BARS We have several comfortable bars where you can relax , unwind and enjoy yourself, meet up with your family or even old friends whatever the occasion.

Our Downstairs bar offers a range of traditional bar snacks available between 12 noon and 2.00pm and there is plenty of choice to accompany your food with either a glass of wine, an ice cold beer or a selection hot beverages including fresh ground coffee, earl grey tea, cappuccino and hot chocolate.

The south facing beer garden is a pleasant place to be between the months of May and September, whilst in the autumn and winter months our outside heated atrium is a cosy area to keep warm.

Wyre has lots of things to see and do for all ages and many family friendly attractions along the way. A visit to the seaside is a must, the coastline stretches for 10miles from Cleveleys through Rossall Point and the magnificent Rossall Tower with fantastic views across Morecambe Bay onto Fleetwood and across the Wyre Estuary to Knott End and Pilling. Make a sandcastle, try beachcombing, take a boat trip or play in the water fountains at Marine Hall, even take the kids to Marine Splash, have bite to eat and enjoy traditional fish and chips and ice cream too. There’s plenty of attractions to entertain the kids and adults too. Visit one of our open farms, at Old Holly farm you’ll see a working diary, visit Animal World at Farmer Parrs, meet the rare breeds at Cobble Hey and enjoy their play areas and cafes. For something a bit different try a walk around Wyresdale Hall Estate and visit the Applestore Café in Scorton or get lost at Maize Maze in Singleton or how about a tour to an 18th Century Grade II* Windmill and see the sails turn at Marsh Mill!

There’s plenty to do come rain or shine too, submerge yourself in nautical history at Fleetwood Museum or discover the Fylde Country Life Museum where rural crafts are brought to life or visit Lancaster Canal which is navigable for 41miles and winds its way through some of the most spectacular scenery in the North West, its lock free so perfect for novices aswell as the more experienced canal users.

Perhaps you’d like to do a spot of shopping – submerge yourself in the historic Fleetwood Market with 200 stalls to visit. Discover Affinity Fleetwood by the marina for all your high street brands at low prices and some great events too, or take in the sights and sounds of Victoria Road shopping in Cleveleys, a great traditional seaside shopping experience. Garstang

Set on the banks of the River Wyre, with the Forest of Bowland on the doorstep, Garstang is steeped in history with beautiful architecture, abundant wildlife and an array of activities, whether you want an active holiday, a relaxing weekend or an enjoyable day trip.

Since 2000, Garstang has become known as the World’s First Fairtrade Town and in 2008 Garstang was voted the BEST town in Europe - winning a gold award in the prestigious Entente Florale competition.

Garstang is mentioned in the Domesday Book where it is referred to as Cherestanc. The medieval weinds bring a distinctive character to the High Street and the Market Cross and Greenhalgh Castle act as focal points to the town’s historic past.

Garstang also has an excellent record in Britain in Bloom, recognised as a regular Gold winning town by the Royal Horticultural Society. Since scooping the top GOLD award in the prestigious Entente Florale competition in 2008, Garstang has continued to uphold the exceedingly high standards that were expected by the panel of European judges. Their criteria required excellence in many different categories including: flora and vegetation, local environment, tourism impact and community participation. It was an accolade that could be shared and celebrated by the whole community, who every year continue to work so hard to make Garstang a wonderful place to live, work and visit.

However – it didn’t just start in 2008, Garstang has been participating in Britain in Bloom since 1987. From 1990 to the present day Garstang has been bringing home the certificates, trophies and gold medals. Over the years, local awards from the Northwest-in-Bloom, and National awards from Britain-in-Bloom have made the cabinet positively bulge!

Winning a top “Gold” again in the 2010 Britain-in-Bloom competition has given the town another opportunity to take part in the 2011 National “Champion of Champions”. Greenhalgh Castle The castle was built in 1490 by Thomas Stanley - the Earl of Derbyshire, in order to defend his estates around Garstang. It was later besieged by Cromwell’s parliamentary army during 1646 who later ordered it to be dismantled. Today just one of the towers remains although many of the local farmhouses have incorporated the stones in their buildings. A ghost is said to haunt nearby Gubberford Bridge where a Soldier killed his estranged wife during the siege of Greenhalgh.

