If you decide to take any to your room, we kindly ask you return when you are finished for other guests to enjoy.

Our superfast fibre optic WIFI is available to all guests and is available throughout the house. There are 2 available networks – CompstonGuest & CompstonGuest1 – the password is Compston2018 (case sensitive) and is the same for both networks.

Just use the strongest signal available to you.

Please feel free to ask at Reception for any amenities such as fresh milk, shavers, toothbrush/toothpaste, iron/ironing board, chargers etc. We have umbrellas available for your use in the stand near the entrance for those rainy days and a mat for your muddy boots.

You can also hang any wet jackets to dry above the radiator.

You are invited to the dining room for breakfast between 8am and 9am. You will find a Menu overleaf for you to browse.

Please take your room key with you when leaving the house as the keys for the main front doors are also attached. Reception is unattended for parts of the day and evening after 7pm and we don’t want you getting locked out! For your safety and the safety of others, please do not let anyone else into the house.

We offer free access to White Platts recreation green found opposite our House. They boast a range of activities such as crazy golf, pitch & putt and tennis.

In order for all guests to be able take advantage of this facility, we ask that all usage be kept to 1 hour and the cards returned ready for the next guest.

If demand is low however, longer periods may be available.

Please note that smoking of any kind (including electronic cigarettes) is strictly prohibited at Compston House. Please see our Smoking policy for more information.

Take away food is also prohibited anywhere in the house. Thank you for your cooperation.

Our Guest Lounge is available strictly for Guest use only (friends, family, colleagues etc are not permitted) and is closed at 10pm. We have a collection of board games and a small selection of books for you to enjoy.

Check out time is 10am. Late check out may be arranged (subject to availability) at a rate of £10 per hour. If you require an early check out, please let us know the day before departure. Please ensure all keys and parking permits are returned when you check out, so they are available for future guests.

We are pleased to serve award winning (silver award) local Cumberland sausage and cured bacon from Haytons Butchers in Staveley and local free range eggs from Bannerigg Farm in Windermere.

We offer freshly ground coffee and Lakeland Special Tea's from Farrers in Kendal. John makes our pancakes fresh daily using an authentic American recipe. handed to us. Combined with Aunt Jemima's Maple Syrup, don't be surprised if you find yourself asking for an extra one, or three!

If your here on Sunday's, Meg’s freshly baked blueberry muffins, which are served at breakfast are very well received. Be sure to try them.

The picturesque towns and villages are rich in history and culture, all in beautiful settings with their distinct characters. You can shop till you drop, eat, drink and be merry, or simply relax and get away from it all.

The Lake District is famous for its lakes and fells, but there’s so much more to discover. It’s brimming with life, attracting people from all over the world. There is always so much to explore at any time of the year, with a wealth of cultural venues and family attractions including art galleries, museums, theatres and exhibitions.

There are beautiful parks and gardens, all set within the wonderful natural landscape.

We have a great reputation for the quality and uniqueness of our restaurants and food and drink scene, with popular brands consumed across the globe and local delicacies loved by Hollywood stars. Kendal Mint Cake, Grasmere Gingerbread, Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding, Cumberland sausage, Hawkshead Relish and Farrer’s tea and coffee are just a few of our own local stars – and they’re right here to enjoy!

If adventure sports are your thing, you’ll love trying outdoor swimming, mountain biking and rock climbing.

But not everything here is about gorgeous scenery or adrenalin-fuelled activities; there’s nothing more relaxing than checking out one of the many character-filled markets in our ancient market towns. The area is renowned for local produce and you can buy delicious foodstuffs from farmers’ markets, shops and delicatessens.

18-holes of championship golf at one of Tulsa’s most popular and player friendly golf courses will have you coming back for more throughout the seasons.

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned veteran, their course has something for everyone. Large bent grass greens, Bermuda fairways, and seven lakes highlight the character of this “Jenks Jewel.”

Silecroft Golf Course Occupies a strip of coastal land adjacent to the Irish Sea on the outskirts of the village of Silecroft in the Western Lake District. Vast sandy beaches and the looming presence of Black Combe dominate the landscape and provide this quiet corner of Lakeland with the unique qualities that are so well loved by locals and visitors alike.

Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club Situated in the picturesque Lune Valley in the Lake District, Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club offers golfers a course that measures 6,350 yards in total and covers over 160 acres of stunning countryside. The plush fairways, trickling streams, dramatic views and challenging holes mean that golfers of all abilities will enjoy a fabulous and testing day at this stunning course.

Kendal Located eight miles southeast of Windermere and 19 miles north of Lancaster, the market town of Kendal is a picturesque and lively market town that has a history stretching back thousands of years. With a population of 29,000, it’s the third largest settlement in Cumbria behind Carlisle and Barrow-in-Furness and is today known mainly as a centre for tourism as well as being the home of the world renowned Kendal Mint Cake as well as a producer of pipe tobacco and tobacco snuff. It’s also a great base for those who love to walk in the countryside. Known as the gateway to the Lake District, as well as the Cumbrian fells being on its doorstep, Kendal is also just 30 minutes drive from the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Although many people think that the Romans were the areas first settlers, it was actually the Brigantes who were in the area first, the tribe becoming important trading partners with the Romans when they arrived in the first century AD. Originally named Cherchbi in the Domesday book, for many centuries later it was known as Kirkbie Kendal, meaning the “village with a church in the valley of the River Kent”. The town is the site of several ruined castles, the best perhaps being Kendal Castle, built in the 12th century as the chief seat of the Barony of Kendal. The town retains its strong sense of history, with the centre of the town structured around its original high street with many historic buildings. A walk around the bustling centre today will reveal a whole host of historic treasures from long history of this fantastic Lakeland town.

Kendal is often seen as the Southern gateway to the Lake District, being only around 9 miles from Windermere and around 30 miles from Keswick. The other lakes are all within an hour or two’s travelling by car from the town, as are locations for walks and rambles, both gentle and demanding.

Kendal has, at various times in the past, been an important centre for trade and commerce. The town’s traditional trade was in wool, from which the town’s motto “Pannus mihi panis”, literally meaning “wool is my bread” was taken.

There is also a strong link with the footwear industry, Kendal being home to the famous K-Shoes brand up until the factories ceased to operate around 2003. The warehouse on the edge of town now houses one of Kendal’s excellent shopping arcades.

The layout of the town is characterised by the narrow yards and lanes branching from the main street. It is less than a mile from the National Park boundary but is overlooked by the majority of people heading for Windermere and Bowness.

to do The Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry, formerly the Museum of Lakeland Life, is a local museum in Kendal, Cumbria, northwest England. The museum was opened in 1971 by Princess Alexandra. It won the first ever UK Museum of the Year award in 1973.

