Students enjoying the challenge of the slopes at Torgon, Switzerland

Dear Parents, March 31st was the start of a special week at Broadwater. This is the second time the school has run ‘Challenge Week’; a week specifically designed to take students out of the comfort of their normal timetable and present them with new challenging activities which they are unlikely to have tried before.

There were a variety of on and off-site activities to take part in. Residential trips included skiing in Switzerland, an eco-sustainability project in East Meon and a multi-activity break with PGL in the Isle of Wight. Year 10 students had the opportunity to take on work experience and Year 11s concentrated on revision workshops, with a tenpin bowling trip as a treat at the end of the week.

The school was a hive of activity with projects such as Create your own Country, Bridge Building, Dance Workshops, The Great Bread Bake-Off, Disability Workshops and Sporting Challenges. There were also day trips to Alice Holt and Runways End. It was great to see the students demonstrating new skills in leadership, selfreflection and teamwork. Broadwater School promotes the 4Cs - Creativity, Caring, Collaboration and Critical – and these aspects were much in evidence during the week. Challenge Week helped the students understand that failure is not negative as long as you learn from it and try to improve on your past performance.

The final day culminated in a celebration assembly where experiences of the week were shared and prizes awarded. It was an excellent week with many positive comments from staff, students and parents.

The next challenge facing our Year 11 students are the GCSE exams taking place this term and we would like to wish our students much success in these. There are many revision sessions running for Year 11 students so please encourage your child to attend.

East Meon: Hiking and Den Building challenges

Challenge Week: Sustainability Trip at East Meon We took 22 students to the Sustainability Centre at East Meon for 3 days at the beginning of Challenge Week.

The students and staff attempted many new and challenging activities over our time there including transporting all members of a team and their equipment across a lava flow(roped off area), bicycle powered smoothie making and a five mile hike.

The students worked well together and supported each other to complete each challenge. They also made good use of their free time playing rounders and other team games, having an evening round the campfire playing games and singing.

We all enjoyed the many and varied activities and thank the centre staff for providing such an interesting and challenging visit.

Challenge Week: Sensational Skiing in Switzerland

On the 28th March, 50 Year 7, 8 and 9 students arrived at school drowning under the weight of ski jackets, blankets, pillows, Mp3s and masses of sugary snacks. The purpose of these items? Essential life saving equipment for the coach journey to Torgon, Swizerland.

19 hours later some very sleepy teenagers and frankly exhausted staff arrived for the trip of a lifetime. We were immediately ushered in to get our skis and boots fitted to equip us for the challenges ahead.

Day 1 saw the students placed in groups set by experience on the slopes and we all headed over the road to begin our skiing experience. Many of the students this year were complete beginners, others had skied for just a couple of hours at the snow dome, but this did not stop their enthusiasm or determination to master their snow ploughs.

One of the biggest challenges and shocks was the heat! Brilliant sunshine and 18C meant that many students found themselves somewhat overdressed. Jackets came off and sun cream went on and up and down that mountain we went.

Due to the very mild winter, ski resorts all over Europe were closing and although some of the snow conditions were quite challenging we skied every day and the sheer array of runs was simply breath-taking.

In schools we are judged by progress the students are making. As I watched our students move from complete novices to competent skiers I wanted to shout “Where are you now OFSTED?” . I will have an enduring memory of one group standing at the top of a mountain looking down a very steep red run, the colour draining from their cheeks as they realised that there was only way to get down that mountain - to ski. None of these students had skied for more than 2 hours before. The pride I felt as each one of them, with their own particular styles, managed to make it down that mountain, and the smiles on their faces at the bottom, and the encouragement and support they gave each other are memories that will stay with me for a very long time.

The evening activities were fantastic including; a trip to the thermal Baths, a night mastering the climbing wall, and of course the obligatory disco. The 80s roller disco was also a highlight and I’m happy to report that our school won ‘best in season’ for their efforts with fancy dress. Well done parents for keeping all those fluorescent leg warmers – we promise we won’t share your secrets.

I would like to thank the staff, Miss Cooper, Mrs Pearson-Jury, Mr Hughes, Miss Regan, and Mr Cook for working so hard during the trip and taking such excellent care of the students. It is indicative of their work ethic that, although I encouraged them all to take at least one evening off, all the staff chose not to, preferring to stay with the students and join in the activities.

