as well, for the profound care, ingenuity and energy you bring to your work.

You’ve left an indelible mark on the radio service’s most beloved shows, from Morningside to As It Happens to The Sunday Edition. Plus, you’ve created two more terrific programs — Canada Reads and White Coat, Black Art. And along the way, you’ve mentored generation after generation of journalists. It’s hard to imagine that any other producer has had such a deep impact on the network.

Our little family at work means so much to me, and it’s gotten me through some of the toughest times of my life. You have redefined my understanding of friendship, and taught me what it means to truly show up for the people in your life. I so admire the way you go to the ends of the earth for the people you love, and your bottomless supply of empathy.

You have a heart of gold, the strongest spine of anyone I know, a brilliant mind, and a laugh I would recognize anywhere. Knowing you has made me a better journalist, a better person and a better friend. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything you have taught me and all the ways you’ve changed my life. I know I’m going to keep learning from you and cherishing our friendship for the rest of our lives. Love,

Talin — my first impression of you, many years ago, was that you were committed, tenacious, engaged, fierce, and hilarious. Every impression of I've had of you since is...the same. How is this possible? How did you do it, week in and week out, from show to show, for 43 years? HOW? It's a secret you'll take with you into retirement, but I suppose it's not a secret at all: it's just who you are. Which is why you have consistently been a guiding light in a business and a corporation that tends to extinguish people's fire over time. And why you have consistently been an inspiration. Your stellar career here proves there's no expiration on that inspiration. That's why I know you'll take all those qualities into this whole other chapter of your life. Thanks for everything you taught me, directly and indirectly. The CBC will miss you — and I'll miss you.

Talin — there are many impressive journalists at CBC but you’re one of the very best. Formidable and uncompromising when it came to issues that matter but with a capacity for empathy and understanding. You set the bar high for all of us. I’m so fortunate to have worked with you when Citizen Talin was on the prowl. I’m sure you had CEO’s quaking in their boardrooms when you were on their case. We need her — bring Citizen Talin back! Although you may take a welldeserved break, your curious mind never will — lucky for us. Looking forward to whatever you zero in on next. I’m so glad you’re on our side. Hi Talin, As you know, I am an advocate for retirement, so I can say "congratulations!" with all sincerity.

Some of your most memorable adventures are ahead.

When I think of the adventures we shared, some favourite anecdotes and themes come to mind right away. Most important, you are one of the few people whose name can become a verb.

Someone would say, “the only way we're going to get this story right is to Talin it." And it would be yours.

Then, as if by magic, your name would become a noun again, but a different kind of noun, with modifiers. We will remember for a long time, people who received the Full Talin, the Half Talin, or the Flying Talin. (Have you thought about switching to roller derby for a few seasons?)

One of the good parts of our time as colleagues was, we could be completely serious about wanting to make the world more fair for people of all persuasions, races, genders...and still we'd make room for rude jokes and other juvenilia. I recall the day you said something like, "don't tell anybody where you got this," with one of those grins...and gave me the website address for the not-authorized Disney page called Flash Mountain. There is little room for such hijinks now.

I'm glad we had those adventures, all of them. You made my work better and kept me from making some mistakes. I think I did the same for you. We argued, we agreed, we chased heroes and villains. We laughed a lot and wept a little. We did our best to be a force for good, and we were better at it because of you. Thank you, sister.

GEORGE JAMIESON

One of the favourite stories you told me Talin was about your father’s first days in Toronto after emigrating from Armenia. It is full of all the moxie you both had and have.

As you told me the story, your father was taking a streetcar for the first time. He boarded the car and asked the conductor how much the fare was. “Twenty cents,” said the conductor. “I’ll give you fifteen,” retorted your dad.

I laugh whenever I think of this.

And then there were the camping trips.

The fresh trout, the onion dip, the blueberry kir, the games, the sunbathing (I won’t tell that story I promise), and, of course, the friendship.

I vividly remember the first time we met, Talin. You were thinking about how to bring together radio and a one book/one community experience. You came to see me in my office (remember offices?). You didn’t want anything earnest, you wanted something engaging that would get people talking. You were so open during that first chat. That’s one of the things I found most appealing, along with the fact that you were up front about being an avid reader but not a books producer. Also, your energy, talk about zip!

