Dear Parents, What a very busy half term this has been with so much happening in and out of school. Our students have shown how they are able to take on the wide range of opportunities that are available to them. At the beginning of this half term we were still in the thick of GCSE exams but all that was forgotten when year 11 were able to celebrate the school prom with the river trip on the Thames right through the heart of London. A great evening was had by all with some amazing dancing going on and that was just the staff!

Our PE department have not only been involved in sports day and District Sports but also students taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme at bronze and silver level. The maths department have been hosting the UK Maths Challenge, Year 10 Inspiration Day, a Murder Mystery and a Gifted and Talented competition for years 5 and 6. Our P4C Ambassadors took part in a ‘Philosothon’ in London where

they were judging primary school children undertaking enquiries. Recent research shows that the impact of P4C helps raise literacy levels.

Some of the wonderful art work that has been on display in reception moved to the Mall Galleries in London as part of the Royal Society of British Artists National Student Awards where Daniel Pink’s sculpture of a hand with a lizard was the winner and took centre stage in the gallery.

For me a recent highlight has been the production of Bugsy Malone in which I was allowed to play in the band. It was a great privilege to be right in the middle of such wonderful singing and acting, including year 5 students from Godalming Junior School and Loseley Fields School. Well done to all involved.

The events and activities that I have mentioned just touch the surface of everything that has been taking place. I believe that in providing such opportunities for our students that they so readily embrace, helps to develop the broad education that Broadwater is able to offer and helps to develop the students’ skills, interests and opportunities.

We are in the process of creating a new prospectus and upgrading the school website. The early drafts look very good and we hope to launch the new website later in September so this is something to look out for. As we reach the end of term we are saying goodbye to more staff than usual due to the retirement of some very long-standing staff who will be sorely missed.

In our Special Needs department Rosie Tomes is leaving and will be starting a teaching qualification. In a short time she has made a great impression and will be missed by the students she has closely supported. Also retiring are Janet Terry, after working at the school for 8 years, and Gill Eppy who has worked with SLCN students at the school for 16 years. I would like to express my sincere thanks to both of them for their contribution to making a difference to so many students.

Louise Simmons is moving from being a teaching assistant in the maths department to starting a teaching qualification here at Broadwater, so we’ll be losing a teaching assistant but gaining a teacher.

Jose Garcia is taking up a full time position at George Abbot School.

Shauneen Ferris, who has really developed the students’ artwork in the school, is returning to her homeland of Ireland. We will be sorry to see her leave.

Holly Cranfield and Lynda MacDonald who work part-time in the languages department are both leaving at the end of term. Both have helped the school out in a difficult period of staffing in languages this year, by taking on the additional work needed as the two subjects increase in popularity.

Nicola Pankhurst who has worked in the maths department for the last 8 years will be moving to Tomlinscote School in September which will provide her the opportunity to be able to teach sixth form.

Bill Clingham, caretaker as part of our site team and a regular driver of the school minibuses is retiring at the end of term. We wish him well.

Elizabeth Eves, after 14 years at Broadwater, has decided to move to the private sector of education looking for a new challenge. Mrs Eves not only taught science but also led the Social Science and careers in the school as well as supporting the school orchestra with flute teaching and stage manager for our school productions.

We wish her all the very best in her new career.

Steve Young, former head of geography who also worked as our exams officer and data manager since 2008, is finally retiring. Steve is meticulous in his management of the exams and in total he has worked at Broadwater for 40 years. We wish him all the very best in his retirement.

Dave Hughes, physics teacher, previous head of science has decided that it’s time to call it a day. Mr Hughes is retiring after serving the school for 35 years. Not only will many students be sorry to see him retire but he has taught many parents and the odd grandparent with such a long association with the school. There are many students that have gone on to achieve great things having been taught by Mr Hughes and I know that he is held in great regard by many current and ex-students.

We wish him all the very best in his retirement and I’m sure that he’ll be taking the opportunity to perfect his snowboarding techniques in the winter months.