It is said that the castle, or more the land on which it stands, was a gift to Thomas Stanley from Henry Tudor for his services (Treachery) during the battle of Bosworth. The Stanley’s went to Bosworth with Richard III, some 4,000 men of the 12,000 total were under their command. Henry Tudor turned up with 5,000 men so was definiately out numbered. The battle turned in a flash as Henry, realizing that he was out numbered galloped toward the Stanley’s line with some 50 men hoping to get his support, Richard seized what he saw as a chance and attacked.

Unfortunately for Richard the Stanley’s who were watching this probably were not happy with such a large force some 1,000 men attacking Henry with only 50 men. So the Stanley’s joined the fight on the side of Henry Tudor with their 4,000 men. Richard had no chance, he was overwhelmed and cut down, and that was that. It was Thomas Stanley who placed the crown on Henry’s head proclaiming him to be King.

This castle and it’s owners stand tall in the history of this great nation. Its a great shame that Cromwell saw fit to destroy such an important building. Though not surprising considering it’s royalist history. © Dr Greg

beacon fell

History The high visibility of the fell made it an ideal location for a warning beacon. A beacon on the fell has been recorded as early as 1002. The fell formed part of a chain of beacons to warn of the approach of the Spanish Armada in 1588, and of French forces between 1795 and 1815. More recently, beacon chains have been lit in celebration of coronations and jubilees.

In 1909, Fulwood Urban District Council bought the fell, which until then had been farmland, as a water supply. Water from the fell was collected in the existing Barnsfold Reservoirs, 1 mile (2 km) to the South West, and from there piped to Fulwood via Horns Dam Reservoir in Goosnargh parish and a small covered reservoir in Haighton. Conifer woodland was planted on the fell to help manage drainage. From 1959, the fell was no longer required for water, and was left to fall into disrepair.

Lancashire County Council acquired the site in 1969 and opened it in October 1970, as one in the first tranche of country parks in the United Kingdom. A new road was built connecting the existing single-track roads on the fell to form a circular route around the fell, to be operated as a one-way system. Car parks were added, and on the site of a farmhouse a visitor centre was built.

Present day The park is popular with visitors. It has a network of well-maintained footpaths through largely coniferous woodland. The Bowland Visitor Centre provides information about the fell and the Forest of Bowland, and serves refreshments. Wildlife that may be observed on the fell includes rabbit, hare, roe deer, stoat, weasel, red fox, badger, hedgehog, mole, grey squirrel and the otter. 11 species of dragonflies and damselflies have been found around the fell’s tarn. Charges were introduced in the car parks nearest to the visitor centre in 2011, but parking on other parts of the fell is still free.

Sculptures The fell features a number of sculptures by local artist Thompson Dagnall, including Black Tiger and Kissing Seat (2006), Walking Snake (1998), Hanging Bat (1998), Spruced up Heron (1996) and Orme Sight (1996).

Lancaster artist Richard Shilling is artist in residence who creates short-lasting sculptures from surrounding materials.

Cheese Beacon Fell Traditional Lancashire cheese, named after the Fell, and currently manufactured in Longridge and Garstang, has Protected Designation of Origin status. Only cheeses made with milk from the Fylde or the Preston area, and conforming to the published method of production, may use this name.

Get back to nature with open moorland, beautiful skies and spectacular scenery in the Forest of Bowland.

It is the 11th largest of all the Areas of Outstanding Beauty in England and Wales, covering 312sq miles of rural Lancashire and North Yorkshire. Geologically it’s part of the main Pennine range, and its series of gritstone fells bisecting remarkable sweeps of heather-covered moorland are perfect for outdoor pursuits.

The forest is dotted with charming stone villages, some of which date as far back as pre-historic times.

People have been living in the parish of Barley for over 3,000 years, today, this pretty village is a perfect place to climb the imposing Pendle Hill. Upon which, when you reach the summit at approximately 577-metres you will be rewarded with breath-taking views of the Ribble Valley and Bowland.