Voting books off the bookshelf after no-holds-barred conversations to come up with one book for the whole country to read...wow! It seems like part of the landscape now, but at the time it was unique programming — and still is, I believe. It was unusual and exhilarating, and you sneakily got people talking about five books, not just one, during a months-long campaign and then must-listen radio shows (and TV too not long after).

It’s such a tribute to you that Canada Reads so quickly became a huge part of our literary landscape, that it’s still on the air (and all the platforms) and that all the programming and the shows keep selling books and animating conversations about books coast to coast to coast and well beyond our borders. (And now that I’m in publishing, I can see how important it is from the other side too.)

I know you’ll say you didn’t do it alone. It’s true, you continued as you started, collaborating with others, at the CBC, in the world at large. One of the remarkable things was how you worked across departments and program boundaries, also with outside organizations. Silo busting from way back. You were so open to having readings of excerpts on Between the Covers, excerpts and then the winning book, abridged. That first year, there was even a radio drama series! What a feat. I was lucky to be a small part of the story from Day One. (continued on next page)

You also made sure that literacy was a part of the program, with the winning publisher donating a portion of the sales or a significant amount to an organization. I was so impressed by your adding that element, and also how much you supported involving libraries and schools, from book donations to cross-Canada events and author appearances.

What a chase that first season must have been. You started with a bang in 2002, with a panel that included our first female prime minister and the actor who was our generation’s Anne of Green Gables. You continued with high-profile guests, persuading them to do all that reading. Good times with Jim Cuddy and Donna Morrissey, Denise Bombardier and Glen Murray, also a certain Trudeau, and so many more. And the Canada Reads panelists are only a small fraction of the many great bookings you made over so many years, for so many CBC shows.

On Canada Reads, you and Bill Richardson were the dream host/producer combo. And you built teams each year, from a bit of a revolving door of producers and associate producers. Starting in year five, I worked with you and David and Sally and Jackie and others in the room with no windows, a room alight with laughter and loving books and great content ideas. Brainstorming, writing tasks on the whiteboard, then doing all those tasks, interspersed with orgasmic lunches from the Sandwich Box and cups of tea from the bottomless teapot. Truly good times. That first year, you helped me navigate the hardest time of my life. When I came to work on Canada Reads, I was in a very rough place after Noel died. You helped me get back on my feet, and gave me a ton of support, as well as teaching me a lot about producing. I remember one afternoon in particular, when I was so stressed over a deadline for a green for a Toronto Public Library event, and you jumped in and found a way to both finish the green and cut the tension. It was for the musician, a harmonica player. I remember you posed questions like “Do you prefer to suck or blow?” and “How large a truck do you need to transport your instruments to events?” Though of course your writing was better! We all cracked up and the day took a distinct turn for the better. And the evening event was a big success (with a revised question line for the musician).

Five years of great gets and then the All-Star year, going out on a high note. I know you don’t love how the show has changed over the years, how it has evolved (devolved?), but the fact that it is still on the air and on all platforms, is a huge tribute to you. And when you left what was then the A&E Department (shudder) to go back to what was then Current Affairs, you made sure I was ready to step up, confidence restored. Thank you!

Along the way, I learned a lot from you about speaking truth to power and holding managers to account and fine dining and speaking truth to waiters!

I’m so glad we started talking, and that we’ve never stopped. I love the conversations with you, and with you and Sally and David. I look forward to many more, over many years. I can’t wait to see what you dream up next! All best wishes for the path(s) ahead. (continued on next page)

In fact, Samira and I even have a saying: TTT (Talk To Talin). And in my observation, when challenging situations present themselves around here, TTT has always been the right call. Even though you won't be here anymore, I'm sure many people will still be reaching out to you for wisdom — and a good laugh.

She was chasing a politician to appear on the following day's show. It was a must-get.

The assistant to the politician wasn't committing. Talin would check back, and check back. And check back again.

Until, in tears that were audible from end to end in the entire open plan workspace, we all heard her say: "But if he doesn't come on tomorrow, I'll get fired." More tears.

Phone call ends.

Talin jumps up, fist pumps and yells: "Yes! He's coming on."

That's dedication. Or medication.

Actually, that's Talin.