Finally we say goodbye to Robert Coombes, who is also retiring. Mr Coombes started at Broadwater in 1973 as a teacher of CDT. As time passed, he progressed through the leadership structure in the school as a head of year, assistant headteacher and finally deputy headteacher. He has been responsible for the timetable and data management in recent years. Mr Coombes was instrumental in the development of the IT systems in the school with both the school network, WIFI network and ensuring that good home-school IT links were developed. Recently he developed the work with Spacelink, enabling the school to develop this opportunity within the curriculum. If you are an ex-Broadwater student, you were probably

taught by Mr Coombes and Mr Hughes and I am sure that you will share with me in wishing both of them all the very best in their retirement.

I am pleased to be able to report that all of the above positions have been filled and we don’t have any vacancies for September.

I wish you the very best during the long summer break, let’s hope we have some good weather for a change in August. Looking forward to a new academic year in September where I will update you on the new staff appointed.

Bugsy Malone On Thursday 9th and Friday 10th July 2015 students from all year groups performed in our production of ‘Bugsy Malone’, Alan Parker’s classic story of gang warfare, rivalry and giving a little love during prohibition 1920’s Chicago.

The students have worked incredibly hard over the last several months to put on an absolutely amazing and breath taking show. We also had Year 5 pupils from Godalming Junior and Loseley Fields schools taking part. They have been coming into Broadwater for ‘Bugsy’ workshops which at times have been led by Broadwater students. It has been a brilliant and worthwhile collaboration between us and our feeder schools. We hope to continue this in the years to come and with our next production.

I cannot put into words just how proud I am of everyone who took part, the cast, the band, backstage and all the staff who gave up their time as well. It is down to the commitment and team spirit of everyone involved which made it such a success.

The buzz around school and in the local community was evident and everywhere I go at the moment, people are talking about how fantastic the production was. The students received a standing ovation on both nights and the atmosphere in the hall was electric. Please see below some comments from parents and guests who were in the audience. Aquila NEWS PEGASUS NEWS Phoenix News After a very busy final term we are all looking forward to a nice break over the Summer holidays. We are all very proud of the achievements and efforts of the students in Aquila, Phoenix and Pegasus since the start of the school year.

All students have made a great effort to improve their overall attendance, punctuality and achievement. The year 11’s worked tirelessly for their GCSE Exams and we are all now eagerly awaiting results day on 20th August 2015. And although it seems like a lifetime away now, when our new year 7’s joined us in September they worked their hardest and have had a great first year settling in to school life at Broadwater School.

We have spoken about our student’s achievements but none of this would have been possible without the full support and encouragement that they receive from their tutors, co- tutors and associated members of staff. We really are very lucky to have such dedicated teams supporting us. A very big ‘thank you’ to all staff and students and we wish them a lovely summer holiday and a deserved break.

MATHS DEPARTMENT NEWS The Summer Term has been a very busy time in the Maths department with students taking part in: the UK Maths Challenge; a year10 Maths inspiration day at Weydon School with Matt Parker; and a Murder Mystery for the new intake of year 7s. We have also hosted our annual Gifted and Talented Maths Competition for year 5 and 6 students from local primary schools.

Our students have thrived in all Challenges presented to them and have achieved some outstanding results.

The following students achieved certificates in this year’s Junior Maths Challenge.

Over 240 000 pupils took part across the UK, with only the top 6% receiving a gold, the next 13% silver and the next 21% bronze. Callum Wilson scored so highly that he not only achieved a Gold certificate but also progressed through to the Kangaroo round – Well Done Callum!

Current year 6 students spent the day at Broadwater for a taster session before they move up in September. It was a huge success and all the children seemed to enjoy themselves. While in the Maths department the children were given a murder mystery to solve.

This was a fun exercise which required the children to apply a variety of mathematical techniques and skills to solve the 'Cluedo' style problem. Well done to all those who managed to solve the problem and for all your hard work and enthusiasm on the day.

