WOODLANDS NURSERY

This Half Term we have had so much pleasure from exploring our new garden area. The children have been tending to our potatoes and apple trees, making potions and mud kitchen treats, looking after the babies and using their imaginations.

RECEPTION ROUND UP

As part of our Minibeast topic, Reception have been learning all about the lifecycle of a butterfly. This has been a very hands on learning experience because, from the beginningofterm,Receptionhavehadtheir very own caterpillars to look after in the classroom! The children have really enjoyed observing the caterpillars as they have grownandfounditfascinatingwheneachof the caterpillars began to make their own chrysalis!

There was great excitement when the children entered the classroom and saw that every butterfly, but one, had emerged from its chrysalis. After close observation of the beautiful butterflies, and lots of interesting discussion, the class went out to the edge of the Forest. The children found someniceflowersforthemtoreston. After that, the children were able to gently hold the butterflies in their hands before placing them onto the flowers! A fabulous end to ourMinibeasttopic!

YEAR 2 ROUND UP

At the start of term Year 2 took one small step into our new topic of space before making a giant leap intheirlearning!Questionsandnewlylearnedfacts abounded as we compared the historical figures of Neil Armstrong and Tim Peake. We excitedly watched live as China’s Chang'e - 6 mission launchedtowardsthemoonandenjoyedstorytime from the International Space Station! (Do look it up.)

Our investigative Science skills were stretched as we carried out a Moon Crater Experiment using different sized balls and flour to replicate impacts. Using our existing knowledge we made predictions, recorded results and discussed our discoveries provingourdeepthinking.

Linked beautifully to our maths topic of measure, thechildrenalsousedtheirDTskillstocreatepaper rockets which they propelled using a straw before measuring the distance travelled in metres and centimetres. Would launching from a sitting, kneelingorstandingpositionmakeadifference?

Thanks to Mrs Lynch for creating a buzz outside 2B with Gardening Club's blooming beds. It has been a pleasure to see adults and children of all ages enjoying smelling the herbs and watching the progressoftheseedlings.

WeendedtheHalfTermashistorydetectivesaswe explored Beechwood Park in search of evidence of its past, both at home and at school. Old photos especially helped us to identify elements that had changed or stayed the same. In the library, helped by a link pupil, we excitedly discovered artefacts of old books with name plates proving that there was a school here before Beechwood Park! A visit along thecellarsunderthemainschoolwasofcoursethe highlight of the topic. Watching the children confidently explore the school suggests that they are nearly ready to be launched into the Middle Department!

YEAR 3 ROUND UP

The Summer Term in Year 3 continues to be one of growth and anticipation. The highlight of Year 3: Wellyboot Camp 2024. For the Year 3 children, this is was an amazing opportunity to come together as a year group, and spend two fun-packed days outside in our glorious school grounds. For many, it was the very first night they have ever spent away from their family. For some, it was the first night under canvas. Either way, the Year 3 team worked so hard to ensure that the children had an amazing adventure, with memories to share for years to come.

In science, we have been learning about food chains and classification in the animal kingdom. The Year 3's have also been learning about some inspirational scientists, such as Maria Sybilla Merian, a remarkable woman born in 1647 who was one of the first people to depict the life cycles of insects and their food plants. Learning about Maria also gave us a wonderful opportunity for art, and they worked hard to create their own butterflies for display.

Our Topic, this term, has been the Romans in Britain, which the children have enjoyed immensely. Our local Roman town of Verulamium (St Albans) has inspired us to become creative in our learning, With the help of some of our Top Form Scholars, we have been incorporating Latin into the menus we created for some pretty impressive Roman restaurants opening up in Verulamium. The children loved playing with the language and really loved the support of the Top Formers. We are very much looking forward to our Roman Day in June!

YEAR 3 & 4 VERSE SPEAKING AND CHOIR PERFORMANCES

At last week’s Open Classroom event, Year 3 and 4, led by the choir gave a wonderful performance of The Emerald Crown. They sang five songs that explored the issues of deforestation in the Amazon and the wildlife affected. The Choir gave a beautiful rendition of ‘It takes a Hundred Years’ and we were all highly entertained by the pupils’ monkey masks in Jungle Disco.