I first worked with Talin at This Morning after a long stint working in television, and I was green in the ways of radio, and at a daunting and giant initial blue sky held in the Artist's Lounge, (with what seemed like a cast of thousands who all knew each other really well) I was the new kid in class. Seeing Talin in action over the next few days, I thought‌wow...this person really knows radio, backwards and forward and every which way...she knows the drill. And to my everlasting gratitude and appreciation, she shared that with me over the next months and years, she was kind and welcoming and along with formidable chops as a producer and an advocate...she is a kind and loyal person and a nurturing mentor.

Also, I would be remiss in not mentioning her great storytelling ability...on the radio of course...but as well over a glass of wine or cup of coffee she always delivers the nuggets and the gossip, and she finishes it off with one of the best laughs in the building...maybe even the biz. Bonne chance my friend, long may your light shine!

How is the union at CBC ever going to learn what’s really going on in radio — without Talin?

Talin: you had a knack of putting two and two together and coming up with more than four.

You always know the real story behind this move or that program change. I think it’s partly because people trust you to tell you things, partly because you are incredibly discreet with what people tell you and mostly because you care enough to take time to add things up — especially if an injustice is involved.

One only needs to recall all you did for the security guard who was dismissed in a deplorable way.

Thank you for your years of caring, for your smart approach to collective action and for being a friend along the way.

Dearest Talin: When I first met you, you were as big as a house, booking up a storm at Morningside, growing a baby who would become your beloved Chris.

There was an immediate "click."

At As It Happens, you were a champion of productivity, ideas, support, energy and laughter. Many days and many shows just would not and could not have happened without you.

You were a bright shining star in the struggle to ensure women's voices were and are heard on CBC Radio. Thank the goddess you were there. Through it all, we encountered eye-rolls, mockery, indifference and outright hostility from many quarters. And it could have been a lonely battle. But you were always there, forever undaunted, keeping spirits up for all of us — and my spirits in particular — with baby cinnamon donuts and baklava bits. You gave us bread and roses in the best possible way.

During the ravaging cuts of the '90s you were a superb organizer in the fight to save public broadcasting — part of a huge national campaign we called Ours to Keep. You brought as much passion to envelope stuffing as you did to political strategizing and leadership — and that’s a rare and precious thing. What a spectacular contribution you made.

At The Sunday Edition, you were a dog with a bone, in the chase and in keeping our beloved listeners at the centre, a queen of order and hard work, but also of fun and games.

And all through the years, you have been an ally and friend — brave, determined and generous.

It goes without say that The Radio Service — yes, WE still call it that — won't be the same without you.

Thanks for the wonderful memories. And watch out world. She’s on the loose!

Dear Talin: That was a magnificent au revoir letter you wrote, but then it was a magnificent career. I was so sorry that I couldn’t join what was undoubtedly a Zoom love-fest on Friday: the family and I are in a remote corner of PEI where internet is impossibly erratic.

I know you’ve heard from Michele, and I want to add my words of friendship and affection to the continued dossier of admiration. I must admit that I had no idea that your career encompassed so many triumphs of broadcasting... I’m inclined to ask how the CBC will survive without you. Yes, there were setbacks and miserable evidence of human failings, but all in all, an unsurpassed contribution to public radio decade after decade. Your range of subjects over the years was stunningly encyclopedic.

In personal terms, I feel myself to be in your everlasting debt. My unexpected appointment to the UN — an appointment that changed my life for the subsequent 36 years — was the product of Bill Davis, Dalton Camp and Talin Vartanian. You, personally, didn’t speak to Mulroney, but there’s no question that KCL softened my abrasive corners and bestowed a semblance of legitimacy. You were a remarkable producer: I remember how much I loved the chats, the ideas, the fun. We’d never have made it such a flagship segment if it hadn’t been for you.

So there you have it. I truly look forward to a coffee or lunch when this ghastly virus is expunged.

You’re a feminist force of nature Talin, with many more years to come of championing social justice.

Talin is a warrior, in the good sense of the word. She speaks truth to power, when others are shy or intimidated. She looks out for others, when fellow colleagues are occupied, or worse, indifferent. She puts the T in tenacity and her heart is the size of The Grinch’s — at the end of the story. Before you see her, you feel her — her energy. It’s powerful and focused on doing good in this world. You want the truth, generally without sugar, ask Talin. Her forthrightness is not meant to hurt, but to inform without dillydally. Talin can be passionate in her arguments, but she will listen to your countering position. And for that, you can always trust her. Trust is a big word, and something essential to journalism. That’s why Talin is such a damn good journalist. People trust her. They trust her with telling their stories, no matter how sensitive they are. They also trust her to tell their stories accurately and often with a bit of élan. When I first met Talin, I trusted her right away. While she might utter the word “bullshit” more than most, there’s not an ounce of it in her.