Finally, I would like to say what an absolute pleasure it was to accompany the students on this trip. Their attitudes and behaviour were exemplary. The staff at the ‘Ski Company’ commented on how fantastic our students were and how they wished all schools were like ours! I couldn’t agree more!

Challenge Week: PGL Visit to the Isle of Wight The PGL Challenge Week visit this year was fantastic!

The first challenge we faced was getting two coaches and a ferry to our destination – the students were incredibly patient waiting at each stage, when we finally arrived at Little Canada it was not long before we were involved in team games and an orienteering exercise to find our way around!

Every day was jam packed with 5 activities, 4 during the day and 1 at night. We were split into 4 groups with a member of staff and then came back together for our meal times and free time. The food was excellent with hot and cold choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

The range of activities we did varied each day and every group completed them all over the course of the week these included: Zip Wire, Jacobs Ladder, Archery, Tunnel Trail, Fencing, Survivor, Quad Biking and Aqua games to name a

few. Facing our fears was a big theme of the week with students braving high climbs and pitch black tunnels! All students were involved and best of all in their groups encouraged and motivated each other to have a go and try. The team work and support helped the students to overcome and conquer – the teachers did not get off lightly as we all took part in (most) activities and found ourselves being thrown in the pool or being launched from tall poles!

Evening activities were a little less energetic with team games including bin bag fashion, advertising random objects and toasting marshmallows on the campfire. The hi-light was the final night Disco and watching the Year 9 Boys showing off their dance moves and getting students from other schools involved too!

The week was great fun and so well organised by PGL that students and staff alike could relax and enjoy all that Little Canada had to offer. You can tell from the pictures we had an amazing time and in the words of one student ‘I wish Challenge Week was a fortnight!’

Disability Awareness Challenge 2014

Challenge week is an exciting week for the SEN department as we get to work with students that we don’t usually get to meet in the everyday life of the school. This year we worked with approximately 60 year 7 students on the Monday and Tuesday of challenge week. Our main challenge for the two days was to open the students’ eyes to ‘see’ not just the visible disabilities of someone who is confined to a wheelchair but also to ‘see’ the invisible disabilities of someone who has Autism (ASD).

Our students are always lovely; very supportive and understanding of students with an obvious disability. The recent adaptations to the school site along with last year’s Paralympics in London has mean that we have all been thinking about physical disability but we all too often fail to see hidden disabilities like ASD or dyslexia. In fact one of our speakers, Faye, explained how depressed she had felt when she was rejected by so many of her friends when she was at school simply because she had ASD. She described her disability as being in the brain and that, because her school friends couldn’t ‘see’ her disability, they called her all kinds of names. However, when Faye asked our year 7 students how they could make a difference the response was overwhelming and very heartening. Many claimed that they would include people more if they knew they had Autism and most stated that someone should not be excluded from friendship groups because they have ASD; all as a result of listening to the two speakers Ross and Faye.

To support our thinking of ways to include people with disability we played some of the games our Sportability group use when they meet every Wednesday. Boccia,

seated volleyball, a blindfold obstacle course and restricted football were introduced to the students and by the sound from the sports hall they had a great time!

Students then completed work booklets based on what they had learnt and made a movie about their experiences which other students were given the chance to view on the last day of the challenge week. We definitely have some budding Steven Spielbergs at Broadwater!

It was a great two days and I would like to thank all the support staff and teachers who made the challenge possible, the two speakers Faye and Ross and most importantly the students who took part. I can definitely say, hand on heart, challenge achieved!

Year 10 Work Experience During the week 31st March – 4th April the year 10 students experienced their first taste of the world of work. A variety of placements took place ranging from working with young children in schools to working at the Getty Museum in the USA. The students acquired new skills and faced a number of challenges.

I thought I would share a few comments with you from the employers about our students: “It has been a pleasure having Megan at St. Edmund’s this week. She has been very helpful and developed lovely relationships with staff and pupils.”

“Hannah was very helpful, undertaking any tasks asked of her. She was polite and eager to help.”

“A thoroughly positive attitude to all work undertaken.”

“A lovely, well-mannered and enthusiastic girl. I was impressed with her attitude to work. I would be delighted to have Jade on our team.”

Once again our students were fantastic ambassadors for the school and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for all their hard work and enthusiasm.