From Hurst Green in the south to Wennington in the North, the Forest of Bowland is dotted with charming stone villages, some of which date as far back as pre-historic times. People have been living in the parish of Barley for around 3,000 years. Now this pretty village is the perfect place from which to climb imposing Pendle Hill. When you reach the 577-metre summit you’re rewarded with spectacular views of the Ribble Valley and Bowland. Other notable villages within the Forest of Bowland, Lancashire include Downham, which has barely been touched since the 16th century. You might recognise it from the blockbuster Whistle Down the Wind, or more recently from the BBC drama Born and Bred.

Another village that has remained delightfully traditional is Slaidburn on the banks of the River Hodder. Pop into its Heritage Centre to see the ornate 10th century Angel Stone carving and then visit the 15th century Church of St Andrew.

Scorton

Scorton is a small rural village situated in Lancashire, England, about 8 miles south of Lancaster and 13 miles north of Preston. Scorton is in the Forest of Bowland and is popular with day visitors, walkers and cyclists.

Scorton meaning ‘farmstead near a ditch or ravine’ is a village in the parish of Nether Wyresdale, along the road from Garstang. It was developed around the cotton mill and railway in the nineteenth century, although there are records of the village and catholic church in Scurton, or Scorton, tracing back to the 17C. Today the village is a popular destination for walkers and cyclists seeking refreshment at The Priory, together with visitors to The Barn, Daisy Clough Nurseries and Wyresdale Park. Nearby landmark Nicky Nook is a popular climb, and the fisheries at Wyreside Lake and Cleveley Mere are well worth a visit too.

Situated on the banks of the River Wyre it is particularly fortunate in its location, being only a short way from the A6 and yet on the edge of the Forest of Bowland which is a designated ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’.

The picturesque village lies to the west of the Bowland Forest beneath the shadow of Calder Fell, in an area much famed for its sparkling streams, fells and forest glades inhabited by wildlife.

Cycling - Scorton has long been a destination and rest stop for cyclists from all over the Northwest.

More recently national cycle route number 6 has been routed through Scorton and the village has hosted many visitors for the Tour of Lancashire.

Walking - Scorton is a popular spot for walkers and there are a number of routes that start in the village centre. The millennium way route to Garstang is always very busy as people wander up away from the road edge and overlook the river and fields. At the back of Scorton is the hill, Nicky Nook and standing at the top of it, you have the best view in Lancashire.

The 360-degree panorama includes Morecambe Bay, Blackpool Tower, Lake District fells and even the shadowy outline of the Isle of Man. Well worth the short climb!

Lancashire is home to England’s longest river whose estuary can be seen from its source, the River Wyre.

The River Wyre snakes through Lancashire on a path of drumlins and small hills, in an area shaped by glaciers from the Ice Age. The 45 kilometrelong river eventually empties into the Irish Sea at Fleetwood, a former major fishing port.

One of the River Wyre’s most popular species of fish is the salmon, which travels thousands of miles from the Atlantic Ocean to spawn in the river annually.

Other fish species include barbel, bream, chub, dace, eels, perch, roach, sea trout and trout.

The river’s water is a mix of fresh water and salt water, which creates a unique habitat for animals and plants that can withstand changes in the saltiness of the water, due to the river tides ebb and flow. It is this type of special environment that initiated the River Wyre being considered a Lancashire County Biological Heritage Site.

The River Wyre rises into two distinct tributaries in the Forest of Bowland: the Tarnbook Wyre and Marshaw Wyre. Other tributaries include the River Calder at Catterall and the River Brock at St Michael’s On Wyre. Just below the weir at St Michael’s On Wyre, the river becomes tidal.

The title of County Biological Heritage Site is given to the most important, non-statutory wildlife sites in Lancashire, many of which provide a refuge for rare and threatened plants and animals, according to Lancashire County Council.

The River Wyre ends its journey from its source in the Trough of Bowland in the sea at Fleetwood after flowing past the fields and pastures of North West Lancashire until it begins to widen after passing Shard Bridge, where a toll was charged up until 1993, its course nearly run.

The River Wyre and its banks are home to a plethora of wildlife and trees including some of the most rare and endangered species of fish.