My friendship started with her in 1989 — with a three week stint at As It Happens. I was a newbie, and Talin went out of her way to help me, to care about me, to give me courage. Later, when I was a producer down the hall at Morningside, I could often hear her laugh, which made me smile. I could also hear her call out bullshit from time to time, which also made me smile. When I was the Network Producer in Halifax, Talin was my As It Happens contact. I feel kinda sorry for the senior AIH producers trying to say no to a story pitched by the Armenian Arab tag team — but they were stories that often ended up leading the show, even after an initial “no” to the pitch. Best combo I have ever had the pleasure of being a part of. She is impossible not to love — if you are not afraid to love warriors who tell the truth.

Dearest Talin, Where do I even begin?

I remember the first time I met you. I was sitting at a desk near the couches when you walked dressed in black and pink carrying your backpack. You stopped to say hello and introduce yourself. Once you were settled in, you made tea and offered me some. Later that day you invited me to join you, Donya and Pauline for lunch. I thought it was a friendly gesture to welcome a new coworker. But you kept inviting me to join you on the days I was working at The Sunday Edition and later on, everyday. And so the Fab Four TSE Lunch Crew was born.

In the beginning I was utterly perplexed. Ever the cynic and introvert, I thought: “What? Someone at the corporation is actually asking me to stop working, take a break and eat lunch?”

After a decade of maintaining certain boundaries at work, I decided to let my guard down. Boy am I happy I decided to join y’all in the Green Booth.

Within a few weeks of working and eating lunch with you I realized something — YOU are my people.

I remember asking you, “Are you sure you’re not from New York?” You said no but the New Yorker in me likes to think a part of you is. How can it not be? You take no sh-- and suffer no fools! (And you did spend summers at Jones Beach!)

After four years of trying to adapt to a new place, I finally found a safe space where I could be my true self without fear. YOU created that space. And for that I’m thankful. (continued on next page)

In the time we've worked together, I have learned so much from you personally and professionally. Seeing you fight for what’s right, call out what’s wrong, and always act from a place of honesty and integrity has been a welcome reminder that that’s what we all should be doing.

You taught me how to consider things from different perspectives. When faced with tough choices, you taught me when to persist and when to accept. “What would Talin do?” is the first question I now ask when facing any difficulties.

Call me silly but I love the fact that both our names start with “T”. You are the Batman to my Robin and I have loved every moment we spent together fighting crimes against the CBC Language Guide. But the T&T Dynamite Duo's adventures don't end here. You're on speed dial and our badass, dynamic, crime-fighting partnership will never have a retirement date. EVER. Whenever I question my decision to move here, I remind myself, “Well, you wouldn’t have met Talin otherwise.” Your friendship is one of the best things that came out of that choice.

Thank you for taking me under your wing, sharing your wisdom, and being so generous with your time. Thank you for meticulously checking my work and offering constructive feedback to improve it. Thank you for always being direct and honest and giving me the courage to make tough decisions. Thank you for telling me to f--- off when I lingered after work at the office (seriously). Above all, thank you for making me feel like I belong.

You are brilliant and fierce — a tenacious journalist, a wonderful role model and a loyal friend. You have taught me how to be a better storyteller, journalist and copy-editor. Most importantly, you have helped me become a better person. I will miss our epic lunches, our weekly T&T emails and your daily presence at work.

An appreciation of Talin Vartanian If you just happened to have been an executive producer at CBC Radio, you thanked your lucky stars to have Talin on your team. She brought a unique combination of personality traits to the job.

To wit: Generosity: Whether offering to help with a difficult edit or dispensing advice about which mattress to buy, Talin is generous in word and deed. Her instinct was always to ask “How can I help?” Her willingness to take on the most mundane of tasks in a crunch was an irreplaceable gift.

Relentlessness: Talin may be the best chaser ever. She employs the techniques of a detective with the passion of a big-game hunter. Some of her chases are legendary. She once tracked down the next-door neighbour of a desired guest and convinced them to leave a note tucked inside the front door of the quarry. It worked.

