What’s on at Blackpool Blackpool offers a wide range of attractions & entertainments for you to visit whilst you’re here, most are within less than a mile walking distance – with the exception of the Zoo, Stanley Park and the Model Village (these being around £7 in a taxi) We have listed some of the best attractions in the area in the Guest Information Folder in your room, to make it easier for you to plan your trip to Blackpool.

There are various leaflets in the Hallway, and also we have discount vouchers for 30% off Merlin attractions. We can also book tickets for VIVA for you – again all the shows are listed in the Guest Information folder and we can usually get a 15% discount of those.

Blackpool Transport operate a network of high frequency buses and trams across the Fylde Coast with 140 buses, 18 modern light rail trams and a fleet of Heritage trams.

Currently operating 14 bus routes, linking Fleetwood, Cleveleys, Thornton, Bispham, Poulton, Blackpool, St Annes and Lytham. Our tramway extends 11 miles along the coast from Starr Gate to Fleetwood.

Blackpool Illuminations are one of the most iconic sights in the world and have been the UKs greatest visitor attraction for more than 100 years. This world-famous free light show stretches along the promenade from Starr Gate at the south end of the town to Bispham in the north.

Most visitors drive through the Illuminations by car, coach or bus. There are also open top trams which run along the tramway as well as horse-drawn landau. At Bispham there is a special walkway for the tableaux which also includes mixed media in the various large tableaux displays. The Illuminations cost £1.9M each year to stage.

Each year new features are added and 2018 was no exception, welcoming new arrivals, including the return of their 3D projection show on the front of the historic Blackpool Tower.

The Switch-on Festival is the biggest night in Blackpool’s event calendar. With up to 20,000 people watching their favourite pop stars perform on stage at the Tower Festival Headland, before a celebrity guest switches on the Illuminations for another season.

Illuminasia Blackpool If you’re searching for things to do in Blackpool that are fun and inspirational for kids and adults alike, then look no further than this wonderful display of indoor illuminations. The Blackpool Tower

Blackpool Opera House Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Peter Kay, just some of the stars which have graced the stage of the Opera House, reads like a who’s who of popular culture for the past century.

Now in its third reincarnation, the modern-day Opera House opened in 1939, designed by Charles MacKeith and was built to reflect a cinematic experience for its almost 3,000-strong audience who can experience a diverse entertainment mix on its stage – one of the biggest and widest in Europe.

Described as a “masterpiece of theatre design”, the Opera House still retains a lot of its original features which have also been given the royal seal of approval by the Queen who oversaw two Royal Variety Performances here in 1955 and 2009.

Mirror Ball The famous addition to the Blackpool South Shore seafront is the Mirror Ball, installed in 2001. The Blackpool Council appointed sculptor Michael Trainor to design the ball for them and an engineering firm in Oldham were given the task of building it.

The outside of the mirror ball is covered with 46,000 individual mirrors and was refurbished in 2010. For the superstitious amongst you, the amount of bad luck if it was dropped is tremenduous!

At night, the ball is lit up in it’s own spectacular light show, this is not one to be missed. A mini illuminations right on the prom, where you’ll have a front row seat to enjoy the sea air on a summers evening or wrap up warm to sit and relax, watching the lights shine across from all angles of the promenade.

stanley park Stanley Park is a masterpiece of landscape design and historical splendour. Known as one of the regions finest parks and voted Blackpool’s most favourite location, the three hundred and ninety acre park is a landmark in its own right, offering a magical blend of architecture, horticulture and recreation. The naturalised backdrop of woodlands and lakes embraces visitors and transports them to an environment rich in tranquility. The park abounds in wildlife and its features appeal to the naturalist, the plant lover or one who would do nothing more than relax in elegant surroundings.

History of Stanley Park Blackpool Mayor and MP Sir Albert Lindsey Parkinson acquired the land for parkland in the 1920’s. The Council subsequently commissioned its design to renowned architects T.H. Mawson and Sons. The park was officially opened in 1926 by the 17th Earl of Derby and Sir George Edward Villiers Stanley, in whose honour it was named. The park received Grade II status on the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens in 1995 as well as being nominated for a National Green Flag Award. Stanley Park benefited from a five million pound Heritage Lottery Fund restoration in 2007.

Gardens and Landmarks Delightful horticultural displays can be found throughout the park. Do not miss the Italian Gardens, water fountains, statues, Rose Gardens and Remembrance Garden. Admire the impressive Cocker Tower, a memorial to Blackpool’s first Mayor Dr William Cocker, bandstand and ornamental bridges over the lake.

Dining Boasting one of England’s finest examples of Art Deco design and attracting interest from period enthusiasts, the Art Deco Café is a unique, historic restaurant offering spectacular indoor and alfresco views of the park.

Sample light breakfasts and snacks, hearty lunches, formal dining and inclusive party nights. Alternatively, grab an ice cream or a drink from one of the kiosks dotted around the park.