The children in each Year 3 and 4 class also worked collaboratively to stage a Roald Dahl poem. They had lots of fun adding actions and acting out the different tales, which included a vengeful Little Red Riding Hood and an unfortunate situation with a porcupine and a dentist! The audience were thoroughly entertained with the children’s confident and highly expressive performances. Amazing acting everyone!

YEAR 4 ROUND UP THE RESULTS

SCIENCE

Eggs-periment!

As part of our topic on teeth in Science, Year 4 carried out an eggs-periment on eggs! Did you know that the outside ofaneggismadeofthesamematerialasourteeth?!They are both made of enamel! With this in mind, Year 4 decided to investigate the effect different liquids would haveonourteeth(oreggs!).

METHOD

We got five beakers and five eggs, we put an egg in each beaker.OurYear4eggs-pertsthengotthefivebeakersand poured Coke into one, Coke and fluoride into another and thenwater,DietCokeandvinegarintotheotherthree. We thenwaited5daysfortheresults!

After waiting patiently the Year 4’s were very enthusiastic to see the results of their eggs-periment. Some of the results were un-eggspected! The egg in water had not changed at all - though it was a bit wet! The egg in Coke had been stained brown and the egg felt rough and could be scratched away. The fluoride had stained the egg brown but the shell felt hard and could not be scratched away easily. The egg in Diet Coke was surprisingly quite brown but the shell felt firmer and smoother and could not be scratched away. The egg in vinegar had gone very soft and we could almost see through it as lots of the shell had peeled off. We were even able to bounce it like a bouncy ball, until it burst open!

OUR CONCLUSIONS

We found out that sugar and acid attack enamel in our teeth and it is very important to brush our teeth twice a day. Fluoride, which is in our water and toothpaste can helppreventtoothdecay.

DISCLOSING TABLETS

We also investigated the plaque on our teeth by using disclosing tablets. The tablets turned our teeth purple allowing us to see where all of the plaque was. Then we had to brush our teeth as well as we could to get rid of all the plaque and turn them white again! Take a look at our colourfulphotos!

AND FINALLY

This Half Term has flown by and we cannot believe that we are about to start our final half term together! We hope you all have a super relaxing holiday and we are looking forwardtoseeingyouallinJune!

YEAR 5 ROUND UP

Once upon a time there was a Year 5 group who put a spin on the classic fairy tale and packed a punchwiththeirperformances.ThisHalfTermsaw each form group take on a different classic and parents were presented their interpretations in a fabulous morning performance. The pupils choreographed and planned their performances under the watchful eye of Mrs Hegarty and they enjoyed every moment of the preparation and performance.

SummerTermbringscricketandlotsoffixturefun. Some pupils have played hard ball and others soft ball, but skills throughout have been developing and we have enjoyed a few moments of sunshine for our fixtures. The boys team had fantastic success winning the St Albans U10 cricket tournament.

The better weather has brought some opportunities for taking our learning outside, with angles and reflections being investigated in maths along with sound and light in science. We had a lovely afternoon in Forest School, den building and art all washed down with an ice lolly in the sun… perfection.

WelookforwardtothesecondhalfoftheSummer Term and we are excited for the adventure it will bring.

YEAR 6 ROUND UP

Beechwood Park’s Speaking Out Challenge: "I HaveaDream..."

This year, Year 6 participated in the Beechwood Park Speaking Out Challenge with the theme "I Have a Dream...". The English Department selected two contestants to represent Beechwood Park in the final competition. The event was a delightful showcase of talent, with outstanding speeches. We are proud to announce that Serena R from Beechwood Park School, along with Sienna V from Edge Grove School, both won the competition! It was a fantastic achievementandatestamenttothehardwork anddedicationofourstudents.

YEAR 6 ROUND UP CONTINUED

Year6hadthepleasureofvisitingthehistoric Bletchley Park. The students enjoyed an informative tour around the impressive grounds, journeying into the past and discoveringthesignificanceandhistoryofthis iconicsite.

During their visit, Year 6 participated in an exciting "Interception to Intelligence" workshop, enhancing their knowledge and understanding of World War II events and BletchleyPark’scrucialroleintheBattleofthe Atlantic.Theybecamecodebreakersforaday, intercepting and deciphering German Naval communications. This hands-on experience also introduced them to the importance of cyber security, allowing them to apply a wide range of mathematical principles while learningaboutpersonalsecurity.