On 25Th June, we hosted our annual Gifted and Talented Maths Competition for year 5 and 6 students. It was a wonderful occasion with 60 children from, Busbridge, Tillingbourne, Green Oaks, St James’ Elstead and St Polycarps in Farnham attending the event. The competition was a huge success and it was an absolute pleasure watching the collaboration of the junior school children with our year 10 students, who helped facilitate the event. The year 10 students were outstanding role models for their younger counterparts and it was fantastic to see all the children having such fun while attempting challenging Mathematical problems. The competition was very tightly contested with Tillingbourne taking the first place and Busbridge coming a very close second and third. The event has been scheduled in again for next year on 23rd June 2016.

On July 6th 10 Year 10 students took part in a Maths Inspiration Day at Weydon School, the students worked on activities requiring maths skills to solve real problems, including bridge building, the petrol challenge and working in binary. The highlight of the day was the talk by Matt Parker who stunned the students with ability to cube root large numbers in his head, explained the Maths behind bar codes and showed that photos are all based on formatted spreadsheets! By the end of the day the students had a clearer idea of how Maths is used in so many areas, the various opportunities available and how important it is to encourage Mathematicians to support future development in technology.

It is always sad to say goodbye to our Year 11 students, but they were ready to move on. Many have worked extremely hard in the run up to the exams and we wish them well in the future and fingers crossed for some more great results in August.

It's with great sadness that we say farewell to Mrs Nicola Pankhurst (nee Elmer).

Mrs Pankhurst has been such a central part of the Maths team for the last 8 years after joining as a Newly Qualified Teacher in 2007. She will be sorely missed by both staff and students alike. Mrs Pankhurst has worked very closely with a number of students during her time at Broadwater both as a Maths teacher and Support Tutor, and we all wish her well in her new School.

We have four new members of staff joining the team in September; Ms Petra Guwra an experienced Maths teacher, Miss Melanie Lewis who will be joining us as our new TA and Mr Bob Aalem and Mrs Jo Turner who will be working as the Maths HLTA’s.

Mrs Louise Simmons who is currently working in the department as TA and small group tutor will be staying with us but in the new role of trainee teacher as part of the i2i programme. We hope they will all be very happy here at Broadwater.

CARNEGIE 2015

Our reading group have been taking part in the annual Carnegie Shadowing Scheme. The scheme centres on the prestigious Carnegie medal, which is awarded annually to the most outstanding book for children and young people, published in the previous year.

Our group have read and debated the merits of the eight nominated titles and have ‘shadowed’ the official judges, looking for the special element which makes a book outstanding.

An Inter-school Book Quiz was held, to celebrate the event and to test their knowledge of the titles they had read. This included teams from Rodborough, Woolmer Hill and Glebelands schools.

Our team was magnificent and Broadwater WON the challenge cup this year and was presented with the cup by Peter Gordon of Eagle Radio.

The official winning title was Buffalo Soldier by Tanya Landman.

Broadwater’s winning choice was Apple and Rain by Sarah Crossman.

The other six titles were;  The Middle of Nowhere by Geraldine McCaughrean  Cuckoo Song by Frances Hardinge  The Fastest Boy In the World by Elizabeth laird  More Than This by Patrick Ness  Tinder by Sally Gardner  When Mr Dog Bites by Brian Conaghan The scheme was a rewarding experience for all students who took part and has undoubtedly raised the students’ reading confidence and development.

Spanish Immersion Programme

Broadwater students took part in a Spanish Immersion programme in June and July when Spanish students from Valencia spent some time here. During their time in the UK, the Spanish students lived with local British host families and in all cases formed special bonds with both their host families and also with their fantastic Broadwater buddies!

It gave them a fantastic opportunity to develop and practise their English skills, immerse themselves in a different culture, and make lots of new friends that they will hopefully be able to stay in contact with. Many thanks to the Broadwater buddies for taking good care of the students!