Along the river’s banks you can find a variety of trees and shrubs including alder, ash, broom, hazel, oak and willow. Many birds make their home along the

Visit Fleetwood and you’ll feel like you’ve arrived at a true Victorian treasure. Its traditional charm will wash over you as you relax into the easy-paced way of life.

There’s no rush, so take the time to discover this sleepy seaside gem. Head to the waterfront where there’s plenty to see. A gaze out over the water will be a real treat as you see Morecambe Bay in the distance – if you can, try and make it for sunset... simply stunning.

Along the waterfront, you’ll discover the majestic Marine Hall set amongst its very own pretty sculptured gardens. This prominent, art-deco building has been entertaining visitors to the town for decades, so book your seats for one of the many shows and concerts held here throughout the year.

If you want to find out all about the town’s heritage then take some time to visit the two local museums. Fleetwood Museum is a real treasure trove of information, packed with maritime history and treacherous tales.

The Mount is a leafy, seven acre park built on a large sand dune. For fantastic sea views overlooking the promenade, stroll up to the stately Pavilion built in 1902, at the summit., which also houses a clock, the bells of which regularly chime out on the quarter hours.

Fleetwood Memorial Park is a Grade II listed park. It is unique in that the entire grounds were created in commemoration of the First World War, and it is one of only four listed war memorial parks and gardens in the country.

The park has recently undergone a comprehensive restoration thanks to £2.4m funding from the Heritage and Big Lottery Funds. Essential conservation work has been carried out including restoration of the war memorial, entrances, pond, pathways and pavilion; also creating a greater range of sports and play facilities including a multi-use games area, in addition to the traditional bowling greens and tennis courts; and there’s a programme of events and activities running alongside.

Fleetwood Festival of Transport is one of the oldest and biggest free family days out in the North West of England. The event regularly attracts well over two hundred different vehicles – from stream trucks and fire engines to vintage cars and bicycles, so whatever your favourite, Fleetwood Festival of Transport has got it!

The event is held in the town centre of Fleetwood.

Because the event is held on the streets, which are closed to normal traffic, the event area is entirely hardstanding.

The Museum is currently run in partnership with Lancashire Museums and Fleetwood Museum Trust; the latter group providing funding for development and local volunteers to ensure the Museum remains open.

With so many people from the local community involved, the Museum has a strong community focus, and is open to new ideas to involve more people from the locality.

Cleveleys

Visitors continue to enjoy this coastal retreat which is situated just four miles north of the bright lights of Blackpool, especially since the award-winning £20 million renovation of Cleveleys’ Seafront. The sweeping coastline and eye catching promenade remain an unspoilt attraction for all to enjoy. Recently receiving a Quality Coast Award, Cleveleys beach is the perfect place to spend a family day out. parks & open spaces Wyre Estuary Country Park is situated on the banks of the River Wyre and is an award winning Green Flag Country Park. Many of the facilities are accessible to disabled people including the use of the Tramper all terrain electric buggy. The network of paths lead visitors through a variety of estuary and riverside views, where you will find a wide range of habitats and wildlife, including excellent birdwatching opportunities. There are picnic sites and a special family area with the cafe offering refreshments and information. A wide range of events are held at the park all year round.

Enjoy the newly opened natural playground on Fleetwood seafront, situated directly on the promenade at the end of Beach Road on Laidleys Walk. You just can’t miss it! The playgound is adjacent to a designated Biological Heritage Site and a Natural England Site of Special Scientific Interest, Wyre Estuary.

Kepple Lane Park, Garstang now boasts play areas for toddlers and older children, two sensory gardens, football nets and basketball hoop, youth shelter, picnic tables, outdoor fitness kit (each piece of kit has a QR code that can be scanned with a smartphone to show videos of different exercises you can do) and a performance stage, and has received a coveted Green Flag Award.

Rossall Picnic Site Playground Today, the gates, shelters and Grade II listed fountain have been carefully restored to retain their original features along with new footpaths and planting allowing the park to become a gateway for people arriving by tram or on the Knott End Ferry.