It was founded in 1796 and includes collections of local archaeology, history, and geology, and a natural history collection from around the globe. Kendal Castle is a medieval fortification to the east of the town. The castle, which is atop a glacial drumlin, was built in the 12th century as the Caput baroniae for the Barony of Kendal.

The Brewery Arts Centre is the best known venue in the town thanks to its incredible programme of live music, theatre and comedy. It’s also a cinema too. Bootleggers is the town’s most famous late night venues and one that has live music every Thursday, Friday and Sunday interspersed with ticketed gigs throughout the year. Kendal’s hidden gem is Ruskins however, where you can experience a diverse range of entertainment from acoustic jam nights to reggae, folk nights and electronica – with the odd quiz night inbetween.

For classical music lovers, Kendal Leisure Centre holds a range of classical music events throughout the year in its impressive concert hall. This seats up to 900 people and is home to Westmorland Sinfonia and Westmorland Orchestra.

Things to do for kids Kids are well catered for in Kendal. As well as having all of the fabulous countryside that surrounds the town to explore, there are lots of other options too. Lakeland Climbing Centre is suitable for all ages and has a range of indoor climbing walls, beginners courses and taster sessions. For those children who love arts and crafts, Pandemonium Pots is really popular. Perfect for a rainy day (or any day actually), children select a piece of pottery from a wide range of designs and are free to decorate it as they wish. This is then glazed before it’s taken home. Staveley Staveley is a pretty Lake District village, surrounded by rolling countryside interspersed with valleys, woods and drystone walls. The bustling village nestles at the foot of the secluded Kentmere Valley. Its history is shaped by two rivers: the fast-flowing river Kent and the smaller river Gowan. This abundant supply of water once powered 8 mills.

Today, Staveley Mill Yard, the former bobbin/ wood mill, is home to over 20 small enterprises and workshops including the UK’s largest cycle store, a unique cookery school, Hawkshead Brewery, an icecream parlour, artisan bread maker and the famous walkers’ café, Wilfs.

Staveley is a handy centre for walkers, with easy access to the fells, particularly the Kentmere Horseshoe.

Craggy Wood, Longsleddle Woods, and Spring Hag are all within easy walking distance, while a 15 minute steep walk up Reston Scar provides spectacular views over the South Lakes. Nearby Dorothy Farrer’s Spring Wood is a nature reserve. In the past, the wood produced timber for bobbins, charcoal and basket making. Today, the wood is still coppiced, but managed for wildlife conservation instead.

While there is no longer any bobbin production in Staveley, there is a carpentry business in the village.

Peter Hall & Son’s furniture workshop and showroom specialises in high-quality, bespoke furniture, using traditional skills and locally sourced wood. Visitors are able to see all stages of the furniture-making process, all performed by skilled craftsmen.

In August of every year, residents put on an art exhibition for regional artists at the distinctive Roundhouse Theatre.Staveley Carnival takes place every two years and consists of a weekend of colourful celebrations where you can experience everything from music and dance through to community arts music and a carnival atmosphere. Everyone is welcome to visit and get involved.

Bowness & Windermere

The linked towns of Bowness-on-Windermere and Windermere are just over one mile apart, both close to the shores of the beautiful Lake Windermere and at the the very heart of the Lake District. Bowness (as it is most often called) lies actually on the banks of the lake, whereas Windermere lies just half a mile from their lake.

Thanks to the popularity of the lake and the popularity of both towns, their mutual growth has led them to become one large settlement although they are distinct towns with two distinguishable town centres.

Bowness is the older of the two towns, with the ancient parish church of St Martin being built in 1483, although it’s thought that this was on an older foundation. During the 19th century, Bowness grew from a small fishing village to a town living almost entirely off tourism and holiday homes, as it does today. Windermere as a town only came into existence in the 19th century, it earlier being called Birthwaite prior to the arrival of the Kendal and Windermere Railway, when the town took the name it is known by today. Windermere is today still the area’s main railway station and offers train and bus connections to the surrounding areas as well as Manchester, Manchester Airport and the West Coast Main Line.

Shopping in Bowness and Windermere If you’re looking for bustling shopping centres packed with high street names, then Bowness and Windermere are not for you. However, if you love small, unique and individual shops, then you’re in for a treat. From artisan food makers to gifts, antiques and collectables, the two towns are a delight to explore. As you may expect being close to the lake and the Cumbrian fells, shops selling outdoor supplies and water sport equipment are well represented in both towns. For those looking for a more traditional shopping experience with high street brands, the town of Kendal to the south of both towns has a bustling high street and several shopping centres.

The Village Inn is a particular highlight in Bowness and it’s not surprising that it has been the recipient of numerous awards. Entertainment lovers certainly aren’t shortchanged in both Bowness and Windermere, despite their small size. Bowness is home to the Old Laundry Theatre, a 250 seat ‘theatre in the round’ establishment. Every season, since the Theatre opened in 1992, the theatre has hosted Sir Alan Ayckbourn’s latest play on its world premier tour straight from Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre. It has also hosted a plethora of famous names from Alan Carr and Jenny Eclair to Victoria Wood and Sue Perkins.

Bowness is also host to the Royalty Cinema. This is a three screen cinema that offers the latest releases as well a diverse range of less commercial films.

Two of the screens are set up for the modernday cinema experience whereas Screen 1 is in the original auditorium with its 1930s ambience and 400 seats in stalls and circle.

Thanks to both Bowness and Windermere’s central location in the Lake District National Park, all of the area’s fells and other lakes are within easy reach.

Both towns make the perfect base for walkers or cyclists who wish to explore the wider Lake District and are well catered for in both towns. It’s the lake however that is the big draw for many people who visit these two towns and as well as simply enjoying the ambience and views of the lake, there are a wide range of activities and watersports that people can get involved in.

Have the perfect day out with a Windermere Lake Cruise. No matter where you start your journey, be it Ambleside, Bowness, Brockhole or Lakeside Pier, you’ll be treated to stunning views of mountain scenery, secluded bays and the many wooded islands.

Things to do with the kids Children are well catered for in the Bowness and Windermere areas. As well as the countless activities down by the lakeside, there are other options too. Older children may enjoy Crags Adventures, that offer kids the chance to take part in ghyll scrambling/canyoning, abseiling and rock climbing. Treetop Nets in nearby Ambleside is well worth a visit too for children over 4. Let your kids enjoy this unique experience that will leave them feeling like they’re playing in the clouds! The nets are suspended up to nine metres off the ground and in the tree canopy of giant oak trees. The nets are completely safe, and they’ll have stunning views of the surrounding countryside when you’re on them.