PE News Broadwater hosted the Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 Hockey Festival on Tuesday 4th March. It was an excellent event. The effort put in by the pupils was exceptional. Schools who attended were Tillingbourne, Chandler, St James and St Barts. Broadwater’s Young Leaders helped run the event, refereed the games and kept the score board. They were amazing. Well done to Tillingbourne who won.

The Annual Year 2 Badminton Festival was also held this half term and yet again Broadwater’s Young Leaders were outstanding. Pupils from Farncombe Infants, Chilworth Infants, Loseley Fields and Moss Lane came along to the event and had a great time and learnt some new skills. The winners overall were Farncombe Infants who received medals. Well done!

On Wednesday 26th March Broadwater hosted the Annual Dance Festival. Pupils from Moss Lane, Farncombe Infants and Chilworth Infants schools came along and took part in a day of dance. They learnt 4 different dances and then selected one to perform. Approximately 100 pupils were involved and it is always a thoroughly enjoyable day. We had 4 professional dance teachers in school to help deliver the sessions and we hope it is a festival we can continue to run in future years. Well done to the Young Leaders who assisted with this event.

Young Leaders from all years helped me to deliver a fantastic sports morning to gifted and talented pupils from some of our local schools. Pupils from St James, Godalming Junior, The Chandler, St Bart's, Busbridge and Tillingbourne primary schools attended the morning and took part in hockey, benchball, badminton, handball and trampolining. It was a wonderful morning of exceptional sport and the Young Leaders yet again were a credit to the school.

Well done to our swimming squad who attended the Waverley and Ash Swimming Gala on Tuesday 18th March. We did very well but the standard was very high this year so unfortunately we didn’t bring home a trophy. However, it was a great competitive event.

Well done to the Year 8 netball team who came joint 5th with Rodborough at the District Netball Tournament which was held here at Broadwater. 10 schools attended so the girls did very well. A big thank you to Lewis MarGaillan who helped run the scoreboard for me that day giving up his own time on academic profiling day! Our Year 7 netball team also came 5th, again out of 10 teams – well done to them too. The tournament was also held here at Broadwater and this time a big

thank you to Rose Kneller and Laura Hirons who gave up their own time to run the scoreboard.

This term we have been lucky to have 2 cricket coaches from Farncombe Cricket Club coming into lessons on a Monday morning to deliver some cricket sessions to years 7, 8 and 9. Hopefully, some students will be keen to get involved with Farncombe Cricket Club after Easter and also with Broadwater’s new business cricket venture!

We also had a dance teacher come into lessons on one Monday morning to deliver some specialised dance sessions. The teacher was from ‘Bop it’ Dance School; if any students would like more information about this see the P.E department for a flier.

Waverley Youth Games are fast approaching. If any students want to be involved, please see the P.E department for a leaflet of what you can do, where and when.

Students can also get involved in leadership work if they prefer. On offer this year is rugby, squash, swimming, badminton, basketball, judo, lacrosse, netball and table tennis. Something for everyone, so make sure you get involved.

Well done to everyone who got involved in the Sport Relief mile on Friday 21st March. We held a mufti day and students and staff ran 1 mile around the field at lunchtime to raise money for charity. There was an excellent turnout and in total we raised over £500.

Sport Relief Fun Run

Thanks to Godalming Bowls Club who came in and delivered a taster session to students last week. Any students who would like to join their club need to see the P.E department for more details.

The Inter House competition is closer than ever this year. This half term we have had Inter house Badminton and Table tennis.

The Y8 and 9 leaders ran gymnastics skills and routines with Year 1 pupils; our students were again fantastic and the session was thoroughly enjoyed by the younger pupils.

The year 7 football team delivered a great team performance on Tuesday 18th March with Luca Punter-Cannon getting MOTM and Josh Gilbert scoring to make the game 1-1 after Woolmer Hill went ahead in the first half. The students have worked very hard in training and their fitness seemed to be better than the other team and towards the end of the game were unlucky not to score again. Well done to all of the students involved including Year 9s Scott Mackenzie and Jay Lawson who assisted the referee.

Year 11 footballers beat Woolmer hill 2-1 with a convincing win on Wednesday 19th March. MOTM was Robert Voller. Well done to all the players.

March 6th – Well done to our Y9 U14 team who won 1-0 against Woolmer Hill. They won with a great team goal where the ball was passed by 7 different players before being scored by Scott Mackenzie.