GCSE Geography Field Trip

On the 3rd of June, 57 year 10’s headed for the coast to collect primary data for their geography GCSE controlled assessment. We began in Selsey and the students quickly showed that they were well organised and observant. They measured the profile of the beach, investigated what kind of waves were hitting the shore and using a satsuma, measuring tape and stop watch attempted to find out how strong the long shore drift was.

We then moved onto West Wittering for a spot of lunch in the sunshine (it’s always sunny on geography field trips!). The two beaches are quite close to each other but very different, sand at West Wittering compared to pebbles in Selsey. Once again the students worked sensibly and efficiently, collecting good data to turn into a project which is worth 25% of their GCSE. We finished our work with enough time to enjoy an ice cream before boarding the coach back to school.

I couldn’t have been more pleased with the way that the students conducted themselves as they were a credit to the school throughout the entire day.

COIN Centre Trip to the NPL Water Rocket Challenge

Five students from the COIN Centre in Yr 9 were invited by their maths teacher Mrs Link to compete in the NPL Water Rocket Challenge 2015. The students were Richard Banks, Lucy Goodwright, Kathleen Godwin, Brandon Tyrrell and Maria Giles. Their team was called The Rocketeers (very original.) These students had been making rockets since half term.

Since then (before the actual challenge), they had test fired a ton of rockets in the school field and many have had successful trials, though some had leaked and unfortunately failed! At the end of all the trials, they were happy with their rockets.

These rockets were made of plastic fizzy drink bottles which could be pressurised as they were made to hold air pressure. The students added fins to these bottles with duct-tape and tennis balls to make weighted nose cones.

On Wednesday 17th June 2015, these students went to the NPL Water Rocket Challenge at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) grounds in Teddington with Mrs Link. Mrs Jackson drove everyone in the minibus.

They were positioned in Bay 18 out of 40. In the competition, there were three rounds where you could fire as many rockets as you wish. But only the first rocket in each round counted in the recording of the schools’ results. After those first rockets, the other rockets in each round after would be practises only and would help each school/team develop strategy.

Unfortunately, on the day The Rocketeers’ Rocket Launcher was slowly breaking (and causing the bottles to leak) during the contest. This had given them low scores but the group did do great things and had also used all the 4Cs. Creative thinking: Designing rockets and trialling different fin designs.

Critical thinking: Trials on the three different variables  How much water to put in the rockets  The angle of trajectory  What PSI to pressurise the rocket to before launch Then deciding which combination works best in which weather conditions (e.g. heavy rain, wind…)

Caring thinking: Listening to other people’s ideas and being thoughtful about how you challenge these if you disagree with them.

Collaborative thinking: Each person using their different strengths to create the best rockets.

The group had fun doing this project and would like to be involved with it next year.

We already have ideas on how we can improve the launcher and rocket design.

PE & SPORTS NEWS The Year 4 Annual Multi Skills Festival was held at Broadwater on Wednesday 17th June. Pupils from Loseley Fields and St James' schools attended the afternoon session which was led by Broadwater Young Leaders from Years 8 and 7. The afternoon was a huge success. The Young Leaders were fantastic and Year 4 had a great time. Pupils took part in five skills-based fun stations on a rotational basis which developed lots of basic skills. Let’s hope for good weather again next year.

On Thursday 9th July Mrs Fowler took 8 Young Leaders to Chilworth Infants School to run the Annual Year 1 Aquaswim. Pupils from Chilworth Infants, Loseley Fields and Farncombe Infants took part. The pupils’ attitude was fantastic and they all entered into the spirit of the competition. Pupils took part in several swimming races which the young leaders demonstrated. It was yet again a fantastic morning.

The winning school was Chilworth Infants who all received medals.

Second was Farncombe Infants and third was Loseley Fields who both received certificates for their pupils.

Well done to SFE who won the Inter form rounders competition. They beat SJC in the final. This was a popular inter house event which we hope to run again next year.

Well done to the young leaders who helped to umpire at the Primary Schools Cricket Tournament. They found scoring and umpiring at the event quite a challenge. It's not as easy as it looks!