Bowness is also host to the World of Beatrix Potter.

A vibrant family attraction, it brings to life all 23 enchanting stories in a magical recreation of the beautiful Lake District countryside. The exhibition features favourite characters from the famous books including Peter Rabbit and Mrs Tiggy-winkle.

27 Ambleside is a bustling little town in the Lake District National Park that is situated at the head of Windermere, the largest natural lake in England.

Thanks to its location, Ambleside is the perfect base for visitors to the Lake District, whether hiking, mountaineering, mountain biking or simply enjoying the wonderful views the Lake District has to offer.

The town has a permanent population of 4000 but this increases greatly, especially in the summer as thousands of tourists descend on the town and stay in the town’s hotels and B&Bs. There has been a settlement in the Ambleside area since Roman times, there being a Roman fort just to the south of the town called Galva, dating from 79 AD. It was in 1650 however that the modern town we now know as Ambleside was born, the town being given a charter to hold a market. The town’s Market Place became the commercial centre for agriculture and the wool trade.

The town also has a special place in history with the poet William Wordsworth working in the town as Distributor of Stamps for Westmorland. His fellow poet Shelley rebuked him for taking up such a position but it gave Wordsworth the financial security to pursue his poetry and he eventually became the Poet Laureate in 1842. Many well known characters have been connected with Ambleside, including William Wordsworth, Hardwicke Rawnsley, John Ruskin and Beatrix Potter. More about these people can be found in the The Armitt Museum, (opposite the main car park entrance).

Ambleside has a good number of shops selling a diverse range of goods. However, thanks to its central location in the Lake District and proximity to Lake Windermere, as you may suspect, there’s a large number of outdoor shops selling walking, camping and other outdoor goods. Although you will see the odd familiar shop in Ambleside, this proliferation of outdoor shops is a bonus, especially as most visitors to the Lake District will want to get out and engage with the countryside at some point.

Outdoor gear is available at a range of price points and thanks to the competition between retailers, there are some excellent bargains to be had.

It’s not all outdoor shops though and there are lots of other independent shops to enjoy in the town from antique and collectables stores and bookshops.

Ambleside also has a popular outdoor street market that is held every Wednesday. Here you will find a diverse range of goods on offer as well as locally produced food.

For a small town of just 4000 people, there is an amazing range of places to eat and drink, far more than most other towns of a similar size. As you would suspect being in the heart of the Lake District, there are lots of traditional pubs offering real ales and a real friendly Cumbrian welcome. There’s also a growing number of bars nowadays too offering a wide range of wines, gins and whiskies to suit all tastes.

Ambleside abounds with cafes and restaurants too, so whether you love traditional Cumbrian fayre, chic and sophisticated dishes or like to explore food from around the world, there’s something for you in Ambleside.

29 For a small town, there is a surprising amount of things to do for children. As well as all the opportunities for outdoor activities the surrounding countryside gives, there’s plenty to do within the town itself. For those wanting to explore the town, The Ambleside Mystery Treasure Trail can be downloaded online where kids will need all of their mystery busting skills to get around the Rambler’s Riddle. The trail is approximately 2.2 miles long and should take over 2 hours to complete. Treetop Nets in the town is well worth a visit too for children over 4. Let your kids enjoy this unique experience that will leave them feeling like they’re playing in the clouds! Ambleside for more confident walkers. If you prefer to stay closer to the town itself, there’s a fantastic short walk from the heart of Ambleside to Stock Ghyll Force. It takes about 25 minutes to walk to this spectacular waterfall that is 70 ft in height and can be safely viewed from a railed viewpoint.

Thanks to Ambleside’s central location in the Lake District National Park, all of the the area’s lakes and fells are within easy reach. To the south of the town is Lake Windermere. As well as being the perfect place to walk, it’s also a great place to enjoy a wide range of watersports. The countryside around here is stunning and it’s within walking distance of

Grasmere

Nestling at the foot of some spectacular fells and with its own lake, Grasmere is probably Cumbria’s most popular village, thanks in part to William Wordsworth (1770-1850).

William and his sister Dorothy moved into Dove Cottage, in 1799 and they stayed here until 1808 as the cottage had become inadequate. They moved to Allan Bank, a large house that William had condemned as an eyesore when it was being built. They lived here for two years, with poet and friend Coleridge. They then moved to the Old Rectory, opposite St Oswald’s Church, a cold and damp house where his two youngest children died. In 1813 they moved to Rydal Mount.

Today Grasmere is totally given over to the tourist industry, with plenty of gift shops, and places to eat and stay. Most of the buildings date from the 19th or early 20th Century, though the farms around Grasmere are much older.

The Church dates from the 13th Century. Recently the neglected bit of land between the church and the river has been renovated and turned into a place of peace called the Wordsworth Daffodil Garden. Here you can own a share, and have an engraved stone set in the path.

At one of the entrances to the churchyard is this small building, which was the village school for over 220 years, from its opening in 1630 A.D. William Wordsworth, his wife and his sister all taught here in the early 19th Century. It is now home to the famous Sarah Nelson’s Gingerbread Shop.

Just across the road from the Church is Church Stile, a row of 17th Century cottages, which is owned by the National Trust. The earliest authenticated occupant was a Richard Harrison, who died in 1662. By the 18th Century it had become Robert Newton’s Inn, and William Wordsworth, his brother John, and Coleridge stayed here for several days during their Lake District tour in 1797.

It is only a short walk to the Lake, which can be superb, especially early morning in the summer, with the mist rising. Rowing boats are available for hire, 7 days per week between March and early November. There is a little island in the middle of the Lake, where William and Dorothy used to picnic.

The island is now privately owned, and visitors should not land there tempting though it is. There is a walk around the lake, though part of it is on the main A591 road which runs along the east side.

Every year on the Saturday nearest St Oswald’s Day (5 Aug), Grasmere celebrates its Rushbearing Festival. This custom dates back to the days when the earthen floor of the church was strewn with rushes for warmth and cleanliness.

Each year from the end of July to the beginning of September at Grasmere Village Hall is the Lake Artists Society Summer Exhibition, where some 300 exhibits by local artists and sculptors are on display. There is also an exhibition at Easter.

William Wordsworth

The words of the great poet William Wordsworth have become synonymous with the Lake District. His poem of ‘Daffodils’ beginning “I wander’d lonely as a cloud” is the quintessential Lake District poem. Born in Cockermouth, just north of the National Park, he went to school in Hawkshead.