The final part of the trip included a thrilling "treasure hunt" around the beautiful grounds of Bletchley Park. The students navigated the site, solving clues to find hidden treasure. It wasanamazingandmemorableadventurefor everyoneinvolved!

YEAR 7 ROUND UP

It has been a busy Half Term for the Year 7 pupils and I am sure that they are all looking forwardtotheirwell-deservedholiday.

The Sky Studio trip was a particular highlight, with pupils thoroughly engaged throughout the whole day. It culminated in a super video which every pupil participated in producing whether it was presenting, script writing, directing or filming. Thank you to Mrs Waiting fororganisingthisamazingdayout.

Year 7 also enjoyed the Artist In Residence, Darrell Wakelam, who inspired them to get involved with the production of a beautiful pictureofourmagnificentbuilding.

The everyday life of Year 7 has been busy with lots to learn in lessons such as; in History Y7 have studied the Tudor period, moving from MaryItoElizabethI.Ithasbeeninterestingfor them to consider different female rulers and ties in nicely with our trip to Shakespeare's Globe Theatre that took place before the Easterbreak.

In French they have been learning about the topic of food and drink, alongside developing key exam skills. They have used their new vocabulary to play games, including sentence stealer, and to write about the food they like, would like to eat and have eaten. They have continued to develop their understanding of the present, perfect and future tenses too. Year 7 have also continued to enjoy the challenge and fun of learning Spanish. They have learnt how to count to 100 and how to saywhatsomeonedoesasajob.

In Science they have been learning all about the growth and reproduction of green plants. We also studied the chicks in science which is alwaysfun!

There has of course been a theme of exams thisHalfTermwhichwewillallbegladtoleave behind. Whether it was music or academic the childrenhaveworkedsoincrediblyhard.

Whenthesunhasbeenshiningthepupilshave been outside for breaks and enjoyed playing in thesunshine.

I hope you all have a lovely Half Term holiday and fingers crossed for better weather when wecomeback!

Theoldestpupilsintheschoolhavecontinued to wow audiences with their confidence, musicianship and incredibly expressive acting skills. They have enjoyed performing and speaking at Open Morning and in lunchtime concerts. Issac and Jamie relished the opportunitytoperformtheirfavouriteGrade5 monologues to an audience of appreciative parents. It's great that they're not too grown up to enjoy meeting the chicks in Science lessonsthough!

Yet again, they volunteered to be wonderful ambassadorsforBeechwoodParkatthethird, and somewhat soggy, Forest Fun morning for local parents and toddlers. The Top Form supervised seed planting, helped serve refreshments, leadthewayonthestickertrail andhelpedwiththecreationofsomeamazing stick and ribbon magic wands. A ROUND UP FROM FOREST SCHOOL

What better way to spend a wet afternoon than in the woods! Woodlands found out how much fun puddles can be and developed their resilience as they got wetter and muddier!

Reception love discovering all sorts of things in the woods from changes in theplantsandtrees, tobugstryingto hideunderlogs!

Year 1 continued their learning about fractions from their maths lessons; they worked together to make an enormous square with sticks, split it into equal quarters and then found a waytofilleachquarter.

2LW were lucky to have a super sunny afternoon of mindfulness in the woods; each person found their own special spot and enjoyed listening, thinking, watchingordrawing.

Whittling is a popular activity and Year 3 have progressed from using peelers to knives; they showed excellent safety awareness, persevered with a tricky task and were all successful in makingawoodenquill.

Year 4 had lots of new skills to learn in their recent Forest School sessions; they learnt how to tie a clove hitch and then worked with someone to lash three sticks to make a tripod. After that their creativity came out in abundance as they created mini shelters (and even some fortresses forourlittleanimals).

On a sunny Friday afternoon, Year 5 were lucky enough to spend some time working in teams to put up a tarp shelter or create a spoked wheel with paracord and sticks, which was then decorated to make land art. Lots of fresh air, nature, skillsandenjoyment!

Year 6, 7 and Top Form all have Forest School to lookforwardtonexthalfterm.