For wildlife, walks and more, visit the Millennium Green, Garstang. Established in 2000, the Millennium Green by the River Wyre in Garstang is a pleasant open space for use by all, owned by a charity and managed by volunteers.

The land is secure and will never be developed.

The picnic area is free from dogs with barbecue friendly tables.

Cycling in WYRE If you’re looking to explore the beautiful borough of Wyre, there’s no better way than to do so on a bike.

Cycling freely, you can experience at first hand the stunning scenery the Wyre has to offer.

Wyre’s countryside provides many opportunities for walking, cycling and horseriding and seeing some of the many plants and animals the area supports.

With a minimal amount of traffic and greenery that stretches for miles, bicycle-friendly routes and a network of different groups, cycling in Wyre is safe, simple and an experience to savour.

Footpaths are for use on foot only, while on bridleways you can walk, cycle or ride a horse. They are often waymarked to prevent you losing your way and to avoid tresspass onto private land.

The public paths in Wyre fall into two geographical areas, the area known as the urban core west of the Wyre estuary and the area known as the rural area that lies east of the estuary.

Broadly speaking the path network is managed and maintained by Wyre Council in the urban core and

by Lancashire County Council in the rural area.

Wyre Wheels is a cycling programme offering participants the opportunity to ride adapted bicycles including trikes, side-by-sides, hand bikes, quad and wheelchair bikes.

Anyone is welcome to attend the sessions, whether you are disabled, have limited mobility, recovering from illness or injury, elderly or just want to get back on a bike. Everyone is encouraged to participate!

The Lancashire region of Wyre has a huge variety of walking opportunities, from coastal dunes to wild upland moors, riverside trails to quiet country villages.

Nine days of walks for everyone to explore Garstang and its beautiful countryside surroundings. Welcome to the 2019 Garstang Walking Festival, coordinated by the Friends of Garstang Walking Festival and supported by Wyre Council.

Wyre Council promotes a range of routes throughout the district which can be accessed via the guided walk schemes, or as self guided trails; some of which are accessible to tramper vehicle users.

We have put together nine days of walks for all ages and abilities so that you can experience the best of spring time in the countryside around Garstang, the Forest of Bowland and the Fylde Plain.

Information about walking in Wyre, plus details of a huge range of other activities available in Wyre, can also be found at the Visit Garstang Centre.

There are over 40 walks to choose from including a three day challenge, Nordic walking, one hour health walks, children’s activities, easy rambles, evening walks, dog friendly trails and everything in between.

Guided walks Wyre runs an extensive programmed of guided walks throughout the year. The walks are lead by trained and experienced volunteers with a wide knowledge of the area. This is a great way to experience the region without the stress of route finding and navigation. You will also pick up some interesting information about the history and wildlife of the area.

The Friends of Garstang Walking Festival is a group of dedicated volunteers who do a fantastic job of coordinating the event and lead many of the walks alongside Wyre’s countryside rangers. As well as the chance to get outdoors and enjoy some fantastic scenery, our walk leaders are experts in the natural environment and local history – you’ll be amazed by what you learn.

Self-guided walks Self guided trails are aimed at the more experienced walkers who are able to follow a route description and map unaided, and are familiar with the country code and walking safety principles.

All walks are graded from easy to hard so whatever your ability, there’s something to choose from.

Old Holly Farm is an all-weather family attraction designed to appeal to visitors of all ages. The Playbarn café gives adults the perfect place to enjoy great food, hot drinks and homemade cakes whilst watching the children play. The kid’s menu is great for hungry youngsters, the challenge will be getting them out of the Playbarn.

The Taste Lancashire accredited Courtyard Café provides an appetizing selection of meals and refreshments throughout the year, with its evolving menu and special boards reflecting the seasons and products sold in the shop.

25 Wherever possible the produce and ingredients used are sourced from local suppliers, and their own cows provide the milk used in all their drinks and cooking.

The inner courtyard, calf shed and animal paddocks are home to the animals. With donkeys, goats, pigs, sheep, rabbits, chicks and calves there is plenty for visitors to do, so come along and meet the animals in a safe environment. It is important to be responsible when visiting Farms, so visitors are encouraged to use the facilities and information provided to keep safe.

