Service Spotlight Jenelle Cocorpus, Dedicated Key Club Member On June 8th of 2014, there was an event in Key Club called Egg Rolls and Egg Cream Festival that took place at the Museum at Eldridge Street synagogue. The event started at around 10 a.m. when all the volunteers arrived at the synagogue to receive their breakfast and their jobs for the day. There were many different advisors that were in charge of the groups of volunteers at different stations. The different stations included the stalls selling egg rolls and egg creams, the gift shop, the fan-making stall, and a kippah-making stall. The volunteer job I had, was to work at the gift shop and try to sell the different items that were supplied to us by the Museum. All of the money raised from each of the stalls were for the synagogue. While volunteering at the gift shop, we tried selling all the items by advertising all the items and showing the kids how to use certain items that we were selling, such as the Jacob’s Ladder or the Chinese yo-yo. It was pretty fun

Ada Chan, Dedicated Key Clubber The Egg Rolls and Egg Cream festival was a really fun event that took place on Eldridge Street in Chinatown. It celebrated the cultural history of the Jewish and Chinese that took place in that community. The streets were filled with people because there were a variety of different activities going. There were stands serving egg rolls and egg creams, which were drinks made by the volunteers by mixing chocolate syrup, milk, and seltzer water. At the end of the street, there was a stage where everyone could listen to traditional Chinese and Jewish music. There were multiple Kippah-making stands, as well, which were very popular amongst the young kids. Inside the museum was a challah-making class where the visitors would learn to make these Jewish braided egg breads and take them home to bake them. There were also Chinese and Hebrew classes where people learned some basics of the Chinese and Hebrew languages. Overall, the event was really fun because we got to interact with all the other volunteers and visitors. We also got to explore the beautiful synagogue. Our Key Club group was definitely the loudest and the most cheerful bunch out of all the volunteers from other high schools.

demonstrating all of the merchandise and meeting a lot of new people while trying to sell them the objects to raise funds for the Museum. The synagogue was created in 1887 because two and a half million East European Jews just came to the United States. One thing I learned is how this synagogue is a preservation of the history and culture of the Jews that migrated to the United States. That history is very important for the future generations because they will learn from the mistakes previous people made in the past. Future generations will still know the culture that was present in the past generations and they can continue to practice all the cultural traditions of the past. This sort of relates to the quote of Malcolm X that was, “The future belongs to those who prepare for it today” because the future is the result of the information that was kept since the past.

Xinci Ling, Key Club Member The egg roll and egg cream festival took place on the Sunday, June 8, 2014 to celebrate both the Chinese and Jewish culture. There were many activities that took place during the festival to celebrate these cultures. These activities included making paper fans, decorating your own kippahs, and the selling of egg rolls and egg cream. It was my first time tasting an egg cream and making it involved the process of squeezing chocolate syrup into a cup, adding milk, stirring, and then adding seltzer water to the mixture. It sort of tasted like carbonated chocolate milk, different and weird, but surprisingly, not bad. I also tried the egg roll which tasted okay. (I was grateful for the free food you get for volunteering because I did not bring anything else to eat and had only brought 5 dollars with me. I had spent 1 dollar on a metal kazoo bought from the festival’s gift shop.) I spent the first 2 hours guarding the instruments that the musicians would play at the festival. The festival included talented senior Chinese musicians and other musicians, who lightened up the festival by inviting the volunteers and the crowd to join together in dancing to some nice music. Afterwards, I was free to take a look around the festival. I spent most of the day around the gift shop, introducing, and advertising products to the customers. This was rather fun because advertising the items included playing with them or showing how they work, which caught the customers’ interests. I also ventured to the paper fan table later on to join other volunteers in making paper fans and helping kids with it. Later on, after we all cleaned up, we all headed into the synagogue, which hosted the festival, to take a group picture. It was a nice event, I got to meet new people and make new friends.