PUPIL WELLBEING AT BEECHWOOD PARK

At Beechwood Park we place a strong emphasis on the importance of Mental Health and pupil well-being. Thisterm, wehadabrilliantFindYour Bounce week where we spoke to children about the importance of building resilience. In our assemblies, our fabulous school nurses spoke about the interchangeable feelings between being physically unwell and having low resilience. They spoke abouthowtorecognisethisandwhat the children can do to help themselves – WOW (water, outside, wait).

Aspartofthisweek,DrKathyWeston led an insightful webinar all about helping children to build emotional resilience

– a brilliant way of helping children build that emotional resilience and how to deal with the uncomfortable feelingoflosing!

The 13th of May was the start of National Mental Health Awareness week and we marked this by giving the Middle and Senior department a “You Choose” activity session. A chance to spend 30 minutes out of theirdaydoingsomethingthatmakes them feel happy with their friends, which included some very exciting games of dodgeball, fantastic dance moves, LEGO building, board games and the chance to watch a movie or sit, chill out and chat with friends and teachers. The theme this year is Movement: move more for your mental health. We are so lucky here at Beechwood Park with the wide range of activities available that enable the children to do this, as well asbeingabletospendtimeoutsidein ourbeautifulgrounds.

boundaries with their digital devices. Year 6 have been using resources from Internet Matters during their PSHE lessons this term. There are some useful articles here for parents about this important topic. Top Form have had some insightful discussions all about their online presence; Fake News, Algorithms, Echo Chambers and Media Bias have all been alluded to as part of this scheme of work fromtheBBC.

There has been growing evidence that the use of smart phones in younger children can lead to lonelinessandmentalhealthissuesin teenyearsandlaterinlife.

As you know, Beechwood Park is proudly a phone free school and it is encouragingtoseethatHeadteachers in St Albans are pushing for schools across the city to be Smart Phone freeforallchildrenunder14.

understand how to create healthy habits with technology. Serena in Year 6 chose to write her “I have a dream” speech for our first Beechwood Speak Out competition, all about the issue of healthy phone use and the importance of boundaries. Her words are powerful andcanbefoundonthenextpage.

We are keen to support families further with this and we look forward to sharing more with you in due course. The UK safer internet centre has a wide range of resources available to parents and carers about keeping your child safe online which canbefoundhere.

SERENA’S SPEECH

“I have a dream that every parent in this room and all over the country will have restricted screen time. I can already see that some people think that’s more of a nightmare, but lend me your ears and youmightjustchangeyourmind.

Children in the room - is this a story that soundsfamiliar?

You come downstairs for some family time, and when you walk into the lounge you see your mum, dad and older sibling all on their phones. Familiar? I thought so.Thishappenstometoo, anditmakes me feel disappointed, forgotten. It makes me wonder if to my family, phones are moreimportantthanfamilytime.

Well, adults in the room, you might then say to your child that it's to do with work. But just because it is to do with work, does that really make it any better? Let’s face it, you’ll never get to the bottom of your Inbox, and there’ll always be another WhatsApp about PE kit, but take a breath. Your children want to spend time together, and isn’t that more important to you? Studies have shown that putting your phone down and having some quality time with others decreases workstressandincreaseshappinessand mental health. If you look at your phone repeatedly, you are scientifically leading anunhappierlife, butwithsmallchanges, you could increase your mental health for life.

Most adults here did not grow up with phones, agreed? So you didn’t learn healthy phone habits from the start. But now you have children who are growing up with mobiles, you have the opportunity to be a role model and help them develop healthyhabitsforthefuture.Sowhenyou pick up your phone, next time, just think, what is this doing to my mental health? But also, how is my example impacting my child’s mental health? Your children are watching and learning, even when youdon’trealiseit.

So, it's all well and good knowing we should put our phones down, but how? Youadultshavegotlotsofworktodoand socialmediaisaddictive!Therearethings todowithworkthatareoutofourcontrol, but there are plenty of ways to manage the amount of time we spend on social media. Roughly 36% of our daily online activities are on social media. That is more than one third of your phone time! Some ways to manage time on your device are having rewards for a certain amount of non-device time spent, and creating time slots where you can't have your phone. For example, my family has a phone box, where before 7:00 am and after 7:00 pm they have to put their devicesaway.

So, is your phone more important than your children? Make some changes now before it’s too late. Your phone will be there for the foreseeable future but your childrenwillonlybeyoungonce.”

Move for your mental health