After attending Cambridge University and then living in Dorset, Wordsworth moved to Dove Cottage in Grasmere in 1799. It was in this little cottage, at times ‘crammed edge full’ with people, in the heart of the remote Lake District, that William Wordsworth wrote some of the greatest poetry in the English language and his sister, Dorothy, kept her famous ‘Grasmere Journal’, now on display in the Museum.

William came across his first Grasmere home by chance as he and his brother John walked along this lane with his fellow poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge in late 1799. He and Dorothy moved in just a few weeks later.

The cottage had once been an inn, the ‘Dove and Olive Bough’. It was now to be the Wordsworths’ home for the next eight years. In 1802 William married Mary Hutchinson and three of their five children were born here.

Quotes: On the Lake District: “A sort of national property in which every man has a right and interest who has an eye to perceive and a heart to enjoy” On the mountains: “in the combinations which they make, towering above each other, or lifting themselves in ridges like the waves of a tumultuous sea, and in the beauty and variety of their surfaces and colours, they are surpassed by none” Arguing that extending the railway into the Lake District would bring so many people that they would destroy the beauty they had come to see: “Let then the beauty be undisfigured and the retirement unviolated” On the building of the Georgian roundhouse on Belle Isle, Windermere: “A pepper-pot”

dove cottage Step into Dove Cottage to get a sense of that time: stone floors, dark panelled rooms, glowing coal fires and the family’s own belongings, little has changed in the house since the Wordsworths lived here. Stroll in the Dove Cottage garden, a place of refuge, meditation and inspiration. It was, wrote Wordsworth, ‘the work of our own hands’. Here they planted flowers and vegetables, watched birds and butterflies and, most importantly, read, talked and wrote poetry.

Things to do in Coniston Some of the most popular things to do in Coniston are walking on Coniston Old Man and the fells surrounding peaceful Coniston Water. Coniston is a remarkably beautiful area with a blissful tranquillity. Today, the village's proximity to dramatic landscapes has given rise to a thriving economy based on sightseeing, lake cruises, water sports, mountaineering, horse-riding and the consumption of locally-brewed real ale! The Old Man of Coniston provides a stunning backdrop, rising dramatically behind the houses when seen from the village centre. As well as being an excellent centre for climbers and walkers, with the picturesque Tarn Hows nearby, Coniston’s fascinating industrial history attracts visitors to the Coppermines Valley and the Tilberthwaite slate quarries.

Set sail on Coniston Water with Coniston Launch or the elegant steam yacht Gondola. Memories of Donald Campbell and his water speed record in Bluebird K7 are never far away, notably amongst the magnificent local history collections at the Ruskin Museum. Be sure to visit Brantwood, the beautiful home of John Ruskin for the last 30 years of his life on the eastern shore of the lake.

Coniston... Did you know?

Rich seams of copper were first discovered in the 16th century and by the mid-19th century, the Coniston coppermines were the most productive in Europe, with most of the copper taken to line the hulls of wooden sailing vessels.

In medieval times, Monk Coniston was a sheep grange belonging to Furness Abbey, providing fleeces for woollen cloths.

The local beauty spot Tarn Hows was created as a designed landscape in the late 19th century. It was bought by Beatrix Potter in the 1930s and is now owned by the National Trust.

Remains of agricultural settlements from the Bronze Age have been found near the shores of Coniston Water. The Romans mined copper from the fells above the lake, and a potash kiln and two iron bloomeries show that industrial activity continued in medieval times. In the 13th and 14th centuries, Coniston Water was an important source of fish for the monks of Furness Abbey who owned the lake and much of the surrounding land. Copper mining continued in the area until the 19th century.

Until the copper mines, dating from Jacobean times, were revitalised about 1859, Coniston was a scattered rural community. It was mainly settled around Coniston Hall, a 16th Century farmhouse with a display of mighty chimneys, built by the Fleming family, and now owned by the National Trust (though not open to the public).

The lake was formerly known as “Thurston Water”, a name derived from the Old Norse personal name ‘Thursteinn’ and Old English ‘waeter’. This name was used as an alternative to Coniston Water until the late 18th century.

The Victorian artist and philosopher John Ruskin owned Brantwood House on the eastern shore of the lake, and lived in it from 1872 until his death in 1900. When he died, he was buried in St Andrew’s graveyard, and his grave was marked with a large carved cross made from green slate from the local quarry at Tilberthwaite. It was designed by W.G. Collingwood his friend and secretary, who was an expert on Anglo-Saxon crosses, with symbols depicting important aspects of Ruskin’s work and life.

37 A year later W.G. Collingwood worked to set up an exhibition, now called the Ruskin Museum at the back of the Coniston Mechanics Institute, as a place to preserve any Ruskin mementos that could be found.

Arthur Ransome set his children’s novel Swallows and Amazons and the sequels Swallowdale, Winter Holiday, Pigeon Post and The Picts and the Martyrs around a fictional lake derived from a combination of Coniston Water and Windermere. The fictional lake resembles Windermere, but the surrounding hills and fells resemble those of Coniston Water. Some of Coniston Water’s islands and other local landmarks can be identified in the novels. In particular the books’ Wild Cat Island with its secret harbour is based on Peel Island.

Boating The lake is ideal for kayaking and canoeing and there are a number of good sites for launching and recovery.

The steam yacht Gondola tours the lake in the summer months, along with two smaller motorised launches. Boats can be hired from the lakeside near the steam yacht, with various sizes of boat for hire, from small canoes and kayaks to large personal craft. Along with Ullswater and Derwentwater, Coniston Water has a mandatory waterspeed limit of 10 mph, this is suspended temporarily for boats attempting new world waterspeed records during Records Week; usually the first week in November.

38 The prettiest village set in the magnificent vale of Esthwaite, in the heart of the English Lake District, Hawkshead is a truly historic and wonderfully picturesque village characterised by its cluster of whitewashed houses with floral highlights, archways and alleyways, courtyards and squares. A prosperous mediaeval wool town, its rich history includes important connections with the poet William Wordsworth and children’s story author Beatrix Potter.

Hawkshead has flourished since its beginnings as a medieval market town. Today, with its car-free village centre, it’s the perfect place for the visitor to experience the ‘real’ Lake District. The cobbled streets, squares and courtyards and the beautiful whitewashed cottages, topped with local Lakeland slate, give this little place a magical feel. An enchanting place to stop off for a relaxing lunch, or indeed to spend a few days soaking up its ambience whilst exploring the many nearby places of interest The village is steeped in history and heritage, from the ruins of Hawkshead Hall (built by medieval monks) and the 15th-century St Michael’s parish church and court house, to later buildings such as the grammar school (1855) which the poet William Wordsworth attended.