Para Games at Charterhouse School On the Wednesday of Challenge Week, 14 leaders from Broadwater School spent the afternoon learning how to be leaders and deliver several sports specifically adapted for children with Special Educational Needs. On the Thursday of Challenge week these leaders then spent the day at Charterhouse Sports Centre helping to run Waverley's first Para Games. The leaders helped deliver Sportshall Athletics, Seated Volleyball, Boccia, Skittles, Pollybat, Table Cricket and New Age Curling. Over 100 SEN pupils attended and had a fabulous time. The event was organised by Jeremy Hunt and was attended by the Mayor of Waverley and several other VIP guests.

Rachel Morris opened the ceremony and had 2 Olympic medals with her which several students held. 4 of our students took part in the event and had a fantastic time. All students got free T - Shirts and learnt a great deal about adapted sports.

It was a fantastic event and we hope it will happen again next year.

Level 1 P4C Qualification A selection of students from year groups ranging 7 - 10 were chosen to complete the Level 1 Sapere Philosophy for Children (P4C) 2 day course, alongside 8 teachers from Broadwater and other schools. This is nationally recognised qualification for teachers and we are one of only 2 schools in the entire country to train our students to this level. This course is essentially aimed at qualified teachers so it was initially quite daunting.

The course teaches the participants to become great facilitators for P4C enquiries, which are held every few weeks in school. The duration of the course was a mix of talking about what makes a good philosophical question, how to plan and run a P4C enquiry, how to build upon each others ideas, and to develop a better understanding of how to structure a question or statement.

The course also had an underlying focus on the "4C's"; Critical, Creative, Collaborative, and Caring thinking. We were taught how to be critical of others’ views and opinions, by asking them to "clarify what they mean" or "to give some points to support your view". We came to the conclusion that questions and statements can be ranked in an order; those which are backed up and supported at the top - those with no evidence or support at the bottom. Knowing this, we were able to think clearly about how we were going to structure our statements and give good reasons on why we think they're correct.

Another thing we discovered was that some statements are assumed, for example when Will Ord (the course tutor) drew a few lines on a piece of paper and asked "what is it?" whilst pointing towards the lines, we all came up with plenty of creative ideas as to what they could be. However, only after we all revealed what we thought it was, did he say that he could have been talking about the paper - we assumed he had meant the lines. We will remember in the future not to make assumptions without asking questions first.

Our next step is to plan and run P4C enquiries with our peers and co facilitate the enquiries with our teachers.

Monday’s Fun Club

The finished decorative clocks made for Mother’s Day by some of our students of Monday’s Fun Club.

Other forthcoming fun activities will include planting grow-your-own lettuce and tomato plants as well as growing other plants from seed to add to our proposed Eco garden. If interested come along and join in with the fun.

Sport Relief: Staff Fundraising Staff at the school raised money for Sport Relief with the Admin Staff Bake-Off, Mufti, Sweepstake and Cake Raffle.

The fantastic ‘Trophy’ cake was made and donated by Mrs Pearson-Jury.

Altogether staff raised over £160 for the charity.

The SEN team came out in force to support the Sports Relief 1 mile run. We were even joined by the more mature member in our team who is 63 (I will leave you to guess who that is!). All had great fun for a really good cause.

Information Communication Technology and Computing Years 8 & 9 have been spending time working on developing Apps with the help of experts using Skype. Students have had the opportunity this term to talk to either an expert face to face or to use Skype to get experts’ advice on their app ideas and development. We have talked to experts from the Netherlands as well as experts from the USA. We are lucky enough that one of the experts from the USA we spoke to recently will be visiting the school to talk to some students in May when he comes over on a business trip, as he was that impressed with their ideas. We are all very excited about this in the department. In an email I received recently I was told that our students were “incredibly articulate and great ambassadors for Broadwater” Year 10 Computer Science Trip On Friday 7th March 2014 fifteen of the year 10 GCSE Computer Science group went to the University of Surrey to take part in an event called ‘Secure Futures’. During the day the group learnt about Cyber security and its importance and how it links to e-safety. They also learnt about different types of computer hacking and different types of cryptography and how it is used in computing. At the end of the day the students were asked to recall the information they had learnt during the day and took part in a quiz. I am pleased to announce that Broadwater School came first, so well done to the Year 10 Computer Science group that went.

Broadwater School’s Cricket Academy!