Thingamajigz is a fantastic children’s indoor play centre located in Poulton-Le-Fylde, near Blackpool boasting 6,400 square feet of terrific fun including slides, ball pits and tunnels; sports zone and pre-school play areas.

Children from all over the country have enjoyed this large soft play area since 2005. It is the perfect place for your children to burn off some energy in a clean, safe and exciting setting whilst you sit back and relax with a coffee. They have an independent soft play area just for babies, a toddler zone, a junior area with a giant four lane slide and a football zone. A great day out for the kids!

Family Fun

26 Poulton-le-Fylde is a pretty, historic market town where you can enjoy a weekly market with fresh produce and eclectic gifts on offer and a great mixture of independent and high street retailers all within a compact town centre. It’s a central spot for exploring beautiful countryside and the nearby Wyre coastline of Fleetwood and Cleveleys.

A visit to the distinctly beautiful Poulton-le-Fylde is a real must. A wander through the cobbled square unearths the heritage of this traditional market town, as you can still see the stocks, whipping post and ancient St. Chad’s Church (just come in the springtime for a fantastic show of crocuses in the churchyard).

The market place at the centre of Poulton is the width of two streets and is closed to motor traffic.

Lying south of St Chad’s Church and

surrounded by shops, the square contains the town’s war memorial as well as a market cross, stocks, whipping post and fish slabs, from which fish were sold on market days. Although many of the buildings surrounding the market place were rebuilt following a fire in the 18th century, a few of the earlier buildings remain.

Truly Scrumptious Tea Rooms is a MUST to visit. It is a small, friendly family run tea room.

Situated in the heart of Poulton-Le-Fylde, with great views of the beautiful St Chads Church.

Poulton Nightlife A bustling town in the day, you can pop into one of the many boutique stores and pick up a special treat, or sit in one of the small cafes for a spot of lunch and a natter with your friends. Poulton-le-Fylde however, really comes to life at night. The many bars and restaurants are popular with locals and visitors alike.

One of the most important Inns was the Golden Ball, which probably dates from the 18th century. It was also the meeting place of the local court and at the end of the 19th century the cattle market was moved behind the pub from the market place.

The Thatched House pub existed in 1793 and may have been built in the Middle Ages. It was rebuilt in 1910 in the Mock Tudor style and has been identified as one of the town’s “key landmarks”.

The weekly market is a bustling part of Great Eccleston village life. You can pick up fruit and veg all locally grown, fresh fish, flowers and household items, to name but a few. The market takes place every Wednesday from 9am to 4pm and a Farmers Market takes place alongside the main street market on the third Wednesday of the month, 9am-1pm. Farmers’ Markets are a unique shopping experience with a wide range of local produce available.

The Great Eccleston Show is a two-day event and is a showcase for every aspect of rural endeavour and the whole range of crafts and skills associated with the country. With cooking, handicraft, horticulture and local arts, this north west agricultural show is a big attraction to townspeople and country folk alike. We have classes for Shire horses, sheep, pigs and poultry, light horses, goats, tractor-pulling and a ‘companion’ dog show. Traditional rural crafts can be seen alongside the latest in agricultural technology.

Tractor pulling competitions take place on a 100-metre track, and involve the machines pulling a weight transfer sledge. A weight transfer sledge basically gets heavier to pull as it is pulled down the track. This is achieved by increasing the weight on the pan of the sledge by moving the weight box from the rear to the front of the sledge as the sledge is pulled forward. The winner of the competition is the machine that can pull the sledge the furthest.

Tractor pulling is called “The World’s Most Powerful Motor Sport” with some machines producing in excess of 9000 horsepower.

However, the sport has many varied classes ranging from the small, single engine 950kg Modifieds, through the stock machines to the multi-engine 4.5 tonne machines.

Knott End

Knott End-on-Sea is a village situated on the southern side of Morecambe Bay, across the Wyre estuary from Fleetwood. Although there is no through road (to get there one has to pass through neighbouring Preesall), the village is in fact the main commercial centre for the Over Wyre area.