There is also a Beatrix Potter gallery. Hawkshead is only 3.2 km from Hill Top at Near Sawrey where the author wrote many of her books.

41 Ulverston was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Ulvrestun, deriving from an Old Norse family name Úlfarr meaning ‘wolf warrior’ and tun meaning ‘farm’ or ‘homestead’. This gives rise to the presence of a wolf on the town’s coat of arms. Other variations of the name recorded throughout history include Oluestonam (1127), and Uluereston (1189). Much of Cumbria, being in the hands of the Scots at the time, is not mentioned in the Doomsday Book. At that time Ulverston was in the county of Lancashire, only becoming part of Cumbria as late as 1974.

On 11th September,1280, the town was granted a Market Charter by King Edward I during his visit to Carlisle.

This gave authority for a market to be held in Ulverston every Thursday with an annual fair each September. This important event in Ulverston’s history is still celebrated every year during September’s Charter Festival.

The granting of a Market Charter was of great significance to the town and Ulverston enjoyed significant growth in its economy and status. As with much of this area, the town was a popular target for raids by the rampaging Scots under Robert the Bruce, but despite being burned down twice during the early 14th century, Ulverston continued to prosper.

Today Ulverston remains a bustling market town serving the Peninsula and providing employment through the many industries based here. The Market Place is still the centre of life in the town and modern Ulverston retains its old-world appearance with many colourful houses and quaint cobbled streets leading from the square. Alongside the weekly Thursday and Saturday markets you’ll find unique shops and cafes, cosy country pubs, farmers’

markets and food fairs. Ulverston also hosts a wide range of events and festivals and is pleased to welcome visitors from all over the world.

This unusual bond between history and modernity is also apparent in the oldest building in the town. The busy Parish Church of St Mary, which dates back from 1111, still shows traces of the early Norman church.

Famous Sons of Ulverston As well as Sir John Barrow and George Fox, there are other famous former residents of Ulverston. Lord Norman Birkett was a British judge during the Nuremberg Trials after World War II. Prestigious Victoria Crosses were awarded to Private Harry Christian (World War I), Frank Jefferson (World War II) and Basil Weston (World War II), all former residents of Ulverston. The town’s most famous son Stan Laurel who, in partnership with Oliver Hardy, became one of the most famous comedy duos in the 20th century. A bronze life-size statue of Laurel and Hardy and a museum dedicated to Laurel and Hardy can be found in the town.

Arthur StanleyJefferson was born in his grandparents’ house on 16 June 1890 at 3 Argyle Street, Ulverston, Cumbria.

He had two brothers and a sister. Laurel first appeared with his future partner, Oliver Hardy, in The Lucky Dog (1921), which was filmed in 1919, but not released until 1921. He visited Ulverston in 1947 when he appeared on the Coronation Hall Balcony with Oliver Hardy. He died in America on 23 February 1965, aged 74.

43 There’s always things to do in in Ulverston, the festival town of South Lakeland, whether it’s Flag Fortnight, the Lantern Procession or the Dickensian Festival. An outdoor market is held every Thursday and Saturday, when the town crier is in town.

Special events combine with independent shops, cosy pubs, traditional markets and cultural hotspots. Add in the colourfully rendered houses, cobbled streets and inviting side alleys and you’ll find enough in Ulverston to keep you enthralled for days. It also has its own leisure centre where you can enjoy a whole range of sports and activities!

Ulverston is the birthplace of Stan Laurel and to celebrate this, the town houses the world’s only Laurel and Hardy Museum. There’s also a Laurel and Hardy statue in County Square, outside the Coronation Hall, a fine theatre which presents a variety of plays, concerts and events. You’ll also find a cinema in Ulverston town centre, The Roxy Cinema is a traditional family cinema with over 300 seats in an Art Deco auditorium. It has one of the largest CinemaScope screens in Cumbria.

The Sir John Barrow Monument stands on Hoad Hill overlooking Ulverston and Morecambe Bay. It was erected in 1850 as a tribute to Sir John Barrow, a naval administrator and traveller born in Ulverston. This distinctive landmark, modelled on an earlier version of the Eddystone Lighthouse, is now open to the public whenever the flag is flying on top of the Hill. Climb up and enjoy the view.

Conishead Priory, just outside Ulverston, is home to one of the largest Buddhist Communities in Europe.

The Buddhist Temple and historic mansion are set in 70 acres of woodlands and gardens on the shores of Morecambe Bay. Another nearby attraction is Gleaston Water Mill, an 18th Century water corn mill with original wooden gearing and milling artefacts.

Ford Park is a perfect place for families, with a playground, restored Victorian kitchen garden, cafe and bistro to enjoy. The Park is a nine-acre green space with open fields, woodland and mature gardens surrounding the Grade II listed buildings. There is a state-of-the-art Natural Playground, Nature Trail with Butterfly Mound and Woodland Walkway and an entry level Orienteering Course. The mature gardens, orchard and Kitchen Garden have been tended by volunteers over the years to bring them back to somewhere near their former glory. This has been a labour of love which continues to this day.

Gleaston Water Mill The Mill and adjacent buildings have been restored by the owners, Mike and Vicky Brereton, to provide public access to a working water corn mill, Dusty Miller’s tea shop, Pig’s Whisper Country Store, and a converted pig sty – now a holiday cottage.

South Lakes Safari Zoo is a 51-acre zoo established in 1994 by David Gill, and located in Cumbria, England.

Named as such after its proximity to the Lake District it lies entirely within the Borough of Barrow-inFurness on the outskirts of Dalton.

Grange-Over-Sands

45 The town of Grange-Over-Sands developed in the Victorian era from a small fishing village, and the arrival of the railway made it a popular seaside resort on the north side of Morecambe Bay, across the sands from Morecambe. The ‘over-Sands’ suffix was added in the late 19th or early 20th century by the local vicar, who was fed up with his post going to Grange in Borrowdale near Keswick.

The clean, sea air was believed to be of benefit to tuberculosis sufferers, and in 1891 one of the first sanatoriums in the country was established at Meathop. Not only was the air believed to have a therapeutic effect but also the local spring water.

Above the town is Hampsfield Fell (generally abbreviated to Hampsfell), crowned by ‘Hampsfell Hospice’, a sturdy limestone tower monument offering shelter to the rain-drenched walker, as well as the finest viewpoint of all the foothills of the outlying southern Lakeland fells. On the roof, a large compass pointer and list of peaks identify the greater and lesser landmarks in the magnificent panorama. On a clear day, you can see for miles across Morecambe Bay, Lancaster and Heysham.