Well done to the 3 pupils who represented Waverley at the Surrey County Athletics Trials at Kingsmeadow stadium on Saturday 13th June. Both Jojo Fyffe and Scott MacKenzie ran very well on the day but didn't win any medals. Oli Dunn threw the javelin and secured second place and a silver medal!

This half term we held a cricket meeting and elected a new chairperson and new committee members. The meeting was very successful and I am sure the new chair person, Adam Lee, will lead the committee really well. He has already been proactive in some of the initial ideas they proposed and we hope to see lots of cricket being promoted next year. If any pupils are interested in being part of the cricket committee please see Mrs Fowler or Adam Lee (year 8) or Morgen Powney (year 9).

We also held a sports council meeting this half term to gather some essential feedback on this year’s sport and ideas about how we can improve for next year from all of the sports representatives from each form.

A special sports assembly was held on Wednesday to recognise the achievement of some of our sports people. The following students received trophies for their hard work and achievement in sport this year.

They were outstanding in this final and won the game meaning they are the District champions!

Well done to the Year 10 Rounders team who beat Rodborough, Woolmer Hill and Glebelands at the Godalming District Tournament. They went on to play George Abbott who were the winners of the Guildford competition, but unfortunately they didn’t win this game!

Every year we select two Young Ambassadors for Sport from Year 10.

This year they will be Laura Hirons and Liam Gadd. Congratulations on taking on this responsibility. They will mainly be promoting sport in school and helping the P.E department.

On the 2nd June Broadwater School had the privilege of taking 26 students from Years 7 – 10 to the Kia Oval for the National Schools Cricket Day. The students who went had been selected as a reward for all their hard work and commitment in P.E. They had a great time. Well done.

Last month saw our annual Sports Day taking place. What a fantastic day. We were very proud of our students who really got into the spirit of it. Many took part in several events and the effort and competition levels were excellent.

A huge thank you to all staff who helped on the day, in particular, Mrs Hatcher who helped with discus and Mr Whitman who helped with starting and for his help in general this year. The site management team have helped out the P.E department all year with minibus runs and on sports day putting up gazebos. Thanks to Mr Hughes for scoring in the afternoon. Also a big thank you to Megan Broad, Lois Older and Hannah Lawson who helped run events all day.

There were some fantastic performances and a few records were broken. Well done to the following pupils who set new school records.

District Sports Well done to all the students that took part and represented the school in the district sports athletics completion at Spectrum in Guildford. There were lots of good individual performances with wins from across the year groups in different events but unfortunately not enough to win an overall category. Thank you as well to all the parents and staff that helped support the event.

Duke of Edinburgh

Following on from the practice expedition in April, the Bronze and Silver Award students went out on their assessed expeditions they have been planning all term. Mr Cook and Mrs Pearson-Jury took the Bronze students to Dorking to navigate around Boxhill in the period of very hot weather. They did very well despite the heat and completed the two day walk without too many difficulties although the final part of the navigation proved a problem for all but one group.

The Silver Award students planned a three day expedition to the New Forest and stayed in campsites around Lyndhurst. They had a great time and faced much tougher navigation in forests and fields with fewer roads and landmarks to guide them but still managed to complete the final day’s walk in good spirits. Art and Design Technology News The summer term is always the busiest for us in the Art and DT faculty with competitions, trips, sets for the school production, photography club and the year 11 exhibition.

The photography club were busy taking photos for the prom and the school production. The addition of the photobooth this year at prom was a huge success!

The prom photos will be available to purchase as prints, canvas or digital copies up until November and will be on display in reception.

The quality of the art and DT final GCSE pieces were of a very high standard this year, we are very proud to have so many talented and creative students. The work will be on display at the Summer Concert.

However unfortunately at the end of this term we will be saying goodbye to Miss Ferris who has made such an impact on the Art department and she will be sorely missed. We wish her the best of luck on her return home to Ireland.