Creativity: It’s Talin who came up with ideas for quizzes and on-air games. “Shut Up, I’m Thinking” gave us hours of fun and holiday relief.

Love of words and language: Talin is a copy editor non-pareil; she’s best buddies with the Oxford comma, the em-dash, and a gazillion other arcane rules of grammar and usage. In these days of online ascendence, this is hugely valuable. Talin is also a brilliant online Upwords competitor; she once scored 69 points for one word, and 638 points for a game. This is personally very upsetting.

Experience: From Ottawa to Toronto, from As It Happens to Morningside to Canada Reads to White Coat Black Art to The Sunday Edition, few producers have taken on so many different roles and succeeded so well in them all. At Morningside, she invented the political panel; Kierans, Camp and Lewis was mandatory listening for anyone interested in Canadian politics, and the three-pundit panel is now standard. She shepherded Canada Reads from idea to national institution. She made CBC Radio more relevant and more entertaining.

Fearlessness: Talin speaks truth to power. When she sees injustice, she makes her feelings known, no matter the personal cost. It’s a trait that endears her to her colleagues and has held her back from promotions to more senior jobs.

A gift for friendship: Talin makes and maintains strong friendships. She shares her lunches, she offers advice and sympathy, and she is always ready to share in a triumph or a joke. And she keeps in touch.

A passion for fairness: Talin’s fierce feminism and dedication to social justice compels her to side with the underdog pretty much every time.

In closing: Thank you Talin, for your support, your hard work, your excellent advice, your ideas and most of all, your friendship. Congratulations on your stellar career, and I know a happy and fulfilling retirement awaits. My very best wishes to you and to Konrad, Chris and Cass.

We are both Wexford girls, and despite attending high school in different cohorts, I have always felt a link with you over that (and possibly because Hratch was in my grade). I will also forever be grateful that you recommended me to co-host U.S. election night coverage in 2008. Announcing that Obama had won is both a career highlight and a personal one.

The Queen of the chase, hound of the town, tracking down every guest, when they don’t want to be found, she’ll take you to task and then put you to work with a cheeky grin and a shrug but don’t shirk your duty, or Talin will know, then she’ll come and then get you and won’t let you go, for tenacity runs in her veins with conviction but please let me tell you that TV is itching, for the moment that’s right when she’ll say with straight face that “the boss wants to see you, you are a disgrace” but it will be a joke and you’ll kick yourself then, because the next day she will do it again but she’ll go to the wall if you need her support because Talin is so decent, yes she’s a good sort, if you need some advice from someone who knows, about life or the radio or following your nose you should ask her and then you will be so surprised as she stares and then looks at you straight in the eyes and she’ll say “think again, we don’t have all day, the people must know this, what do you say? Let’s make something splendid together with care and then take it and put it the fuck on the air” and then once you’ve done that and it’s brilliant of course, she’ll say “why are you standing there like a big horse, there’s more stories to tell, more truth to expose” and that is Talin from her head to her toes.

Talin, You've always had a great sense of humour, but this "I'm retiring" is probably your best joke.

I can only imagine how many people fell for it. Good one. But you and I both know you're not allowed to leave the Mother Corp. I mean if you WERE really to leave the CBC, the Corporation would be without one of its few remaining grown-ups.

Your outstanding story sense, sound judgement, creativity, grit, determination and, above all, compassion are essential to the way the CBC operates. You set the bar for the rest of us. I've always said, when in doubt, look to Talin for guidance. So you can only imagine what would happen to this place that we love if you did walk out the door.

Oh, I suppose if the day came and you did actually leave, it'd be good to know that part of your legacy will be the countless interns and young journalists you've guided to success, imbuing them all with your passion and love for this place. If that retirement day ever does come, it's going to be a loss to CBC. Fortunately, this talk of you retiring is just a bad joke and it's making me chuckle because if it's true I'd start to cry. What can I say? Fun, funny, fearless, fun, funny, fearless...sometimes scary — yes, it's true. But always smart. And always fun...funny...and fearless. As she knows well, my first encounter with Talin was day one of my time at Morningside. (Yes, we're both that...young.) My very first item was "Tiny Druek, Queen of The Sourdough Beauty Contest." (Tiny was in the Yukon.)

I recall so clearly Talin saying to me: "OK, so you do know how to type up a "green, don't you?"