Broadwater have been lucky enough to be selected as a Satellite School in a new Surrey Cricket project! We have been given money to set up a cricket club which is to be run as a business to ensure it continues to run after the funding ends. We have appointed a committee made up of students from all years. Every student had the opportunity to apply for a position on the committee. After carefully reading all applications the below appointments were made.

Congratulations to all students selected. The committee has already met several times and are slowly beginning to make decisions and form plans.

We are trying to get local primary schools to join in with the events that will be taking place during Cricket Week around the 6th of June. There will be a week of cricket themed days including inside of lessons where we are trying to get some of the teachers to make tasks to do with cricket.

In Summer term, lunch time and after school cricket club practices will be taking place and some external coaches coming into school. We will also be running some Cricket competitions. The cricket committee have their own noticeboard and computer room to work in. Every week there will be a planned day for each year, one for boys and one for girls. Anyone can join in and we hope students will consider joining in on the events that are taking place this term. Please keep your eyes on the Cricket Academy notice board in the P.E corridor for updates on what’s going on.

We will soon be running a writing competition, as detailed below. This will be run in English lessons but everyone can take part. If you would like to enter please bring your entry to our Chairman Lewis Margaillan or Crystal Beagley our Managing Director. If you are confused about the competition please see Mr Hull or Mrs Fowler who are running the writing challenge; many prizes can be won so give it a try. Details of the competition are below.

SCB – Schools Writing Competition 2014 The closing date for entries is Friday 6th June 2014.

As part of the Chance to Shine Scheme and the National Cricket Day the Surrey Cricket Board is pleased to announce that it is running a writing competition for 6-14 year olds.

The competition encourages children to use cricket as a theme within their writing. This can be done in the following number of ways (although not exclusively!): 

Broadwater’s Got Talent

Broadwater School’s students, staff and parents were treated to an evening of entertainment on March 25th with the aptly named ‘Broadwater’s Got Talent’. The talent competition was organised by Performing Arts teachers Miss Collette Cooper and Mrs Susan Looseley. Students were encouraged to compete against each other to win House points, with an added incentive that the winners would have a chance to go through to the final ‘Surrey School’s Have Talent’ taking place in the summer.

Auditions to represent each House took place in early March and the best acts were chosen to perform at the show.

Students Jevon Napper and Daniel Kneller hosted the event and the stage was set for an exciting evening. The finalists produced an impressive range of performances, from cheerleading and acting to singing and dancing. A mostly student audience

added to the fantastic atmosphere with their support, encouragement and applause for every performer, regardless of House!

The judges, Miss Mary Gallacher and Mr David Dray from the Godalming Theatre Group and Mr Chris Lee, Headteacher, had a difficult task choosing between the acts. But the final decision was unanimous and Maria Giles, with her passionate performance of ‘Skyfall’, was announced as the winner. Jake Macfarlane came second with his monologue from ‘Blood Brothers’ and Nathan Trigwell, Charlotte Musk and Sean Brown took third place with a Harry Potter style comedy song!

The evening was a huge success and an opportunity for the students to show off their talents. One parent remarked, ‘It was really fun, one big school family night.’

Headteacher, Chris Lee commented, ‘As one of the judges in Broadwater’s Got Talent I was overwhelmed by the standard of performances and found it a real challenge to pick the winners as it was a very closely fought competition. I was impressed by the range of talents shown with groups dancing to individuals singing to acting performances.’

The winners and participants all received certificates and much praise for their performances – next stop the Surrey finals!

ECO-SCHOOL NEWS

Community Garden Our Eco-Team are in the planning stages of starting a Community Garden. We have already started a vegetable patch for some of our students and had considered the idea of sharing some of our land with local people who wanted an allotment but at the suggestion of the Godalming Town Clerk, Ms Louise Goodfellow, we have decided instead to try to create a garden for the local community.

The vision is that the garden will be developed by local people in a voluntary capacity. The volunteers involved will be hopefully deciding what to plant and what to harvest, ie, community food growing. This way local people will be able to make a positive contribution to the environment and our community will benefit.

We are at present aiming to gauge interest and support.

We are hoping for a mix of people with everyone contributing, so;    

Want something to do on your day off?

Are you unemployed / retired / experienced / want the chance to learn?

Don’t have a garden of your own and want to get involved with the local community?

Get involved. – It’s your neighbourhood!