The town features a traffic-free promenade, ornamental gardens, a duck pond, golf courses, brass band concerts and vantage points for bird watching are just some of the many attractions on offer. The shop fronts still retain their Edwardian appearance with many shops selling local produce.

The estuary and the countryside around Grange are fascinating places for nature enthusiasts. A tremendous range of birds can be seen, and there are several nature reserves and sites of special scientific interest. Grange has some of the finest parks and gardens on the Cumbrian coast, the ornamental gardens has a lake with many water birds.

Grange-over-Sands has a railway station on the Furness line designed, along with many others on the line, by the Lancaster architects firm of Sharpe, Paley and Austin.

According to Nikolaus Pevsner, the clock tower is the best building in Grange-over-Sands. It was put up in 1912, in the style of Manchester architect Edgar Wood, with diagonal buttresses, a small band of bell openings, and a short octagonal spire.

My First Fell - Bowness Family walk This is a delightful walk, suitable for families from the busy hub of Bowness-on-Windermere to the summit of Brantfell. It’s a steep (in places) two and a half hours walk but the views are outstanding from the top. The pace is slow and steady to accommodate little legs.

There are 3 miles of traffic free cycle paths and a further couple of miles of very quiet roads south of Wray Castle on the western side of Windermere.

The best thing about this route however, is that you can turn it into a real mini-adventure by catching the Windermere Bike Boat from the eastern shore of the lake. As the name cunningly suggests, this is a boat that only carries cyclists and their bikes. It runs from May half term to the end of the summer holidays (daily during holidays and weekends in term time).

Grasmere, Rydal and Ambleside This glacial u-shaped valley lies at the very heart of the Lake District. Both Grasmere and Ambleside attract the crowds but you don’t have to walk far to experience peace and quiet on the slopes of the surrounding fells. The area is associated with Wordsworth and visitors from around the world flock to his former homes at Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount. The 16th century Rydal Hall features The Grot, a tiny summerhouse framing a view of a tumbling waterfall.

Low Furness Ride Starting in Ulverston this ride is just over 12 miles ride and a great way to discover the beauty of Cumbria’s landscape, taking you through the rich pastureland of Low Furness. The route also passes the remains of 12th century Furness Abbey before entering the maritime town of Barrow-in-Furness.

The legacy of mining and quarrying on the fellsides, pastoral farming on lower ground, woodland industries, and the busy village of Coniston, all come together in this striking and characterful working landscape. William Wordsworth, England’s famous poet, went to Grammar School in the lovely village of Hawkshead. There’s much to learn about the rich industrial heritage of the area. We’re developing new walks to bring this fascinating past to life through our walk leaders.

Taking you from Kendal, the ‘Gateway to the Lake District’, this 15 mile route travels to the Edwardian seaside resort of Grange-over-Sands, with views across to the Arndale and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Workington to Cockermouth This 12 mile ride includes lovely views of the River Derwent and a lovely off road stretch towards the end of the route that begins at pretty Camerton.

You finish at Workington Harbour. The route also takes you past Wordsworth House and Garden, the birthplace of romantic poet William and his sister Dorothy.

47 Take time to visit this medieval village, which has won numerous Cumbria in Bloom and Britain In Bloom awards. It’s also fascinating to explore the limestone pavements and surrounding landscape that reaches out to meet the sands of Morecambe Bay on the edge of the Furness Peninsula.

Offering stunning views of the South Lakeland District fells and countryside, Cartmel has grown up around its famous 12th Century medieval Priory Church. It is a special place where ancient history and tradition mingle effortlessly with the present day. Although steeped in history, Cartmel is not trapped in time and the village offers today’s visitors many modern surprises in the form of fine quality attractions, shops, eateries and places to stay.

Around the village square you will discover a delightful assortment of genuine 16th - 18th century buildings providing, as they have for centuries, friendly inns, well stocked shops and private dwellings. Described recently by Chris Evans as a ‘Thimble full of diamonds’, Cartmel has just been awarded numerous prizes at Cumbria in Bloom 2014.

The village has more recently become known as the “home of sticky toffee pudding”. This can be purchased in various sizes from the Cartmel Village Shop. Its racecourse hosts popular meetings two or three times a year, traditionally in Whit Week.

Against the backdrop of the beautiful English Lake District, Cartmel Races rekindles the spirit of the original steeplechases. The three-day May racemeeting actually takes place over five days – allowing a day off for racegoers to enjoy the Lake District countryside in between each day at the races. The racegoers arrive so early in the day and leave so late that, unlike most racecourses, there isn’t time to clear up and turn the racecourse around for consecutive days racing.

The 2018 fixture list has been published and the new season commences with an additional day on Saturday, when Simply Red will be playing after the final race.

49 The village and area has much to offer visitors, in wildlife, walking and history. The Arnside area is a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. It has sites of scientific interest because of the rare butterflies and alpine plants that may be found around the limestone pavements.

There are many lovely wooded walks around Arnside Knott, up to the “Pepper-Pot” at Silverdale or around the coast with its cliff top walks and sea views.

Pretty shops line Arnside promenade and after a walk, a drink sat outside looking across the estuary towards Grange and the Lakes peaks on a summer night is ample reward. You can try to spot the salmon leaping. Watch for the tidal bore at Arnside as the tide comes in.

Arnside has excellent communication links. The motorway junctions M6 J35 and M6 J36 are less than ten miles away, meaning easy access to the Lakes, Windermere (20 miles), Lancaster (17 miles), or North Yorkshire (20 miles). Arnside railway station allows easy access to Carnforth (of “Brief Encounter” fame), Grange, Ulverston and Barrow. Situated about a mile and a half outside of Arnside, and to the South East of Arnside Knott, Arnside tower is a spectacular and almost unique example of a Cumbrian pele tower.

The oldest building in the parish, the tower was built in the late 14 or early 15th century, and was a free standing tower (most pele towers had outbuildings or were attached to a house or hall of some sort) The tower would originally have been four and five storeys tall, however due to systematic dismantling and weathering and age, it is now both roofless and floorless. The tower was severely burned in 1602, probably through a domestic fire rather than as the result of an attack, but was repaired and then occupied. Between 1684 and 1690, the dismantling occurred, with building materials being removed to Beetham and Knowsley.

In 1884, the now already ruinous tower was subjected to a particularly severe storm, which resulted in the destruction of most of the south west angle of the cross wall, with the South wall also being damaged.

The tower is now virtually split in two, with one portion containing the four storeys with domestic rooms, and the other portion containing the five storeys with the garde-robe and the taller part of the tower. Most of the windows have had the decorative surrounds removed over the years, and are now no more than gaps in the masonry.