It is not clear how Knott End got its name. One theory is that the “knotts” were two large mounds of stones which lay out in the river until they were destroyed in the construction of the entrance to the Wyre Dock. Others believe that the name may have been derived from the “knot”, a bird that frequents the sands of Morecambe Bay on which Knott End is situated. Another thought is that, when entering the estuary, the early Norse seafarers used knotted ropes as navigational tools - the knots marking distance with Knott End being at the end of the rope.

A famous visitor to the village, L.S. Lowry, painted various views of Knott End in his well known ‘Matchstalk Cats and Dogs’ style.

In the 1970s, the Chorley skyline was dominated by factory chimneys, but most have now been demolished. Central Lancashire is the place to go if you’re an antiques and crafts lover. Chorley’s wealth was built on it’s cotton industry so you may find some special pieces of clothing around Central Lancs.

The Wyre

The historic city of Lancaster is perhaps the best known place to visit in the north of the country. Railway lovers visiting the area have to pay a visit to the historic Carnforth railway station. The station features a heritage centre that is free to visitors (donations welcome) and is open every day 10am to 4pm.

So, you’ve arrived in lovely Lancashire and what a treat you have in store! With two cities, historic towns, a famous coast line, castles, canal-side walks and some of the most beautiful countryside to be found anywhere in the UK, you will find plenty to enjoy in this lovely county.

The city of Lancaster to the north is as quirky as it is cultured. One of the UK’s Heritage Cities, it has its own medieval castle, the beautiful 54-acre Williamson Park with its famous Ashton Memorial and tropical butterfly house, and a thriving music and arts scene. Explore, shop, eat and be entertained to your heart’s content, or take a leisurely boat trip on the Lancaster Canal.

That same canal meanders all the way to Preston, the county’s commercial centre and second city. Explore its recently modernised markets, visit the Harris Museum or take in an event at the Guildhall. Further east, you can visit Blackburn’s beautiful cathedral, or take a walk from Burnley to see its iconic Singing Ringing Tree, a stunning, three-metre tall, musical sculpture recognised as one of the top 10 pieces of ‘sound art’ in the world.

The ancient market town of Clitheroe, in the Ribble Valley, is full or character with its Norman castle (now a museum), independent shops and vibrant eateries. The Ribble Valley countryside has to be seen to be believed; it’s one of the favourite places of HM the Queen, who once said she would like to retire there!

You can enjoy lovely coastal walks, taking in pretty towns like Lytham St Annes, with its windmill, and Morecambe with its famous bay. When it comes to stopping for a bite to eat, you’ll find a wide and varied choice of places to eat and drink, in a county which is building itself quite a reputation for culinary excellence. Enjoy your stay!

A STROLL ALONG

ST ANNES PIER St Annes Land and Building Company decided to set about building a new pier and work was started in 1879. On 15th June 1885, the Honourable Fred Stanley performed the opening ceremony.

The Pier was a narrow, modest structure, uncovered without any imposing entrance and boasting only a single shelter at the far end.

In those days it was widely used for embarking pleasure cruises, the North Channel provided a negotiable stretch of water for vessels of comparatively large tonnage. Even at low tide Blackpool Steamers and privately owned yachts were moored within reach of the pier.

The Concert Pavilion situated on the other side became neglected and in April 1975, Yehudi Menuhin and his Chamber Orchestra were invited to play on the Pier and the Pavilion was refurbished and renovated for this occasion.

Her Royal Highness Princess Anne came and the Pavilion, never looking better, was fully attended. Within a few weeks of this happening there was a fire and the theatre was completely destroyed and the end of the Pier was lost, which was a great loss to the town.

The Pier is still owned by St Annes Land and Building Company, the largest part of the pier being used as an amusement arcade along with a small shop and cafe.

By 1904 the Pier had been widened and extended and on the 2nd April of that year the management announced that the new Concert Pavilion, Bank Kiosk and Pier Head would be open to the public.

In June 1910, the Floral Hall, a magnificent structure of glass was officially opened. St Annes Pier was famous for the Lionel Johns’ Pier Orchestra which mostly comprised of lady musicians who played every morning and evening throughout the season in the Floral Hall.