Service Events Angie Chen, Public Relations Head On June 20th, Bronx Science Key Club volunteered with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and Toys R Us. The foundation was created by Alexandra “Alex” Scott who wanted to raise money to find a cure to cancer for other children. I arrived at the merged Toys R Us and Babies R Us store in Bay Parkway, Brooklyn at about 10 A.M. Herman, Jerry, Jennings and I all helped by asking people coming into the store to donate money for the cause, and if they would like some lemonade. At one point, Jennings and Jerry went out into the parking with an “Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation” sign to ask for donations. We met many friendly people who easily gave money towards the great cause. We stayed for about five hours at a lemonade table that the store had set up. Within five hours, at the table alone, we managed to raise over $200 from donations! This foundation really amazed me. What started out as a wish of 4 year old Alex, to help other children with cancer just like her, turned into a huge foundation that has received many awards and lots of recognition across the country.

Jerry Lau, Key Club Member On June 1st, students from all walks of life came to Inwood Hill Park to celebrate the diversity of Native American cultures.

As a volunteer in the Drums Along the Hudson event, I assisted the coordinators of the event by distributing pamphlets, as well as making sure that essential supplies were sent from point A to point B in a safely and timely manner. By participating in this event, I learned about many aspects of Native American culture, one of them being the dreamcatcher. The dreamcatcher, as the name applies, “catches” good dreams and gives them to the wearer.

At the end of this event, some other volunteers and I were given the opportunity to participate in a pow wow, which was a truly memorable ending to this special event.

Jonson Jin, Dedicated Key Club Member On June 9th, Bronx Science Key Club volunteered at CAF’s Hearts and Hope Gala, where we helped stuff goodie bags. We started the event by first meeting a member of the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF), who himself, was a challenged athlete. He told us his story of how the foundation had helped him and how he became involved with the foundation. It was a truly inspiring story. He explained to us the different events that CAF had, and how it has helped to provide thousands of kids and adults, in the foundation, with the equipment they needed. One event was a dinner to raise money, for the foundation, from sponsors, in hopes of receiving donations to help even more athletes. The job of stuffing goodie bags was quite tedious. It started with opening up hundreds of bags all stuck to each each other and filling it up with flyers, magazines, and chocolate.

In the end we were able to stuff nearly eight hundred goodie bags. It felt good to know that we were able to help many challenged athletes, and put a smile on their face, even though we wouldn't see it.

Member Spotlight monthly recognition to Key Club Extraordinaire

Erna is one loveable person with a heart of gold.

Whenever she is at an event she exhibits leadership whenever a situation needs it. When she socializes during events, she makes sure to always include everyone. She always has a smile on her face and is always happy. I love being around her and her bubbly energy - Jasmine Quindala

Erna's amazing. How else do I put it? Aside from being a wonderful committee head, she is also a great friend who makes you smile every time you're around her.

She might drive us all insane at times but I guess that's why we love her so much!

Erna is truly a special key club member and has one of the most sincere hearts I’ve met. She doesn’t just show commitment to her role as a member and co-head, but she also displays a genuine amiability and warmness to everyone, always making sure to take time out of her day to talk to you or greet you, even if you’re someone she’s only met once. I’m so damn proud of how much this freshie has grown as a key club member and I’m lucky that I get to share key club with such a kick-ass friend.

For the Month of June, Erna Radoncic 17' In a club as large as our own, it is important to recognize those who are dedicated, and those who go above and beyond the call and role of a member. That is why it is vital we recognize a familiar face in the crowd during various Key Club meetings and events.

Fundraisers

Esther Lam, Dedicated Key Club Member The "The Fault In Our Stars" (TFIOS) movie fundraiser was a really fun event, which turned out to be a success! There wasn't much to the event except watching the movie, enjoying our popcorn, soda, and crying, of course! The event was a great way to relieve that post-finals stress. Although the event was in Douglaston and was quite a trip, I think that the movie was worth the trip. ^_^ I'm glad that we were able to enjoy the movie and still help to benefit a great cause at the same time! It was cool to see how everyone in Key Club bonded over the emotion filled storyline of the movie. I think that my favorite part of the event, other than the movie itself, was the fact that so many people brought tissue boxes in preparation for the heartfelt scenes. I remember our board President Jasmine, who had a tissue box decorated with the white and black cloud design with a blue background, as seen on the TFIOS book cover by John Green. It was a simple event but was thoroughly enjoyed by many--even non-Key Clubbers!