The same can be said of all the doorways. Some of the parapet still remains on the north west wall and on the summit of the tallest part of the tower.

The turret staircase is still largely intact, although the interior of the tower is in such a state that it’s not recommended that the ruins be entered.

The Arnside & Silverdale AONB is a lovely area to walk in and has one of the best stretches of coastline from the Borders with Scotland to the Borders with Wales. It is possible to walk along the sand or take the low path which winds its way a few metres above the high tide mark on the cliff side. I enjoyed the views over Morcambe Bay, which are extensive but it is the rocky shoreline and pristine (if a little muddy) sands which impressed me and retained an interest until the path entered the caravan park. Although the beach walking is the highlight of the walk the return to Arnside from the pretty village of Silverdale is thoroughly enjoyable with the ruins of Arnside Tower particularly worth an explore.

If you have the energy, try for the summit of Arnside Knott, the views will be reward enough.

Milnthorpe

Milnthorpe is a small market town on the southern border of Cumbria, 7 miles south of Kendal, once part of the township of Heversham-with-Milnthorpe.

Now spared of heavy traffic, it is an ancient village of limestone buildings, arranged in nooks and crannies along narrow lanes.

Visitors passing through on the A6 heading towards Kendal in the north or Lancaster in the south might overlook this gem, whose narrow lanes and historic, beautiful buildings recall a time when a coach and four was more common than a four-wheel drive.

Milnthorpe was a medieval market town and, apart from Kendal, was the most important community in the area.

The Market Square is bordered on three sides by pretty cottages and inviting shops. The fourth side opens out on to green lawns and trees leading up to an imposing and very attractive 19th century church of St Thomas.

In 1334 King Edward III granted a Charter to Alexander de Wyndesore permitting a weekly market on Wednesdays and a fair on St Peter’s Day 29th June.

In 1931 the Dallam Tower and Levens Hall estates as joint Lords of the Manor granted ‘controlling the conduct of the Square’ to the Parish Council.”

Local industry includes a 300-year old comb making business, farming, and tourism, being a convenient

stop off point for coaches en-route to the Lake District. Just to the north is Levens Hall, famed for its fantastic garden topiary.

St Thomas’ church was built in 1837 as a Chapel of Ease to St Peter’s Heversham to which Church Street leads. It was designed by George Webster to hold ‘600 hearers’ and named as a tribute to Mrs Thomasin. The chancel and north porch were added in 1883 and the Church Centre, with an upper hall, replaced the gallery area in 1982.

The Heron Theatre is a listed building which was formerly the local 18th century two-room Grammar School in Beetham. Located just off the A6, between Carnforth and Milnthorpe, on the southern fringes of the Lake District, the theatre has comfortable raked seating for 80, with the Box Office and Bar located in the pleasant foyer and exhibition area Tracing origins to 1948, when a local headmaster formed an ambitious amateur drama group in South Westmorland. This flourished through the years, mainly through the performance of plays, together with film shows and literary events. From 1966 the Society developed its former rehearsal and storage space at the old school and in 1985 was able to purchase the freehold. With the help of a substantial grant from the Lottery, the facilities were improved and the building developed to provide today’s compact and attractive theatre.

Things To Do Heron Corn Mill Heron Corn Mill is a Living Heritage site with a Grade II* listed working watermill, dating 1740, producing fine flours for sale. There has been a mill on this site prior to 1096. These days the site is also a hydropower demonstrator model with a Kaplan-type turbine installed. The barn runs a year-round programme of events and activities for visitors and the local community.

The single rail track circumnavigates the carpark and picnic area, whilst prospective customers queue up on the miniature platform adjacent to the micro signal box.. Super entertainment for kids of all ages.

Fairy Steps From Beetham village a path climbs and leads to the Fairy Steps, the natural limestone staircase on Beetham fell.

Supposedly, if you climb the Fairy Steps without touching the limestone sides of the narrow gully, the fairies will grant your wish. Those with second sight are believed to be able to witness the fairy folk skipping up the steps.

Sizergh has been home to the Strickland family for over 760 years, and for many of those years the family played a major role in national events. For example, a Strickland carried the English banner at Agincourt.

But a gradual decline in family fortunes during the 17th century - in part through support for the Jacobite cause - left the Strickland’s short of the money needed to renovate Sizergh in tune with prevailing fashions.

And for that we should be grateful, for since the family lacked the wealth to follow fashion, Sizergh has remained an almost unaltered example of an Elizabethan manor, like its near neighbour Levens Hall.

The core of the castle is a 14th century pele tower and hall, but a superb Tudor house was built around the tower, with wings flanking a central courtyard. In the Elizabethan period the house gained wonderful carved interiors of oak, including the finest over mantles in England. Around 1770 the great hall range was expanded and given a Georgian facelift and the Victorian owners extended the porch to allow carriages to drive under it. Thus, passengers could alight in comfort, protected from the elements.

The second-floor tower room is illuminated by 15th century trefoil windows, and you can still see the adze marks on the roof-hewn floor boards. The finest room on view is the Inlaid Chamber, which boasts excellent period furniture and exquisite Elizabethan panelling inlaid with poplar and bog oak. The panels depict Italian Renaissance themes and seem to glitter and shine with inlay.

At a low ebb in the family fortune during the 19th century the entire room was sold by the Strickland’s to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London for £1000.

The V&A has loaned the panelling back to the family so that it can be displayed in its original setting. The ceiling is a symphony of drooping plaster pendants, and there are panels of medieval glass in the windows.

The Dining Room (the original medieval Great Chamber) has mementoes from the Strickland exile in Paris during the Jacobite period, when Lady Strickland acted as governess to James Stuart, ‘The Old Pretender’. There is a portrait of the young James, and a bust of his son, Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Sizergh Castle is surrounded by beautiful gardens, featuring a limestone rock garden, pasture land, and woodlands which support a large butterfly population.

55 The attractive market town of Sedbergh is set in the magnificent western dales of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, close to the rugged eastern fells of the Lake District. Here, visitors can unearth fascinating history, explore the amazing Howgills - some of Alfred Wainwright’s favourite fells - on foot or bike, enjoy some of the best night skies in the entire country, feast on locally sourced foods, browse the independent shops, indulge in books galore, and take home some beautifully made crafts.

Sedbergh developed at the confluence of four rivers where ancient trade routes merged. The town is listed in the Doomsday book and shows evidence of Viking, Saxon and Norman influences. The remains of a motte and bailey castle sit above the town at Castlehaw. The parish church of St. Andrews is a Norman church built in the late 12th century.