We also say goodbye to Mr Coombes, who after 4 decades of teaching in the DT department at Broadwater is retiring. Many students past and present will remember him with fond memories and anecdotes. My favourite being when we went to Disneyland Paris in 2013 and he went on the rollercoaster Space Mountain 7 times! We hope he enjoys his retirement.

Art and Design Technology News

RBA Art Competition and Visit On July 7th, Year 10 and 11 art students attended a trip to the Royal Society of British Artists National Student Awards in the Mall Galleries London. Our Y11 student Daniel Pink was chosen as a winner of the competition and his work took centre stage in the main gallery space. This is a great achievement and the school has now had students accepted for the exhibition two years running.

Epsom University of the Creative Arts Course Abi Fennymore, Bianca Marie Durac, Gabriela Vadcard Ordaz, Valeria Vadcard Ordaz and Imogen Brewer were selected and attended a 3 day residential Art course in Epsom UCA in June. They studied Fashion and Fashion Journalism. Below are some of the photographs that resulted from the course.

FOOD TECHNOLOGY NEWS THE FEDERATION MASTERCHEF COMPETITION

On Monday 22nd June the Waverley Federation Masterchef competition was held at Glebelands School. The three participating schools were Broadwater, Glebelands and Rodborough. Their task was to produce 窶連 British inspired 3 course meal for the Royals attending Wimbledon' within two hours, on a budget of ﾂ｣15. Each team comprised of two year 9 students. There were six teams in total, two from each school. All of the students worked extremely hard and produced a wide selection of dishes.

Ben Barnett and Paul Ellis came second in the competition. Their menu was mushroom soup with freshly made bread rolls followed by baked honey-mustard salmon served with chantenay carrots and baby new potatoes. Their dessert was a lemon cheesecake decorated with a raspberry and mint leaf.

Isabel Davis and Charlotte Marshall also represented Broadwater. Their menu was a classic prawn cocktail followed by a traditional beef and ale pie served with new potatoes and green beans. Their dessert was a summer strawberry trifle. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Ben, Paul, Isabel and Charlotte on their success and thank them for all the hard work they put in during the preparation stages. Well done!

As the end of the year is approaching I would also like to thank all the parents who have provided ingredients when their child has been cooking. I hope you have enjoyed the products which have been made.

Cricket Committee News We have recently had a meeting about the cricket committee and what our plans are.

At this meeting we allocated new positions for the committee, these positions are: Adam Lee as the new chairman (replacing Ben Barnett), Morgan Powney as vice chairman. Tom Parish will be the new treasurer. New members to the committee include Sophie Williams, Megan Moir, Jack Chubb and Nathan Trigwell, among others.

On Tuesday 14th July we held a lunchtime fundraiser, where we sold cakes and held a raffle. Our plans for next year include events and activities involving the new year 7’s , assemblies, meetings and more fundraisers. Also, next year we will be holding an interform cricket tournament in the sports hall.

Many new rules have been made by the committee about how it should be run, including an equipment log.

Smallholding Trip Despite the rain forecast a small group of intrepid year 8 and 9 students set off to spend a few hours at Mrs Boulter’s small holding. As we arrived we could hear the orphan lambs, Blackie and Chop Chop, bleating for food so we quickly made bottled milk for them and took in turns to feed them. Blackie got so excited he managed to pull the top off the bottle and milk went everywhere! Meanwhile the 6 piglets were squealing with excitement; they realised food was on its way – they ran to greet us looking very funny – pigs aren’t the most graceful of runners! Jeremy and Jamie fed them pig pellets and old vegetables which they demolished.

The two hours flew by: digging up potatoes (thank you for weeding too as you went along!), picking fresh berries to eat, visiting the goats, collecting eggs, shifting sacks of pig food (thanks year 9 boys – we are very grateful) and playing French Boule (Jordon ‘s hidden talent!). My highlight was watching the students cook on a camping stove their own scrambled egg with the eggs they had collected – this was devoured and no one asked for tomato ketchup either!