Well, Talin being both smart and yes, scary, so intimidated me that I suddenly wasn't even sure at that moment that I knew where the space bar was on the typewriter. (Yes, typewriter.) But somehow, with Talin's guidance Tiny was a success. And a long friendship was launched.

Talin welcome to the next 43 years. And if you ever forget how to type up a green — I'm here to help. Tiny too I'll bet.

CHARLOTTE ODELE

I just want to say a few words about the wonderful Talin Vartanian as she retires from the CBC. First of all, I want to describe her as a journalist, a journalist I've known.

And I'm going to give you some words here. She's fierce. Tenacious. She's a dog with a bone. She's curious and questioning, and she never loses her sense of wonder and astonishment. The world always seems to surprise her, both the good parts and the bad. She has — and this is the thing I really admire the most — she has the most heightened sense of justice. And she pursues it in everything she does, both as a person and as a journalist.

But she's never cynical or jaded or unfair. Even when she's giving someone the gears, rightfully so.

Talin is also kind, and thoughtful, and caring of other people's feelings. She's also very funny. The most outrageous practical joker I've ever known. You just have to remember her April Fool's pranks.

CBC would be a lesser place without Talin. But the world is still full because we have a person in it who is full of wonder and justice and friendship.

Thank you for everything Talin. And best to you in the future.

Hi Talin, Dean here in retirement land. It was a great pleasure working with you on so many amazing interviews. You are the epitome of a chase producer. If you were told there was an ungettable guest you always took that as a challenge. You were like a Bull terrier who would not let go of a guest’s leg until they were signed, sealed and delivered. Some of my fondest memories were on Friday afternoons. Things could get very stressful packaging the show and you would turn to me within earshot of everyone and say, "Stop fucking the dog and get back to work." One of my favourite iterations of this fabulous woman is Citizen Talin, crusading for the consumer, for the underdog, crusading for us all. I mean, why DO women's haircuts cost so much more, anyway? Take it to Citizen Talin!

Talin has always been about fairness and justice, whether it's mattress pricing at Sleep Country, volunteering at Second Harvest or creating the best, most respectful working conditions at the CBC. As a host, Talin always made me smarter, funnier and wiser. Her intros reached out and grabbed the listener's ear. Her questions were provocative, inventive...always thoughtful. Working with Talin was a gas.

Her merriment and mischief. Her passion and compassion, her light-heartedness and her laugh. Oh, that laugh — we were seldom allowed on the radio together for fear of shattering windows across the country.

Talin, thank you for all the decades of great radio, for being a fabulous colleague and a cherished friend.

Talin’s passion for sharing information, her drive to create a better world and her unquenchable thirst to know more won’t be retired any time soon, if ever. Talin, You were the first person I ever met at CBC. At first, you terrified me. You were a towering talent and task-master assigned as my internship mentor at As It Happens back in the mists of time.

I so wanted to impress you and my new colleagues. But Talin, you weren't giving out gold stars for free! You demanded nothing short of excellence...from others and yourself. This is your gift, setting THE standard: super smart, passionate, dedicated...a quintessential CBC Radio superstar.

And (I was relieved to discover) past the initial gruff exterior that put me in my place in my early days...you're a kind, encouraging soul with a huge smile and laugh.

Talin taught me how to use a razor blade. Yes, children, way back in the days of yore, when As It Happens interviews were edited in airless little rooms with razor blades and sticky tape, Talin took me in hand — a person with zero experience — and taught me everything I needed to know to make radio. Her mensch-like mentoring dates that far back, and no doubt even further. I was, at the time, terrified. Terrified of the Great Michael Enright. The Celebrated Karen Levine. All those producers who knew everything about what was happening in remote corners of the world.

About having to, gasp, PITCH stories in front of these terrifyingly competent journalists. But with Talin by my side, I could not fail. And did not. I owe my radio career to her.

I’m sure Talin’s accomplishments and legacy have been documented at length by now so let me talk about the beginning. I was co-hosting All In A Day at CBO in Ottawa when Talin first joined the corporation as a chase producer. She was just as smart, confident, determined and dedicated from day one as she was throughout her career.