The town was granted a market charter in the 13th century and Sedbergh School, set in magnificent parkland open to the public, was established in 1525.

George Fox, founder of the Quaker movement, preached in this area, at nearby Firbank Fell and at Brigflatts Meeting House which was built in 1675 and continues to operate as a place for quiet contemplation to the present day. The poet Basil Bunting is buried in the Quaker Burial Ground at Brigflatts.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Sedbergh played a part in the thriving woollen industry of the region.

Evidence of weavers cottages can still be found in the town and at several nearby mills.

As times have changed so has Sedbergh. Some traditions have continued to the present day while others have been adapted for modern tastes.

On Wednesdays, year round, you will still find a weekly food market, drawing people down the surrounding dales for their weekly shop and a natter.

From April to September there is also a monthly Artisan Market specialising in locally made crafts and regional foods.

Within this busy little town you will find an eclectic mix of independent shops offering everything from fine porcelain to walking boots, fleece jackets to flowers. There is a host of cafés & pubs where you can enjoy a hearty breakfast, lunch or dinner, before, during or after your exploration of the surrounding fells and dales.

Since 2003 Sedbergh has officially been England’s Book Town. From Westwood Books at one end of the town, rated one of the top ten second hand book shops in the country, to the Lakes and Dales Book Centre housed in the Tourist Information Centre at the heart of the town, you will find all the books you could wish for. At the volunteer-run TIC you will also find a vast array of information about local walks, events, and attractions, along with maps and Dalesthemed gifts.

Exploring a little further afield you will find a number of venues big enough to wile away an entire day. If it’s raining and you would rather be inside head to Farfield Mill along the Garsdale road. This Victorianera woollen mill was rescued from dereliction by local townsfolk and re-opened in 2001 as an Arts and Heritage Centre. With its four floors of history and craft plus a café and yet more books, you can spend the whole day here learning about the story of wool, watching weavers operate heritage looms, and talking with more than a dozen artists and craftspeople in their studios. Farfield also hosts a rolling programme of workshops and exhibitions throughout the year.

Kirkby Lonsdale Kirkby Lonsdale is a historic market town just inside the south-east boundary of Cumbria, on the River Lune.

This market town has some lovely riverside and country walks and is set in the lush Lune Valley between the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District National Parks. The view of the river from St. Mary’s churchyard prompted Victorian artist and critic John Ruskin to describe the landscape as some of the loveliest in the country. It became known as Ruskin’s View and inspired a famous painting by Turner.

It is also the famed location of the Devil’s Bridge - a beautiful three-arched 14th Century bridge that spans the River Lune near Kirkby Lonsdale, and is one of the most photographed bridges in the North of England.

During the first weekend in September, the town hosts its Victorian Fair, now a major event in the North of England. A lively Victorian street atmosphere is achieved with entertainment, demonstrations and street vendors.

Kirkby Lonsdale bustles with activity, with a weekly market, many local events and traditional shops. The centre is a mix of elegant 18th-century buildings and stone cottages huddled around cobbled courtyards and narrow alleyways with names such as Salt Pie Lane and Jingling Lane.

Salt Pie Lane – formerly known as ‘Cattle Market Yard’. Cattle used to be sold in the adjoining Horse Market, and an enterprising lady living in the yard made hot salted mutton pies for sale to the traders. After consumption of the pies it was necessary to adjourn to the nearby ‘Green Dragon’ to slake their thirst – the landlord of which just happened to be a relation!

Visitors to Kirkby Lonsdale can enjoy the beautiful countryside and its spectacular views or spend time wandering the vast array of shops of in the town. In the 13th Century Kirkby Lonsdale was granted a charter to hold fairs and Thursday is market day, it attracts visitors and locals alike with a good range of stalls offering everything from local produce, to souvenirs, plants and bespoke jewellery. There is so much to see and do in Kirkby Lonsdale that as Ruskin once wrote “I do not know in all my own country, still less in France or Italy, a place more naturally divine.”

Spanning the River Lune to the south and east of Kirkby Lonsdale is Devil’s Bridge. This magnificent threearched bridge, probably dates from the 12th or 13th century, and is now a scheduled ancient monument.

A popular haunt for motorcycle enthusiasts who congregate at weekends in the adjoining parking area to discuss all things mechanical over a mug of hot tea and a bacon butty, Devil’s Bridge was once the only bridge over the Lune for miles and formed part of the busy west-bound route into the town. The town is noted for the Devil’s Bridge which at one time carried the Skipton to Kendal road over the River Lune. It dates from around 1370 and is constructed of fine gritstone ashlar.

The section of river underneath the bridge is popular with scuba divers because of the easy access and egress, deep rock pools of about 16ft during a low swell and good visibility. It is also popular with tourists and locals for picnicking, paddling or swimming in the summer. Devil’s Bridge is a name given to many bridges, mainly stone or masonry arch bridges, and represent a significant technological achievement. Each of the Devil’s Bridges has a corresponding Devil related myth or folktale and the legends about them form a special category in the Aarne-Thompson classification system for folktales.

Now closed to traffic it is a popular resting place, perfect for picnics and also start or end point for a delightful riverside walk to the north of Kirkby Lonsdale.

One of Kirkby Lonsdale’s assets is a medieval bridge known as the Devil’s Bridge. It gets it’s name because of an old legend which tells us that it was built by none other than His Satanic Majesty. The tale goes that a cow, which belonged to a poor woman, strayed across the river. The old woman went to look for it but unfortunately the river had risen and she could not reach the cow, which was on the opposite bank.

At that moment the Devil appeared and shouted across the river that he would build a bridge on condition that the first living thing to cross it should become his lawful prize. This, the woman agreed to. The Devil knew that the woman’s husband was on his way home and hoped to gain some good booty. The old woman was just as cunning and, seeing her husband approaching, she called her dog and threw a stone across the river for it to fetch. The dog, being the first living thing to cross the bridge, cheated the Devil of his prize.

Below the bridge can be seen the ‘Devil’s Neck Collar’ a rock with a large perforation, which is said to have been lost from his neck in his plunge for the bridge when his scheme had been thwarted.

Carnforth has a long association with the railways dating back to 1846, when the first station opened. The town further expanded when it formed the junction of three railway lines. Later, Carnforth was also linked to the coalfields of Durham by the South Durham and Lancashire Railway. Its importance as a railway centre continued through into the 20th Century. Now more famous as a railway town Carnforth Station was the location for the filming of the well-known film Brief Encounter starring Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson.

This film has been regarded as one of the best ever to come out of the British film industry.