We all had a great time – I was really proud of how all the students got involved in allotment life whilst smiling and enjoying themselves, they appreciated it’s a special place providing unique experiences.

ECO- NEWS Our Eco Team at Broadwater are committed to taking positive steps towards a sustainable lifestyle and are aware that our actions have a huge impact on the environment. A further step to make Broadwater greener is our participation in a battery recycling scheme.

Young people, such as our students use a large number of batteries and by recycling them we can save the world’s valuable resources and reduce pollution. Batteries are made from important resources and chemicals, including lead, cadmium, zinc, lithium and mercury.

When they are recycled, many of the materials will be recovered and used to make new batteries or something else. If you put your batteries into a rubbish bin they will be taken to landfill sites and the resources lost and the land polluted.

You will find recycling boxes located within the school. – USE THEM! Don’t bin your batteries at home – Bring them into school for recycling. Let’s fill the bins!

The Friends of Broadwater School (FBWS) has been officially recognised as a charity by the Charity Commission. This means that we are eligible to apply for Gift Aid, for grants to charitable trusts and company matched funding schemes. We’ve already started the process of registering for Gift Aid. If the company you work for offers a matched funding program and you help out at one of our events, the company may match the funds raised at the event to double the money raised for our school! Fundraising Update During New Intake Evening the Friends had the pleasure of being on-hand to meet new students and their families. Thanks to your generous donations, we were able to offer a sale of 2nd hand uniform which raised £153 for our school!

Congratulations to all involved in Bugsy Malone. Both performances received standing ovations and were a delight to experience. Your response to our request for raffle prize donations was amazing. We were able to offer 7 prizes each night of the Bugsy performances and those raffles raised a staggering combined total of £280! We’ll let you know when final figure for the funds raised from refreshment sales is known.

Thanks to all the fantastic prefects who helped the Friends with refreshments and the raffle. We couldn’t have done it without them! We still have one more raffle to come taking place during the Summer Concert/Presentation Evening.

The total raised from the final textile recycling collection will be announced when it is known. Thanks to all who brought bags of donations to school.

During the 2nd quarter of this year our 78 Easyfundraising supporters generated donations in the region of £100 (final figure TBC) from online retailers.

Uniform Reminders Broadwater School uniform guidelines are outlined below and I would ask that you keep these in mind if you purchase new items of uniform over the summer. Please remember that fashion trousers (e.g. skinny styles) are not acceptable and we will expect all students to be wearing tailored trousers or the official school skirt in September.

PRACTICAL SUBJECTS Students must wear safety equipment provided by the school in practical subjects when required.

The school reserves the right to confiscate non uniform items and not to accept garments, hairstyles or other aspects of appearance which may adversely affect the good name of the school. In all cases of doubt parents should consult your Leader of Achievement.

Behaviour Levels We are proud that the behaviour of our students remains of the highest standard. Where there are concerns we work hard with everyone involved to re-engage young people in their education.

To this end we are making a few changes next year which I would like to take this opportunity to inform you about. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Attendance at Main School Detentions Students are given at least 24 hours’ notice for any Main School Detentions (MSD) set and notification is via the student diary.



If your child is unable to attend a detention due to personal circumstances contact needs to be made with the school prior to the detention time/date so this can be rescheduled.



If a student does not attend the MSD tutors will be informed who will then be contacting home to see if the student can be returned to school to complete the detention. Tutors will expect to be able to speak to a parent/guardian regarding the lack of attendance within 48 hours of the missed detention.



Students who fail to attend a MSD will spend a day in the ER.



Students who have 3 days in the ER due to failure to attend a MSD will result in a parental meeting in school with the Tutors/Co-Tutors and Leader of Achievement.



Students who have 5 days in the ER due to failure to attend a MSD will result in a parental meeting in school with the Leader of Achievement and Jenny Hanson.