Listening to Talin work the phones was a treat, I’m not sure anyone said no without a darn good reason. I know I would not have been able to. Her pre-interviews were just as sharp. But the best part is, she did it with that infectious smile and laugh I’m sure she is still known for. A joy to work with and an honour to know. Talin you’re the best, and I wish you the same. I am delighted to see Talin finally leave the CBC after a decades-long reign of terror. Mark my words: Talin is a liar and a bully.

I was ecstatic to join The Sunday Edition in September 2019, but what had initially been a dream for me turned into many hours of sleepless nightmares. After being initially placated by Talin's stellar lunchtime advice, based on her decades of expertise and good humour, I then met her dark side. It was then I realised that Talin had a habit of telling me that members of the team (mainly Pauline and Donya) were shit-talking my work ethic (which, to be fair, doesn't actually exist). Talin turned the team against me, against each other and against the corporation. She is pure evil.

She also happens to be one of the kindest and funniest people I have ever had the privilege to work with. I'm sad to see her go, but I know she's going to keep being an absolute gem long after she leaves CBC. Thanks for teaching me that as a casual I am allowed to and SHOULD take a lunch break. 10 THINGS THAT COME TO MIND ABOUT TALIN VARTANIAN UPON HER RETIREMENT 1. Talin takes "colossal pain in the ass" as a compliment. I've heard she put in on her resume, too.

2. She knows the definition of words you didn't even know existed.

3. She will always ask the question that everyone else is thinking of but doesn't have the nerve to ask.

4. You don't need to know your rights because Talin knows them all and will make sure you learn what they are. And that you exercise them.

5. If you need to know something of an operational nature or who to call to get something done, ask Talin. If she doesn't know, it's time to go to Erin Knoll because no one will know. So now I guess Erin's gonna get a lot more email.

6. No one cares more about public radio or the people she works with (or grammar) than Talin.

7. She has never, as far as any of us knows, backed down from a fight she thought was worth fighting.

8. No one looks after, and out for, her colleagues more than Talin.

9. Come September, CBC Radio will be missing a good deal more of its fire, heart and soul.

10. We will miss her terribly.

Dear Talin — my work mom, my mentor, my forever gal pal, I have a phrase I like to use whenever I refuse to take shit or shy away from a necessary confrontation: I call it “channelling my inner Talin.” I put on a calm, confident face, a big smile, and off I go to face my tormenter. You’re kind of a legend among my friends, who are probably just as keen to one day meet this fabled Talin as they are tired of hearing me utter her name!

What has always blown me away about your particular brand of tenacity is how devoid of hostility and ill will it actually is. Your toughness always comes loaded with good faith and immense generosity.

I will never forget my very first interaction with you. Brand new to radio and wet behind the ears, there I was at TSE writing my first ever script, and you stood behind me, hands to your waist like always, and asked me to read my script out loud. I was petrified! And then you painstakingly dissected sentence after sentence and told me why my writing wouldn’t work for radio. But you know what? With most other people, that experience would have felt utterly humiliating and confidence-crushing. With you, I felt an immediate bond instead. I could tell right away that the person who stood before me was hugely caring and big-hearted — direct and stern though she might be! (continued on next page)

I can think of very few people who bring the kind of generosity of spirit that you do in all your daily interactions — and especially to the lives of those close to you. You give and give and give, and I have always been in awe of where such a delicate flower finds all that energy to give so much of herself!

I spent so much of my 20s desperately looking for a female role model — someone in whose life I saw signs of the kind of life I wanted to live as an adult. For years, I searched but came up empty.

No one satisfied. In meeting you, I finally realized my dream. I look up to you in oh so many ways, Talin. In you, I finally have a vision for the kind of person it’s possible for me to be. A huge aspiration, I know! But at least now I have something to aspire towards.

And don’t think you’re off the hook just because you’re leaving the corp! I’m still going to be knocking on your door, flooding your inboxes, and calling you at all hours to get the kind of life advice I know only you can give. Channeling my inner Talin can only get me so far — sometimes I just need the real thing!

I’m so going to miss our lunches, tea time, debriefs and check-ins. You made my stay at the CBC a place of constant comfort, and gave me a truly new appreciation for the power of female friendship. I’ll miss your laughter and the way it could fill up a whole room. And I’ll especially miss the way your eyes would light up whenever we plotted to stir up some kind of trouble.

Thanks for teaching me to always fight for the life I want. I hope that, like you, I will never stop fighting that good fight. xoxoxo