Family Fun Enjoy the park in a more genteel fashion by hiring a boat to explore the parks expansive lake. For those who like a less energetic experience, travel on the children’s shuttle train or have a picnic! Participate in one of our many events including guided walks, children’s activities, shows and not to forget Sundays at the Band Stand with its musical extravaganzas.

You can’t miss Bispham. Heading north along the promenade from the centre of Blackpool, the tram stop has ‘Bispham’ written on it in big letters! The last local centre north of Blackpool seafront, Bispham is a handy spot for all kinds of local shops.

Past North Pier, Gynn Square and Uncle Tom’s Cabin, the tram tracks carry on to Cleveleys and beyond. The Bispham tram stop marks the end of Blackpool’s illuminations and tableaus.

At the tram stop, the T Junction heading inland is Red Bank Road along which you’ll find all kinds of local shops. Against the promenade you’ll find amusements, fish and chips and the feeling of a seaside resort, and just past the junction the type of shops that you’d get on any local high street.

There’s also a majority of small independent retailers at the top of Red Bank Road, with a florists, convenience store, wedding dress shop, beauty parlours, value stores, restaurants, and a pet shop. It’s a wide pavement and there’s free on street parking both on the main road and nearby side streets.

A little further down the road is the Sainsbury’s supermarket with a large car park and entrances off the main road and rear of the store. Around Sainsbury’s the independent shops continue, with a pharmacy, carpet shops, opticians, a tile shop, hairdressers, quality menswear, bike shop and more besides.

It’s not far from here you’ll find the Sunam Indian restaurant. If you fancy some traditional Indian cuisine, this is the place for you. One of the best, and most popular, Indian restaurants in Blackpool, serving up an array of delicious dishes for you to choose from. Take advantage of their Delhi Dinner with 15% discount if you collect!

Heading inland, past the fire station, the shops give way to houses and the roundabout junction with Devonshire Road - at this point you’re at Bispham Village.

Bispham Village is an excellent spot for local people, with a mixture of high street names and yet more independent stores all in very close walking distance of each other, with plenty of free parking thrown in.

There’s a Tesco Express, post office, opticians, Bispham Market, a Co-op supermarket and separate pharmacy, banks and a bakery.

In the 1970s, the Chorley skyline was dominated by factory chimneys, but most have now been demolished. Central Lancashire is the place to go if you’re an antiques and crafts lover. Chorley’s wealth was built on it’s cotton industry so you may find some special pieces of clothing around Central Lancs.

Bygone Times is located at Eccleston and offers visitors a unique shopping experience. Featuring more than 500 stall holders, here you’ll find a wide range of goods on offer, from antiques and collectables to vintage clothing and furniture. A must visit if you love uncovering treasures from the past.

A visit to the seaside is a must, the coastline stretches for 10miles from Cleveleys through Rossall Point and the magnificent Rossall Tower with fantastic views across Morecambe Bay onto Fleetwood and across the Wyre Estuary to Knott End and Pilling.

There’s plenty of attractions to entertain the kids and adults too. Visit one of our open farms, visit Animal World at Farmer Parrs, meet the rare breeds at Cobble Hey & Gardens and enjoy their play areas and cafes.

For something a bit different try a walk around Wyresdale Hall Estate and visit the Applestore Café in Scorton or get lost at Maize Maze in Singleton or how about a tour to an 18th Century Grade II* Windmill and see the sails turn!

The Wyre

The historic city of Lancaster is perhaps the best known place to visit in the north of the country. Railway lovers visiting the area have to pay a visit to the historic Carnforth railway station. The station features a heritage centre that is free to visitors (donations welcome) and is open every day 10am to 4pm.

A STROLL ALONG

ST ANNES PIER St Annes Land and Building Company decided to set about building a new pier and work was started in 1879. On 15th June 1885, the Honourable Fred Stanley performed the opening ceremony.

The Pier was a narrow, modest structure, uncovered without any imposing entrance and boasting only a single shelter at the far end.

In those days it was widely used for embarking pleasure cruises, the North Channel provided a negotiable stretch of water for vessels of comparatively large tonnage. Even at low tide Blackpool Steamers and privately owned yachts were moored within reach of the pier.

The Concert Pavilion situated on the other side became neglected and in April 1975, Yehudi Menuhin and his Chamber Orchestra were invited to play on the Pier and the Pavilion was refurbished and renovated for this occasion.

Her Royal Highness Princess Anne came and the Pavilion, never looking better, was fully attended. Within a few weeks of this happening there was a fire and the theatre was completely destroyed and the end of the Pier was lost, which was a great loss to the town.

The Pier is still owned by St Annes Land and Building Company, the largest part of the pier being used as an amusement arcade along with a small shop and cafe.

By 1904 the Pier had been widened and extended and on the 2nd April of that year the management announced that the new Concert Pavilion, Bank Kiosk and Pier Head would be open to the public.

In June 1910, the Floral Hall, a magnificent structure of glass was officially opened. St Annes Pier was famous for the Lionel Johnsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Pier Orchestra which mostly comprised of lady musicians who played every morning and evening throughout the season in the Floral Hall.