 Students who have 7 days in the ER due to failure to attend a MSD will result in a parental meeting in school with Jenny Hanson and Chris Lee. This may then be followed with a fixedterm exclusion. 

Students who have a further 2 days, totalling 5 days in the ER due to failure to attend a MSD will result in a parental meeting in school with the LoA and Jenny Hanson.



Boccia County Finals Competition

On Thursday 18th June a group of 10 students went to Guildford Sports Park to take part in the Boccia County Finals. It was organised by Surrey School Games.

The day was full competitive games against other schools, all with varying skills and levels of play. The students all embraced the day and worked very well in their teams.

The day ended with medals for the top three teams. Even though we did not get one, the students were very happy to have had the chance to participate.

Broadwater Foodbank Donation Broadwater staff and governors managed to gather together over 120 items for the local food bank supporting local families in need. St Mark’s Foodbank provides emergency food parcels for individuals and families in crisis for three to five days. The Broadwater contribution was very well received and we hope to do the same again in the future.

Student Services Update New Medical Conditions Policy As part of accepted good practice and with advice from the Department for Children, Schools and Families, relevant voluntary organisations and the school’s governing bodies, our school has established a new medical conditions policy for use by all staff.

As part of this new policy, we will be asking all parents of children with a medical condition to help us by completing a school Healthcare Plan for their child/children.

If you receive a Healthcare Plan please complete the plan, with the assistance of your child’s healthcare professional, and return it to the school.

If medication is needed in school a form will now need to be completed and handed in, along with the medication which needs to be in its original box. Lost Property

Any uncollected items in lost property will be donated to charity on Friday 11th September.

ATTENDANCE Please note below guidance that has been issued by Surrey County Council that I need to draw to your attention.

Penalty Notices to Address Poor Attendance at School A Penalty Notice may be issued as an alternative to the prosecution of a parent/carer for their child’s unauthorised absence from school and will be used by Surrey County Council in the following circumstances:1. Pupils identified by police and education welfare officers engaged on Truancy Patrols and who have incurred unauthorised absences.

2. Leave of absence in term time (5 days or 10 sessions or more). Please be aware that The Education (Pupil Registration)(England)(Amendment) Regulations 2013, which becomes law on 1st September 2013 state that Headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. The Headteacher is also required to determine the number of school days a child can be away from school if leave is granted.

In such cases the Headteacher/Governing Body have to judge whether there are exceptional circumstances and may request that the Local Authority issue Penalty Notices when the absence is not authorised.

Warnings will not be given where it can be shown that parents have been notified that such absences will not be authorised.

3. The issue of a Penalty Notice will also be considered where it is judged that a parent is failing to ensure their child's regular school attendance. This will be considered if the attendance is below 85% and there are 10 or more unauthorised sessions in the previous 6 school weeks, which may include a pupil arriving late after close of registration.

If you believe at any stage that your child’s absence from school may leave you liable to receive a Penalty Notice, it is extremely important that you take action without delay to secure their regular attendance. If you have any questions or require further support to achieve an improvement, please contact the school or the Education Welfare Officer.

Penalty Notice relating to Exclusions If a child is excluded from school, Section 103 of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 places a duty on parents/carers to ensure that their child is not in a public place without justifiable cause during school hours. This duty applies to the first five days of each exclusion. Failure to do so will render the parent/carer liable to a Penalty Notice. (Alternative education provision will be made available from the sixth day of any exclusion.)

Amount Payable for a Penalty Notice The amount payable for a Penalty Notice issued in any of the above circumstances is £60 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the Notice, rising to £120 if paid after 21 days but within 28 days. If the Penalty Notice is not paid, the recipient will be prosecuted in the Magistrates Court for the offence for which the Notice was originally issued.

Please be aware that each parent is liable to receive a Penalty Notice for each child who incurs unauthorised absences; for example, if there are two parents and one child, each parent will receive one Penalty Notice. If there are two parents and two children incur unauthorised absences, each parent will receive two Penalty Notices, which in this case would amount to £120 each if paid within 28 days.
